Basically, don’t stand in the red circles. You’re not supposed to be able to just stand there and survive in them.
If you’re melee and tanky, dodge through them/kite round them/leap over them/wait them out/whatever the rest of your melee do. If you’re backline and glassy, stand outside the red circles and cast your own AoEs. If you’re glassy and don’t have AoEs, your build probably isn’t ideal for the situation, but you could just do your own thing and try and focus unsuspecting backliners.
As you become more experienced, you’ll be able to read the fight and guess where the enemy might bomb, so you’re less likely to get caught. If you do get caught, kitten happens, dust yourself off and run back.
No. The Mystic Forge is useful in WvW for crafting superior siege.
6) The point of WvW is, basically, just for fun. The rewards for winning a matchup are pretty negligible, although the rewards for participating are good now. People play it because they enjoy fighting other players in big or small fights, enjoy the strategy of attacking and defending structures, and competing with enemy players in that way, or even simply because of the sense of community, which since the onset of megaservers in PvE, only really exists in WvW.
All the servers are ranked from 1-27 (or 1-24 if you’re in NA)** but the only real purpose of the rankings are to try and make the matchups as even as possible. There’s no prize for being the number 1 server.
There are such things as WvW tournaments, typically lasting a few weeks, where winning is more richly rewarded, but there hasn’t been one of those for well over a year, and isn’t likely to be one soon.
**Although there are 24 NA servers and 27 EU servers, ArenaNet have introduced a system of “linking” servers together, so in some cases it’s 2 servers per side in a matchup, to try and make matches more populated.
7) My heart says Wales (I’m English, but England will be knocked out in the quarter finals so there’s no point hoping). My head says Germany.
Hammer Guardians have a 5 second blast finisher so they’ll still be the main providers of stability.
A nice happy thread
@erKo: We do have quite a few Swedish players, but I don’t believe FRI are active anymore, certainly not in WvW.
I’ve just experienced this issue. It’s the last event I need for the achievement.
Nope, ascended weapons and armors only.
You can’t buy crafted Marauder stats on TP, they are account bound items. Berserker’s can be easily obtained from stat-selectable exotics, like Bladed armors from VB, or buying karma armor from Orr.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats
As always, keep in mind Karma armour cannot be salvaged, so any runes you put on the armour are irretrievable.
It’s hard to answer outright whether AG is good, the question is whether AG is good for you. All servers are active in WvW to some degree, but some have lower populations and therefore more of a focus on smaller-scale fighting and roaming, whereas higher populated servers are dominated more by zergs and blobs which can often be 50-60 people strong, though of course there are roamers on those servers as well. Different players prefer different things, so the best suggestion is to try WvW on AG and see if the activity level and community is right for you. If it seems too quiet for your liking, look to transfer to a more populated (ie, higher rank) server.
Also, ask in mapchat in a WvW map if there’s a community WvW guild to join, or a community forum you can sign up to, so you can get more involved in the community and get a better feel for the place.
Proofs of Heroics only drop from the rank-up chests, not Transcendent Chests, and they still do since the patch.
However, Transcendent Chests have changed, in that instead of a 20 minute XP boost, they now give Potions of WvW Reward, a la the PvP daily reward chests.
Does your guild have any Objective Auras unlocked? If not, and people are complaining about you claiming, that could be why.
@Aeolus: The runes cost 150 lumps of Aurilium (the Auric Basin currency) + 2g each, so a full set is 900 lumps and 12g. They plan to make the HoT stuff purchaseable from the notary vendor with the next update though, and they probably won’t nerf them too hard, if at all, because of the amount of people they would kitten off after they spent ages farming PvE.
@OP: I’ve seen people command effectively on engi, but that’s always in small scale. The reason 99.9% of zergs are led by Guardians is it’s the best class to lead on, by far, and rolling a Guardian to command on is the best solution to the problem you’re having. It’s not just that it’s the best class to play, but you’ll be more effective at commanding your melee, 90% of which will be Guardians, because you’ll know which skills are off cooldown and when.
Can’t seem to find one. Am I not looking hard enough or did he not get offered enough of a pay rise to move to a cold climate?

Guys, I can’t confirm the date… I don’t think. But yes, soon™.
So yes. Today.
To quote the great philosopher C. R. Jepsen: I really really really really really really like you.
1) Warrior had gone out of fashion with the onset of pirate shipping (that is, groups favouring ranged nuke only rather than engaging in melee combat, brought on by Anet’s nerfing of stability last year). Stability has been improved so warriors may become more popular again. For large group play a good way to go is hammer-greatsword Berserker. I’m on my phone so can’t link a build, but start off tanky and work in more offensive gear as you grow more accustomed to staying alive. For utilities, run Endure Pain as a panic button, and something to provide stability, such as Dolyak Signet or Balanced Stance. For your third, perhaps Outrage for the low cooldown stunbreak. It’s down to preference really, so have a play about. Also, run Battle Standard. That one skill can turn a wipe into a win.
2) Perhaps soldiers with berserker weapons and trinkets to start off with. For runes, Durability is ideal, for the boon duration it offers, but that takes a lot of PvE farming as well as requiring HoT. Other good options could be Strength or Hoelbrak. Depends on budget.
3) Warrior is always desired for the Battle Standard, but the most useful classes are Altruistic Healing Guardian/Dragonhunter, which are the core of the melee train, and Wells Necro and Staff Elementalist, both of which are the main sources of ranged damage, with the elementalist also needed for healing. You should be able to find builds for these on Metabattle (I’d link some myself, but phone). Revenant is also pretty useful, the Glint legend gives out boons like candy, and the Jalis elite is a 50% damage reduction for your party. Google or someone else could probably help more on build or gear for Rev though.
4) I don’t know of any guides but I’m sure they exist. Failing that, ask around on your server, some have WvW community guilds that can help people, or see if your server has a forum and you might find guides on there.
EDIT: Join your server’s TeamSpeak. Don’t need to talk, just listen, and it helps both you and your commander.
Most importantly, have fun
(edited by Joshhh.2076)
Your setup sounds good. A good starting point for guardian builds is usually 20k health, 3k+ armour, 30% crit chance, though obviously you can tailor that how you prefer.
To answer your questions:
A. No. The first rule of frontline guardian is to stay alive. Take as much toughness and vitality as you need to stay alive, then work from there. Certainly if you command, you’ll often be the first person into the enemy bomb, and some people enjoy sniping commanders too.
B. Not really, though any crit chance you can fit in is never lost. Once you feel comfortable staying alive you can spec a bit more offensively if you like.
Did Anet reduce WXP gain or is it just me?
Also, inb4 they introduce a guild tactic that can display the lord’s health bar. Yay, goldsinks.
@FogLeg think he means in the “Defend…” UI.
But yes, the lord health bar was removed. Now you get one bar, which empties as a circle is capped.
Why? Because Anet.
Another option is to visit Obsidian Sanctum. People often use the arena in there for duelling.
Playing in the borderlands for 15 minutes won’t kill you.
I assumed they’d removed them. The extreme drop nerf is standard Anet procedure I suppose. Since HoT hit I’ve had more precursors drop in WvW than Siege Commander’s Spoons.
These statements about it being their “top priority” and “big updates” are just empty words designed to keep you around long enough to maybe buy some gems before finally giving up.
Fact is, they don’t give a kitten about WvW. You can either accept it and make the best of what’s left before that’s also gone, or go elsewhere and hopefully feel valued as a customer.
What’s wrong with seeing some random roamer and wanting to fight them fairly? You don’t want to know their name, be their friend, linger and speak to them, you just want to see if you’re more skilled than that guy and be on your way.
Knowingly (key word) interrupting a duel doesn’t prove anything, it doesn’t make you better, or cooler, and it doesn’t really help your server. It’s lame to do so, and justifications like red = dead etc. don’t make it any less lame.
That being said, regarding the OP, outright flaming in any situation is uncalled for, and achieves nothing. The people watching could simply have said it was a duel, even after the 2 guys got stomped. If it happens again then they have a right to be grieved.
p2w
Message Body length must at least be 15.
It is sad, that it takes one week to fix the bug with the proof of heroic vendor that didn’t hurt anyone, but those rly harmfull bugs don’t get a fix for weeks or even months.
“If we change this thing that’s making WvW more accessible, people might play our new PvE more!”*
“If we don’t change this thing that’s breaking WvW beyond belief, people might play our new PvE more.”*
- Not actual quotes.
Free character slot for Christmas? G’wahn Anet, you know you wanna….
I personally disagree. It’s unfair to punish players for something that’s beyond their control, and it doesn’t necessarily punish karma-trainers. If server X go to server Y’s borderland and they both have blobs, server Z will probably have the outnumbered buff and servers X and Y would therefore be punished.
Also, whatever you think of the place, it’s unfair to the players on the outnumbering side(s) in EotM, because they can’t really change maps.
Maybe they will bring back the middle lake and Quaggans… I can just imagine what kind of weird events they plan with Quaggans.
Capture all 5 ruins and a cannon fires quaggans at the gates.
This is the forum thread equivalent of the old woman in Titanic telling her story.
He’s talking about the minute of free play thrown in at the end of every round of bell choir, not f2p accounts.
Also, I agree with the OP.
Anet are training the mobs to do WvW for when all the players are gone.
I don’t mind a jumping puzzle. I don’t mind a hard jumping puzzle. I do mind a hard jumping puzzle that kills you for daring to take a second to position yourself for a jump, and having to do it three times.
Personally, I’m hoping Alpine comes out with home spawn moved to the orb area so we can fight in the city. That’s all that map needed imo.
Would you keep the crafting stations in the city though?
Do we have confirmation yet whether the drop rate is better than for Black Lion keys?
So if someone tags a gate of a keep and contests a waypoint, how is it determined whether the waypoint should remain contested after the 3 minute defence event is finished? Does an enemy player have to be inside the keep, or just nearby? Is it therefore possible to keep a waypoint permanently contested just by tagging the gate once then standing near a wall?
Having soul bound rewards from an account bound reward system is utterly nonsense.
This.
The only two good solutions I see are to either add some level 80 centaurs somewhere or to change the requirement to some other type of heavy bag. The second option seems like it would be easiest to implement.
They could always change it to Heavy Loot Bags…
Let’s hope they don’t fix it. With their track record their ”fix” will be to remove fighting in WvW so no one ever goes into the downed state.
I lol’d.
I think they’ve already said they meant proofs of heroics to be soulbound, so the chests not being stackable may be deliberate to make it inconvenient to stockpile the proofs for alts.
Besides, anyone wanting to stockpile them might be interested in obtaining extra bag and bank space. Not that I’m cynical or anything….
Both are valuable to zergs in WvW. Necromancers are the main damage of a zerg with well skills, whereas elementalists play more of a supportive role with healing fields and crowd control skills – although they still have a good damage output.
As for roaming, from my experience I’d say ele is probably more popular as a roaming class, though any class can be good once you learn it. The best advice I can give is to try both and see which one you prefer.
This just proves everybody actually loves the new maps, look how guilds are spending all their time in PvE making money to pay for upgrading objectives. That’s why they appear empty.
Seriously though, how much gold do they think WvW players have, or make from playing WvW?
“Deli.1302
Not true, FSP has a large hardcore wvw population and it’s dead this week"
“Saephaan.7285
fsp is literally the 3rd best server according to leaderboard on wvw. and you say they have mostly casual ppl? ok whatever you say"
:)
From a WvW perspective now, Friday night, once the busiest and most fun night of the week, is a total blowout. Any talk of big Friday night PPT pushes that everyone can join will prove to be wide of the mark, as the biggest PPT push will be from whichever server can night/morning cap immediately prior to the morning reset. This is, of course, all assuming the matchup is still close enough to be worth bothering about at that point, and in a lot of cases it isn’t.
Furthermore, in what universe is Saturday morning more inclusive than Friday night? Can you really think you’ll get more people online at 10am-noon on a Saturday than on a Friday evening? What about parents who have children to look after? What about people who work in retail? What about people who work in pretty much any job Monday to Friday and therefore probably have things to do on Saturday morning? I don’t consider it unreasonable to assume that the number of those people outnumber the people who work Friday night and can play Saturday morning. Nor that the experience of reset for those who can play would be lessened by the absence of all the people mentioned above.
This is a poorly thought out idea with flawed justification, seeming to take no account of what the playerbase wants.
EDIT: My sympathies to the OCX/SEA WvW players who’ve been horrendously screwed over by this.
(edited by Joshhh.2076)
Considering how low the droprate was to begin with, 18 hours probably isn’t enough time to guage whether anything has changed.
If you’ve ever received a salty whisper from someone who didn’t like that you killed them, or decided you’re a hacker because they don’t know as much about the game as they think they do, imagine that x 200.
Nope, it doesn’t exist. The best suggestion I could offer is to see if your server has a community WvW guild where you could call for help, or even see if any of the WvW guilds would be willing to expand to take on such a role for scouting purposes.
All this talk about zergs hiding inside keeps behind AC’s, what about the 5 people who spend a few hours upgrading a keep and are the only ones there to defend it when a zerg comes knocking? Should they not have at least a fighting chance of even delaying the zerg? Or should they just kitten defending off and leave you to PvD in peace? What this change has done is make defending harder for outnumbered servers.
Happens to me when I go in water too, every time.
