[Fissure of Woe]
Wow man, you seriously claim to be a Ranger pro?
“That’s “great”. So longbow let’s a bad player safely sit back and auto-attack. Occasionally hitting #2 when it’s off cd. This is a bit difficult to do against some bosses as well that don’t give you 1,500 range. For example, the Blizzard Fractal comes to mind."
This does not mean every single situation, as nothing on any class will work in every single situation. Sorry but your just being an idiot now
“Having 1,500 range does not make a person mobile siege engine. You’d have to hit much harder and in an AOE. You’d also need more than 1,500 range.”
If you were going to take this in a literal manner you should have added in the ability to transform into inanimate objects too. What other class can do AoE at 1500 range?
“You can “buff” the team using spirits … but only if they stay close enough to the spirits (lol) … which means the spirits are often close enough to get sneezed on (see: dead spirit) … a short duration protection, a chance to get +10% damage, or a chance to inflict a very short duration burn … these are not powerful. A chance to do +10% damage is very weak compared to a guardian simply using their staff to heal and stack might on nearby allies, warriors shouting For Great Justice, Mesmers sharing boons with Signet of Inspiration, etc."
You’ve never actually used spirits in WvW before have you? if you place a spirit behind a wall on siege defence or at the back of your team in a zerg, how will it die?. Guardians will have to stop and use empower to buff thier allies where as a Ranger simply puts down a spirit and continues doing whatever he was doing FOR ANOTHER MINUTE. Fire and forget kind of skill. Also, Im not sure if there is a max cap on how many people can get the spirit buffs. Can someone confirm this?. Empower is capped at 5 and requires the Guardian to be on the wall being rather ineffective to give that might to his allies.
“By “blanketing an area” I assume you mean barrage … possibly traps. Barrage is on a fairly long cooldown and easily dodge rolled out of. Traps have a 600 range at best (i.e. traited). If you want someone to blanket an area, you grab a staff necro or elementalist."
It is not only limited to barrage. Rapid fire is also very good for doing this. You dont need a target to actually shoot people in GW2. This is one of the best things about the LB.
“Best dueling in sPvP? Lol. Take a look at elementalist kiddo.”
Don’t take my word for it. It is the general view of the GW2 community. If you think otherwise. Good for you.
“Best from a PvE perspective? Lmao. This belongs to guardians hands down. There is a reason you see on gw2lfg.com “Group LFM … Guardian please” and “Group LFM … no Rangers”. You never see the inverse. People don’t ever complain that there are too many Guardians (or Warriors). People complain that there are too many Rangers if there are 1+ or 2+."
You clearly are describing dungeon running and fractals instances. Is this all you limit your mind to think that PvE is? The Ranger is the most superior class in open world PvE. No class can match what it can do. Am I wrong? I don’t think so. This is an area where poor pet AI does not become a negative. This is the area that the Rangers are at its strongest.
Seriously, I am beginning to doubt your knowledge just on the fact that you are trying to prove my every point wrong based on your silly assumptions. Limited, far too limited.
PvE perspective. The best out right class for PvE. There is no class that can equal what a Ranger can do in PvE.
There’s no way you actually believe this, right?
No one can be this delusional.
PvE, open world. Not a dungeon environment. get it?
So you’ve answered your own question. Originally you wanted to know how sb’s bleeds compare to lb burst. Now you say you’re unlikely to ever flank someone. So in that instance the burst will be higher, because the sb can’t bleed.
Are you trying to compare the bleeds alone vs. longbow burst, or the whole of sb damage during a span of time? We can agree that counting on flanking someone during a battle is a poor decision, so it would be equally unwise to have a condition build based on bleeds from sb 1.
It is precisely because there are so many factors involved that I might come across as belligerent or nitpicky. I’m trying to nail down exactly what you’re trying to test. We can’t test “sb is better than lb” because, as we both agree, there are so many situations and circumstances effecting performance that its impossible to have one answer to such a broad question.
Even if we were to ask: “Given a fairly mobile battle, with a mid-number of players (approx 5 on each side), would the shortbow outperform the longbow?” this situation would be incomplete because we can’t account for the professions with us or against us, and how cc effects might change potential damage situations for a shortbow or longbow, or how terrain could give you an advantage with either weapon.
So I’m asking that you try to be a little more specific in what you’re asking, so we all know what question to answer.
At last, someone who understands
The Longbow is a max ranged weapon. This is clearly highlighted by being penalised for being too close to the enemy. It’s applications are clear in the design of the weapon.
Now if you were to try and use that weapon not to its design then complain that it doesn’t work very well…. that’s just a bit silly isn’t it.
The Sb was designed to be used within a 1200 range. Quick firing condition based weapon which compliments fluid playstyles where a lot of dodging and moving is key to success.
The LB is designed to be a static weapon. Shoots over 1200. Has greater CC abilities. Higher burst damage capabilities.
These weapons are designed to be used differently. Once you have their potential damage numbers, do you then subtract according to situations and scenarios?
This is a very similar discussion to the one in the Guardians forum about Hammer and GS.
Now the question. Does the bleed damage from SB = to the same as the LB burst at point blank range?
I assume you mean LB 3 -> LB 2 when you speak of burst dmg at point blank?
You would have to specify what traits you have when figuring this out. SB needs to flank to get bleeds, but do you have the trait for increased damage while flanking?
Does the person using the LB have the same traits, if so are they also behind the target?
And over what period of time? If you mean only during the time it takes to get LB burst off, then obviously LB will have higher dmg, that’s what burst means.
I would be curious myself if someone could come up with solid, explainable, numbers to present.
In a combat situation the likeliness of flanking someone is very slim.
Both parties will be build to have 100% combat effectiveness ie condition build for SB and power build for LB.
Then its a factor of play style vs playstyle. LB is always paired with another weapon. SB users generally don’t weapon swap. What are the actual effective numbers when this scenario is in play.
There are many scenarios and factors that have to be calculated to get a “true” number. Basing everything on potential damage is worthless. How many times do you find yourself in a situation where you are always flanking someone?
LB may be at its best at range but it is still viable at close Range. Why? because weapon swap.
LB/GS – use LB to shoot from far. Use barrage over yourself as enemy closes. Swap to GS and fight for 10 seconds. Swap back for Rapid fire burst at point blank range (this negates the moving back and forth dodging the arrows that can be done at max range)
You even have the choice of LB/SB. Use LB at 1200-1500 range. Swap to SB when below 1200 range.
I don’t think anyone uses the LB for its auto.
Now the question. Does the bleed damage from SB = to the same as the LB burst at point blank range?
Just to nitpick the logic a little, you (and you aren’t the first in the thread to do it) have just described how a weapon combination is viable, or even why the greatsword is viable.
Just to be clear, I’m not disagreeing. But if this is supposed to be a direct comparison of longbow vs shortbow, then there shouldn’t be other weapons factored in. It should be a comparison of how each weapon performs and how it compares to the other at close/medium/long range, and what each weapon has access to on the skill bar and through utilities/traits to make it more viable. The type of comparison you made is like me using a (just an example) pool noodle and rocket launcher combo. I can hit somebody with the noodle all day and it not be effective, then gib them with a rocket launcher. But that doesn’t make the noodle a more viable choice, that makes the rocket launcher a more viable choice.
My comparisons have to include weapon swapping as it is a more realistic way to judge the weapon. If you only calculate with pure numbers and not factor in conditions such as battle situations and builds, the numbers you come out with will just be floating numbers that have no “true” impact on the class.
Can you actually compare SB to LB? both are designed to be used in different situations. Can you compare an apple to an orange? they are both fruit.
So you say you can do “it”. But then your definition of “it” isn’t something that can be done. Whatever it is you say you can do needs to be an action, not claims other people make.
When answering a question, its good to make sure your response is actually addressing the question.
“Can do it” boils down to showing that these claims are ridiculous and over played just toget the Ranger to be super buffed and OP.
The class itself is not broken. It is equipped to be very good in WvW. They are definitely not rubbish in dungeons. Pets dont die ALL the time. And last but not least, their effective damage is very high.
Rangers are good at what Rangers. Not all classes need to be the same. Do the same things. Work the same way. Do the same damage.
Doing it is making it work. If i, a noob Ranger have been able to make it work. What is all the QQ about? Nothing but being destructive to your own community.
Hey you’re the one that said Ranger dps is godly. I think most of us here do like our rangers and have found ways to make them work, but we’re not deluded enough to say that they are godly. There absolutely nothing that is godly about rangers at all.
Being able to constantly do damage (pretty decent damage at that) at a completely safe range whilst able to support your team (via pets skills and your own utilities).
That is godly. No other class can do this anywhere near as good as a Ranger.
Ranger is not the only class that can attack from afar.
Other classes can close that distance VERY quickly.
The pet is nullified by its target moving any direction except backwards. This is not Godly. If the pet’s AI let it hurt moving targets reliably, then we could start talking.
On a Dungeon perspective. Many bosses or mobs have not got the capability to hit over 1200 range. this means you can position yourself in safety and jump bomb the designated area from afar. This also allows you to monitor the battleground/zone and act accordingly. Support with pets. Damage light mobs. Shut down heavy mobs. etc being very good at range it means you can keep DPS up even if a boss teleports. Mass fear. Knock back or stun the team that are in range of such attacks (thus reducing the DPS of those hit by the skills)
From a WvW perspective. You become a mobile siege engine. Keep and fort defence specialist. You can shoot attackers and siege machines from places the enemy cant get you. You can blanket an area to support your team. You can use utilities to buff the entire team of defenders (within range of spirits). You can solo roam very effectively. If the enemy can close the distance very fast. Get out your GS and start whacking. You are not only limited to ranged fights.
Spvp perspective. Best duelist in the game. not much can say about that.
PvE perspective. The best out right class for PvE. There is no class that can equal what a Ranger can do in PvE.

Here’s a suggestion,
Instead of a spirits unbound making spirits follow you. Perhaps it can do the reverse (and name it accordingly)
As a GM trait, the spirits passive buff comes from the player himself rather then an actual killable spirit. Shorten the time on it by 1/2 (30 seconds is still a long time) the utilities from the spirits will still be available. Range of buff remains at 900.
Powerful, but you have to trait 30 into SM to get it. Worthy of a GM trait.
if you use auto target
S&R res dead people using a dead pet. Is amazingly powerful. Imagine your unfortunate allies coming to defend your keep but died at the gate. Instead of having to use a waypoint that is miles away. They can be ressed and quickly run into the keep.
There are many applications of these utilities. Just because some don’t see it does not mean they aren’t there.
Team mates keep getting killed by lupicus? get your pet to res them whilst you are in relative safety so he doesn’t reset (if everyone else is dead)
Another one is to prove how good i am at dueling to prove my point that Ranger has one of the best effective damage in the game…. Dueling me would just prove my lack of skill in a duel scenario. Has nothing to do with the point if Rangers having one of the best effective damage in the game.
If you are not good at dueling I would advise you to not make a claim about rangers and dueling.
To have a good grasp of a class with regards to PvP you have to have a good grasp on PvP. Leave backing/denying a claim like that to people who are on top of the PvP Ladder or else it will just be a bunch of bickering, if that makes sense.
Select videos are only so good on a ranger since there is the pet rng factor. It brings more random than any other class into play at least if you run wolves.
Im not over confident on my Ranger. There are still things I need to learn. This is being realistic. I will not claim to be the best duelist or PvPer. But when I beat people in WvW… what does that say? is it me? or is it the class? or is it the opponent?
The Ranger class is very diverse. The pet options are very diverse. It allows for very strategic gameplay.
From the vibe Im getting from some people, they are simply trying to make Rangers into a 1 trick pony like warrior. If your not doing any damage, you are no good. This is absolutely rubbish. If it were true, warriors would be the best class in the game hands down.
I’ll make my WvW video. Im not the best duelist in the world. Neither are 99% of the WvW population. So does it really matter?
Very primitive Alpha male mentality. "If your not the best at something then everything you say is false… " god help mankind.
So you say you can do “it”. But then your definition of “it” isn’t something that can be done. Whatever it is you say you can do needs to be an action, not claims other people make.

Oh and to answer what “it” is.
Rangers are so broken and cant be played in WvW.
Rangers are so broken their damage is the worst in the game bar engineers.
Rangers Longbow is useless and shouldnt be used.
Rangers are rubbish in dungeons because the pets die all the time.
Main issues I hear people QQ about. To the point where it makes new players not want to even make a Ranger.
This is a dying class. But it shouldnt be.
What questions are these?
So far its a matter of presenting a video to back my claim of Rangers having one of the best effective damage in the game. This is coming.
Another one is to prove how good i am at dueling to prove my point that Ranger has one of the best effective damage in the game. In my OP i already claim thst i am not the best Ranger in the world. Dueling me would just prove my lack of skill in a duel scenario. Has nothing to do with the point if Rangers having one of the best effective damage in the game.
Videos are coming. Just be patient
- First
But like I said. If a noob Ranger like me can do it, whats stopping you pros?
What exactly is this “it” you’re able to do?
- Second
… now, back to my question … what is this “it” you’re saying you’re able to accomplish.
Others are, dueling request ignored, dungeon questions ignored, and still not addressing potential damage and actual damage.
For the video, please don’t forget some dungeon run footage of pets actually staying alive for the whole duration of the dungeon, because this thread isn’t just about WvW.
We need discussions with evidences, not just threads with baseless claims.
Will do ^_-
So, is OP going to make some videos himself or not?
From what I see, Xsorus here is the most experienced and with the most videos to back up his own claim.
What about KensaiZen? Just a bunch of hot air, claiming how good ranger is without even answering some questions people ask in the thread.
What questions are these?

All this just reminds me of the time i got called out for claiming i couldnt hit higher than 3-4k with MB on a Guardian or it was impossible to facetank a champion in Orr (hope i wasnt the reason why they buffed the champions in Orr…. but then they did remove the ooze king)
Videos are coming. Just be patient
I’m getting sick and tired of posts by KensaiZen.3740, Chopps.5047, and Durzlla.6295.
You three keep making unfounded, often completely incorrect (Chopps especially) posts in the Ranger forums and make no efforts to prove any of your claims (and to many of us it’s obvious why).
I am getting tired of the misinformation garbage going on.
If you want to claim something on the Ranger is good, do like Sol does and make videos of yourself using it with great success against non-baddies.
If you don’t have the skills to do this, I’m not sure why you’re trying to expound upon how any build is good as a baddie isn’t going to get much of a different result from different builds (Thieves excluded … but that class is a dumb anomaly)
This
Read the whole thread and was like: I don’t even…
KensaiZen is the most clueless poster on this forum.
I’ve mained ranger from headstart, and consider myself pretty good, but there is no denying that classes like thiefs etc can destroy zerker builds if theyre atleast half competent.
I’m really looking forward to your videos KensaiZen, lol.
If you have been reading i do actually say zerker builds dont work against thieves funny how i am wrong for saying the same thing.
Riiight... you must be amazingly pro. How about you put up some videos of yourself in action in WvW. Unedited of course
Starting to wish I can afford to pay for your transfer
What will happen in WvW if you pop SoS is i’ll stealth and wait for it to run out….If you pop protect me, i’ll just kill your pet before I kill you (though I can easily stealth again at that point)
SoS/ProtectMe work against other classes, it doesn’t work against a Thief.
Well if wait for it to run out you’ve already given the advantage to the ranger. Rangers given 6 seconds to regen their health back.
Does not work against thief? Tell it to the theifs on blacktide and vabbi.
You realize how much I heal for while stealthed?
Its more then you heal for on a ranger.
Either that or gain distance for when stealth is gone to have a gap.
lol……………… You say that like it makes a difference.
Steal = 900 range – Requires Target
Infiltrators Arrow = 900 range – Does not require Target, and applies Blind in a Blast radius, large enough to hit the Ranger you’re chasing who just used Swoop gaining a 1,100 range from you.
Infiltrators Signet = 900 range – Requires Target
Infiltrators Strike = 600 range – Requires Target, but will put a circle down without a target to teleport back to. The Teleport back to ability has no range, as long as you utilize it while it is still available.
Shadowstep = 1200 range – And allows for a return when you want to use it.
So how many skills would you waste to get back to melee range. How many are already on cooldown or spent initiative as combat had been engaged.
I’m sure you as a omfg pro duelist would know you, the first 10 seconds of a fight is make or break. Or are you seriously suggesting you would use none of those skills to jump me in the first place.
Hmmm makes me wonder

And i would be standing still to regen instead of swinging with a GS to try and do extra damage as well as use AoE?
Either that or gain distance for when stealth is gone to have a gap.
There are many scenarios that can be played.
Just wait for the videos.
Ok, lets put it this way. For simple number crunching on a target that stands still, a guardian will do slighty more damage with WW.
However, what number crunchers dont seem to understand is that numbers mean nothing if it doesnt hit. Months ago the Guardian community realised this and stopped trying to compare Guardians to warriors. Why? Because Guardians werent meant to do high burst damage. Combat effectivenes of a Guardian in WvW is also higher without that burst damage.
Now, there is an argument in the Guardian WvW community on which weapon is better for WvW. GS or Hammer. Hammer wins. Why? Not because it does a higher number damage to WW. Simply because its % to land it means it will actually do damage. Anyoneand their mother can avoid 90% of the damage of WW with a simple dodge.
The comparison between WW and RF is just stupid. On the field, you will always land more hits with RF. This means the actual damage of the weapon is greater. You cant avoid RF with 1 dodge roll.
Now comparing the damage range of a LB Ranger and GS Guardian. It is comparable. The numbers may not be exactly the same but it is not far off. However, the Ranger has the potential to increase this damage where the Guardian does not. Sure its not as high as a warrior but it is enough. Add to this fact that the Rangers damage is at range, the actual effectiveness increases much more.
Why are warriors not considered kings of WvW? Because their effective damage is pretty low.
Effective damage wise, the Ranger is quite up there. Learn the difference between potential damage and effective damage.
RF is ridiculously easy to dodge as well, plus I have ways to make sure that you will take at least as much damage from WW as you could possibly do with RF. I am we’ll aware of the difference between potential and effective damage. Thats why I keep saying your effective damage will be lower because it will always be tied to your pet.
How about this for a kicker… a guardian using a scepter will do more damage than you could hope to match with either your longbow or short bow. So a dps spec guardian can use his great sword for superior single target and AoE dps and then easily switch to his scepter for a little more range and still do more dps.
I honestly don’t know what you are trying to prove. I love my ranger b/c of his mobility, but I also realize that I could always do more damage with my guardian and my power/crit spec necro.
Ok now you mention swapping weapons to increase damage. Do you think ranger cannot?
Guess it boils down to evidence it will come soon.
So dueling you would prove what exactly?
That you can make it work. The issue with DPS, is you have to be able to do it, to make it worth while. If you’re dead, you’re not DPSing.
I want you to see first hand what I mean by that.
If you went 30 points to get the extra range on Longbow, I’m going to kill you so fast on any of my toons, you’ll be like whaaat? How is he still full health, and I’m dead? O.O
So staying at max range ikittenerg, on a wall, in a dungeon is reflected in what way in a duel situation?
Anywsy. Come and transfer. I’ll be waiting. We can even record it to shame me if you like
What will happen in WvW if you pop SoS is i’ll stealth and wait for it to run out….If you pop protect me, i’ll just kill your pet before I kill you (though I can easily stealth again at that point)

And how does me dueling him change the fact there is a difference between potential damage and effective damage?
I will make a video however im not paying for some hussler to come duel me. If you want to come duel me, this extends to anyone. By all means come and duel me.
Oh and btw everything i wrote in that post relates how to a duel situation? Nice try
Either be patient and wait for the evidence or you can pay for your own transfer. I will not duel for money. End of story.
So dueling you would prove what exactly?
Do you want to prove this point? Go and hit a dummy for 1 minute. Record damage. Now go into WvW and join a battle for 1 minute. Record damage.
Does all your damage equal that of hitting the dummy?
Come and duel me anytime. Im not going to pay for it though.
I never claimed to be really good at the class. And being experienced with it or not has any relevence to what is being discussed.
If you want to find out how good i am. You can transfer to my tier. I can offer 10000000g per fight if you like. Its not like i can pay you if i lose more then i win.
If you want to find out. You know what you have to do. Dont throw around gold and use it as leverage it doesnt work. Im not afraid to duel you. I am also not under the illusion that i am that good with a Ranger.
Nice try though.
Think someone is trying to hussle me nice try.
Call me whatever you like. You want to find out, you pay for it. From where i stand i dont need to prove that actual combat damage is different to hitting a dummy.
You sound like someone rich challenging 100g per fight. I dont even have 10g but i will gladly fight you. Im sure you can afford the server transfer.
Sure i will fight you in WvW. No bets though i dont fight for money. I never said i was a pro Ranger so trying to earn money from me is just gold digging. Can go do your gold digging somewhere else.
For some strange reason you sound like this guy who tried to challenge my Guardian.
If you fancy the fight. You can server transfer to Vabbi. I will gladly fight you on all your toons.
As a Ranger, use SoS and let the theif blow his initiative doinkittenage to you. When 6 seconds is over, use protect me to deny even more damage.
All this while your swinging away at them with a GS and your Jaguarclawing them to death. Havent lost to a melee class yet on this set up.
12 seconds of damage denial is very powerful.
Escape? What is this mythical thing you speak of? Lol
I think he was using it in the context of damage mobility. Warriors HB does high damage but doesnt actually hit anything since people move around.
Guardian combat is more fluid.
Effective DPS on the Guardian is better. Warriors have high potential damage. But their big hit skills are easy to avoid.
Ok, lets put it this way. For simple number crunching on a target that stands still, a guardian will do slighty more damage with WW.

I have my set up this way as I also do a lot of roaming. I don’t stick to zergs much. But I can do when I have to.
GC Rangers only survive with protection from a group. If you look to be alive when moving from A to B survival is where its at. You don’t need to be “in the thick of it” to tag people, neither do you have to do massive amounts of damage.
Though tbh my build is irrelevant to how to use a longbow. the synergy for longbow is with marksmanship. You can put the rest of the points anywhere else and still do the same thing.
“That said, it still won’t approach the bags you can attain by playing Guard or Necro. Guard staff = CRAZY bag returns(5 players hit per swing vs a Ranger who has to swap targets quick to maximize overall lootbags).”
You also missed the key part about this play style. You don’t need a target. There is no switching of targets. You simply fire volley after volley in the area where the enemy is. As long as you are still alive and firing, the chances of lootbags % goes up as the damage counter keeps ticking. You can spread the arc of your arrows by turning with the camera which has no need for a target.
Running through a zerg as a ranger is suicide. Even with protect me and SoS traited you will still drop from the amount of conditions and CC you will get hit with.
A Ranger is not a guardian nor is it a Necro. That particular playstyle doesn’t work with this class.
Low toughness, not GM healing skills, looks to me like a mid range Guardian playstyle.
With your traits how it is, your not going to be doing fantastic damage of any kind. Might want to go for clerics armour and be a Support guardian.
If you want specific builds for WvW you have to ask yourself. What is my role? what do I want to do in WvW? once you know this you will be able to build it accordingly.
Lanny is very much correct. The LB is not suited for people who like to skirmish as it penalises you for doing so (reduction in damage within certain range). You can still use it in a skirmish, though it requires much more skill than using a SB.
SB is designed for the close in fighting/mid range. It has a faster auto attack which allows for a more fluid dodging play style. Also the conditions it provides also synergise with the play style.
The LB design is to be used at very long range. It is perfect for zerg warfare and sieges. It is also a control weapon. There is great synergy between LB and spirits which usually means a lot more static kind of warfare.
trying to use a LB like a SB and claiming it doesn’t work or vice versa doesn’t actually give proper representation of the weapons and its role.
+1 for Ebonblade. It is nice and refined. Nothing too FF omfg massive weapon on a small toon look. Great on a female human Ranger.
I’ll see if I can get a Vid for you tonight running CoF with my Ranger. It’s really not that bad if you manage your pet well. Sure the pet can do with some improvement, but its not the end of the world.
:) I love my Guardian. Played it since Launch. Barely touched it after I made a Ranger.
If you enjoy a challenge and like a class with a high skill lvl. Definitely play a Ranger. This is where the FUN is at
LB/GS Signet build/Beastmaster – mobility and range support (WvW)
LB/GS Sprits – Dungeon running
LB/GS Traps – Farming in frostgorge or Orr
Longbow as main with traits 10% with 100% endurance, Eagle eye 1500 range, Piercing arrows.
Great sword as secondary, Martial mastery traited for reduction to skills.
30/0/30/5/5 (tonnes of survival)
The key is positioning and placement. With a SB you have to go within 900-1200 to make it affective. This generally means you have to put yourself at the front of the zerg to get the maximum out of your piercing shots. When someone on the other side see’s a ranger on the front line. Its an automatic trigger into their heads to charge in and kill it. As you are also a GC Ranger, it takes no longer than 3 seconds to kill you.
Now here is where the longbow comes into play. Put into the same zerg vs zerg scenario, you can stand within 1300-1500 and still make piercing shots work. By staying beyond 1200 you are not in danger of any of the enemies attacks or CC skills. There are other players who will be standing infront of you to be the juicy target that the enemy will rush out to get first.
This is proper strategic placement. As the enemy keep moving left and right you will tag them all as they move into your arrows. You can even move the Camera to aim left and right and not having to fire in just one line. Since you are firing from relative safety, you can even pick your targets. Someone tried to make a charge forward and failed and hobbling back into their lines? you can down them even when they are in enemy lines.
Bags also drop where you are standing so having to pick them up whilst in the safety of your own zerg is viable.
If the battle moves and the zerg is broken, switch to GS and use GS3 to gtfo of danger. Very few classes will catch you. And with 1200 range head start to when you run… no class will.
Longbows have taken a very bad rep, but mainly it is due to people not knowing how to use it properly.
Combat effectiveness for all classes have a maximum range of 1200 bar Ranger and necro. But Rangers have the advantage in 1500 range.
That can be done by anyone. on a 1 man part of a zerg situation.
Now here is the romanticism.
Imagine a team of 5 Rangers all with LB firing in front of their zerg in a line/formation. The zerg moves slowly forward decimating anything that comes into the line of fire. The kill zone is 1200 in front of your zerg. Now if you want to visualise it, imagine a phalanx with spears 1500 range long.
To get into even max range of 1200 for all the other classes they have to wade into a line of arrows turning them into pin cushions. Cloths get torn to pieces. Mediums don’t last long either. Heavy’s just cant get into proper range to be of any use.
Now imagine a mesmer popping time warp onto this crew of archers. All archers time their LB2 and move forward at the same time. Zerg melted.
Shortbow is for skirmishes and effective within 900-1200 range. This puts you in very big danger from all classes. Don’t spec GC and use SB. I’ve played GC with much better success in WvW only whilst defending or sticking withikittenerg with a LB. When i tried using a SB as a GC… there is a very low..VERY low success rate.
Im not actually talking about barrage but it also works just the same thought at 1200 range.
You can manually line your shots with LB2 or just auto and will tag much more enemies then if you had a target selected. It also fires at 1500 so every enemy clumped together out of 1200 range is still an easy target.
Rangers need to learn to position themselves and also look at the battle field they are fighting in. Fire into bottle necks. Lob arrows into the side of zergs. Lob arrows into the front of zergs. You can herd people into fire zones if you do it right.
Its all about control. Its not about shooting st one guy and hopes the arrow hits more people. It is about making sure the arrow was intended to hit more people to begin with.
A team of rangers will melt zergs. Shame because of so much QQ from Ranger community Rangers are so few these days.
LB 1500 range and trait for piercing arrows, turn off auto target. All you have to do is blanket the area the zerg is in with arrows.
You dont need clear line of sight, you hit people who think they are out of range.
Show me how we can cripple an enemy, and I’ll send you in-game gold.
Human guards have access to prayer to dwayna. More often then not this skill cripples the opponent when used from a Guardian.
The Rangers damage is comparable to the Guardians damage. A normal attack is around the 700-800 (1st trait line maxed) crits for about 1300-1400 (berserker earrings and amulet and knights rings)
This is comparable to the Guardian with full berserkers accessories. And as we all know, Guardians may not hit as had as warriors, but they have no trouble killing any other classes.
Guardians (In mostly Zerker gear) hit for much more than that. Sword (One hander) auto attack crits for 2k on the normal swings and 3x 1k on the finisher.
~6-7k on the short channel attack.
The rest of your post is nonsense, but yeah, if you want to cheerleader a broken class go for it.
Your comparing a glass cannon 1h sword Guardian to a non glass cannon Ranger. well done.
LB2 hits for 6-7k non glass cannon build at a range of 1500 (traited) and can hit up to 5 people at the same time.
See the difference?
I will continue to experiment with the Class to see how “broken” it really is. Just to throw it out there though I have worked in QA in one of the largest games developer/publishers for over 4 years and do have some merit in knowing what is as designed and what is broken.
There is a reason different pets do different damage scales. As designed.
And I can hit for 6-8k with whirling wrath on up to 5 targets as well with my non-glass cannon Guardian. I don’t think he was comparing a glass cannon guardian b/c I can certainly hit those numbers while keeping a decent amount of armor (2.6k+ armor).
Well thats great isnt it. Rangers and guardians are on par for burst damage from their channelled skill.
Now add in pet damage for the Ranger. It doesnt have to be a jaguar or bird for higher numbers. Even adding a bear or devourer damage will increase ranger damage considerably.
Though tbh getting those figures on a guardian you would need to be loaded with crit dmg %. 2600 armour on a guardian is on the low end of the spectrum.
This is the point I am trying to make. I don’t believe the Ranger class was designed to be Uber DPS kill everything in 3 hits type of class. Which is why if you compare it with a test that tests DPS… the results are obvious.
Its like judging how good a fish is by making it climb a tree.
So you’re saying Anet’s advertisement of “any class can do anything” is basically a lie?
They didnt lie at all. People just jumped to conclusion that “any class can do anything” translates as “every class is good at everything”
I’ve been running dungeons constantly with the Ranger and have found this class to be amazingly versatile and by simply switching utilities for the right encounter (am I going to be a turret or do I need to kite) The speed does not decrease.
I’ve been running CoF path 1 constantly with my ranger, guardian, ele, and engi. I can tell you that ranger comes out last even all classes go zerker build. It’s impossible to clear it under 6 minutes with 4 rangers and a mesmer…. well, let’s just say this, any combination of classes are faster than 4 rangers. I would really like to see a video of dungeon runs other than CoF path 1 where pets never die, because let’s face it, that path is just too easy.

You can maintain a good amount of regen if you use 2 pets that have them.
Ranger pets on land with Regen for group:
(1) Fern Hound
(2) N/ADo please explain what you’re talking about here. I’d love to know what “2 pets that use them” (regen) you’re talking about.
Oh my bad, not 2 pets with regen. Just 1 regen and one outright AoE heal. So thats one regen and a little burst healing. I never claim to be a master at the class and know everything. But like I said. If a noob Ranger like me can do it, whats stopping you pros?
What exactly is this “it” you’re able to do?
When it comes to comparing my Ranger to my Mesmer, people want my Mesmer, they couldn’t care less about the Ranger (even prefer it to not be there).
My Mesmer can be extremely useful in both 1v1, skirmishes, and zergs with one build. My Ranger cannot.
I am pretty sure You and I know what Mesmers are good for. But can you enlighten me as o the role Rangers play in WvW?

Uhhh.. You’re the one who gave the guardian example. I was simply correcting your wrong numbers.
Also, ‘can hit up to 5 people’ if they just so happen to stand in line for the entire duration of an extremely slow channel with an extremely long flight time… hahahahaha.
And which idiot stands and lets the Guardian with a 1h sword get his entire combo out on him?
“Can hit up to 5 people” does not mean it will always hit 5 people. There other part of this is player positioning. Position yourself so that your piercing arrows hits as many people as possible. You are not rooted when using LB2. Add all this damage together and you will get way more potential damage then a sword guardian.
Now its a good point that you mention why did i bring a comparison to guardian. Guardians are considered quite OP but their damage is comparable to Rangers (without adding in pet damage).
