The more you know, knowing is half the battle, etc.

After several hours of running dolyaks in TCBL, I have to say that both Blackgate and Sanctum of Rall are well in control of their tactics. Several times I saw you guys hit up empty camps just to kill yaks and pull out — I don’t think I’ve seen you guys push hard against empty camps yet.

I could be wrong but in my experience thus far the only times my yaks died were when they got ganked in a camp (immediately after I turned in supply on the opposite end of the map), or when a zerg rolled over me. First impressions are that you guys are miles above Tier 3 in terms of knowing how to control supply.

What are the top support classes for W vs W?

in WvW

Posted by: Kerithlan.1659

Kerithlan.1659

WvW support checklist:

Speed boosts?
Stability?
Reflects/destroys/counters projectiles?
Mass condition removal (for the newbies)?
Knockback?
Potential to heal/provide Protection/Regeneration/Aegis?
Group stealth?
Portals?
Ability to block passage?

If your build covers at least three of those, then you’re running support to some extent. Some items on that list are more important than others, but they all come into play depending on what you’re doing.

In general guardian and elementalist are the ones you’ll see most often running it, but literally every profession can contribute in some way to a support role, depending on your task.

TC is prepared to bunker down, dig in and hold on to the best of our abilities. If we make it through this week (which I think we will), then don’t pass judgment on us as the holiday is still in action. Let’s all agree, right now, not to be hasty in our “feeling out” processes, as we’ll have plenty of time to see what we’re all really like next week.

The state of WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Kerithlan.1659

Kerithlan.1659

I think that guilds would be more inclined to claim and defend locations if each event that expires while under that guild’s control granted influence boosts (much higher above the normal rate) as long as one member of the representing guild was present.

To make that more interesting, perhaps allow guilds to customize guards in some way, or have a choice in siege placement for things like mortars and cannons, or have a way to repair damaged siege (again like mortars and cannons). I see oil drums and cannons sitting for hours and hours and frankly it’s depressing to know that you can’t really do anything about it.

Edit:
Maybe instead of breakout events there should be assassination events, where a small troupe of npc thieves would hop into the lord room (towers only) and sweep the place if left unchecked (let’s say it takes 5 minutes), which would cause the tower to go neutral. Neutral towers would slowly deteriorate at random until the walls and/or gate crumbled (let’s say it takes 10 minutes for something to break), at which point any server could just walk in and take it uncontested.

Doing something like this instead of breakout events would achieve a similar effect without hurting diligent invading forces. If it took a group of ~5 to protect the tower from the assassination attempt then there’d be an incentive for people to stick behind. It’d get rid of the zerg-and-flip gameplay to an extent as it’d require people to stay behind and watch over things, and it’d discourage people from entering a borderland, claiming everything, laughing and leaving while they gain thousands of uncontested points overnight.

I personally would prefer maintenance-style events/gameplay (and to be rewarded for it) than the current system. Create a bunch of tower-neutralizing events like this and have them randomly occur every 20-30 minutes and I am positive that there will be more incentive for guilds to invest in towers. Maybe make one of the guild abilities be a nightwatch to limit the impact of such events, I dunno.

tl;dr
breakout events are horrible, people stop caring about towers once they’re upgraded (you upgrade them so that they last longer/your zerg has more time to get there), guilds don’t really invest in stuff for anything other than the 5 supply bonus

Guide to beating Toypocalypse very easily.

in Wintersday

Posted by: Kerithlan.1659

Kerithlan.1659

East side is super easy to defend.

You can stack two layers of walls each four walls wide very quickly between the circle toy transfer things. Why two walls thick? Because later in the game things start to despawn if they’re ignored, and once a wall is fully upgraded you can’t nurse it anymore. Having two walls ensures that at least some of the walls will be up at all times to block waves.

After that just use any scrap you find to throw down catapults and ballistas all over the map, and build some snowmen/walls around the spawn to help funnel things into your catapult fire.

I was able to do this by myself and neither of the two east yaks took damage. I’m sure that a combination of 3 people fortifying walls and the rest littering the field with siege would result in a 100% success rate.

I was totally in favor of the change until I disconnected three nights in a row. If I’m neck deep in a siege/defense and I disconnect, then the punishment is already hefty for my allies as they’re one body short (especially if I’m carrying the siege or have supply). I don’t need to be scolded for it and slapped with a repair bill.

Hitting randoms from 1200 units away with a scepter and using support shouts at full health with no one hitting me doesn’t mean that I’m about to die. Pretty much what this change does is allow people to farm badges.

Example, one guy from fictional guild I Love Disconnecting [QUIT] is on fictional server Dwayna’s Knickers. DK is in first place this week by over 120k points, and so on Wednesday one member of [QUIT] transfers to opposing fictional server Brownmuck Caverns. Both the DK and BC [QUIT] members then show up in a predetermined spot close to the DK spawn in BCBL, strip naked, and take turns entering combat with their BC comrade and hitting alt-f4, giving him free bags. Their comrade, all fat and sassy on badges/loot, then returns the favor on DKBL.

This just makes a new problem out of an old problem and nothing is actually solved.

huh? the game is not playable other than culling zerg garbage gameplay.

We already did an organized departure, a few of us remain hopeful the game will reach a bare min required for world pvp someday, and will come back.

Lets not pretend the current game state is anything other than unacceptable in quality, and too low on pvp content to retain players interest while waiting to reach minimal quality standards.

You must have played on terrible servers if your experiences limited you to “culling zerg garbage gameplay”.

This is going to be so awkward when were back in a week. The rating system is, odd. Then again CD or FA might get somehow bumped down by IoJ and then bounced back up from T4 in two weeks time.

At least everyone is getting a nice change.

Based off of how other “new-to-tier” servers have influenced things before, it’s probably going to end up like this.

IoJ is going to tank in points this week, but will recover and begin gaining points next week. FA and CD will initially gain points and solidify the tier, but will return to the current status quo shortly after.

Tarnished Coast is initially going to gain a ton of points, but next week will begin losing points. Meanwhile, Sanctum of Rall will lose a small number of points while Blackgate will lose more, only for the status quo to return next week or the week after.

It’s a side effect of how the ranking system works and has nothing to do with the servers themselves. We’re all but guaranteed to be around for two weeks, and anything after that will be either a growing TC population/skill level, or pure luck.

When CD popped into Tier 3 we were losing points (as was FA) while CD gained points, but the next week things instantly changed — not all of that was our servers’ changing things up either. The same thing happened to YB when they dropped down to Tier 4 and is happening to Borlis Pass as they climb their way up.

I’ve worked out what the big update is :

Added new jump puzzles to every map, now you can have twice as many people not helping in wvw as you currently have, and even less chances of entering and playing wvw at busy times as the pve’rs (with commander badges on) dominating numbers while you lose all your upgraded towers and keeps! oh and placing their siege on top of the reward box in the puzzle and spamming chat asking for mesmers to portal them in the jump puzzle.

Any more jump puzzles and this game should be ‘jump puzzle 2’.

I love jumping puzzles. I want more of them.

I don’t want more of them in World vs World, pretty much for the exact reasons you’ve stated. It would just be so much easier to have a WvW daily achievement hand out siege and it would instantly make everything better.

So what I’m getting from this topic is that everyone underestimates themselves, so therefore every server fields giant zergs 24/7 in every map and I should prepare to over-hydrate myself to compensate for the amount of tears I’ll shed this week.

Tears of joy, of sorrow, of pride, of passion, of pain, of courage.

But mostly tears of terror as I watch huge swathes of bodies surge over the landscape and crash into each other. Thousands of players from all three servers are expected to slam into each other in a bloody, sickening mess of limbs, of meat, of blades and of magic. This will be a never-ending sea of flesh and steel. It will ebb and flow throughout the day based off of each individual server’s prime time hours, but otherwise remain an ever-present and ever-demanding demon requiring more bodies be thrown upon its gullet.

In the midst of this horrific scene, players will struggle in fruitless endeavors to capture and retain camps, towers, keeps and castles. Nothing will be sacred and nothing will be under constant control for longer than five minutes. Upgrades will be attempted, but another mass of meat will claim the land before such fortifications can even begin.

Siege will be laid down, and met with counter siege, which in turn will be met by counter counter siege. There will be a never-ending escalation of siege across the shambling sea of corpses and corpses-in-training. Siege caps will be a thing of the past, as each piece of machinery will be destroyed shortly after being created. Nothing will be permanent and nothing will last.

Yes, tears will be shed and bodies will cry out, imploring mercy from the sky. This is what it is like in Tier 2. The prophets posting on these forums have all but proven it to be so. Tarnished Coast, we must take their wisdom to heart and prepare ourselves for what must follow. Armageddon beckons, and we must comply with its wishes.

I shed a single tear for what is to come, for this may be the last tear I shed in comfort.

Re Jaldy:

The longer one continues winning (and the easier those wins become), the more complacent (some) players become. The majority of icon commanders who have fielded easy wins over the past month or so will find themselves in dire straights up in tier 2.

Those of us who play for a challenge tend to play less when that challenge is lacking. This leads to your more casual players, and less experienced icons to ‘run’ maps. Not a bad thing, everyone needs to learn. And in tier 2, those who stick it out the entire week will hopefully learn!

As I said before, next week’s match won’t really be representative of any server’s prowess due to where it falls, but the lethargy that creeps into one’s tactics when faced with little threat (and all credit to FA, CD and YB, they all made EB an exciting place for me at times over the past 2 months) will lead to some swift re-evaluation of competence in tier 2.

~Nyari Cil, Queen of EB

~Nyari Cil, Queen of EB

Well said, but I don’t think complaceny is all to blame.

I guess we’ll see how it goes.

Every time I’ve logged into EB the past couple weeks the first thing I’ve done is checked on our entire third — siege, supply, upgrades, repairs, etc. On more than one occasion I’ve left Rogue’s Quarry only to have it flipped by the time I reach Klovan. To say that we’re complacent is an understatement.

Every single time I log in I spend a solid 30 minutes running supply, repairing walls/gates, replacing siege (even simple things like oil drums), and finishing upgrades. Our night crews don’t bother with maintenance and some of our commanders are oblivious as to what’s going on in our third. They log in and go straight into attacking things.

We might have good defensive habits during our prime time hours but our lower population hours are so sloppy that it hurts. I’m almost positive that this is because people don’t think about or consider defending unless we have a zerg running or are in active control of the map, as at that point we have so many people that people can “be lazy” and sit in camps chatting.

I had a conversation with someone a few days ago after defending Golanta from a CD raid. Jerrifer’s and Klovan were both low on supply and missing upgrades, so I asked a few members of our zerg to stay behind and help me get us back up to strength. The response was, “who cares, we’re winning” — this was from the commander. At that point the zerg left, no one stayed behind, and I spent an hour doing what five of us could have done in 10 minutes.

I’m excited to move up into Tier 2 because I know we’re going to get our kitten kicked. We’re going to get stomped and hopefully spawn camped, and it’s going to happen because people don’t want to stop that one mesmer from camping our dolyaks, or because people don’t double check to make sure everything is repaired, or because our commanders would rather know more about enemy tower supply than our own.

It will be glorious, and it will throw water on the server’s head. If that doesn’t pull us out of the stupor then we’re not fit for Tier 2 anyway. Now that we’re done riding the “winning Tier 3 forever” wave we’re probably going to lose some population when we start getting hammered, but I have confidence in our ability to continue to grow and improve.

(And re: maintenance: I am a PuG in WvW. My guild is small and doesn’t play with me often. For our major guilds to not catch stuff like that with superior communication, numbers, and coordination is shameful. Tarnished Coast, I’m one player. I cannot be the only one doing this if we’re to succeed. It might be a different story in our home borderland, but it sure as hell is a mess in EB.)

I 1v1 people when they’re doing things like attacking my dolyak or scouting my camp. Any other time? Complete waste of my time. I don’t care if I win or lose the fight — I’m going to delay you from completing your task and try to get rid of you, either by making you run or by stomping you.

If I bump into you when I’m out picking flowers and you want to start a fight then I’m going to use all of my fleeing skills to pull you into a tower because kitten that noise. No objective = no fight.

-optimism-

I’m fairly convinced that anybody on CD with a commander tag that doesn’t think they know what they are doing just leaves it off all of the time.

I know that thing makes your chat super busy but I’ve never once got a response from whispering our commanders (excluding those in my guild/in teamspeak with me.) The hodge podge players are fairly good about whispers but I wish I could figure out who dropped this or that piece of siege so I could just offer placement tips to them.

That’s actually really unfortunate, as at least on TC our commanders are fairly responsive. Even if they don’t reply to you to state that they’re taking your thoughts into consideration, on more than one occasion I’ve seen a commander turn the zerg around to help out where I’ve needed them at home after sending them a whisper.

For example I logged into WvW the other morning and our night crew hadn’t repaired Klovan yet. After pointing this out to our commander, he turned everyone around and we played defense for a while. That highlights a few problems with our server, sure, but it also highlights our commanders’ ability and willingness to coordinate and listen.

And for the record Nyari Cil does a lot to mentor people on our server and help us along. Almost every time I’ve been online at the same time as her she’s offered me some sort of advice or example, and I feel it’s helped me improve greatly in a short amount of time. If you’re looking to train randoms and pugs on your own servers, I recommend following her advice.

I see no reason to assume TC is less skilled than CD/FA.

Assuming they are equally skilled, yes, they are winning because they have more people. That’s pretty much the only reason anyone wins the lower brackets.

When FA rolled people in tier 4, it was because we had more people, not because we were more skilled.

TC is rolling people in tier 3, not because they are more skilled, but because they have more people.

The skill is much of a muchness across all these servers. Everyone has good commanders who coordinate and react quickly and help train newbies, execute sound tactical battle plans while sticking to a good larger strategic goal, etc. This game just isn’t that hard.

Saying TC is winning only because of their population is not the same thing as saying they would be losing if the populations were equal.

All else being equal, the largest population server wins. TC has by far the biggest population for tier 3, and as a result of that, is winning.

If they had the same population as CD/FA it would no doubt be a good tough fight. The only reason TC is winning so handily is because it has more people: that’s not the same thing as saying if it had equal #’s of people it would be losing.

TC have shown themselves to be capable opponents and despite the strengths of FA/CD servers, I imagine they could hold their own on an equal numbers footing. I don’t think they’d just roll over and die.

Despite everything else that everyone has posted, thank you for this breath of rationally fresh air.

Penalty for DC'ing?

in WvW

Posted by: Kerithlan.1659

Kerithlan.1659

when you DC tooo much you should fix it with your provider not arenanet with you

Your viewpoint is too naive imo. Each death and repair bill cost 1 silver 64 bronze. A single DC server wide will probably affect let say 10,000 players active in combat (assuming each server supporting 25,000 players of which only 10,000 players are in active combat) and chalk up a total repair bill of 164 golds. Taken across a server farm of 30 servers, a data center wide DC will reap Anet a total of 4920 golds. Not a bad commercial initiatives I must say.

Furthermore, if you have played WoW, you would have known that there is an exploit out there that can mass DC player in battleground. I hope that exploit don’t work in GW2, but I am not too sure.

If you think DC is not an issue with Anet or anybody other than your internet service provider, think twice. Don’t be too kitten sure.

You don’t seem to understand, it has already been stated that this change only affects players in World vs World that disconnect while in combat. It doesn’t effect people randomly walking across Gendarran Fields or whatever.

I hate to use this word on people, but alas I had to use it on you again. You are naive to think that it only affect WvW. It may be true for NOW.

If there are a lot of people out there who alt-f4 in PVE and in the process suffers Anet repair bill revenue, you think Anet will not extend this implementation to cover every aspects of the game?

Remember that Anet officially classify WvW as PVE. So now we have double standard in the implementation of PVE zone disconnect and repair bill. Do WvW player deserve less than other GW2 PVE player?

Right, I’m the naive one. I’m not the one crying my eyes out over something that won’t happen.

What the hell is repair bill revenue, by the way? I don’t think you understand how any of this works.

This was the same guy who posted a thread about how someone found a counter to his Alt-F4ing and said everyone who showed a modicum of sportsmanship by not Alt-F4-ing when downed was dumb.

Ignore the troll.

Experimental Teleportation Gun

Posted by: Kerithlan.1659

Kerithlan.1659

Since this item cannot be used in World vs World and is primarily a silly item, would it be possible to modify it/buff it? I think that it’d be fun to see this to become a costume brawl item.

Change the #1 effect to work like a mesmer portal, as in press it once to create an entrance and again to create an exit. Then for the other empty skill slots, add skills that only work against other costume-brawling players, like a knockback or a position swap.

To keep with the spirit of it being a consumable item, give the player a ten minute buff. After the buff expires, the gun explodes and knocks the player down. To limit how much the portal effect can be used, give it 5 charges before the skill deactivates.

I understand that this is a lot for what is essentially a silly item, but I think that some of these PvE-only bundles have potential as costume brawl items (which I’d like to see/have more of).

I feel like everything that could’ve happened in this matchup already has and we just don’t feel like talking about it anymore.

Seriously.

That and conversations that people feel strongly about are a big no no to Anet and WvW hasn’t evolved since launch so, that leaves us numbers.

What is the score for those at work?

and

Does anyone actually like Breakouts? I feel like the NPC cheapens player accomplishments like taking a tower or breaking into a borderland. Maybe I just want my WvW PvP game to be about players, not some meta mechanic that makes me feel helpless / lazy.

Whatever, people on TC know I loathe this Breakout thing.

We had an opportunity to try one of these breakout events earlier today. It didn’t really work, like at all, because people didn’t like standing still next to an npc twiddling thumbs while people showed up. You have to literally stack on top of him for it to count.

Most people just wandered off to attack sentries/dolyaks/camps. I get the feeling that people would rather be proactive than passive when it comes to claiming objectives. The breakout system is incredibly passive, despite what it does and how it works. In my case I just left to do maintenance in the Eternal Battleground after nothing happened for 10 minutes.

From the post below, just reminded me of “roll for initiative”. Kind of an inferior skill in all honesty, but apparently some thieves are using it. So guess the snares part in some cases won’t work as a solution.

To be perfectly honest the only reason why I use Roll for Initiative on my thief is because of the skill’s name/function. It is the ultimate blatant call-out to table top roleplaying games. That makes it instantly superior to every other skill we have access to.

The definition of “in combat” is probably a little vaguer than you guys think. I left the game last night thinking that I wasn’t in combat, but probably due to the culling changes that were recently added that cause enemies to be invisible until it is too late to see them, I woke up dead in Lion’s Arch this morning.

You can tell if you’re in combat or not fairly easily by looking at your utility skills. If you can’t change them, then you’re in combat.

when you DC tooo much you should fix it with your provider not arenanet with you

The other solution is that you stand idle for 10-30 seconds and the enemy kills you anyway.

The time I got DC’d during the WvWvW event was when I was in a safe spot inside a keep while folks were battling it out on the other side of the walls. My character did not die, I just got DC’d from the game.

It only kills you if you’re actively engaged in combat though, so being inside while something else is going on relatively far away from you isn’t really relevant to the change.

A simple solution would be to add diminishing returns on stealth. Thieves are designed to burst and then flee/reset if they fail to kill you. They shouldn’t be in 5-10 minute long wars of attrition, which is what stealth juggling allows them to do.

I’m of the opinion that if you can survive for 60-90 seconds against a thief, then you deserve the win.

STACK ON ME
EVERYONE STACK

MESMER RUN TO GATE AND DROP PORTAL
PRESS F

STACK ON ME
MESMER RUN TO NEXT SPOT

Yeah that really is difficult communication and coordination, isn’t it? This change is fine and actually promotes communication and coordination, rather than just having everyone stand on a badge spamming F.

I am in favor of any change that murders cheese and crutches. This is such a change. Adapt to it and be better for it.

Is there any information on Wintersday skins?

Kerithlan.1659

you don’t like any of the existing hammers? : )) i’m definitely always one for more skins, but there are a bunch out there that are pretty neat i must say.

that being said, i certainly wouldn’t mind seeing a new hammer skin for the holidays! make that all weapons matter of fact.

yeah, well.. with someone buying up all silver doubloons on the TP and ultimately raising their price by over 1000% it’s extremely discouraging for anyone who still wants to go for the juggernaut.
mjolnir and foefire’s power are pretty expensive as well, with 350 and 100 charged lodestones, respectively.

There are anchor skins for hammers. Why would you even think about using anything else? You can hit things in the face with kitten anchors!

I have two anchor skins for my hammers already and I want more.

I thought that Dolyak was lost during the norns’ flight south, and was assumed to have been devoured by Jormag? Ox hasn’t had a havroun for quite some time (and likely won’t again).

Gorillas obviously only exist in Orr and so obviously have been extinct for a while, obviously.

W3 is classified as PvE. Thus, PvE gear is part of the game.

I haven’t found it to be a problem, personally.

To be honest, I’ve been laughed at a lot as soon as someone kills me, from both servers in fact. Earlier I used to bow to corpses regardless of the server, still I’ve been seeing lots of laugh or dance emotes. So I am making sure to laugh at anyone that dies defending something.

Thinking like this is just going to make it worse. I hate the laugh emotes, but it really just makes the person doing it, and the server look bad.

If somone laughs at you, just move on, don’t start laughing at other people. That leads to a whole bunch of people doing childish emotes to spite each other, when it’s really uncalled for.

TC player here. I suck and I am aware of that. Part of it is that my weapons aren’t exotic yet (that is quickly ceasing to be an excuse), part of it is that my computer was built in 2002, and part of it is that I plain suck at 1v1.

I get /laughed at all of the time from FA players and occasionally CD players. However, I also get /bows /cheers /kneels and so on from players on both servers. Both servers have jumped me while I was chasing vistas and both servers have allowed me to gather resources before attacking.

I really don’t care if people /laugh. Let them, it means nothing. It feels good to have someone acknowledge my efforts with a /bow or a /cheer, but at the same time I don’t see how a laugh is insulting.

I like to believe that people that /laugh at me are roleplaying characters that find my character attractive and have to laugh at themselves for their own weak will as they mindlessly follow orders and murder anyone who is representing “the enemy”, all Romeo & Juliet style. I’m on the RP server, it’s better this way.

Well call me old and cynical. I’m calling it here that the parade dolyak is going to die and a massive brawl will happen.

Yes, I have lost faith in the humanity of online FPS and PvP gamers a long time ago. Go ahead… prove me wrong. =)

Calling it here and now, since both CD and YB appear to be on board with this yak march. Fort Aspenwood players are going to kill the yak because of their blind rage toward Yak’s Bend. I’m surprised they don’t camp dolyaks 24/7 just to get another shot at killing a yak.

Well then we’re in luck because YB is in some other kitteny tier and we’ve only gotta get TC involved.

Yeah I wrote that at 3am, I meant CD and TC.

I do hope you’re just being sarcastic there, which I’m fairly sure you are, seeing how nothing says or implies largos can’t be corrupted.

Since the game models comprise the game and thus populate Tyria, the lack of a corrupted largo model means they are immune to corruption. We see Dougal in-game so we know he exists, and we see images of and references to Snaff, so he obviously exists as well.

Should Dyes Be Account bound ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I don’t think so. I think the fact they are tied to a single character keeps the market for rare dyes healthy.

The simple fact of the matter is that this is not a market simulator and that having what you perceive to be a healthy market isn’t exactly good for the game’s health. If you sit in town trading then hey good for you if that’s your thing and all, but for the majority of us we don’t want to deal with kittenty prices that do nothing but line your wallet.

The market should serve to better the masses, not just the market jockeys. Tying dyes up like this only serves the market jockeys.
