Should Dyes Be Account bound ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Kerithlan.1659

I don’t think so. I think the fact they are tied to a single character keeps the market for rare dyes healthy.

Makes it harder to test all the colors for 5 avatars tho. Personally im not as interested in the “rare” colors as much as having a full palette. If you are worried about its price, they can always reduce the drop/quality rate of dyes.

BTW, whats the price of (unidentified) dyes in your server? Tarnished Coast is about 13 silver ea.

The Black Lion is shared by all worlds, not any one in particular.

@Topic: They should not be bound to individual characters (and that wasn’t the original design either, they were originally account unlocks) but then they realized they could monetize the gem store better and make better use of dye booster packs if they split it up. That’s unfortunate because it hurts the players in a senseless way.

I’m not going to sit here and go QQ PLAYERS NEED MORE EASY NAO or anything because I don’t believe in that, but when design decisions negatively impact the quality of life of casual players over something as frivolous as armor color then I feel there’s something worth getting fussed over.

I mean really people this guy has viable gripes. He tells you how he feels and you come back with a childish smart@ss response. If you have noticed there are many others saying the same thing. He may leave then another so on so on. I bet more people are leaving everyday than buying this game.

He has legitimate feedback, but the problem is that these topics always get created because the poster wants to go out with a bang. He says he’s quitting, but he’s going to quietly/secretly continue to lurk the forums (and especially this topic) because he wants people to agree with him.

People make topics like this because they want to find validation for their decision, not because they want to make a statement about the game. If they wanted to make a statement about the game then they’d do so and not bring quitting into it. In the grand scheme of things, this guy leaving is entirely irrelevant.

He’s not being teased for his feedback, but rather for his insecurity and neediness. It’s a form of attention seeking and the internet has never been kind to that. Tip for other people quitting the game: cool story bro, no one actually cares, etc. A dramatic exit is no more effective than a quiet exit. Post your feedback in a constructive way that Arenanet can make use of then be on your way if that’s what you feel you need to do.

If something is changed while its in development, its not a retcon.

Its starting to get annoying how people are beginning to just throw “retcon! retcon!” everywhere. It’s like they don’t even know what the term means anymore.

No way man it is a total retcon. Largos used to be corruptible but now they are not, they’re immune to dragon corruption now. Game model data supports this.

Yes, I have lost faith in the humanity of online FPS and PvP gamers a long time ago. Go ahead… prove me wrong. =)

Calling it here and now, since both CD and YB appear to be on board with this yak march. Fort Aspenwood players are going to kill the yak because of their blind rage toward Yak’s Bend. I’m surprised they don’t camp dolyaks 24/7 just to get another shot at killing a yak.

How to get Exotic Jewelery?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Kerithlan.1659

Kerithlan.1659

To give you an idea, exotic jewelry requires 1 orichalcum setting (two ori ingots), one orichalcum band/chain/hook (2-4 ori ingots, I think), and 5 identical exquisite gems, each of which requires a T6 gem (Orbs), an orichalcum filigree (2 ori ingots), and a glob of ectoplasm. The recipes for Exquisite gems (and the rares you need for 375-400) are available for <800 karma, so It’s not too prohibitive.

The raw materials for each piece of exotic jewelry are as follows:

Exquisite Gems:
1x Orichalcum Filigree (2 Orichalcum Ingots OR 4 Orichalcum Ore)
1x Glob of Ectoplasm
1x Orb (types: Beryl, Coral, Opal, Ruby, Sapphire, Chrysocola, or Emerald)

Earring:
1x Orichalcum Setting (2 Orichalcum Ingots OR 4 Orichalcum Ore)
1x Orichalcum Hook (2 Orichalcum Ingots OR 4 Orichalcum Ore)
5x Exquisite <type> Gem

Ring:
1x Orichalcum Setting (2 Orichalcum Ingots OR 4 Orichalcum Ore)
1x Orichalcum Band (3 Orichalcum Ingots OR 6 Orichalcum Ore)
5x Exquisite <type> Gem

Amulet:
1x Orichalcum Setting (2 Orichalcum Ingots OR 4 Orichalcum Ore)
1x Orichalcum Chain (4 Orichalcum Ingots OR 8 Orichalcum Ore)
5x Exquisite <type> Gem

So let’s say that you want to get full Berserker stat jewelry. You’ll need 2 earrings, 2 rings, and 1 amulet. To create those, you’ll need 128 Orichalcum Ore, 25 Globs of Ectoplasm, and 25 Ruby Orbs.

Each piece of crafted exotic jewelry contains one of the gems used to craft it in its upgrade component slot, so you’ll end up with items such as “Ruby Orichalcum Ring of the Berserker” etc. Hope this helps you plan it out.

Edit:
It’s also worth pointing out that you can upgrade gems into higher ranked gems. Let’s use Rubies as the example again.

Tier 2: 1 Garnet Pebble + 1 Tiger’s Eye Pebble + 1 Pile of Glittering Dust = 1 Carnelian Nugget
Tier 3: 2 Carnelian Nugget + 1 Pile of Shimmering Dust = 1 Carnelian Lump
Tier 4: 2 Carnelian Lump + 1 Pile of Radiant Dust = 1 Ruby Shard
Tier 5: 2 Ruby Shard + 1 Pile of Luminous Dust = 1 Ruby Crystal
Tier 6: 2 Ruby Crystal + 5 Pile of Incandescent Dust = 1 Ruby Orb

The Tier 1 gems are a mixed bag of pebbles that combine together to make the Tier 2 gems, so you’ll have to check the wiki for specifics/others.

If you have the materials I’d be more than happy to craft a few things for you. It’d probably be easier to find a 400 Jeweler on your own server (unless you’re also on Tarnished Coast), but if I understand the mail system correctly then we’re still able to mail things to each other.

If you can’t find any other solutions then feel free to message me in-game and I’ll help you get set up.

I was able to more or less solo this yesterday as a guardian.

I needed help escorting the group through the turret cannon corridor as I was unable to keep things rolling by myself, but after the two of us wiped inside fighting 50 or so mobs (the other player was an engineer and we lasted a solid 10 minutes despite everything) I rallied to the nearby waypoint and took a break.

After that I was able to casually swim through the now-friendly cannons keeping the baddies out, turn in my 20 encryption crystals easily (the golems inside, though hostile, don’t seem to attack you), defeat the monstrosity with the help of the NPCs, and move into the Bauxite waypoint room.

In there all I had to do was keep the NPC in the center alive while swimming laps and hitting power nodes, after which the final golem boss was a piece of cake. It only seemed to use ranged attacks against me and three of the NPCs tanked it/held it in place. With Trident #4 blocking projectiles every 7 seconds on a 16 second cooldown I hardly had to heal. This was the easiest champion creature I’ve ever fought because of that.

The real disappointment was being unable to actually do anything with the lab when it was cleared, because the NPCs promptly blew it up. I didn’t have an opportunity to look around or savor my victory. It was much too linear and sudden of an ending, which ruined the feeling of victory for me.

I enjoy being able to look around at things and to explore, and this event prevented me from doing that. I would not have invested an hour of my time into this had I known that I’d be unable to do anything that I find meaningful with my victory. Jumping through a portal and getting pooped out into the ocean so that I can buy things from a golem isn’t exactly my definition of fun; it’s another item to add to my list of reasons why I don’t find Malchor’s Leap fun.

Score update… TC pulling away at the moment

Just due to the way our servers’ peak hours work out, I would honestly expect something like this to happen every day this week unless we have people dedicating themselves to play more on any given server. CD will beat us in the mornings and we’ll bounce back during the evening. Unless FA or CD can find a way to throw off our peak hour performance, then nothing is going to change.

It’s likely imagined on my part, but it looks as though FA is getting a raw deal out of the current alliance. Is that because things didn’t work out correctly at the start of the week?

Basically what I’m asking is, from the FA perspective, is everything going as planned now that you’ve settled into the alliance phase of things?

There was no alliance at the start of the week. Attempts at one were started Saturday afternoon.. taken a few days to get a majority on board. Like I said in a prev post on this thread, the alliance may not help much this week because it will take awhile to get the word out. But since this matchup will happen again next week it could work out much better then if we can keep it going.

I know there was no alliance at the start of the week. I was referring to you guys allowing TC to get the early lead by focusing on each other while mostly ignoring us for a day or two.

You guys(TC) are upset b/c for the first time in a month you are having to deal with what YB, CD and FA has had to deal with the entire time. We have all had both opposing servers in our backyard for the last 3.5 weeks. Its easy to talk about superior defense when no one is attacking your shizz, not so easy now is it? Get used to it, I’m gunning for you TC. Before you say it, no its not because I want to move up a tier, its b/c of all the mess you have been talking on the forums the past few weeks. Look forward to seeing you and all that superior defense, I imagine I will be wiping that smug smile off the bottom of my boot.

I uh, don’t recall anyone on Tarnished Coast complaining about the current state of affairs. We asked you guys to come attack us and take our stuff. Or have you guys forgotten about last week? We’re still rallying and repelling your attacks during our peak hours. Nothing has changed other than we’re getting more pressure during our down time.

Brainstorm Idea: Commander Ranking System

in WvW

Posted by: Kerithlan.1659

Kerithlan.1659

Nice idea…. didn’t read the whole thread so maybe this was mentioned, but if they gain points for taking something on the map, they should also lose points of failing to defend it.

Sometimes a strategic retreat is better than fighting forever. In every way, this system would serve only to encourage sub-par commanders to continue not learning while causing the better commanders to ignore the system and do their thing.

That’s already mostly the case — bad commanders always want to command regardless of what’s going on or how many badges are on the field; while better commanders know when it’s appropriate to step back. This would just make the first group worse/bigger.

The literal only solution is to play more and gain more experience in regards to who commands on your server and what they’re like. There’s no system that can automate or substitute for experience.

In regards to the elementalists not carrying focuses:

I play a guardian and I have a copy of every weapon in my bag. Not all of them are exotic yet, but they’re all at least level 80 rares. You can’t run with the same 1-4 weapons and neglect your other tools/options. Switching weapons is like switching your utility skills, as half of your skill bar actually is your weapon.

If I’m playing in any group sieging towers/keeps/Stonemist, I make sure to have my scepter available to hit oil drums. If I’m playing defense, then I try to have a shield available to counter shelling from catapults and trebuchets. Being flexible with your weapons is important to every class. I didn’t really believe that until I started carrying things around, and I was shocked at how much I find myself using different tools for different strategies.

This is true for all of Guild Wars 2, not just W3. You’ll simply have a higher quality-of-life with your profession if you carry a toolbox. If elementalists in your group aren’t carrying foci to block trebuchets, then have them buy trash white level 1 foci off of the trading post for 20c just so that they have one. Same thing with guardians and engineers with shields and rangers with offhand axes. There’s a trading post on every WvW map so there’s no excuse not to have one.

I write this as a disgruntled member of Fort Aspenwood and the guild [PRO]:

<snip>

TC player here. I’ve bumped into [PRO] quite a bit over the past few weeks and honestly I feel like you guys are a mixed bag. Half of you are really cool to face off against and are willing to let passives be passives, while some of you guys are relatively tunnel-visioned when it comes to getting kills.

When I come up against you guys, I have one of three experiences. Either I come up against your better, more experienced players and I rightfully get my kitten thrashed; or I come up with your less experienced players and I win soundly; or I come up against someone (or a group) in between and have a great back-and-forth skirmish.

I wrote about this a few days ago. I bumped into 2-3 of you guys while trying to get a vista in your borderland, and I made it a point to /bow and /wave while shrugging off their attacks. After a minute or two of me not going down and not hitting them, someone noticed what was going on and two of you guys disengaged and let me be. The third guy was under level 80 and continued to whale on me for negligible damage — I was only annoyed because he was crippling me and causing me to fall.

I think this is a good thumbnail example of your guild. I was working hard to keep myself up against your level 80 players (and at one point almost downed), but they were polite enough and experienced enough to realize what I was going after. However, your less experienced player would have gotten himself obliterated had I been making a point not to fight back.

I’m not trying to be condescending (because apparently giving constructive feedback and encouragement is such) with this post, but rather trying to share my experience from the other side. If you are serious about getting your guilds to work better in tandem, then take a look at your recruits (or players on troll-alts) first. I have no idea what your guild is like outside of playing against you in WvW, but if you’re not doing it right now a good starting point would be some sort of buddy system or training system where a new player would learn from or apprentice with your better players and commanders.

I really and sincerely want you guys to do well against us, and only part of that can be attributed to your server being a familiar and comforting enemy at this point. I’m only a mediocre player from a small guild — I shouldn’t be able to massacre or potentially massacre players from a guild like [PRO]. It should be the other way around, and I am more than ready to admit to that.

The one non-80 vista example is just the most recent one, not the only one. There has been more than one occasion where I’ve been able to pull [PRO] players away from zergs or away from sieges/strategic locations just by making a big splash and then running away. It’s really funny from my end when that happens and when I kite 2-3 people across the zone, but from a “we want every player and every server to get better” perspective, you need to stamp that out.

Today we’ve taken SMC four times and I’ve personally stayed all four times with dozens of other to sweep it thoroughly. I killed quite a few mesmers but then all four times there was suddenly a TC zerg inside the lord room and a few seconds later SMC was lost.
I also heard multiple reports of mesmers going through walls or under the ground but I was always looking for mesmers on the upper parts of the castle so I never saw anything personally.

I’m not gonna say that TC is full of hackers or exploiters, but considering the size of the zerg which kept suddenly appearing in SMC out of thin air taking advantage of this and considering that they did it four times while I was playing….I’ll just say that TC’s gameplay leaves a lot to be desired.
If this is how they’re planning to win this week’s match then it’s really sad because I know that there are a lot of good players and good commanders in TC who are capable of fighting for the first place without resorting to these “tactics”.

And in case someone from Anet reads this I’d like to request that they have a look at what’s happened today and find a fix for it

You guys didn’t repair your walls for like four hours. You don’t need to exploit to knock down walls that are at 10% with no one watching them for upwards of 45 minutes or to break into a tower/keep/castle that has no supplies stored up.

You had like six holes. It wasn’t exploits, it was just a less-than-stellar maintenance job on the castle. It isn’t hard to hide people inside of something as big as Stonemist when there’s doors as wide as highways.

Hmm but how do u explain that literally 1 minute after we’ve captured SMC a TC zerg appears in the lord room? When SMC changes hands all walls and gates are repaired and 1min is not enough time to treb the walls down

Either you are bad at sweeping for thieves and mesmers (or alternatively we have very good and coordinated thieves and mesmers), or the keep flipped with our forces still inside (which tends to happen fairly often).

My point with the walls was that, if we wanted to, we had plenty of time to saturate the place with portal puppies. You gave us that opportunity and then some.

I logged out of WvW about 3-4 hours ago so I’m not sure what happened or who was commanding, but knowing our server I’m pretty sure we had a few people hiding all over.

The only solution is to find time to play for extended periods during all of your server’s time rotations. Doing that exposes you to all of your commanders and potential commanders, and it provides you with a better feeling for how your server plays and operates.

Just adding a suggestion for you guys to think about, Arenanet:

After a while, servers are going to fall into one of two rhythms without exception. Either they will maintain their place and their presence in their tiers (with little change to the top 5), or players will get burned out and servers will dip down slightly before rebounding.

This is not unhealthy from a mechanical point of view, but it does cause many servers to see too much of each other too often. That can lead to rage and arguments more quickly than it might foster competitive rivalries. We’re seeing that already.

One way to get around this would be to design a season seeding system. Every 6 months, reshuffle W3 matchups based off of seeding, similar to how sports teams get paired up during playoff season. Even though it will more than likely reestablish the status quo on its own within a couple of months, for a while servers will be seeing each other for the first time.

That would give the lower servers an opportunity to observe the tactics of higher ranked servers and possibly improve. It’d give any guilds in the higher servers looking to transfer a better feel for the servers they might transfer to. Most importantly, it’d give people fresh faces to play against for a few weeks and break things up.

This is just a raw idea so it’s going to need work, and I know some people will find it unpopular, but it’s something that I’d like ArenaNet to consider and roll around in their heads. Players I’ve talked with in-game have been worried about W3 stagnating as things become more set-in-stone/rigid, and this would be a way to help prevent that.

My friend did participate in the karka event. He disconnected and was unable to open his chest. He did receive his loot in the mail.

I want to say thank you for not saturating the entire player-base with swag and taking the time to come to a thoughtful conclusion. Players have been whining about the way you handled it already — frankly I don’t see the point. It is not as though you promised anything, or as though the event story wasn’t fun or engaging.

Getting CC-chained by Orr mobs

Speak for yourself i love how tough it is in orr.

It trains you for pvp and makes you better in dungeons.

Learn to use your skills and its a non-issue.

I especially love how my mes (which only recently got its first exotic) is in combat for 20-30 continuous minutes at a time with at least 3 mobs.

They could do something about the continuous burning near the temple of balthazar though.

I’m all for interesting and engaging mechanics that make you a better player. If you think that the Risen fit into that category then you are sadly mistaken.

The majority of players don’t want to fight for 20 minutes against 3 monsters, only to find 1-5 vendor trophies worth 16c each. Even if you do find some T6 dust or a Large Bone, you’re still not in a position where the loot you’ve gathered during those 20 minutes is worth the risk of your repair bill or the value of your time.

You can make more money by jumping into World vs World and killing Rams and Skales. This is a major issue with the design of both Orr and of World vs World. It isn’t healthy, no matter how much you like it.

The problems then, to recap:
- Players are shoehorned into a single form of gameplay, which prevents the enjoyment of approximately a third of all playing styles
- The amount of loot that the player receives is not proportionate to the amount of time spent in combat, partially because build shoehorning tends to remove offensive options in this case
- Chain-control isn’t a challenging or skill-based obstacle to overcome; your profession does all of the work for you by flipping a switch (or not); players want skill challenges, not gimmicks

I don’t think that it’s unfair. I think that it’s annoying and off-putting. These are all skills that player characters have access to, and it’s not really a mix between professions. There’s very few overlap, with most Risen mobs reflecting more or less only one profession’s gimmicks.

The problem is that they’re used too commonly, which limits your play options and shoehorns you into a single style of play. It’s one that can be fun, but for most players it gets really old and stale rapidly. Playing a stability turtle isn’t exactly engaging or thrilling.

Article discusses valid points about guilds

Kerithlan.1659

To be honest, I think this is more of a player issue than a game one.

Yes, the guild design is what enables players to guild hop, but it’s the players themselves causing guilds to “fail.”

For instance: no one uses /g chat anymore, instead using Vent, TS or in my guilds case, Skype. Why chat if you have your main members in a 25 slot vent? This creates an atmosphere of no one talking. After a while, someone sees an ad for HUGE GUILD
and reps them instead, because having that amount of players, people are bound to be G-chatting

The fact the the article concludes with “they need a dungeon finder” which would basically solidify guilds as throw-away if implemented, kind of makes the whole of the article’s complaints moot.

Have you ever tried typing in guild chat while in a battle or doing a dungeon? Obviously not. Cause if you had then you would know why players use ventrilo or some other voice program.

Yes, I have. It’s apparently a rare skill to be able to do that and still play well. Voice programs are lame. I don’t want to listen to a fat guy moaning over his cheetoes about how unfair a boss is because he forgot how to move out of the danger zone (that’s a true story).

On the Sixth Elder Dragon and its corruption

Kerithlan.1659

You seem to misinterpret/misread me.

I said depths or far north. No indication is ever made that the Shiverpeaks continued much further north off of the original Tyria gw1 map. Or anything about what was underground besides dredge. Similarly, “And the Dwarves do mention the Stone Summit living further north (and while in the Northern Shiverpeaks, further south)” while true does not talk about the areas north of the Shiverpeaks – you contradict yourself by saying “while in the Northern Shiverpeaks, further south” – such comments I, at the very least, never recall seeing. But that’s not even relevant to your original post, in which you stated “we heard stories from the dwarves […] of strange creatures living in the mountains far to the north” which isn’t talking about the dwarves living in the far north, nor was I disputing such a non-existent claim.

On the mursaat, you claimed that _"The White Mantle and Shining Blade told us stories of the Mursaat and of the depths of the jungle from whence they came.

All of this (save Orr) showed up in Eye of the North."_ – that is to say, that the depths of the jungle where the mursaat “came from” showed up in Eye of the North. That did not occur (despite popular belief, there is no conclusive evidence to indicate who were the originators of the ruins in the Tarnished Coast).

I was not being pedantic or particular, either, I was merely answering your question: “Would you kindly point out the errors in my post for me (as I am 100% positive that they don’t exist)?” I simply pointed out the errors you made, as you requested it be done by marnick. That is to say, I responded to your question directed at marnick to help avoid the increased hostilities you two were forming so that this thread would not derail more. I had no intention of being hostile nor was I.

- We did see the Mursaat in Eye of the North. One Mursaat. The reason we didn’t see more is because we all but committed genocide at the end of Prophecies when the Door of Komalie opened. We never bump into the Mursaat city that Saul D’Alessio speaks of in Eye of the North, but we do continue their lore. This is something that I said. We bump into a Mursaat in the jungle. You seem to be the one that’s misinterpreting me, as I was referring to the story of the Mursaat, their ties to the jungle, and the jungles of Tyria being odd and weird.

- The dwarves do talk about the Stone Summit having a stranglehold on the mountains. They talk about the Stone Summit enslaving all manner of beasts and creatures. They mention that Stone Summit territory has been growing in all directions. That’s the entire focus of the story after Nolani Academy. That’s why the players have to pick a specific path through the mountains. There’s no contradiction here.

Look we’re going to go back and forth on this and it’s pointless. I’m going to stop myself here. It’s just sad to see you acting this way after seeing you be so upstanding elsewhere.

They do not go through some complex thought process that “Hmm, FA has a better shot a first place, so we better attack their tower on the other side of the map, and leave the Yak’s tower by our keep, alone.” It just doesn’t happen. It is not reality.

Erm, actually… that’s exactly what we were doing. Just today, even. Not that scenario, but that sort of forward-planning. It ended when one server got too greedy, so we had to push them a bit.

Frankly if servers aren’t thinking about where they’re going to be next week or who their most strategic target is long-term then they’re not really going to move anywhere but down.

If that Yak tower in your scenario was posing an immediate threat to our keep then obviously we’d take it and fortify it. However if it was just sitting there and it was strategically advantageous for us to leave it alone for an hour or two then we’d do exactly that. Obviously we’d monitor it, but we’d do exactly that.

That’s how wargaming works.

I am not trying to be insulting here, but if you’re ignoring an undefended tower next to your keep, because of the scoreboard, that is bad strategy.

WvW is simple: Get points for your server.

If you’re ignoring a tower, you’re giving up those points for that hour or two… all because of some overall strategy based on the scoreboard. If you want the scoreboard to go your way, you need to focus on your corner of the map first. If you need to hit supply camps outside of it to draw the enemy forces away… do it… but do not overextend to some random point just because of who holds it.

Adopt that simple strategy on every map, and you’ll do much better. It may seem simplistic, but it is reality.

If you are staring at the leaderboard and scoreboard, and trying to figure out which server to focus on? While you’re focusing on that one server, the other two are going to be attacking whoever is the easiest target. So if you’re completely ignoring one opponent on a map, of course they’re going to beat you. It is just poor strategy. You cannot focus one server in this game and hope to win.

Ironically, TC does not worry about who they’re facing next week. We do not tunnel vision one enemy based on the scoreboard. And we’re not moving down.

I just get tired of hearing about alliances or people focusing specific servers. For 99% of the people out there, it does not happen. There is no ultimate strategy that every guild on each server follows. People go out there, and the kill the enemy.

Honnor: Thanks.

Except that we do in fact do this. All of the time. If Anzalia Pass isn’t a threat to Stonemist Castle right just now, then we’re not going to do anything more than maybe treb it a little. If Blue is giving us problems then we’re going to let Anzalia stew for a bit while we jump on Durios or Quentin instead.

You soften targets up for later while taking what’s important now. That’s sort of the point of long-term planning. You know, to plan long term.

We attack who attacks us first, yes, but we don’t attack blindly and mindlessly. THAT’S bad strategy. There is a difference between choosing an opponent and giving up points. The two are separate things. We can choose our opponent and crush them both too. We just need to ensure that we crush one a little bit more than the other in that case.

You are acting as though all I care about is the scoreboard, and you would be wrong for assuming so. You are assuming that I would rather attack a random target in bumblekitten nowhere for no reason other than its current color, and you would also be wrong. Controlling the map 100% of the time 24/7 is an unreasonable goal — it is tactically and strategically advantageous to allow the enemy to retain objectives sometimes. Don’t be so black and white.

But yes we could argue it out here or we could realize that we’re probably not talking about the same thing. I’m talking about earning points long-term, while you’re talking about earning points immediately. They’re not mutually exclusive. Good talk.

Also: I’m not talking about any alliances, so you can go ahead and lump me right back out of that category, thanks.

Article discusses valid points about guilds

Kerithlan.1659

I run a guild on Tarnished Coast and we’ve been seeing a lot of what was described (and more). My stance during recruitment (before the game launched) was that I would not allow multi-guilding as a general rule. Exceptions could be made on an individual level if it was felt the reason made sense.

This was an extremely unpopular stance prior to launch and I know a lot of people with a similar position saw themselves getting eaten alive in forum rages from players who felt that it was their absolute right to guild surf every night, and that it was up to the guild to earn their participation at every moment.

I can understand, from a players perspective, how intoxicating this new freedom might be considering how many guilds in other games largely held the exact opposite position and really took advantage of (or neglected) players.

But I also knew perfectly well that the opposite extreme was going to be equally as dysfunctional. And as predicted it is. When players can channel surf guilds, they have no reason to invest into a specific one. They literally become consumers of what the guild is offering, like showing up to eat dinner, with zero motivation to help set up before-hand or stick around afterward.

Hi, I’m someone who despises guilds (in any game) that, as a requirement, force me to only be a part of them or to exclusively contribute to them. It’s a problem that I had in Star Trek Online as well as World of Warcraft. My reason isn’t because it’s a breath of fresh air to have a system or whatever else you think. The reason is that it’s an artificial constraint on my account.

In Star Trek Online, most of the fleets use extra chat channels to manage out of character or etc chats. Because of this, one of the prerequisites to joining the majority of the game’s fleets is making an oath that you won’t join any other fleets with any character under any circumstances for as long as you’re with that fleet. In short, they expect you to join with your account rather than with your character.

I find this unacceptable as someone who usually separates my PvP/PvE/RP characters instead of using the same character for everything. If I join a PvP fleet, then I’m unable to have my RP character join a RP fleet. The RP character must remain fleetless or join the PvP guild/alt-guild. I understand why a fleet leader would want to do this (to keep the player-created chat in line, or to prevent spying with enemies), but it still feels unnecessarily restrictive to me.

In World of Warcraft, for a long time I was unable to join any guilds with a strict anti-Horde or anti-Alliance policy. I enjoyed playing both factions and had characters on both sides. Because I played a human alt, for example, I was unable to join a large number of Horde guilds with my Undead main. This prevented me from joining several guilds that I had friends in on both sides of the fence. Eventually changes to the game made this pretty much vanish, but while it lasted it was pretty bad.

In Guild Wars 2 my problem is that I have a small guild filled with my real life friends. There’s about 10 of us (half of which log in once a week), which means that we earn influence slowly. We don’t want to be a competitive or huge guild, but we do need influence to get upgrades like the guild bank or guild armor. I have the same issue as I do in STO where I can’t have my split character archetypes representing proper guilds.

If I decide to join a guild that grinds dungeons all day or that loves wvw or something, I can do that… but the down-side is that these super-huge guilds that have 60-100 people constantly representing earn influence much faster and still demand constant representation. This means that I’m unable to invest in my small guild (which takes way more time to invest in/is in higher demand of influence) while the bigger guild (which is way lower demand of influence) grows fatter. Two points of influence to my small guild is worth way more than two points of influence to a giant.

I understand that every guild has the same desires and demands that my small guild has, but what the big guilds need to understand is that they’re still going to get influence from me when I run dungeons with them or flip camps in wvw. They don’t need me constantly representing them. They just don’t.

The issue with demanding my representation is that I’m unable to properly manage where my influence resources are going. Joining a guild and not representing often might seem fickle to you, but to me (and I am sure a large number of other players) it’s because we recognize that you’re already well-off on resources. I’m more inclined to do something when I don’t have to do it. If my guild is in good shape and none of my friends are online, then if your guild has been good to me I’ll join with you for a while.

@ Kerithan
Pretty much half of the things on EotN that you talked about – there was no mention in-game, ever, of creatures in the depths or the mountains to the far north – we only knew charr came from the north and the tale of the Great Destroyer and Great Dwarf (and of course the Tarnished Coast’s existence). You’re also somewhat wrong on the hints of sea-farers from Factions – it was from Factions but rather An Empire Divided (from the Factions prima guide) and it wasn’t about Mursaat but Margonites. Also, while we’re told the mursaat came from a jungle it’s never said or explained, not even EotN, where that jungle is. It may be the Maguuma, it may be Woodland Cascades, or neither. Though technically that’s just where they were when Saul found them, as they weren’t in Tyria for thousands of years according to Arah explorable.

Margonites was what I meant, that was a simple typo.

I never said anything about things living beneath the mountains to the far north. I said that various NPCs mentioned scary things underground. And the Dwarves do mention the Stone Summit living further north (and while in the Northern Shiverpeaks, further south) than the regions that we discover, and that Iron Horse Mine isn’t where they suddenly stop. It’s just where the player character’s travels take them. I don’t see how any of this is incorrect.

I don’t understand how stating that the Mursaat made first contact with Saul in the depths of the jungle is an incorrect statement. It emphasized the fact that the various woods, jungles and unexplored regions of Tyria are filled with odd and magical entities, and when we visited the Tarnished Coast in Eye of the North we encountered exactly that.

I respect you as someone who knows your stuff and as one of the wiki’s top contributors, but aren’t you being a little bit pedantic/particular here? If you’re just looking to find anything at all wrong then hey yeah you caught a typo, great, but otherwise what’s the point of saying “you’re right, but I’m going to nitpick and pretend you’re not right”?

We’re probably better off with the Guild Wars 1 version of guilds. I’d much rather have alliances (and the ability to represent other guilds within my alliance) as well as an alliance chat than the current system. Both are fine systems that are lacking in certain areas (such as GW1 not allowing you to see online alliance members and GW2 not fostering loyal members), but if we take the best from both we could come up with something stronger and better.

And I am flatly against a dungeon finder. Automatically throwing me into a room with 5 strangers is cold and mechanical. It’s like sorting objects on a factory line. No thanks. I’d rather have a party-find system that’s some sort of mashup between GW1 and Star Trek Online. I want a bulletin board style interface in-game where I can browse guilds and their recruitment ads, where I can browse active parties seeking more, where I can find dungeon groups seeking more, etc. A random dungeon finder is pretty god awful, keep it away.

The fact that their server side code DON’T check for this blatant exploit is very telling… The player is X location… teleport to Y location, and Y location is not a waypoint the server should auto flag the player. Anet can’t ever add simple check system in their code

ArenaNet could easily counter this with an automated system if they wanted to.

Just have each node record a time stamp for when the player last used it, and compare times/distance.

If node A is 5 feet from node B, then the “error” period should be ignored. If node A is 50 feet from node c, then there should be a period of about 5 seconds minimum (this includes the collection time) whereupon a flag is tossed up. Increase the reasonable red-flag grace period depending on the distance. If a user hits two warning flags in a row, then automatically suspend the account and get someone to look into it.

I am normally not a fan of automated systems but in this case there’s really no reason why a player should hit 6 nodes spread out across half of a map in under 20 seconds. Just the collection time alone makes that improbable. An automated system could handle it and would not hurt if left in place after the exploit was patched.
