To the original poster, you wanted to know what was wrong with necro so you got some loaded responses, but at the end of the day its still a viable class. It has a unique flavor and can be played in quite a few ways. You can be quite successful with a power/crit build, since the necro has some tanking built in, and can pretty much go all out power and still take a few hits.
From what I understand its a lot different from the first guild wars, so if you’re looking for the same experience you’re not going to get it.
Also use dodge and shroud form properly.
Yes shroud form will get shredded in 2 attacks, but if you get a fear out of it you can put some distance in. Personally with a power build that means I get a good life transfer and maybe a blast or two, this hurts bad.
With dagger, immobolize and life siphon, the channel works even if they have stealthed. Assuming you can get the immob off before they stealth…
Nothing is a sure win here, just keep applying the pain. You’re right, with a good thief its a very short battle you have to keep throwing them off because the second they get the upper hand you’re dead. So use your dodges and cc liberally, your health/armor isnt going to keep you alive.
You have to take any advice on here with a grain of salt. There is a very wide range of skill levels with thieves, and people who have zero problems probably havent encountered the better ones. I personally have fought thieves where I am like “wtf they dead already?” and those kitten culling ones where i can barely touch them because I cant target them and they dodge out of wells etc invis all the time (this is coming to an end March 26 hehe).
Wait it out till the culling nerf, many thieves will quit after they see their “mad skills” evaporate. You can always travel in zerg formation until then.
Make sure your equipment is all exotic. Soldiers should work fine for armor but you need some dps too, I go berserker on the accessories and it seems a good mix.
Also good to have is well of suffering, if they are full berserker they will not like it. Plague form (blind) is also great if you are outmatched and want to drag it out or get to safety. It will burn out their initiative and they will have to rely on normal attacks.
I only worry when I get 2 or more on me, even the good kind.
I think arena net has more on its plate than answering someones request for specific fluff material. Personally I think this would go more along the line of a class specific emote, ie for mesmers you’d get a clone that did clown tricks or some such.
Not sure, but happy with it either way. Probably not intended to be this way. Not the most pressing issue however.
If they are unique he shouldn’t have been able to buy 2 to begin with imo. I figured it out from reading first, but it could be confusing. If they dont follow their own rules allowing you to buy two, why shouldnt you be allowed to wear them.
Also, why are ascended rings a waste of laurels? What else is so great to spend them on. The stats add a few points to any build.
Necro is my 3rd 80, not sure if I’m seeing more or noticing them more because I am playing one. Glad I finally got to it, its what I intended to play from the beginning, but got swayed by the other “flashier” scholar profs.
I’ve taken it a few times but the effects are so minimal its a waste of spot. I dont use spectral wall however. Should really increase the non-spectral effects to make it worth it, like:
grasp – beam instead of projectile,
walk – swiftness 36sec
armor – protection 12 sec
wall – probably ok already
Between 1 transfer per enemy and misses etc, I find this too unreliable to use. Focus is way superior imo.
Totally looking forward to this. I’m sure the good thieves will do fine, providing they didnt think stealthing constantly actually made them good and used other tactics!!
I’m more looking forward to the zerg vs zerg fights however. Prolly be laggy as hell till you set up right but I will definately like it when I stop getting gang kitten by unknown invaders that dont bother even resolving until I am looking at my body from above.

It doesn’t, though. With a sales (and listing) tax, it is harder to make a profit by just trading, and it is riskier to try and manipulate a market. Each cycle of buy-then-sell has to make over 15% instead of 0% (no tax) in order to profit. The added cost of each transaction chokes down pure trading, and discourages it in favor of other activities, like farming. Prices have to make a 15% swing before you see a profit from pure trading now. If it were 1%, there would be a much higher volume of trading (and the T kitten low enough as it is).
Figure out your profit margin and price accordingly. If you include the tax in your calculation its the consumer (buyer) that pays it. You set your price, not the game.
If you didnt have to account for tax all prices would be lower and profit would be the same because everyone would stop factoring tax in so no difference to the crafter, at least until inflation starts marching them all upward because gold keeps being produced and not destroyed.
Be nice if “spectral attunement” did more with this too. Its pretty underwelming for a 2nd tier trait.
Just another way spectral walk rocks my world. I’ve tried to remove it from my skill bar but its too much a part of the class.
It really should all even out in the end. With higher taxes, people should charge more on tp to make up the difference. It should only throttle the economy with regards to farming, which is fixed value. Other than that its just a bad math tax, screw up your profit margin and the tax will take your profit. :p
Also the comments regarding listing tax keeping things more stable.

I pretty much always combo a boon strip from spinal shivers (dagger #5) before grasping, gives you a better chance at working. Corrupt boon before is best of course.
Yep probably environmental weapon, theres at least one two rifles (sniper and that grenade launcher thing on the ice elementals) I can think of offhand and sure theres more. Not sure what charzooka looks like too.
We have a few roles, but AOE big guns is where its at, whether its condition or power based. Secondary is crowd control. We sacrifice special movement spikes to be in control of our environment more.
Attrition is just one direction you can go with necro imo, but you lose damage. So thats just one option, or anywhere in the middle. Its definately a feature to have the choice.

I agree with most of this! Spectral walk and spectral grasp are 2 skills I have tried to take off my skill bar but find I cannot live without.
After playing an elementalist and having the same thing but with stability instead of LF regen, just seems like half a skill. Like it in last gasp however,, works well with plague if I am doing some zerg tanking.
They should put in an option so you can select what daily you do… wait..!

I’m thinking that would be 4 x zero which would be ok. In other words, it seems to me all condition damage is on hold while you are in shroud. Whenever I’m in dire straits and switch to shroud I dont see any additional tics coming off my shroud LF.
You cant heal in shroud but it seems you dont take damage either, ie all things that affect health are locked out.
Sorry if I’m starting rumors here, this is only casual observation, havent really tested.
I’ve forced stability into my build because of this heh. Nothing worse than getting ready to let loose with the big guns and getting knocked all over the place. Just wish they would up it (foot in the grave) to 4 or 5 seconds, 3sec is just a bit stingy.
I use staff without greater marks, its ok, just land it on people and no one will notice
Also shroud is a great tool for avoiding condition damage but that might only apply to poison and bleeds.
I’m not into dueling but I 1-1 ok when it comes up. First thing I think of though, is why not use staff. Staff #4 is great at handling conditions, guaranteed he ends up the worse in that deal. Anyway, good luck!

1.) Warhorn is amazing and already used by most good Necros… it’s called perma-swiftness lol.
2.) Spectral Wall is working as intended and needs no duration increase (look at your traits and test things…)
3.) Corrupt Boon is already amazing
4.) Spectral Grasp already had a silent fix/buff with the LOS issues previously this last patch.
I’ve recently taken up warhorn over focus to clear up another utility spot (remove spectral walk) so I concur with this.
I wouldnt call it perma-swiftness but its enough if you’re with a zerg to get through the slow spots.
AOE fear on downed might be kind of cool, been meaning to try it out. Is it 1 second fear the same as other necro fears?
Just a quick mention about well of suffering, its more power build imo. I looked in my combat logs last night and noticed an enemy WoS ticking on me for 200 a shot lol. Probably not a good idea for a conditionmancer.
Actually it’s because of the latest patch.. since wold events drop rares almost 100% of the time and lots of players are abusing it(by guesting), this is flooding the market causing rares & ecto’s prices to crash making people not want to spend their money while prices adjust
ectos were 38s, less than 1 month later they are 27s.. lots of people lost money and are gonna wait for prices to normalize, go back up

Anyone know whats going on?? Up until a couple days ago I did pretty brisk business in weaponsmithing. Its been a standstill and everyones dropping their prices to try and get some sales but no bites.

The danger with buffing if the class doesnt need it means the class becomes flavor of the month, and then its under constant fire for nerfs. Rather not see that. Some fixes are needed to stuff that obviously doesnt work right but its a solid class overall. If you dont like it play something else is the best advice.
spiteful talisman does increase the range to 1200. I have tested this extensively in pvp and wvw
Only on focus #5. Spiteful Talisman (II) basically works entirely for #5, while leaving the range and cooldown unaffected on focus #4. Thats generally ok for me since its the main feature to get ranged on, but if it takes away the patch buffs (as mentioned in a post above) that would stink.
I was just going to report this also. Spiteful talisman really needs a look at.
Other classes have different strengths. We are very durable (highest base health, shroud form, great elites) instead of mobile. As for boon stacking, youre right there, but look at what we do to people that boon stack (evil grin). It makes us more of an anti-hero than a hero, but either way works if you get the win in the end right? We are capable of great dps and can we practically puke long duration conditions on anyone that comes near (except burning) easy. Other classes dont do that, play it for what it is.
Nice stats, I figure you’re doing about 55% more dps than I am in mostly knights gear. Makes a person think… just so glass though.
Sometimes the best defense is offense. The faster you kill something, the less damage they will be doing to you.

+1 Great axe, for a good beheading executioner style, complete with cleave. Could get real scythe but who else would use? All weapons are used by more than one class, and I could see great axe with a ranger or warrior.
Nice, I’ve been trying to get well of suffering in my build for a while, may just have to drop corrupt boon. Terror I find decent but I’d have to re-arrange my spec too much for what I would get.
DS was our downed state and now we have it as a class mechanic with a ui that doesnt show boons and conditions and in which the moment you hit #4 someone tosses a hard cc on you and you lose a huge ammount of dmg and time.
And then we reach mm builds and the recent buff,which by all means was welcomed but when a mesmer can insta kill all your minions and shut you down as well by forcing a transform on you with the press of a button it also shows how halfkittened that was.
Downed state on pvp?you are lucky if you manage to throw #3 before you get stability/stealth stomped.
I generally like the class but I have to hand it to you on these points, some future tweaking could be used. I still dont understand why they removed stability in shroud form during beta, it seems like it belonged. I rearranged a bit so I could get foot in the grave back in my spec since it was too discouraging to shroud just to get knocked down, since imo its supposed to be our ace up our sleeve.
Still feel its a great class, but there are a few annoying parts that could use some polishing I concur.
I dont know about condition build, but power build is really good. I think we make the best range nuker in the game, even better than elementalists, since they have to worry about cooldowns and people just leaving the aoe radius. We also come tankier to take range damage better. Combine that with some of the best range cc going, there is strong synergy imo. Its not a insta-win class by any means, but there is a place for us.
It was pretty cool to do aoe chills in shroud; I agree it bites, but it didnt really seem intended. Not totally surprised. Glad I didnt get too attached to it.
Pretty sure they do the procs on crit though?
Sometimes I’m scratching my head as to why it didnt land, but in fast paced wvw I probably missed something. I’m suspecting a bug, but could be wrong. :/
I agree, axe is definately for group situations (or MM same thing lol). I tried it out again last night and the comparison between dagger and axe damage is laughable. Dagger #1 evaporates health bars, its extremely strong dps when you bring it to bear. We have other range options, so axe really doesnt fill in any gaps. The vulnerability debuffs makes axe #2 hit harder but its a whole other magnitude less than dagger #1 still.
Winning too easy is boring anyway… I joined JQ months ago when it was struggling to keep t1, that was more fun. I dont get why people just have to win without the challenge. I appreciate the guilds that made the effort to recruit for other time zones, since its annoying losing everything immediately when you log out, but aside from that I dont get team stacking.
And as far as dodging ride the lightning, be aware that RTL doesn’t actually do the stun, and they can just wait a second after RTL and THEN cast updraft. Smart eles don’t always blow the stun after RTL if they know you have the timing down.
Usually you can dodge both. RTL packs a punch by itself, and 9/10 of ele’s will just automatically hammer updraft as RTL ends, not expecting the dodge. I know I never did in wvwvw, and never had to either. Bad players make you lazy. 
I’m still liking the idea of “phasing” of the thief, kind of like Dodge… but not Dodge.
I would like to add a suggestion of seeing damage output pop up when you hit them in stealth, so you have some sort of feedback. Ofc leave the condition damage out because that would let them know their exact location and defeat the purpose of stealth. But having some sort of feedback is good.
Yea makes sense, I mean you would know if you hit something right? I really dont like the lack of any feedback either, makes it seem very futile.
I tested it the range increase works but only on #5!!! Not worth the trait slot, I agree.
Spvp is misleading as you can get all skill levels in there, probably met some people that just started a class themselves, as the auto join takes skill level into account. Its a good class but I doubt you’ll pwnface against people that know what they are doing at level 7 heh.
That said it is a pretty tanky class, so its going to be better than most at low skill levels I would think. If it came down to pew-pewing between an ele, mesmer and necro I think necro would definately win.
