You cannot reward the matchup winner unless the matchup is equal. The upcoming scoring changes will help a little, but won’t change the population imbalances. The team with double the number of players than other teams will always win the matchup.

How about implementing a queue to balance populations by time brackets? You join a server with a prime time closest to your play time. Queues are set to never allow a server to outnumber the lowest populated server in the match by 10% at any given time.

Give players information stats on play periods (ie full, medium, low) for each time period on servers so they can make a decision before joining.

Give one free transfer per player. Rank guilds by number of players and play time. Allow only so many guilds to transfer based on guild ranking per time slot. Allow guilds to move to selected servers first then base population ratings on that.

Server stacking is the main problem this game is facing and I think working out this will provide the most benefit for all players.

If this can be achieved then :
a) match variety will increase.
b) more competitive matches will occur.
c) player participation will increase because of the above.

The population balance is the most influential and the most complex issue in WvW. It is not something you can easily try out and roll back while the development focus is on Scoring changes. Read through first dozen suggestions to fix the issue on this forum and you start to get a feel of the scope.

Adding hard queue limits have been suggested before.

Defeated enemies can be captured for galley oarsmen and have to be rescued by their team mates.

Any loot picked by the ship is placed not in players’ inventory but into a treasure chest carried by the ship. Loot is shared at the end of the matchup unless the treasure is stolen.

  • Showing proper linked world names for player name tags, for example for Darkhaven and Ehmry, instead of only showing Darkhaven tags, it would show both to allies and enemies.

Showing actual world name for allies would make it difficult to communicate and accept them as equal partners. I assume you would still show allied character names in the chat.

Showing actual world names for enemies could be confusing: you’d be constantly guessing whether you are in a 2-way or a 3-way fight.

In-game voice chat needs a lot of development while there are perfectly good voice applications out there. A TS plugin which uses GW2 API to grant access would be a lot less development.

imagine they are forced (built in) to interact, listen, learn from other WvWers, would that development bear its fruit of accomplishment for them and or us?

external app voice comm is ok for a scheduled event(WvW) like time based, but this one is a 24/7 mode

i myself dont use TS, Vent, or even yahoo messager that much cuz those voice apps are boring, while commanding i use camfrog instead, but then again nobody follows me when they install it, cuz they prefer camfrog instead of WvW specially when they hear the words “all eyes”

The word forced has a bad ring to it. Commanders telling people to go TS with a whiny undertone rather distance players from using it. Show example, show benefits and players will be more inclined to listen. For example move all TS users in a different sub squad and players will see that sub squad surviving while others die a lot.

Yes, in-game voice chat would attract more players to listen in – even if the voice was off by default in game options. Some would find it useful and become permanent users.

I still assume the development effort is too much for the benefits.

(quick question) Do we get 2 points per stomp atm? Just looking for clarification. Or does it matter if you stomp or not. I’m an oldie who was used to the cap bloodlust, and stomp – and still accustomed to playing that way … but not sure if they changed that since I returned. Do kills also count when a player is degenerated without a stomp?

You will earn 2 points when you kill an enemy or take part in killing an enemy. Go fire a cannon at two enemy zergs fighting each other and you improve your server’s K/D rating and war score a lot. :P

If your server also has the Borderland Bloodlust you can earn more 1 point by stomping the enemy.

It’s time to go the 3 faction linking model with like 3 EB, 3 alpine and 3 dbl in play, or something, so you can realistically house the playerbase.

You would have 10 EB maps and 30 BL maps in the matchup? That’s how many maps are housing the 6 EU and 4 NA matchups now.

Even with a split between EU/NA I don’t see how that would work out.

It does not matter if a burst skill hits or not. Warrior gets the healing either way.

Using burst skills now causes adrenaline to be spent even if the skill fails to hit.

Few items that would not require that much coding. We can vote for these if the alternative would be to vote on more siege or clunky game mechanics. I’d still prefer not to vote at all if there isn’t anything worthwhile to vote on.

  • Let Tyler Bearce compose a forum post describing how to address the population issue (I really enjoyed the Let’s Talk Scoring… post)
  • Revert Lions Arch back to server instanced map
  • Extend /t across all WvW maps and as read-only to Lions Arch
  • Move all gathering nodes from WvW maps into Lions Arch WvW district (gatherable when your server holds the corresponding objectives)
  • Reset WvW ranks and disable WXP in EotM
  • Make WvW Abilities baseline for all players
  • Remove the roaming Centaurs and Skritts from ABL maps
  • Display rating, rating delta and warscore treshold for no rating change
  • Display warscore breakdown (player kills, bloodlust, sentry kills, dolyak kills, dolyak deliveries, objectives)
  • Display seconds and deciseconds in Combat Log timestamps
  • Assign team colors randomly within a matchup (as opposed to assign them by ratings)
  • Improve the Superior Flame Ram animation (rubberband chains and impact timing)

I know you are just throwing out an idea but there are some details you need to consider first.

For example: The enemy team builds a ram at your tower’s gate. If the ram was neutral you would not be able to damage nor disable it. You could try to jump down and use it before the enemies but it would not end well for you.

That issue has been in the game since the very beginning.

There was a time about 2 years back when ANet was asking players to report exact locations where pathing didn’t work as expected. That effort died out soon with not much results. Few places were changed to un-teleportable. Now some of these fixes are undone again.

For example in ABL hills mesmers can Blink from south gate stairs up to the edge near the supply depot above. But only if the keep has upgraded walls.

For example the ABL south-west supply camp wall was made un-Blinkable but now mesmers can Blink onto the wall again.

The issue was addressed, but it was never solved properly. Pathing algorithms are difficult.

This is an unneeded micromanagement feature. Please keep the essential WvW mechanics simple and let players focus on fighting instead.

You sort of contradict yourself there. On one hand you argue blobs shouldn’t get the wall down using repair hammers and on the other hand you argue that you want fights.

You can only choose one. Do you want to turtle or do you want to fight?

I guarantee you there won’t be any fight happening if the wall stays up, everyone will stay inside and try to pummel the blob with siege.

Having said all that, I voted no only because I think defenders need some counter play, if they suicide run a treb then I think they deserve not to have that damage instantly repaired. I play on JQ so at the moment I am always on the blobby side (at the moment) and I think repair hammers would be OP.

The Repair Hammers allow attacking blob to ignore defensive siege and early scouts. The attackers get to kill the lord before defenders can rally enough players for the objective. Less fighting, more PvE.

Without Repair Hammers the attackers face a risk is losing their rams/catapults to early scouts. Therefore attackers have to spend some time clearing defensive siege or they may have to start the attack over again. This extra time is invaluable for the defenders.

Well, I think it depend on how the hammer will actually work. Anyone who did pve saw different repair hammer situations.
On Tequatl for exemple, you need to keep bashing you hammer like mad to make the health of the turrets go up (that would problably mean that 10 supplies would repair only 1/5 of a Superior Arrow Cart for exemple) and I don’t think this model would cause a great impact. It would help keep some of the siege that are measily at the edge of a large AoE (looking at you Meteor Shower) but surely wouldn’t save siege that are on the full range of these skills.
However in the Silverwastes you have the imba hammer that touch siege weapon and heal it to full instantly. That one I agree with you that would be cancerous af and would complete negate the effect of counter siege as people would just sit with their hammer by the catas/rams waiting to repair it.
I’m neutral in that one but I could vote somenthing if they actually explained how it will work.

Oh this feature is coming from PvE. No wonder it doesn’t seem to fit WvW.

Security! Please escort these PvE designers back into their own department. And do not let them touch anything on their way out.

Repair Hammers would lead to supply trolls, bad siege tactics, encouraging blobs, making life harder for scouts, micro management, consuming extra inventory slot and all horrible things you can imagine.

Better solution for low health hanging cannons is to let them regenerate:

  • Oil, cannons and mortars slowly regenerate while objective is not contested
    • Rate is 1% every 6 seconds, or from 1% to 100% in 10 minutes
    • Supplies are not consumed by the regeneration
    • Fully destroyed siege will not regenerate but has to be rebuilt
  • Oil, cannons or mortar taking damage contests an objective

Other siege, especially golems, shall not regenerate for obvious reasons. I would even argue against refreshing, but that’s another topic.

Vote no on Repair Hammers. Demand better features instead.

I only see these being used after u have defended your keep/ tower to repair damaged siege after getting the walls up. Is this only for cannons/mortars ? Or would this work on catas & ballis too?

Attacking blobs can keep their badly placed siege alive and negate early scouts’ defensive response by healing up the damage. This feature would promote bad tactics, ignoring defensive siege and rolling up big blobs be able to heal up.

Standing on a wall in WvW

Recently (a month ago roughly) I got a new computer capable of supporting recording software so I’ve been playing around with it a bit.

While our Bay was being attacked today, I managed to capture a good example of what standing on a wall in WvW is like while it’s being attacked.

The video should speak for itself if you’ve ever worked defense against a large number of players. Basically, if you try to stop the attackers you’ll be obliterated by AOE’s and CC’s.

I have seen people discuss this various times in the past so I thought I would give a visual idea of how bad it can be at times by provoking the attackers to drop a bunch of AOE’s.

I watched the video and it left me wondering: What were you trying to accomplish up there? I mean defense wise. Destroy the catapults with a Barrage?

Nothing. I believe I stated so at least a few times in this thread. I was provoking them to attack me to show how ridiculous the AOE spam on walls can be. Had I tried to stop them by standing on the lip of the wall, I’d have died within seconds and the video would have been very short.

Think of it as someone sticking their hand in a crocodiles mouth to show how quickly it can snap it’s mouth shut. The person isn’t trying to stop the crocodile from biting, they’re just showing how deadly they are because of how lighting quick they are. Same thing here. I’m just showing that walls will be painted red when they’re being attacked and it’s a deadly place to be even though it shouldn’t be.

I understand that some folks don’t see the point of this video but those that do understand know exactly what they’re seeing.

Perhaps the next video I make I’ll be less vague about it’s purpose, lol.

It is just I so often find players doing exactly that when our objectives are under attack. Standing on the wall doing nothing. I thought it could be some ranger trick I didn’t know about.

Matchup system is a joke

I don’t think you should blame the matchup system for the perceived imbalance. Would you rather fight T3 or higher servers?

Much of the outnumbered feeling comes from the fact the enemies avoid each other. There is very little happening on in the GH or AM borderlands. The focus is in our corner only.

GH seems to have given up winning the matchup and only tries to secure the second place. It is the score/rewards/Glicko system to blame that this is a valid strategy.

All WvW needs is for ANet to throw in a multi-season WvW season event for a WvW Legendary Back Piece. If you was to go into the actually PvP lobby and ask if PvP any and why they are pvping. They follow with.
A.) No PvP is the crap storm of lop sided matchups between teams with junior highschool players going against players that are in the NFL league tier. 9 out of 10 matches.

B.) I’m only here for the back piece and will never return to this crap ever again.

So many PvE players trolling pvper in ranked because their feel entitled to get the back piece by having actually PvP players carrying them to the Back Piece.

So I really think if ANet was to make a Legendary Back Piece for WvW the PvEers and some of the EotM players will come to WvW in droves to try and get it.

No. We had a similar thing already. The world completion required players to visit all the WvW maps.

The response was exactly the same when I escorted some through the maps.
A) “I hate this. Why do I have to play something I don’t like?”
B) Those players never played any WvW other than that walk about.

ANet ended up removing the WvW maps requirement from the world completion.

A lot of the problem is the population that isn’t balanced between the three servers in almost all the match-ups. Commanders that are continually faced with overly populated server time zones can only back cap and not engage. Most new commanders give up because they can’t do anything and get blobbed down.

I mentioned Map Queues based on average “currently logged in” population in another thread. It would force a balance between the 3 servers.

It would help with the following that was mentioned below. Can’t blob down nor karma train if you can’t out number the opponent by vast amounts.

Upgraded Objectives Higher Score – wouldn’t have the number advantage.
Points for Capture – wouldn’t be able to blob karma train

You have identified the problem right, but the offered solution is too simple.

Imagine a player seeing the following message: “Your server has exceeded this hour’s player quota and you will be shortly taken out of WvW”. And then the poor guy is put in queue with no indication when he might get back in.

If he was a Baruch Bay night team player the queue could last for 12 hours. Since that is the only ES speaking server he has nowhere to transfer to in hopes for shorter queues.

But all that was discussed in that thread. Implementing everything on the list without considering the negative effects would destroy WvW as we know it.

WvW as we know it isn’t doing so well right now as far as I can tell… destroying and rebuilding it sounds almost enticing. There is two sides to every coin, you say PvE has the best rewards… yes that is true, unfortunately a Skritt is very close analog to your typical MMO player.

I am only saying there are probably plenty of people who wouldn’t mind getting involved in WvW if it was perceived as being worth the time invested. As for karma train argument, it is upto the mechanics to not let players abuse the mechanics like that if that indeed is not considered the intended gameplay.

WvW is in better shape than it was a year ago. All the changes this year, that Tyler’s thread, polls, make me hopeful for WvW’s future. The biggest threat is taking the game mode in wrong direction (polls can be misleading) while CU and Crowfall are coming up.

Maybe you are right. Maybe the PvE players would be nice cannon fodder to populate WvW. The developers have to somehow outsmart the gold/time savvy players.

That is a rather cynical way of thinking… even if you are right that doesn’t change the fact that you are basically saying no to better rewards, because it might bring in new players, which is totally idiotic.

The fact remains that server pride is pointless… there is no reason to try and win a matchup as a whole. Sure, you can enjoy the gameplay and even get something out of winning individual skirmishes and battles, but there is literally nothing that drives you to win a matchup. There is simply no personal or server wide incentives in place that make the win matter whatsoever.

Improved rewards can be seen as a means to incentivize people to get out of their comfort zone, what happens after that is irrelevant to the rewards. At that point is up to the game play to be engaging enough to make people to want to stick around.

Cynical, yeah maybe. But have you ever seen new PvE content released without the best rewards in the game?

If WvW had the best rewards those PvE players would swarm in and turn WvW into a gold farming tool. Rewarding defense has already been proven impossible, so only offense would get the rewards (Points Per Capture). WvW would turn into EotM k-trains.

But all that was discussed in that thread. Implementing everything on the list without considering the negative effects would destroy WvW as we know it.

Not saying I entirely disagree with this, to be frank most of the concerns you listed are entirely valid (as is the possibility of server stacking for rewards), however, you are assuming an influx of PvE players would be bad enough to think of it as a reason to not improve WvW rewards.

Sure, it might have some adverse effect for a time, but considering how badly we need people I don’t think getting new people in there for any reason is inherently bad idea. It is only potentially problematic if none of those players have any intention of actually playing WvW ever which I find highly unlikely… some people just need reasons to play that are not as abstract as the reasons WvW offers right now. Currently there is literally no reason to attempt to win matchups other than server ranking and “pride” after all.

The PvE players play the best gold/time ratio in the game. They are very savvy in that regard. PvE players do not play for server pride nor server ranking. They play for personal wealth.

They should just remove eotm because it literally has no purpose anymore the one purpose it had was which faster level up but that doesn’t happened anymore.

I think they should keep it to keep the ktrain over there instead of bringing it to WvW.

There are a lot of players in EoTM who don’t even know what WvW and can get hooked to WvW

EotM was supposed to be a place to pass your time while waiting in queue,assuming there would be a queue in all borderlands and EB.
At least that’s how I remember it was introduced to us.

Indeed. Originally it was a waiting area while in queue and a testing ground for new WvW features.

EotM then evolved into its own kind of game mode and could not serve as testing ground nor a place where WvW’ers would feel comfortable to pass time.

The downfall was too high rewards for the effort. Pity EotM also yields WXP rendering WvW ranks worthless.

Was it some SFR WvW guild that went into EotM to decimate the sheepish k-trains? I guess it was a good laugh to kill entire blob in a single push. As result the opposite teams tried first to avoid the guild group and then just quit playing the map until next reset. Just shows how different the game modes are.

I don’t think WvW could ever cater for the EotM type players without turning into EotM like game mode itself.

Yes, I hope they hurry up with the scoring changes. Especially skirmishes. I think that will revitalize WvW as much or more than any of the recent changes. And with skirmishes you probably don’t even need all those other scoring changes.

And I don’t think skirmishes were controversial. The controversial part was the timezone scoring difference.

OK, maybe not explicitly noted as controversial.

Just saying those things we have yet to see have potential for a significant negative impact. That post is their roadmap and we can expect to see those remaining items in the upcoming patches. The negative potential calls for longer testing and possibly many iterations before release.

For example Skirmishes add to complexity. Even now majority of WvW players cannot tell if their server is losing or gaining ranking in the matchup or how much warscore is needed for that.

If you look at the recent release notes you see some of those changes are already in the game.

Many of those remaining items were controversial.

  • Skirmishes would make the already complex system even more complex
  • Last Stand diminishes the early matchup war efforts
  • Upgraded Objectives Higher Score benefits the blob tactics
  • Points for Capture could lead to EotM like karma-training
  • Rewards could promote server stacking and influx of PvE players

There was a poll asking players whether we want to revamp the scoring system or get QoL improvements . We wanted the scoring system and there was a long discussion over the content. We already have some of that content in place.

The reward track feature was an odd one. I find it a totally useless thing – just extra backpack management opening boxes, salvaging blues and greens and then selling everything using the horrible TP UI.

Things you listed as broken fall somewhere in QoL/bug fix department. Which we did not want.

  1. Map completition requirement would draw in players who do not want to play WvW. It is better to let them not appreciate WvW in some place that does not add to queues.
  2. Creating a trailer consumes lot of resources without improving the game mode.
  3. WvW seasons… But what happens between the seasons?
  4. More achievements when the current ones are largely ignored? I cannot think of anyone who plays WvW because of the achievements. The titles earned are not even visible in WvW.

How about:

  1. Make Lion’s Arch map server instanced again.
  2. Create in-game viewable matchup leaderboards for myriad of wvw specific activities. Track them for servers, guilds and individual players.
  3. Devote a district in Lion’s Arch to present the best guild/player of the leaderboards. Guild banners. Statue for the best player.
  4. Extend /t chat across all WvW maps and read-only in that one district in Lion’s Arch.
  5. Remove WvW abilities. Make them all baseline.
  6. Reset WvW ranks and remove WXP from EotM.
  7. Create skins accessible by WvW ranks only.
  8. Give players full access to all gear/consumables/sigils/runes and level 80 trait/skills/stats when entering WvW.
  9. Make objective improvements and tactics and guild war room upgrades only cost materials gained from WvW.

Lo and behold the game mode advertises itself!

tbh just drop a stralth trap on your feet and wait. everytime someone does that to me i feel so useless with 30 sec of ‘revealed’

Pro-tip: when you see someone standing on Stealth Disruptor just walk away. The how-stupid-is-this factor sinks in after 10 mins for most players.

Supply Cap Issue

Okay so here is a screenshot of what the two upgrades are showing today. Both give +5 atm but I am only getting up to 20 supplies.

I thought these stacked.

You have the guild aura and upgrade on your screenshots. Do you also have the Supply Capacity WvW ability maxed out?

You are not crazy. I have the same bug myself now.

When the keep has guild objective aura VII or lower then you can only pick up 20 supplies. When the keep has guild objective aura VIII (magic find +20%) then you can pick up full 25 supplies.

Apparently this recent change to guild auras was not reflected on the Presence of the Keep improvement.

  • The Max Supply +5 upgrade is now the first Guild Objective Aura upgrade guilds unlock.

It’s been there since before that, probably hot launch.

I think you are mistaking this with another similar bug:

Sometimes the guild objective aura or the Presence of the Keep does not get applied to you when you enter a keep. You will notice this by missing icons on your boon bar.

This bug was introduced in HoT. It has occurred both in DBL and ABL. For me it often happened when entering the Ramparts using the north side portals.

Players would find such messages disruptive. I, for one, would hate if I was ever called to teleport to PvE.

Isn’t it teleported from PVE to WvW?
I have to say I agree with that it would be disruptive. I getting invited to a squad over and over(was in a WvW guild at one point.) When I was clearly doing something else. Once was queing for PvP, the other time was doing Tequatl.
On the guild panel he could clearly see I was in HotM and then Sparkfly Fen during Teq spawn time. Even said “Doing Teq justnow, will join after.” He wrote back, “We need you now.”

Yes. Teleport to WvW was the OP’s suggestion. But since I only play WvW, I started thinking how I would feel about being told to teleport into some other game mode.

1. WvW should’ve been main endgame and most lucrative way to spend time in game.
2. WvW and PVE should be tightly connected. For example if situation on BLs and EB is bad for your server, you get major debuff in PvE like penalties to gold gain, magic find, higher WP costs, higher TP fees etc.
3. Claiming an objective for a guild should be a HUGE deal for all of its members.
4. Staying inside and defending a claimed objective should give rewards with very high gold/hour rate.
5. Commanders should have ability to initiate “Call of the Mists” (on a huge cooldown and maybe some token requirements) – A message that pops up for all players on the server, that invites them to be teleported to BL or EB, and if player agrees, gives a buff similar to Volunteer’s Blessing.

  1. If WvW offered the best gold/hour ratio, all those farmer-gathering type players would abandon PvE. WvW would turn into EotM or worse.
  2. There would be no PvE after the first point.
  3. If claiming an objective was a huge thing, then the opposite would be true as well. For example not being able to claim garrison could lead to sitting out until the keep was available to re-capture.
  4. Staying inside an objective is not very exciting, is it? Why make WvW boring when we already have PvE and sPvP?

Scoring feedback

There has been several scoring changes recently:

  • PPT ticks every 5 mins, which increased income from towers and supply camps.
  • PPK was increased from 1 to 2 points per kill.
  • Alpine borderlands added Bloodlust for max 1 point per finisher.
  • Alpine borderlands also changed dolyak respawn rates. They respawn a lot faster now.

The impact of all those changes is hard to see because there is no warscore breakdown.
