I’m pretty new to Ranger (level 49 ATM) I have just a couple of questions about our Sword skills, Just to confirm i have auto attack turned off on #1 and I don’t suffer animation roots, and I have auto target turned off.

I randomly jump the wrong way when just spamming the #1 skill, it’s almost like I have used #2 by accident even when I haven’t, it’s not always backwards I have jumped straight through the mob and landed some distance forward past them before, which seems to make the skill limiting in close quarters situations when there are ledges you could leap off.

And secondly can we utilise any skill based leaps with nothing targeted to aid in movement, especially in WvW as I have tried to simulate the #1 skill leap while not in combat or with nothing targeted and it doesn’t progress, I am thinking along the lines of the warrior leap and thief heartseeker that causes you to leap forward with nothing targeted and can really help movement.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I have played most classes, I tpvp with my guild and I find that most classes have a build that can be annoying if played well but i would not class them as OP, Mesmer I played first as my main, I have about 140 matches with it, my guardian 80, necro 70, warrior, thief and elementalist all <20. The clone mechanic can be hard to get use to, but I find the real Mesmer easy to spot, clones do not have multiple boons, or backpedal or evade roll. As soon as you see those hit ctrl and T and get other people to press t then they are down, I play my necro as a mark build and they have no probs killing clones as they have hardly any HP. Necro condition builds are very strong but just not in an obvious way, you don’t always notice that a necro has killed you as it is usually the melee in your face you pay attention to, not the necro / elementalist dropping aoe dots on you from a far. The problem is the new mechanic not that they are OP, once you learn how to deal with them they are a lot less of a threat.

His team also has 3 guardians, so don’t know how the burst damage classed were a problem for them..

the problem is damage stacking, not hte class itself, look at the tooltip for our damage skills, other classes have skills that hit just as hard, when you stack all that power/crit and gruop buffs/self buffs, your gonna get stupid damage. this means either damage needs nerfed ACROSS THE BOARD for all classes, or we need to adjust damage stacking.

You have no idea of the situation if you say that every profession can hit as hard as a thief do.
Try the Necromancer or the Elementalist, spec them with full crits/power, join a game and see how stupid the damage is. Consider also the time you take to make that damage.

I think he may have a good point though sorrow it’s not the skill damage that is as much a problem as the stacking effects, boons haste etc. that creates more of a problem than the damage the skill would do without it. Hell I’ve been pistol whipped from 3/4 health and stomped on before I could really react due to haste, if there was a limit on what boons, skills you could stack it may improve the situation. Just my options ofc.

To be honest the best way for you to learn is to play a Mesmer yourself, find some Theives to fight and see how (and if) you usually beat thieves. Then go back to your Thief with that new knowledge to your advantage and use it against Mesmer opponents.

Hi there, depending on my build and cd’s I have, the opening burst is the worst, don’t use condition damage as null field removes them all, what I would suggest is to feint an open up from stealth just stun them but don’t blow all your cd,s just to panicky the Mesmer into using cd,s then restealth they may pop decoy stealth if so great that’s a cd used, then hit them again with your main burst, they may try to Mao morph watch for the long animation and evade like crazy, if he has a sword (one hander) watch out for the sword blur skill they evade everything and can deal quite a bit of dps. But my best advice is to pick on one that is preoccupied, we can get over stretched sometimes, if you see a Mesmer evade rolling around (usually on the outskirts of a control point) that’s the one you want, his illusions will be focused on something else then you can take him down very easily, that is usually when I get gibbed, when I am focused on someone else and then boom dead and the death screen reads 14k pistol whip.

Also just a side note to all ranged, this happened in tpvp a lot recently ranged classes nearly killing themselves to reflection bubble (not usually rangers, but a dual pistol thief and an elementalist both did I last night) if you are using ranged attacks even in close quarters and you get a purple bubble round you. Stop or move out of it. I would like to think its common sense but I have started slotting this again in TPvP as it is amazing how any people still stand inside it using ranged skills.

I don’t think the skill is OP but that’s not to say that you are wrong for thinking it is that’s why it’s subjective. We could argue all day about this but all I am saying is that the skill maybe OP to some people, so is 100b and pistol whip, and ranger pets, and bunker guardians the list goes on and on, I don’t want to get into an argument over this skill as we will never agree everyone is entitled to there opinion, but in my opinion a skill that can be cast once every 180 secs has a long stationary telegraphed animation and does no damage on its own and is sinlge target, and still allows movement and lasts 10 seconds and can be evaded / dodged can hardly be called game breaking in a 5v5 or 8v8 setting, frustrating yes but game breaking OP no. If you think it is, well that’s up 2 you.

There is just so much hate on these forums, I am just saying that stating things on forums that are untrue is not the way to go. Whether Mao bird is OP or not is completely subjective. And poxxia if you play Mesmer as a main you will know that in pvp the Moa morph is not nearly as effective as time warp. Yes it is a anti minion necro skill but it is well telegraphed by the animation and can only be cast once every 4 mins. And when you say ‘when are you good enough to judge things’ As I said above I am only calling people on posting things that just are not true. Using that argument I could ask you the same thing.

if you play every class too, them I applaud you, however there are many who don’t and complain about them. Those are the people I’m actually referring to and questioning the logic on this subject.

The point is that none is doing that.
Everyone who complains about these classes being overpowered, as I said, are people who played another profession and then rerolled to one of them to be competitive in sPvP and now they are.

A necro who is trying to play a healing minion build and has played Spvp for 4 hours (those are his words) , and has stacked vitality and toughness is saying that he was owned by a Mesmer who was doing 5000 dps without any clones or illusions and who didn’t Moa Morph him, (it’s half way down the post after his rant about Mao Morph), when you and I know that this is purely a L2P issue, and untrue Sorry to call you on this but there are loads of posts by people who haven’t played other classes and are just venting because they haven’t got used to the game mechancs yet. Most competitive players I know can deal with any class in tpvp as you bring the person not the class, a skilled team will always shine.

Hundred Blades is very hard to set up against competent players. You have to think outside of the box. Bull’s Rush isn’t the bees knees anymore (I think the predictability of Bulls Rush is why a lot of GS warriors are using the hammer as their secondary weapon now). It certainly isn’t an iWin button. The same goes for (to a lesser degree) Pistol Whip thieves. Moa on the other hand is a different beast entirely – it is an iWin button unless the mesmer sucks and allows you to run away. I’ve no idea who thought Moa was balanced.

Lmao how you can argue that 100b and PW is no OP and Mao is, is beyond me, you can still run away and evade as a bird, and it can only be cast once every 4 minutes and is easily dodged, what is the CD on PW and Hundred blades?? A lot less than 4 mins. These skills can be very effective when used at right time, but what were your teammates doing while you were running round like a headless chicken?? Did they not help out?? I’m sorry OP but this is just not making sense now, a Mesmer has very little dips without clones & illusions and he CANNOT do 5000 dps with or without them, burst damage and dps are 2 completely differentthings, if you got beat by a Mesmer with no clones and illusions and with out been MAO Morphed as you have said above (sorry for some reason I can’t use quotes here) this really is a L2P issue and I’m afraid it is just turning into another one of ‘those’ posts. If you read the forums nearly every class is OP, and that is just because people are not use to the game mechanics yet. This is not a 1v1 pvp game (hence no duels) its based around team play, and the lack of a holy trinity is taking people a while to get use to.

Seriously, you have no clue what you talk about. Necro pets do NOT stay on the mesmer. Thieves’ vanish abilities make them bogus and unresponsive, too.
It gets even worse (if that is possible) when a Mesmer drops his clones and phantasms and then vanishes. Then you can be 100% certain that the pets lose their target (the mesmer) and attack the clones.

But hey, why bother? You have an I-Win button versus necros with pets anyway. Yes, just 1 button press is enough: transform him into a Moa and all pets are gone and the CDs are 30sec-2min

Moa is a 2 second cast time ability with a very distinctive animation. Dodge it or rupt it. It’s not that hard. Moa is lame but very counterable unless you’re in a zerg or something.

edit: More on topic, the problem isn’t so much the damage it’s the spikyness because the attack time is so high. IIRC phantasms hit once every 4-5 seconds. They should hit once every second instead for 20% of the damage.

The current system both overly frontloads the damage and misleads people into thinking they’re taking much higher DPS than they actually are.

Yeah the cd on pistol phantasm is awful, and I agree it causes a lot of hate without people actually understanding the cast times, I see them stood for what seems like an eternity without firing a shot. And to the OP as there is not healers in this game you have to stack vitt and toughness as dead dps is no DPS and once they have dropped you fast they will call targeting you constantly as they know you will drop fast as you have no hp pool or toughness. So it’s better to sacrifice raw dips for more survivability every day of the week.

No but you said he killed you in 4 seconds and the Moa bird cast animation takes a few seconds, so really he burst you down in 1 second, and if not you didn’t see him coming, so you may not have seen a ranger or rifle warrior attacking you as well, I am just saying that if you think the Mao morph is OP that is one thing, but to state that a Mesmer burst you down in 4 seconds when Mao morph has a few second animation is just not true, unless you got turned into a bird with out seeing the Mesmer in which case he could have had 10 seconds before that to set up phantasms etc before he popped bird on you, now for a Mesmer to do it in 15 seconds I believe, but show me a dps class that couldn’t burn ou down in 15 secs if they got the jump on you.

This problem should fix itself after a while. You don’t have to l2p, but if enough other people l2p then most Mesmers will switch to Time Warp and you’ll have a whole new set of problems.

Lols now then there will be some QQ’s on the forums, my guild mates wet them selves when I pop that with melee dps around.

Also to OP I played a healing imperial agent in SWTOR but what you forget is that there is no trinity in GW2, and hence no really healing class, you cannot out heal any damage source in PvP, you need to be more mobile use evade etc, and make the best use of your cc, GW2 seems to be more based around an offensive use of skills than a defensive one (apart from bunker guardians), and this now makes it clearer why you maybe feel hard done by, there are no healers in this game, and I think you maybe class your sef as one, and that is where you could be struggling with the game mechanics a bit.

Yes but the bird didn’t kill you and you can evade as. Bird, without knowing what skills they used it is hard to tell, but ALWAYS pay attention to your death screen. As a Mesmer I find it hard to believe that they got you down in 4 seconds as the bird cast animation takes a few seconds so really he dropped you to zero in 1 second, and if not you can’t have seen him coming which refers you to my above post, and also if you didn’t pay attention to the death screen how do you know it was the Mesmer alone who killed you??
if they were phantasm build they would not have long enough to pop up 2 phantasms in that time also the pistol phantasm would only get off 1 burst of fire that at best with crits may take off 8k and he couldn’t pop another dualist as they have a longer CD, so you are relying on his direct damage which against a strong toughness build would not drop you that fast, what is your HP pool like? Did you notice any phantasms, if so what were they.

I am asking because I hope this is a truthful post and that your facts are correct as I would hate to think this was just another troll post. Trying to draw hate due to the fact you feel hurt someone beat your build.

What skills killed you in the death screen?? Just trying to understand as a Mesmer myself what they could have done, did you have confusion or reflective bubble on you? The Mao bird will cancel your minions, as you are no longer an agent of death you are a bird so you don’t deserve the servants of death :p there is always a reason why you died, if I get 100b or pistol whipped to death I am usually annoyed with myself as I didn’t get out of the way or use my abilities to the best, or had burned cd’s before I got jumped. You can sometimes be unlucky, and in return the attacker can be lucky, but I really don’t see the need to bring your frustrations here and start yet another Thief/ Mesmer /guardian are OP thread, just accept you cannot win every match, it is not a perfect 1v1 dual that both sides are prepared for. I can tell you I TPvP a lot with my guild, and good players know how to deal with me very effectively if they get the jump or I am preoccupied, if your eyes and attention was somewhere else and you got jumped any decent player of any class would eat you (or any player up) as they get to plan there assault on you, stun locked and pistol whip or 100b, or pistol phantom, Mao bird, or what ever there specific build is.

I’m sorry you feel hard done by and that you have to post here, but you probably met a good player with a strong build that got the jump on you with there optimum rotation.

What did you record with? I’m trying Fraps but really struggling with FPS in game when recording. I’m saving it to a different hard drive and using a semi decent system 2×470 SLI, 1090t oc,d to 3.8. And WD. Black drives apart from OS on SSD. But drops to like 20 fps when recording.

Being in the worst gear and facing someone in the best gear never felt as bad as some of the stuff I’ve experienced in this game (in the tankiest of builds, at that!) The potential is there, but some tweaks definitely need to be made.

I have seen way worse in rift and aion to name but a few, and it is far worse than anything I have seen here. Out geared is a far more demoralising gaming issue than build difference, twinks are a prime example of gear ruining a pvp bracket. If you think what we have here is worst then I am sorry we will have to agree to disagree. At least we do not have to level a character up max level to experience equal PvP, if you are unhappy that you can’t compete with a certain class you can change to that class and be playing in the same pvp matches within 10 mins.

I really like the fact that there are no stat boosts, I like the differant looks you can get to stroke your kitten, but ultimately It comes to skill and build choice, you still get a fair bit of paper, scissors, stone with the different build types ( just look how many ‘this class is OP’ threads there are) with out adding the ‘they out gears me Crutch so what’s the point’ excuses for afk ing battlegrounds, I don’t think anyone will want the level of battleground spawn camping seen in other MMO’s

I use GS / Staff in PvP, awesome build that’s all I can say, with the right build this is a great if some what tanky build.

If it doesn’t fit your play style don’t use it but all I can say is that if you want survavability and great control ( you sacrifice dps but conditions are not affected by toughness so it makes for a more productive build) give it a go.

There are not a lot of builds I can’t take down with a GS / staff build in pvp.

Mesmers have numerous builds available, I prefer defensive to dps, but a lot of the isuues here are very easy to address if you pay attention, and there burst is NO WHERE NEAR that of a warrior and thief. Tbh most people spec into a pure dps build and then complain when they get burst down as they have zero toughness and a small health pool. Über dps is no good if your dead.

If they are dishing out loads of damage then they have a glass cannon build so target them and the ones who say they can’t, look for the non AI moves (evasion rolls etc.) then target mark them (ctrl + t), then get everyone near you to press T (they auto target them) and burst them down.

Downed state is easy only the real one has a red triangle mark above them. Seriously all classes are op in the hands of a good player against a bad one. A lot of people are still learning about classes. It has been said so much in these forums but the following points are always the prevalent in all these kinds of “X is OP”

1. Team work is a key to S/T pvp, if you are all trying to take down different targets = fail
2. Play to the team strengths if they are zerging points and out DPS you then take the other points. I guarantee a lot of the QQ comes from been out numbered by dps players using CD,s etc.
3. If you are having a problem against a class role it and play it in PvP for a few hours you will learn ALOT!!
If you are too lazy to do the above please don’t come QQing to get classes nerfed because you are too lazy to learn and adapt.

Team build up can make such a difference learn to play with the tools you have, a square peg will never fit in a round hole. If they have all melee dps and three of them are stood on a control point don’t run into the middle (your not chuck Norris) then qq when you are burst down.

Sorry this may sound a bit ranty but there are so many this class is OP threads ATM it is getting a bit tiresome.

I play in tournaments a lot with my guild and the op is right, a guardian is a huge advantage to have so they can bunker down on a control point ( usually the one closest to the enemy spawn), it will take usually 2 or 3 people to take him down leaving you free to cap the others, and when they eventually kill him he simply goes back and rinse and repeat. If they do decide to leave him alone then you only have to concentrate on keeping 1 other point and it’s an easy win.

However if the other team employs the same tactic it can get fun lols. And the guardians can do no damage while built that way.

But this only seems prevalent in Tpvp as Spvp is just a Zerg fest and tactics don’t matter as much.

This could be me being a noob, but is there a show Target of Target option? This is something I have got used to in so many mmo’s but can’t seem to find it hear, I think this is crucial to see what the boss is targeting in PvE, (and pvp for that matter).

Fully agree with the OP, our guild is PvE / PvP, and while the PvE is great we have players who just play for the PvP side. We have a dedicated team of PvPers, and we love the pvp so far but without all the things the OP mentioned this may get stale very quickly.

I would really like to know this too, but I think the answe will be no. I have tried everything to do it but so far no joy.
