Baffled by undiscovered vista

Lazuli.2098

If I remember correctly there are 2 tricky spots for that vista. After jumping over to the first awning, jump up to the highest point on that awning and then over to the one in the middle. The other tricky spot is when going up the surface of the rock as far as you can then you have to jump over the ridge to the other side. That particular maneuver is required in many vistas and jumping puzzles.

Oh wait a minute I see you are having trouble getting over to the first awning. Yes that is difficult too. Backup so you can take a running leap. And yes having a speed buff helps. So I guess that makes 3 tricky spots.

It’s 24 hours after YOU LAST DID IT that you can tag the JP chest.

My experiment this evening refutes this. Reset is 8 PM here on EDT. At 7:15 PM I did the Urmaug’s Secret JP with one of my characters and opened the chest. Reset happened at 8 PM. Went to the chest again at 9:15 PM and I was able to open it again. So it doesn’t require you to wait 24 hours.

It always seemed to be on server reset, as far as I could tell. But, I haven’t checked to make sure, lately.

Either way, you can’t open the same chest more than once every 24 hours.

I do regularly. Most are reset when the servers are reset. Some have some other reset timer, but not as long as 24 hours. My thief opened Troll’s End yesterday afternoon, it didn’t get reset at server reset last night, but he opened it this morning.

Edit: Of course it could have been some kind of glitch.

Mine seem to be about reset. The only exception seems to be if you open one in the 6 hours before reset and then visit it again at reset. It may not be available till that much time has past. For example, if you open one 4 hours before reset it might be 2 hours after reset (6 hours). If you open one an hour before reset it might be 5 hours after reset (again 6 hours).

Ah. This explains it.

I often leave any of my level 80’s that I haven’t been playing at jumping puzzle chests. I’ve only got 2 currently stationed there. Last night right after reset the first chest I tried was already opened. The second one I didn’t attempt right away but was able to open. I didn’t log on for yesterday’s dailies until the afternoon so 6 hours does seem about right. Just checked again today and was able to get the first chest now. This has happened in the past occasionally because I don’t always log in at the same time of day.

New to GW2. Guardian or Elementalist?!

Since your friends are both going with light armor professions I would recommend guardian over elementalist as your first (although after mesmer they are both some of my favorites). Since you have already received much good advice I’ll only add one thing: don’t feel stuck with your first choice, either you or your friends. You have 5 character slots. If your first choice just doesn’t seem to be fun try another profession. Keep in mind though that most professions become more fun as you level up and start to understand how to play them.

I’ve created ranger (and I like this class so far), but then I stumbled across new traits system and was completely shocked by it. I remember how fun it was to plan and build my first character when I bought the game, but now it’s gone for good. I’m just level 20 with my ranger, but I already feel a bit bored because I know that no matter what, I will not be able to customize my character in a long time.

Leveling used to be fun. Now it is not much fun, even for characters that were started before April 15 and have all their traits unlocked. I’ve got 10 characters, all pre-April 15. Only 3 were below 80 when the trait system was changed. They were in their 20’s and 30’s and are still only in their high 60’s and mid 70’s. I’ve been playing less than I used to.

In the old system getting to place a trait point every level may not have done much as far as character stats but it was a psychological reward for reaching the next level. And picking a new trait every 5 levels synchronized with the crafting levels for armor and equipment giving an extra boost of fun picking out traits and stuff for your new improved character.

As far as having to unlock traits with this new screwed up system – no thank you. A good idea poorly implemented.

…….
To put it simply, go ahead and quit if you so desire. Unless you spent more money on gems regularly than on the game itself, that will be a net gain for Anet. And I’ll personally be glad to have less lag and less players with a bad attitude.

I have spent more money on gems than on the game itself, but no more. I liked leveling alts, but no more. So although I have not stopped playing I have stopped buying slots for alts. In some regards this new trait system is good for me since I will not level a character under this new trait system and 10 characters really is enough.

EDIT: I still enjoy playing GW2 with my level 80 characters but a fun part of the game is no longer available to me. And I can no longer recommend this game to others and I no longer have a GW2 banner in my sig file on other forums.

I would recommend you not delete your original character. You may want to play it again. All characters begun before the April 15th update have their traits grandfathered in. All those started after April 15th patch need to unlock each and every trait they wish to choose. While in theory that doesn’t sound so bad in practice it means that your new toons will be running around traitless until they are close to level 80.

Format: What I have; what would also work, IMO.

Elementalist: human; asura
Engineer: charr; asura
Guardian: norn; human
Mesmer: human, asura, sylvari; —
Necromancer: asura; --
Ranger: norn; sylvari
Thief: sylvari; asura, human
Warrior: human; charr, norn

Any race would work with any profession and sometimes it might be nice to have an unexpected combo.

I want add at a little about fine crafting materials. You get laurels by doing dailies and monthies. You may be tempted to use laurels to get fine crafting materials for the crafting tiers you are working in for your various crafts on your characters but I would recommend against that. Because you may not be participating in WvW or dungeons or fractals the only way you will be able to get ascended trinkets (rings, amulets, earrings) is by buying them from the laurel vender. I know you don’t need to worry about this until you’re at level 80 but they are expensive in terms of laurels and other currencies. It takes about 170 – 180 laurels to buy these items from the vendor for 1 character.

Get your fine crafting materials (used for inscriptions and insignias, etc) from drops or buying on the TP.

Lazuli.2098

I started to post a really long response but something glitched and I lost it. In the mean time looks like most of that has already been answered.

When crafting: you get XP toward leveling your character when you level up your crafting level. You get the most crafting xp from discovering new recipes than by making many duplicate items.

Check out the wiki here at this site to find out more about crafting. But briefly crafting is divided into tiers of 75 levels. Each tier has 3 main levels consisting of 25 levels. Within each tier the same basic crafting materials and fine crafting materials are used. You only get xp from refining the basic crafting material of that tier in the very lowest levels of that tier. So…. it s best to gather or buy enough of the raw resources for the whole tier before crafting for that tier. For example for a weapon smith get all the copper ore you will need to reach level 75 of crafting. Then refine all that ore into ingots (bronze ingots for weaponsmith and armorsmith copper ingots for jeweler) in the beginning when you get xp for doing it. Then do the same for the wood you will need refining logs into planks. Make all the EDIT bronze components you will need for the whole tier. Then make dowels for the inscriptions, then inscriptions for the lowest level unless you have already leveled past it. Discover a few recipes by making an item. Then when you are into the next EDIT sub-tier make the inscriptions and dowels for that level and discover recipes. Then repeat for the master level of that tier.

You will be accumulating a lot of stuff and filling your bags. Either salvage the newly made stuff, equip it on your character or save for an alt or sell on the black lion trading post.

Welcome to Gw2 and have fun.

One of the side effects of this new disastrous trait system is the nerfing of the mobs in the low level areas to compensate for the weaker traitless low level characters. This in itself has hurt the game.

Before I could take a high level character around with a friend’s low level one and we could both enjoy the play. Now either the high level character refrains from fighting or the low level one doesn’t get a chance to fight.

Lazuli.2098

As far as the number of different weapons they are able to use, from most to least:
1. warrior
2. guardian and mesmer
3. ranger
4 necro
5. thief
6. ele
7. engineer

Mesmer, ranger and necro also have minions to use. Elementalits have attunements and engineers have kits. So there are other ways of getting variety in play style beside weapons skills. Professions also have special skills that add interest – shatter for mesmer, steal for thief, …

Until you have tried all these things it’s hard to tell if you will like them or not. Also some professions become more fun to play the higher the level, especially with the addition of traits.

Edit: But when it comes right down to it warrior, guardian and thief are mainly melee and if you prefer ranged combat or spell casters then those probably won’t suit you. But I do really enjoy switching between ranged and melee when swapping weapons.

I liked playing a rogue in Diablo – D3 and also a sorcerer so started with a ranger here then an elementalist. I decided I wanted something different so went mesmer for my third, which quickly became my favorite. Never liked melee before but decided to try a warrior as my 4th and like melee fine here in GW2. Thief was fifth and guardian sixth. Those 6 are at level 80 now. Started an engineer and a necromancer, in their 50s and 60s now. Since I had so much fun with mesmer another one, also 80, and then another mesmer at level 71 now.

So of my 10, 1 of every profession plus 2 extra mesmers. My human mesmer is my main. She’s the only one with 100% map completion, although I plan to complete map with ranger and elementalist since they both already have 100% of WvW. I also really like my asura mesmer and my new one – a sylvari.

Mesmers are just so much fun to play, at least for me.

This patch has helped me cut way back playing GW2. I do monthlies and most of my dailies but that’s about it.

I used to like leveling characters in GW2. I’ve got 10 with only 3 of them below level 80. Even though they have all traits unlocked (because they were started before this patch) the whole leveling process isn’t as much fun.

However the one glaring flaw in this system is requiring a lvl 30 trait be found in a much higher level zone. If they just took the time to rework the difficulty and locations of these traits, it would be a good system.

No that would not be a good system. It would be a major step in the right direction, but a good system would also include having the trait tiers revert back to level 11 (or 15 if using the new trait points) for adept, level 40 for master and level 60 for grand master. A great system would have the unlock quests in a pool of quests, any one would unlock any trait for that tier.

There is more wrong with this new system than just the difficulty of the quests for the level of trait. Granted that is a big problem but not the only one. I like the idea of quests to unlock traits but not the way they implemented it.

I started on a Mac and I couldn’t use the two mouse buttons to move. Had to use the w, s, q and e and the right mouse button. When I use my windows laptop now I move the same way since I’m used to it.

My sister started on windows and uses the two mouse buttons and can not seem to break the habit. She is terrible at jumping puzzles where precise movement is needed. My son, who plays many games, and I watched her attempting a jumping puzzle the other day and realized her problem was not being able to maneuver very well using only the mouse buttons .

I would not recommend starting them out with only using the mouse for movement and then expecting them to change to using keys and mouse.

EDIT: Also you might discuss with them any key reassigns they may be comfortable with. Since they have no experience with other games they are not predisposed to certain keys doing certain things. But some keys and combinations will be easier than others. I find using the F keys to be a pain so have mapped them to x, c, v, and b. Swap is z, since I use tilde for vetrillo and teamspeak to toggle talking. My dodge is g, although I use double tap w, s, q, e to dodge. But discuss with them to get the right fit for them.

- “Marionnette’s Landing” in Lornar’s Pass (southeast)

You should probably check each map for completion (and not just remember whether you’ve gotten the completion reward).

Note that newly added PoI’s and WPs only appear on the map after you’ve actually entered the map at least once since the addition!

There was another POI added to Lion’s Arch with the May update when LA was restored as the central hub. It is on the Eastern side of the map near the entrance to Lornar’s Pass.

Then just buy the trait. A few gold/skill points really isn’t that much, you know. Yeah, if you buy every single trait then it’ll cost a lot, but just decide on a build beforehand and stick to it. Assuming you’ve been completing the skill challenges in each map, you should have plenty of points to spare by the time you reach 30.
It’s fairly obvious that the main purpose of the new system is to get rid of excess skill points, after all.

While I’m still at a loss as to what the actual reasoning was behind the changes (and even more confused as to why it still hasn’t been explained), I would like to think that ANet wouldn’t ruin the leveling experience and build diversity to reduce the number of skill points people have. New mystic forge recipes would do that, as would allowing people to buy certain items with skill points.

New characters are not going to have any excess skill points to spare. I’ve got 1 at 52, 1 at 57 and 1 at 61 and they don’t have any excess skill points yet. Still saving for some of the elite skills that I want.

If their main reason for this new system is so they can get more money from players buying their traits then they will probably not come out and say so. They’d give some nonsensical reason like they did – to encourage build diversity. This new system does the opposite so either they don’t know what they’re doing or they’re lying.

With some of the recent changes what world (or server) you chose is mostly only important in WvW. Also there are North American servers and European servers. Players usually can not play with those from the other group.

There are different areas to play in GW2:
1. PvE is open world fighting NPCs doing quests, exploring, doing closed dungeons, and living story content.
2. PvP which is players fighting against player and
3. WvW where 3 servers fight players against players to capture keeps, towers, supply depots, etc.

Google to find the list of servers for either NA or EU and their standings if you think you may want to play WvW. Also if you already belong to a guild from another game that has a presence in GW2 it helps to pick the server that guild is on. You can switch servers if you join a guild later on another server and want to switch to it.

Edit: Servers with high WvW standing usually have high populations and may have queue times into order to get into WvW. Less populated servers don’t have queue times, players just go directly into Wvw without waiting.

Lazuli.2098

Nothing is stopping you from going to Queensdale on a level 80. That’s silly. This was brought about because some people just want to press-1 for easy loot in a starter zone for hours on end. Now its time to put on the big boy pants, and maybe let the actual new players discover something more than ‘boar-oak-troll-bandit, or /report’

I’ll probably go to Queensdale, when I start logging in again, to farm veterans, events and mentored events for dailies/monthlies. I probably wont take any of my 80s but one of my 50 somethings for a little more challenge. Even so any newby who is trying to participate probably won’t get much of a chance to get any credit for taking a veteran down.

If they really wanted to stop the Queensdale train they would have broken the synergetic timing too/instead.

The next thing they need to do to clear out most high levels in Queensdale is to downgrade the shadow behemoth and/or nerf its rewards. Talk about a boring fight. Done it twice and that was enough. You spend all your long, long time cycling through your skills hoping your are actually targeting the thing and rezzing people. Occasionally you have to take out some spawned lower mobs.

With the nerf to all the mobs from the 4/15 update high level characters could no longer accompany their low level friends in the low levels. That was one of the things I used to like about GW2. Downgrading the camps in low levels also discourages high level and any level character really from visiting these areas after they have 100% completion of that map. It does seem that Arenanet is trying to push everyone, high and low, to the higher levels. The new trait system is certainly trying to do that.

[Suggestion] Daily Achievement "Heart" Style

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lazuli.2098

this sounds kinda interesting and is not so much in your face.

However there is still the other reason for the “10 rats” thing, which is to get people do do something outside their comfort zone.

You might not like doing thing XYZ usually, however there is now a daily or archievment combined with it, you go out and do it.

While it feels restrictive sometimes, dailies like “complete events in region X” actually gets people in these areas.
Sure, most players just do the fastes thing there and are gone, however they still will be exposed to this part of the game and maybe stick around for more.

There is much more to the daily then just an alternate way to progress ingame.
It is also an insentive to delve into other parts of the game.

I thought about that, but I wasn’t sure if there would still be a point to the map-part with the new megaserver technology.

Well, it never got me to PvP or participate more in WvW really, but it’s of course a fair point. Could we encourage that without making it feel mandatory (for a majority as no system will ever please everyone)?

Before the April update there were more choices for daily and for monthly too (I think) so it did not feel mandatory. Of course doing the daily achievement is not mandatory at all.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mounts are useful only for 1 thing: traveling quickly.

And vanity ware.

Way back in the old days some video game developers were trying to determine how to attract more females to the games. They stereotypically decided that male gamers liked to kill things and females liked to consume or acquire things, pac man being an example. Many games have a balance of these principles. The Mini pets, that serve no real purpose in GW2, and armor and weapon skins fulfills this desire to accumulate things. No need for mounts for this too. And since there are already enough things in the game to provide speed no need for mounts at all.

A reason not to have mounts is that they would only add useless visual clutter. Maybe a game with sub-par graphics needs the visual distraction but GW2 doesn’t.

Yes, its totally unfair that the classes aren’t all alike and can’t do everything equally. It’s just horrible. Horrible.

Realistically warriors and guardians should run the slowest since they are wearing heavy armor. The cloth-wearing scholar classes should move the fastest.

It’s been a while since I first posted in this thread, I thought about new players back then but realized that I struggle with this system as well when I created a new character. I’m a former pve player who is now only playing wvw.

I then had to do some map completion of Fields of Ruin. Completing the map was the easy part, getting there was not. That took me about a day.

I sympathize with you but since I have not started a new character since the patch and plan to never do so under this system I can’t say I actually feel your pain. Thought I’d let you know there is a faster way to Fields of Ruin if you ever plan to do that map again. There is an Asura gate in the Rurikton District of Divinity’s Reach that takes you directly to the Stronghold of EbonHawke in Fields of Ruin. I didn’t discover it for quite some time and it makes quite a difference in getting there.

How they should have implemented the new trait system:

Trait Points

The old 1 level for each trait point with a total of 70 points starting at level 11 is fine or the new 5 levels for each point for a total of 14 points starting at 15 also works.

Unlocking Trait Tiers

The 3 trait tiers unlock at the levels they did before:

Adept unlocks at 11 or 15 (depending on the type of trait points used)
Master unlocks at level 40
GrandMaster unlocks at level 60

Trait Unlocks

I like the idea of unlocking traits but here is how I would do it:

Each tier has a pool of tasks, say 12 or 15, similar to the pool of daily or monthly tasks. To unlock all the major traits in a tier would require doing any 6 of the tasks from the pool of tasks. (Edit: I guess only the adept tier has 6 possible major traits. Master and GrandMaster have less) The tasks can be from PvE, PvP and WvW but would be appropriate to the level of character. All adept tasks would be in areas of the game that a level 39 or below could reasonably do. All master tasks would be in areas for a level 40 – 59 character. GrandMaster tasks would be in areas for characters level 60 and above.

Favorite area has to be The Grove, though. It looks pretty Avatar-esque, but it’s gorgeous regardless.

I agree this game is very beautiful and atmospheric, especially the Grove. It reminds me of Avatar but also of an area in Myst. That game also was very atmospheric with beautiful sights and sounds. As much as I’m a visual person (art major in school) I also really appreciate the music, sound effects and spoken dialog in GW2.

New player, some advice needed :D

Welcome to GW2. Hope you have fun with it. We get these threads a lot so I am quoting something I posted to one of those:

“My only online game experience before GW2 was Diablo, D2 and D3, where I enjoyed rogue and sorcerer so I started with a ranger and an elementalist here. My 3rd was a mesmer because I wanted something different. It quickly became my favorite.

Decided to try a warrior even though I never liked melee before. Love it in this game. I melee with a greatsword on my ranger when mobs close in. I use FireyGreatsword and Lightening hammer on my staff elementalist. Also like to use double dagger with her. Love my sword on my mesmer. Greatsword on her is ranged, love it too.

I’ve got at least 1 of every profession. The only professions I don’t have at level 80 yet is necromancer and engineer. They’re around 50. So far my least favorites are necro, thief and engineer but that may change as I learn new builds or weapon combos, etc."

“What is different about GW2 from another MMO I tried recently is that the skills for a profession are limited and tied to the weapons used and the choices made to fill the utility slots. Every profession, besides engineer and elementalist, can have two sets of weapons on the ready for easy swap after they reach level 7. Each of these two sets can be a two-handed weapon or a main-hand/off-hand combo. While in combat those weapons choices and utility skills are locked in. Out of combat they can be changed. Elementalist have 4 elements that they can cycle through for the one weapon slot they have on the ready. Engineers can choose utility packs in the utility skill slots that when equipped will offer 5 different weapon skills.

GW2 is all about making choices from a wider range of options in weapons (and therefore weapon skills), utility skills and later traits. That means that there are many different ways to play each profession and for any profession there is diversity, unless you choose to make yours like someone else’s."

The memories reading these posts brings back.

I’m 68, retired from IT, and can remember punched cards from the ’60s and ’70s. The big turn around for me was getting my PC in the mid to late ’80s – an Amiga. I was so excited about it I decided that my mainframe programming job was boring, that technology was passing me by so took a C class to try to change my career and ended up in wide area networking in the ’90 and unix system administration.

My first RPG game was Garrison (Gauntlet clone) on the Amiga. Two people could play so my young son and I did (my husband, now X, was never interested in computer games). I googled and found a you tube video. Just listening to the opening music reminded me how excited we’d get waiting for the program to load so we could play.

Next game milestone was Diablo. One of my coworkers introduced me to it. I set up an ethernet in my home so my son and I could play it together without the lag back then of the online game. My coworker would bring over his desktop so he could play with us too.

Although I played some single player strategy games my son also played on-line games – Everquest, Wow and others. When I retired I decided to get an IMac to replace my old windows desktop. At the time the store had only 2 games for it so I got Sims 3. I love building houses and setting up towns with it.

In the summer of ‘12 me and my sister and my son and his wife were playing Diablo 3 using Ventrillo, since we’re scattered all over the place, when he told us about a beta version of a game he was playing. That Sept he bought my sister and I each a copy of GW 2. We’ve been playing ever since. My son and his wife have gone back to Wow since she doesn’t like GW2. My sister and I play GW2 almost every day and every once in awhile my son will join us. This past Christmas they bought us both WoW and have paid for subscriptions for us so we play it most Saturdays mostly to socialize with them. We’ve got characters at about level 65 or 66 it just doesn’t seem like fun after playing GW2.

I think it looks great on a necro, not so much on other professions.

Welcome! Look at the stickied threads at the top of this forum for some helpful tips. I’m not sure if they have been updated to reflect the latest big update the middle of last month.

Hope you have fun.

Annoying NPC Comments???

He uses that pick up line to all the races in Tyria. He’s not found a date yet.

I don’t really find them annoying unless they repeat there self over and over 5x and that only happens when something triggers the lines.

Although I don’t find them annoying there are a couple of Norn men who proposition my Norn female. One in Frostgorge Sound goes something like “Are you looking for good company?” And another in Wayfarer’s Foothills in one of the lodges offers to warm her bed (don’t remember the exact wording). Not sure if they proposition other races or men too.

[Queensdale] boar, troll, oak, bandit

Our server has always been: boar, troll bandit, oak, spider (when it was a champion but not an event now it’s an elite) then wasp if it was up. The timing worked out perfectly but sometimes I missed the spider because I wasn’t quick enough (slower computer/connection so my load screens when using WP took forever and also often using a mesmer).

I don’t see how any other sequence would work. If other servers are used to different rotations I can understand how people are getting frustrated because we are all together now.

I added this to the end of my earlier post: “And if toxicity around new players is really the issue, and not just an excuse for being a bully, then we need to clean up our act in all the areas since the new messed up trait unlocks are pushing new players into higher levels earlier than they normally would be.”
