Sorry to disappoint Illconcieve but it is an easy fix. I have worked in both database management and web design and my current job is project management combining boths. This would require the addition of a few columns/cells to go with the a couple of additional strings of code. Next excuse? I really don’t think ArenaNet needs help making excuses they do a good job by themselves with people playing sheep helping them with excuses that have no truth to them.

Re-Naming Guilds

Lite Ning Strike.5203

  • ANet wants a guild’s reputation to proceed it — this gives people an incentive to ensure that their guild has a good reputation and does not get spoiled by a bad apple or two.

I don’t think Anet particularly cares, given their offering of character makeover and rename kits. I think it has a lot more to do with how the database entires for guilds are set up, or more accurately, how they were set up when guilds had “chapters” on different servers.

Actually, Gaile said that they did care about this. Which is why they offer makeover/rename kits, but don’t allow us to change our “Display Name” (the part with four digits afterward).

  • ANet wants to avoid getting involved in intra-guild politics and there’s nothing more political than deciding on the name of a guild except who leads it. Who decides on whether to change? Who chooses the name? Who pays for it?

The current owner of the guild (the one in the leader rank) obviously. Changing a guild’s name is obviously a permission that only the player with the highest permission rank. It is the guild’s responsibility, not Arenanet’s to conduct fair democracy/accounting for how well that decision reflects the desire of the guild as a whole. That’s guild politics. It’s the same logic that governs how all guild permissions/ranks are assigned, as well as how guilds are named in the first place.

What if a guild has several GLs? What if the membership hates the name? The point I was trying to make is that this becomes a potential point of contention, which then leads to ill feelings, which distracts from the game. It’s obviously not any worse than any number of other situations in which guilds find themselves, but why would ANet want to add to the number of potential friction points?

  • How does ANet deal with the inevitable support issues?

The same way they deal with any other support issue. I don’t understand this question.

There are going to be inevitable complaints: “we didn’t agree to the name change” or “I made a typo” or whatever. That increases the load on Customer Service and in the case of name changes, I would predict a lot more edge cases than for other issues.

You’re right: they’ll deal with it with the same sorts of protocols that they use for any other feature. My points: it’s another hidden cost of an otherwise “simple” change in the game.

  • Regardless of the feasibility or viability of potential solutions to above, changing the status quo costs ANet time and resources. What other features should we be prepared to give up on to enable this one?

We shouldn’t. What we should expect is that the same engineers responsible for database-centric items like name changes are capable of designing an item that can change the string that controls a guild’s name, and that arenanet can see the value in giving us the option to do so for 800 or so gems as a convenience fee. It is not difficult to query and alter entries in a database, and especially now that guilds have been given a partial rework and are universal rather than server sharded on their server clusters I’m guessing that guild name is one string, and guild tag is another. This is exactly the kind of stuff the guild team was created to work on. Guild content and guild QOL. If we have to lose anything it may be a small delay on a crafting recipie, a delay likely smaller than the amount of time taken to make and QoL its art. if they have to borrow engineers from elsewhere in the company, I’m sure they can fit it in after the rollout of whatever this super-secret WvW revamp is during LS releases that are far more asset than engineering centric releases.

Of course we should be prepared to give something up. ANet has finite resources; players have an ever-growing list of requests (not infinite, but seemingly, by comparison). ANet can’t fulfill them all. Is guild renaming more important and more impactful than a sigil|rune wardrobe? (which presumably tasks some of the same DB resources)

And sure, you’re right: making guild names work like character names (and creating the equivalent of a guild ‘Display Name’) isn’t rocket science — it’s standard DB retrofit. My point is: it’s not free; there are both opportunity and actual costs to making any change.

They went out of their way to create an maintain awhat is now a fairly robust end user API. This is actually a lot simpler in most cases where I’ve worked with similar database structures.

Yes. And I think I agree with the implicit assumption that the existence of that API means they are better equipped now than at launch to set up exactly this sort of change.

(I think the most likely scenario of this being implemented is if/when they do another guild overhaul. Even then, it might not make the top of the list.)

However, my tl;dr remains the same:
This change isn’t as simple as it sounds. It takes time and effort that ANet could apply to other things. I think it’s more likely that they will continue to push this to the side of the table, prioritizing other changes with better value relative to the costs.

I know in the past this wasn’t really an issue but with the addition of Guild Halls could you please allow Guilds to be renamed?

The Guild I am part of didn’t ask for the original leader(s) to quit. And the name of the Guild doesn’t fit the personalities of the people left.

We have already spent lots of Resources, Gold, and Time doing upgrades. I know in the past it was easy to just make a new Guild but with the time, resources, and gold it takes to upgrade the Guild Halls it is a little extreme, and asking people to go through this again isn’t fun.

I can understand limitations to renaming (maybe once per year or once every 6 months).

Again please consider making this happen I guarantee this little change would make a lot of players happy.

Thanks!!

At this point it’s not available. They don’t want guild halls to become so useful that people go there instead of cities so they are not going to have certain services such as a trading post.

Yeah but it seems like it would make sense to allow folks to do as much as they like in their Guild Halls. Would take stress of areas like Lions Arch, Divinity’s Reach etc.

It would also be nice if you could go to guild log out and return still in the Guild Hall instead of reverting back to where you were when you went to the Guild Hall….

There is nothing wrong with the gem store itself, it’s actually welcoming. But it is wrong that all cool stuff ends up in the gem store and that’s pretty much the only way to get those things. For example, expansion only brought us few new armor sets (two or three) and exactly 0 alternative glider skins to work for. If you want new skins, you better open your wallet and throw it into gem store. That’s why many people play gw2 like me (on and off)…
But since you’re new player you still have plenty of stuff to work towards if you like.
Also, what you’re saying about story is not true, like others said already. I have never finished personal story myself and I have 6 lvl 80 characters. Maybe you’re getting confused, because you need to be certain level in order to continue story.

I agree with you that leveling is not that much fun, but that’s of course personal opinion and many will disagree and want to kill me now. It depends how much you like world, story and npcs. If you like those a lot you will have no problem exploring and doing story and events.
So I disagree with guy who said leveling is the most fun part and endgame is boring.
I can’t get myself to level characters , because it’s so painfully boring, I just want to get to 80. When you’re 80 you have all the tools available/skills/traits, you can try all the builds you want and learn all about your profession and how to master it. That’s fun. You won’t be doing that when you level up, because you won’t bother with builds, because it’s useless. You will be changing gear often and so it’s no reason to spend a lot of money to gear your character as best as possible. There is also no reason to bother with build if you don’t have all traits and skills available.

Hi,

U make a good post. Am I wrong in stating that you can’t level up quickly just by ‘killing things’ ?

Yes you can level by just killing environmental things and running around the map. I can go from level 1-80 in about a week and a half without using tomes or anything else, in fact my latest is a level 80 with only about 78% map completion and 0 time spent on personal story.

Just take your time and enjoy the ride. Don’t worry about getting from point a to point b or you will miss a beautiful journey.

Again good luck, have fun (remember it is a game) and Merry Christmas!!

Guild Wars 1 had a ingame store where they sold access to skills and heroes to play with (mercenaries).

Maybe you should look at that before you say too much about the Guild Wars 2 cosmetic selling store.

By the way, not everyone likes PvP. Many bought it solely for PvE.

This has got nothing to do with buying heroes – clearly there are none in gw2.

My point is that gw2 could have been better and players could have been a lot happier if we weren’t forced to play through the story modes to progress and level up – and yes this is required, because you wouldn’t level up unless you did it. There’s nothing wrong with the story mode but it should have nothing to do with levelling up and gaining rewards. This should be done through a skills training system, which is completely separate from the story mode and is vital for playing any computer game. PvP can be an extention of the skills training system, just like PvE – you have to train your skills in order to play or do well in either. But you shouldn’t be ‘forced’ to play PvP or PvE in order to progress through the game.

Story mode is “not” required. I have 21 level 80 toons 15 with map completion and I have only done story mode on one… You can level by doing PvE events and mapping, no story required….. Merry Christmas Cedric

Talk about a “Lack of Sense of Humor.” I just happened across this necro’d thread from a month ago. Is this the mindset of people too dense to see that Anet prided themselves on the relative difficulty of the raids and were making a joke about it causing tears?

No. It’s just many people dislike when jokes are being made at their expense.

Then they should get good so they aren’t the punchline.

LOL I guess I assumed (Uh oh you know what they say about assuming) they were being serious. I work in the service industry and if one of my employees spoke to someone like this I would be forced to council or dismiss.

I really thought they were serious. I was linked to this from a different forum where someone was saying ANet doesn’t care what the users say or think so I took it at face value. I appologize if posted in error.

That being I don’t even do Raids, not because they are too hard but because I have no interest.

I have done Fractals and have the Dungeon Master Title (big whoopee lol) and have completed them (not purchased paths that is robbing yourself of the fun).

See what happens when you “think” you know what is going on? (referring to myself).. lol

I hope everyone has a Merry/Happy Christmas!!!

Here’s a box image for the pre-order….

Can anyone show me where on the official preorder box where it says or advertises casual?

Or do you guys mean that you were duped by a streamer or your best friend because THEY said it was for casuals?

If you pre-ordered there was no box, and to plays devils advocate it also doesn’t say we are ramping things up to be harder.

Also anyone that participated in the BETA had full Masteries opened, where does it say they will be closed and you will play heck opening them?

I honestly don’t care what they choose to do, I have played since early GW1 through the beta and start of GW2 and was an early pre-order for HoT, and if actions say anything I haven’t been in Hot in over 2 weeks.

I play daily always do dailies and mapping. I have 22 Characters counting my new Rev all level 80 and the Rev will be my 15 with map completion in a week to few more days.

I will say I personally (not speaking for all) enjoyed the environment where I can get to everything solo or with a group. I have primarily solo’d all 14 soon to be 15 toons.

Not sure if it is the vocal minority who prefer laid back look at the scenery or not, but personally I do.

Just as a closer I am not making threats that I will “take my ball and go home” but if I had known what little I would get from HoT (yes I finished HoT personal story on my main toon a Mesmer) I would not have purchased the expansion. I just can’t see dealing with the “environment” of HoT to do map completion there or finish Personal Story on any other toon.

Again just my 2 cents

Adding difficult content isn’t the issue…adding that content constrained by timers is a problem for many. I have no problem at all with challenging content but gating and locking stuff behind timers is just a pathetic way of trying to stretch content out, simple as that.
As far as grinding, even though as of today it is not forced, the acceptance of this behavior could and very likely will lead to forced grind as time goes on, because it is the cheapest and easiest way to make content. Once again it’s a sad and simplistic way of trying to stretch out content value and nobody is fooled by that, you’ve only replaced the carrot with the need for 10,000 carrots.

Not everything needs to be group oriented, even in MMO’s the most successful have had a balanced approach. Throw in more solo content with each expansion and stuff that actually is fun to repeat, believe me when I say that adventures is not it for many, many players. It needs to be linked to story and lore.

If they want to be honest with themselves all they need to do is look at their numbers and the drop in active players being logged into the game that pretty much spells it out. Not every complaint is baseless and trying to make them seem that way is not a healthy approach to the games success either, nor is burying your head in the sand or trying to protect yourself through some absurd pretense of an information embargo policy. That is a cop out pure and simple and it only breeds contempt. Like I’ve been saying for a very long time address the concerns honestly and openly, dismiss those that are not reality and make plans to fix those that are. Instead they choose to wear rose colored glasses and pretend everything is all right, well we will see how successful that approach is long term.

If there were/is a stand and applaud icon you my friend deserves many.

Open World Feels Dead :(

Each map has their own world bosses … they’re just part of ongoing cycling events.
Two maps have several bosses (and yes I realize the octovines don’t actually fight back themselves) while the other two have larger bosses at the very end of the meta event.
Maybe at this point the chak daddy shouldn’t be counted though since they seemed to have balanced it around all players on the map participating and knowing what’s what (which isn’t going to happen with people just exploring or doing their story etc).

The issue wiht HoT maps is time/reward ratio after unlocking things that you need only once for specific collections etc and the major inconvinience imposed on us by the LFG system that doesn’t even let you search or sort the list of taxi groups – not to mention that the inability of some players to not list stuff like “LF zerker CoF” under open world content.

just a personal opinion I wish some of the acronyms used in the LFG (looking for group) were a little easier to understand. I know myself and a friend were looking at the lists posted last night and had no idea what they were talking about, so instead of joining we kept looking and walking around together.

Not asking for a book to be posted but a little clearer would be useful. And to answer the question I am not a new player. GW1 and GW2 since beta. 22 level 80 toons 14 with map completion (pre removal of WvW from requirement) lol.

Not asking for the world just a little clarity of what you are looking for so I know if I can be an asset instead of a hindrance.

[Suggestion] Normal version of raid

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lite Ning Strike.5203

Lite Ning Strike.5203

I don’t support this idea because adding a “lower” difficulty to anything in GW2 means literally NOBODY will do the “harder” difficulty.

Just look at Tangled Depths meta for example, literally nobody does them any more. Yet Auric Basin and Dragon’s Stand meta are always full on several maps.

I LIKE this one setting; because it forces people to do them, therefore I can find groups easily.

Aren’t you in a sense answering the call to have the content made easier? As you say if given a choice almost no one wants the “Hard Content” so they are forced to grind.

I guess by using this you are saying the majority of players prefer to not have to grind. Shouldn’t the majority be the group ArenaNet tries to appease?

Lite Ning Strike.5203

Lots of good points here, like the post.

Regarding population in “off-hours”, I think the only way they can (and probably will) solve that is either MegaServer/EotM style, or a partial solution. For example group together all servers during off-time into 6 or so Alliances. No idea about how all the details would work. But I can’t see any other ways to fill out the population outside of the “prime-time”.

Anyways, the idea of reducing the number of actual maps as the population decreases also has some good merits.

I would love to see some type of server balancing, I usually play PvE but when I do go to WvW it seems like I am alone and always encountering the brave souls that like to gang up 2,3, or more on a single player. I realize this is WvW and they are trying to get their points but to someone attempting to learn and not finding much help online for my server (Isle of Janthir) it is frustrating to always be solo and getting attacked by groups.

I’m inclined to agree with the OP. I have had issues with rubberbanding lost connections and all kinds of crap as of late when logging into GW2. I have tested retested everything on my end. I also can run the events timers on my secondary monitor and when I see issues I refresh the browser to make sure the connection is still active and it always is good.

I use Comcast and live in Tennessee. Download speeds average between 50-60 meg upload 12-13 meg with a ping of 28-30.

I also play ESO and have never had a connection issue, so I’m inclined to not think it is an ISP issue or it would go across all platforms.

I understand they are balancing but I am hearing to much from too many people for it to be anything other than an issue with the game servers. My server is Isle of Janthir as well. I also see lag and can log out and back in or even go from one map to another and it starts working fine. I think a lot has to do with load balancing and testing for HoT.

QA Beta Feedback

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Lite Ning Strike.5203

Lite Ning Strike.5203

I played the beta back when I was still in GW1, I embraced it, I played through all the living story, enjoyed some of the silver wastes even as well as dry top.

I hopped on the beta thinking this will be pretty sweet, I was right, it was fun, for a while. I made it through the first bit of the story you know, before they let you loose into the new area. That’s when the moment of regret happened, I had no idea what was going on, with the massive events happening all around me, what looked like chaos, I just stood there thinking “What in the hell am I to do.” People doing missions all excited like a child in a candy store. I had no idea what was going on, no clue where to go, how to do anything and I felt like I was the poor kid looking at those rich families at the toy store. Was it just me or was there no sense of guidance? Not even a whisper in your ear saying check this out. I kinda liked it at first, “OOOOoooooOOOOO it’s like kitten actually hit the fan, a sense of panic you know!?” then I had to log and drive home, hopped on after work, and “Ok what do I do now? uhhhh… ummmm…. hello?” nothing.

Not a fan really I get that you were going for a sense of chaos and that’s sweet but maybe a bit more of a tutorial of these new skills and abilities like mastery points played for a while trying to figure it out, never did and it turned me off the beta.

anyone else feel anything like this please post so I don’t feel as useless as a Soldier’s Theif Build

LOL I will agree with you for the most part, I couldn’t get into it either (I’m not a fan of Dry Top, Silver Waste, or jumping puzzles) but try to remember this is a beta so all is not as it seems (at least I hope not).

I think I’m going to stay out of the beta’s and just wait for the release, that way I can hopefully avoid the “Oh No” syndrome…..

Personally I have to say I didn’t spend a lot of time in the beta because I hate the area. I don’t like Silver Waste or Dry Top and this seems to be an expansion of these areas only. The area has several areas that you can’t even run through without getting killed unless there is a large group. I must say I spent about 1 to 1 1/2 hours and really starting to second guess my pre purchase. And no I’m not a new player, been around since GW1 did beta for original GW2 have a total of 20 level 80 Toons and 11 have map completion (first 4 when you had to do WvW). It felt like one big jumping puzzle as well and guess what ANet, not everyone like jumping puzzles.

Again this is very early beta results and only 25% of the map so I hope my initial opinion is not correct, this is just how it felt to me……

Personally I was hoping for more of Ritualist bend. But since information on the class is so disjointed about how they actually look and operate in group play, and I’m going blank slate for this class. I take the trouble of pinning its mechanics down as a sign that they are rather unique within the game, and they don’t readily overlap other classes. Kind of the way the engineer did for the longest time, until they improved the trait synergy for it.

Exactly I was hoping for a Ritualist when they announced the new character. Rit was my main in GW1, you could solo the Underworld with it. Played the Rev in the first beta and wasn’t very impressed ( I realize that was early version).

I will make one because I have at least 1 level 80 in all classes (5 mesmers but lets bypass my obsession with Mesmers 20 total characters with 2 more available slots to create more lol). If it doesn’t have any more than the beta I will take it to 80 and park it (like my Engineer)..

Maybe it was a server thing last year because it was actually a friend that told me to log out and back on and it fixed it (I have since changed servers and it was before the Mega Server release). Sorry for those it didn’t but again why wasn’t this an option for all and why wasn’t it an option this year?

Arena net is really slow? i dont know otherwise! after the mass amount of threads last year over having to deal with bobbleheads all day, you would think they would have added in a toggle. And if you didnt see my edit i did say i was partially wrong ^^ Sorry!

No apology needed we were just sharing info, I was not trying to be smart or anything like that. That’s is why I was trying to pick my words carefully as to not sound like a jerk or smart alec Thanks

No my friend you are wrong on this. I never adjusted my date or time.

Hmmm, it worked for me, and it worked for some people here too, but not everyone. some people got lucky like you, but i did not. I had to change my computers time.

Sure it was amusing for 10 minutes but it kitten annoying and they should have implemented a way to disable it.

This tool alone would have solved the problem for many, including myself. Let the players who wish to run around like airplanes do so for the duration of the game-state, but give others the option to revert back so we may enjoy the game ourselves.

I agree 100%

If memory serves me correctly (and it does) lasy years Bobble head gave you the option to turn off. Log in Bobble head, log out and back in normal. Log out and on again bobble head and so forth. Why were we not given this option again then everyone would be happy and I wouldn’t find it as annoying.

It doesnt in this case. Last year if you wanted to turn it off you had to turn your computers time back a day and each time you entered bble head made me motor exited a map you had to enter and exit the game, i did this often because the boion sick.

No my friend you are wrong on this. I never adjusted my date or time.

Living Story: Do you understand it?

I truly and totally hate it. It messes up the normal gameplay and often interferes with the normal PVE world. I was totally excited when I read that the Toxic whatever was over so I went straight to Kessex Hills to get back to normal play only to be disappointed again. It still looks like a war zone only now the toxic Krait are gone.

Been a player since day 1 beta, got 13 characters level 80 all with Exotic Armor and weapons. Came over from GW1 and now I’m really questioning if I want to continue. This has been a mess since day 1 of the Living Story. If they are wanting to attract new players they are going about it the wrong way. If they are trying to run off current players then I guess the answer would be good job.

More Choices for Monthly

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

More choices are fine, but…

Monthly Complentionist
Events
Group Events
Champion Slayer

don’t involve wvw or jumping or crafting.

I hadn’t realized the “Monthly Completionist” was tied into the dailys, I too have finished the monthly without realizing. I thought it was keeping track of my progress since it said 75% after I had completed 3 of 4.

Even so I would like more options regarding this that fall within the story. Again Ambient killer, Reviving other players or NPC’s, farming, etc. They can leave the ones they use just add a few more choices. Recycling last month was a grind and as I said puzzles aren’t an option for me, can’t seem to do anything but get frustrated with them and that defeats the whole purpose of logging in to “enjoy” playing the game.

Like I said I would like to see options that can be applied through normal game play. Even the train for 100 or so Champions is a grind why make every part of it a grind?

Again Thanks Anet for the forum to voice my opinion and to all who responded, you all make for a better online community.

More Choices for Monthly

Myself and a few other players where discussing the monthly challenges that are supplied. I would like to see more choices of things I could do in the normal gameplay instead of stopping everything to concentrate on something I do not like or want to do. I know it is my choice on doing monthlies so I guess I won’t be able to do it this month.

I have 3 things completed but since I do not care for PvP or PvW my only options are jumping puzzle and Crafting. I do not enjoy either and it seems puzzle jumping is always there. To be honest I hate jumping puzzles and crafting.

Why not do like the daily and give a few more options. Let is do 200-500 ambient kills, or 200-500 of the farming (Harvesting, mining, chopping wood).

It seems to me the Monthly is something we were promised GW2 wouldn’t be, a grind. I know it is my choice and I’m not being forced to do them but I like to achieve things as well just not the crafting, and Puzzle jumping.

I again wish Anet would add more regular gameplay things to finish the game. Thanks for the forum to post my thoughts Anet I hope you see fit to give it a real look I think there are more like me than you may realize.

Thanks!!

This prevents me from spending real money on the game because of BLTP errors. If they can’t get this fixed in over a year I don’t trust them to fix the other stuff.
