Engineers: What do you want to see that we don't have?

I’d love to see some kind of chainsaw-type weapon, so we have a reliable source of damage at melee range. The attacks might look like:

1: Buzzcut – Continuously damage an enemy in front of you, like the Flamethrower, but shorter range. Applies Bleeding (1 per hit would make sense, but fewer would seem more balanced). +5% damage to Sylvari (ok, maybe not that one)
2: Whirling Slash – Spin 360 degrees, damaging and bleeding all enemies in a circle around you.
3: Frozen Chains – Like Buzzcut, but applies Chilled as well.
4: Acidic Chains – Like Buzzcut, but applies Poison.
5: Devastating Slash – A slash that applies Vulnerability to your enemy.

I just think it would be fun to hear the sounds of a chainsaw in the midst of combat.

I actually enjoy the presence of Ferg guys most of the time. With the exception of the jerks in the jumping puzzles, Ferg is generally a pretty solid, honorable, sportsmanlike server. They don’t go stomping me when I’m all by myself; they wait for relatively even odds and then respectfully admit defeat instead of crying to mommy and coming back with big brothers to beat up the bully that hurt him. (That’s kind of a weird metaphor… basically, every Kain guy I kill comes back shortly after with a Zerg to overkill me, and then dance on my corpse).

If you don’t want your Candy Corn, I’ll gladly take it off your hands…

I’ve got almost 2k right now, and I need more. I can’t even craft a complete set of Sigils yet. IMHO, there’s not enough Candy Corn out there. That’s why I’m buying up all that I can before it goes away. Even if the price only even reaches 20c/piece, that’s a still a decent chunk of cash, considering that they currently sell for less than half that.

Honestly, though, Ranger might seem to make the most sense. Still, there’s nothing wrong with a Sylvari Thief or Mesmer.

We got good and bad apples like anyone else. Thanks though, I like ferg mainly due to our large number of respectful players. I know a few of us have gotta sick of giving Devona 1v1 rights this week due to being zerged allot though. That… and allot of Devs new comers seem to run from any fair fight anyway tbh.

You bring up a good point. On more than one occasion, I’ve seen my own worldmates worry that we might not win a fight, and go elsewhere instead. I was forced to take Veloka with a ram and two guildies who had nothing better to do. It wasn’t until the gate was almost down that some random worldies finally joined us.

I laughed at one point because three Ferg guys came to defend the Tower (as valiant defenders do), and two of the guys who were helping me ran off, forcing me and my two guildies to fight a 3v3.

A lot of Devona seems to have confidence issues. If they’re not with a huge group of people, they freak out.

Also… DAT FERG ZERG. I’ve only run into a Ferg Zerg a couple of times (because I avoid them like the plague), but when I do, they’re the most difficult battles I’ve ever had to fight. I remember Borlis being tough due to their sheer numbers, but Kain zergs have been “standard difficulty”, so to speak. You Ferg guys know how to fight. I’m usually good for about 2-3 guys, but with you… I’m lucky if I can take down a single attacker.

Kaineng: A WvW Report

in WvW

Posted by: Lord Rhett.9360

Lord Rhett.9360

Kaineng was really cool when we were fighting Borlis Pass. I met one Kaineng engineer at point and we had a few sparring matches. Other times, I’ve been in battles with 10-20 people and seen Kaineng valiantly battle with honor and dignity.

And then something happened when Ferg came in. I don’t know what it was, but suddenly, it was like Borlis’ attitude was passed on to Kain, and Kain’s to Ferg, and the only Kain dudes I saw were massive hordes steamrolling at night when no one was there to defend.

When I’m rolling with a group and I see a lone enemy, I ignore him (unless he attacks, then I down him and walk away). It’s respectful, and we’d win anyway, so why bother ruining someone’s day? Not so with Kain. I’ve seen a group of three or four Ferg (a battle I could possibly win if the sun was in their eyes) and they wave and we pass by and everyone goes on their way. Not so with Kain. Even a solo will try to pick a fight with me. He shoots, I keep moving, he shoots again, I heal and jump away, he hits again, I unload, down him, move on, he gets up, chases me, I kill him dead, he cries to mommy and comes back with his big brothers.

Seriously, Kain? I respect that you’re riding high on your first win, but please… try to stay respectful.

And don’t even get me started on the jumping puzzles.

I’ve noticed that over the past couple of days, there has been a squad of Ferg Invaders lurking in the EB jumping puzzle. I know they don’t act on behalf of FC, because I’ve known FC to be a very sportsmanlike server, but it still makes me sad. It wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t start dancing and mocking the people they ambush… and it’s in the puzzle, too. I always show respect and let people enemies by, but this is just lame.

Demoting Commanders

Lord Rhett.9360

Personally, I only follow Commanders who are known for being awesome. Not that I have anything against any of them, but some of them are really only good because people follow them around. There is one in particular on DR who I followed at one point, and he did a terrible job of leading, and we somehow failed to take the tower we were attacking. On the other hand, there is one named Smilingknight who is a very good leader and all-around cool dude. When people were in chat complaining about stupid stuff (because some people always find something to complain about), he was kindly telling them to shut it and show some respect for others. He directed us really well, and I picked up on a lot of really handy strategies.

I guess what I’m trying to say is this: They took the time (and/or money) to buy a “FOLLOW ME” badge. That doesn’t mean that they are instantly capable of leading, since it’s bought, not earned, so I would stick with the Commanders who are known for being good.

Incidentally, there has been a huge influx of Commanders on DR, so I only follow the biggest groups, Smilingknight, or my own guildies.

I joined the Order of Whispers, and the Charr NPC who was helping me along kept mentioning how he can’t understand how humans do things, to a very annoying extent. He wondered how we can walk around so quietly, keep our balance without tails, blah blah blah. I turned my music up and ignored him.

It made me think that maybe, since Charr and Norn seem to be very warlike, that they’d make up the majority of the orders (or at least the Vigil). The Priory, however, strikes me as a good place for Humans, since the race of men seems very religious in this game. The Order of Whispers seems a good place for Humans, too, since I can’t imagine that a woman who makes Shaq look like a midget would make a very good spy, nor would a big walking cat.

Still, I’m fine with my “Mentor” being a Charr, since that race apparently invented the Engineer class.

I tend to leave after a battle is over, regardless of whether I “steamrolled” my foe(s) or just barely won. One exception to this are when I’m in the EB jumping puzzle and someone picks a fight instead of respectfully passing by. Then, I stomp them, but let them get back up. If they do it again, I stomp them again, and they see “Devona’s Rest Invader defecates on your corpse,” before I bust out some dance moves. The other exception is when I’m sparring with the same guy and no one else is around. The winner dances while the loser makes his way back for another round.

Flamethrower Engy?

The knockback is incredibly helpful when dealing with jerks in the Eternal Battlegrounds jumping puzzle. I am always courteous and refrain from hindering the progress of others in the puzzle, but occasionally, some jerk has a stick up his butt and tries to ruin my day. I respond by unloading everything on him before knocking him off the platform and Supply Dropping him.

Also, the Flamethrower is hugely beneficial in that puzzle, since it gives light to everyone (torches only give light to the bearer).

Don’t underestimate the helpfulness of the Flamethrower.

What do Engineers excel at?

in Engineer

Posted by: Lord Rhett.9360

Lord Rhett.9360

Most classes seem to be able to spec into whatever role they prefer. That being said, Engineer does have a few things that it is very good at. I don’t have personal experience with all of them, but I have read a bunch of stuff on the interwebz.

Engineers can trait into tankiness. One of his Traits gives him bonus Toughness while using a Flamethrower. It’s a Grandmaster Skill, which means that you’ve already put 30 points into that tree, meaning that you’ve got +300 Precision and +30 Condition Damage. Spec your items with Precision, Power, and Toughness, and the only thing seperating you from <a href="http://www.operatorchan.org/k/src/134890023413.jpg">this</a> is that you don’t have wheels.

They can also trait into Conditioning. Dual Pistols allows you to inflict almost every condition there is. Spec for Condition Duration and Damage, and you’re the Necromancer’s best friend (since his abilities turn conditions into damage).

I personally stack DPS with the Rifle. I build Power, Precision, Critical Damage, and build into Firearms, Explosives, and Alchemy.

The thing to remember is that Engineers are incredibly versatile. If I’m running solo, I equip Prayer to Lyssa (a Human skill) for it’s Condition/Boon ability, Elixir Gun to Condition my foe and additional self-healing, Rocket Turret for CC, and Supply Drop for emergencies. When I’m in WvW, I swap the Elixir Gun for the Flamethrower to do crazy AoE, and Supply Drop with Elixir X for Beast Mode. If I’m defending a Tower or Keep, I go with Rifle, Flame, Healing, and Rocket Turret, with Supply Drop to harass.

I’m sure you’ll love the Engineer. He’s really fun and very versatile. You can Support, Tank, DPS, Condition, or any other combination, and still be awesome.

My favorite thing about being an Engineer is his amazing ability to “Get out of Dodge”. By equipping a Rifle, and using the Elixir Gun, Rocket Boots, and Prayer to Lyssa, and traiting for increased rang, I can be 2,500+ meters away in seconds. I can even lock down my enemy with the Net before leaving, just to be safe. This is by far my favorite way to survive WvW when I’m alone.

If I had an excess of in-game currency, I’d be willing to pay some for a a sweet action shot of my Engineer stomping some enemies or something.

If this is something that’s allowed (and I see very little reason why it wouldn’t be), you should put together a PR team to pimp your artwork on some prominent fansites. Show people how awesome you are, get support from fansites, and I’d say you have a nice little racket going on.

That is, of course, if Arenanet says it’s ok.

Looking for a Server with Fighting Spirit

in WvW

Posted by: Lord Rhett.9360

Lord Rhett.9360

Devona’s Rest has remained strong in the face of adversity. I recall the first time I met a Commander called Smilingknight. He was leading a bunch of us around and we were capturing places, but some people were complaining because of the “<blank> noobs” that were in our squad, and that we were just going to lose all of the points anyway. He calmly pointed out that we were all having a good time, and we were winning, so there was no reason to freak out.

No surprise, we lost all of those points that night when we went to sleep and Kaineng logged on. Nonetheless, we’ve maintained a fighting spirit.

Another thing I notice is the sportsmanlike conduct from my worldmates. In the Eternal Battlegrounds jumping puzzle, I always stand aside and let rival Invaders pass by uncontested, and I notice that other people from DR do the same. Even when an enemy decides to be stupid and attack us, I’ve witnessed, on more than one occasion, the DR people down the enemy and leave him alone to get back up. Sort of a “Hey man, we’re going to the same place, let’s leave our differences at the portal,” kind of thing.

Also, queues are nonexistent, since we’re the smallest server (or we were… not sure if we are anymore).

And hey, I hear we’re winning our bracket this week. So I guess courage and consideration pay off? I certainly hope so… but hey, as long as we’re having fun, winning doesn’t really matter. :-)

Outmanned buff FIX

in WvW

Posted by: Lord Rhett.9360

Lord Rhett.9360

The Outmanned buff has never done anything to save my life when a horde of enemies comes steamrolling over me.

I like the idea of displaying which areas are outmanned in the WvW menu. In my guild, while our world is in an intense battle storming the castle or something, we head to the borderlands of the world who owns the castle, to divide their attention. By getting a warning when the world owners decide to come deal with us, we have a chance to retreat.

It might make it hard to take stuff, though, because they have warning that we’re taking stuff, so perhaps the info displayed is tied to how a world owns in that location. For example, if a world own everything in their borderlands, it would seem realistic that said world has scouts relaying information about enemy movements to everyone in the world.

Let’s say that a world owns everything in their Borderlands. In the WvW menu, they would see roughly how many invaders are in said BL (give or take a few). As Towers and Camps fall, it would make sense that the “scouts” have access to progressively more inaccurate reports, until only very rough estimates are being relayed to the WvW menu (give or take a several dozen).

It would definitely add an interesting mechanic to the game. I can see how even this small change could have a huge impact on the way WvW is played.

Idea for new blueprint

in WvW

Posted by: Lord Rhett.9360

Lord Rhett.9360

Cannon blueprints would be pretty sweet. So would more types of battering rams, mobile catapults, etc… The possibilities are endless, really.

But as for the original idea… I agree. Constructing some sort of wall or shelter would be of immense help on the battlefield, and isn’t really off-base as far as medieval combat is concerned (which is what GW2 seems to take a lot of pointers from). A place to retreat and heal up while storming the castle would make sieges more fun, IMO.

Population Imbalance Solutions, "Night Capping", Etc.

in WvW

Posted by: Lord Rhett.9360

Lord Rhett.9360

I agree, adding PvE during a world’s off-peak hours would help greatly. I hate it when I’m the only guy running around my borderlands, trying to avoid running into the enemy battalion taking all of our stuff. Even a group of four NPCs with a Veteran to “lead” them would make me feel less vulnerable.

And the fix doesn’t have to be extreme. While I’d love to see a random dragon challenge Kaineng for capturing everything while the other worlds are asleep, a roaming group of angry centaurs would do just as well.

It could also stop problems with huge roaming battalions stomping out random solo guys (like me) wandering about during the off-hours. If I saw an army approaching from the south, and a centaur stampede following me, I’d feel like I at least had a chance to escape.

It would make the game more fun, IMHO. Even when I’m trying avoid roaming armies, the world seems pretty empty when I play. Doing battle with a squad of enemy NPCs would help spice things up and keep things interesting. I love it when there are hundreds of people on and there is always something exciting happening, but most of the time, I seem to play during our off-hours.

That’s my two silvers… or coppers.
