The Matched Entry system for WvW

Maybe some of the T1 would transfer the lower servers. If they really like the challenge, they can push a lower server to the top with balanced matchs.

As for exploiting the system, one can work out a punishment that servers could not field more than say 5 players with no queue can only play Eotm on the next match.

As for the Queued players, Eotm could be really fun if your goal matches with commanders’, domination or K-train. It has massive zerg all the time if you commanders do not K-train only.

For this reason, it would be good to have more overflows in Eotm to choose from and players know what to expect before going to an overflow and less likely to be disappointed.

As for friends playing together, you can all transfer to a low population server and play together and be founders of a new beginning there.

If one day you found, with your success, you could not play together again, you could all transfer together again.

With each iteration, the servers would be more evenly populated and more and more players would be able to play together at the same time.

The Matched Entry system for WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Lord of Rings.5371

Lord of Rings.5371

In a 2 team match, only paired players from each team allowed entry and the rest are queued and a cap on the total population is set optimized with available resource to reduce lag. If a player leaves, Matched Entry system suspended until the population balanced again either after a player from another team leaves or a new player joins to balance the match.

With the 3 team matches, like WvW, three players from each team enter together and independent map choices. If one side runs out of players, the other 2 sides are queued. Similarly, if a player leaves, the Matched Entry system suspended until the population balanced again either after a player each from each other team leaves or a new player joins into to balance the match.

When queued, players are offered a choice to Eotm with placement in queue unaffected or just wait and do nothing. Of course they can choose Eotm to start with.

Use Matched Entry for Eotm and limit the size of Eotm to create multiple overflows.

Always randomly match a WvW games except assign different colors to the top populated servers so that Eotm population for each color is optimally balanced.

With a population balanced game, a match between a top server and lower servers, for example JQ vs IoJ vs ET, should be more of a game of skill and organization than the size of a zerg.

It would also encourage top servers to transfer to a lower server or stay in queue to create more overflows for EotM.

Not everyone like to K-train on Eotm and not everyone is ready for domination. Eotm would be really fun if one can play what one wants instead of following a commander who plays a different style. It was one of the best experience I had in the game. It is also a place to train commanders.

For a Eotm match, players should be able to choose the style of the game with choices of “Domination”, “K-train”, Mixed”, “GvG (private)”, “or “Just for Fun (Default)” either preset at entry (or advertized by commanders).

This Matched Entry system for WvW should be a better experience for all sides, neutral on transfer and gives commanders the challenges they seek.

I am from FA and I play an elementalist “Fire Water Air”.

— “Steam” should be part of Tempest

Point of No Return

Lord of Rings.5371

Point of No Return.

So essentially, if we leave GW2 after this patch, we will not be able to return?

-Any account that has not been logged in for the past 60days gets banned.
-Any character that has not been played in 30days gets deleted.
-Any character that has not been played in 15days gets their level halved.
-Any character that has not been played in 7days lose all of their skill points.
-Any character that has not been played in 24hours loses all 13 traits of a line chosen by RNG.
-Any character that has not stored anything in a specific bank tab in 24hours gets that bank tab deleted and loses everything in it.
-Any character that has not used a specific skill in 24hours has to relearn that skill.
-Any character that has not used a specific waypoint in 24hours has to pay double the cost for each 24hours they have not used that waypoint.
-Any character that has broken armor now loses that piece of armor permanently.
-Any character that has not swung a sword again cannot enter PvP.
-Finally, Any character that dies becomes the closest person’s mini, and is forced to follow and watch that person play while doing nothing, until someone else dies and takes their place.

Players are complaining because WvW is far from a casual game as Anet claimed it to be when there are players with thousands of hours of play time and playing over 10 hours a day.

These players obviously have better understanding of the game, better gears, and better organization. And they can out last most of the casual players and make the game less fun for them. Moreover some of them are arrogant and look down on causal players and making WvW unwelcoming for them.

However, only a small number of players can afford this kind of time commitment for the game. And without easy kills some of these players found it boring as well and left.

Why should Anet spent more time in WvW when it is populated most of the time by a special interest game with few seasoned players have many hours a day to play?

Time for another Break, because

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lord of Rings.5371

There is nothing fun to do again.

Ok. Just want the developers to know.

The last fun thing was EoTM and after playing more than 60 hours of it, EoTM became boring because I learned the maps and mechanics and even commanded a few times.

Before EoTM, it was fun playing WvW, but WvW is even more boring than EoTM now.

No clue if there are any strategies in WvW for my server anymore except for the zerg to find opponents’ zerg then sizing and killing each other.

Before WvW, it was fun playing the final segments of the season 1 of the living story.

Before that was the Triple Wurms.

So these are the fun memories of GW2.

It was also around the Triple Wurms time, I learned to improve my gears and before that, the first 500 hours of playing this was very confusion, leveling, deciding what weapons and traits to use and just try to survive in WvW.

Now I found my build and I can survive hours in WvW and EotM. I also have skins and dyes I wanted and looked cool, and after 800 hours of playing I am a Silver Invader, just shy of the next rank at 670. But there is nothing fun to do anymore.

Yes. There are many activities I have not played much, like the dungeon, Fractals, holiday events, and Living Stories, or even completing my personal story, but I have no interest in any of them.

I did a dungeon once, and did not want to try anything like a dungeon again. Same with Fractals, played a couple of times and do not want to go back again. Went to Dry Top for 2 minutes and that was all I wanted to play for the living story season 2, and I have one of the Mist Forged Hero’s Weapon from a WvW Tournament that I would never use because they are ugly and I am not going back to Mad King’s Labyrinth because I had fun there 2 years ago, but last year’s visit was boring there already.

For people who love this game, please do not be upset about what I am writing here. I am writing because it is good for the developer to know why some players might not be active for a while.

OK. I played both the Prime time and off hours of my server this week, which is currently scoring hopelessly in the middle of the three and this is my impression.

This week can be equally fun if you do not care about the scores because most of the players who showed up were pretty good and we actually won most of the zerg/small group fights despite only ticking less than +100 and there were many targets to cap with the top server holding so many points.

However, fewer people are showing up because scores are very discouraging especially for people who do not see their effect would change the scores meaningfully. And that appears to be the case for us, the top scoring server and probably to the lower server as well.

While at JQ, I notice most players are offensive Necro/Assassins. I was the only Mesmer/Assassin with seven Necro/Assassins in two matchs. There was only one Monk/Paragon in several of the matches played, very different from what used to be as the game evolved.

In GW2, WvW is more like FA and EoTM more like JQ. In EotM, players can simply play offense. One could just show up in EoTM and play. There are always oppositions that make the game fun.

One day one server would dominate WvW, but they would leave afterwards because there wouldn’t be much fun without oppositions.

Then there would be no one left in WvW while Karma trains roam in EoTM.

I am not talking about FA or JQ servers here but about the two competitive missions in GW1.

I visited the missions last night and this morning and played JQ both times with no more than 30 seconds of wait and it was fun. I was surprised to see no one playing FA at all.

It is obvious that players rejected one vs the other and I only want to point out the success of JQ over FA shows that the design of a competitive mission matters. Some designs are better than others.

Many suggested modifications for WvW to reflect its /age. Whatever modification been adopted, Anet is 100% responsible for the decline of WvW just like it is responsible for the success of JQ. Maybe Anet can review the success and failure of JQ vs FA and learn something from it.

In its current design, I will not be participating in season 3 of WvW.

Some people’s fun is the prospect of getting rewards for in game activities, when those rewards are missing or extremely cheapened by the economic model, it destroys that type of player’s fun. Where do you think constructs like the “Ding” for leveling came from in the first place?

Yeah. Now I do not have any expectations based on the game’s PR any more, after finding out the much of the gaming experience was unexpected, starting from the Manifesto to the season 2 WvW rewards.

So I play only when I have time and what is fun. I play it on my terms. Do not play Fractals or Dungeons; do not grind for weapons skins or armors, just no time for them.

Right now my tiny goal is a few more WvW ranks while helping my server improving its WvW ranking because I totally appreciate all the time and energy many of the server mates have invested in the game. Unlike the PR of the game, they did not disappoint me. They are trying their best to make the experience fun for all of us despite all the curve balls given by the developer.

If I miss the Season 2 of Living World because I have no time for it, so be it. I would not be disappointed.

I Played Guild Wars. Trust me, this game is not complex or deep.

I played a lot of GW and achieved God Amongst Mere Mortals, about 6 times more in game time in GW (over 4000 hours) than GW2 (about 700 hours).

GW has a lot of horizontal development through secondary professions and heroes after level 20. GW2 after 80 level, has WvW ranks, ascended armors and legendary weapons to add its depth. Even though some are bored with WvW maps, the maps are a lot larger than the ones in JQ, FA and GvG in GW and the being 24/7 WvW is lot complex with competitions in GW.

In fact, it is so complex and time consuming to be successful in WvW that only few servers consistently staying in top tiers and many servers facing unrecoverable declines.

There are those of us Not as …. Enraptured I guess. … maybe a few of the trees are shiny, but the forest is dieing.

Yeah. There was a time I had nothing to do in the game. The zones were empty on my server, and I died instantly when running into a zerg in WvW. No guild mates were online from the guilds that were formed at the launch. That was about 340 hours in game time and before the MegaServers.

Then I gusted to BlackGate for the Triple Wurms and experience coordinated play with many players. I joined a WvW guild and improved gears, changed skills. Now after about 600 hours of playing as an elementalist, I can charge into a zerg and deal damage and come out alive and I can solo capture Camps in WvW and I have done so many times.

People quit the game for many different reasons. Some players quit because they have not understood the complexity of the game. Others quit because after learning the depth and scale of the game, they could not justify the amount of time spend in the game and the extra time thinking about it outside game.

The game comes alive when there are many players in involved. An effective way to learn the game is to found others and play along. An effective way to quit the game is to spend time with people who do not play this game.

Players are left on their own, and if they aren’t theorycrafters like the top 5% of us, they aren’t going to know squat about how to play the game.

Agree. After about over 450 hours of play, I learned to solo capping Sentries in WvW and after about 600 hours solo capping Camps.

Getting all the skills and reaching level 80 do not prepare players on how to use the skills effectively and what to equip.

It is a deep, complex, dynamic, and beautiful game that takes a lot of time to learn.

Knowing the complexity and depth of the game also discourages some players to continue because they could not rationalize the time invested in a game that does not offer any obvious real life rewards.

I like the graphics, the dynamic combat, the competition, and the social connection of the game. Truly it is the only MMO anyone even need.

The problem is that it is too attractive. This game can easily take over one’s mind resulting thousands hours of in game time and even more time thinking about the game while not playing it.

It is complex and deep. For example, there are traits and additional of 1315 (out of 9945) WvW rank abilities points after level 80, and as result many quit without really learned the game. But after spending enough time in the game, it can be very addictive.

For this reason, the game welcomes players back because it is only a matter of time before one loses one’s mind to this world. This could lead to lost of sleep, lost of time for physical activities, and lost focus in real life.

One way to escape is to be with people who do not play this game.

And plan ahead and do not involve your close ones in this, just in case your life wants you to be more focus on real life situations.

An interesting (off topic) question is:

Are the new information (skills, keyboard responses, understanding of visual animation of opponent’s skills) that imprinted on the players mind,

beneficial experience or garbage?

Maybe the answer is different for each player.

WvW Tournament Rewards Distribution Delay

in WvW

Posted by: Lord of Rings.5371

Lord of Rings.5371

Everything about this game is designed to be simultaneously time consuming and incredibly addictive, this includes:

  • offering an “easy” way out through converting gems to gold instead of farming
  • a disconnect between real money and items purchased with it (gems)
  • achievements and ranks that are visible to other players to create a sense of competition
  • a direct correlation between the impressiveness of an item and the amount of time required to obtain it
  • an economy tied directly to the real currency

When your game continuously incentivises players to reach for the next big thing; never really providing them with an “end” to content, when there is always someone better than you and the game very explicitly tells you that, then the kind of behaviour in this thread is precisely the result you should expect to see when the Next Big Thing is pulled out from beneath player’s feet.

=^_^;=

Well said.

The game is very well designed to be addictive. In addition to the social tides it created between players through guilds and servers, it is very simulating to the mind because of the enormous amount of nerve impulses each player experiences while playing.

The number of key clicks on keyboard for “w, s, a, d, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, space bar, v, etc..” in one minute of a WvW battle could be over server hundreds of times, may be over 500 times, plus the beautiful visual particle effects. If one plays for hours, which can be easily achieved, the amount of new information imprinted in players’ brain are enormous. And these experiences linger in the back of players’ mind and bring them back to play for the next time.

I never regretted not playing the game but have urges to play. And once starting a session, it always lasted longer than expected.

During the WvW rewards delay, Anet can monitor any adverse effect in the active WvW player population and micro-transaction during this period. It constantly tests the lower end limit of rewards. For instance, in PVE, the initial release of the “Festival of the Four Winds” almost had no rewards. Rewards were added after players complained.

From the progress so far, the developer seems to be confident that many of the players would come back to play WvW whether there are reward tickets or not because the players miss their guild mates as well as the stimulation of beautiful graphics, dynamic movement, and competitions the game provides.
