They have people that test the releases. Some things break between the test server and live servers. Having open beta tests ruins the surprise and honestly isn’t any different than just releasing the episode as normal.

That is a trivial change to the ask. Just say release day is when it goes live to the test server. The following week copy the test server code to the live servers.

Did you quote the correct person? I wasn’t asking for any change in my post.

Things are different between the test server and live servers as we have seen. Anet has acknowledged that there have been bugs that weren’t present on the test servers but were on the live servers. A test environment will almost never be the same as a live environment. Simply copying the code over isn’t feasible otherwise they would be doing it. ThInk about why.

As others have mentioned, the vast majority of players are terrible at QA and many of those probably wouldn’t even bother to test. They just want to play the content sooner.

Yes, I quoted the right person. I was saying you would not ruin the surprise if the first day of testing was considered the release (or soft release or whatever).

It may seem like a diversion but this is why I am using the 64 bit mac client as my main client now. Sure, it is not ready for prime time but it is the best way to gather data of how it operates to typical users just playing the game.

Those who are not testing would have the surprise ruined. If everyone could participate then what’s the point of having public test servers?

It’s been established that they’re ineffective in other games. Think about all of those HoT beta tests. How many players actually contributed quality bug reports? And this is out of how many that were playing? Did this prevent all bugs from being present on that map?

Or just make everything easier and call patch Tuesdays test day? That following Friday is the official release day.

Yes, I am guessing people expecting them as the same as what they are used to in other games are in for a surprise. Anet like to do things in a non-normal way.

I keep trying to get a game to be a secondary game so I do not burn out. The problem is, after GW2 everything else pales. Usually by following the same old tropes but I gave up on one popular game right after buying it because I could not do proper navigation with a keyboard. I have been spoiled with GW2.

Yeah, we’re not going to Cantha. Sorry.

But… it appears we’re not going to deal with Braham, either. Good. Maybe we can have an expansion without most of the Scooby Gang, and find a more useful crew to replace the dead weight members.

Taimi, Scruffy 2.0. A few others have done cameos so we will have to see what the ep6 story brings. Interesting we are supposed to be forming a new gang but for most of the season the only constant besides us has been Taimi. Maybe do a star trek RP and give her the title of subcommander?

Free Ain't Free

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Menadena.7482

The free account is really to get friends and family to join because as soon as they discover how much fun GW2 is to play of course they will buy the expansion Heart of Maguuma and gain instant access to all the cool stuff and instant level their first toon to 80!

That’s it’s purpose and as you have mentioned, it does that very well.

I would consider renaming the “Free Account” to “Starter Account” or “Trial Account” because that’s what it really is and not a classic version of GW2 at launch that many dedicated players would love to experience all over again!

Both of those terms have connotations which confer far more restraints than the free account has.

I doubt people trying out GW2 on a free account expect the full game experience for free (even though they are getting almost all of it). Story wise and some MMO specific stuff not considered, the free account allows someone to play the entire base game without ever spending 1$. That’s free.

Exactly. When I learn a game has 2 options: one free, one that involves money (either via a 1-time purchase or a subscription) I already know there is some difference. I probably do not know what the difference is but I know I am not giving the company $$ out of the goodness of my heart.

Words matter. If it were called a trial I would expect a full game that would expire. If it were called a starter set or such I would assume everyone went through that stage and it was something I had to do even if I knew I liked it before I downloaded it. FTP has its own bad connotations but it is the best term to use.

RP Servers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

As I recall, Tarnished Coast was quite a popular home for RPers and it may still be, as well. RPers all endeavor to get into the same map instance, which you probably know can be accomplished for the formation of a group and then the “join [name] on their map” functionality.

Yes, TC is the ‘RP server’. Because of megaservers getting on it is hit or miss getting on though, so the best thing is to find an RP guild or go to a major RP area (like the uninstanced home area in Divinity’s Reach).

Is there no progression for a better gear?

Exotics are pretty easy to get. If you encounter an 80 with less than that odds are it is an alt and the person never noticed. Ascended and legendaries only differ in skins and the fact that legendaries can change stats (which some ascended stuff can do in some situations) so are the only real grind. For most purposes exotics are fine and the boost to ascended/legendary is not as much as the work for it would make it seem.

Okay, so if a huge game does not cater to you you will gather your toys and go home?

I think it’s less this specific idea, and more how many good ideas and suggestions are ignored in general.

And that IS a problem.

Over its lifetime, the ANet devs have taken bold steps to move GW2 from it’s rather unique origins and move it solidly into WoW’s shadow. This does broaden the appeal to those more familiar with the WoW mindset, but it also risks GW2 becoming just a second-rate WoW. GW2 needs to shine in order to cast off that shadow, and working more closely with their player base would be a very good start.

Now, I’m not saying that every player suggestion is good. Let’s be honest, there’s a ton of them that are just downright awful in every way. The problem is that the good suggestions are ignored as casually as the bad ones.

I sometimes wonder if every set of players think the company that runs their game of choice is the worst at listening to players. As someone who has played more than one game? Anet is FAR from the bottom of a list of how well companies listen to players. I was pleasantly surprised by a few things when I started playing GW2 actually.

Anet ported the game for OpenGL anyway, it’s a different API from DirectX 9, so they could have chosen the Metal route for almost the same amount of work.

Well, not that I care, I was curious. I would love to see how a full Metal game would look like. Maybe one day…

Consider that a lot of Mac models do not support Metal. That’s probably why they avoided it. And you don’t need a vintage Mac to not support it, just 5 years old ones.

For a die hard Appleheads, 5 years is eternity. 5 years ago is post Jobs. Then again this is also true for the PC Master Race, 5 years is a long time if you have anything that wasn’t top of the line at the time.

However it also doesn’t mean developers are required to jump on every new API immediately. See Mantle, Dx12 and Vulkan. They may be “superior” on paper but the collective experience to use them well takes time. OpenGL is a very “known” entity with years and years of industry techniques and “tricks” to drawn upon.

It depends on your budget and how many computers you need to keep up-to-date. I know it will be 5 years before I am able to update a given computer. As a stop-gap I make sure to buy top-of-the-line: ssd a must, more ram and drive space than what I will probably need, and so on.

Mounts [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Menadena.7482

Menadena.7482

So let’s break it down:

1: We don’t want mounts because the world already feels small. Well then don’t use one. Simple.

2: We don’t want mounts because teleporters and separated maps make the world small. Don’t use the teleporters or the mounts. Simple.

3: We don’t want mounts because it would mean we have to actually play the game to learn how to use them. Don’t use them. Simple.

4: We don’t want mounts because there will be items in the store (likely cosmetic only) that if purchased will make us feel like we’re buying nothing. Don’t buy them. Simple.

All of these logical fallacy arguments against mounts mean nothing at the end of the day when your npcs are getting around using mounts and carriages that means your game is incomplete. Mounts are a central part of every fantasy mmo and that’s what GW2 is.

Which is important to a game’s longevity. If all there is to do is get somewhere very fast, beat something up, and pin on the I-WIN badge, why bother?

Exactly my thoughts. A big appeal of MMOs are massive open worlds… being able to instantly teleport everywhere, then teleport out only diminishes that. And GW2 already feels small to me due to zones seperated by loading screens.

I thought teleporters were there for fast access to events. You can ignore them as you explore and level a character.

They are hardly of any influence on the zones, that are quite big enough to ‘get lost’ in imo.

But there is no player that will start at the lower left of a zone and travel by mount to the upper right “because it is so beautiful in the countryside”.

Bar the odd exeption to the rule off course.

I think that the number of people who enjoy exploring the visuals of the game fully might be greater than you assume.

I wasn’t talking about how many people enjoy exploring the visuals of the game. They could be 99,99% of all players and then i would still say what i did.

Bzzt.

Not every argument against mounts can be solved with ‘just do not use one’. For example, if nobody is around to rez you because they are all riding mounts whether or not you use a mount has no bearing on the situation. There are plenty more examples in this thread but coming up with more is an exercise for the reader.

If i want to quickly test something i dont do that fuzz. I look for a lonely corner to try it on some trash. Even then i had it that 3 (!!!) players were ganging up on “my” wasp (not even veteran or such). Like it was a champion dropping some exotics.

Its the psychology behind it. Why should you do that at all? Like there were dozend other wasps around me. Why “mine”????

They are attacking that one because that is the one that is fighting back. I am a bit lost, why are you rejecting the good suggestions people have put forth? Nobody here ‘owns’ the open world. I can see complaining if, oh, someone is trying to rez you and you are stuck in a wall trying to wp and run back, but if they get in a strike against the mob you are fighting it does not reduce what you will get. If you really want a clean environment do exactly that …. go to an instance.

Yes, actually. :|

I just plowed my way through Astralaria IV, and it was really frustrating, especially since “night” is only 40 minutes long.

Tangent, the Hidden Garden in Mt Maelstrom is always day, even during night hours. . . Thanks, ANet.

I thought the would have made it clear I was being sarcastic about how they do night in this game. They clearly have the ability, just look at Bitterfrost, why they have not done that elsewhere is anyone’s guess.

I would implement it as a client setting since the rendering is there anyway. Some people want night to get really dark but others would not be able to see so at a disadvantage. There would be no advantage/disadvantage to players with different settings as everyone could set it to be noon 24/7 if they wanted.

Very constant crashing. Yesterday during Dragon’s Stand, I crashed out 3 times. I would say on average, I crash at least twice per hour. Sometimes its during a busy event like that, and other times I’m just standing there while chatting in guild channel. I’m not even sure that it is less than the 32-bit client, but there are definitely way more animation and rendering problems in the 64 bit.

Are they just client crashes (where you have the option to send a report to anet) or full crashes of your machine though? While neither is good the former might be a memory leak. If you can add more memory beyond the stock 8 GB you might want to do so. If not (or you already have more) try doing a full quit of the client now and then.

My character will start to turn, everything freezes and I get the white error message to send the bug report to Anet. This happens at least once every 20min or so…really frustrating because it’s lovely to use other than the crashes.

Are you using the same graphics settings as the 32 bit client? I am guessing your crashes will go down if you use the same settings. The world will look fugly though.

The 32 bit client had most of its crashes because people were hitting the 3 GB limit. Now without that limit there are other issues that can cause a crash (edit: but just the application only, not like the kind w/ the 32 bit that took down the whole system) but that is why we are essentially in a test phase right now.

12GB (all the 8GB of ram + swap) in less than an hour of gameplay, it’s not normal.
From what my friends on windows tell me, 5-6GB is a normal usage.
I’m a bit worried by the huge swap usage, I don’t want to kill shorten my ssd life for nothing…

If you can put in more ram to avoid swapping. Macsales.com has vids on how to do it. Both more ram and having an SSD are huge upgrades for your computer, I always put in much more of both than I need.

I decided to give it a stress test by using it at the pride march this year. Yes, I knew it would crash but the mac 32 bit client certainly would. In fact I doubt windows clients were fairing much better. As expected, I gathered plenty of crash reports for anet. I also saw a texture oddity (snow beyond a certain distance was a checkerboard) and filed a bug report, unfortunately I was unable to attach a screenshot. Still though, it was nice to see 5.98 GB used at one point (and I assume it went above 6 when I was not looking). Outside of the checkerboard the biggest consistent graphical thing I have ran into was things are WAY too bright. A few textures/colors seem off but without a good comparison they might be the correct things to see (did my Asura always have green streaks in her hair).

  • No one loses credit for an event because they are running back from a WP (you have to be a little careful to collect loot, if the event ends before you return).

Go back to what they said when HOT was coming out. They wanted to prevent the tag-the-event thing that was going on in SW, so in the HOT zones you can time out an event. The chest is still there if, say, you were dead when the event ended although I have not looked what will happen to the chest if you timed out. If you do time out you do not get event credit though, so if you were doing it for your dailies you will not see the counter change. Fortunately this only happens in the 4 HOT zones and they did not continue the idea into the LS3 zones …. I sometimes get the notification (including the bouncy chest) that the svanir event with the chicks completed when I am already on the other side of the map, because it takes so long to complete.

My stance on this is not too popular, but here it is anyhow:

Waypointing out of combat should be disallowed (like in dungeons or fractals). Also, dead characters SHOULD count towards scaling (they do not now).

My reasoning is that this is a cooperative game. Players should be reviving defeated players on the “don’t leave a fellow soldier behind” principle. My stance would force players to revive their fallen comrades. However, it may also require some changes to the overall scaling formulas in use.

Why I HATE HATE HATE fractals. I was convinced to join one once, even though I was quite clear I did not want to based on what I knew about them. Then after we were in there was no way for me to leave no matter how bad it got (I suppose I could have just force-quit the client).

For example if you stay dead for more than 5 mins, then when you get rezzed you have a debuff of -10%MF for 15mins or something, just some noticeable effect to put people off staying dead. Maybe the debuff could even get worse the longer you’ve stayed dead.

Debuffing MF would be a good one. Something that probably does not make much of a difference but most people will not want to trade the couple of silvers to WP on the chance that it affected them.

Another solution: disable revive of dead people while in combat just like in WvW. Now there is no reason for dead people to wait for a revive anymore.

The only benefit of disabling revivals is to prevent them from interfering with the interact button, like how the dead grief adventures. Dead players are mostly AFKers, so they don’t care, they’re just going to lay there until the end. The smart ones don’t even participate, they just tag the boss then go do something else. If they want to stop that behavior, the game needs a contribution meter that is more than just hitting the boss once.

Just NOT like they did in the HOT zones, where if you do not tag an event in a certain time period you time out. Obviously someone forgot some dynamic events do not scale well so it is hard to get in many hits. Not to mention that when several events are near each other you can wind up participating in one you did not mean to be in and losing the work you put in on the first.

Yes, we have mostly been sticking to celebrations popular in the US. I was just at a midsommer thing this past weekend and different cultures have things all over the year. It should not be hard to connect Tyria to some. In fact, I am surprised so many are mainly in Kryta …. wintersday would be a natural fit for the Shiverpeaks.

The first thing that dropped my jaw when i started this game was the amazing helpfullness when you got downed. People speeding towards you to help you up and so inspiring me to do the same.

What a dissapointement to see there are already forces at work to condemn it to the ‘not done’ corner.

By no means am I against rezzing. Even if it means I am likely going to die myself I will take the chance IF it helps the group.

If you want to renew your faith look at where someone was killed after the action has left their immediate area and there is a few seconds reprieve while the NPC is running to the next mob. Likely you will get the message that there are too many people trying to resurrect someone.
