I look at GW2 like any other hobby. The $$ I have put in (initial cost, gems, time) outweighs my enjoyment. Viewed in the same light the expansion cost is not that important to me if I get value from it … anet knows if they price it out of reach they will see less of an uptake of people buying it.

General thoughts on servers

I hate how if you and your friends all sign up for the same server you may never meet unless you are in a party. This map shard thing is ridiculous.

DT just seems ‘meh’ most of the time to me and I go to SW. I get event bouncy chests even when I did not realize I was in an event.

how to change map shards

The shard system just seems royally messed up. Why bother to ask what server you will be on (and many people just ask people they will be playing with what one they are on) only to then find out you and your friends may be on different servers anyway?

TL; DR: I can’t be excited if I have nothing to be excited about.

Who cares? You’re still going to buy the expansion. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I am guessing most current players will buy the XP. I do get what the OP is saying though.

Soon after the announcement we start to get dribbles of information …. which then pretty much stopped. While anet obviously wants to hold on to some details as a surprise for now they are not doing a great job in continuing the hype. For example, we know pretty much nothing about guild halls and it is looking more and more like that will be the case until release.

It was like there was this burst of activity for several weeks then …. nothing. We will buy it no matter what but if you are going to say “you will get this REALLY awesome thing in an indeterminate amount of time” then you need to tell people a bit more. If I know it is coming out in, oh, 2 months, fine … I do not need to know too many details. If you say indeterminate I have no idea when that is (next month? next year? next decade?) so need something to tide me over until I get my hands on it. I do not need a hard and fast date, just some rough idea when it will hopefully be ready for prime time.

Indeterminate means nothing. The mac client has been beta for how long exactly? What we have is not even a mac client but the pc client running on a windows emulation library (‘porting’ that way is a major part of why games have a really bad rep on macs). I would be shocked if we ever get a real mac client or it gets out of ‘beta’.

Wanted something new everyday.

While having some variety is good having too much soils the game. For example, boss spawn times. If you changed them every day you would never get a bunch of people there for them. Even if there was a system wide “hey everyone, teq will start in an hour” message you have people who are not logged on that would have otherwise gone. Knowing dailies is good too: if I know that one of them is to complete 4 sparkfly fen achievements I will want to get to there before teq starts so I can actually get on the map (plus get all 4 events in a short period of time).

The information is probably coming slow because they don’t have anything concrete to give. For example, It wouldn’t be much of a blog post if all they did for the specialization for the Mesmer was “the Mesmer specialisation is the Chronomancer and they use a shield”.

The bits given in the Revenant blog were given because they were happy with them parts.

Think about what you’re suggesting, though.

If they’re really not all that far along with making the specializations, then they’re talking about an expansion that they can’t promise to bring to the table. They don’t know that they can really pull off what they expect without breaking the code, they don’t know if they can get it anywhere close to right. Telling us anything at all about an expansion at that stage is questionable at best, and it would also mean that they’re expecting us to just do nothing new in the game while they leave the story stuck on a cliffhanger for … what? A year to make all the stuff and get it working? A year wouldn’t be unreasonable at all for that amount of work.

-or-

They’re further along than they’ve stated. Much, much further. They play up how much they have left to do, to make it sound like the big stuff is still up in the air, but it’s not. It’s decided and mostly coded, with just detail work and testing to do now. They’ll have the expansion out in a few months, instead of the year or more that their statements would suggest. They just don’t want people to realize that they have once again been cut out of any real input into major changes in the game. They don’t want players to realize that the guild CDIs and such were made to fish for people saying what they wanted to hear, so they’d have someone to blame for bad choices when/if the time comes and the design stinks. We might get to inspire a few detail changes, but the big stuff is all set in stone already.

So, which do you think? Are they really only able to say “Mesmer specialization will be Chronomancer, and it uses a shield”, or are they playing us while much further along than they’ve let on?

I am not sure about their coding practices but usually I have the general shape of the program early on. Even at the requirements stage you know what the customer wants, even if it is not realistic. I may not know exactly how I am getting there but I have some target to code to and whether or not a major requested feature is probable or not.

Unless they are using the “throw code at the problem and hope something sticks” approach.

I had to use a few the first few weeks as I had a sub-80 character I wanted at 80 but was hanging around wintersday too much. Anyway, I currently have 44 (?) and I am guessing by the release date I will have 70 more or less. I figure if I do not have 80 I can do the first few levels as they go super-quick.

edit: Oh, the other thing I have been saving up is scrolls of knowledge so I can give the character a fast boost to the skill level the others are at.

Am I the only one building up my stash of them now? I have a feeling we will see quite a few level 80 revenants within hours of the XP being released.

cus both of us were joking around.

Maybe you need to explain this to me. Please use small words because I do not get the ‘joke’ despite having 2 degrees. In what possible world is something that is harmful to minors at all funny?

No new race? Disappointing.

Peaceful areas? We have several. Cities. If you are familiar with an area (or look it up on the wiki) you know what events spawn where so can find a fort nothing happens at. Wandering monsters will be attacked by the NPCs.

In low level areas it is hard to die as well. Still possible (especially with hordes) if you do nothing to stop it.

Speculation on new weapons for professions

Thought they confirmed Thief was given rifle, and Guardian the longbow.

No but there is good reason to think so.

Aw, dash my dreams why don’t you? Guardians having any sort of a good ranged weapon (scepter with the orbs of slowness does not qualify) is my only want out of professions. Adding a weapon to the other professions is just icing. It would be great if 1-weapon professions were given the weapon swap ability though. My elementalist has use of different attunements but my engineer hardly ever has need of her toolbelt.

OSX crashes in new build or wintersday?

I have confirmed it is not Winterday as I have had the same exact crashes elsewhere. Something with the December 16 update has a problem as it had not been this bad before then. My mac is relatively new and a good setup, so no problems there either.

Playing it under windows is not an option for me. Frustrating since we ponied up our money just like everyone else.

The Mac client crashes often for me since the Dec 16 deployment. So far it has only happened during wintersday events in Divinity’s Reach but whether that is causal or not (I am spending a lot of my game time there this week so I can concentrate on RL holiday stuff as needed) is unknown. If it is the former there is most probably a bug in the client (this did not happen before the release), if the latter this will probably happen at the next major event (Halloween, April fool’s day, etc). Is this happening to anyone else?

Note that I have never had it happen (at least not with this frequency) at other populated areas. New user areas, boss battles to the level that kills FPS, and such.

I am a bit torn, especially when it comes to doing events in a certain region. More people there for boss events? Great. More people there for events that only a few people now have a chance of winning because there are only a few things to be collected or whatever? Not so great. Since it does say a certain region more than likely you are not familiar with that area of the map so everyone will TP in to an area they know an event will show up at and is near a waypoint.
