Before anyone starts a flame war over it there is a method to my madness rather than just showing off. What I like doing in PVE is helping new players, but they may not even notice me because of downleveling. So not only might some wonder about the commander tag (or may know it means ‘someone who probably knows a little bit’) but it allows me to say something like ‘if anyone needs help look for the red icon on your map’ in map chat.
So, does anyone thing this was a good idea or not? If not, do you have any better suggestions?
I think many will ignore it because of the lukewarm reception of the personal story. But for those that have a degree of appreciation of the PS, I’m in the part where you choose your preferred order. I’m playing as a male mesmer asura btw.
Reasons to go Priory:
- My 1st character’s part of the Priory
- The Personal Story instance where the Priory asura scholar hosts a press conference is better than the instance story of choosing the Whispers (it’s where you kill Rakt)Reasons to go Whispers:
- Tybalt. Just Tybalt.
- It’s interesting to know which NPC’s reveal to you that they’re part of the OrderSo for those who listen, which of the two orders did you choose and why? BTW: I didn’t choose Vigil cause it’s the least interesting for me, pertaining to my male mesmer asura.
I have a character in each (although since I have 4 2 went to the Priory). Aside from 3 levels in the PS and who you get as a mentor there is not any real difference. Even after you get access to the Orr gates you can use any of the 3 sets of gates.
Tybalt should be a legend.
Just saying…For only 1600 gems, you too could supplement your new Revenant’s repository, see Gem Store for details.
Not sure what you are referring to in the gem store.
BTW, repository? Do revenants use git now?
Revenants are missing the most obvious legend of all.
Think about who’s going to be the first: Rytlock Brimstone. The charr warrior. Now, think back to charr heroes of legend, and one REALLY stands out.
Tybalt?
JUST guild halls? People have been asking for them for a long time and they have now confirmed them but with no details at all. I am sure I am not the only one who has that at the top of their list to hear about.
Release date? Everyone wants to hear that but a good guess is somewhere in Q3.
Cost? I am not rich but I just bought $35 of gems so I could spend 300 gold on one item. A reasonable cost for HOT would not be out of my game budget no matter what it is. Too high and not enough people will buy it.
If you have used any other game the controls should be easy to learn (and most keystrokes can be remapped anyway). The most annoying things for me was movement (I am used to using the arrow keys) and diving (it is more awkward than it needs to be). You should be able to get the basics the 1st day.
You can remap those. You can even have both at the same time. Both my WASD and arrow keys work for movement.
Diving is just tilt camera and forward movement key or hold both mouse buttons.
I know you can remap them and if you reread my post I said that. Just that I was swearing at my computer until I had a chance to do so while I went through the initial tutorial.
The problem with diving is it is not intuitive and can not be changed. It should not involve taking your fingers off the keyboard, where they are 99% of the time, to use your mouse. The ‘swim down’ key should do exactly that when you enter the water, which is what you would expect.
edit: Another problem with diving is to do all that you stop moving forward, even if just for a millisecond.

If your looking for a reason why someone would do something like this I’ll tell you. Look at your replies. The world has become jaded. Surely good intentions don’t exist anymore.
It depends on the community. I compare it to Second Life in this respect which, bizarrely, canceled the mentor program a few years ago.
The mentors, including myself, were extremely upset. No, not because we would lose access to where new members logged in for the first time, but because by losing that access we would be unable to help them. The replacement for human beings that could troubleshoot problems was a sign (amidst other signs) telling people how to use the wiki.
Note that there was no real benefit from being a mentor. We were not paid or anything. Sure, we had a title to identify us to new people but anyone could make a title saying the same exact thing. We were doing it because we loved the community and wanted to help it.
Yes, timers are good. There is a low level boss every half hour (2 hours apart for one, but the 4 are spread out). The higher you go, the more bosses. Most bosses are successful, especially if it is a daily.
It will go bye-bye. The best solution is to have an alt that is always in it and with full admin powers.
As others have said there are many ways to get to 80. You do not even need to do the ‘bring me all the truffles’ stuff at all unless you are trying to complete a map (although they are a good way of learning the basic mechanics early on).

If you are stuck many higher level players will help you. On a playable map they would have colored arrows above them and in a city you can identify us by there being an 80 next to the name tag when you hover your cursor over them. They may be busy though so the best thing is to use /map (followed by your test) in the chat bar first to talk to everyone on the map. People who are busy will just ignore chat but if not that is where they will look.
The return key will do it. Frustratingly if you are already chatting the return at the end of a line will get out of it.
I send messages often in the dailies that look like 121[whatever waypoint].
Ack … I am running around getting points to unlock the rest of the skills. Before they said only traits would change so everyone was putting their points into skills.
I just store the chests in my bank ATM. When I need more laurels or whatever I will have access to those things fast but if I choose something else I can not do a doover later.
Well, the thing about it is that, aside from the level up tomes, you can just use the laurels you get to buy t6 mats, sell those, and then use part of the gold to buy/make whatever you needed, with a bit of gold leftover.
True, most of the time they would be between laurels and tomes depending on what was needed. There are also vision crystals, so if you are running short on skill points that is a great option.
Every class has their pluses and minuses, especially since you want multiple modes (PVP and PVE). It sounds like you are on the right track: roll several classes that seem interesting and see which you like more. At least until you get to 80 I would recommend trying to play them equal in time as much as possible. At 80 you can solely work with one character and keep the others in reserve.
When leveling I figured about 2 levels/day with a character (your numbers may vary but a couple hours is plenty of time per level once you get used to things). Do not forget tomes either as they will increase you by a level, with them alone and assuming you take the monthly one as the 6 tomes you could level a character in 5 months (you get 16 tomes/month) without doing anything else (if you do it is MUCH faster). I generally start using tomes at 10 or 20 as the initial levels go fast.

I love my ranger and find I can solo things pretty well. In fights my pet can get up close while I stand back with a bow (or come nearer and start swinging a greatsword).
Other people is a plus, but the other day I almost entirely cleaned out a fort in the SW. I only say ‘almost’ because some people came in and tagged the final 3 monsters I was killing.
A few days ago i saw that i had sold a few tiny snowflakes at 2c each from when i wanted to make some room in my inventory. Thought that was odd as i had seen that there was 14 million or so tiny snowflakes listed at 2c ahead of my listing. Checked the TP, they where all gone and only 3 million where now listed at 2c. That made me take notice. Though i should by up a few stacks myself and re-list higher. To my surprise they sold at 8c. Any idea whats going on?
The snowflakes come from the tools that you get during wintersday and it did not take long for them to flood the marketplace. I have to keep deleting mine as there are not a lot of uses for them. I would not be surprised if anet just nerfed a couple million in the interest of database efficiency.
The only thing that will be affected by the change is above level 80 you will not get a skill point per ‘level’. Instead you will get points towards the mastery system instead. It will not affect people below 80 at all.
Experience above 80, aside from the skill points, is mostly just a bragging rights thing anyway.
the other 2 seem to be coming to me extremely easily but the dragonite ore isn’t, and it’s delaying my ascended weapon crafting by a lot. where can I get a lot of it?
Figure out a way to have everyone else mail it to you? I get WAY too much of the stuff so just delete it.
I think we might fall into two categories.
- The “race for the roses” type of gamer, players who rush through content as quickly as possible to get to the top level, end game, etc.
- “The “stop and smell the roses” sort of gamer, players who take their time and probably engage more in the environment, story, personal interaction, etc.
“Different strokes for different folks,” as the old saying goes. I fall into the second category and I admit it, sometimes it makes me a little sad to know how much some people miss by not savoring the moment, as least with one character.
I (and it sounds like many of us) completely enjoyed it the first few times. Eventually though new characters just feel like you are going though the motions.
Not that there are not still places to explore even at 80, but those zones would be instant death at lower levels. How many <20 level characters do you think would survive going across cursed shore for example, no matter how much the player knew the game?
Some things, like SW, only unlock at 80. I can always do the low-level content later as I will be downleveled (but my weapons and traits will stay the same). For my first characters it was fun getting to 80 and exploring new areas but now I just want each new character to 80 ASAP so it can play with the grownups.
I will do an upload when I get home. While my charrs use armor mostly from the same set, my asura uses several different skins that all work together. My elementalist uses outfits with matching weapons.
Other day I was finally gifted by the RNG gods with my first Teq Hoard. Now I’m stuck on which weapon to actually get. As a Warrior main, I already have an Ascended GS and I want to someday get Bolt. I love how the Shield looks but that feels like such a waste!
This raised my curiosity and I’m wondering which weapon/s people have picked who also got a hoard?
Is that the teq chest that gives you an ascended weapon? (I forgot what it was called) Ascended longbow for the win!
Doing whatever you want in the game with no pressure to level to 80.
You realize guild halls are part of the expansion right?
There are even a couple of people in LA saying they are working on a project for guilds.
In multiple games and virtual world there is a concept of mentors. While the exact format varies, basically it is older players helping newer players. The end result is a better experience for newer players and they are more apt to stick around longer (which means more $$ for the company).
I have noticed that when wandering around low level areas it is not uncommon to get party requests from new players. While I could just drop around $30 for a commander tag, hang around where they rez, and hope they ask what it is I was wondering if there could be a more organized solution.
Anet could incorporate this with very little investment and huge rewards. For example, maybe saying how to get in-world help on the support page (or a link from it). It has been my experience that mentors will do it for the satisfaction of helping, if that turns out not to be the case maybe toss in some carrot that does not cost anet anything (like priority in the pvp queue or something). The potential rewards to anet would far outstrip minor costs like adding a link on the support page.
Yeah, okay, it is telling me I need some healing soon. I probably am using healing whenever I am allowed to do so in battle anyway, but okay. What REALLY gets me is when the healing sigil is still recharging and it wants me to use it.
Adding flashing things that go off during a battle is pointless though and there have been studies on the topic. It is why they try to make jet fighter controls as simple as possible now rather than having 30 things at once screaming LOOK AT ME IMMEDIATELY!!!
Some armors are clearly designed for male characters. For example, large shoulders.
However, there is a clear trend to make women’s armors less practical and more showy. This is obvious in how they look compared to counterparts. I am not just talking the obvious shape differences, I am talking skimpy armor for the shiverpeaks vs something that looks practical.
So the game asks you if you want to relocate to a more empty server and you accepted. Working as intended.
No, it is not working as intended. At the very least the popup wording is wrong.
The popup says there are too few players on this map and do you want to go to a more populated version of this map. It also says this map will be closing so the first few times you see it you will assume it is something you need to answer right away.
While I do wait for an event to finish (especially if it is not a timed one) I assume it means most people doing the boss battle are elsewhere and the shard I am on is closing because of that. If you ask 100 people what that popup means they will most likely say the same thing.
Have to love automatic word filters.
[Although it REALLY upset the person in second life who made small birds.]
I’m not sure why people keep saying they have no date set for release.
Any and I mean any software company has a road map which outlines updates, features, and their projected release dates. Projected dates is a key part but when they start their sprints, they know what defects and bugs exist through a serious of uat/qa tasks.
They absolutely have a release date goal set in stone and barring any major setback, it will be released on that date which they will give us when they’re ready.
The key word is goal. When I start the first sprint on a project we know our delivery parameters and most likely an estimate but the exact date 100.000 percent of the work will be done (no ‘padding’ if you are running ahead) is not known before you even look at the problem.
Interestingly, this is something waterfall models do better. You know everything up front before one line of code is written.
What happens if they give us an exact date but still have some major feature(s) to go instead of things with known levels of effort? If an unexpected issue arises (anything from a code problem to the lead dev winding up in the hospital) they will either miss the date or wind up with a shoddy product.
Simple answer to the question.
Everyone who will not be getting the expansion raise your hand.
I was curious how GW2 compared to subscription MMO’s, such as World of Warcraft, EverQuest, EverQuest 2, and so on.
What an original question! Can I lay claim to ‘what is better, star trek or star wars’?
That is the nice thing about this game. You can take time off (maybe logging in once in awhile, maybe not) and not be paying. In reality when you are active, there is the gem store but it is not a requirement. Quite a few games have both a subscription fee and an in-game store.
edit: Oh, as to end game content? Mostly it is the high level zones and a few other things. The nice thing is you downlevel in lower zones so things that were difficult at 10 are just as difficult at 80 (albeit with better equipment and traits).
(edited by Menadena.7482)
I do not see it as really needed. If I look around and there are a lot of pets and people with longbows I know there are a lot of rangers in the vicinity. A lot of other professions have tells too (unless they are wearing an outfit you can figure out everyone to one of 3 professions at a glance).
Not even seeing, just listening. At megadestroyer you always hear a lot of bows twanging.
Are you talking about the one near the gate? I am not sure if t is a bug or what but it has been there a long time.
Actually we know for a fact that it won’t be free.
I was just being facetious in saying we do not know price info at all so any number from us is just a guess. One penny as the lower limit then.
Really? that expensive??
Nobody really knows. It could be free. It could be a million dollars. All we can do is guess based on what we have seen vs similar things. Assuming multiple editions I would be surprised at any number lower than $20 for the no-frills one but I am just guessing too.
Does anyone know the cap or is there only a cap on the dailies? I have completed several achievements and done my dailies some days.
I don’t mind transmuting, mostly since I so rarely ever change armor on my 80s.
Well, you are right in not changing armor often but kind of missed the point. My characters rarely change armor when they hit 80 and get something with some sweet stats. The problem is changing the look. Not just because you want to change from the same look you have had for months but what part of the map you are spending time in lately. Would you REALLY think the same clothing appropriate for caledon forest would be what you would want to wear in frostgorge sound?
What I REALLY can not stand is when I buy a skin from the gem store. Then if I decide to wear another skin later (or change my armor to rebalance stats) I would have to spend even more gems to put it on again.
If nothing else the gem store does one thing. Make public gem—$$ conversion and gem—gold conversion prices.
So, depending on the market, 1 gold is about equal to a dime. It really puts things in perspective when you and hemming and hawing over getting something.
The idea presented in the thread was not a change to the server but to the client (or even the OS). It would not affect anyone else.
Apologies for the necro-post but I am in pretty much the same boat when it comes to my having epilepsy. Usually it is controllable (or I am not playing a game) but sometime I am otherwise fine with a slight tremor in either my focus or hand. Which makes mandatory JPs and anything that requires being in an exact spot (like the metrica province stealth LS) maddening! I do agree a client-side solution would be best as different people have different needs and would want different tolerances.
There are some things in operating systems that improve accessibility, including handling double clicks. You may want to look if any of those options would work for you.
Yes, I was a bit let down too when I found out they would do that. Sure, if you pvp a lot you have transmutation charges coming out your ears, but if not, you only get them via login awards.
For example, it is a double fractal day today so I decided to do at least one thing that was not pve. I happened to luck out on wvw and could not find and zergs bigger than myself. On pvp I kept winding up not being able to join a group, waiting for other party members, or one where it seemed to keep me watching but not actually playing.
edit: One thing I would LOVE is if unlocking a skin meant, well, unlocking it. Where I was able to change to another unlocked skin whenever I got bored with what I was wearing. Especially when I had to buy the skin from the gem store to get it. Long and short: I HATE the idea of trasmutation charges.

I do not think you are the only one, they always feel a bit forced to me. Even if you eliminate actual jumping puzzles you still have mini versions in the form of vistas and how to get to some other content.
You are right that the camera and such make it hard. It is 10 times worse if you have even the smallest tremor in your hands though.
Norn could have a beastly bear race, but instead we have humans that are just slightly taller than other humans.
I would LOVE to play a norn as described in the OP but yeah, I class them as humans. The race is just bigger than the other and likes nordic stuff more. Since I consider humans boring in a RPG rather than having 4 playable options it is 3 for me in reality.
edit: I read in some other thread they were supposed to be somewhere between nordic and native american. That part could be implemented without affecting any game mechanics.

Here’s a clue “We will investigate into this case”….. not really proper grammar is it ?
Two other huge gotchas:
1) it is not a guildwars2.com domain
2) login pages should be https:
I been in this game since Beta and never truly understood this.
Okay, Guardians we know have crappy range. With a bow, my auto attack definition states I have 600 range.
600-what? It’s obviously not 600 feet, so… ?
Over 7000 hours played since pre-release and until now I didnt even know that guardians can use longbows.
Me neither. To think that was my #1 reason for buying HOT when it came out too!
What I did: roll several characters of different professions and races. Play them all roughly the same amount of time. Which do you like best?
