The typical MMO will charge you 15$/month as a subscription fee.
This is 540$ for 3 years which is about the amount of time Guild Wars 2 has been out for.
Untrue.
Yes, with GW2 I can take a vacation whenever I want without still paying a subscription but I highly doubt most people have never bought gems. While the exact amount varies I easily pay more than $15 a month.
I’m confused what you mean by do you right? They did nothing wrong as is.
I suppose you missed the huge thread here that answers your question?
I do not see them budging on pricing but I bought it on the assumption they would do right by us in some way. Gems. Character slots. Retired gem store items. Whatever.
I pulled the trigger for the $100 upgrade on a HOT account so I could play with the new shinies. I was taking a leap of faith you would do right by us veterans, especially if we preordered. Please do not prove me wrong now.
I was wondering about the slot too. I selected it, saw the word “beta” on the left, created a character there and played a few levels. Then when I logged out and came back the beta slot was still empty and one of my open character slots was used instead! Huh?

Does anyone know if the extra character slot with the $75 version is usable on our existing account or just on the phantom “copy” that we can not use?

I’m going to be honest : for 50 buck I expect HoT to have AT LEAST 80% of the amount of content the core game already has.
If the core game was valued 60 bucks 2.5 years ago then we SHOULD get a lot of content in this expansion. As far as we know, the expansion contains:
- Guild halls (shouldn’t even count that as content to be honest)
- New zones that we absolutly don’t know anything about nor the amount of content they contain
- Specializations
- New WvW map
- New PvP map/modeWhat else?
Not sure I listed everything but 50 buck seem to be a really high price for that, can’t really believe Anet when they say the 50 don’t include the core game. I feel like it is a sad excuse but I could be wrong.Anyway that’s just my opinion. Die hard fans, calm down go buy the expansion for yourself, that’s great. And YES we are spoiled kids, you are TOTALLY right.
Then do not get it but i have a feeling ppl who post over and over saying it is to much are likely to get it becuse it IS worth 50$ to them they are just trying to cut a deal.
We all do calculation of what a $ is worth to use and how we should use it but when we complain about something being too much this means we want it and feel that the cost is worth the amount pay but we are trying to get that price cut to make it better. Its simple haggling.
That and you simply do not know every thing in it yet so… ya hold off on buying it.
It probably is worth it. In fact if you buy gems anyway (like most of us do) you may as well get the $100 version and you will get some free stuff with the gem purchase. What I object to is the fact that we are proven loyal customers and anet is giving new players (who may or may not buy gems/bring in other plays/etc) a better deal and thereby alienating their existing base.
I would rather have it that way. If they are regularly full there should be more servers added somewhere.
Putting me on a random map makes it be a “what is the point” when the game asked me what server I wanted to be on. I picked that server so I could play with friends … who may or may not be on the same actual server as me, even though the game inists I am.
I need to pick server B because A is full? Okay. Put me on server C when I had requested server A? Not okay.
Their overall network works great. It is this “maybe you are here but maybe you are not” thing that just vexes though.

Looking at the editions my contention about the price is backed up more. It is more about the principal of the thing, not the numbers.
standard for $50 … I can live with that
deluxe for $75 … the extras probably total $30+ so it is not that bad a deal
ultimate for $100 … since it is $25 more to get $50 of gems this is a no-brainer if you are getting the deluxe and spend $$ in the gem store
So basically the deluxe is $50 over the standard to get $80 more of content. Any of them come with things like the betas and the title too.
All in all, it sounds good on paper. I just incurred some major expenses but even the $100 version is not a deal-breaker since it is a one-time expense. So why am I still not sold on it? Trust.
BTW anet, remember how I said I have 2 accounts? I was planning on upgrading both to hot before this. Now IF I upgrade my main no way in puma am I upgrading both accounts so you have lost at least one sale.

I would have no issue with buying it on its own for $50. I just would expect new players to do what I did: buy BOTH the core game and the expansion.
But what you did was buy the game and played it for perhaps hundreds of hours. You’ve gotten your money’s worth since that initial purchase. Do new players get a better deal? Kind of. Keep in mind the game has been on sale many times, occasionally for only $10. No one seemed angry about that. People would pay $10 when you’ve paid at least $60 if you got it at launch, and you haven’t cared. This is also incentive for a larger player base, anyone that doesn’t have the game can get it bundled with the expansion now, which would ultimately liven up the game and make it a better experience.
It is not a subscription so yes, I could have bought it at launch and never invested a dime more.
In reality:
I have bought plenty of gems (most for gold conversion, like when I got a commander tag).
- I paid to upgrade my main account to the more expensive version.
- I bought a mule/test account … and at the same cost of my main to have the same features.
- I have stayed a loyal customer and evangelized the game to others.
- Until this, I was willing to spend ANYTHING (well, within reason, not 1 bazillion dollars) to get hot.
Basically, I am the type of customer every merchant wants.
Not leaving is not always a realistic option (and that is assuming you are in a party in the first place, I am usually not in one). For example, yesterday I had plenty of time before an event but needed to go get something. When I got back I had to repeatedly try to join the map with my party (not fun for me and not great for their network). Pretty bad for the other 4 since we needed 5 people. It seems the luck of the draw too, the other day I had a party member pop off the map to go do something and had no trouble getting back.

P.P.S.: I also feel a little sorry for my friend who just bought this game about one week ago, when he could get GW2+HoT for the same price just a little later.
It was stated that the devs would upgrade you if you recently bought the game, if you send in a support ticket asking them to do so. So, tell him to submit a support ticket and he’ll probably get HoT as well.
Hey, Can u specify where it is stated? And is there any mention of what “recently” means , like an actual date maybe?
I had something similar where the game went on sale days after I bought it. I put in a ticket and was told I could return it (losing all my characters and such) and buy it again.

It seems to me that these issues are being combined, or more accurately the: I want to Buy HoT on its own… so I can pay less. Let’s face it if ANet added a new version made it $50 and said: this version doesn’t contain the core game, then players would complain that ‘why does it still cost so much’.
I would have no issue with buying it on its own for $50. I just would expect new players to do what I did: buy BOTH the core game and the expansion.

Agreed, they both have perfectly viable solutions and will need to say something. For example, if we are buying the base game anyway we should be able to play it, right? Even if it were still tied to me somehow I could at least justify the cost.

Did people go insane and claw the walls when they merged the original GW trilogy in to one pack for a lower cost?
Did they go mad and scream scam when WoW merged it’s first three expansions in to the base game cost?
No problem about merging existing things but this is not the case. It’s an expansion you must buy with base game from the very beginning.
You’re not understanding…
When WoW Vanilla came out, it was $50 the Deluxe and Collector’s were a lot more. Then Burning Crusade came out. Again $50 base. Wrath of the Lich King was the same. Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria were also $50 for the base xpac. Warlords of Draenor was $70.
Only upon release of Warlords of Draenor did they merge the first 3 (Vanilla, BC and WotLK) and that Base Game is now $20.
You still have to buy Cata, MoP AND WoD to play any new content above lvl70 (where WotLK stops) as well as the fact that after the box sales are finished You Can No Longer Upgrade To A Higher Version (No Base to Deluxe) and if you did not purchase the higher versions- you will never get those in-game extras (that amount to an in-game pet (sometimes a mount unusable in all zones), avatars for StarCraft and banners for Diablo).
So that roll-up/merge took $150 worth of game and made it $20.
Please get facts straight about other games before you dismiss them as examples simply because you feel “I don’t play this game, therefore it does not apply to this situation”.
Right now, for HoT- If you own the game, you get an xpac for $50. You do not know what this all includes. They have not revealed everything yet. They just revealed the Guild Halls for the first Sneak Peek last night and yet more of them is to come Friday.
If $50 has been too much to save since January all I can offer is this-
Since January, if you’d saved $30-40 then take another month and save $10-20 more for the xpac. If you failed to save up for it in the last 6 months- This is not an emergency on the community’s or ANet’s part. It was a failure to plan of yours.
I can’t even apologize for being so blunt. This is life, and this is how it works. You can disagree with the cost. You can decide it’s not worth the cost to yourself. You cannot demand that a company lower it’s prices because you failed to plan for it and expect it to happen.
To myself and many other vets it is not about the cost. Sure, I would have loved to see a $10 expansion but I knew that would not be the price.
It is all about fairness. Think about it like any other business. You do not treat someone new who walks in off the street better than your current customers. You wind up risking your current customers to another store AND the new customer deciding not to come back anyway.

It has not been delivered yet so there is plenty they can do to toss vets a bone. Gems. Character slots. Letting you decouple the copy of the base game that comes with it from HOT. None of those change the preorders.

[mods: this is slightly off of the main thread so I created a new topic]
I know it is early on the west coast but someone there must know (or have anticipated) the blowback from the HOT announcement among existing players. Many of us were eagerly awaiting it and would gladly have opened our wallets and given you permission to take out what you wanted. Instead we are now waiting for when HOT goes on sale because we now feel like we, as proven loyal customers, are considered less important than new buyers who may or may not invest more money into the game.

I do not mind the $50 price. What I mind is that part of that price includes something I do not have the ability to use. If I could use the copy of the base game as another account, fine (I already have a mule/test account but could accept the compromise) but since I can not separate it from HOT then it is an unused part I am paying for. Another option would be if they compensated us for the cost of the basic edition in some way, like gems or character slots.
Kitty-cat, I do not even care about the extra character slot, just either give me 20$ of gems or let me decouple the new copy of the base from HOT. I do not need yet another mule/test account but at least I was not paying more than what new players get as part of their HOT purchase. If I can not use the base game how is it a selling point to existing customers?
So many posts saying us veterans didn’t get anything and new players are getting the core game for free really makes me think how many of you are actually veteran players.
Us veteran players have gotten to experience all the open world events since release with new patches every few weeks. These new players won’t get all that the same way we did even if they get a “bonus” free version with buying HoT.
They won’t hear while afk’ing at the bank in LA the asura and char that say “Your face is funny”, “No, your face is funny. It’s like a little raisin”
They didn’t experience the festival events and seasoned events like we did.
They won’t see LA getting destroyed and how we fought over it while scarlet attacked it.
They won’t get to fight marionette like we did cause that is all gone and done.
They probably won’t see SAB seeing as people still riot about it to this day.
They didn’t get to farm aetherblades in zones and have tons of champs spawning.
Those are just a few examples but so many other open world events that these new players will never experience even if they do get a “Bonus” free version of the core game.
Stop being greedy and thinking its all about new players when new players will have missed out on a ton of content that is no longer available. Veterans have the memories of all that has happened since launch of this game to this date while new players will never experience those events.
Half of the stuff you mentioned I did not experience either. I have been a model player, sinking at least $10/month (often >$20 or more) into this game. Far more than what I would be paying for a subscription fee elsewhere. So, no, I do not feel like my investment was worth it if I could have saved all of that money and just joined when HOT comes out.
Let me play the base as a mule account and I could justify it at least. I would not choose to do it but at least I could justify it.
The HOT subforum explodes for a pretty obvious reason. I get all kinds of messages about my posts being moved to another thread due to merging. The forum slows to a crawl.
I do NOT envy the moderators today!

I really think they need to clarify this quickly.
For myself, I’ve got 2 accounts, meaning I’ve purchased the base game twice. I’ve also occasionally dumped real money into the gem store when I didn’t feel like converting gold. In short, I think I’ve been the model Anet customer.
The extra character slot(s) with the base expansion (not some “deluxe” edition) is the NUMBER ONE thing I’m looking for and want to know about. I don’t even mind that the expansion is 50 dollars (most expansions cost the same as the base game anyhow an there’s no monthly charge, so cool).
I will NOT buy the expansion on the hope of getting extra slots. I need to know ahead of time. Furthermore, If the expansion doesn’t come with any extra slots, I’ll simply not buy it period. I will instead, with unwavering certainty, walk entirely away from the game and take my real money gem store purchases with me. You might say Anet is big enough that they don’t care, and maybe that’s true. I write this all the same in the hopes that someone with Anet with real decision making power sees this and takes it into consideration.
Thanks for the great gaming up to now.
Same here. I probably would be spending less money if I played their competition instead, WOW. I dump at least 10$ (and usually much more) into the game every month. Buying gems to immediately change for gold. Buying the deluxe edition … TWICE (I wanted my mule account to have the same stuff as my main one). Converting around $30 of gems to get a commander tag. Bank slots, materials expansions, skins, outfits, on and on with the gem store. I have dumped MORE than enough into the game to feel upset that I am essentially getting less than people who have not put any money in.

Allow doing something like transfer my characters (and anything account-bound) to the new core game and I would be fine. Then I would have another core to play with. While it would be nice to transfer it to someone else to get them hooked I would not mind 5 more slots to play with.

Maybe they will allow us to have one address tied to the expansion and another to the core? Or at least the one we bought and the freebie have two accounts tied to them?
Many of us have alts for things like storage and stuff. While I do not need to buy the core yet again I would not turn down an extra core game if I have to pay for it to get more content anyway.
I do. That does not always work unless you spam join and get lucky.
If you are not partied up it does not help though. Which is a problem because sometimes something was about to happen you wanted to be there for it and you come back to a map where it is not about to happen.
I am starting to lose count of the times I popped into the mists for something and came back to a different server, whether I am partied up there or not.
What is the whole point of picking a server when you sign up if you get assigned to all sorts of different ones every time you step through a portal or log in? There is no realistic way I can arrange to meet friends inworld because there is a good chance we will not end up on the same server ny picking the same one.
You can say ‘that is only when there are overflow servers’ but that is pretty much all the time. All of the “servers” are listed as ful’ or very full (or whatever terminology they use) when you sign up.
I am not sure what their network architecture is but this is messed up.
Yay! Welcome to the game!
No problem. I was annoyed at what I saw last night: 4 commanders tagged up for the caledon wurm (when usually there are only 1 or 2 of us tagged in that map) so I detagged. I did tag up again when I moved to a pre area but that was so I could show people where to go and get some of them there. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they forgot it was on as there is no good reason to have 4 tags on top of each other.
In addition to helping there is something else I want to try: leading new people to doing slightly higher level content. Mobs that would overrun them by themselves but show them they are okay when they are in a group. It will give them the message that not soloing this game is a good thing when you can not do something by yourself.
Interestingly, it seems everyone has trouble with one of the things for teq … but not always the same one. For example, I kept failing at defending all 3 batteries but found the treasure and tail jump trivial.
Thank you!! Got to 80% map completion so almost got 1 of em yay
Yay!
You will find that finding the final area(s) is the most annoying part though. I have 2 zones that are forever cluttering my list of achievements I have mostly done because they each have one area left. Making that list next to useless since it only shows the top 3 items.
Some of them dont show up since they dont have a mark( point of interest vista waypont or heart) on map.
here is a good link to find those last areas
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Zone
Thanks, I knew it was on the wiki somewhere. It is too bad they do not at least have POIs there. Presumably if they are so important that they are named a POI would be only logical. You could also tell what areas you are missing too.
Nice! I was looking for a more organized way of helping new players then a commander tag and sending a mapchat asking if anyone needed help.

Additional Comments: I consider all of my characters mains and play them more or less the same amount of time unless they are on my alt anet account. Ohut is the one that is in low level zones the most though. All of them have their own specialties:
Kissa Suojelija (charr guardian, currently going for 100% map completion)
Lyhyt Insinööri (asura engineer, a jane of all trades)
Laatu Katti (all 70+ areas)
(apologies again about the name spellings, they are all Finnish, just use copy/paste)
I have my fingers crossed for soon as well. There is nothing new lately (well, I guess the LS if you are a rare creature that both likes it AND also has not done season 2 yet). I joined right after scarlet’s attack so the world seems sort of … static. What is a non-newbie pve player to do that is new other than find those last niggling places for explorer achievements? Dailies? Go places I have not been lately?
….could that be a charr tech themed guild hall?… Could it be that my dreams come true?…
I was looking at the one with the curved flat pathway. It reminded me of how the citadel is layed out … and orr.
The stream died yesterday and they did not come back so they put someone else on. They said they would put it on youtube but did not say what month they would do that.
Does naming pets create gem sales? No
Is the lack of pet naming causing a noticeable number of people to leave the game? No.ETA? Never.
I think you would find a LOT of rangers would buy gems just for that, making your argument invalid.
Would I buy them for every pet in my menagerie? I doubt it. I would be interested in it for my favourites at the right price though.
I did find the Caledon wurm funny tonight: 4 commander tags already so I stood down. I turned it on a few minutes before the pre started though to attract people to that area (initially there were just 2 of us).
I got it on my first teq fight. Just run behind teq and watch for other people doing it too.
Caledon forest is amazing to play through south to north as a new sylvari. My favorite experience of any map by far.
I will admit that metrica province is a bit more fun to just run around in as a level 80 tho. Seeing the asuran architecture juxtaposed with the lush jungle is incredible.
I agree with both. The music in Caledon Forest got me hooked on this game. I quickly got a feel for it between the calming music and low-level stuff there. Having a heart that was mostly playing with pups was a nice change of pace from a war game. Then I went and died somehow and when I was about to WP I noticed the text ‘a noble soul is healing you’ … I wound up crying that people actually looked out for each other in this game.
Now that I am not constantly on my toes about being killed in an instant by low-level monsters I can sit back and enjoy the scenery. I love snow (hey, I am half Finn) but the shiverpeaks strike me as a bit too quiet most of the time … almost like nobody goes there except for dailies and boss fights.
I consider orr meh. Unless you happen on the event train the only way to get wps on the far side of the straits (and beyond) is swim and hope nothing kills you until you get to a shore wp. When you are in the train it is almost TOO easy though. There is nothing in between. You can do some of one and some of the other but it feels like you are making it harder just to make it harder.
I never could get the appeal of DT. I just LOVE the SW though. Even if I was not there all the time I would just laugh at the dailies that require you to do 4 SW events as I get them for events I do not even remember being in.
That concept art and many more were already shown at PAX. http://imgur.com/a/tzJzD#KvEPRBf
Interesting. While it seems mostly asuran in concept I can see influences from the other 3 races as well. Think divinity’s reach, the black citadel, and a touch of the immensity of norn stuff. I just wish we had some better drawings to go on but hopefully it will be in tomorrow night’s patch.
In Second Life they do it with inventory links (they do not need to worry about skills and such). I would LOVE to see something like it.
pow ready for general PVE
pow ready for boss battles [fighting the megadestroyer with a melee weapon is usually not the best idea unless you like dying]
“oh look, Teq is on the horizon, now what skills and traits did I want?”
I admit is is a huge overkill but anet does not have a good way of saying you are there to answer questions for new users and help them with stuff.
Thanks, so far it has been luck of being in the right place at the right time.
So far I have 3 of them and just need the one in blue. Is there a timer or do I just wait for it to get to level 3 defenses and pact control?
Thank you!! Got to 80% map completion so almost got 1 of em yay
Yay!

Given we can only extrapolate from human clowns to other races …
I am not really sure what you are doing …
Diving doesn’t require taking your hands off anything or stopping. Are you trying to play with only one hand? I am pretty sure the devs assumed most of their customers will hand two.
The best way to dive uses a mouse to look dowm. My right hand is over the arrow keys, my left is over the numbers with occasionally hitting ‘f’ for whatever. To use the mouse I have to move one of them off the keyboard, presumably not the left.
Of course, if you use the mouse to navigate that is not a problem. Although it feels strange to me unless I am playing something first person all the time, which I regard as something strange for MMORPGs.
As I said, it would make much more sense if the dive down key does what it says on the box. I am sure I am not the only person who initially assumed it would do that.
I am guessing you plan on using dyes? It will make a clown look much easier.
Yes, it makes sense. I don’t see anything wrong with that :P
Well, others who join the map might be confused and think there’s some kind of event near your tag, but that’s the only problem I see that might happen.
Thanks. Yes, that is the problem, I do not want to be spamming map chat constantly,
