Forced Rezing in Group Boss Fights.

The entire situation is created by the players themselves. Teach your people to revive downed people instead of ignoring them.

That is not the experience I have in this game, in Open World content as well as Fractals. It’s rather the opposite, people run to resurrect downed players even if just killing the mob that downed player is hitting from the downed state only needs one more shot to allow rallying. I often think “omg, that is so nice, but it would really help me more if you just killed that trash mob I’m throwing daggers at.”

And people also drop everything and run to resurrect dead people, which makes no sense most of the time.

Yes, I am sure the times I have not rezzed new players think I am being mean. Meanwhile vets realize I saw the thing they were throwing stuff at was almost dead and it was MUCH more efficient for me to just kill it to help their rally/stop the danger rather than take myself out of action.

There is also the issue that because everyone can rez, GW2 PvE players often have it ingrained that if someone is down or dead they should stop and rez them. So dead players also “interfere” because people feel compelled to stop what they’re doing and rez them. Many times I have had the experience of waiting near the start of an event where I can see someone AFK (not necessarily a farmer) in a bad place who gets downed / killed over and over. And each time someone happens by and rezzes them.

I will never forget the one time someone went AFK in a REALLY bad place with all sorts of bling that showed they should know better (commander tag, ‘been there, done that’, whatever). After the second time when I was in the area and rezzed him without him moving I slapped on my own tag and at the next event specifically told people to ignore him.

How about avoiding corpses at all and reviving people while they are downed?

I revive people if they are downed but during a boss fight I see it as entirely optional. Yes, that works both ways. There are times I wished the person reviving me kept shooting at the boss rather than trying to rez me. Especially since there seems to be an obligatory ty/yw at the end when the best strategy is both backing off a bit (or even further for a full heal), hitting their heal skills, then returning to the fight a few seconds later.

I agree with the OP. Queen’s Jubilee etc. would be tons of fun. The other day, I was attacked for suggesting to bring events like the Festival of the Four Winds back, when my intention was merely to come up with an example to have more festivals during the year, even if it’s just “old ones” returning.

Yes, something like the Four Winds may be technically old but remember to anyone who joined in the past few years it is new. I think the argument was the airship crashed? I am reminded of a saying:

“Anything one author invents another can get out of.”

What is against, oh, a few survivors stumbling out of the jungle one day and a party being thrown to celebrate the occasion? Or just an event memorializing the crash?

People who are AFK don’t move, don’t they? Why not just boot the toon if they don’t move for more than 5 minutes? Of course it won’t stop bots if they move a bit, but it should make things a tad more obvious.

A 5 minute AFK timer? Do you realize how many false positives you would get?

I keep track of a lot of stuff on various spreadsheets while playing. Just because I have not jostled the mouse in 5 minutes has no bearing on if I am actively playing. Meanwhile someone who has a bot that knows to send some movement every 5 minutes gets a pass?

Agreed. I can spend an hour trying different dye combinations with different armor pieces to find something I like. I cant even see my character while looking at the hero and preview screens. It would be really annoying to have to constantly move my character during this process to avoid being kicked.

Like tapping a single key once every five minutes will really harm you. Especially if you consider the mouse as an input.

If excel is the front app then hitting the mouse or tapping a key will do nothing. Maybe I should set up an alarm every time I background the game?

If they keep to patterns they have established I will call the following things:

Story wrapping up Braham’s bit, maybe in the North.
- Eps 2 & 5 were in the Fire Islands, Eps 1 & 4 both followed the same storyline.

Very high odds there is an account-bound gateway to a core Tyria map.
- See Bitterfrost, this is the same team.

Zone item is gathered.
- Look at the pattern.

Ascended item(s) will CERTAINLY include an accessory.
- Look at how many zones sell each, it will not be a ring or a pendant.

A likely ascended item is the underwater mask.
- So far only one zone sells it which is a huge anomaly.

There is most probably a water area if there is a mask for sale.
- How else would they justify it?

What the story is is anyone’s guess, my focus is on the map. There have been clear patterns and since we know this will include at least the Bitterfrost team (but more epic) I would look to that for ideas.

Of course, they could toss a monkey wrench in and do 2 maps this time. One predictable and one a complete wildcard.

Draconis Mons is fairly easy to navigate. I mean, it is literally a spiral with two platforms.

The PoI being unclear what level they are on is a fundamental issue that is seen throughout the game – and not just on vertical maps. This is something ArenaNet really needs to work on (hero challenges are the same).

Where they are dark on the correct map level and light on the levels next to it is a step in the right direction. Not perfect, but at least it helps you a bit because you know it is not on your level. It is when things on the map/minimap do not do that that the icon is more of a hindrance than a help.

Again, I’m gonna add to this by reminding y’all that other games cough WoW cough BDO cough StarWars MMO cough just discard XP at max level, more or less, and they didn’t die of it.

(Yes, I know that BDO doesn’t technically discard it, it just hits the diminishing returns curve so hard that nobody is past 68 to 69 or whatever, and the next step will be exponentially longer than that. No rewards exist for grinding toward it though.)

So claiming that GW2 is unique in all the world, and here but only here, will players quit because they don’t get rewarded for their XP, is a hard sell and requires some convincing proof about why it’s different…

Apples to oranges. SOME players in the same game here are getting a benefit that other players are not. In those other games everyone is treated the same when it comes to an xp cap.

Sounds more like blame shifting.

Then you’re not following the problem. Its not one event that created this… its a string of decsisions (by Anet) that cascaded into a whole series of problem, and Anet doesn’t respond to adjustments fast enough to avoid long term issues.

Exactly. It is as if the US federal reserve changed interest rates by 10% (usually it goes up or down by like 1/2 a percent), increased the monetary supply by a factor of 2, oh, and immediately closed our borders to all imports and exports (including pending offshore payments) with no warning. Then sat on the situation for a couple decades without further changes. No matter what eventually happened the end result would be a fiscal nightmare scenario. Why anet thought a good idea was to do multiple things at the same time then watch the chaos ….. when clearly they can react faster if players are benefiting ….. is pure huh.

This is awful nightime lol. Im talking pitch black moon light

As a person with imperfect vision, I am glad our night times are not too dark. If they made night times darker I would need extra brightness which would be a pain in the butt to change back at daytime. Ugh. If they ever going to change this (probably not), then the amount of darkness we get during night should be optional at the graphics settings or something. In fact, I would like an option for 100% daytime, it’s better for my eyes.

Yes, I once made an offhand comment that starting a fight in the darker area of the bitterfrost woods at night probably was not always the best idea. I got the ‘get gud’ comment even when I pointed out that the reason could be a player’s vision. Which is why I would want to see the cycle itself continue to be implemented server-side but how that cycle is interpreted to the environmental model (standard light cycle, consistent lighting, variations by zone) is something that is selected client-side.

If Ranger pets lose the ability to self-acquire targets that attack them or me, or the ability to target a separate enemy than the Ranger, then Rangers need to receive an across the board 40% damage increase in all game modes to compensate.

I agree (although the number may be a bit high). If I am surrounded by a mob I want my pet to be able to attack something attacking me while I am busy chopping down another monster. The balance for the ranger is partly for the fact you have a pet so if the pet gets a severe nerf those points should be reallocated to the ranger.

While the profession being nerfed for the pet I agree with the current tradeoff. In an area where there are frequent mobs and you might be bending down to do farming (like a berry run in BFF) I want something that will play defense for me. Out of my 15 characters most of my berry farming are from professions with some form of a pet.

Because some love pitchblack night doesnt mean everyone does.

This. Night could indeed be a bit darker than it currently is, but not much. Pitchblack or anything in that direction is an absolute no-go, because it ruins gameplay for many while satisfying the RP or whatever wishes of a few.

This is why I would prefer to see it done like in SL. Have the actual cycle on the server, as well as a default setup (noon=full light, midnight=full[or near] dark). Then in the prefs you would be able to override those defaults. Want noon lighting all the time and everywhere? No problem! Want the normal cycle everwhere but Orr which will be some spooky lighting most of the time? Sure! While it would take some programming all the actual lighting/shading would be part of the graphics processing on your client.

Second Life has a good cycle too. Plus you can change atmospheric effects client-side as needed (a sepia sunset may look awesome in one area but just ugly somewhere else). GW2 seems to go between midday and afternoon most of the time so when I encounter somewhere that does actual night in this game (like VB or bitterfrost) I wind up doing a double take.

IMO, the real solution is to remove the ability of pets to attack on their own. Other professions do not have that ability and I frankly don’t understand why necros and rangers do. It’s not necessary for the other professions so I don’t see why it’s necessary for necros and rangers.

It’s so they defend you if you’re attacked (and defend themselves).

They don’t need to automatically defend if you are present at your computer. If something attacks you, you defend yourself and your pet attacks what you are attacking.

Actually, yes, they do. When a mob surrounds me I can focus on what is in front of me and my pet can get whatever is hitting me from behind.

I will say it again. The balance of the ranger class accounts for this. Take it away and you have nerfed all rangers, not just the ones taking advantage of things.

Hmm, in the 2 most recent profession-specific farms the issue was necros and engineers. So it would seem that rangers have been playing by the rules anyway?

From my understanding of how pets (I’m including minions in the generic “pets”) work, they don’t attack something behind you without direction. AFAIK, the first thing you attack, they also attack. If you switch targets they might continue to attack their target. I think it depends on what mob is doing damage, or more damage, or something.

You are saying that when you get into a fight, your pet will automatically attack something behind you that you are not attacking?

It is probably on the wiki but by ‘defend’ I assumed if something attacked me that would up it on the pet’s target priority list. Occasionally I have turned around and my pet was in a fight behind me and if it was always fighting with whatever I was attacking that should never be the case.

If it is ‘whatever monster is doing the most damage gets the priority’ the one attacking your back will probably always win out in terms of a priority. Whatever is in front of me is attacking me through a hail of my outgoing attacks. Whatever is attacking my back has no such impediment. In a mob the 2 should be roughly equal. Yes, there might be a vet but it has equal odds to be on either side.

I guess my point doesn’t depend on whether your pet is attacking something behind you. What I am proposing is that if you are just standing there not responding to an attack, your pet shouldn’t respond either. Standing there not responding to an attack is something that someone would do while AFK. If you respond to an attack, that should “activate” the pet to also respond in whatever manner it would normally respond.

It might come down to terminology. I am responding to the attack in front of me but I am not responding to the thing behind me also attacking me. Is your proposal that my pet could still defend my back (which I am not actively doing anything about) or not?

I’m proposing that the pet is inactive unless you press a key / mouse button. If you do that then the pet does whatever it normally does (defend your back, etc.)

Thanks, that would work then. The best thing is to have the timeout ignore autoloot though so someone does not get kicked for standing a mo at a merchant.

True. From a version control standpoint in in not unusual to see companies deprecate older versions (in this case that would be core-only) so they do not have a nightmare of having too many different things being running. It would be one thing if all of the things in an expansion were limited to one area or not but that is not the case (like gliding and autoloot) and there is no reason to suspect they will stop doing that. For example, it has been strongly rumored we are getting a mastery people have been asking for for years and you KNOW people will not want to only have it in the new zones if that rumor is true.

How is removing something that is not necessary “cutting off the arm”? No one has yet given a reason why pets need to be able to attack independently of player action.

I just did. If I walk into a mob (like bitterfrost) I want something to have my back while I concentrate on what is in front of me. Note that I am not talking about being afk. How is this any different from, oh, a small ad-hoc squad doing a berry run except that only one player (me) gets the berries?

Also note that rangers are a medium armor class. I count on my pet pretty often.

Breath of Wild has a 3D map for a few sections of the game. While this exact one probably wouldn’t mesh well with GW2, it’s a good start in a direction that they could go for those that prefer 3D maps for vertical maps.

hm.. asuran hologaphic 3D maps, while they would look fancy, I think it’s a huge waste of time for what little resources anet has to spend on the game
I say.. just learn how to read maps, they’re not that difficult

Yeah. That’s my take on the whole thing too as I haven’t had issues using the existing maps to navigate.

????

There are a LOT of things that show up on multiple layers of the map. On multi-layered regions I actually find the map more of a hindrance than a help.

“Run down here and take a left to the HP and …. oops, that path that intersects it is actually at a different level and the map did not show me that to get to the intersection I need to be able to move up and over the boulder that is in the way. Yup, this map sure is a help!”

I also will point out again that any profession can wear 6 ogre runes and have a pet most of the time. If someone complains they do not want to give up their rune slots? Well, rangers feel the same way about giving up our pets. As to solving AFK farming, well, some people will always take whatever is the easiest option to make money. If AFK farming is of particular concern to you for some reason look at why they are doing it and address that cause rather than nerfing the entire profession. For example, if leather was not needed as much you would see less people afk farming it ….. although they will go to whatever is next.

Before HOT and LS3 the thing was SW, especially the chest farm runs. Should anet have taken away the chests?

Say you do nerf pets/minions/turrets ….. cheaters will just use what is the next easiest mechanic.

If you read my post you are responding to, I don’t say remove pets, I say “remove the ability of pets to attack on their own”. Sure it’s handy if you have to go to the bathroom and something attacks you in game there’s a chance the pet will protect you. But what is the actual gameplay, non-afk use of the pet being able to attack on its own (i.e. not in response to you attacking something or directing it to attack)?

You are removing the whole point of pets. If I needed more of an attack to what I was fighting I would choose a class with better stats. With a ranger I have something that can watch my back for me.

Please, stop abusing the farm options.

Is there some compelling reason that players require rewards from targets their minions kill with zero input from the player? It really doesn’t seem worth the constant gripe-fests on the forums and wasted development resources attempting to stop people from doing something that your game allows them to do! Just kill it already.

Yes, the AI that is with you is part of how the class is balanced. It would be like waking up one day and finding out some major mechanic in your favourite class was gone with nothing to replace it.

Yes, telling us an object is x meters from us does no good if we do not know the y component.

How to Deal With AFK Farming

IMO, the real solution is to remove the ability of pets to attack on their own. Other professions do not have that ability and I frankly don’t understand why necros and rangers do. It’s not necessary for the other professions so I don’t see why it’s necessary for necros and rangers.

No. Just no.

Toggleable, yes please. I always feel like I am wasting the boost if I do not do an activity that uses it the entire time it is active.

LW Season 1 had the best story

Sometimes I wonder if I am the only person for whom the non-instanced (ie, cooperative and open world) parts of the story are the best part. Unfortunately those parts are also hard to bring back when the open world or various mechanics change.

By joining in 2014 I also missed season 1 and would love to see it. Unfortunately I have resigned myself that watching vids and getting summaries is the closest I will get.

Additions to Material Storage

(Programmers and database managers will be quick to point out the 137 flaws in the above analogy — that’s fine. I’m not trying for a good match, just to point out that “that sounds easy” is only easy to type, not to actually manage.)

Generally I phrase it as someone in another field knows as much about what it will take to do something in mine (programming) as I do in theirs (assuming I have no experience in it). Also the sooner I have the COMPLETE picture of what they want for an end product (not how they want to do it or just what they want now) the better as a perfectly valid response to a limited answer may make it harder to add in the pieces to get to the final step.

How does that dead map feel? Now there’s no leather farm at all.

Yeah, those afk engis made the entire map so lively, didn’t they?

I am glad I got (almost) everything done on that map that I wanted to accomplish. Oh well, I guess I was never planning on completing that part of LS3 anyway.

Now I can just sit back and let 3 shards/day come in from my home instance.

primordus vs jormag in LA

While I’d love to see them physically duking it out, I’d rather they not do it in LA. That city has been destroyed so many times it’s going to become a running joke like Kenny from South Park.

You mean you actually LIKE the current layout and how it looks? It is not a city, it is a theme park.

The racial cities, particularly DR, are more my idea of what a city in this world should be like.

Season 3 Episode 6 Release Date?

July 18th at 9:15:34AM pacific time.

I would put money on this. Maybe not time of day but definitely date.

Well, I am putting unbound magic on it. After the beginning of July I will start hoarding it so that I will have at least 11,000 on release day (10 for the new node and 1 for the portal scroll).
