I don’t hate the system, but I do see the flaws in the system. It’s best suited to players who want to do the story first or explore as they do the story. It’s troublesome for players who prefer to do exploration first and then the story.

Which is also why I hated the LS3 zones being story locked. I play GW2 as the ‘play your way’ system it was marketed as and prefer to do the story whenever, which is never on patch day. I look up on the wiki and such for the information I need when they do stuff like this but it makes the story pretty pointless rather than being something I have yet to do and have no idea about.

I like to think of HOT as a test. Some things were hits (how did we ever do without gliding) while other things were real dogs (looking at you ‘adventures’). Many more things got mixed reviews but it produced a lot of feedback of how it could be better. Probably their biggest oops if focusing too much on systems over content, however now that the systems are in place they can get back to producing a lot of content.

As to cost? Meh. Trivial in the long term as it is not a subscription-based game. Ask yourself, for whatever package/sale you bought it at did you get the same amount of enjoyment as that amount of time in a subscription game?

The Morrowind upgrade for ESO was almost as expensive as the full HoT game at launch (40€ for Morrowind vs. 45€ for HoT), while the full ESO+Morrowind package was considerably more expensive (60€ if I’m not mistaken).

That’s how it usually works. $50 is the standard price for B2P expansions.

If GW2 was like other MMOs, HoT would have been $50 by itself while the core game would have remained at $25. A year in, they would have bundled in the core game for free, then later dropped the price to $25 to repeat the cycle with the next expansion.

So, everyone is kitten because Anet’s decided it’s not worth bilking new players $25 on a less-than-full-experience product?

The problem with Heart of Thorns was a lack of content. I don’t think the new Xpack’s going to have that problem.

Yes, we already know they focused on the technical aspects in HOT to give them a framework for future expansions. Hopefully anet heard people loud and clear about what they liked and did not like, chief among them was a desire for more content. On the PR side …. do not announce an expansion almost a year before it will be released. I think we will be pleasantly surprised by expansion 2.

I am wondering how they like gathering and crafting.

If you are ‘done’ with a map and do not want to do it again do what has been suggested and do another level-appropriate map. Another idea is just do some variation: how about re-doing some of the events slightly differently?

Can we do something about mastery points?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Menadena.7482

Menadena.7482

Actually there is forcing, when the xp gets to the max and you have no points to spend at the moment. An excess of 30 or so is not enuff for up to 186 points to spend. Considering that less than 20% of the material will be considered enjoyable by the players, and that the players will differ on what is enjoyable to them, so at best anet can provide 50% of quality material, then there should be a bonus of MP’s of about 94 points.

Yes, you can do that but read my post.

On the first day there is not a lot known about the new map, particularly complex ones like Draconis Mons. People are curious so you will most likely get to exploring (and/or doing the story). Before you know it you will have all, or at least most, of the xp you need for the new mastery.

It’s more than enough buffer.

Did you make up that “fact” about 20% of players?

Excess mastery points should not be based on what players prefer to play as that defeats the purpose.

No it doesn’t, as long as they are doing enjoyable (to them, at least) content, they will stay engaged in the game. 20% of (enjoyable) content…. Or they could just take out MP collection itself, altogether…

Again, where are you getting this 20% from as it looks like you’re just making it up to support your argument.

Having so much of an excess of MP in the game makes it pointless and defeats the original purpose.

It does defeat the purpose, as it is not needed and is terrible game design. It starts to devolve the game into a niche game.

It defeats the purpose as the mastery points get players to experience most of, if not all, of the expansion content.

The XP requirement already takes care of that. Yes, you can do it on another map but presumably you will want to explore the new shiny a bit anyway.

Meanwhile, you know next to nothing about most MPs on the new map. Odds are you know of some on other maps you have not grabbed yet though.

The XP requirement does not do that. You could skip the first three maps and go directly to DS to farm XP and max your masteries.

You could even level them with only going into the HoT maps once to unlock them and then max them on the LS3 maps. The original leather farm provided a lot of XP that was only second to the lab farm.

Free accounts do not get login rewards.

I didn’t know that. Just proves that ArenaNet doesn’t like the idea of multi-boxing to gain advantages :P

Now, I wonder if some people decide to just purchase another account instead of 3 additional character slots. It’s cheaper if you don’t pay with ingame gold-gems, and you get 5 slots.

It does not say one thing or the other about multiboxing. As I said somewhere the other day what is the real difference between my multiboxing with my VM and logging out of the client to log in my other account? Beyond the second being more of a nuisance that is.

I actually bought a second account, before free accounts existed, to play with different builds. Since my main account eventually wound up with 15 characters I did not really need another account for that so I mostly use it now for login rewards and to forge major runes/sigils.

It’s a “one pay wall” package.

Pay one price, get the current game.

Yes but they could do something like Elder Scrolls Online did.

They offered the expansion + the core game for full price (same price the base game had been at release) and then just the expansion on it’s own for a discounted price.

So if you’re a new player you just pay once and get the full current game* but if you’re an existing player you don’t feel like you’re being charged twice for the stuff you’ve already got.

*Minus DLC in ESO/Living Story in GW2.

Of course that was for vanilla. I was looking into it (I decided not to pursue it after getting it) and since it would not give me gold I figured to buy a discounted version of gold and get the upgrade if I liked the base game.

Sorry if it has been asked before, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.

My question is, will the next expansion be discounted if you already own Heart of Thorns?

Since HoT has been stated to be included as part of the next Expansion, will it be discounted if you already own HoT? Since otherwise, you would be paying the same amount as someone who didn’t buy HoT, but for significantly less additional content.

You can NOT be serious? We do not even know the name of the thing and already you are asking details about it?

Typically (but not always) it is cheaper to buy an upgrade to a program than the full thing from 0. That is no guarantee though as there are also counterexamples. Basically, wait until anet says something.

Whenever people cheat the system to get rewards without effort, it affects everyone else, especially in a game (like GW2) that has a completely global economy. The more bots there are, the more coin flows into the economy, along with other forms of wealth. That affects how much gold there is for bots to buy the shinies they sell on the black market and the price we get for own own loot.

That’s the part that affects you or I, regardless of whether we are concerned about the act of AFK farming or of botting.

That’s all a bit esoteric for my level of involvement in this game, though I can see how those who are much more involved in the economy than I would be annoyed at the skewing by botters. However, for the way I play, it’s not that big of a thing.

So, no, it really doesn’t hurt my enjoyment, but again, breaking the rules is not cool and I report bots when I notice them, I just don’t get too bent out of shape about the whole thing.

Also, I don’t really get the benefit of gold farming in this came since there is an official way to buy gold for real money, unlike WoW back when I played it.

You do not need to be deep into the economy for it to have an effect on you. When I started it was ‘a gold for xyz? wow!!!’. Now it is ‘300 gold for a commander tag? hold my beer’. That is how much it has changed in a couple of years.

Well, I do not drink beer but you get the idea.

Actually, I have been tracking costs and how fast you gather the relevant items. Even though winterberries seem to be an anomaly when you break it down to UM costs it is about the same progress to the item per day. Assuming 1 character per day on average you will get 20-30 of the zone item if you stay in the zone longer than a fast run and do all of the dailies there (50-75 for winterberries). Given the drop rate your average in BF will be lower but not impossible for it to be the same as the other zones. Even just doing the home node will give you 100 of an item in 33 days (so I do not stress as much about getting to LS3 zones now, UM is my limiting condition at the moment).

Which is a long winded way of saying a ring, pendant, or backpack from BF is roughly the same time investment as other LS3 zones. If just relying on the home nodes for all of them even closer.

Fortunately ascended trinkets are account bound rather than soul bound. If you get a range of the better stat sets you can always swap things later. I would still recommend doing a best guess of what stats you need though as swapping everything around can be a nuisance.

I run a minion necro, and I never EVER AFK farm. But, now I can’t even survive there, because my minions get taken out almost immediately. Even when I’m running full tilt, they’re blasted because they don’t know how to dodge or move out of the blast radius.

Please have the artillery take out minions that haven’t moved recently, and turrets, but not active players meat (and bone) shield.

This! Because of obvious violators people now hate anyone who uses a pet/minion. Since those professions are balanced around you having an AI thing with you as well any character that uses such is winding up at a disadvantage, whether using it as intended or not.

Why are you making up things that Anet “might do”, and what Anet really means, based on zero evidence?

Do you really think ArenaNet appreciate the fact that players run a dozen accounts at the same time and siphon the created gold to the main account? Of course they don’t say so publicly, because there is nothing they can do to prevent that happening. And it’s not as public as the Engineer farm, nobody sees these people doing it.

At day 22 of the login rewards you get 8 Mystic coins = 8 gold. If you log in with a dozen other accounts that you don’t even play (and why not, free accounts, right?), and send them over to your main account, you get 96 extra gold.

I have seen people in other games with 40+ accounts. The problem is real, but not as visible as that ugly Engineer farm.

Asking for evidence makes no sense here. What would convince you that this exists and that no publisher in the world likes it?

Free accounts do not get login rewards. I have 2 paid accounts, neither one was the lowest-cost game package either. I highly doubt anet cares if I login them both at the same time or one after the other.

I don’t personally have anything against people who want to play like the engi-farmers. It’s not like they can actually walk away from their computers for long periods of time like the actual afkers (ranger & necro). Those are the people who are really exploiting the game and should be punished.

I actually prefer my rangers, necro, and ogre runes when doing winterberry runs. Not for AFKing, to have something guard my back while I concentrate on what is in front of me and the winterberry bushes.

The problem is not a specific profession. The problem is AFKing and getting loot. A solution to all of this would not be having loot drop if you are AFK (although that is easier said than done).

Menadena.7482

The only things I don’t like about the current system is that falling damage reduction takes up a slot and some traits are OP’d (some underpowered). Other than that, I think it works well:

  • It forces us to make important choices about the sort of build we want.
  • It’s gives us some interesting alternatives.
  • It’s simple to use and simple to unlock the trait lines.

Frankly, I don’t care if it’s called “elite spec” or “alternative” or … it’s just jargon and, as in most of civilization, jargon doesn’t stand up to careful scrutiny of the word choice.

Fortunately, while I like having falling if I do something stupid, it is less of a concern now that we can glide in most of the open world.

I agree with the general idea though. We only have 3 trait lines. If we take an elite line we only have 2 custom lines (so will always lose SOME ‘must have it’ thing) but if we stay as the base class we have 3 custom lines. I am not sure of the best solution though. Maybe always have 3 custom lines and any elites go in a 4th?

I’m sure something is going to be done to stop BFF as well. For now I just make the point of reporting every single AFK farmer on my daily berry run.

Also, none of these zones have any value to the game beyond their story and maybe the odd item someone wants, if not for these farms.

If they’re not supposed to have that, why even have the zone be permanent? :s

Yes, I have no problem with, oh, “earn 5 levels to get the new zone’s mastery”. What holds me up is “oh, also get (or have) 5 of these points which could be easy things or hard ones”.

Yes, and those 5 points have nothing to do with the xp you earned.

True, for the spidey mastery one of the points came from the commune in Bitterfrost in the mouth of the svanir statue. I explored around Draconis Mons for the xp. Which thing was more relevant? One has nothing to do with the other beyond them both being part of LS3.

Yes, I am glad I got the HOT mastery points I wanted (I assume the next expansion will use a 3rd type) because it will be next to impossible for players to get ones that are tied to metaevents.

Random thought: pay up some gold and you can get a commander tag. Buy HOT and with CT masteries you can get an apple tag. Why not give everyone a small dot on the minimap/map (like for your allies)? You would see if a map was busy and where people were concentrated.

They won’t. HoT will be bundled with the next expac at no additional cost, but it won’t be given away for free.
Or at least that’s the current Anet policy, and nothing they did suggests they might change it (especially seeing as it would be of no benefit to them).

Have they actually said one way or the other? Remember we have no history to go on, this will be the first time a GW2 expansion is released when there is another out in the wild.

Me? If I had to guess I would guess the other way actually. When they were selling HOT what happened? Their existing content went FTP showing they knew the $$ was in the new stuff but they needed the old stuff on computers for it to work. From a programming point of view it is also MUCH easier if everyone is always on 2 releases rather than on n! (or is that n!-n) releases.

I asked to exchange the tools I purchased and pay the difference. I was advised, "The Gathering Infinite Basic Pack you purchased from the gem store greatly exceeds our allowed timeframe for gem refunds. "

I don’t buy anything for looks. I buy bank slots, shared inventory slots, Living World Chapters and things that help me play the game. I am on a limited income and must save up for the things I want. For me, the Infinite Tools where convenient and I don’t have to be concerned with carrying a back up set of tools

I’ve been trying to get unbound magic to get ascended trinkets and back. A partial refund and a refund that must be used immediately in the store was mentioned. Great ideas!

(edited for grammar and spelling)

I hear you. I would even be fine if the solution was to send them to a second account that you owned. Not that my other account does much gathering. She is mostly login rewards and mystic forge but at least it would feel like I was doing SOMETHING with the tools. The idea of equipping them on another character is pointless. If I wanted to do gathering with that character I would want to use the UM tools anyway.

It is already bad enough that they tie mastery points to the things. A chest. More than that and it is no longer ‘some people like them, some people do not’.

For me that reads like: “I don’t like the content so noone should get decent rewards.”
If you don’t like it. Fine. Arguing with mastery points gets old. There are more than enough mastery points you can get. Removing the ones from the JP will give you nothing. You just take away from other players.
You may complain about things like the tokens in the ember bay JP. But don’t argue about things that are easily replaced because they are redundant. Mastery points are already redundant. There are more than you need and they keep coming.

As I said if you do the extra content (the JP in this case) you are more than welcome to a chest. Fill it with exotics for all I care. Just do not lock content you pretty much HAVE to do for many things (vistas, map completion, etc) behind a JP.

As to mastery points, no to your view on them, just no. How would you feel if EVERY mastery point was locked behind different content you hated? Yes, there are a few MPs above what you need to level out everything but it does not take much content you do not like (adventures, JPs, whatever) to suddenly mean it is impossible to get enough MPs. I am so-so about that, I prioritized the masteries rather than feel I had to do all of them, but do not like the precedent of tying optional content to what is de facto required content.

Agreed – there should be more darker eye colors available by default. ALSO, natural hairstyles for kinky hair. Right now there are some dreads for norn women and female charr, a cheesy afro for male non-sylvari, and… that’s it. Nothing for female humans at all.

I tried making a black character once and the result in-game looked nothing at all like what the character creator looked like. I wound up having to use head armor that covered her face because the result looked more like a caricature than something serious.

However you’ll be missing chapters 1-4 of the L.W. season 3 I believe, but it isn’t that hard to earn the gold for it, just with the log in rewards.

Bzzt. Nope. When you own the base game you unlock LS3 just by logging in to your account, even if you do not have HOT at the time. For example, my second account just has the base game but should have all of LS3 available if they give us base accounts HOT when they start selling the 2nd expansion.

There’s nothing wrong with niche content in this game, except for the fact that ANet too often makes niche content matter towards things like meta-achievements or collections. Niche content rewards (because there have to be rewards or no one bothers after the first time or three) should not be part of reward structures for overall play. They should be intrinsic to the niche content.

Exactly. If it were just a matter of a chest at the end of a JP I would be fine with that. I could continue to ignore JPs and the people that liked them could continue with them, but that is not the case. Often you need to do some central Tyria JPs to get map completion. Even vistas, which should be easy, are usually a low level JP.

It is already bad enough that they tie mastery points to the things. A chest. More than that and it is no longer ‘some people like them, some people do not’.

Can we do something about mastery points?

Yes that too, when I see the word adventures, I’m thinking more of a mini-dungeon, than I am thinking of mobile phone games.

We can only hope they learned their lesson and we will not see them again. Or if we do they will not be tied to something like the mastery system.

I was practically cheering when we saw the first LS3 map and there was not an adventure icon in sight. Going back to my earlier comment I would love to see masteries reworked though, like losing all that xp if you run out of points.

I bought the unbreakable tools (the unskinned ones) a few months ago. I never had done much harvesting but after it became clear I would need to do a lot in LS3 I decided it was worth it. Right after that, before I even had a chance to use them (I was still using up what was equipped) I realized the UM tools were worthwhile so they just sat in 3 shared slots and got almost no use. Cue the new unlimited UM tools, which I bought. Now it is too late to return the original tools or even give them to an alt (I asked). I would happily have paid for a UM upgrade and foregone the animations.

Again, why can’t you give Account-bound tools to an alt?

What would be the point of that? To say I can do it? My other characters have a choice to gather with the standard unbreakable tools or ones with an effect that ALSO gives them UM. Why on earth would I ever not just open up my inventory window and do the 3 clicks to switch tools?

If UM was completely useless then we are just talking about the effect but that is not the case.

I have no real issue with the new unlimited tools. I can get why somebody might be annoyed (to put it lightly) if they bought a set of unlimited tools just a week ago or so, but if you bought them months or even years ago, you probably got your money’s worth. And there’s still plenty of people who buy tools without bonuses – looks are also important, you know!

Actually, I bought unbreakable tools earlier in the season and no, I did not get my money’s worth from them. I bought them early enough that I could not get a refund (yes, I asked) but right after buying them I realized limited-charge UM tools were better. So basically I have a set of 3 tools that have nearly not been used that I can not do anything with. Not even send to an alt!

Why can’t you use the Unlimited Gathering Tools on an alt?

Do you mean alt character or alt account? If the latter they are account bound and anet will not let me gift them to my other account. If the former ….. that is basically leaving money (via UM) on the table.

It seems part of the confusion is solo v group. I highly doubt many people are 100% one or the other. It is more about where you fall between those two extremes.

Even if I had infinite karma (which I do not, I keep buying things with it) I would consider it worth it. On average, my characters would typically have at least 10 slots taken up with UM tools. It is like I got 8 bag slots, which costs more than the tools.

Mostly solo and just dynamically teaming up for big events. With a laid back guild though so we can either guild chat or team up for things like instances and specific HPs.

How to get gear in guild wars

As the last piece you can look for an ascended backpack. Last time I’ve checked, backpacks had the worst stat-gain / money-spent ratio. You don’t need to bother with an aqua breather. Even playing without one is completely viably, since ANet has given up on underwater content and combat.

Bitterfrost has probably changed that, especially if you have LS3 home nodes and nothing else to spend the unbound magic/berries on. As to the aquamasks, get at least exotics (although I think it is in the level-up and/or boost maybe?) so you have something to stick the 6th armor upgrade on as your helm will disappear underwater.

Hey everyone, Im new to the game and was wondering if you guys know how to get pink/purple gear the fastest? I have full level 80 boost gear which is ascended which I assume isn’t that good. Any help would be great!

The level 80 boost (80 is the max) will give you all the level rewards so you will have exotics after it. If you want something different (a different set of stats maybe) you can grind for it or just buy gold with your credit card/paypal.

Ascended (pretty much the same as legendary except for skins) is not hugely better. If you want it though it is gold and time.
