The only important things are the green star and the red and orange crosshair / cross thing which is usually a follow quest.

red and orange crosshairs?

From what I have seen inworld lately you may need to wait until SAB finishes (assuming nothing else is going on). Maybe you will have better luck in LFG but when I have randomly gone to many maps there has been noticeably less people than before SAB.

I generally find that after a few years with one game I burn out on it. To avoid that I wanted to add a second game that looked like it would work out as a secondary game. Unfortunately I found a couple of no-go things. I have worked out how to partially mitigate those two issues but have yet to test if the solutions are acceptable compromises.

There not always a dynamic event around to do.

True, but hopefully the person who is showing others around knows the signs when there will be one soon. Even if you do not know the exact things around that heart if there is not something out-of-the-ordinary (like NPCs talking) go map some more waypoints and keep your ear to the ground. There are also exact times for the low level bosses and their pres.

Most hearts (even if they do not list it) have as a progress method killing attacking mobs. You and the people you are helping can just join in a dynamic event near it and pretty much the same thing that you want will happen. Your other party members will get credit for your kills as long as they got a blow or two in before the thing died (gear down if things are dying too fast). You can do the same for whatever creature needs to be killed in that area as well, but events are the much faster way to advance hearts.

Glider altitude indicator desperately needed

As has been pointed out z information is easy but that is not what you want. What you really need is the delta between your current z and the z of the first item you will intersect. Given items under you may be moving it is not as easy as looking up what is at the highest z under you at your x,y either. It is one of those cases where a human eye/brain is doing deceptively many more calculations than you think.

What I do is fall a little ways then deploy my glider for a few seconds. Then turn off my glider so it can keep recharging and repeat. By doing this I fall a huge distance but according to the game it was only a short distance (rightly it seems to not calculate over the highest z when you do this, I assume your relative velocity when you hit the ground is what matters and this procedure minimizes that).

How do you even get that many buffs? In my time playing gw2, I’ve never gotten enough buffs to even push beyond the boundary of my elite skill, and I’ve been playing since beta weekend three before vanilla launch.

It certainly seems like a UI design issue and should be resolved, but I’m wondering how it’s even possible to get that many things.

Maybe the size of my skills are too small? (Can’t check cause that’s my life right now)

That was pretty much what I was wondering! In all my time wandering around Tyria I have yet to encounter more than maybe 10 unplanned buffs to add before something expired. If I managed to have more buffs than screen real estate I would consider that very lucky. It is like complaining a day is too nice.

Signets, heroes banner, food, utility, and then using candy corn gobbler can easily generate a ton of effects on you, and that doesn’t account for any traits that apply an effect.

I agree you can have a lot but normally the only ones you run into are a hero’s banner (or a few banners for individual buffs), some food (usually one, but call it 2 if one is a utility) and maybe a drink and/or something like a bonfire. Buffs from items you had not planned on encountering are hardly the majority of the buffs you can get.

That makes it significantly more annoying to use in time sensitive conditions, aka pvp rotations.

I know it is just a workaround but is there a button on your mouse you can program to do it?

While you may think you are doing better because you have better equipment in reality you are doing better because you are more used to the game. For example, you are just used to knowing the fastest way to complete a heart (which is often by doing whatever dynamic event spawns next to it). I would suggest taking that as an opportunity to share the knowledge with them. You will probably still finish fast because they are not used to game mechanics but they will be much faster than if tossed into the pool sans instructions.

Sharing hearts is probably no small task to implement. What you can do is explore as a party and do dynamic events near hearts. A lot of the hearts will take care of themselves for each of you at about the same rate.

sigh One more time. Whether permission to use the gate was someone saying it or an item does not really make a difference. Basically, you do an instance and get access. In one that gate access is soulbound and in the other account bound.

Note that the other characters on my account did not do the chapter 3 instance so why should they have access to the gate? Other players exist out there that exist that did not do it so why should their characters be denied, right? After all some of us have access. In lore there is no difference if a character is played by one character or another.

Both chapter 3 and hot set the precedent. Once one character on the account can use a gate all characters on the account can use a gate. So why did chapter 4 break precedent?

question about hero points

You didn’t need any of Core Tyria’s hero points after the trait rework.

Before it shipped, the plan was that you received 400 points from leveling, but needed an extra 65 points to fully unlock your core specs.

Yep, I remember that, I remember making sure I had 65 ready to go on each of my alts.

Same here. I had a few ready to go with 80 just in case. I was pretty upset when they announced 400 because I have 15 characters (and obviously HP trains were not running yet).

True, I was thinking of that as generic advice though to test for showstoppers before you had an investment in it. Like other people that would play with the OP but were not inworld yet. In general I would say you will wind up spending less than a subscription game. Yes, you will buy unlimited tools and such a lot your first year so pretty much on par with a sub game then but after that you already have what you need so significant expenses will only come with expansions. My major single expense has been character slots and I do not foresee leveling again until there is a new race and/or base profession.

or.. oooor.. hear me out..

or.. you could actually play the game and unlock the content in it’s intended way: playing the story..

or is playing the story suddenly a bad thing in a game?

Why is getting to the map without the story a bad thing?

In Core, I can reach Orr without the story. In HoT, I can reach Dragon’s stand without HoT’s story. What’s special about the three of the four new zones that I’m forced to do the story on every toon?

I’d be more supportive if the gating was limited to whether the story is unlocked, since that’s partly a business decision.

What I REALLY find confusing is Doric. Characters that have not done the story (even if you have the scroll) can not enter it through either of the gates. You can in Bitterfrost though.

Because you need to be given authorization to go through the gate which is part of the living story.

I forget the wording but you need permission for Winterfrost as well. Yet none of your characters can use the gate from frostgorge until someone has and afterwards all of your characters can.

You don’t need permission for that map. It’s tied to having Koda’s Flame which is account bound.

The maps are locked as it’s probably easier to do this with the story to keep those without it out. There are very cheap portal scrolls that give get other characters into the maps.

Thanks but having an item and having permission amount to pretty much the same thing in game terms. A character that did not do the bitterfrost story did not get the flame and a character that has a scroll for doric did not get permission to enter. Why should one be tied to the account and the other the character?

Yes, portal scrolls are cheep for the utility. The only one I have not bothered to get was bloodstone and that was because I did not have any UM saved up.

You missed the part when I said the Flame was account bound.

No, I did not miss it. Why should it be an account bound item where the ‘item’ (permission, but the same thing really in terms of game mechanics) is soulbound? Even in terms of lore it does not make a lot of sense to deny you to use the gate once you have been on the other side of it. Until anet says otherwise I am considering one or the other bugged as there is no reason for them to be different.

Feel free to call it bugged. If you followed the story, you’d see why they were different.

So if you get 100 widgets – 50 are account bound, 50 are soulbound – you do not consider it a bug? Since there were two teams obviously both took 2 different approaches and did not notice the conflict. Before you go ‘but, but, PERMISSION’ I will point out the other characters on my account were not given the torch either, it does not matter one jot how your first character got to the zone.

Every zone has had account bound scrolls to allow your other characters to access it. From that I am guessing the bitterfrost team had it correct – that gates from an adjacent zone should be accessible across your account.

And again. You’re missing the reasoning behind it. I suggest replayed the episodes up to the point that you can access to the maps. With each episode, pay close attention to how you got access.

In all 4 so far the character was given access (words and items varied, but that covers all 4) not the player. The other characters got access via another means (999,999 times out of 1,000,000 it was the zone scroll) but they were allowed into the zone after the first character got in. So far, doric is the only new map that a character can get access to but can not use the gate.

Looks like a bug. Smells like a bug.

Sound Updates

Going to sound odd but is a simple solution to this problem be we unlock two skins of the same look meaning if we wish to have a normal weapon sound we could skin the normal sounding one over the legendary sound one? Also could be a solution for people who dislike footsteps or something ? Allows different people to both eat their cake….. I actually skin my predator just for reason the sound of it gets irritating after a while. Love the look or it though.

Hmm, ‘sound skins’? If GW2 were being written from scratch an item owner could pick one but other people could override all other sounds in the game …. maybe even have sound sets of those preferences?

Sounds are a bit tricky. Something that is fingernails on the blackboard to one person will be musical ambrosia to someone else.

As well as noninstanced/nonfractal content. Sometimes I wonder if I am the only person that hates instances and fractals with the fires of a googleplex supernovae.

I would certainly want elites to be reasonably achievable in the first weekend for us altoholics. None of this requiring 400 points business (even the 250 limit was painful eventually when you are running multiple characters and had not done world complete).

As has been said …. a COMPLETE expansion on Day One (or if there has to be a staggered release for some reason provide a firm schedule for such in advance). Many of us were burned by HOT messing things up so anet needs to get this one right.

So I’m a WoW vet and me and some friends want to go to try a new mmo with super competitive PvP (e.g. I’m currently #7th rogue “thief” in US in WoW) and while some are voting for like Black Desert etc I want to try gw2 cause I bought this game and the expansion when it was on sale but I never fully got to play the game.

I want to know how much does gw2 truly require to play competitive and all the costs. Example, Black Desert sure you can pay once that’s it and have access to entire game but you’ll be lacking without pets for combat etc unless you use real money

So in gw2 I already see things like extra character slots, bag space, and some outfits cosmetics. Asides that, can you fully play the whole personal story, wvw, and spvp competitive ranked and not pay for anything other than the expansion?

It really comes down to how much you want to pay. I would download the ftp to make sure nothing in the mechanics is a dealbreaker (for example, I bought ESO and THEN found out I needed to use a mouse constantly to move) before buying the game (bonus points if you hit one of the sales). At that point what you want to buy with real money (unlimited tools, more bag space, some skins, etc) kicks in. In hindsight I paid on average the cost of a wow subscription or less (with the advantage I could do 0 if funds were tight that month) the first year and now very rarely put in money (usually I buy anything with ingame gold now and it is not like I min/max farming) while still playing the game. It is not like everything I bought that first year went poof, but that would be the case with a sub game.

Pretty much my feeling, however I have no problem with it being here for people that want it (unless it diverts resources from something else). I looked in once, found it just an old video game that I could play with my character, and have never looked back. Last year I did not even go in it at all.

Holdouts?

I have done fractals only twice. Neither time was it my idea but someone in my party kept pestering the rest of us to do them.

I am coming up on my third year and have yet to make a single legendary. The only difference between them and ascended is the skin and the fact I can swap stats out of combat. Now I can even do the stat swapping on some trinkets for unbound magic anyway if I can not just swap with another alt.

Please explain to me why I am a holdout if I do not max out those two mastery lines. Go on, I can wait.

Without trying to compare the two games (I recently looked into supplementing my gameplay with ESO so it is hard not to do that) I find the more interesting things comparing the expansions themselves rather than the content. It is almost like they looked at HOT, saw what was done wrong, and learned what not to do.

re jeans: male jeans often use sturdier fabric (and more reliable sizing) so they get ‘borrowed’ often

Back on topic though. It would be interesting to not have outfits/skins not tied to genders. There was a big call for this with the wedding outfit (think same-sex weddings). The ideal way is with unisex wireframes underneath, like with the Asura. When you have different models under the clothing you open up a whole can of worms, everything from accidentally revealing something that is not normally shown in public to clipping issues. While it might be a nice idea in theory in practice it would be a HUGE headache.

How many folks are aware that this practice goes against VISA MasterCard regulations? According to both VISA and MasterCard they are not allowed to charge your card until they ship or complete the transaction.

The Cardholder only needs to contact their issuing bank (the bank your card is going through) and file a complaint. This could actually prevent ArenaNet from accepting credit cards and/or also be fined for the violation.

Bad thing is the 4 days would be over before the Dispute was settled, but it would force ANet to re-visit their business model.

Oh mighty kitten put us out of our misery. People realize we will still be trolled about this long past the 4 days, right?

It is a common warning with games and similar things. We have it here. I had it in second life. I seem to remember both warning me in advance. I have ESO being shipped to me and I am sure that is in the fine print somewhere there too ….. not that I really care since I already have more than a week’s worth of stuff I want to investigate.

An experienced player could level a couple of characters to 80 the long way around but for a new player (myself for example) they are not out of the starter zones. Even with using the lvl 80 boost if you jump in cold to lvl 80 content you will get frustrated (many posts about this) and need to go back to learn what works in this game anyway.

Exactly, I just ordered the physical box of a second game to play to prevent burnout and have been watching all sorts of n00b vids for it. Even so, I figure I will still be learning the basic mechanics for awhile. GW2 and every other game I have played have been the same …. there is nothing so urgent to buy the first few days because you are learning mechanics/exploring the world.

The only exception to this is if it is an alt account so stuff is already old hat.

You couldn’t of just done a Google search? It’s not going to happen. At least not for another decade.

Psst. Most people initially assume the search on a site works and it will return no results.

You can use gw2efficiency to see what skins you need. Then the wiki or something to see what items have those skins. Then the TP to see what things are the cheepest.

Really? Three places? If I do not know the name of something odds are I am browsing for things I have yet to unlock. Please anet!

I’m still hoping that they will give a feature (or upgrade the campact function) that will automatically sort stuff in your inventory (except what’s in the invisible bag) into the bags that are made for that function. Example: Exotic gear sorted into the bag where it should first appear if it has an empty space. Often I fill up certain bags and when I deposit, it leaves space open in the appropriate bags.
I’m also waiting for the bug fix to the bag that grabs all gear to allow bags that claim a tier priority in placement of gear for that tier.

Yes, right now I fear the compact option because it breaks however I want things sorted. Invisible bags help somewhat but not completely. For example, I devote a bag just to vendor junk (and extra space if needed) and do not want it sorted into my other stuff … however an invisible bag there defeats the whole point of mostly vendor stuff.

Thanks!

Now all I need to do is get my other 14 characters over there (the device is soulbound).

Soulbound? shudder My 15 characters feel the same pain.

Unfortunately it is not like the game is overflowing with ways to get ascended breathers, you need winterberries.

Yeah, that freeze was old the 1000th time it happened. I am tracking everything in the various zones on spreadsheets (UM cost and such) to complete kitting out their ascended items on all of my characters though. Out of the 4 zones so far Bloodstone Fen (why oh why are 2 zones BF now, this is almost as bad as when someone says ‘maguuma’) is dead last to go there since I have a guaranteed 100 rubies every 33 days without even going there once. The other 3 come down to personal preference and what you plan to do in each zone (how many alts/day and such). You can certainly gather the most of the zone item in Bitterfrost … but it is also worth the least when you look at potential UM from it and cost for the vendor items (the other 3 zones are an equal cost to each other).

Probably one of the reasons why people rarely visit that map now. I do not even need to go there and get a guaranteed 3 rubies per day from my home instance. If I am feeling ambitious about getting more rubies I can WP there and get 2 more doing back flips and collecting UB. After those 5 easy ones it is a case of diminishing returns.

For bitterfrost frontier alts could use the gate from the next zone once one chararacter on the account had done the first part of the story. For LD I can not do that from DR on my other characters. Some people are saying they can though. So what are other people seeing before I report this as a bug?

Those nodes are awesome! Sure, they take UM and gold to get but after that you have a guaranteed number of each zone’s item to collect every day. No more going to shudder Bloodstone Fen just to get some rubies!

It all depends what would be involved in getting the title. I consider them on the order of a cool dye …. nice to have but I balance that against the cost/effort.

Thanks, so call it, what, 3 characters doing the zone completely since I think I read 16 nodes. Given the zone takes longer than the others not TOO bad but it can be a crunch to someone whose norm is to run multiple alts. I go though many characters in a long session too, I just vary them in different things so I do not get bored but not everyone does that.

So this is only mining or does anyone know? While 50 might seem reasonable if you only run it once or twice generally people play more on things like weekends.

People were instance hopping to farm them, but surely that can’t be the reason

No, it can’t be, since instance hopping (a.k.a. multiloot farming) has been a thing in all of the new maps this far.

Exactly. I do not instance hop but I disconnect from Ember Bay once. When I reconnected I did a double-take that the petrified nodes I had just farmed were showing on my minimap.

I do use multiple characters to farm zones though. Take bitterfrost frontier: I feel if someone wants to run around more with things jumping at you, biting, and freezing you they deserve more loot.
