Norn hair/beard lighting

Yepp, it’s weird like that. When I first noticed this, I quickly recreated mine (only level 2 anyway), but it is pretty irritating, especially since it creates a discordance in ANet’s quest for homogenising hair and beard (while, oddly, leaving the eyebrows alone).
It is well known that, IRL, hair and beard usually don’t match (though they tend to match more if you’re dark haired), but it’s just sloppy work when it only occurs on some shades and on some hair and beard combos.

What happened with long hairstyles for males?

Norn are known to be tall Vikings, I expected them to have a large variety of long hairstyles compared to other races. The lack of long hair and long beard really puts me speechless.

No, they’re not. They’re based and inspired by Norse culture and language, with a dab of animalistic shamanism – if they really were Vikings, they’d be raiding settlements, laughing at monotheistic faiths about carpenters and quaffing mead.
Don’t let the Hollywood version (horned helmets and all) get in the way of truth.

Also, ANet will proooobably release more hairstyles after another year and they’ve got nothing better to do (you know, like game balance and such).

**Spoiler** What did scarlet do?

@Jaken:
Never felt that way to me, sorry. To me it seemed like they were trying to sweep Scarlet herself under the rug, overshadowing her with Kas’ and Jory’s romance, Rox and Braham, Taimi’s person, the LA destruction and now Mordremoth.

Which, to be fair, is exactly what we asked them to do, in countless pages of countless threads.

No, what we asked was for either Scarlet to be better written and performed or, if that was impossible (sad day, if she’s the extent of ANet’s creativity), that she be written out or diminished. If any of the others overshadowed her, I don’t know what game you’ve been playing.

All those other mini-stories; Rox and Dumbham, Marjory and Kasmeer, Taimi (who is, what present for the marionette and nothing else?) and the LA thing were all part of Scarlet’s story. The aforementioned were her canonical prime enemies and most likely will get the credit for defeating her – not that they actually did anything.

Honestly, the big reveal: that it was a dragon all along, wasn’t much of a surprise. Just like World of Warcraft, GW2 has a designated group of entities that are bent on domination and frequently corrupts either mind or body of the mortal races. In WoW they are called the Old Gods and have been behind like 9/10 of anyone going mad or starting something. In GW2 they are called the Elder Dragons and their scaly little fingers reach everywhere.
It’s a trope and a common mistake to make, to have some ancient evil as a corruptive force, instead of exploring the psyche of the mad itself, is amateuristic and so overdone it’s getting little charred bits at the corners. It would have been much more refreshing if Scarlet had simply been a loony and woken up the dragon without his influence.

Re: the debate whether Sylvari are Mordremoth’s minions or not.
Eeeh, just because Ceara was afflicted by his mind whispers doesn’t mean she was corrupted by him in the same sense as the Branded, Icebrood or Risen are. These have all been changed in their very nature, but Scarlet just went mad. See the Old Gods and Elder Dragons above.
From interviews and their history, Sylvari could either be a natural response to the Elder Dragons, or even something created by the Druids of the Maguuma as an incorruptible army against the Elder Dragons’ destruction – whether they are immune to the plant-y ED, however, remains to be seen.

Proposal Overview
The pet is said by ANet to be one with the ranger and so integral to its functionality and philosophy, yet as it is now, the pet is a dead weight if you’re in an encounter where AoE is prominent. So while a ranger should always want to keep his pet alive, there should be some form of safety net if the pet hits the fan, so to speak.

Goal of Proposal
Pets die. That has been a truth since Beta and it’s in part due to bad design, in part to players. The goal here is to let a Beast Mastery ranger still be viable if his pet dies, so he won’t be sidelined until his pet revives.

Proposal Functionality
My proposal is that one of the Grandmaster Traits in Beast Mastery be something like “We Are One”: When your second pet dies, the ranger goes into a rage, gaining five stacks of Might, Fury and Quickness (7 sec) as well as a flat damage bonus and each hit heals the downed pet for a small amount. Ideally, the duration of the damage bonus should only last for a little while, so the pet can get back up and normal dps routine can resume.

Associated Risks
Obviously players will kill their pets on purpose to activate it, but since each hit heals the pet until revived, it wouldn’t last very long. Additionally, the trait should have an ICD, so one cannot simply let the pet die over and over for infinite Quickness/Might.

Proposal Overview
The pet should be a boon to the ranger, not its bread and, as it is now, stale butter. My proposal is therefore to make the pet optional.

Goal of Proposal
We all know that the pet AI leaves a lot to be desired, but as also know that a complete rework simply isn’t an option at the moment. So, I propose that players traiting in the Beast Mastery line should get full functionality of their pet (and a little extra, I’ll make another post), but others who feel encumbered by it, should have the option to Stow it until called for again by the player.

Proposal Functionality
How will this work then and balance out? When Stowed, the ranger receives a base damage bonus of how much the pet is worth in terms on damage and in addition, a unique boon that’s defined by the pet family. Example: you have a chance to proc Might if you have a canine Stowed, or Protection if it is ursine.

Associated Risks
The risks of this are that rangers become too strong dps wise: especially if they go for Signet of the Hunt, which might lead to one-shot gimmick builds – however, I feel that a skill as highly telegraphed as Maul, it shouldn’t be an issue.

I’ll point out that it’s for dungeons, not general PvE or fractals, so my “never died” doesn’t come off too… arrogant.
Some conditions are harder to avoid than others. A frozen circle in HotW, a fire field that you dodge into because it wasn’t there when you actually dodged, etc. And it’s not just for myself, it’s for others too. I don’t have a dedicated pve group.

Eeeh, Churning Earth has never killed me yet. And I don’t quite see how… the frozen meteor thingy and the fire field (which, if I recall correctly) does enough damage.

Don’t get me wrong, Zelyhn, I’m genuinely curious about it and appreciate your answers, but whenever a build gets labelled as “meta”, it feels like it’s hypothesis over practice and I’m wary to start using it. I’ll give it a try, ofc.

Mikhail.4961

Hey Mikhail, I am going to try to give you a detailed answer as to why fire is much more desirable than arcana.

First let’s take a look at what arcana gives you:
- Fury on swap (very desirable)
- Vigor (very desirable)
- Lingering Elements (public enemy number 1)
- Elemental attunement (desirable for the most part)
- Arcane precision (public enemy number 2)
- Evasive Arcana (cleanse and blast are desirable)
- Boon duration (somewhat desirable)
- Attunement recharge (insignificant due to fresh air and relevant skills’ cooldown)

Quickly browsed the thread linked and the Lingering Elements not affecting damage modifiers has never bothered or surprised me. It’s even on the wiki. I don’t know about the recharge being insignificant… a second can let you live or die if you need to, example, swap to water and cleanse.

Then let’s look at the advantages of fire:
- Flame Barrier (public enemy number 3)
- Burning precision, internal fire, or Conjurer (all desirable)
- Sunspot (desirable)
- Pyromancer’s alacrity (very desirable: aligns the cooldown of our important fire spells with the rotation pattern of a build with little arcana points)
- Burning Rage (desirable)
- Persisting flames (very desirable)
- Power (very desirable)
- Condition duration (desirable)

Hmm…

Now let’s analyse the contributions:
- First, Evasive Arcana. This trait is actually detrimental. This is because you are going to use your dodges for something else than dodging. Therefore you are actually more likely to take damage and conditions. So either you use this trait strategically and the outcome is paradoxical, or you don’t and then it is simply useless.
- I am going to assume that you are using EA strategically, and therefore that you are not dodging as efficiently as you could. This means that you need more sustain. Therefore boons like protection and regeneration are relevant for you. But you could do without them if you used dodges for dodging. Therefore only the might from Elemental attunement is relevant. This is a nice group contribution, but it is very weak compared to what you could get in fire for the same amount of points.

Haven’t died yet from a lack of dodge, though. Fire Field, dodge into it for an Earth finish x3 and switch to something else. Since I got vigour from the first hit, stamina isn’t an issue, so I can’t agree with your first point. As the others tie into it, I’ll go the same route there.

- Boon duration is nice. If we disregard unnecessary boons then the best we can get from it is the following: say you can maintain 19 stacks of might on average then boon duration will bring this to 25 (rounding a bit), this is a contribution of 6, and that is 210 power. Fire gives you 300. Granted, there is also a group effect to take into account.
- I personally use 10 in arcana to maintain perma vigor and ensure my fury uptime. This is because I tend to play in non-optimised groups. However it can be argued that persisting flames nullifies the contribution of fury on swap if you can realise a proper rotation.

Sounding more and more like a staff build… I do wonder though if Persisting Flames’s fury makes up for the 10% damage of Earth, since I already have 100% fury uptime, it’s not as impressive to me.

In comparison, fire gives you the following:
- Offensive defense via the use of defensive conditions (chill, cripple, etc)
- Much greater group effect: fury for the group (equivalent to a 420 precision boost for the group), increased vulnerability stacks from Weak Spot = more damage for the group.
- Synergy everywhere.
- Damage, damage, damage. And well, the “Zerker Paradigm” dictates that the faster you kill your foes the less likely you are to get hit before they die. Therefore damage is defense, somehow

Er… where do you get the chill and cripple from in the Fire tree? If you mean the ones from Frozen Burst and Ring of Earth, then that’s already in the other build.
This applies to the conclusion as well (because I’m lazy): essentially, it’s some survivability/utility in exchange for some damage by going into Arcana instead of Fire.
Going back to 30 points in Fire, I know the 25 minor adds 10% to burning foes, but that’s not a guarantee you’ll have (though, I see the preference as with reduced fire CD, you can keep the fire up more often so it comes down to foes that might be hard to get close to vs foes that can’t be burned).

(I do have a focus, for whenever I need Swirling Winds and Magnetic Wave, though guardians are so common, it’s gathering dust.)

I’m currently running D/D 0/30/10/0/30 (yes, yes, I come from a PvP background) and I mainly use Evasive Arcana to get might and cure conditions and cycle through the attunements faster (I get boatloads of boons). The 10 in Earth is clearly for the raw damage increase which is awesome, imho. I’m pretty loathe to give that up, but I’m willing to try spending 20 in Fire and see if it’s worth it: so I’m curious, is the Might and Cleanse from EA, as well as the boons, made up for by the raw power that Fire offers?

Serezenith, it doesn’t occur on all blond shades, iirc. It also depends on the hair/beard combination: the more “solid” beards are closer to the hair, while the “non-solid” (like the one with three braids) always become lighter.
It’s interesting that this only happens on blond shades and not black, brown or red (this is why I chose Campfire instead of Blond for my Norn).

Lore questions: norn transformation

in Norn

It also depends on the nature of the transformation: is it something granted by the spirits themselves, or is shapeshifting innate to the species? If it’s the former, you probably need the blessing of said Spirit – you can the blessing of any and all Spirits, but it seems only one favours you in particular – but if it is the latter, it might be as a mark of respect to their saviours (oddly enough excluding Owl, Ox, Eagle and Wolverine).

Mechanically, yes :/ Sadly so. I suppose if we want a Ritualist with different yet familiar mechanics, we’d need to figure out what the spirits do and how big a part they play in the Ritualist’s gameplay. Something above the mindlessness of illusions and minions, but better designed than pets – something with a short window of action (say 10 seconds), yet deals good damage/has utility, longer recuperation to balance this out and some effect when inactive.

But, hold on here… if magic has become more varied and powerful and we know that magic + ancient rituals became the Ritualist of GW1, shouldn’t they logically still be employed in GW2’s time? Now they’d be ever more powerful: instead of a few spirits, they could call down a host, etc. Hell, they’d probably be able to call living peoples’ souls now.

*does a double take
The Soundlessness (not the actual term) was developed by a firstborn?

Which one, I wonder…

Also, it was nice to see Angel return to the questions she sowed regarding the bloodstones. Seeing how toxic that proved last time, I had given up hope that it would be addressed again.

Hm, this is a good question. All the Luminaries are described as guardians of the Pale Tree, Caithe probably wouldn’t need a technique like that, nor would Trehearne. Dagonet? Possibly, he studies the Dream and the dreams of all sylvari so it is feasible that he discovered how to distance oneself from it. Faolain? This creates a very hulking build. Not shown here, but mentioned, is the spine and head shape: male norn have very round heads and their spine seems to be less straight than a human’s.

For the second picture, I scaled the human up to the norn’s size (ish) and superimposed them: as you can see, the build is very different.

In the third and final one, I was bored and just messing with photoshop.

Full zerker, melee ranger works in fractals and dungeons (though Brazil’s build isn’t the only one to go), that much is true. Sadly, the vast majority of rangers use a long or shortbow and stay at range all the time (not giving boons or getting boons), forget how to dodge (overrealiance on built in evades?) and use Barrage as a main source of dps (which is sad).

Sword mainhand, warhorn off + the second is personal preference depending on the fight at hand (I favour the greatsword, but swap that regularly) and some level of pet management is all you need.

First of all, Jon, thank you for talking to us. We may not say it, but it means a lot.

Even though we wouldn’t do it now another shot at Greatsword to discuss

A) 1 chain NDA by giving Vigor.
B) Add evade to swoop…

Discuss?

No. Sorry, but the evade on GS auto-chain needs to stay. In open PvE it is amazing for tackling hard fights or just staying alive from a poor pull. In dungeons, WvW and PvP, it becomes a powerful – and unique to the playstyle – survival tool that we need. After I learned to turn off the auto-attack, the GS has quickly become more and more useful. A good payer turns this, as some put it, “RNG” to their own power.

I’m also against the evade on swoop simply because leaping over 1000 units and being unhittable, is simply overpowered. No way around it. Plus swoop has more utility than just gap closer/extender: it’s a leap, and works amazingly well with Healing Spring, or other fields if that tickles your fancy.

If you truly need and want to change the GS, then adding some damage or perhaps might would be the way to go. Say a successful block (one block per use of the skill) would give a few stacks, or maul does more damage if your opponent has boons? Kind of like mesmer’s sword chain.

coming from warhammer where the two pet classes, Squig herder (ranged) and White Lion (melee) had a tactic that increased their damage by 25% when they ran without a pet it would be nice to see something like this. Both classes also had tactics that revolved around the pet, one such as the “vengeance” you mentioned for the pet dying, ones for crit damage increase while using a pet etc. We are the pet class but I would just like to have the options I have seen in other games with the pet class. You want us to have “build diversity” this is a good way to create it. Give us the option to gain benefits from the use of a pet, CC, boons, etc, or the option to solo and have a base damage increase and a lack of CC and extra boons. You will see rangers in PvP who run the pets for the CC and ones in PvE who store them for the base damage.

Never played Warhammer, but that does sound very useful and like a good solution… and something the players have been saying for a long time, hint, hint.

You shouldn’t play a class hoping that they’ll change a core mechanic about it. That’s stupid.

That’s like me playing thief, hoping they remove stealth from the class. Or a mesmer, hoping they remove clones from the class.

If you hate the pet so much, you really should reroll a class you can better tolerate. I’m not being a kitten, I sincerely mean that. Your gaming experience will be a lot better.

Stealth isn’t the class mechanic/defining aspect of the Thief. That’s either Steal or Weapon Skill #3 (or initiative… honestly, the Thief’s got a lot going on).

People who want to remove the pet, like myself and thefantasticg, most likely want it gone (not perma-gone, but stabled) because as it is now, it’s not good enough without sacrificing everything else.
Let’s look at the mesmer and the clones. I can avoid spending a single point in Illusions and still do incredibly well in PvP/WvW/PvE. Why? Because the clones are just tools for a quick effect and then a Shatter. If one does go heavily into Illusions, however, it’s almost ridiculous how powerful they become and the mesmer himself is still very strong. Stronger than the ranger, at any rate.

If the pet gets killed (and don’t come with “change it before that happens!” as the tide of battle can change in a second), our damage and a potential source for vigour is gone for 60 seconds. For 60 seconds we cannot use our class mechanic! Imagine that happening to a mesmer: no clones for a whole minute. Imagine a thief not being able to use initiative based skills for one minute.
Yeah. So what we want is a fix to make the pet useful without spending 30 points into BM, or allow us to stable it.

Any class is easy to play, but not as easy to master. So sod off, warrior-haters.

Ranger is always going to have the pet. It’s not going anywhere. If you don’t want that, you should reroll yesterday and not later.

In PvE, for me anyway, the pet is only there for the revives. Been a melee ranger since launch and learned the hard way how to survive and if it weren’t for faster revive speed, I would never notice it’s there. Different story in WvW ofc <.<

So… with the upcoming changes, is it even worth levelling an ele for the express purpose of d/d?
Because as I see it, Arcana VI is no more overpowered than mesmer’s Dueling Adept trait (five points, Critical infusion) and that’s a class with great survivability even without it.

With what Jon said renewing will stay adept and elemental attunement will move to master. So the standard 30 arcana d/d build is still possible.

Hm, but is that final though? He just said he saw the logic of it… which means fig tbh.

Right now, D/D is horrible. These changes are not going to make it stronger. The best we can hope for is to adjust the changes so that D/D at least isn’t made weaker, and hope that the nerfs other classes are receiving result in it being at least moderately viable. But it still is going to be a subpar build after this patch, so if that’s a problem, I’d go for something else.

Really? I mean strictly for WvW/PvP purposes now, where they’re still pretty good.

Ranger:
We feel like rangers also currently have too much endurance regeneration through traits. Due to this, we’ve made adjustments to Wilderness Survival traits, and we’ve also brought down the passive of Sun Spirit and the active effect for Storm Spirit.

  • Wilderness 5 Natural Vigor. Reduced the increased endurance regeneration from 50% to 25%.
    .

Let’s see… Primal Reflexes grants vigour when you’re critically hit: meaning, quite obviously, you need to take a hard hit to the face to be able to dodge more? But if you’ve taken a crit already, another will soon follow if you’re low on endurance.
Then we have Beastmastery X, that grants vigour when a pet is activated. It’s not half-bad, but has a radius of 600 units.
Survival IV, vigorous renewal, only activates on an initial healing effect: that is, it doesn’t activate on the pulses of Healing Spring or Troll’s Ungeant.

Total vigour time: 15 seconds. That’s a lot of vigour… but very defensive in nature and you have to be close to your opponent, which rules out the ranged options.

All of these require you to actively pick them, sacrificing useful or perhaps better traits simply for survivability. The 50% endurance regen from the 5 pointer was amazing for freeing up points and creating a strong character that, while not as insanely dodgey as the troll-specc thieves, could still hold its own. So how about instead you address all this vigour (does anyone ever take Primal Reflexes btw?) instead? We have enough trouble outside of bunker builds to survive anyway, seeing as we got crap condi removal, too much reliance on the pet (kill it already!) and very few defensive weapon skills.

TL:DR: ANet:

Sounds like utter twaddle to me that Scarlet imbibed Lyssa’s essence.

So, what, now we can add godhood to her resume?
God kitten Mary Sue.

EDIT: Since when is "kitten " a word so dire it has to be censored?

So’s kittenroach. xD

My problem with Scarlet is that she’s the Jon Favreau of Tyria: she’s in everything. During the QJ, I thought she was kind of funny, in small amounts. That quickly changed.

So… signed.

I think this is NPC exclusive, sort of to mark the specialness of the NPCs wearing them. Queen Jennah’s got one too, at least in her colours.

I’d be up for that, absolutely. Though I really just want to change the god(dess) I chose for my warrior, as I initially thought the choice dictated my racial skills.

I like the male Norn bodies as they are, apart from a few things: One, when they idle, or run or whatever, their heads are too much forward – it’s like the spine’s bent at the end. Interestingly, they stand straight in cutscenes. Two, less spherical heads. It looks… odd. Three, NEVER SKIP LEG DAY. And finally four, which is more options, but that goes for everyone.

Yo, intro: it’s a bit weird that you can choose “street rat” and also “never knew my real parents but was adopted” when the feel of Street Rat is that you’re an orphan and only have Quinn. Anyway, that aside…

The commoner’s storyline culminates in a battle with the bandits and you have to choose which building and its residents to save: the orphanage or the hospital. I’ve always saved the orphanage, because you know, kids, but I wondered if anyone’s saved the hospital and what consequences that had?

P.S. Bit unfair that only the noble story doesn’t have to choose between your best friend/a mild case of poisoning and orphanage/hospital fires.

All races have their share of bad guys. Sons of Svanir, Flame Legion, Nightmare Court, Inquest, Separatists and general banditry… and then there’s the average citizen who i probably as greedy as the Ministers, that high born fellow who carefully murdered his entire family because he wanted to be called “Lord”, and that insane military guy who dreams of a racial purge through blood and steel.
