Lazarus' identity a poor plot twist

in Living World

I just came back to this game after a few months off and went through chapters 2-5 all at once, and I gotta say, I’m as baffled by the Balthazar reveal as the OP. So much about it just makes no sense at all.

But my primary complaint was actually a bit different – why was my character attacking Lazarus in the first place? I mean, the guy was nothing but helpful to us in his prior appearances. He clearly started out as enemy-of-my-enemy by starting a fight with Caudecus and peeling off a bunch of his followers, and then acted downright eager to help me with the whole defense of Aurene. And let me tell you, as a non-leet gamer, I needed the help. He even demonstrated good faith by letting one of my trusted people follow him around! And then we take the first available opportunity to ambush him, beat him up, and kill his minions just because known villain Caudecus thought he wasn’t a real Mursaat. Heck, given the bad reputation of Mursaat, not really being one should be a point in his favor.

So, you know, I can’t really blame Balthazar for turning against us. We were clearly not going to be reliable allies.

Did you miss the part where he said the fate of Tyria doesn’t matter? He’s lied to us, he obviously has an agenda, he’s absorbing massive amounts of power and he doesn’t care whether or not the world is destroyed.

I’d say that’s reason enough to attack him.

He says that during the final fight: when he’s disguised as Lazarus, he doesn’t. We attacked first.

Who would you invite to join Dragon's Watch?

Maybe someone blessed by a raven for a diversity of sorts, not a usual mountain of brainless muscles.

It’s funny cause we’ve seen (or read) about Eir lifting boulders, and we have seen Braham crush solid walls of ice with a mace-smack… but Braham is literally the weakest-hitting member of the team. Anyway!

If I had to retain the guild, I’d ditch the name first and foremost. While it’s nice to have a double meaning, I’d rather not have it be so focused on just the dragons.
Secondly, I wouldn’t invite any of the current Destiny’s Wannabees. Marjory and Kasmeer can go back to solving crime, Taimi can go back to school, Canach… can bomb something, idk, and Braham can go and freeze in a lake. And Rox can be ignored, as she has been for the past season.
Then I would invite Laranthir, as previously mentioned: he’s excellent at getting results.
It’d be followed by M.O.X., because you know Zinn would’ve designed him to be awesome 250 years later, and preferably a Norn shaman: I am not sure if Valda or Weibe would be able to join, but either one maybe (plus I am really interested in the Norn shamanism aspect). Then I would actually invite Valette Wi, the former aide of Caudecaus: insane, I know, but it’d start off as her repayment to Kryta, and evolve into her finding her calling and maturing.
Finally, I think an asura would be fitting, but I can’t think of one right now.

If I don’t have to retain a guild, I’d go back to being the Commander of the Pact: we took down Zhaitan and united the people of Tyria. It was awesome.

I had hoped for the terrestrial Spear (for thieves and warriors), as some of the Seraph guards in Lake Doric are wielding them, but I am… unsure about the rifle.
For PvP? The maps with reachable high ground and good line of sight (Spirit Watch, Skyhammer) would probably be good for it, but those that are flatter or cramped? Probably not.
In WvWvW it’ll probably be disgustingly overtuned, then nerfed and forgotten, because a class with high mobility, stealth and high damage long range attacks, just can’t be balanced without some noticeable penalty to using the rifle – at which point, why should you use it at all?

Mikhail.4961

I just played through it the first time, and I didn’t even raise my eyebrows. It just… didn’t make sense. After we found out that Lazarus wasn’t Lazarus, I thought it would be a dragon minion aiming to become the next Elder Dragon (either one of Zhaitan’s or Mordremoth’s). So when Lazarus was covered in flames and the illusion burned away… it made no sense for it to be Balthazar.

1) Lazarus using fire to kill the White Mantle loyal to Caudecus means nothing. Fire is such a common element and magic that saying this was a “tip” is asinine.
2) “All the deceptions, the lies…” Call him a great many things, but Balthazar was never one for disguises and subterfuge. I also wonder how Kasmeer’s magic can break an illusion supposedly cast by a divine artifact (assuming it is divine and not just Kasmeer seeing gods in everything).
3) Summoning Tegan and Temar also means very little: All Humans can summon Tegan and Temar, or rather, we can summon impersinations of them (I assume). Balthazar summoning them is hardly that special – and we only have his word that they are indeed, Tegan and Temar.
4) And we only have Kasmeer’s proclamation that is is Balthazar. As someone mentioned, it could be Menzies or… I don’t know, E.

Taimi is all we need... (potential spoilers)

Mikhail.4961

I see people excusing Braham with this “he’s 16!” line a lot, so I have to wonder: given that Norn and Human physiology is very different (and only look similiar, but are in fact from completely different worlds): why would a Norn teenager react the same as a Human one? I mean, yes, Anet’s writers aren’t good enough to to escape the “human in funny suit” issue that most RPGs have (meaning that despite their vastly different appearances, cultures, morals and ethics etc, they still act human), but at the very least, explain why/if Norn youngsters act like this normally.

Edit: Braham is actually 21 years old, not 16. So his acting is even worse.

Anyway, I agree with the OP. At this point, it’s Taimi and Poobah against the world. And Meowth, of course.

How would you redesign the ranger?

in Ranger

Posted by: Mikhail.4961

Mikhail.4961

Hm. Hmmm.

Right, I’d likely do it as follows: (this will be baseline, obviously, not an e-spec)

We Are As One: Nature ritual (sorry for the GW1 talk): instead of taming a living beast, you summon forth the spirit of a great matriarch/patriarch beast of your choice and it lends its power to you – no pet or spirit is actually summoned though, it’s just stats and extra stuff. The stats and extra features gained changes depending on the pet family: canine and ursine aren’t the same, nor is avian or saurian etc. Each family gives something different, so you need to be prepared to adapt to different situations.

Example: Saurian spirit, gain condition damage and gain Glass Arrows, which causes all ranged attacks to have a chance to inflict bleeding.

Example 2: Feline spirit, gain power and precision and gain Tiger’s Fury, which increases the duration of Swiftness and Quickness on you.

(How to do it? If you have a canine as your pet, and cast this ritual, the pet becomes stabled, you gain the stats and features, until such a time you recast the spell, at which point the pet is resummoned. Has… shall we say… 120-180 second cooldown? It’d be a buff icon on the same bar as Opening Strike is currently).

Petless Ranger Please. Yes, this again.

in Ranger

Posted by: Mikhail.4961

Mikhail.4961

The vast majority of rangers depicted in games have a animal companion of some kind as a inherent feature of the class.

Most of these are not built around said animal companion though, and that is key.

This is also accurate of fantasy and historical fiction novels and books. You may argue that Aragorn didn’t have an animal companion, but he didn’t use a ranged weapon either (that was legolas’ shtick).

Well, Aragon also fits the proper “ranger” archetype: one who ranges about, protecting and guarding, unlike the GW1 ranger, which is really a beastmaster. And while Aragorn is never mentioned explicitly to carry a bow in the books, he does so in the movie, but it is inferred that all Rangers of the North carry more weaponry than only swords (in the books):

A little apart the Rangers sat, silent, in an ordered company, armed with spear and bow and sword.
Now I will 100% agree that the pet mechanic needs work, and several very solid suggestions on how to do that have been put forth. Hopefully some of those will get used. But remove it entirely, and you might as well play a warrior or a guardian or a thief. This is what rangers are. If you don’t like it, you have 8 other class options.
GW1 handled it well. Why can’t GW2?

Petless Ranger Please. Yes, this again.

Beastmaster’s core mechanics are pets. RANGErs core mechanics are their weapons which outputs lethal damage at RANGE.
There are no Rangers in this game. We are Beastmasters.
Btw i shelved my “Ranger” when i start playing DH months ago (smiley face)

That is literally NOT the definition of a ranger. A ranger is someone who “ranges” or roves about. It’s specifically someone who patrols a given area – in modern times we have park rangers who are essentially forest keepers. The name “ranger” never has and never will be specifically someone who fights at range else that class would be called archer, sniper, marksman, etc.

Putting the title Ranger in quotation marks and ‘smiley facing’ because you switched classes to DH – like you made a point instead of demonstrating that you don’t know English – is pretty cringe-worthy.

I used to argue thisd with my guild back in the day as well when I got crap for running melee weapons only on my ranger. Ranger =/= ranged weapons – it’s funny how people automatically assumes that.

Anyhow, yes, I would like some kind of petless option. Even in GW1 I never felt like my pet was mandatory, unlike here.

Weird bug that I’ve noticed a few times throughout the week, but it got particularly bad today. When you’re gliding, sometime you stop going forwards: instead you just slowly glide downwards in place. To me, and I don’t know if this is common or not, PB is a great trait on its own, and synergies disgustingly well with CI – but it offers something different from MA, which is that PB is practically made for low-cooldown, spamming builds (like eles) to give you a breathing window, while MA is just to destroy the enemy in a single moment. In PvP, I think that PB shines brighter, because of the amount of bunkers and mitigation boons so readily available.

For WvW, however, I’d go with MA because it is so very easy to pick and choose your duels/fights and instagibbing someone has more value than a prolonged fight. except against eles. I push them off cliffs.

Ascalonian Royal Line is broken... or is it?

in Lore

Posted by: Mikhail.4961

Mikhail.4961

Queen Jennah is probably much closer related to the most recent King’s & Queen’s of Ascalon than the Duke of Ebonhawk.

Assuming Barradin/his brother was Samuelsson’s ancestor and using the Thackerey’s family tree as mold 8though the gravestone states she’s his great grandmother, it seems mathematically impossible for it to only be four generations between them)…

*GW1*__________________*GW2*
Barradin → 4-6 generations → Wade Samuelsson.
Q. Salma → 4-6 generations → Queen Jennah

At some point, either through Salma’s husband or any of her successors, the royal line of Ascalon would have had to intermarry into the Krytan Royal Family. We know Adelbern’s line is dead, so that leaves Barradin’s: he himself did not marry, and his brother either died childless (which makes Samuelsson’s ancestor perhaps a cousin to the Duke) or his son was deemed inappropriate for kinghood, and Alathea was killed with no heirs: no known siblings exist.

Of course, Kryta was established by Mazduk the Accursed, whose descendants can claim some right to Ascalon through the blood of Doric, but that is a VERY roundabout way to do it: a way longer still than Wade Samuelsson’s claim.

No less terrible than last time it came up . Torturers and murderers aren’t generally a heroic archetype. Tyria had them before and seems to largely be glad to be rid of them.

More Customization for HoT?

So, since release, we have gotten a total of 90 hairstyles for the different species, many more colours and 90 faces. While the armour department has gone a little slower, I suppose the outfits are considered new models, too, so that’s fine.
But what I really want to know is if there are any plans on including more body options for the expansion? Traditionally, an expansion features many new things for the smaller options (hair, faces etc, which has been covered by ANet for a long time now) available, and it be really cool if we got to see that here, as well.
And yes, I know the amount of work will be needed to fit all the armours to these new models… but to that I say: there are unavailable body models in the game already, so clearly there’s been some work done (certain repair vendors and Stefan Baruch comes to mind, see pic linked).

On the top of my head, I think one or two per race/gender would be more than enough, and wouldn’t require too much work.

What about you guys? What character customization options would you like to see for HoT?

P.S. Chest hair. Make it happen, please. If females get a cheek and underbite slider, give us a chest hair y/n please.

Can we stop making everyone GAY!

Who is this “everyone” you speak of?

There are the Sons of Svanir.

This, pretty much. An all-male faction of huge, muscular and angry men that have an extremely anti-female view point, and are repeatedly shut down and ousted out of their traditional society? Man, that reeks of frustration and we all know how to deal with that. So yeah, I’d wager a guess that a lot of the Sons of Svanir are, perhaps not mated for life, but at least in homosexual relationships. Or giant orgies. w/e.

If they introduce a gay male couple, I would most likely prefer it to be something simple… like those two dudes in Dragon Age: Origins who run a shop together.

No stereotypes here. I’m going to assume this isn’t trolling (though it kinda quacks like a duck).

1. Just because one does not want to have sex with a member of the opposite sex does not make them a misogynist moron.
2. Run a shop together…really? There are gay teachers and doctors and dock workers and toll collectors and police officers and soldiers and pilots and crane operators and programmers and grounds keepers and florists and hair dressers and anthropologists and artists and shop owners and … you get the idea.

One of the things art (and yes Virginia a computer game is art) does is hold up a mirror for us to see ourselves. This is what the OP is asking for: to see a fully fleshed out, well rounded character, flaws and all, that he can see himself in – not a flat, stereotypical, non-threatening place holder written for non-gay people.

1. I don’t think your reading comprehension is quite up top date today if you inferred that being gay leads to misogyny.
2. Have you played the game in question and met the NPCs I referred to? If you had, then you wouldn’t make such a disparaging comment that shop keepers aren’t amazing enough for you.

Tyrian Etymology

in Lore

Posted by: Mikhail.4961

Mikhail.4961

Theoretically, the origin of the word “dragon” in our world comes from the Biblical story of Satan.

While pdavis made an excellent case, I’ll add something to this: the oldest story that mentions a “dragon” or some sort of serpent as a force of evil/corruption in the world is the Epic of Gilgamesh where a serpent stole his immortality and it is, as of now, some 5000 years old. The serpent in the Garden of Eden however was (as far as I know), in the text that Hebrew tradition contributes to Moses who wrote Genesis, and that was almost one thousand years after Gilgamesh.
Now, the word itself “shaitan” (which became Satan) means Adversary, but in Hebrew tradition, the Satan (yes, it’s a title) was an office appointed by God to test faith. When Job, who had so much, lost everything, it was Satan who tested him: if Job failed in his faith, then it was faith based on prosperity, not true faith. The title itself has nothing to do with serpents (arguably the seraph were more reptilian).

Downside of this is that there is a kind of witch hunt going down..I was roaming wvw for daily purposes, evaded with Shortbow skill 3 upon stumbling on an enemy but dc’ed after that. Upon returning (yay for ssd drive ) , I got this whisper from someone who’s name shall remain hidden (although my fingers are itching to place it here!!) that he has reported me for speedhacking ! I explained to the player this was not the case, but sure enough, player blocked me..
How is ANet dealing with false allegations ? Any of you encountered this ?

Sadly true. A long while back (some two, perhaps three months), I was idly watching a group from my server fight two thieves and an ele from an enemy server, up in the northern most camp and the thieves were essentially running laps around the people from my server (two rangers, a mesmer and something else). The thieves were obviously Stealth specced (or at least proficient enough to weave in two leaps into a stealth field without getting hit) and the ele was very good at dodging. After ours got a sound thrashing, they complained in map chat about hackers etc, and I, sadly, laughed at them and said they didn’t hack. Usual retorts and insults followed, with the line “obviously hacking” being dropped all the time: apparently, having swiftness and stealth was hacking (one even said they had a thief so they knew the max duration of stealth)…
And this worries me. If a group of (quite honestly) unskilled players label better players as hackers because they can’t beat them by pressing a few keys and having numbers, aren’t we just adding fuel to the witch hunt and contributing to making the issue of finding the real hackers worse?

Chronomancer Confirmed

I don’t get why they use clocks as imagery and as part of the shield, though. Clocks do not measure time: they measure themselves. And it is rather bold to use time as a resource when Time is simultaneous, an intricately structured jewel that humans insist on viewing one edge at a time, when the whole design is visible in every facet.

Liadri, what power did she tap into?

She’s probably just has a necro main profession and a mesmer secondary profession.

Which would be odd, given what Angel McCoy said about people in GW2 time would prefer to master one profession over having a secondary (she used some silly analogy for it).

I am kind of hoping that she’s the precursor of what we’ll see of necromancers in HoT: those wells of darkness would make an interesting profession skill where the more time the enemy stand in them, the more damage they take or some such. Cause, as we know, necros are not in a good spot right now.

Measuring my character's height?

Simple math, really. In attached image 1, there’s a chart for the human height that someone’s already made (I calculated this on my own as well and got the same results). In attached image 2, you see the max/min height of the different races: you then calculate the difference between max and min, then divide that amount by the number of ticks available (16) in the height adjuster, to get the height of each tick.

Lets Chat: Revenant Masters of the Mist

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Mmmmmm… not entirely sold on this so far. It sounds like a sibling to the Guardian (a sort of Paladin derivative, I guess): a heavy armour powerhouse who, while not so fast, dishes out a lot of slow, but high, magic damage and controls boons and conditions. The colour scheme also looks… wrong. While the realms in the Mists may take whatever shape and form their rulers wish, the general proto-matter feels looks more like it focuses on whites, pale blues and that colour spectrum. That rift opened by the axe skill looks really out of place and gaudy. I mean, if we go so far as to say that Rytlock acquired these skills from the Hall of Heroes, the colour scheme still doesn’t make sense (HoH: primarily golds and yellows).

we incorporate the core feel of using the Mists, and your connection to them, into the skills

Nothing so far sounds very “the Mists” to me: what exactly does ANet define as the Mists? The proto-matter that is everything: past, present and future, physical and magical and all things? How is that incorporated into a move-able Wall of Reflection?

This profession doesn’t have access to weapon swap, but its legends more than make up for that, which you’ll read about below.

Eeeeh… weapon swapping is one of the most attractive things about GW2. The Ele circumvents this by essentially having 16 weapon skills through their Attunements, and the Engineer changes/augments his weapons through his utilities. But the Revenant only changes his utilities through his class mechanic, not his weapon skills. What happens when you face a Thief when you’ve got a hammer equipped? Unless changing legends also gives you an Engi like melee kit, you’re screwed. He’ll be cutting your face, whereas you… have some completely useless skills? A reflecting wall doesn’t mean a thing to melee damage.

“Slice into the Mists, creating an unstable rift. After a short duration, this rift will collapse in on itself, pulling in enemies.”

It doesn’t sound intense, it sounds exactly like an automated version of Mesmer Focus #4.

“Summon the power of the legendary demon to transform into a powerful avatar. Increase all attributes, and copy conditions to nearby foes every few seconds.”

Dervish shoutout, but can we expect the Revenant to be similar to the melee fighting, whirling storm of death that the dervish was? It sounds like you’re replacing the Gods with old legends, making the profession available for everyone, but forgetting exactly who and what made it what it is. Is the lore department chucking darts on a whiteboard again and it just “happens” to land on “the gods” every time? (Not saying that it should be the gods instead of the legends, but you know what I mean: humanity and their gods are getting the short end constantly)

Also, since Jalis is a legend to be summoned… does that mean Jalis has died in the time between GW1 and GW2? Fighting the destroyers is no longer on the table for the dwarves?

Taunt

Diminishing returns or this will be abused to no end.

This was just the tip of the iceberg. There are more weapons and legends coming with the revenant, but you’ll have to wait to find out more.

Let’s hope so, because so far, it isn’t looking all that good.

Finally, because it was last, I assume the picture at the bottom is invoking Glint: crystal-like effects, as well being a dragon that’s dead (thus legend-applicable) and against the ED.

[suggestion] More human female body types

I’d like more body models for both genders (and races). Something interesting comes to mind: many human male repair vendors, and most particularly the ghost of Stefan Baruch (charr ps), have a different body model than what’s available in character creation: they got larger forearms, waist etc. They look more the bodybuilder bear than the gymrat we’ve got.

Eh, I’ll come off as a pessimist and hater for this, but… this should’ve been implemented from the start. The traits presented are also very underwhelming and , how to say it… predictable.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Disappointed that scarlet died.

Alice, I notice that you apply pathos to your argument of “saving” and quite a bit of the ethos of our characters (and heroic NPCs), while forgetting something very, very important that I feel needs repetition:
Scarlet did not want to be saved. Scarlet is Scarlet, and what she did, didn’t do or would have done, would have all been her. An ED might’ve given her the initial push, but the rest? That’s Scarlet.

Then there’s the question whether she’d been able to handle being saved: to commit such acts, to have the blood of thousands on your hands and then be saved? That’s a betrayal against who you are and would likely lead to a spiritual collapse – and I doubt neither Scarlet or Ceara would have recovered from it.

So in the end, was it a mercy killing? Putting the mad mass murderer out of her misery? Does that make us less heroic? I don’t know. Saving perhaps countless people from her continued machinations vs the moral high ground of an ideal society is something we can debate when we get some proof that Tyrians don’t stone people with mental disabilities.

P.S. Stopping drill =/= turning off drill. Scarlet probably defended it to the last because she knew they couldn’t turn it off with the controls, but could probably damage it enough.

Mobility warriors are way too mobile

Hm, two things. Warriors, along with thieves and rangers, are probably the physically fittest professions in the game, as most of their weapon feats rely on the body, not magic (hence the exclusion of eles and guardians): so having the endurance and speed, kind of like Secretariat, to be fast and for extended periods of time, makes sense to me.

Secondly, I see the OP says that he should’ve been able to run away because he had FGS and it’s an elite… uhm, correct me if I’m wrong, but FGS isn’t designed to be an escape tool, is it? It’s a dps tool. That you can whrilwind and rush with small cooldowns is just a bonus.
