Spiteful Vigor and Reapers Protection are both counter pressure, using your heal at ~55% while taking damage having it drop to 50 for Spectral Armor then entering DS is why i take Spitefull Vigor and Reapers Protection is a wonderful combo starter.
I understand the effects of what going into spite will have on the build both options are viable both have their strengths and weakness. When your CC’d and reapers protection doesnt go off and everyone continues wailing on you your going to wish you had that extra defense and extra fear, When I’m not able to finish off my opponent in time before he recieves help from his teammate or runs away I’m going to regret not going into spite. Playstyle preference / team comp decision. That’s the beauty of this game really.

I understand what you’re saying but a little defense goes a long way. In my eyes in all builds its best to compromize somewhere for defense. If you’d rather have the bigger burst go for it, just dont excpect to stay alive as long or be able to counter being cc’d.
Both options are viable depends on which playstyle you prefer Kill or be Killed, or Counter Pressure.

How to play:
Wail of Doom is your bread and butter utility. You can litterally 100-0 opponents with them never getting a chance to respond.
Combos:
Apply pressure with scepter/dagger.
Switch to Axe and start applying heavy CC pressure, throw out that wail and the fun begins Auto attack > ghastly claw > when daze is about to wear off > DS Fear bait a stability or stun break > corrupt that stability if opponent used it. Try throwing your spectral wall in front of them while they’re feared so they cross it, as soon as fear is about to end pull them in again towards the wall for another fear. Ghastly claw should be back up use it again for damage.
Any time an opponent is feared / dazed you want to combine it with ghastly claws or auto attacks try to get in as much damage as possible during these moments. Getting the jump on your opponent is very very important
You can even do what i suggested in reverse using your fear / grab combos then ending it with wail of doom and ultimately golem charge.
There are so many possible combos on how to control your opponent, im just gonna use the one above as a general rotation.
As with all necro builds MOVEMENT AND POSITION IS KEY, If you fail with this build this is the 1st thing you will want to look at improving.

I tried this build with daggers it really is up to you which weapon set to use… Axe is just my weapon of choice as i find the positioning much more usefull than dagger.

Man do I love the “blame the players” crowd. Criticize game design elements? You’re entitled. Criticize a lack of professionalism? You’re stuck up. It’s somehow you’re fault, not theirs. Gotta love it.
Edit: I’m not saying the developers in the stream were unprofessional, as I’ve not seen it. But obviously there are some among us who feel they were. And of course those who feel that way are being attacked for their opinion by those who want to defend the game and its makers against all criticisms, legitimate of otherwise.
I just understand that most complaints are directly related to the dev’s personalitys and while yes they can go through some training to appear more “professional” it can’t really be helped. Its not the dev’s fault for having their own personality but it is the player base fault for reacting so sour to it.
“Acting like drunk 5 year olds” as someone phrased it isnt accurate at all, the goofiest thing i remember was at the beginning of the stream where 1 dev popped up in front of the camera which was silly but also not the end of the world.

Dhuumfire change is fine, its much more interesting this way. Putrid Explosion change is fine as well, but if they are currently looking into putrid explosion and bone minions in general please take into consideration cast time and actual summon animation.
Karl says on stream that theres no counter play but it takes the minions a ridiculous amount of time to actually be mobile! So much potential for counter play during these moments. They are also ridiculously slow to actually reach your target assuming you casted from range, again more potential for counter play I.E just ranging bone minions down before they get to you.

Removing Wurm from the game would hurt my mobility, tricks, tactics advantage so much. Also, no more Spectral Walk jumping/jumping puzzle insurance? Hell no
It would work exactly the same in jumping puzzles when u miss a platform nothing changes with how it works except it persists after life force regen effects wear off as long as your within its limit, which would be equivilant to how far you can normally teleport with spectral walk.
Sorry I wrote 1600yd radius with a question mark implying i wasnt sure how much range would be allowed and probably confused you with how i envision spectral walk working with my suggestion.

Ok I give up then because if I remember correctly one of the biggest complaints is how every class can do everything better. Either way dont really care if you guys agree, I know the changes I suggested would be for the best, or at least better than what we currently have. Anet’s used my suggestions before (Unholy feast removing boons and spectral changes) so I mainly write this for them.

From what I’ve just read, you want Spectral Walk to work like a Flesh Wurm works now.
My suggestion: Read minion’s descreption and just use Flesh Wurm.Unfortunately yes but its for the best, its not like you would lose range they could just measure how far one is able to travel with the current SW. My suggestion to your suggestion is remove wurm from the game.
As for Axe #2 – why should LF generation get consumed by damage you get during skill? Unecessary. If you want to tank with Life Force, use Death Shroud
Again its another reliability issue GC requires set up to use…which is fine but god kitten is it annoying….Mezmers bust out their channel and bam invuln, thief bust out theirs and evade, necros get cc’d and beat on. Atleast now there would be a defensive aspect to this attack like other classes have. Maybe just stability during channel is enough but it definitely needs some sort of defense.
As for Dark Path – in beta it was a ground teleport from what I’ve heard. Could be same now maybe.

If you want to make Life Blast pierce by default.. Well, I wouldn’t mind, because I’d be able to pick both Vital Persistance and Spectral cd reduction

Change to Spectral Grasp currently totally unnecessary – it’s a pull skill with purpose, it’s meant to prevent people from escaping from you. Also, it wouldn’t be really reflectable (still shift).
Thats not what its meant for in fact its terrible against any class that can escape well (which is just about every class but necro), its meant for surprise control and not meant to be used alone instead in combination with your other cc’s

First off, Axe as it is now, it doesn’t matter if it cleaved 10 targets, it would still be a really bad weapon in general. It needs a rework, not minor changes.
No it is a good weapon people dont understand it so dismiss it as a bad weapon the changes i suggest are on par with what other classes can do, if not worse.
WH changes don’t make sense. A PBAoE is way too strong, and the 5 skill already siphons LF, which works while in DS.
I know locust gives you LF in DS its my favorite ability, I remember a thread where people started whining how necro has no 1vX scaling and all i could think about was locust swarm coupled with spectral anything. The cone is so wonky that I cant even begin to imagine why you wouldent want this changed. I’ve used it directly infront of targets and have had it miss completely. Most of necro mechanics and abilitys are super wonked out

No. Stop asking for base buffs to everything, base buffs are not helpful, they only encourage power creep. DS 1 is very strong already.
While maybe changing 1 and 3 is a bit much 2 needs to go, and i can see so many plays being made with it especially coupled with how i suggested spectral to change.
Spectral Grasp
No. It needs some increase in reliability, but that is it.
Thats almost impossible with how it functions right now, how many times do they need to increase its reliability before they realize its worthless. Mezmer totaly kittens all over this pull. Its time to give necros something that is on par with other classes.
Spectral Walk could use a slight change to being better, but it needs that on its LF generation, not its movement (which is fine). Reverting it back to its old form would be way better, and give it distinct differentiation from SA.
The problem with this is its best to use it in DS so you gain life force while taking damage then forced to jump out to use its teleport function, If you dont teleport you pretty much wasted a primary function of the ability. Allowing it to persist would give necros much more control over when they want to teleport. It would be a half nerf half buff situation but I would love the extra choice of being able to stay in DS and continue what i was doing without losing my ability to port out.
Spectral Armor
No. This skill is amazing now.
I remember making a thread about how spectral armor and walk needed to regen LF in DS, and im pretty sure you disagreed. I guess you can thank me for that.
Plague Signet
No. Read above.
Lets say your in wvw running with your team sticking tight, condis are constantly being transferred from your teammates to your self you really want to clear them but getting close enough to a target will most likely ensure your death. Why must we limit reliability on such a strong utility. Another half buff half nerf situation…a nerf to 3-4 seconds on random conditions being applied to your target vs the buff of gaining boons on command something which necros have been asking for.
Locust Signet
No. This heals more than a real healing skill if used right.
If used right is the key phrase here, in every other situation its garbage again why limit reliability.

2. Something needs to be done about the floating hand, Some cool plays can come out of this like when u release it and they turn the corner but you still teleport to them. That aspect needs to stay but it needs to be done differently.
I was thinking of something like applying a dark path debuff on a target that bleeds / chills etc but after 3-4 seconds it explodes dealing damage and pulling up to 5 targets to you (Perhaps with a blast finisher?). Prior to that you can cancel the effect by using it again and it teleports you to the person with the debuff instead.
3. Ground target fear
Spectral Control – 2nd Utility Spectral Grasp
Switch places with the target, Spectral grasp appears after Spectral Control
Spectral Walk – Teleport Utility does not end when spectral walk life force regen effects end (Limit range you can teleport maybe with how far you can run with SW up. Once out of radius effect ends)
Spectral Armor – Add reflect or retaliation
Plague Signet – Condi -> Boons
Locust Signet – Increases Life Siphon healing,
Active: Steal health Gain stability and locust swarm (locust swarm siphons life, persists through deathshroud)

Healing in DS needs to happen it ruins team support during intense situations where ele’s and guards need to throw their heals out but you also know you need to enter DS to survive. We can risk it and not enter DS to attempt to get healing from our teammates but more often than not we need to enter it. Maybe allow healing to persist through ds for 1st 10 seconds?

Thanks for the tips, finally got around to testing it at the pvp golems. It seems like you control Life blast trajectory with the right mouse button like you said. Very odd Anet would never mention this to players. A combination of both target and non target life blast will be useful to me so thank you! Going to have to get used to not having an overhead view lol.

That last part sounds fun Bhawb! I’ve been using it with corrupt boon and spectral grasp just pulling them in for a second fear after they already crossed it and corrupt in case that stability comes out. That coupled with warhorn and the control you have is beyond insane.

Life Blast can fire without a target. Imagine a crosshair on the middle of your screen, then pan your camera angle down with right-click and use it. Your projectile will shoot out over the ground, and if you connect with someone’kittenbox appropriately, it will do damage.
This is much easier with Life Blast than with Lich Form’s auto, because that projectile is really, really weird. It seems to fly way above people’s heads and hit them, and if you fire it through an enemy, it misses. However, LB is definitely something you can play around with and try just manually firing into a mob.
However, for your first point, spot on. Trying to find the red target arrow in a mob is far more difficult than it has to be.
Does LB pierce after its 1st target when firing it without target? I know I can fire it without target but ive seen it shoot diagonal into the ground il try the camera angle thing but it still seems rather impractical in intense situations.

Hi there,
Im going to make this quick and suggest a functionality improvement this trait desperately needs.
1. Gold target marker, the red target just isnt practical when fighting against a sea of red names especially when enemys start going down and the downed symbol looks just like the target marker. Its very difficult to know what you targeted and where that target is moving.
Removed the other 2 suggestions, Cogbyrn thanks for the tips. It seems like you can control the trajectory of life blast when you dont have a target. I ended up taking off auto attack on life blast and going to experiment with it. This extra option is nice, I just wish Anet would polish it a little more :\

Posted this vid a while ago, its me playing as a healer necro with an experimental build 0/10/0/30/30. This was a completely experimental trial and was absolutley not maximized to its potential, but overall its good! Ele’s cant always switch to water when called for since they have other roles to fulfill as well so this is where this type of necro comes in handy.
Currently we have 1 necro running a much more optimized build ascended celestial/cleric armor /zerker cleric accessories weapon swap heals etc. The constant transfusions coming out periodically makes all the difference in some fights, shes an absolute beast.

Here’s the build I’ve been playing with in pvp, its focused on DS uptime and countering burst with retaliation. I’ve 2v1’d in this build its very powerfull if played correctly. Immobilize people in WoS and enter deathshroud for some insanely fast vulnerability stacking all while spamming lifeblast as well as countering damage taken with retaliation.

Necro Life blast piercing in wvw is really wonky and requires absolute perfect targeting…..with 50+ characters on screen tab target is only so efficient and attempting to click a target for efficient life blast is challenging….any chance on just letting life blast release on a path in front of the necro with out requiring a target? Also necros are still very strong please dont give into the amount of crying and misunderstandings of the necro class on the necro forums.

Never Ending Darkness
Give dark path a 2nd function after teleporting to target: Use again to teleport back to the target immobilizing the target originaly hit by dark path.
Dark path ele > ele blinks away hit 2 again and appear on top of ele immobilizing.

My entire guild is highly skilled and we dont get bored…. We still want players who can think for themselves situational awareness and appropriate positioning all comes from being a skilled player and knowing your class well. Yes of course we are looking for competent players but it doesn’t need to stop right there. As for 100 man zergs I know its a just a rhetorical number you came up with but what we attempt to do requires you to be skillfull in the class you play or you will quickly die and be useless to us.
Ever try taking on 35+ with 12 and having the fight come down to the wire, or just straight up being victorious? Those situations require skilled players we dont blob we anti blob. If any 6 year old can do it why dont we see more guilds willing to fight outmanned and be successful at it?
I’ve got a couple of PM’s but no apps yet still looking for a couple of necro’s.

Passive: Persists through DS, Gain health when struck
Active: Apply weakness to yourself for 20 seconds,All life siphons have 100% crit chance for 20 seconds
Initial Heal: 4k
Aoe Life siphon pulse every second for 10 seconds healing yourself and allies (similar to how wells siphon life only in an area around the necro)
I would also change signet of locust to
Passive: Apply cripple and siphon life when hit,
Active:
Causes Locust swarm to Siphon life, inflicts the target with a locust swarm siphoning health for 10 seconds jumps to the closest target up to 5 targets.

While our server as a whole may not fight outmanned, we as a guild specifically go out and look for these fights. Our guild leader is BG born and raised so moving isnt really an option for us as we are loyal. Yes queue times may be bad but we slightly alleviate this with map sign ups during NA prime usually securing space for our members to enter the map. Yes we still get queued from time to time but it works out for the most part. Looking for players to look past any bad connotations that BG may have.

Guild sounds perfect for what I’m wanting, currently a pretty active Necro roamer but want to go to more organised group centred gameplay now.
Only problem is I’m from EU (play on NA servers currently on JQ). My times would be really weak during the week but would be ok on the weekends. Which guessing would be a problem with some activity you would be wanting.
What are your average playtimes? We usually play 4-6pm pst server time depending on how early we start, 3-4 times a week with our most active days being the weekend

I have been noticing bugs with skills like spectral grasp not working, DS 1 not hitting anything when aimed directly at target(no miss, evade, blocks, 0s, or blinds on self), lich having that same issue, corrupt boon being blocked as well.
YES ok i thought i was the only 1, I run alot of WvW and use unyielding blast to Life blast multiple targets in blobs. I target the furthest enemy i can and fire away….I dont see any numbers appear after a full cast in range.

Spectral grasp has been stuck in beta mode since launch, a couple projectile speed increases and trajectory changes have been made but the overall functionality of the ability is really bad. Its faults show heavily in grouped fights where launching the projectile randomly is just as good as picking a target and trying to grab him. Assuming it hits the right target due to terrain issues that target may never be pulled to you.
Worst pull in the game, I used to think it was good for wvw walls and towers but mesmer focus pulls kittens on it.
Anet needs to change how this ability works, preferably making it pierce, pulling towards you whatever it pierced through.
The bug that has really been getting to me and currently extremely kitten ed at Anet for since its been around for months now…is the UI ability delay when leaving DS. This is the number 1 cause of death for me in pvp /wvw. Leaving Ds expecting to be able to heal immediatly, instead I’m greeted with a blank ui for 1-2 seconds taking damage I should have healed through and ultimately dieing soon after.

Necro can achieve attrition if you build for it.
I can last pretty long against most professions via DS and siphons out of DS.
The only thing I would change with your build is to take 5 from Curses and put it into Death. I would much rather have a passive 200 power over 0-8% damage based on my targets conditions.

Is what i am currently looking at. Not quite sure about the Sigils or the Utilities though.
looks good i had the same build with knights gear, sentinels seems interesting, Target wells is almost a must though in wvw. Depends on what your tying to accomplish really but stats look fine.

Have you thought about Axe training? An increase of damage all the time (according to playing around in Mists) as well as decrease in Axe #2 for faster DS regen and Axe #3 for the Retal

You are absolutely correct, its one of the more customizable traits in this build so feel free to use WS.

I wouldn’t doubt it, this build existed before but vital persistence buff made it even stronger. It’s a bit more “user friendly” now so to speak. When making the build I kept thinking back to previous things Anet devs mentioned about necros. The most helpfull of which was the mentioning that “We want players to regret ever engaging in a fight with a necro”. They also mentioned something about a certain bunker axe build which really got me thinking and eventually realizing that death shroud and retaliation are the perfect pair and utilizing them together is the key to playing an attrition necro in pvp. I was a little hesitant in releasing this build as I was afraid of fighting myself lol.

Nice suggestions! Like i said it is a very customizable build and there are many valid choices. Although i wouldn’t get rid of death shivers, it kind of pulls the build together. Rage runes alone are perfect for this build but i do like the boon duration. Target the weak synergizes well with death shivers. I was also messing around with a master of terror variant reapers prot, fear duration etc. Gl and have fun!
Well of power is the better choice but i just love that signet with target the weak lol, You can even do WoS for more vuln stacks in DS, it requires a bit of seting up but it works wonders.

Hey all,
In light of the new balance changes I have been able to create a customizable build that I’ve been working on for a while now or atleast with this particular playstyle which is uncommon to most necros.
Switched out staff for d/d- axe/wh, I find that going d/d axe/wh allows me to flow from offensive to defensive playstyles rather smoothly****

I could have done better against the 2nd thief 1v1 using more dagger auto’s and healing earlier, after re-watching it it was apparent I should have healed instead of switching to dagger. Not the best opponents but i hope it displays what im trying to accomplish with the build.
update-Moved 5 points in DM for spectral mastery, using runes of the sanctuary.

This build requires patience and a general good sense of necro cooldowns to use effectively. This means knowing when its appropriate to leave DS, heal, and use utility’s intelligently.
How to play: There are 2 focuses to this build staying in DS for as long as necessary, and knowing how to counter burst damage / deal with condi’s since this is a low condi removal build.
Retaliation is Death Shrouds best friend. When your in DS you want as much retaliation up on you as possible, knowing how to appropriately apply retaliation is key.
DS regeneration ability tier:
1:Locust swarm
2:Spectral Walk
3: Spectral Armor
Make sure one of the above is applied before jumping into DS. Locust swarm will increase in effectiveness the more targets its able to hit granting more life force so this is your go to for life force regen, perfect for entering group fights.
Enter DS do your ds things then spam 1….I know….lame….but its for the best, when you run out of LF apply the next ability available and jump right back into DS (remember to apply retaliation before entering if possible).
Canceling DS before it runs out will give you full CD, letting it run out gives you no CD and you can jump right back in after filling some life force. So take care when deciding to leave DS because leaving to early can lead to a quick death.
With this build you want to get hit you want to take damage, but you want to make sure your in DS with one of the above abilitys with retaliation while thats happening.
Certain points and utlitys can be changed / moved. For instance removing the 10 in spite and adding it to curses and soul reaping for banshees / spectral mastery. I enjoy the retaliation in DS over banshees / shorter spectral cd’s but its your choice.
This is not a burst spec, this is pure attrition the more the enemy attacks you the worse off they are. The longer you’re around your opponent in DS the more damage they take via death shivers. The more condis on him the more damage you do.
Adventure rune / energy sigil combo is perfect for necro pvp and increases necro survivability dramatically. Know how to manage endurance via weapon swaps and heals. 100% endurance almost instantly is possible after double dodging. Knowing how to manage health / endurance is also a key component to this build. Stuff like Dodge weapon swap dodge heal Dodge Dodge DS is possible, while may be a bit overkill such endurance management can be the difference between life and death.
Something I’ve noticed about Vital persistance and this build in general, Life force flows really well with endurance often allowing me to exhaust my endurance in DS and waiting for life force to dry up and my endurance to fill right back up usually hitting 50% when life force fully drains allowing for another dodge in case i need it. Prior to the buff this was never really the case even with a similar build.

Besides nova I think their best use are wvw aoe damage soak….and i kind of think this is what anet intends it to be. I believe aoe is 5 targets max? These little buggers would help a ton with negating that damage if it works like that.
I still think it should be tied into tainted shackles 1 jagged per tether

I like support necro, but I think this seems to have a much larger impact on the well side of support rather than the healing side of support, which makes me wonder if all that healing power is really worth it. Imagine if you threw in some zerker trinkets, and how much harder you would hit (and thus help down) with all that guardian might.
I watched and just didn’t see the kind of healing numbers I might see from an equivalently geared guardian or elementalist. Seems like smart play with wells and any stats would be just about as good.
I enjoyed it though, it looked about like what happened when I ran clerics in a support build (though I took 20 in Death magic to get bigger regen area coverage). Very dangerous to get covered in conditions in this build, and very reliant on someone else to pull them off you. (sorry putrid mark.. RIP)
This was a test run of the builds playstyle with cleric armor water runes- pvt/celestial accessories. Definitely not optimized but it still worked decently. I may be wrong but i think life transfer crits effect transfusion (Again could be completely off with this) but i have seen 4k+ heals after some 1.3 2.2k’s heals. I want to test it with Magi gear as well.
I normally run shroud fighter builds with target wells 30/10/0/0/30 knights/cav LB pierces for zerg busting. Recently switched to 10/10/20/0/30 soldier/zerk cav/zerk accessories for death shivers which is beyond amazing and under utilized imo.
All of our builds rely on each other to support each other so condi clears arent a big issue. We tend to fight 2:1 3:1 odds and are often victorious.

Nope,I do remember them saying in one of the 1st state of the games that healing in DS is something they wanted to look into but that never really happened. O well still think the signet should be heal when struck in DS.
