I’ll add the suggestion to the list, I’m aware of the trait that increases healing. I tend to like getting the most out of my utilities by making them stronger via traits.
I looked over footage from my stream using x/4/6/4/x and I am considering switching to 4/x/6/4/x. I do need a damage increase but I’m skeptical about losing the spectral duration, but as I looked over the videos I realized I’m mostly wasting the extra duration either by not being hit or already at full health or full life force. I use dg/dg for the extra condi peel (since I’m suggesting vamp signet)and weakness. Its preference really or depends on what your fighting. Consume conditions works just as good so feel free to use that and slap on focus if needed.
When I make builds, offhands / certain traits are often interchangeable depending on what your fighting. Nothing is set in stone, I like to give ideas for others to build off of.

Very interesting cog! I really like the plague signet addition and the trait changes definitely will increase damage output.
I’ve always been a fan of double melee weapons especially in power builds as I always felt staff really hurt our sustained dps and always felt out of place.
I would switch out near to death for unyielding blast so heavys dont body block your life blasts, and possibly a rage sigil on dagger, its usefull when your able to switch weapons auto attack and haste stomp someone. Solid build for keeping up pressure!
Dhuumfire being king is just my opinion but its based off alot of trial and error in trying to maximize dps and keep sustain. I have tried a similar build to this although i stuck to double spectral,, my biggest problem was survivng without locust swarm and without the condi peel from staff, but the plague signet addition pretty much covers that so thanks for the idea!
Using dhuumfire with flame legion runes and 1 smoldering sigil is pretty deadly. I’ve been using 6/4/0/0/4 standard terrormancer but with axe and put a little more emphasis on getting fire out. Dhuumfire > Fear > Ghastly Claws is extremely deadly most players cant come back from it, and is something you couldent really control before the change to dhuumfire.
Solid build overall I will definitely be using it.

its not a dueling build. if you play it as a dueling build you will lose 1v1s. However. You can survive against most classes long enough for someone to come help you. You really cannot be alone with this build. You can take home point but someone will have to come help you eventually. But you really shouldnt be on home youve got enough swiftness that you should be moving mid to home. Now i know most of the time this isnt possible since as ive learned everyone always expects the necro to be home.
You need DS for this build to work. You swap to staff when you hit ds. Once they pull you out of DS your most likely riddled with conditions or on the ground…. You know what this build is pretty self explanatory…. Im not going to tell you anything that im doing that is something special… cuz im not. I pop a spectral go into DS hit 5 3 and spam 1. Save 4 for when LF is low and your enemy has used his knockdown or stun. Space out your stunbreaks Try hitting warhorn 5 before swapping to staff and going into DS….
10/10 spot on, I would add take note of when you proc the 50% health spectral armor mostly when your being bursted if your not stunned during the burst try to time your heal so your health hits below 50% right when your heal goes off.
The build is really meant to support your teammates on the sidelines the problem is most damage comes from lifeblast which are dodged or is just to slow to really pressure anything. The spectrals are there to counter burst if your being pressured. If your having trouble with staff I suggest taking soul marks to make the sideline fighting more productive in terms of lf regen. Staff auto + marks is a nice LF builder. I ended up dropping well of power and going for offensive corrupt boon to further assist in taking down enemys.
The biggest problem with this build is the damage output. If your being pressured you can live but eventually are forced out, if you cant handle the pressure or teammates not supporting you. Dagger auto’s are your friend here slap a rage sigil on it and its even better, but at the same time its really hard to find moments to pressure opponents with dagger auto’s without being mauled by a warrior peeling for their team or them popping invuln’s / stealth.
The build pretty much forces you to use your spectrals perfectly as wasting them will cause your death.
As nexed mentioned earlier the build has trouble against good players that will just chain cc you untill your out of ds then continue to burst you down.
I opted out of this build as DS is as clunky as can be and as much as I want to focus my build around it both the meta and the class will not allow it, as of right now dumbfire is king.

I came up with a build months ago that is pretty much this except i opted for retal pressure in DS going for counter burst, and I use dg and axe MH. I think it was what superspankeh was referring to.

With the current meta staff is the best option for the condi clear and staff auto LF regen. I would switch retal on heal to remove condi when entering DS. Soul Marks is probably your best option as well but its depends on playstyle.

The uptime with spectral allows for better life force regeneration as well as allows for better Sp. walk peels.
I stated at the end of the post 2 points in BM can go into SR for better spectral utilization, as I was just testing the regeneration up time.
I chose WS because I prefer it over chilling, feel free to use chilling if you feel it’s necessary.
I’m currently testing out multiple variations to this build.

Cleric Bunker and Spectral Bruiser are great builds and in theory should work. The reality is though every other class brings more to the table and these builds require help from teammates while other classes can do the same with no further help from teammates. I’ve almost given up on necromancer builds and current meta viability which is one of the reasons I was late in updating this thread.
The well bomber build is my favorite out of the 3 and I really wanted it to work with Cavalier but Soldier is the way to go with this build in tpvp.
Nexed recently revived the spectral bruiser build in his post but it seems he to is having trouble, its a hit or miss depending on opponents really.
Working on condi / axe hybrid that has the best burst potential out of any other necro build IMO. I released it a couple months back but I will revive it once again when I’m finished with it.
Anet wants us to hug our enemys and stick to them fighting to the end getting stronger as we go but in reality we are 100% sideline fighters that get weaker as the fight continues especially when the strat is “Focus the necro first” everytime without fail. :\

Yup I’m convinced after looking through this thread that I’m the only necro who favors axe.
The biggest problem I see with axe is its difficulty in usage. Its rough getting those full channel ghastly claws out with everyone constantly moving, it really is a clunky skill. The auto attack should cleave and we should be able to melee things in front of us with axe 1 without a target.
In wvw its pretty much equivalent of being in melee range so its barely a range weapon in that aspect.
Even with all its downfalls I still love this weapon, and I think the only change I would like to see is getting rid of the channel on ghastly claws. Making it a 1 1/2 second cast and keep the claw animation.
Axe is beast when it comes to life force regen its all about timing and positioning yourself for ghastly claws, in pvp that is…. in pve its a lost cause i guess given the pve “meta”
Theres even a rotation for it with near to death Gc > Ds > 5 Life blast > Exit Ds > 3 autos > repeat
or GC > 3 Lb> 3 axe autos > GC works too

I know it seems strange but it works very well, dagger autos are really strong with this build. I know the power is low and the condi damage isnt quite what people are used to but this build is pretty much anti bunker, dishing out constant boon rips. If you coordinate burst with your team bunkers dont stand a chance. It really shines in foefire mid fights.
Its customizable to fit your playstyle as well. The trait choices are personal choices as I would assume most people would take terror over spectral attunement seeing as how i put spectral wall and nightmare runes, or MoC for corrupt boon. Its all preference but i find spectral attunement just works better for me.

Warriors running zerker and rangers running carrion are considered bunkers? Guardians with 2400 armor are considered bunker?
Also, take a look at the approximate armor/health ratios on APeX members:
Morfeus – 2400 armor on Guardian
Hman – 2500 armor on Warrior
Chubbs Z – 2500 armor, 13800 hp on Elementalist
Anas Tarcis – 3000 armor, 26000 hp on Warrior
Nnight – 2400 armor on RangerOne legitimate bunker in Tarcis, two supports, two damage.
But yeah, 5 bunkers.. right.It’s like getting into a LoL tourney and whining about how teams that don’t play 5 AD carries are boring to watch. It’s ridiculous.

Same here Jasher I found the node fights in NA really interesting and constant nail biter watching for who made the 1st mistake in the fights btwn Apex and kpz. It was fun seeing NA get the shake down it needed to move the meta forward. Hopefully more teams start popping up and interest rises to take down those at the top.
I just wish that players would complain less and try harder.

Choose your words carefully, who are you to say what anything should look like? Talentless? Riskless? Don’t bother to mention NO ONE changed builds after losing to apex or kpz. If anything pvp in this game should
have constant build switching to better deal with your opponent, introduce counter play via build swapping but no one does this they just rather fail repeatedly and then blame the opponents comp on being cheese.
I rather enjoyed watching kpz and apex go at it with similar comps as any mistake on either side meant failure.
I couldn’t sit through EU as it was tons of zerker/conditions spam, fights were over as soon as they started. Even saw a complete zerk necro running wells who was dead for the majority of the match. Very uninteresting.
I like my long drawn out boxing matches where fights are determined by skill and not by how fast you can take somone out.

I’ve experienced dropped frames as well but only in windowed mode, if I put it in windowed then click on my other screen my for drops to 15 and can’t be fixed until I do full screen.

Wow can we stop using the term “Bunker Comp” you guys are talking about a composition that didn’t exist in this tourny, how many times do they have to explain they are all built to support each other. No one other than tarcis was running anything close that could be consider bunker.
The worst thing about this whole confusion was the shout caster’s inability to truly see what made APEX so strong, rotations, player mechanics, group support, organization. Instead all we heard out of their mouths were sighs and bunker comp bunker comp it’s this bunker comp, bunker meta etc etc…..

I tried many blood magic builds in spvp and all felt subpar to builds like the 30/10/0/0/30 or even 20/20/0/0/30.
With the new patch going into deathmagic for unholy sancturary will probably even give better sustain then life leach builds ever have…
There’s really no point in explaining my build or how to tank dmg via life siphons since everything will change and be stronger in a couple days, if you’re still curious feel free to msg me in game.
Also I don’t think siphons are in a good spot they definitely need the buff they are receiving, however they are the reason why many perceive the blood magic trait line as a whole to be weak even when it offers many useful traits.

I spent a few days playing this spec in WvW (mostly roaming) last week and it was quite fun. The following are my observations. (I only had exotic gear and didn’t use any food, so take this with a grain of salt)
This is a VERY tanky build.
I was running full berserkers and comfortably tanking warriors and thieves as long as I had LF generation up in DS.This build has difficulty with sustain classes
Despite being (with the possible exception of MM) the closest necros can come to a sustain spec, it cannot regenerate the health you (will slowly) lose. Couple this with the fact that you sacrifice all your (already sub-par) burst to maintain LF through spectral skills and you can feel totally powerless against high-sustain classes like elementalist and guardian.I still feel like a ping-pong ball
I’m not used to PvP, so this might just be me, but I tried to play a few hotjoin games with this build and just got knocked around when there was more than one person on a point.
Full disclosure: while I think I play necro decidedly above average in WvW, I’m at best average at dodging, which is much more important in PvP than WvW.#bringbackshade
While it doesn’t feel as strong as the condition, MM and power specs that are currently standard for necromancers, replacing foot in the grave with shade could easily put it in contention for a place as the fourth viable (but still balanced) necromancers spec.Thanks for a cool build! I feel much less pigeonholed into my condi spec now.
Yes it definitely does get countered by other sustain builds, playing around your heal cd is absolutely necessary knowing when to back out and how to stall until your next heal is crucial or you wont sustain…. This is one of the reasons I really feel necros should have some type of healing in DS.
I havent used it much in WvW I use axe/focus – staff 30/10/xx/30 focus/ axe traits and chill of death woc wos corrupt boon for team play 15+man groups. If im solo i do 20/20/xx/30 with spectral utilities/cb. I use 10/20/20/0/20 for small man groups in wvw.
Necromancer will always be a pinball even with foot in the grave and sanc runes

While I like the idea of the reduced cooldown on DS for making exiting DS a little less painfull I think you’re better off taking vital persistance.
The build is rather selfish which I try to avoid unless I’m purely doing hotjoins. I really like the fact that you are balancing around soldier amulet by jacking up both crit chance and crit damage giving you stats that the amulet does not apply. This imo is the correct way to make a build rather than going all or nothing with a single stat (full power full condi builds) the necro community needs to learn how to move away from those builds so in that regard I respect this build alot.
I still think retal / deathly shivers is the way to go for builds specializing in life force gain as it is counter pressure and incentive to have enemies back off you in team fights, something which you lose to gain 10% crit chance / damage. Never forget to keep your teammates in mind when building unless its for spvp.

Hey,
I was trying to recreate something I saw myself do in pvp with life blast where I shot dark path queued up a life blast ->teleported then did another life blast, the queued up LB flew over my head and hit my target at the same time as my next life blast.
During the testing I noticed something strange with staff auto range, it seems to have more than 1200yd range or life blast has less than 1200yd I’m not to sure whats going on here but here’s a video.
I do the lifeblast thing at the end.

Spectral Attunement is non-optional IMO, so I’m currently using 20/20/0/0/30.

Really can’t decide on runes. If Svanir didn’t glitch out after each death I’d go with them (that 5s freeze, mmmhmmm). I’m currenly using Ogre, but there’s got to be an interesting set which doesn’t bug out after death. I’ve just not found it yet.
Also – I’ve gone with piercing LB instead of 20% CD reduction. I’m not sure how it’s working just yet – the vuln helps the team obvs, but the nice thing is unless someone dodges they can’t just run back into the zerg and hide/hide behind a pet/behind a teammate.
I mainly WvW, so piercing is better than CD (lots of LF from incidental deaths). In sPvP, I think the 20% cooldown is more important.
I like the idea of Deathly Shivers, but the low application rate and the fact you have to go 20 points deep into Death Magic (which has 2 junk minor traits for LB builds) sucks too much.
Yup I agree about DM traits but DSh increasing DS functionality is still very appealing to me. It gives a new spin to necros role in team fights, but yes DM traits are shameful.
I use 30/10/0/0/30 with reapers touch axe training and chill of death in wvw soldier/zerk/calv piercing is way to good in wvw to pass up, although aegis totally owns this trait lol.

While I know what your saying you also have to consider vuln works toward teammate dmg as well, also removing spectral duration traits decreases your uptime when being pressured thus having less lifeblast to pump out, but the dmg difference may make up for it if you do crit. I do like your build with valk amy though.

5 seconds of aoe blind in which players may escape from or 12 seconds of life force regen in DS? You have to remember necro and this build in particular is a Healing game and if you want to add wod just remove one of the wells no need to remove spectral utilitys as they are what makes this build work.
Your playstyle must reflect your current healing cooldown and absorbing as much damage as possible before your heal is up is a big focus of this build and necro in general.
Unholy feast and locust swarm synergize with each other better than dg/wh for the retaliation before jumping into deathshroud for the life force regen, banshees wail is perfect for getting off both unholy feast and locust swarm cast without being intterupted / taking dmg. Also dagger is a up close melee weapon which could require you to throw out your blind / weakness when moving in.
Dark armor is supposed to mitigate damage and it is flawed because of the range aspect of channels, I.E your not supposed to be getting hit when channeling but rather supposed to be hit when in DS. DS is your damage mitigation mechanic.
The reason I say its better with full life siphon is because you have something on top of the dark armor backing it up making it more useful for damage mitigation especially with dg #2.
Remember 25 points in DM is not worthless without high toughness think of it as a balance mechanism, either way this build originally had 25 in curses then I moved it to 25 in DM thanks to suggestions on this thread then finally it was clear and obvious that spectral mastery was the better choice.
You can’t remove Deathly Shivers from the build or your increased up time in DS is literally useless. Remember that the more you stay around your opponent in DS the more damage they take which means retaliation gets a nice boost in dmg as well.
This makes it so being around or even hitting/pressuring a necromancer will backfire

Dark armor is useless it really is no good unless you go full blood magic / siphons.
With your trait choice you lose everything that makes you able to tank dmg and deal dmg at the same time in DS which is the main point of this build.
If you want more dmg just slap on zerker no need to go further than that with this build.
I’m going to make a giant post with more build ideas as i feel the necro community is in great need to veer away from pure condi pure power builds that are misrepresenting the class.
This build is extremely viable and I encourage those who read the post to atleast try it out and see how its “supposed” to work in the video I posted although not the best representation of what the build is capable of I felt it showed what the builds purpose and play style was like

Wishlist:
- Spectral walk default 10s duration, 15s with trait.
Acceptable, although I would add teleport function does not end when LF regen effect ends but only within a certain radius from the activation point I.E run out of the radius and lose SW teleport, the radius would be the same as the furthest amount of yards you can currently run with how SW is now.
- Remove Dumbfire. Replace with a power-centric trait (AoE bite on dagger 1 attack 3 perhaps). WE DO NOT WANT OR NEED BURNING.
I think im the only one ok with dhuumfire although i never choose it
- Change 25pt Spite to proc at 40% health. Max 1 stacks/s, duration 15s.
Trait shouldn’t be might we have reapers might that blows this out of the water at 1st tier

To much, as a user and believer in deathly shivers this trait is on point
- Cast time for WoP is now instant. Does not grant 1s stability.

- 25pt Curses trait now gives 1% more condition damage for each condition you are suffering.
This trait is fine
- Death Shroud no longer locks out abilties after exiting.
All I ask for
- Can see cooldown timers in Death Shroud.
Quality of life improvement, although I am now fluent in knowing my heal cooldown 100%
- Axe 3 is blast finisher, WH 4 is blast finisher, Life Blast is 20% projectile finisher.
Been saying that about axe since launch Wh4 needs to be aoe radius Could be usefull but lifesteal wouldn’t work

Necro balancing has indeed been laughable, but lets not get off topic here.
This UI lockout / delay whatever you may call it seems random and does not happen everytime you exit. Sometimes it happens when i force exit DS, sometimes it happens when i let it drain out. Sometimes its 1/2 second sometimes upwards to 2 seconds, very very random indeed.

I could have done better against the 2nd thief 1v1 using more dagger auto’s and healing earlier, after re-watching it it was apparent I should have healed instead of switching to dagger. Not the best opponents but i hope it displays what im trying to accomplish with the build.

I’ve suggested something similar but I switched up Dark Path instead.
I suggested Dark Path should be a debuff that ticks down and when it hits 0 it explodes pulling up to 5 targets (maybe reduced to 2-3) around the target with the debuff.
Secondary mechanic would cancel the explosion effect but teleport you directly on top of the player that previously had the debuff.
This way players with debuff either isolate themselves or they risk having their teammates interrupted and pulled.
I had other suggestions regarding spectral walk / grasp which would synch well with my version of dark path.
But it will never happen

Im afraid that this may be the case, if it is i’m definitely quitting the class and moving on probably leaving the game until they decide to eliminate it (if working as intended) and i’ve been a day 1 necro supporter.
Noble our class actually works fairly well without all the amenities that the other classes possess. The problem a majority of necros are facing is the All or Nothing concept when it comes to build making (mainly pvp wvw). I will admit blood magic is garbage as of right now, but at the same time people dont understand how to and when to tank damage via life siphons so the build ends up falling flat. (I’ve literally had it so my health stays above 95% via life siphons but it still needs tweaking)
There are a variety of builds including shroud fighter attrition, hybrid control builds, minion master boon rip builds, Life siphon tank well builds, support healing builds.
Unfortunately most choose to go MAX condi dmg or MAX power/crit and miss out on learning how to correctly use other utilitys. The view on the necro forums about how the class performs is a bit skewed but at the same time holds some merit as many of our mechanics are indeed clunky / hard to use.
Necros in wvw need a mobility boost, whether or not ANET agrees or disagrees necros absolutely need it in WvW. Trying to run with a guild filled with leaps and teleports and all of the necros are left behind and force our group to halt and wait for the slugs to catch up (yes thats my main issue with necro mobility in wvw). Unacceptable game design.
Overall I will be happy with this 1 simple UI fix.

Enough is enough patch after patch after patch waiting for a
Necromancer:
Leaving death shroud no longer causes utility’s and heals to lock out
I feel as if this is either an intended screw you necros mechanic or devs are simply not aware of the issue.
I have messaged both Josh Davis and Jon Chaplan in game about the issue without acknowledgement… grouch may have been afk but I know chap was there.
This bug breaks the necro profession and needs fixing asap.
Im making sure someone sees this and it is addressed.

There exists a bug within the necromancer class that completely breaks it and has yet to be addressed in over 6 months! (Maybe longer maybe less)………………………….
You guys witness a game breaking bug in a tournament and it is addressed in the following patch (Warrior Riposte) it has been complained about over and over in the necro forums but still nothing.
After exiting DS you are greeted by a 1-2 second utility and heal lockout which often results in death!
This is completely unacceptable especially since we’ve had to endure this profession breaking bug for so long.
Get it fixed ANET
