Or exchange Gold for Gems.

Sorry to have assumed you purchased from ArenaNet. Purchasing from Amazon, you would not have been eligible for a refund, anyway. No business gives refunds when you purchase a product elsewhere.

I bought the core game directly from Anet, and that’s what would have been refunded, but because I bought the expansion from Amazon they wouldn’t, which is silly as they’re an official reseller.

And I don’t have anywhere near enough gold sadly.

Then they may have misunderstood what you wanted a refund for, possibly. They might have thought you were wanting a refund for HoT and not the base game.

Make sure you reference the page about the refund of the core game when purchasing the new one. Say that you’re aware you’re out of the time period but were away during that time. Here’s the link: https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/94582027-Heart-of-Thorns-Pre-Purchase-FAQ/#Additional

And if they can’t refund the cost due to where you purchased HoT, then ask if they could do the alternative option they had for the refund for those who purchased the core game from a retailer: a free character slot.

As for them not being able to refund if not bought from them, that’s like buying an HP computer from an Office Depot then contact HP directly when you want to return it. HP’s going to say they can’t refund your money and to go to Office Depot.

Yeah I mean at the end of the day all I want is the character slot for my Revenant, I have asked if they can do that even though I missed the July deadline due to not playing when the announcement was made.

Raids and meters...

Data is very important when raiding at a serious level, back in the day I was in a top 20 world WoW guild and we’d use whatever tools provided us with insight into how each member was performing, something like http://www.worldoflogs.com/ was a great resource. A lot of my fun came from pushing my class to its limit, something I couldn’t have done if all that data was hidden. Plus I think it makes people improve whether they want to or not, and increasing the overall skill of the community isn’t a bad thing. The only people who would be against this type of data being shown are people not willing to learn how to play their class correctly, if you’re massively behind someone with the same gear, class and build you’re doing something wrong and should want to do better.

But this is serious raiding I’m talking about, most casual guilds or PUGs aren’t going to scrutinise you to such a degree so I really don’t see the harm. Maybe they could even an option to allow your data to be shown, like how Dota allows you to hide your profile. This way you can hide in the shadows if you want to, but if you’re interested in improving you can see how you stack up against others.

So dungeon rewards... why?

It seems all their PvE focus will be on fractals and raids, so they want you to be doing them more than anything which wouldn’t be the case if dungeons still gave the best rewards. Personally I’m looking forward to new content as I’ve always avoided fractals as they’re much longer than dungeons but that won’t be the case in the expansion. And TBH, the dungeons never felt that great anyway, certainly nothing like what WoW has.

Customer support wouldn’t help me as I bought the expansion from Amazon, even though they’re an official reseller which seems really unfair to me. So I guess my options are give them more money to be able to enjoy the content I bought the expansion for or delete a character.

+1. Seems odd to get a new class and no slot for it.

But before you are too critical of the Anet way of doing things, reflect upon the fact that they are much, much better than some of their competitors!

We didn’t have one slot per class at release either.

Yeah, but that’s a bit different imo.

Folks are buying an expansion that comes with one new class. Any long term player is likely to have max level toons in all their existing slots and will be desperate to try the new class. Sure, those players will probably have enough gold to buy a new slot with gems but I’m thinking back to the expansions for GW1 where you typically got 2 new classes and 2 or 4 slots, depending upon whether you added it to your existing account or opted to use it standalone.

That’s the situation I’m in. My slots are full but my account isn’t quite old enough to be considered “veteran” so I don’t get a slot by default for my Revenant. It just seems odd that they expect you to buy the expansion to play the new class, then expect you to fork over more cash for a class slot to play it.

Customer support got back to me and asked for all my details so hopefully I’ll get either the core game refunded or just a character slot as that’s all I really want anyway.

Veteran players are awarded the free character slot because new players are getting the core game for free. A character slot is only $10 whereas the game is $50. New players are already receiving more benefits than veteran players. Don’t be greedy, unless you want anet to make you buy the core game, which you are playing on for free now, for $50 just for the character slot (which can be bought with $10) that you so dearly want.

How am I being greedy? I get absolutely nothing for free. You should read the thread before commenting.

All I can say is, check with support they can see when you last loged in and if you havent been playing during the time limit for getting the refund, maybe you could get one anyway. ( since you were clearly eligable for it)

Yeah that’s what I’ve done, it can’t hurt.

Here are the qualifications:

Free character slot

If you registered your core Guild Wars 2 game before January 23, 2015 and register a pre-purchase serial code for Heart of Thorns any time before the expansion is released, you’ll receive a free character slot! Once you apply a pre-purchase serial code, you’ll be eligible for the slot regardless of where you bought the core game.

If the serial code you used to register the core game came from a retail vendor (rather than buy.guildwars2.com or in-game) and was applied to your account between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015, you’ll also be eligible for a free character slot if you apply a Heart of Thorns pre-purchase serial code before the expansion release.

All accounts that become eligible by July 9 will have their free character slot applied by July 10. Eligible accounts that are upgraded with a pre-purchase serial code after July 10 will receive their slots on a weekly basis after that.

If you have a new account, then you got 5 character slots.

Good luck.

Guess I’m S.O.L then, I bought the game from ANET directly on March 6th, so I missed it by a few months.

Then, you were eligible for the refund. Alas, that has expired now.

First I’m hearing of a refund, kitten .

Can buy a slot (or as many as you’d like) with gems

Yeah I know mate, but I’m pretty skint right now, I only have so much spare cash for my gaming hobby and a few big titles hit me at the same (Heart of Thorns, Uncharted Collection, Witcher III expansion etc). I just wondered if others thought the same as me or am I being unreasonable in thinking a free slot should be baseline for the expansion given they’ve added a class? I guess I’m just a bit bummed as I thought I was ready for the expansion and only just found out I wasn’t thanks to a Reddit comment.

No idea why but I thought everyone who pre-ordered got one, but it turns out it’s only for veteran’s and those who spend £80 on the expansion which I can’t do. Am I alone in thinking a character shot should come baseline for anyone who buys the expansion? Usually this is the case when an expansion adds a new class to play. It’s just a bit frustrating having to delete a character to make room for the Revenant

They have to balance encounters around Ascended gear, otherwise it would be too easy for those with the gear. That being said, “required” is a strong word, I have no doubt you’ll be able to do any boss with a mix of Exotic and Ascended gear if your group is good enough, being full Ascended may be more of a crutch for less skilled players.

And if Ascended gear is dropping from the early bosses it won’t take long for your group to gear up, you may just need to farm the early bosses for awhile before taking on the last one which isn’t abnormal.

I live in hope.

It is running slightly less badly than it was a week or so ago, though, so I guess that’s something.

BTW, are some of the people on this thread paid by ANet?

If not, they should be.

they dont work for anet. they just dont understand how optimization works and what it could do for them.

i guess they enjoy playing with 40 fps when they could play at double the frame rate.

The thing is, they’re used to 20 – 30fps, so they think that’s as good as it gets, and as anyone with a good rig will tell you, that’s laughable. They don’t seem to understand that many people invest in their hobby so they can maintain the holy grail of 60fps, and when a game doesn’t allow that we want to know why. I’ve been entertaining such people, but honestly I shouldn’t, they will never understand and all it will do is give me a headache trying to make them. They’re the same people who think it’s acceptable to pay £50 for a console game that can’t maintain a locked frame rate.

I liked the Hunter in WoW, and I want to try a bow class in GW2 but from what I’ve read Longbow is hated by everyone in dungeons and I don’t want to be “that guy”, so is shortbow viable?

Longbow is hated by people who have no idea what is it used for and that it’s the meta “boss opener” … As well as hated by people who die to it.

So you can probably guess what is happening.
Ranger is one of the meta Dungeon classes with the PvE Frost Spotter build.
But beware that Longbow is used for nothing but opening a fight. After that – melee is the answer for everything concerning both PvE and PvP.

If you are looking for a full Longbow build – the only option for you is small-scale WvW roaming. That’s the only competitive and effective environment you can use it in.

So in short I should skip the Ranger then. I already have an 80 Warrior and Elementalist, so I thought an “archer” would fit nicely.

I clock at 4.6ghz mainly. I can clock at 5ghz, but the temps for the voltage range is just to high for a program like GW2 IMHO.

on my i7 system, my max FPS is 145FPS in Queensdale like areas.

Cheers, I just wanted to make sure you weren’t one of those people who buy a K processor and leaves it at stock, considering how close our performance is, although the difference between even a 2500k and 4790k isn’t huge for gaming (0 – 10fps depending on the game). It seems the 2500k and 3570k will live on forever. I’ve had my 3570k @ 4.5GHz for awhile and I’m seeing 63c max on the highest core after playing for several hours, so I could squeeze 4.6GHz out of it, but GW2 is literally the only game I play that doesn’t maintain 60fps in every situation so I don’t feel it’s worth it.

CPU performance is tapering off in the silicon race. I would wager that we dont get MORE then 10% between Haswell and Skylake, and thats on multicore performance. I think we are at a peak for single core performance now. So a 2500K/2600K will still be good until they stop making silicon based CPUs.

When you consider the small bumps we’ve been getting for years now I’d say you’re right, it’s crazy to think a CPU from 2011 is still offering nearly the same performance as one from 2015, for gaming at least. I usually do a full rebuild every 4 years or so, hopefully by then we’ll have something more substantial. Although in GW2s case it doesn’t matter what hardware you through at it because of that pesky DX9 engine. I’m personally really excited for DX12 and Windows 10 in general, as someone who stuck with Windows 7 I’m looking forward to a change, and not just change for changes sake, it actually looks great.

You and me both, but for me win10 is a rebuild. My OS is soo custom its WEEKS of work to change the OS. Which is the main reason i did not go to 8 or 8.1. After I test 10 out on my laptop ill probably switch my desktop over as well.

But DX12 will only really improve for games that use it. GW2 being DX9, It wont see much benefit to the change, if any at all.

For sure, GW2 won’t see any improvement from DX12/Win10 sadly. But with the new Unreal engine in development the future of PC gaming is bright.

The game gets very choppy during world bosses and WvW, no matter how good your hardware is.

So you can speak for everyone elses experience? You’ve played on my PC, have you?
Sounds more like you’re having problems on your own PC and opt not play due to personal expectations.
I play group-heavy content, like Vinewraith, some world bosses, EotM zergs, and WvW and do not suffer the slideshow choppiness you say exists on everyones machine. Yes, the framerate does drop some in those types of situations (which is completly expected and understandable), but never does it go choppy, never is it a ‘slideshow’, never do I have trouble using skills or moving my characters, never is it rendered “unplayable”. Unplayable would be a game problem creating a situation where you cannot control or use your characters or you die or fail in a situation due to this. This simply does not happen to everyone just because it happens to you.
I can play 100% of the time with no loss of control or playability in those situations. Its quite a leap to assume that because you have choppy slowdown that everyone else does.
This is very reminiscent of the people who cry about lag and blame the MMO developer/servers, when no one else on the same map or server is experiencing it, though they assume that because they are, that everyone else must have the same problem. Its never a problem with anything else, their own network, their own system, or anything between them and the server.
You can spout off hardware specs until your blue in the face, but there’s any number of other things that could contribute to choppy slowdown even with the best hardware.

You could have saved yourself a lot of time by saying the generic “It’s your PC, not the game”, it would have had the same effect.

OP, the graphic side is very well optimized. In fact, I remember how terrible it ran during the beta events.

The cpu side can only be fixed by changing the renderer to something like dx 12 or vulkan.

I want to people to stop saying this game is badly optimized. It is pretty well optimized and I am not sure what else can they do other than changing the renderer and stuff

I’ve suggested it before, but they could offer more extensive video options. The MMO Rift allows you to set the total number of players you will see spell effects from, this literally doubles the frame rate during large scale content, if GW2 added this option it would be possible to maintain 60fps on even the most demanding world bosses, and adding a setting probably wouldn’t be that much work for them. It’s a band-aid fix, but a fix nonetheless.

MrH.2591

It completely depends on your perception really. Most People are very ‘OK’ with 30FPS across the board. where as some people can tell the difference between 30-60FPS quite easily.

This game has a huge limitation in the API/Coding that limits the actual FPS, no matter how good your system is. And thats bound to the max performance of any ONE of your CPU cores. The higher the single thread performance, the higher your FPS is going to be. No matter the circumstances.

But that being said, the more character players on the screen the lower your FPS is just going to be. So your best bet is to find out if 30, even sub30, FPS is going to work for you or not. Then go from there.

On my systems (My signature for their specs) I get 100+ FPS on max settings for general PVE. For WvW, World Bosses, and the like They both get 32FPS to 45 FPS during combat. For select Bosses like Savnir Shaman, Modniir (The elemental Hands especially) They both drop between 12-18 seconds until all the Minis are hidden (takes about 90seconds on average for me) then they both get 24-28 FPS.

And the i7-4790K is the fastest single threaded CPU on the market. So that’s the best you can expect with what is out there right now.

What are you clocked at? I’m running an i5 3570k @ 4.5GHz and get a similar experience to you. I’d kill for 60fps without dips during world bosses, but apparently it’s not possible regardless of hardware.

Good FPS rate?

Although GW2 runs perfect fine with 30

Because that’s what you’re used to, for me I’m used to 60fps locked in every game I play, so when Gw2 drops to 25-30fps during world bosses it becomes extremely choppy and distracting.

So when you guys going to optimise GW2?

“Playable” is the bare minimum requirement for a game, the same way edible is for food, but I prefer food that’s edible and tasty.

"collision sensitivity" is related to Fps?

It says so right on the tooltip.

15-20fps isn’t playable to anyone who’s used to better, …

No, it is playable, you just choose not to.

Not in my opinion it’s not, unless …

Not in my opinion

opinion

Yes … so again, you CHOOSE to not play because of your standards. The game is playable.

Keep arguing semantics
