A Build to Burn Over

in Guardian

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

A few days ago, I saw a video here on the forums of a Guardian solo-ing Lupicus with a Scepter in record time. It inspired me, as my build that I currently use is somewhat similar, but it showed me that what I am currently running is a little sub-par compared to what it COULD be. So I bring to my fellow Guardians two variants of a build I feel fleshes out my already existing one, and hope that you all may have some input on how I can put the finishing touches on it.

The goal is almost 100% uptime for Burning. I will not be using it for the condition damage though, but for the passive damage bonus I will receive from my perks. The burning damage is just the icing on the cake.

Here is the first build. It’s my versatile, all around PvE build that I run with:

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNArdRlsApXo97wQI8DRR8QlVKa9H8CbQlBwEg1TA-TlSBwAFVGxd/hEm/ioE8m6Po0GgXHwiTBwRlOAeCABAQAuZAASBMqwI-w

The second build is for when Scepter just doesn’t cut it, or when I need to dish out some serious pain while being up-close and personal. With being able to re-trait on the fly, I have been switching between the two every now and again.

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNAsdSlsApZo1CxYI8DRR8Ql5Y0iW/BtwGUVAg1JC-TlSBwAFVGxd/hEm/ioE8m6Po0HI5UAcUpziHAAgjAApAGVYE-w

So with those two that I am flipping between, any suggestions on how I can round them out a bit? The second one especially feels like it’s missing something to me, but I can’t quite figure out what…

I can’t help but agree with this. I love this game, and I happen to have found a guild of good-hearted, positive players. But the forums are tough to handle some days.

As you said, patience is really the key here. No patch is perfect the moment it is implemented. There are things that they just very simply won’t find. This is even the case in big name console release titles (lolz @ Skyrim’s shopkeepers. If you played the game at release, you know what I mean. This being an example.). It just takes time for the dev team to find a way to patch it, then make the fix live. This is the case with megaservers. There is a lot that needs to be worked out. And it will happen. It is the job of the players to provide input and feedback. That’s what the forums are for. But as the OP said, it has crossed the line into criticism and angry whining.

Just as we level up a character hoping for it to be an unregulated death machine, so too does the game need to be approached the same way. It started out, it grew. And it’s growing again. There WILL be growing pains, but it is not necessary to flame and rage at the first sign of trouble.

Getting off my soapbox now… gosh OP, I’ve had that on my mind for a while as well. Nice to see someone decide to address it.

PvE: Is scepter bad?

in Guardian

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

Necroing that thread…

So the world record for a guardian soloing Lupicus is at 4:24 and it was done with a (SURPRISE) Scepter

That answers the question about the viablity of a PvE scepter imho.

Wow, what build is this guy running? This video was INCREDIBLE. And I love the scepter, it’s one of my favorite weapons to use, if not always the most plausible, I’d love to make something like this workable!

Anyone able to shine some light on what this build might look like?

Fresh Air after the Patch?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

Hmm, perhaps I didnt quite word that clearly enough. What I was asking was this:

Fresh Air relies on crits. A lot of the damage from a Sc/Dagger FA build comes from the high damage crits. What I was asking is if Fresh Air is less effective because of the Ferocity change. I mean, I have noticed that the damage is LESS, but is it something other eles who run a build similar to mine are finding to be an issue.

And no, not high (rude, rude indeed). Thanks for asking. Just didn’t phrase my post clearly enough, it seems.

Fresh Air after the Patch?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

So I dusted off my ele and gave it a go post-patch to test how the Ferocity changes had effected my Fresh Air build. I know I saw a damage reduction, but I am currently unsure if it has made it less viable than it used to be…

What are the opinions of other Fresh Air eles? I have been considering coming back to my ele for some time, but I’m not sure if I can justify it to myself if my favorite weapon combo (Scepter/Dagger) has been nerfed into the ground. (I run Staff on occasion, but Scepter/Dagger is just so much FUN! Big numbers, many crit…)

T6 Mats and How not to buy them all?

in Crafting

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

I don’t know why players like OP insist on getting everything by farming themselves. By far the best way is to play for fun, then buy the boring, grindy materials off the TP from the bots.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I do lots of other things (maybe too much WvW…), but at this point in my Legendary Hunt, I’m ready to give it a concentrated effort to finish it. It’s been about 4-5 months, and I’m ready to finally end it, given that I am ONLY short the T6 mats. I would try to play the TP a bit to get stuff, but I was NOT blessed with a good eye for anything dealing with money.

I will say this, your sig shows that you are not new at all to the Legendary Hunt, and I appreciate the input you have given!

I spent a little time in Southsun earlier, and I found a few things. I just need to find the a good spot. Water farming is a smart idea. Took my engineer, traited him for grenades, and went to town. It was a good start.

Thanks again for everyone’s input, it’s been valuable indeed!

I have done my clovers. The last things I need are the gifts requiring the T6 mats.

T6 Mats and How not to buy them all?

in Crafting

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

So in my quest for Meteorlogicus, I have faced a lot of challenges. The cost of the pre (thankfully got another, more expensive pre, sold it, and bought Storm), running CoE (not so bad, really, just monotonous), and now, on my final stretch, it is the T6 mats I am stuck on. My highest stack is like 155 Ancient Bones. My Lowest is sitting around 87 Armored Scales.

I’ve used Laurels, I’ve used item promotion, I’ve been lucky enough to find some, but at this rate, this step will be slower than all others.

To alleviate this, I have come here, asking two things:

1) Where would be the ideal (try to be specific) place to farm these?

2) Are there any groups on any servers that farm this for a dedicated amount of time? I would love to join if possible!

If you have any other tips and tricks you may be able to share, I’d appreciate it. Thanks for reading!

Making Torment Build for After Patch?! (WvW)

in Mesmer

Nabarue.3290

Whew, so much new info to take in! I think I’ve been using the fall damage trait as kind of a crutch. It’s something I’ve just come to know in my current build, but I agree with you that the points I put in there for that may just be wasted. So I’m retooling the build a bit, adding in DE (in my opening post, I voiced this as a concern, especially since I wasn;t sure if scepter would be enough.), and dropping the extra 10 points in Inspiration and funneling it all into getting DE. As well as adding iDisenchanter. I may swap this out with Arcane Thievery (I also currently run this, and have come to love it), but I feel the Regen proc on IDisenchanter and the boon/condi strip may have some merit!

Also Retalitory Shield seems pretty good. Especially since one of the key skills on my scepter works off of this.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Updating original post yet again with this:

Making Torment Build for After Patch?! (WvW)

in Mesmer

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

So in preparation for the patch coming up in a few days, I have been theory-crafting a build revolving around the new trait “Maim the Disillusioned.”

The focus of this build is applying as much torment as possible, while also focusing on Confusion to down your foe. With the combination of Scepter/Torch and Staff, I have been attempting to make a build that is plausible.

The problem is this, I am having a hard time justifying a shatter-heavy build without running Deceptive Evasion. It seems like I’d be handicapping myself if I did not take this trait. The build is below for you guys to review. (The trait I left open in the Illusions line is where Maim the Disillusioned would go). The Torment comes from the runes, and the Scepter block skill, which I have plenty of practice with, so timing isn’t an issue. It is supplemented by Malicious Sorcery (is this as good as it looks?).

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vgQQNArfWlknpRtlpxQNcrNicSB0JdoecdgHAUShtdhA-zECBoOCi0CgUHBKTqIas11FRjV3ATxiIq2joIa1kCAi1AA-w

Dire armor seemed the way to go. I had a few thoughts on this, and I wanted to see what you guys thought…

1) Would the autoattack from the Scepter make up for the lack of DE?

2) I’m short condition removal save for Mender’s Purity. I normally run the trait the uses the Torch to cleanse condis + the occasional condi-cleanse mantra, but is Mender’s Purity strong enough to handle the job? I have never used it before, so I don’t know much about it.

3) This build is devoid of PU, while I like that on principle, does this even seem practical?

Sound off and let me know, I know the patch isn’t here yet, but I always like to be prepared! Thanks for reading!

You don’t even need these foods in www. Conditions doesn’t tic more than couple sec anyways.

I could not disagree more with this. My engineer’s 18 second bleeds and 15 seconds of Vulnerability (without food, I only stack roughly 12-15 of these, add food, and I can grab that potential full 25 stacks) have something to say about this statement.

Nerfing Warrior regen...why Anet!? WHY!?

in Warrior

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

I don’t think warriors need to learn to play. I think there are many, many good warriors out there. But what I see from these responses is that the warriors that support this change or don’t care, are those that seem to have played other classes and understand why nerfing warriors to some extent is necessary. Warriors can very simply do things in an easier fashion than other classes are able to. And most of the time, in a FASTER fashion. Defend it all you like, an imbalance is an imbalance.

Invisible Enemy Commander Buff - Why?

in WvW

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

This change doesn’t make much sense to me. Shouldn’t you be able to single out the enemy commander and down him/her to create disarray among a group? This is a tactic that has been used since the dawn of war. You wear the brass, you attract attention. The danger is a part of the job. As someone who has a commander tag (although not used too terribly often) I always knew the risks of tagging up and taking command. I could be a target.

I’m not saying this because I protest the change. I could even stand to benefit from it. But it just never made much sense overall. shrug

I play my ranger casually from time to time, but have noticed I’ve been giving him more time than usual, and I think it’s time to get a little serious about it.

Let me start off: I love Sword/Torch. It’s fun, its fluid, and the sword is just great. So with that parameter set, I would like to try making a build for him around that.

I will WvW with him, and I mainly roam. I would LIKE to try the condi route, but if it doesn’t work, that is ok. What do you guys think, I was hoping the collective ranger community could help me round out this problem.

a pve issue with the engi

Nabarue.3290

I have never had a single complaint from anyone in all of my time with dungeons/fractals etc. Most of the time, even in the case of fractals, the group will know what needs to be done, and understand the limitations imposed on them by the group’s composition. The one thing I have heard more than anything, among all the groups I have run with, is that their impression of a (well played) engi is one of realizing that the class can do anything. I am a four kit engineer, and I bring combo fields, finishers, conditions, support, and decent damage to the table. I can switch from single target ranged attacks, to AOE, to melee with the press of a button. We’re versatile, maneuverable, and (in the case of most engi’s), resourceful. If a team rejects you based on your class, they obviously aren’t worth running with anyway. People tend to take this to heart (especially rangers), but if a group doesn’t want you because you are of a certain class, that isn’t on you, it’s them being short-sighted.

I am fairly new to Elementalist as well, but this hasn’t been letting me down. In PvE sub out Lightning Flash for Lightning Hammer. Lightning Hammer is just the best when it comes to leveling an Ele. Coupled with FGS and a little skillful dodging, you can live even in the longest of PvE fights and still dish out some amazing damage.

Darkhaven NN Camp Defense

Nabarue.3290

I rarely feel the need to make posts like this, but tonight has given me reason. I need to pass along a message to the Darkhaven Borderlands night crew.

Thank You.

Tonight me (an asuran engineer), and my mesmer friend (a Charr), fought for 30 minutes against members of NOVA for the NN Camp in Darkhaven BL. It started with us taking on a sole Guardian, and escalated into us fighting 2-4 (6 at the pinnacle of the fight) members at a time. We used the camp and the NPC’s as cover to help the fact that our numbers were few, and we fought wave after wave. I haven’t had that much fun in WvW in months. Not even kidding.

In a format that can quickly become repetitive, and for us late night players, a labor of love, tonight brought me a battle that was more fun than any in recent memory.

While we eventually fell to superior numbers, it was a good time that I rarely get the chance to experience given the time I get to play. It was a death I was more than happy to have met by the time the battle came to an end.

So to you NOVA members, whoever you are, Thanks. Hope to meet you in the field of battle again one day! It’s times like this that keep me playing.

When Does Elementalist Become Good?

in Elementalist

Nabarue.3290

I am also leveling an Elementalist right now. I love it.

I share your difficulties, but have come to realize two things.

1) Preparation is everything. Going into battle you need to prepare your surroundings and any tools you may use. (If I know I will be fighting more than one mob, I summon a lightning hammer beforehand, pop my spells on the first one or two mobs, then pick up the hammer and finish the rest, its effective and still allows me to play the full range of abilities at my disposal.) As an ele, we need to take into account all things from our surroundings to our spells, to any “what-if” variables.

2) SPELL ROTATION. This was the hardest part for me to learn. Learn when to cast, and at what time, and what to follow it up with. I came from playing an engineer for more than a year, and the one thing both of these classes teach you is to know when to use the right tool (or spell) to do the job.

Hope my input helps, and best of luck with leveling! I hope our collective knowledge assists you in your endeavor!

awesome videos guys, ty! FGS will certainly fill my elite slot. After some time spent working on a build, I have crafted one I am going to give a go. I will be swapping between S/F for PvE and S/D for WvW (Fire Grab and Ride the Lightning are incredible, and I think the Ele class needs to work quickly on a target or it won’t work as well, and those two help expedite the death dealing process).

How’s this look? I am trying to take into account adding Vitality for survivability (I am not bothering with Toughness as much, the current WvW meta seems to be conditions, and conditions ignore Toughness, so I found Vitality to be the more useful stat atm), and adding Precision and Crit Damage (YES, I know Ferocity stat change is coming, and may change the build accordingly :p ) to supplement my Fresh Air build.

Such informative responses, TY so much!

I absolutely see the similarities between Engi and Ele. I love the fast paced, kit swapping, “tool for every job” feel of my Engi, and I can tell that a lot of what I love is here in Elementalist. The attunements are like kits of their own, and I enjoy having 20 spells at my disposal before I even get to my slot skills!

I will try the Focus. It’s one weapon I have yet to really dig into, and from the skills, it looks like it might cover a lot of the bases that dagger doesn’t. I will still keep a dagger on me for sure though. Scepter is my weapon. From the time I spent playing, I know that much. It’s like the first time I tried the bomb kit on my engi, I loved it, and knew it just worked for me. The offhand weapon is what was really getting me. Thanks for the input from all of you on that one!

As I am not yet 80, I am still contemplating a build. Fresh Air looks fantastic. I will probably put 10 into arcana solely for either Vigorous Scepter or the Vigor-on-crit trait. (need to test which one meshes with me better) As an engi, dodging and Vigor are like bread and butter, as we are one of the prime thief/warrior targets, so I am no stranger to the “it’s XXX class, lets try killing them first.” Beyond that, I know the 30 for Fresh Air, and a few in Water (maybe the rest). I’ll work it out and take everything you all said into consideration.

Lightning Blaze, I’m glad to see others that have a similar mindset as me. I like to be the wild card, the one they don’t see coming. The non-meta build, if you will. Crazy works more than it doesn’t for me xD

Questions from a Long-time Engineer!

Nabarue.3290

I am coming to Elementalist after being a long-time Engineer. I love the feel of the class, and I am having a pretty easy time getting a handle on attunements thanks to running a multi-kit engineer.

But I have a few questions regarding this class. I read on the forums that this class is weak and not in a good place, and I aim to make myself and my build into a passable, and maybe even decent Elementalist.

1) If I choose not to run a staff in WvW, will this be something that will hurt me. Every friend I have that is an Ele runs staff. They say it works, but I do not wish to be like every other Ele. I am currently using S/D as I level, and I love the feel of it. D/D isn’t bad, but I like keeping my distance when I want to. Would S/D be viable in say, dungeons and WvW? I found the Fresh Air builds, and have often found myself wondering how they;d work in areas outside WvW/PvP (I know to keep all of my weapons in my inventory, so I will always carry a staff, but I do not want to feel railroaded into using it).

2) I like conjures. Frost Bow and FGS are awesome. Are these plausible in WvW/Dungeons?

3) Will it hurt me not to put trait points into the Arcane Power tree? I know it provides bonuses to all of your attunements etc, but as I said, I dont wanna be a copy/paste ele. X/X/X/30/30 isn’t what I am looking for. What are the community of ele’s thoughts on this?

I can’t wait to dig into this class more, as coming off of Engineer, it’s a literal breath of fresh air (no pun intended). Thanks for reading!

Dungeon Build Needed!

in Guardian

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

So I decided to try and start running dungeons with my guardian. I am currently running an AH build (I WvW a lot), but I am almost sure that won’t be the best thing for this.

Any suggestions from experienced Dungeoneers? I will mainly be doing AC, CoF, and CoE. So given this information, what do you all think would be best?

Thanks for any info you may be able to give me!

PvD kills WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

In war, when your enemy develops new tactics, you need to adapt and come up with new ways to fight them. PvD will always be a thing to some extent. It’s just the way it is. While using siege is much more effective, a mindless zombie mass is a pretty tough thing to argue with. So instead of coming on the forums and shrugging in discontent and frustration, why not just come up with a few ways to get around this problem? Instead of making a thread about OMFG ANET FIX THIS OR I WILL QUIT, why not come to your fellow WvW-ers and ask us what the heck you can do to stop your problem from happening?

I come from a server that has sat at the bottom for a long time. We get night-capped constantly, and we are outnumbered more than we aren’t. So when the enemy has more than us, when they seem unstoppable, we have to approach it differently.

You mentioned something that really struck me as interesting. They didn’t take your camps. This is pivotal. They didn’t take your camps! All that supply is yours! They don’t want it, so use it against them. You will inevitably have some idea where they are headed, so set up siege ahead of time. Not in the keeps/towers (I mean, still do this, but thats normal, I’m talking about something even more underhanded). Get creative. Find a choke point and cut it off. Ballista, arrow carts. It won’t take many players to stop them with this approach, and while you may be killed eventually, you WILL make them pay. You WILL make them stop and think. They are making a grave tactical error by not taking your camps. Exploit it.

Also, Harass their zerg. Constantly. If you die while doing so, WP back and do it again. A small group can pick off stragglers and cause general chaos with minimal effort. I’m not saying it won’t be dangerous. It will be. Extremely so. But who’s gonna live forever? If they are mindlessly zerging, it means they are lazy. They feel safe. They feel like their numbers will protect them. Exploit that mistake. Pick off a few that fall behind, ambush them at places around the map that make sense (my above point falls into this category.)

I don’t disagree with what your posts say, but I do disagree with asking someone else to fix it. That fix MAY come one day, but until then, you have two choices.

1) Stop playing. This option sucks. Don’t do this one.

2) Make them pay. Make the cost of them being in your BL more than they are willing to pay. It will be a bloody process, but you may start to see a change.

Either way, good luck and have fun with it!

Firstly, that video was awesome! Thanks for sharing it!

Secondly, I have come up with a build that I think best suits what I am looking for given your feedback and suggestions.

I know the Hammer is good, and I will be keeping one on me for when the need arises, but as I stated, I am working on getting Sunrise (beautiful weapon), so GS is a must. How’s this look so far?

Great advice, thank you! The Healway looks ok, but maybe it’s not quite what I thought I was looking for! I am looking into both of those build styles you mentioned now. AH Shouts looks great, and Medi burst seems fun! Now to decide which to run with…

I love the AH build, but I really don’t care for the hammer (that and I would like to attain Sunrise at some point, so a GS is a must for me). I had never considered the Staff at all, either. I’ll try it out today when I play! GS/Staff or maybe Hammer/GS? Would that work?

Thanks again for the help!

I recently returned to Guild Wars after almost a year off from playing. While was primarily an Engineer, I thought it time to expand my horizons. In my roster of characters, I had a Guardian who I had capped at 80, and just never played from there. I’d like to try him once again, but I am a bit lost on what to do.

So I went forum hunting, and came upon a build that I liked. I’m not sure who made it, and I’m not sure if it’s even still viable, but I thought I’d give it to you guys and see if it could be made to work/improved. It will primarily be used in WvW.

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQNAR8dlUgqCnFyvDfIFSmiVCBrKEPYPwoMqjuKoQA-jkCBoNCyEEQ0HBOLqIasVWFRjVNbQ1KbYqXIWzDa1eOxSBIoyI-w

I like the look of this, but I have a few questions:

1) Is it still viable? I love the look of it, but just because a build looks good on paper, I know it may not always be good in practice.

2) Is there a way to change sword to scepter? I love having some range if I need it, but it is not a requirement if there is something about the sword I haven’t thought of.

3) The gear seems a bit too weighted Clerics, is this a healthy thing for this build, or should I move some of that to Soldiers?

Thanks for any help you all may be able to provide!

Commander tags - One size does not fit all

in WvW

Posted by: Nabarue.3290

Nabarue.3290

I agree with a lot of what is being said, but I feel we are missing two points here.

1) Many people, including myself, came back after taking some extended time off. I had been a full time WvW player, and came back and got right back to it. With the gold I had saved up from my last time playing, I got a Tag. I am not the best, but I am certainly not the worst. But I know the basics, and if I had a tag that was a different color, despite my large amount of experience from my time playing before, people would choose not to follow if my tag was “different.”

2) The end of my last point led me to this one. If a Commander is new and just learning the ropes of command, why should he/he be made to be treated differently? To some people, 100 gold is a lot, and saving up for it and achieving it is a feat. They should be treated the same as any other commander, and if they have something to learn, then they can learn it from experience. Even if it results in death. Death is an experience and a part of the game just as much as living and taking stuff.

Could changes be made? Yes. I like the color idea for different modes of gaming. Ranks for Commanders? Nope. They got the tag, hard work or not. They will learn to lead or they will gain a negative reputation and that by itself will solve your problem.

picking a class

I have to second (or third?) the Engineer. I love the class. Explosions, a huge bag of tricks, and perma-swiftness? And have I mentioned how inherently awesome Rocket Boots are? But don’t play it for the gimmicks, it’s actually an amazing all around class that excels at PvE and WvW. I tried Ele and I have a level 80 Guardian as well, but Engi is the best balance I could find between damage, survivability, and fun.

I also couldn’t end this without also seconding Mesmer. I duo with a Mesmer often (my fiance is an amazing player) and together we have NO problem capping camps in WvW and harassing our enemies. I often am amazed at just how evasive that class can be.

[ASH] Ashguard, is recruiting on DR!

Nabarue.3290

Ashguard is currently recruiting new, old, any kind of class and player on Devona’s Rest.

We are an old guild, with roots in many MMO’s. We have never been a guild to pride itself on numbers, but instead the strength and resolve of the members who choose to join. The only thing we ask of our members is a can-do attitude and a willingness to improve not only yourself, but others around you. We believe that no problem, no matter how large, can be overcome. As it’s leader, I do not believe in a no-win scenario.

We do not require 100% rep time. We are a guild that is just getting started again, and as such, we understand that many players have taken root in other parts of the community, and we strive to respect that in all it’s forms.

We specialize in WvW, but we also do dungeons, and are open to anything our members need a hand with. We encourage growth and the pursuit of knowledge, while still maintaining a fun, casual atmosphere. Which means new things, whether it be new dungeons, maps, content, or otherwise, is something we will pursue together.

If this sounds like something you would enjoy, hit me up in game, or here on the forums. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about us.

Thanks!

I too took an extended period of time off from the game only to come back (only a week ago) and see our fair Devona in a sad state of affairs. Well, not completely sad anyway. I feel like the groups who run WvW now are a lot more closely knit than when I left. I never struggle to find a good fighter to run with, and they are always helpful and informative. It’s why I love our server. But no matter our tricks, tactics, and innovative strategies, there are moments when the sheer number of our enemies just becomes too much. This is why I hope threads like this reach someone, that if even one more person decides to join the fight in WvW, we will be that much stronger. (Especially if they play over the non-primetime hours, that would be amazing :P )

If there is anything I can do to help, Chappy, hit me up. I would gladly run with you guys.

So with some testing, I found out that somehow, adding the toughness trait actually brings my damage DOWN a bit. How that works is beyond me, as you’d think it would actually be cumulative with the healing trait. So I replaced it with Protective Shield and will test how that feels with the build.

As for the armor, I’m not sure how I want to go with that.

Keep the suggestions comin!

I’ve been out of the game for a while, probably the better part of this year. But for the six months I played after launch, I played a grenade slinging, static discharging Engi from the planet EXPLOSIONS. That was fun. But I’m looking to expand upon what my engi can do. That being said:

I almost exclusively do WvW, and I’m not much of a roamer. I travel with a large-ish group most of the time, and enjoy adding what I can to the fight. But I’d like to try something a bit more support-ish, to help improve the survivability of my friends and comrades, while still keeping damage up. To this end, I have created the Combat Medi Engi. It’s not perfect, and it’s not done, but it’s a work in progress and the early test show promise. Enough to make me want to come to the forums and crowdsource our immense creativity that brings players like us to the Engineer class.

In making this build, I was looking for balance. Damage, survivability, mobility, and the ability to help keep my comrades alive. It had to all be there. Take a look. Critique away!

Dear Guild Wars 2 (A Letter of Thanks)

Dear Guild Wars 2,

I owe you. I owe you big. I have a short story to share, and I hope you take a few minutes and allow me to tell it, as I promise you, it is a story I will remember for the rest of my life…

I wasn’t going to buy you. But constant pressure from my closest friends lead me to the local game store. I purchased it with hope that it wasn’t a wasted effort, that this game wouldn’t end up on the pile of games that I would start, but inevitably never finish. Silly me.

I QUICKLY became enthralled with a fantasy land with so much to offer. I created a snarky Asura Engineer, and with a backpack of grenades and a realm to save, I was off on an adventure.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, things weren’t going so well for me. I was 28, and my life was… well, it was bad. I won’t go into details, but things were looking awfully grim for me. I was surrounded by a lot of darkness in my life, and while everyone experiences these from time to time, it was one of those low points that you know you will be looking back at in a few years, and wonder how you ever got out of it (and how you got INTO it in the first place). I wish I could convey the magnitude of the low point my life had reached, but I will leave that tale for another day…

So day by day, my trusty Sir Sprocket soldiered on. Before long I joined the ranks of the Priory, had joined a guild with many active members, and protected our server from invaders with all the gusto my little Asuran character could muster. I was living a life that I only hoped I could. Where I could give my all in the service of all things right and good. Where I could protect myself and the things I cared about with my own two hands (paws? what do we asurans call those? lol). I was living the life I only hoped I could live in the real world.

I was using you as a ways to escape my real life problems, but that’s where things get interesting…

Ser Sprocket met a Sylvari. It was innocent at first. I only wanted to help, to provide the kind of assistance to someone that I never thought I had the bravery to in the real world. My real self was beaten, broken, and reeling from blow after blow the real world had dealt me. But Sprocket; he was strong, mighty (no short jokes!), capable of protecting things he cared about with a satchel of grenades and a strong resolve. So this “Ms. Sylvari” and I started taking on the rigors of Tyria together. She was a gentle sort, our conversation was easy, flowing, and soothing. We developed a friendship that, despite the distance and the digital shroud that covered our true selves, became something very real.

In my real world, things had become worse by this point. I felt like I was fighting a tide that was threatening to sweep me out to sea, where the good parts of life would only be a distant shore that I would never reach.

Tyria was home to me at this point. Ms. Sylvari and I were growing ever closer. We talked about how these internet relationships work from time to time, how we felt about each other, and realized that despite the fact that it was just a game, we are real people, with real feelings, and how we had come to see each other was also very real. I had found a place where I could live the life I had only dreamed of, and be appreciated by someone at the same time. Playing games was a familiar feeling, feeling like I actually mattered, that was something totally alien. And that’s where she brought me to a realization that was so blatantly obvious to me, yet I had failed to realize:

Sir Sprocket and I were the same person.

The bravery I channeled into Sprocket, the goodness, the steel willpower that I fed into that character, was a reflection of my true self. It was the me I never grasped in the real world. The problems I was facing in the real world, no matter how large they seemed, needed to be met with the same resolve I used to take down the largest opponents in Tyria. Ms. Sylvari was instrumental in this. Call me sentimental, call it cliche, but love is an insanely powerful thing. You can find it when you least expect it, and in the strangest of forms. Remember this, fellow players, that the people who you see day by day in-game are real people, and have real feelings, and you never know just how they might change your life.

GW2, thank you. Thanks to you, I came back from the brink. You brought together two people, who lived 1000 miles apart, and gave us the opportunity to find happiness with each other. I moved a few months ago. Dealt with those bad situations, and made a journey of my own. 1000 mile journey, to be exact. And now I write this as Ms. Sylvari sits in the very next room. And let me tell you, I have never, in all of my 28 years, been happier than I am now.

You helped me find my heart, and a person to share it with. And for that you have my everlasting thanks.

Your game will be one I remember until my dying day.

Thankful and Happy,

Sir Sprocket

Get over yourselves you are winning because you outnumber us 5 to 1 period. All the transfers to the top of the bottom 3 servers (DR) congrats on screwing up a decent 3vs3 thing we had going on.

You’re mad at us because… we are winning? You started out upset about all the trash talk thats been going on (I am too, I stay away from the main threads now… and I AM a DR resident), and yet, in the last part of what I quoted, you’re mad because we finally have more people? Did you expect us to be satisfied with staying where we were? Do you REALLY want to see us every week? Don’t get me wrong, fighting Kaineng is fun and crazy, but I’ve seen you guys EVERY week, EVERY match. Aren’t you ready for that change? I know I am…

And if memory serves, I remember Kaineng openly, ACTIVELY seeking for guilds to come to their server to help sway the fight. We DR’s did nothing of the sort, and yet you condemn us for finding the same fortune? I’m confused, OP, just so confused.

If you ask me, I think you’re just being bitter. And it makes it hard to take anything you write seriously. (not trying to troll, but I wasn’t sure if you were angry about the trash talk [which I dilike also] or if you were upset that the numbers have swayed in our favor…)
