It should be super annoying and tedious to get. So annoying and tedious that I don’t buy the game in the first place.
“You end up leaving because most MMO’s make you grind. Well that’s because that’s how MMO’s work. "
I don’t really see the irony. I like FPSers, yet that doesn’t mean I like all of them. I’ve played a lot of MMOs, I liked some of them (GW1, on again off again with STO, I played a few others for quite a while that I forgot over time). I just have a very keen edge to a grind fest now, seeing as I left GW2 within 2 days of the game announcing one after playing GW1 for 7 years and am now looking for a new fun MMO to play.
Again, I will put it to you – I like the idea behind most MMOs I just think they fail at their execution. Your square hole/round pegging me again. I like fighting games, yet I don’t play them excedingly frequently because I do really feel like playing mortal kombat again or street fighter, I did that enough when I was young. Still like stuff like little fighter 2. Obviously, must mean I hate fighting games. Haven’t played an FPS in a few months since blacklight went P2W, obvliously, must hate FPSs.
GW1 was not an MMO, it was a co op RPG, with some multiplayer tacked on.
GW2 is an MMO.
My point is, I fail to see why ppl get upset about a game being what it is supposed to be, an MMO. You obviously said it yourself, you like the “idea” of MMO’s, but to me it seems like you are more into RPG’s.
Yeah, he should really stick to not playing MMOs. I mean they are all really the same anyways right? Just get some sweet RPG’s and call it a day.
It’s just the autism speaking, ignore them and enjoy the game.
What a kind thing to say!
There is always going to be players who just don’t get MMO’s and want everything handed to them with no time put in, they are looking for a “fair” arcade beat em up, in the wrong place.
This is so true. Man, am I ever a moron for buying an MMO sold on the premise of horizontal progression when all I really wanted was Street Fighter. What an astute observation! Bravo!
That is what you want, you just don’t realize it. League of Legends maybe? Point is, make everyone even and fair, and you have an arcade game, not an in depth long term MMO, with growth.
You’re so smart where can I sign up to your blog or podcasts so you can tell me more about myself.

Legendaries requirements are funny, people want carrots so Anet painted one on the moon!
Haha, I seriously laughed imagining a carrot being painted on the moon…
So one game that is a success vs several that are failures and you want me to think this game will be as resilient as WoW? Really?
Those games all had subscriptions and were fundamentally broken or incomplete at launch. Most people are not ok with paying $15 a month for something that doesn’t work or isn’t done. And they will still perform poorly after they have gone F2P because they were designed around a sub model and have horrendous time sinks and grind.
GW2 has no sub fee, the campaign was complete at launch from start to finish (looking at you AoC), WvW was up, running and worked (Illum says hi)…I could go on, but you get the point.
Not to say launch did not have its problems and bugs. Stuck skill points or hearts that prevented map completions were particularly frustrating. But, comparing those games to this one is pointless. They are different animals.
Btw, Guild Wars was a resilient as WoW. Self-sustaining, profitable, and supported fully for over half a decade. It also didn’t have a monthly fee. That’s a factor you can’t really downplay.
You need to stop holding on to the idea that non-subscription with gems is an automatic winning formula. Even if people continue to play, but boycott the gem store (which some have already posted they would do), that is not a win due to bandwidth and maintenance.
We really have no idea what the fallout will be from this patch yet after less than a week. Up until this point I would say it has been resilient, but so were many games for the first 3 months believe it or not.
I’ve heard this one before and many others like it before…
SWG NGE
AoC release
Warhammer release
SWTOR beta + release^ all games that are dead or on life support
Go ahead and try to marginalize the voices on your forum. Go ahead and even ignore them. It doesn’t change anything. This game is headed for the same fate as the ones above if they don’t clean up their act very quickly.
Every, Every MMO forums are heavily biased towards the negative. If you go by the forums for WoW, that game should have died by the end of 2004, and again in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008. 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.
So one game that is a success vs several that are failures and you want me to think this game will be as resilient as WoW? Really?
Those games all had a subscription as well. This one doesn’t.
Warhammer was fundamentally broken to begin with, and had insane balance issues between classes that never got fixed.
AoC was a trainwreck… DX10 STILL bogs down high end PC’s
SWTOR was bug ridden and almost unplayable a lot of the time.
SWG…. I never played it but I tried the free trial and quit within 2 minutes of playtime. I don’t see how anyone could even call that a game let alone one of the best MMO’s. Sorry if I offended anyone with that but its true.
GW2 has some annoying bugs but runs very smoothly almost all the time, is beautiful, has amazing World PvP and as they are proving, some of the most interesting and well done PvE ever made as well.
Honestly I think some people are just bitter and will trash any game that comes out because they get a sick sense of enjoyment out of it.
If I’m not playing this game I’m not buying gems, their source of income for this game. Subscription or not is meaningless. If I’m not here, I’m not buying. They can’t support development and bandwidth without anyone buying gems.
Honestly, I’m not here to trash the game but get them to fix what wasn’t originally broken before this patch. This isn’t out of anger or sick enjoyment or whatever other labels you want to use, it is out of necessity to try to save this game before it sinks. Get that through your head!
I’ve heard this one before and many others like it before…

Lol negative publicity. It’s only this forum that can’t handle an optional gear addition and new dungeon. Seriously get over it dude
Huh? I’ve already seen articles on MMO websites about the problem described and in other gaming forums more active than this one. Just because you haven’t been to Argentina it doesn’t mean the people there don’t exist.
The game is naturally progressing to appeal to all spectrum of gaming. Everyone can have their slice of pie. There is no one stopping you if you want to play around with cosmetic items. Or if you want to progress your characters to become better and more skillful. Tolerance toward different spectrum of gaming is a good thing.
Although your goal is noble, it just isn’t practical and I have yet to see it work out in an MMO since you can’t please everyone. At some point you end up alienating different playstyles if you try to do so, much like this current patch has already done.
I did get exactly what I wanted. I took the time to educate myself about ArenaNet, their design philosophies, and their goals with Guild Wars 2. I have seen nothing contrary to what they promised me, and I have received everything I asked for in my purchase.
Being cynical and attacking me because I am grateful to ArenaNet for providing continued support for a game that I enjoy is a bit childish. You don’t agree? That’s fine. There’s a hundred other threads for you to go and rant about how unhappy you are about the changes and your experiences. Don’t come in mine and start lashing out here too.
Oh my goodness someone disagreed with you in your thread. The nerve!
Generally speaking, I would say a playerbase without knives sticking out of their backs.
You guys should all go grind that dungeon for ascended gear for WvW… wait a second…
I certainly won’t be recommending this game to anyone anymore. Good thing the only person I convinced to play left well before this patch. I don’t feel so bad now.
Forum posters are the minority not the majority.
How do you know this? I would love if people actually were backing up their claims with some kind of evidence. Not even hard evidence. Anything would suffice, just as long it’s not completely made up.
We don’t know if forum people are a minority or a majority.
So please stop quoting this as a hard fact. This thread has about 100k posts. GW2 sold over 2 million copies.
Even if every single post was a unique person which it’s not even close to being. We need ALOT more posts.
More like 10304 with your post.
I’m against this ascended move, but there is no reason to lie or exagerate.
My bad, typo,
People didn’t believe that forum posters are a minority and wanted some hard proof, Had nothing to do with ascended gear.
You have equally as little proof that the happy players are the majority. I am in a guild full of dissatisfied players; and over half of them have filed for refunds. They don’t post on forums here simply because they don’t have time to burn.
I don’t even know what were are talking about now??
I am not talking about happy or sad. Just how many people post vs how many people play
I dunno if anyone will ever figure out that number… The only reason the whole “vocal minority” thing came into existence was from people (developers, white-knights, etc) trying to justify significant changes by trying to marginalize upset forum posters in an attempt to stop the dissent in it’s tracks. And it usually backfires. Telling someone they don’t have a voice just makes them scream louder.
Lol, it’s kitten near impossible to acquire exotic gear with WvW badges. I can’t imagine the nightmare that it would be to obtain ascended gear with WvW badges.
I take it your server doesn’t organize portal chains through the EB jumping puzzle? That’s an easy 20 badges/char in a few minutes each day. The drop rate of badges from enemy players should be higher, but it’s far from a nightmare to collect enough for a set of weapons.
Hooray, jumping content for PvP rewards. Greaaaaaat….
Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads] – 10,053 replies 114,938 views.
And no response of real value to date. (Nov 17th.)
Now Arenanet ONLY reply to threads and posts relating to Fractual Dungeon and Ascended Gear.
They are not interested in our feedbacks and concerns. It’s either you continue to play and support them or you quit. That simple.
That’s being unfair. I’m sure they are listening very intently right now. Maybe their silence means they’ve been surprised by the fierce backlash and are currently discussing what to do about it. I hope they make the right decision.
Honestly, I’d love to give them the benefit of the doubt, but compare how they used to communicate with the customers and the community with how it’s been recently.
They used to be very transparent. We know exactly what they intended to do with the game. They used to do AMAs on Reddit and Q&As elsewhere.
Now their posts are full of rhetoric and doublespeak. I don’t think they can say anything.
I have to say I think they have a boss who is demanding more revenue from gem purchases or was just with them in angry phone calls or something. Why else would such a stupid change be made just 3 months after release?
I can’t imagine any of the developers, programmers, QA staff or support staff were thinking to themselves “lets alienate a huge chunk of our existing playerbase for fun!” You don’t spend years making a game and try to do something this absurd in one patch unless someone is forcing you to do it.
You can run around WvW and fight and do stuff naked. People have.
Just because you can do something it doesn’t mean it is effective lol. Given the choice between using a hammer or my fist for hitting a nail, I normally choose the hammer.
SWG NGE comes to mind as well. Trying to trade your existing playerbase for a completely different group of players with completely different wants and needs. You know what happens in these circumstances? They will end up with neither.
I don’t think you need them to make a statement. It’s pretty clear they don’t want you (or me for that matter) as their customer.
Apparently, the whole SWG NGE debacle still wasn’t enough to teach future companies that you don’t kill off your existing playerbase for the mystical amount subscribers you imagine your game should have.
Hold on I’ll answer in a sec. I gotta pull the daggers labelled SWG NGE, AoC post-Tortage and GW2 Fractals out of my back.
I think you mean 11 infractions.
Soooooooooo, who wants to guess when the manifesto gets removed? My guess is around Christmas holidays.
Planetside 2? I heard it comes out soon, but not sure if it’s good.
There was no gap between Exotics and Legendaries.
There was no stat gap. There was no achievement gap.
According to you or the developers. The developers felt there was a gap. Legendary still is the top – they haven’t added on top of that gear. There still isn’t a treadmill.
Oh my goodness… he really believes what he is saying.
I guess I just don’t get as upset as you guys. I still have fun on a game that isn’t stringing me a long for subscription fees. I’m just playing the game. However the devs decide to take it – I’m just playing. I have a lot of other things to really be stressed about, and regardless how GW2 ends up that is still me escape from the real world – I’m not going to compound my life with this kind of stuff. Why shouldn’t I take the devs by their word? I’m still not seeing a treadmill, and frankly, if there was one like in WoW, at least I’m not doing it to pay them more money.
Hey, I’m glad you are enjoying it. Honestly, if you are just playing the game and having fun, that’s probably the best attitude a person can have. I’m just tired of being jerked around by MMO companies.
Any game that’s willing to throw their current playerbase under the bus for hamsters and locusts deserves to tank. SWG NGE comes to mind, although this is not even close to that big of a disaster (yet).
This game is all themepark friend.

I’m pretty sure you got the title wrong. It should read “This is now another stagnant MMO” because they are now officially offering identical mechanics to their competitors who have had years of perfect the art of vertical gear-based progression.
Sadly, I think in this one instance we, the folks against vertical progression, are the vocal minority.
I logged in 2 hours before the Lost Shore event started and I saw no one in Lion’s Arch even mentioning/complaining about the new tier. For about an hour and a half I stood there just listening to map chat and still not once did anyone raise a stink about the new tier. When the event did start, there were hundreds of players who showed up to participate causing massive lag all around, but still no complaints/comments about the new tier.
My guess is, these people are indifferent to the idea, and presumably they far out number us here.
Every game I’ve ever played, even the worst of the worst, had big spikes in population on patch day because players eat up the new content. You know, content locusts and all that.
Guild Wars 2 is still very much like Guild Wars as far as gear goes.
You’re kidding right? Almost everything about Guild Wars 2 is different from Guild Wars.
Guild Wars has easily obtainable best in slot gear. Same thing applies to Guild Wars 2. Are YOU kidding?
Best in slot is legendary and you’re saying they are easy YOU are kidding. GW2 is not remotely related to GW1 or that manifesto anymore.
Best in slot is exotic. Minus the rings and back from these new ascended. You can get a max level armor piece from AC in 3 runs. That takes what, 90 minutes tops? How is that a grind.
Legendaries had stats increased to (presumably) ascended. So that’s 4 slots. And when ascended armor gets released in X months, that’s almost the rest of them.

Seriously dude, you are arguing in every thread but you are wrong about almost everything you post.
(edited by NaughtyProwler.8653)
Skydiving is exciting. New items and stats, not so much.
Haha. They should just delete the videos and stuff. At this point it is misleading.
Honestly, I think someone peed in their cornflakes and forced them into this because this patch is a complete 180 from their vision.
And the gear grind starts… Time to find another game it seems
This is exactly how I feel… Kitten this
gear grind or not good luck finding an MMO that has one so small.
The MMO genre is a gong show. I have no problem dropping this game or any other that under delivers. There are loads of great single player and multiplayer games. I hadn’t played an MMO in 3 years before GW2 and I’m perfectly fine with not spending another dime after this debacle for another 3 years.
The gear change is far more than 2% when you think of the ascended armor and weapons they will be releasing. Sorry to say it.
Worst patch thus far. Necro had minor tweaks only (no AI fix? really?), new gear grind added with no end to stat bloat/power creep in sight, new resources without bank slots, added a lot of Destroyer weapon recipes when they are one of the rarer lodestones already, and basically ruined my desire to log in. Oh, and zero changes/updates/info about WvW.
all of you people complaining really irritate me. its like you cant stand change. big deal they changed A PORTION OF THE GAME. IT ISNT THE END OF THE WORLD.
They made a change that was contradictory to their mission statement, for those of us who are responsible consumers and value corporate standards, that is a big deal.
You’ll understand that when you’re older.
no i just like to be open minded and i actually adapt to new ideas and dont just want a MMO that is suppose to evolve to just remain static. it isnt the end of the world. its 1 dungeon. there are other things to do. its nice to see some people are too close minded to figure that out.
There is nothing new about a gear treadmill. In fact, it is the exact opposite of new.
…it isnt the entire game. its one portion and it isnt a gear treadmill. its a form of vertical progression. it doesnt define the whole game.
Ohh…. I don’t have time to explain this. I’ll keep it short and sweet. Vertical progression is gear treadmill. It’s just a nicer, PR-friendly way of saying it.

Give them a chance? That’s what I did when I bought the game.
bridge = burnt
Eh, I’ll just play something else for a while. Worst case scenario it’s just another MMO to go into my video game graveyard (aka. old cardboard box in basement).
Spectral Grasp is a very nice change but no word on AI makes me sad. Maybe they just fixed it anyways.
The only thing that would turn this around for me is if they add a crafting system that would let people upgrade standard exotics into ascended with a small amount of effort.
I noticed this too lately. Kind of weird… but it is not specific to being in combat. I do think it is a bug (or feature?). Once it happened to me twice in a row. I swapped it out and re-equipped and it started to work again.
Okay, so I should basically just hold on to all my gear, resources and gold because ascended gear (as it gets released in stages according to ANET) will surpass exotics so why waste resources on those now?
Bad design is bad. You are essentially telling your playerbase to NOT craft, NOT use the Mystic Forge and hoard their crap until later patches.
Let me guess, this wasn’t designed by the original designers? Because you are telling me basically grind my kitten off and hoard my stuff right now.
I think someone bought every destroyer lodestone this morning. At one point there was only 1 listed so that’s a bit disheartening for someone who was saving up to buy some. The price of course has since skyrocketed as a result. Yay.
I’m not sure what’s going on, but it’s not really fun!
I’m curious what will happen with some of the mystic forge recipes that are costly like Mjolnir, but are not legendaries. Will these expensive items just fall under ascended as well?
Not enough info yet for me, but this could seriously be a big mistake if they don’t do it right. No need to freak out yet though!
