Too much zerging

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: Nettle.9025

Nettle.9025

Lots of people give Anet a hard time about zerging for this update, but I think it’s unfair to do so.

The invasions are actually one of the better open world events put in this game to discourage the zerg. They smartly designed it so that if a server just zergs everything, it fails. Smaller groups are the way to go. It isn’t Anet’s fault if the large majority of people don’t realize this.

Think seriously about it for a minute. How would you design an open world large scale event that isn’t just pounded on by a mindless blob of people? IMO, they didn’t do too shabby.

If you want a more enjoyable experience, try shouting over map chat for people to join a small group to handle events on their own. With as many people in each map, it isn’t hard to find 4 other like minded individuals, and you’ll really help push the invasion to completion this way. Decent way to make new in game friends as well.

You’re either kidding yourself or fairly naive if you didn’t see this nerf coming in this patch.

For the first week there weren’t a ton of people doing it. By this past weekend there were multiple deadeye farmers on almost every arena on every server. It was pretty apparent it was going to be nerfed.

The story seems very shallow.

Scarlet isn’t a well developed villian. Besides a couple minor mentions, she came out of nowhere. There were some really cool theories about how Livia or Ellen Kiel could have been Scarlet, which I think would have been more interesting.

On top of that, do we even know what her motivation is? So far it just seems like she’s a bad guy doing bad things cause that’s what bad guys do.

It’s all so one dimensional, black and white writing with no twists or surprises.

I agree with the OP. Love the fight, and hope we see more challenges like this in the future.

Pre-emptive tl;dr – This is my rant towards all the people constantly crying about buggy and bad mechanics. Feel free to ignore it, but I feel like I have to say something about this now.

Honestly, I’m getting tired of people calling out “bad mechanics” and “buggy fight” and “RNG luck” as excuses. I’m going to be the “bad guy” here and say that many of the complainers are simply not good enough to do this fight. I know it can be hard for some people to admit this, hence they complain about things they shouldn’t. Here are some of the frequent ones I see:

1. The Camera – This is buggy how? What do you expect a game camera to do when you back up to a wall? It seems to be working exactly how you would expect it to. It’s not buggy.

You could argue that the arena is poorly designed. But if you don’t like the camera against a wall, that means you don’t want walls which means you need to fight a) in a large wide open edgeless field, or b) a small platform without walls to obstruct the camera.

If you went with a, the fight would become harder for the people complaining. The further you are from the rotating center, the harder the aoe becomes to avoid for classes without lots of vigor or endurance traits. The aoe field is smaller towards the center and larger the further you get out. A larger open field would cause massive aoe fields unless you are near the middle. And let’s face it, the people complaining about the camera aren’t fighting near the middle like they should be.

If you went with b, people would be falling off the arena left and right. That would cause even worse crying than we have now. I’d be ok with it, but again, harder fight.

Solution? Fight near the center. At only 1 point in this fight are you forced near the edges (the second orb).

2. RNG – What is RNG about this fight? Nothing. The pools spawn in the exact same spot each time in a specific arena. The shadowfall aoe has a set pattern. Liadri has predictable attack patterns. The clones mindlessly walk towards you. The orbs spawn and pull at set intervals. Everything in this fight is fixed and learnable.

3. The Orb pulls – Set intervals and entirely predictable. Have trouble clicking them? Press the cycle enemies key until you get it. Or just aoe in its general direction and watch it die in one hit. Problem solved. I handled this by targeting it at range as a thief and killing it with mug. I had no issue targeting it.

4. One shots – See RNG ^^. The one shot mechanic (the aoe) is predictable and thus entirely avoidable. It takes SKILL to avoid it throughout the entire fight. If you lack the skill required, aka situational awareness and dodging, you lose the fight.

An aoe that only did half the damage would be viable, yes, but it reduces the difficulty substantially. Making it one shot simply increases the skill required to win. This is not a cheap design, this is simply a more unforgiving design. There is a difference. The people who cry about this either lack the skill to overcome it or lack the patience to learn how.

5. Time limit – Provides a sense of tension to the fight. Again, you COULD do this fight without a limit, but it provides additional challenge which causes !gasp! additional player skill to overcome. If people are winning this in soldier gear, I don’t think there’s a problem. If you land the first 3 orbs in a row and attack Liadri steadily with autos after that, you should still be fine.

The two things I think are viable complaints are the aoe color for colorblind people and the possible lag from the zerg below. Neither of them affected me (I am not colorblind and I have a good pc), but I will agree that they need work for those who they do bother. Hopefully Anet learns from these points, but does not cave in to the others.

So Being 1-Shot is meant to be a Challenge?

in Queen's Jubilee

Posted by: Nettle.9025

Nettle.9025

I don’t want challenges in a video game. I come to relax and pwn everything and pretend I’m godlike. I have enough challenges in RL….

Exactly, I have back and neck injuries due to car accident that challenge me 24/7 irl. I come to gw2 to escape and have a bit of fun.

And I come to GW2 (and any other game) to find challenging and satisfying content to play. Does that make me any less of a player than you?

The great majority of this game is casual and doable by everyone who plays, and in turn is not always terribly exciting to players like me. If you want casual fun and godmode, go play the other 99% of the game. There is already oodles of content designed for your liking.

What about players like myself who look for a challenge? It’s not fair that we finally get ONE fight that takes a modicum of skill, and people start complaining like crazy to have it changed. Stop being selfish and let people who share my playstyle finally enjoy a challenging piece of content without constant cries for difficulty nerf.

An MMO will never be 100% geared towards any one person, but it’s unfair to try to shut out a certain play style unless it’s in a niche game clearly advertised as such.

Games are supposed to be about having fun…

Nothing you can accomplish in this game equates to success in real life, which is why, perhaps, people who can’t succeed at real life come here to find something they can do that others can’t, regardless of the complete absence of impact it has outside of the game.

This is a completely vitriolic thing to say. I’m relatively successful outside of this game. Doesn’t mean I can’t look for a challenge in a game as well. Don’t try to tell others what their idea of fun should be either. I actually enjoy difficulty, as do many others. Try to realize not everyone thinks like you do.

Unfortunately there are a few bad apples out there, but it’s not fair to label every farmer like that because of a few. Best we can do is try to be civil. If a farmer is acting like a total kitten and you absolutely need a specific arena, you can ignore him. At worst you added someone to ignore and have to wait 20 seconds for him to get his kill before you get back in. He will probably move anyway if there are others open.

People farming the arena aren’t all inherently elitists or jerks or whatever people are throwing around in this thread.

I’m one of those who prefers to farm with an arena to myself. In general I’m pretty helpful to others, will provide tips and such, etc. But if there are open arenas in the pavilion and someone comes and queues while I’m farming, I’m still going to politely ask them to move. If everything is full up, then I just deal with it until the crowd dies down a bit. It sucks, but it is what it is.

This game is extremely grindy if you want expensive skins or a legendary. Anet forces people to grind gold for an eternity to get these things. This is what pushes people to do farms like this, and when you have the best farm in the game that can be significantly hindered if someone else is queueing with you, of course you are going to have people getting upset.

If you are a farmer, try to be polite if asking for someone to move. No reason to be an kitten .

If you are not a farmer, try to understand that there are 5 other arenas to play in and let the farmer do his thing in peace. If everything is full, then generally find an arena with people who aren’t trying to farm. This is what I did when going for Liadri achievements, and there was no problem with it. People who aren’t farming will tend to be more helpful with tips and such to beat bosses anyway. Farmers usually just like to do their thing in silence.

There’s no stealth inside the arena. That mechanic is working as intended. As for spawning on a mine, I’ve never seen that happen. Perhaps you walked over one?

That would explain why it didn’t work, but then why rule out a number of class mechanics? Is there an npc that explains this?

You may not have seen it happen. This doesn’t mean that it can’t. No, I spawned on top of a mine, not dead centre but underneath its circle.

I highly highly doubt you spawned on a mine. I’ve probably killed deadeye 400 times or more by now, and not once have I ever spawned in on a mine.

The problem with relying on haste and BV (or QZ/RaO on ranger) to kill him is that you rely on long CD utilities that you will have to wait on after each fight. The build I posted above does it a bit slower but has zero downtime between fights. It’s more efficient for a long farm.

Open up shadow shot, turn sideways and drop ambush trap, then BP and then steal. Damage with 1 spam. Keep BP on him at all times, and when he ports SS to him and BP again asap to avoid the snipe. HS to finish him off when he’s low. He should be dead before a 2nd port.

I’ll usually kill him with 6-10s left on ambush trap CD. You can TG instead of ambush when its up for even faster kills, but don’t use both at the same time or you’ll be waiting on the ambush CD for the next go.

If I get an empty arena and really focus I can still pull ~20g/hr. Obviously dying or having to share an arena can drop that quite a lot.

Anet, PLEASE provide more content like Liadri + gambits. I don’t even care if you remove the achievements and rewards attached to it so people won’t complain about not being able to do it. The sense of accomplishment for completing truly difficult content is reward enough.

This game has really needed some challenging pve content, and this has been quite enjoyable for me to play. Fights where I have to custom tailor a build, work out mechanics, and practice the execution to win are exactly what I want.

The only two things I would change would be to rez after dying in the arena (pointless and costly inconvenience if no one is around), and to get rid of the ticket cost for gambits (too costly for me as a mostly pvper to attempt Liadri with multiple gambits).

Dailies - the bane of modern games

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nettle.9025

Nettle.9025

I didn’t read the entire thread, but I do agree with the OP.

Dailies, and I would also throw in achievements, have truly changed MMOs for the worse. Used to be back in the day you would log in and just go explore, get lost, have fun, socialize and kill kitten.

Nowadays, you are presented with a checklist of things you must do every day when you log in (dailies), and things you should do after that (achievements). I understand the devs want these things to just happen by regular play time, but it is simply in many people’s nature to see them as a TODO list they have to finish every day.

I miss the days of actual adventuring in an MMO without all the lists and hand holding. Even with this attitude, its hard for me not to feel the need to check that list off for the daily laurel, or for a few more points for the next achievement chest reward.

MMOs are getting overly convoluted. Sometimes less truly is better.

As for what I’m looking for… good team cohesion and communication, no egos, and the ability to have a bit of fun and take losses in stride as learning experiences. My playtimes are set, so if they don’t work for your team then it won’t work out.

I’m a little picky on team quality, so if it’s not clicking I won’t stick around forever trying to make something happen. That said, I might need a week or two of solid playing to get back in good form. I can and will stream as needed.

Blaming having 2 thieves as "The Reason"

in PvP

Posted by: Nettle.9025

Nettle.9025

It’s really not an issue against average competition. If you were both solo queue groups, guy probably was just being dumb. However, it’s a valid complaint if you’re playing good players.

They offer the things you listed, but if have you more than 1 you will struggle in your team fights. They have to sit back and shortbow, and if they try to brawl in a big fight they will drop very fast to aoe or focus damage. If you lose the team fight, you’re gonna fall behind in the match. It doesn’t do your team any good if you have to bail to live but the rest of them get wiped.

Good players know how to mitigate burst, so it’s harder to pull it off. You need a team to help set it up. S/D doesn’t have that problem, but they have the same issues with eating damage in a big fight.

You only need 1 or 2 true roamers, which is what the thief’s role usually comes down to.

Also, thieves aren’t good at holding points. What thief build are you going to hold a point with? You can’t use stealth. D/D evasion? That falls apart against competent players past a 1v1. S/D evasion? That needs room to work with and won’t be able to hold on to a small point for too long. If you are building a thief to hold a point, you could be playing a class that does it better.

Guy also probably said that cause a lot of thieves he sees are bad. As a solo roamer you need great individual decision making, and as a thief you need better positioning and setup than some of the other classes. Many thieves don’t have that, and just want to Rambo in bursting people whenever they want. Doesn’t work against good people.

Respawn timer resets every 20 seconds. So if you die at 8:00, then you have to wait 20 seconds, as opposed to 7:41 where it’d be 1 second. You can technically get pro at this and make kill on enemies near the 20 second marker, but it’s easy to get caught up in battle.

This isn’t true anymore unless you’re playing a custom server with respawn set for waves. The default in tourney queue is a set amount of time, though it was waves at one point early on.

Find a stealth thief to duel with for like 30 minutes straight to get some practice. Don’t give them your back in the direction they stealthed at, move away from where they stealthed at, and then dodge 2-3 seconds after they entered.

If they are D/P try to CC them after they pop a BP field. If you are successful they just wasted 6i. If they are D/D (is this still even run?) don’t let them close into melee, or just dodge obvious CnD attempts. A thief is extremely vulnerable if you get them out of their rhythm and force lots of wasted initiative.

Caed… Eh. Not so sure. People hype him up a lot and all, but I know that he runs burstier stuff, and I’m not sure I respect that so much. So. No clue.

You shouldn’t disrespect a player’s level because of the build they run. The thing with burst thief is you should not be judging that thief’s skill level by how he can do a burst. I could teach anyone to do it in about a minute. What you should be judging that thief by is their positioning and their decision of WHEN to burst. Unfortunately these nuances go over a lot of people’s heads, and can be entirely missed by most in shoutcasts unless they are being directly spectated.

Positioning is very key for this build, and Caed does it well. Both him and Jumper are very good thieves.

There are a couple other NA thieves out there that are excellent as well, but aren’t as well known and thus don’t get as much love.

What is the new burst build for thieves now?

in Thief

Posted by: Nettle.9025

Nettle.9025

I can’t speak for WvW, but the go to burst build run by high level thieves in tpvp remains 25/30/0/0/15 with D/P SB. Shadowstep, SR, infiltrator’s signet, basi venom.

Mug and either Improvisation or Dagger Training in DA.
Several options for CS… Fury at 50%, side strikes, signet use. Haste isn’t run as often now. Executioner is a must.
Trickery is either TotC if you don’t have the fury CS trait, or flanking strikes if you do.

Air and force or bloodlust on your D/P set. Typically a power rune setup.

Doesn’t hit quite as hard as pre-mug nerf, but it’s still totally viable. Not gonna burst anyone but a GC from full, but you’re doing it wrong if you try that anyway.

The 3 Signets are a bundle , and so is the stolen skill.

This is incorrect. You can go to the mists and test with steady weapons. A stolen skill doesn’t affect your damage. Might be a bug, but that’s how it works now.

People take improv for the chance at a double basi or shadow step.

It’s a solid map. It essentially has a mechanic that can help break up a bunked point, which leads to off point plays to nullify that mechanic. The side points are not far from the mid fight, which means you have to be very aware of back caps by a mobile class. There’s a lot of strategy to the map, and a lot of ways to approach playing it depending on your team comp. Very fun in a competitive match up.

People are coming back though. I personally know of a couple good teams from launch that are practicing again, and I would not be surprised if there were more that I did not know of. There’s also a very real emergence of new teams in NA that has kicked off over the last week. We actually have legit scrimmages popping up on NA now, where before we were just a mash-up of super pug queuing.

Anet has finally given us the beginnings of some tools to start up a pvp scene, and from what I can tell they plan on taking it seriously and improving what they’ve provided. On top of that, we have several members of the community really giving a lot to help kick things off… from casting to organizing tourneys.

Personally, I’m excited to see how far this goes. Now that we have some tools to work with, it just needs a little time.

Thief - too much evade, cleanse and port?

I don’t understand what dueling would prove. Who built the better 1v1 build? Grats that you have WvW friends that are good. Never did I say everyone in WvW was bad, just that the majority are. I’d say the same about hot joiners in spvp.

Perhaps the better way to have stated it would have been… don’t talk about WvW here, because the format is too different. P/D may work in WvW, but is less effective in tPvP. They have to stealth too often to hold anything and they do all their damage from one easily removed condition, in a system where everyone typically has some form of condi removal. That and there aren’t chickens standing around for easy CnDs

1v1 matters. D/P is a stupidly effective duel build that is also the standard for tpvp teams with a thief. S/D is now making its rounds as well. A good 1v1 build like BM ranger forces a team to divert resources. So does the thief, except the time it takes for a BM bunker to kill is nowhere near close the time it takes a thief to dispatch a lone player who doesn’t happen to be stacking toughness.

There are certain builds that are prevented from existing because GC thieves exist. A power necro is not hardcountered much by anything besides perhaps an engineer, and even then the engineer takes some time to kill. A power necro on the other hand might as well die under 5 seconds alone against a thief.

So many classes are forced to spec bunker builds because when a team has a thief or mesmer around, they just stand no chance at staying alive by themselves and need to be babysat by their teams.

Besides another mesmer a D/P thief has no match up to fear against any other GC build.

Whether it works or not in tpvp is also besides the point because I assure you more people play WvW than do upper level tpvp players, and so they have to suffer the consequences of thief design.

See how fun it is to roam as a necro or warrior or non-bunker ranger around in WvW with so many thieves hanging around alongside the odd mesmer and ele. There IS a reason the class is so popular among roamers in WvW. Not only is it one of if not the best 1v1 class however you want to build it, but something like D/P allows you to kill players much faster than other duelist builds based on bunkering and thus reduces the risk of interference from reinforcements.

At this point I’d rather they nerf the hell out of stealth and backstab, let thieves keep their mobility, and give them better sustain by more access to protection/healing on skills. I just don’t agree with a class that can burst so often and kills that fast with the ability to reset the fight many times and completely circumvent other classes’ much longer cd defenses.

That trait for condition clear upon stealthing instead of every 3 seconds after entering stealth is broken, as is the cost of Black Powder given initiative regen builds.

Depends on the D/P thief. A 25/30/0/0/15 can’t make any mistakes in a 1v1. You’re in trouble if you get caught. Against an equally competent player, I should clarify. Against another GC it comes down to who gets caught in the CC first without a stun break up.

A 10/30/30/0/0 however is indeed a good duel build, especially with hidden killer and a soldier’s ammy. A little too much sustain for my tastes in tpvp, but totally viable.

I still don’t get why we are talking WvW roaming on the spvp forum. I thought they skill split now. Also, stats can be hugely inflated there. Full ascended gear with consumables? Hello 2300+ power, 60%+ crit chance, 100%+ crit damage. Without boons. That’s not obtainable in spvp. Then you have the people they kill that may not even be 80 yet. Inc cries for nerf.

I can understand how the class is frustrating in that setting, but maybe you should take your crusade against thieves to the WvW forum. I’m certainly not going to complain about a tpvp problem to a wvw crowd.

Balanced Classes Finally

Balance is not bad. Certainly better than it used to be. Could use more build variety. As a thief I have 2 very different variations of D/P and a S/D build I’d be comfortable playing in a real tourney, so I guess it’s not completely awful. There are weapons and utils for every class that could use some love though.

Also a big l-o-l to the sensationalists in here. A d/d ele that held a point 1v4 and also killed everyone attacking him? I wanna meet the guy that can pull that off.

LOL, i finally find the password for this account.

This account belongs to my friend, he quit this game from the end of last year and never plays anymore.

I hired this account for 2 nights for my alt account, cuz my main account’s rank is pretty high and i cant troll my teammate anymore.

After 13 matches win(trolling) , i bought a new account later cuz my friend doesnt allow me to delete his chara(I BOUGHT A CHARA SLOT IN HIS ACCOUNT FOR MY ENGI FOR ONLY TWO DAYS!!! WTF). So that’s why I didnt play this account anymore.

For your information:
I beat a good team (for “good”, i mean their rank is high, like 10-50 or something, cant remember clearly) for once and some normal teams (like rank 100-500) for like 6 or 7 times, rest is pugs (maybe not, im not sure.)

As u can see, I didnt beat anyone between rank 1-10, but i got rank 7 when my rank first shown on the board.

LMAO What a nice joke.

Actually I’ve already told it to many friends.

The board is 100% kitten now (only for now, maybe it will get better in the future)

no decay, no solo queue, hidden rank = GG

I think u guys should realize it one month ago, dont care it anymore.
Maybe I will make a new chara named “Nice board” for trolling later to catch devs’ attention later, =_=

Anyway, I think that was all the info u were wondering~~

P.S. English is not my first language, I hope you guys wont be confused
^ ^

This is hilarious. Dude trolls for 2 nights on a friends account, wins 1 meaningful game and beats a bunch of mid rank pugs. Gets rank 7 on leaderboard. Quits but is immortalized forever at the top.

Thanks for sharing that

Comebacks are possible, but rare. See the SOAC tourney Saturday… my first match we were up by like 100 but ended up losing by like 30. The thief/guardian match went 500-499 and came down to a last second stomp. Those were exciting to watch.

Unfortunately it doesn’t happen enough.

Comebacks are impossible.

This. Conquests points in GW2 need to be more like Victory Points in Company of Heroes.

That is to say when Red holds one point, Blue holds one point, and no one holds the third point, the score doesn’t tick.

This will drag out matches a bit more, and the game becomes a push/shove rather bunker up.

It’d be nice if the underdog team could stop the score ticker and make a comeback, something that Company of Heroes did extremely well.

I totally agree and actually mentioned this way back during the beta weekends. Adjust the total score to win, and only give point ticks to the team with more caps. The amount of points could be the margin of caps… ie triple capped is 3 points still, but a 2-1 cap is 1 point a second for the team with the 2 cap.

Adjust points for kills and objectives (forest bosses, watch orb, etc). Comebacks would become more feasible and a team would feel like they had a shot all the way to the very end.

I wonder if newer players would appreciate a skill usage list in spectate? Put it on the side of the screen for the current spectated player, and make it unobtrusive. Don’t include the auto attack on that list to avoid spam. Add an option to hide it.

The best way to fix the feeling of unfun when playing against a class is to play and learn the class yourself. The fact that you call a thief unkillable makes me believe you don’t understand the class very well. If they get caught out of position they are one of the most vulnerable classes in the game.
