This is a problem of rating confidence. New players start with an MMR very close to the average of the player base, but their rating is much less confident than someone who has average MMR and 1000 games played. There are three avenues I see that can be taken:
- Care more about games played than we already do. This functionality was actually added recently and replaced rank consideration, but it’s not a very accurate indication of skill.
- Care more about rating deviation. This number is meant to track with rating confidence, and is higher for new players. We could use this for matchmaking, but it’s already being considered in the ratings formula…
- Let the rating system handle itself. Rating deviation is meant to move players quickly to a more accurate rating. Since this player had only played 2 games, you can be sure that his rating deviation is high and his rating dropped dramatically after that game. You may never see that player again.
I prefer the last route as we let the Glicko algorithm do what it does best. We can’t avoid every single bad match up. As you said in your post, it could have been an alternate account. There is no way for the system to know how good a player they are unless they play, and that means a some guesses have to be made along the way.
While I think this is good in the long run, creating a buffer MMR bracket for new players is a great 4th alternative. They can progress through this bracket REALLY fast if they full fill certain win/loss and other glicko requirements that you would know more about.
Dropping people into an average MMR is super frustrating for all parties involved.
So I just got matched with a brand new player, just over 800AP. I even asked him if this is an alt account and how many games he played. He responded MUCH later(obviously being unfamiliar with the chat system) that this is his second PvP game.
Now tell me anet, how the hell does a brand new player get matched like this?
No wonder new players don’t enjoy pvp, they literally can’t even contribute to the match in any way.
This isn’t fun for him, or for his team, hell i doubt it is any fun for the enemy team either.
Sure, this doesnt happen often to the longstanding players, but ALL new players are effected by this idiotic matchmaking.
EDIT : No he wasn’t partied with someone. There is no excuse that I could find for him being matched like this.

The thing you are complaining about rifle engi is the same warriors are complaining about their class… except that not only rifle is affected by this problem, but any of warriors weapons XD XD.
When we complain about the condi spam, isnt necessarly about the condi dmg stuff, but the spam on blind weakness chill is happening in this game, in contrast of the unblockable aoe ground easy target skills. In any decent mmo, melee attacks are stronger than ranged one, in this game not… now we have Decapitate wich is lower than gunflame (is lower than an axe autoattack to be fair) and its almost impossible to land. Now i dont mean that every skill should be like warrior’s one (impossible to land), but would be nice if they would be with the same concept of movement/placement of yourself in order to land.
Yeah warrior is so screwed by EXACTLY this problem, little AOE and no field, single large hit instead of recurring hits.

PvP has massively devolved into a huge mess of AOE and skill spamming with very little reason to do much else.
Before HoT, a lot of niche builds had their place and were fun to play, now you might as well not bother. HoT meta builds or dont even bother.
Every single weapon and build currently in decent use has an extreme amount of AOE or multiple hits. Why is this the case you might wonder? Because blinds, blocks are so prevalent and ease of play of these weapons is.
As an example : Rifle vs hammer engineer.
You won’t see rifle engineers much, because they rely on CC and large single hit burst shots. This just doesn’t work anymore thanks to the over-abundance of random boons and blocks flying around, same goes for blind. I tried running rifle, i get blinded, knowing i can’t CC or dmg using 2-5 skills while blinded i opt to cleanse the condition with an auto, but this doesn’t work at all. There are so many random attacks and fields and stuff flying around that blindness is constantly being applied, I can’t reliably get a overcharged shot off and when i do, by the time I land net shot/blunderbus/jump shot I have been blinded again, even in mid air.
Lets say I don’t get blinded, then I get CCd, because that is rampant too, I stopped counting how many time I would get interrupted mid jump shot from some random un-targeted AOE just to flop down on the ground like a wet noodle with my Predator as useless as a white weapon!
Contrast this with hammer and its constant spamming and multiple hits, its much less effected by these random blocks and blinds since everything is AOE and continues hits, not to mention the bonus finishers it has that you benefit from whether your attacks miss or get blocked or not.
Duelling used to be an exercise in skill, these days its a case of who has the most sustain OR who counters who. You are an engi, sorry, you can’t fight that druid, it won’t be worth your time, even if you do manage to beat him after a 2 min fight.
Whenever I win a fight, I don’t feel skilled anymore, using a metabattle build literally feels like cheating. When I lose the fight, I don’t feel the other person was better either, simply I was countered or outnumbered and unable to get out.
This is where I should be adding my suggestions on fixes as constructive feedback, but sadly… I have no clue anymore, anets series of bad decisions has pushed the game so far as to make it impossible to balance around both old and new weapons, specs, and utilities without a major overhaul.
Sorry to say I have no clue what to do about this situation.
TL:DR.
PvP is a spammy, unfun and no-skill mess.
Scrapper got enough nerfs in the past, u just need to learn how to play against them.
Scrapper are weak against: condi, hard cc, kite. We must have a lot of blocks, invuln and evades because we lack condi cleanse, stability, armor, and range attacks.
The only thing that is patethic, is that you whine in the engi forum that we are too strong in your oppinion.tldr; L2P

well i do not have any stab, bad condi cleanse, a 2 sec invuln noone takes, less armor and less range
so why don’t we buff thief to have all the sustain scrapper has? since that is your way of argumenting about the current state of scrapper ^^Your arguments both dont hold. Scrapper doesnt have the burst Daredevil has, nor the mobility. Besides Daredevils are more about avoiding dmg, rather than blocking or healing it back up.
As weird as it sounds, Daredevils dont have less range than Scrapper.Anyway, Scrapper needs a playstyle change to be a bit less good in 1 on 1 and a bit better in support.
Currently Scrapper is more allround with smaller weaknesses spread out, rather than really specialised in one area, with a big weakness in another.
They are build well for 1 on 1, which raises complaints.
Becoming more supportive and less powerful in 1 on 1 could fix issues, without nerfing them into useless.

This made me laugh. Ele is in a goodspot i thi k. To have the sustain they have now they need to invest in stats, ckerics, scrapper doesn’t and that is where the problem is.
Rational reaction to a nerf demand is rare on this forum.
However a nerf to rapid regeneration is sorely needed. Either that or hammer needa a slight damage nerf and fewer leaps on 3.
This doesn’t mean that other classes don’t need nerfing too, if it were not for the current god tier on scrapper we would have no way to deal with necros at all.

OP is 100% correct. The power creep is too high and the changes were lazy.
The only thing saving season2 is that ESL is restricting the number of professions on a team.
I don’t want to focus too hard on the power creep part, but definitely is impactful.

Well hello there, I am back to write another lengthy post on what is being done wrong in regards to balance from a PVP perspective.
My last 3 posts were quite the rollercoaster, from being completely downtrodden with the state of PvP, to being excited for quarterly balance patches to once again being downtrodden after HoT and leagues.
Now for the reason for my post :
ANET, your last balance patch was lazy with some of the most corner cutting I have ever seen in a gaming balance attempt.
Harsh? Probably. But I suspect that you were pressured for time and unable to release a comprehensive balance patch and instead left us with this drivel. If this is NOT the case and you released this patch believing you had put enough time and thought into it, then tell me know, so I can stop hoping for better days.
Now for some context.
What we were told :
1. Quarterly balance patches, so we can’t expect much more after this patch. BAD
It is obvious that you no longer stick to tweaks, you are making sweeping and massive changes to BASE systems in PvP in an attempt to improve the PvP, this is NOT how to go about it.
You literally are making things worse patch by patch because of these sweeping changes.
2. Getting rid of bunker amulets.
Seems good, but in truth the problem is and never was amulet related, how is it that pre-HoT, the other bunker amulets(besides cele, which is debatable) was never a serious issue?
You guessed it, power creep or more accurately tanky creep. Sure actual power/condition damage received plenty increases as well, but hard mitigation wins out vs increase damage any day. If you 1million damage but your oponent is invulnerable, you really do no damage, for example.
All this serves to do is limit build diversity even more.
There are very many ways to deal with the current state of PvP, most of which have been discussed at length, some examples:
Less access to boons. MUCH less.
More boonstrip/conversion. No necro isn’t enough.
Split PVE and PVP balance. Can’t even begin to describe how important this would be for a competitive game mode. It will open up so many options for real change.
Now before I begin with specific examples I feel its neccessary to discuss how TERRIBLE this power creep is.
It is obviously that you are scared to flat out nerf a class, this is most likely due to the effect it might have on PvE as well as a slight fear of community outcry. This has led to a situation where every patch other classes are buffed to “catch up” in power to the powerful classes. Just looking at some of the patch notes on the 26th, there are tons of flat improvements.
It is time you start nerfing instead.
Thief is probably the most notable lazy buff:
Dagger auto increase, wtf were you thinking here? PvE right? Obviously…
Dagger play style has always been : Setup backstab > hit for large number > Finish with heartseeker. This is overly simplified but that is a quick summary of DAGGER MAINHAND alone.
After your ridiculous dagger auto increase setting up a backstab is a complete and utter waste of time and initiative.
Lets look at the numbers all run WITH fury up :
Auto attack chain takes 3/4 of a second to complete.
I was able to consistently deal 5000 damage in one auto attack chain vs a heavy golem using the stardard metabattle daredevil DP build.
A backstab was able to achieve 4300 not as consistently. This only has a 1/4 second cast but requires initiative, time or a utility to do.
Hearseeker requires 3/4 of a second to complete. At 50% HP consistently hit for 3500 damage. At 25% I got 4200 damage consistently.
So auto chain is literally better that bothering to do anything else on 1 and 2, making the entire design of the weapon utterly and pathetically pointless.
Who thought this was a good idea? Who thought this is what constitutes a BALANCE change? Because it sure doesn’t.
What SHOULD have been done here was that the TOTAL DPS increase should have been distributed over the 3 skills mentioned above to preserve the dagger mainhand play style and promote skillful play instead of mindless spam.
This was just one of many example of why you are incapable or unwilling to balance PvP in this game in any competent manner and since I just noticed my post is hellishly long already, ill call it for now.

Tired of hoping but stubborn PVPer.
I am a huge advocate of boon counterplay in PvP and think that we need more boon removal or less access to boons. So with that in mind I have the below idea for a boon removal skill on the engineer.
I really like the flavour of this trait and would love to have more incentive to use it above the much better Elixir S and Backpack regenerator. Since we are getting some minor trait balances(most likely) with the coming balance patch I thought I would post my suggestion for this trait.
Inversion Enzyme : Conditions removed from affected allies are converted to boons. Enemies affected have their boons removed. Maximum 5 targets.
This could also be a corruption like necro, but I don’t think that fits thematically.
What you guys think?
Lol funny how you think bunker mesmer is still that good. They lose cap contribution easily.
Unbeatable comp would be something like 3 bunker tempests and 2 marauder engis.

I’ve had no problem facing this build 1v1 on small nodes playing Bunker Mesmer. It’s simply a matter of managing your blocks, evades, and stability all in proper order really.

For your 1.1 point, you could elaborate meaning that the icon is “meaningless” for the people who “cheated” by gaming the system for lower MMR… some people have been getting lucky and climbing divisions through solo-queue.

Its very obvious that a lot of people are unhappy with the league system as currently implemented, but I would like to reiterate some of those points and also bring one last point to the table – as per title.
Fair warning, this may be a bit disjointed!
1. Some basic things that have already been discussed :
1.1. Promotion of skill(or lack thereof) :
This is an extremely important part of any PvP system but seeing someone having the tags next to their name denoting the different leagues means almost nothing.
I would even go so far as to call it a MUCH larger grind than the previous iteration of ranked leaderboard.
1.2. Abuse and manipulation :
This has been discussed to death but its obvious that the entire system is riddled with flaws and ways to gain pips and so called “prestige” in doing so.
The reasons this is possible is manifold, and I don’t want to go into all of them.
But the biggest problem is the fact that MMR and leagues are way too disconnected and almost contradict each other in so many cases.
And finally the reason for my post.
2. Punished for being a longtime PvPer :
We, the PvP population that are unwilling to abuse the system in any way and have played for a long time are being punished for it.
We have the most settled MMR, which means our winrates have settled on near 50% or as close as it can get. We are essentially relying on matchmaking to get lucky and match us in such a way as to gain a point even when the game was lost. My most pip gain is when we are facing a 5man premade and still lose the match, this is frustrating and unfun but I find myself HOPING for it just so that I can advance in leagues.
The other alternatives are dishonest and literally is something I (and im sure many others) are unwilling to do.
A simple but not perfect solution would have been to reset MMR completely for season 1, this would have alleviated a lot of issues and even created a lot more healthy PvP environment.
Why was this not done?
This would still leave a lot of holes for exploiting and manipulation, but at least the start of the season would have gone better.
Guess I am just upset that Season 1 is unplayable for me now.
Another reason to disable ranked and reset pips/MMR
The latest abuse of losing intentionally to lower your MMR and freely gain pips.

I’m not a top pvp player but it took me less than 2 hours to find out how to beat them 1v1.
In teamfight it’s a bit more tricky…
The DH is a prof what you do not want to be unchecked…

If a DH is in melee range get ready to dodge/break, if in range reflect/invu and send a bruiser out there.

Justice: Have to be facing target, cast time, generally single target (can hit multiple, but have to be lined up), can be evaded. The pull has a 40 second cooldown.
Resolve: Obvious cast time/delay that can and does get interrupted
Courage: Now has a cast time – cannot be used in the middle of another action.Clear trade-offs – and you just left out/ignored the fact that the Spear pull is on a separate cool down which is nearly double your example of another pull.
2.1 Instacast traps, they might as well not be called traps. So more unblockable, instacast CC, or if not CC, healing then.
Mechanically these don’t make sense and should not be instant at the very least.
I don’t care what you have to say about how easy DH is too counter or whatnot, mechanically broken. Period.Hah. Only 2 are instant cast, and one of those is utility (not the heal.) They’re instant cast, not instant effect, as they have an activation time just like all traps.
But hey, when you have to exaggerate, lie, and get the actual facts absolutely wrong to make your point, it’s pretty clear even you didn’t think the facts were actually enough to make it sound as bad as you wanted.
Or you’re just totally ignorant and have no idea what you’re talking about. So was it malice or stupidity that you got all the facts wrong?
Very well, I was not aware that the pull had a separate cooldown to the spear itself.
Comment still stands that it is a very low cast time unblockable CC, sure not that regular, but still mechanically broken.
Test of Faith is NOT a utility and is instant cast. 1 heal, 1 damage/cc, 1 utility instacast.
I won’t respond to anything else you said because you are obviously just here to defend DH, which isn’t the point of the thread.

Now how do i feel? Frustrated, irritated and almost disgusted in the lack of balance passes before leagues.
This is not how you start a competitive season.
But lets get into a few more detail :
For clarity, this is not THIS is OP, that is too strong or everything is whatever.
This post will PURELY focus on BROKEN mechanics that are inconsistent with previous skill design and goes against everything that should be considered healthy for a PvP game based on conquest.
Some examples :
1. Distortion(and other invulnerability) and contribution to capture point.
How is it that this is different on well of precognition? Which is a 5 target distortion?
Ive seen duo Mesmers bunker a cap to all living hell with them being completely immune to damage for great lengths of time.
They can savestomp with ZERO counterplay, which is unprecedented.
You can’t strip distortion.
You can’t cleave downstate people.
There literally is NO counterplay whatsoever.
The same goes for invulnerability(or take no damage) on other classes, druids specifically have so much flat damage mitigation that don’t count as a block while they are still able to contribute to cap.
2. Dragonhunter 2 points that i find complete BS :
2.1 Virtues being 10x better than on base guardian with essentially no trade-off.
Spear of Justice has a 20 second untrated cooldown, does a reasonable amount of damage both power and condition damage and the best part of all has a quarter second cast time which is almost untelegraphed and is an UNBLOCKABLE pull.
I mean COME ON! Who thought this was a good idea?
Compare that to the nearest other skill that does the same, magnet on engineer, which has a 25 second CD, one and a quarter second cast time and a very obvious animation and NO damage AT ALL but does the same thing.
I mean COME ON ANET? A 12 year old could see this is unhealthy for the game.

3. Revenant : despite being super overtuned in all aspects of the game, the Glint heal is just stupid mechanically.
“Stop attacking him”, and “l2p” cry the masses, however I say,
that in a teamfight, please tell me you would would stop attacking 2-3 other players just to avoid cleaving a glint heal? Because if thats the case, I don’t want to play this game anymore. If this was the ONLY heal the revenant had, i would be less worried and frustrated because they would be risking less dueling potential, but the fact that it isn’t, is MIGHTY frustrating and again BROKEN.
This isn’t an exhaustive list of broken mechanics or balance issues that exist in PvP right now, however, these are some examples that should have been noted and nerfed BEFORE even getting into BETA gameplay as mechanically unhealthy.
The fact that they have not been fixed post leagues launch a month after release is infuriating and almost unbelievable.
ANET, you done kittened up, but can you fix it?
Can you fix it and actually prove your balance competence in future?
When will you realize that PvP and PvE balance should be split?
When will you realize that a dedicated balance team THAT ACTUALLY PLAYS PvP regularly is required?
Once again, I am sincerely tired of hoping.

Why are not the old bugs (which still not fixed) in your list it makes no sense to make 2 lists and 2 threads.

Incendiary ammo’s burn duration increase is being calculated wrong in the tooltip;

FIrewall disabled.
Connection testing perfect.

Yes. I’m not getting an error but I frequently hit 0kb/s and it just sits. I’m overseas so the ping sucks (200-300) but this shouldn’t affect the speed this much
