Ori chal miau……………
Pssst….
If you took a bit longer to look at the trading post you probably would have seen loads of lvl400 epics on sale….
That’s items that where crafted and that didn’t return any XP to the crafter….
I wonder…. are these people doing it for fun, because they are very silly, or because the crafting fairy made them do it…..
It can’t have been because it would make them a profit….
TLDR >>> I’m not looking for a super fast way to make gold, I’m just wondering why having 400 crafting is practically worthless. :/ (aside legendary crafting and lving your alts of course ;3 )
I think you are indeed looking for a super fast way to make shinies…
You found this forum, now you just need to find the search feature and start digging for some of the really good posts from this community detailing how to make a profit from crafting.
Or you could just use maths and add things up…
It’s a benevolent manipulator, tirelessly manipulating the prices of ectos down so that we all can have a bit more silver.
What exactly are your objectives with crafting?
Would you like to use your crafting profession to gear your character?
-It’s perfectly possible to use crafting to gear your character. My most recent character to reach level 80 (warrior), I’ve used both weaponsmithing and armorsmithing to gear him from 2 to 80. Crafted weapons and armor of rare quality are usually better than most karma stuff that you get from the heart guys.
By using crafted gear I was able to limit my karma and TP purchases and found that usually a rare quality item would be competitive up to 10 levels from the requirements. After hitting level 80, all the epic armor / weapons that you craft are as good as anything else that you might acquire with karma / dungeon tokens / drops, with the exception of ascended gear.
Would you like to use your crafting profession to make profit?
Also possible, at least as a weaponsmith / armorsmith. Not all the items that you can craft are profitable, but if you take the time to study the market you find plenty of opportunities to make a quick profit. In fact, I’ve done and continue doing healthy profits with weaponsmithing at every level.
So, what exactly do you think is wrong with crafting?
Meanwhile the price of vials of powerful blood are steadily increasing… Go figure…
Tax is fine.
They should add two things:
1- A 5% tax on bidding orders that are still free atm and mainly used by people playing market and we dont like them.
2- Items like gear, jewels, weapons that you find, drop, craft can be sold on the TP. Once bought they become account bound and can’t be sold again. Once again we don’t like people playing the market.
So basically what you are saying is that people should pay more for their crafting materials and crafted goods.
If for example you are putting a buy order for 250 vials of powerful blood for 1 copper more than the most expensive buy order you are giving 2.5 silver to people who those vials dropped for.
By selling them again for 1 copper less than the less expensive sell offer you are saving someone 2.5 silver.
Why is this a bad thing?
The armor you wear should complement the build (traits) you are using. You should start by gaining an understanding of what all the stats in the armor mean and then decide which one works best with your play style.
Not having a high level thief or engineer myself the advice i can give you is pretty limited, maybe you should try the thief and engineer forums for some more in depth advice.
If you have exotic armor already from karma or dungeon tokens, the crafted sets won’t give you any stat advantage over those, they are there if you are looking for a particular set of stats to run with.
Orion i would apply for the job, if i knew i had the freedom to develop the game in such a way that gamers would like it.
Instead of people sitting down, getting an idea, and executing it so well that it sells. As soon as you take a good idea, and start pandering to people so it would sell better, it wont be as good. Or at least as unique and original. Thats why you see all these mmos fail nowdays.
Games should find their niche, or create one, and not pander to the people playing games.
I’ve got a challenge for you!
You obviously got some big ideas of how to make the perfect MMO, instead of kittening about this one, why don’t you write your manifesto, I would work a bit on that if I were you, and then get it going through crowd funding!
Should be really easy!
Your problem is essentially sorted! Please keep us posted about upcoming features, or thinking about it, don’t keep us posted, wouldn’t want you to “pander” to people playing games.
If something you are crafting isn’t returning a profit it has nothing to do with the amount of taxes.
It’s really a combination of not enough people wanting that particular item and plenty of other people blindly crafting it anyway and then selling at a loss. The smart crafter will study his target market before purchasing the mats.
2 80’s here. Mesmer and Guardian. Working on Warrior (65) and elementalist (46) at the moment. But the objective is to get 1 of each class to 80.
Have you got your goods in a invisible bag?
Last time it happened to me this was the cause.
Hey Kiyuuh, welcome to Guild Wars. Hope you enjoy it!
A lot of people use crafting to level their characters and a huge chunk of the blues you see on TP is the end results of that. Add to that the fact that blue items aren’t soulbound and you can wear it for a couple levels and dump it on the TP again.
I seem to recall the endless tears that the previous dailies caused because it “made” you play a certain way!
Now you got choice, but clearly it’s still not enough! I can only imagine that when Anet creates a 200 option choice dailies and everyone is doing the 5 quickest ones there will still be some kitten complaining in the forums that “I like to RP being a bar wench in Queensdale tavern and the daily doesn’t reward my play style. Anet lied to me when they say play as you want!”
By the way, average time to complete the daily before 25-30 minutes. Average time to complete it now 20-25 minutes.
MMOs are constantly evolving. Myself I prefer this model that they releaee content as its done instead of waiting months and get everything together in a expansion.
He could be Swedish or from the island of Madeira. Both have blue and yellow flags. Not my favorite color combination, but not the worst I’ve seen as well.
Many players will agree that there is not much oportunity on TP (the very few ones are before and after major patch)
Might those “many” players be the ones not using the TP for profit opportunities?
This player sees opportunities ALL the time. And I only started playing after the November patch that supposedly ruined everything.
In this case I think it’s definitely a case of L2P the TP.
You all must have skritt for brains! Everyone knows that you can’t make a profit from crafting as everything you can craft is near to worthless.
Don’t you guys read the forums instead of creating threads about making shinies with imaginary sales!
Stop spreading these lies, tricksy skritts!
This isn’t meant to be a criticism of any system, I’m just looking for information. I really enjoy crafting and this game’s recipe based system, so I leveled up to 400 just for fun and have no regrets. But I do have some questions!
It looks like anything you could possibly want is already on the market for much less then it would cost to make it yourself. So if you are looking for equipment it’s better to just buy stuff then to craft it.
At the same time, it looks like the raw components sell for more then crafted items. For example, if I have 3 small claws and some ore, I would make more selling them separately then I would combining them into an item and selling that item.
Are there hidden recipes, BOP items, or some other system I’m not aware of that adds benefits to crafting? Or it a losing game you take part in for the fun and xp?
Not every single item is profitable to craft and you are right that there are a large number of items that it’s cheaper to just buy it straight from the TP (it really confuses why someone would go to the trouble of crafting a lvl400 epic sword and then put in the TP for less than the cost of the materials, but that just makes you realise that there is a huge amount of people with skrit for brains).
Saying that there is a huge amount of weapons and armor that are very profitable to craft.
Blues and Greens usually aren’t profitable, but there’s profit to be made on rares and epics all through out the levels.
- Have you bought your karma recipes for insignias / inscriptions?
- Have you bought any of the karma recipes that are sold by the heart NPCs on the lower level areas?
- Have you checked to see what are the most appealing skins for each particular weapon?
- Do not take the information on GW2Spidy at face value. Just because it says that something isn’t profitable to craft there, doesn’t mean that it is so. Several times when adding the figures manually I find that their information is way off.
- Just because the great sword of fire is selling at a profit at the moment doesn’t mean that it will still be profitable 6 hours from now, identify the opportunity, react and sell it as quick as you can.
Crafting is both useful and profitable, but you take from it exactly what you put in. The ones that are willing to spend some time and study what your potential customer wants are the ones that are gonna turn a profit.
Maybe you can tell us how much play time you invested.
1500 hours. (i think its like 1575, or close). during the week i play 2-3 hours each night before bed, and on weekends, i play 18-20 hour days
That’s the point! This is impossible for “a few” people.
Maybe you should accept that this is something that won’t be achievable by you. See I’ve always wanted to climb Mount Everest, but as the years go by I realize that my life style will make it impossible for me to achieve that particular goal. That is something that I’ve come to accept.
Ya, it’s reached a stage that whenever i see someone at a node I make a point of remembering the name in case it teleports away.
Surely they are worth whatever people are willing to pay for it. I made an asura guardian specifically because I love the look of T3 heavy armor. The stats / quality is completely irrelevant as I will transmute it into whatever stats I want to.
In fact they should be probably double the cost, 100G is very easy to get.
As others have said the game needs to cater for a whole spectrum of different players. My playstyle actually resembles your quite closely, but I’m of a different opinion. Most areas of the game you can do very easily, especially if you are only downscaled and not playing somewhere that is a few levels above yours.
There needs to be some zones or some areas within all zones that are a bit more challenging. While those areas shouldn’t be mandatory, they should be there to provide a challenge to anyone that desires one.
I would even go as far as making those areas a requirement on the Exploration title track so as to make it a true achievement instead of just ticking a shopping list of places you visited.
Who cares if it has vertical progression or not! You have absolutely no means to compare your own effectiveness in PvE against other players, apart from a “feeling” if you are doing good or lagging behind.
The stat difference that you get for Ascended will not save you against that big kitten zerg in WvsW and proper PvP is fought on an equal footing.
No amount of rings / amulets / armor will make my mesmer kill stuff faster than my guardian or warrior.
frans is right. There’s no reason to craft in this game, most people that craft for profit are delusional as clearly there is no profit in crafting as everyone keeps telling us on a weekly basis and all the stuff that they craft is bought by imaginary customers with imaginary gold to use in imaginary characters.
I never saw this guard Lynn or even know what items / currency she used/gave/guarded…
Even not having the least amount of interest in her or her whereabouts I knew she was leaving.
Read the patch notes / read the forums! You find all sorts of interesting stuff!
Does sPvP give you any bonus to almost every action you take on the PvE world? Didn’t think so!
Does WvsW give you a bonus to almost every action you take on the PvE world? It sure does!!!!
Is WvW and PvE connected? They sure are!!!
Would you (and just you) be willing to FOREVER stop having those bonuses in exchange for having world completion without completion the of the WvW maps?
Would you be happy to receive 1 (one) Gift of Exploration and a silver star for completion of only the PvE maps?

11 . Daily done!
No matter how many choices you actually have, you’ll never be happy. There will always be something to kitten about.
Here’s a hint. If you know that dailies are easier done on the starting areas and are that cheap that you don’t want to travel from Orr with your main, park a alt in one of them. You get to level it a bit each day and complete the daily in the process.
You give them an inch, they ask for a mile….
As far as I am aware, MF is personal. Like DR is personal.
It’s a stupid mechanic, it should be removed completely and the drops re-balanced taking into account the absence of that stat.
It would then improve the drops for the population in general and we wouldn’t have to run gimmicky set-ups in the hope of seeing some gold drops.
But does it promote a more skilled way of play?
Is kitting the boss here different from kitting the boss in other MMOs?
If you only ever played a DPS class in other MMOs i suppose that there is a lot more things to worry about. If you played a tank or healer class, in my opinion, it feels a bit lackluster.
At the moment 186% on my guardian. And I definitely notice a big improvement on the quality of the drops when i’m running it.
But never, EVER, in a dungeon or party…. That is just wrong!
My point is that combat here feels different, but from that to say that boss encounters are dynamic is a bit of exaggeration.
The boss encounters are exactly like any other MMOs with the ONLY difference that the boss isn’t tauntable, so it will usually lock unto someone after some mysterious alchemy. Myself I believe that they are somewhat racist, and just lock into whatever race they dislike the most…
Pressing V instead of S or A to avoid fire, isn’t the pinnacle of skill.
I think the trade to trade system is looked down upon by Anet mostly because of all the spam it generates – “selling 3 jute cloth!” No ty I don’t want to see that it was bad enough seeing all that the first month of this game due to the tp being dead.
I don’t think that’s the reason, because people would use the trade chat which can be ignored etc.
I think Anet just wants full control on the market.
Didn’t work, because a large portion of people ignored trade chat some clever blokes started advertising their wares in general chat, soon everyone and their dog was advertising their wares on general chat, forcing us to ignore general chat, and un-ignore trade chat…
Black Lion Trading Post is the best thing they done in GW2.
Here’s a question, as Arenanet are attempting to make a more fluid, natural and dynamic MMO wouldn’t the boss encounters feel random if everytime you went in the conditions were slightly different due to things like group set up, RNG etc..? is this a good understanding of a dynamic encounter, one that isn’t the same two times in a row wheresas in a traditional MMO the boss mechanics are exactly the same everytime and you are forced into a set group makeup ie The Trinity. I imagine in warfare no two battles are exactly the same, you have to think on the fly and change according to the conditions presented to you at that time, not a preset set of movements like its an MMO ballet. This will then give the dungeons or boss fight a fresh feel everytime you enter them.
Must be terrible for the GW2 wiki writers to describe all of these dynamic boss fights that feel fresh and different every time. I myself have stopped reading the wiki because every time I try an encounter it goes completely different from what was described… True story, seriously…
The 15% listing fee kills any and all profit to be made. The average price of the finished product is rarely high enough in comparison to the total cost of the materials that you will end up making a profit.
Crafting in the hope that all your products are going to be profitable is deluded at best. It’s been stated time and time again that there is profit to be made if you look for it and that is counting with the 15% cut on materials and subsequent 15% cut on finished product.
As a comparison, in TBC/WotLK WoW Jewelcrafters where the most/only profitable profession, but 99% of your profit came after you reach max level.
In GW2, not every product is profitable, but you have profit opportunities at every tier. In fact, as a weapon smith and armor smith I’m hovering on both profs in the early 300’s and both have been really profitable so far.
How can you be a victim if in the process of rolling your character in a PvP server, you where aware of the rule set in that server?
You know what we used to do to people that went in to the Barrens to gank low levels? We killed them and then camped them ourselves.
I’ve got very limited experience with MMO’s, I’ve only played GW1 / WoW / GW2, but in at least those 2 last ones there was this wonderful thing called Map Chat, where you could ask your fellow faction members for help if there was someone or a group of someones determined to harass you. Or maybe you could use that other wonderful function called Guild Chat to summon willing allies to help you with your fight.
If I go into a pit full of crocodiles I can’t reasonably complain afterwards that the crocodile bit me when my back was turned, entering that pit I am aware that crocodiles do bite.
As for the question of fairness… There is no fairness and there never will be… MMO’s aren’t balanced with 1vs1 in mind. As a mesmer in GW1 I was virtually unkillable if I knew before hand what class I was playing against.
Likewise in GW2 some classes fare a lot better against other classes…
If you roll on a PvP server you accept the fact that you are going to win some battles and are going to lose some as well. That’s what it makes it interesting!
Just today, I went from 5g to 35g through crafting alone (using only the 5g I had and nothing else).
Bullkitten…………………
100% agreed with Esplen. When I first asked the question: Is crafting profitable? I started by putting 5g on a character and seeing what I could do. When my first round of working through 5g worth of raw mats returned me 7g, I started rolling again with 7g, and again, and again…..
But Wait! Doing this successfully requires the same amount of effort as running dungeons successfully, or the same effort as farming Plinx and just selling the mats! It’s not any better!
Obviously then, crafting is Not Profitable and the system is broken!
Okay, sorry for the sarcasm, but here’s the point blank fact: Crafting for profit does require effort, just like farming events or running dungeons. And you can get returns that are equal or better in other areas of the game…. so, if you like those areas of the game more: DO THAT INSTEAD!
It takes a certain skill set to turn a consistent CoF p1 run in under 10 minutes. Not everyone does it (despite what you read in the dungeon forums.) Likewsie, it takes a certain (different) skill set to turn 5g into 35g with crafting.
Guess what: The game will let you do either, and make money, doing something you enjoy.
If you don’t enjoy doing what it takes to profit via crafting, then play other areas of the game. It’s okay. Really, I promise.
I wasn’t saying in any way that crafting isn’t profitable. I do a substantial amount of my gold through crafting. That was just my expression of disbelief that you could invest 5G and turn it into 35G in the space of one day.
I understand the principle of buying the mats, crafting, selling, turn initial cash + profit into more mats, rinse and repeat.
I’m just convinced that a 500% capital gain in the space of a day is impossible.
Then again… maybe I got some more stuff to learn….
From purely economic terms sell it. In the short/long run you will do a lot more gold. But if it gives you pleasure playing with the RNG and knowing that all your unlocked dyes where discovered by your character just go for it.
I tend to identify mine and use it on the character that found them. By some weird quirk of the RNG my mesmer has mostly pinks and purples…
Okay! So in response to those claiming open world PvP is what the majority wants, heres some actual data. This is the WoW server populations as of right now and it does not look good in your favour…
Normal (PvE World + Instanced PvP)
New Players (Lowest): 1
Low: 0
Medium: 96
High: 9
Full: 2
TOTAL: 108PvP (Open World PvP + Instanced Pvp)
New Players (Lowest): 1
Low: 47
Medium: 35
High: 8
Full: 4
TOTAL: 95So not only are there more PvE servers than PvP servers, but a notable number of the PvE servers have a higher population than PvP; while there are obviously still a good number of PvP players, the PvE players very much outnumber them.
Just to assign a little metric to them, if you assume a new/low pop server is worth 1, medium 2, high 3 and full 4 points, you’d get:
PvE: 1 + 192 + 27 + 8 = 228
PvP: 48 + 70 + 24 + 16 = 158So, do tell me about the majority wanting open world PvP again :>
Using your numbers I wouldn’t disregard what 40% of the population want. Thank you for proving that in fact PvPErs are not a small vocal minority and that in fact are a substantial part of at least that game’s overall population.
I wonder if the same thing would apply to GW’s population or if magically GW only attracts one type of player. Judging by the popularity of WvW I do not think so.
And for a company that gave us dynamic events and level scaling I do not think it would be beyond their capabilities to create a system that prevented or punished low level (newb) ganking.
As for attacking someone while they are already attacking a mob…. it’s terrible that your enemy will not send you a mail in advance stating that they are about to attack you. And then again, those situations don’t go every time in favor of the ganker. There’s no better feeling that by your skills alone to gank the ganker.
I understand that it’s a new game with different mechanics. I know that the fact I miss that type of gameplay will not change the game, nor am I asking it to. I’m just saying that the healer / tank gameplay is something that I really enjoyed and that is sadly missing in GW.
My first MMO was GW1 and there was no tanks in that game either, and at the time it was fine.
After playing WoW i realized that there had been something missing all along. The classic trinity promoted a structure and encouraged team based play. On my first WoW dungeon I met 1 player with whom I would do dungeons / pvp / all sorts for the rest of my time in WoW. I met my guild leader and great friend soon after running another dungeon.
Maybe in my case I was fortunate with my experience, I can count with the fingers of one hand the times that I had to wait for a healer / tank. But then again I played a druid and could do all roles. Kinda how I wish guild wars would be. Anet removed the 3 and left us with 1.
Sure there are new combat mechanics, dodge, and combo fields, but again that only addressed the problem that dpsing could be a bit boring on traditional trinity games.
Healing and Tanking weren’t boring unless you outgeared the dungeon. Or maybe I felt that way because I was never one to use addons that did stuff for me.
So this is my opinion, I know that it won’t change anything, but as with every other opinion, it’s a valid one.
I suppose I would. Debating at the moment if I should delete my Asura Elementalist (lvl 43) and Asura Engineer (lvl18) just because I’ve got a surplus of Asura characters…
Apart from dungeons you can solo everything in game! Why would you need heroes / henchies for?
In GW1 you could only solo in certain areas and with some specific gimmicky builds.
I will present to you guys a revolutionary concept:
PvE servers – Where all the players that do not find PvP fun can roll their characters safe in the knowledge that no player will ever be able to attack them.
PvP servers – Where all players that find PvP interesting can roll their characters in the knowledge that they have signed in a server where they need to watch their backs, as there might be someone not so friendly watching.
It confuses me why PvE only players would have anything against the existence of a type of server where they wouldn’t have to play. It wouldn’t affect you in the slightest.
Just because someone wants a PvP server doesn’t mean that they are a griefer/ganker, some people truly enjoy leveling in an environment where you have to what your back and build strong community relationships.
It really annoys me the way that PvPers are portrayed by the PvE crowd, as if we had a monopoly on all the kitten How many threads about scammers, dungeon elitists, people that kick just before the final boss do we get each month?
And the old “there’s games already out there that cater for your particular play style”…. There’s games out there that have working LFG tools, that have working Guild UI interfaces, that have dungeons where the norm is to play the encounters and not to exploit them, should we all migrate en mass to those games as well?
And that’s what I would be using if I had the skill to program such a thing. As my skill only allows me to use old fashioned math and spreadsheets that’s what I use.
If you undercut so drastically just to prove a point against the “evil” flippers, surely you must have realised by now that the task you set yourself to is like trying to drain an ocean with a bucket. By all means carry on if it makes you feel happy.
I spend less than 1% of my game time staring at the TP. It took me a few hours to develop the spreadsheets that calculate what I should craft, but nowadays I just need to get the mat prices and finished product. I don’t normally flip items, not because I got anything against it but because I find it boring and not very financially rewarding. I do all that and still manage do do several events a day, do the daily in pve and pvp and get a few levels for the alt i’m playing that particular day.
What aspect of the game am I missing out do to my dealings with the TP??
Almost kitten myself laughing! First time I’ve seen a screenshot taken with a actual camera!
Getting same problem! With yesterday’s build it was bad, with today’s build it is worse! For kitten’s sake whatever gerbil is not spinning the particular wheel responsible for this it’s time to feed him to the cats.
