Dueling is an extremely casual activity. It does not need leaderboards, extensive balancing, anything. It’s a time filler and a way to experience facing a live opponent without making any kind of time/gear/learning commitment. Examples:
1) Waiting for the 5th party member to show up while they’re emptying bags
2) Waiting for newbie to finish watching long cutscene or redo a long trash run
3) Waiting for Marionette to spawn, because you don’t want to get queued
4) Waiting for ladder matchup
5) Waiting for buy orders to fulfill on TP
6) Newbie wants to fight a live player
7) Curiosity of how your PvE build stacks up against another PvE build

SPvP requires finding a new area/leaving your current area, setting up a new build using gear that has different stat allocations than PvE, learning what the game/arena types are and how to join them, etc. All of this is confusing and intimidating to anyone new (or not new) who just wants to try their hand at poking at a friend or other player without any serious commitment.

Which is fine. But we shouldn’t want to make the Grenade kit more powerful, but rather to bring many other things to its level in PvE.

What? Getting better gear improves everybodies damage, but grenadekit in particular shouldnt be allowed to scale up?

That’s not what I meant. The Weapon damage should affect every kit, just like the Weapon’s stats and upgrades apparently do.
I just further responded on how the OP asked for a 30% damage increase on the Grenade kit in addition to having kits scale with Weapons entirely;
We should rather want anything but the Grenade kit to have such a damage increase, just to make at least a handful of builds practically viable.

Well i don’t even know why we waste time with this theads . . . anet listens less every day.

I think it’s very unlikely that the majority doesn’t want the map “deleted”. Perhaps removed from SoloQ.

Something that does seem to be fairly universal among both yea- and nay-sayers, is the opinion that the Skyhammer as an enviromental weapon is too strong and should be possible to be evaded and/or blocked.

1.Living story fun only last for…… a week? While the fun of Dueling last forever. Dueling at anytime, anywhere, thats kinda epic. Dueling at the highest peak of Maelstrom?….

2.It helps newbies to horn their skill while preventing them from being thrashed at the current hotjoin, or custom 1v1 map….

3. Through my experience of mmo for 10 yrs, i make the most friends in dueling during end game….

Now dear Arena, what is the main reason from holding you guys to implement the dueling system?

Very good points! I’m looking forward immensely towards seeing and practicing dueling in this game! I still think that it should be disabled in the core areas of the capitals, and that you should need to tag yourself with an icon to show that you’re willing to duel.

hey guys so atm engineer kits are scaled to an exotic dagger for stats

Also, I think they fixed this already. I looked it up on the wiki, and the kits scales to your weapons stats. Perhaps you’re right in a way, because it doesn’t specifically says that it benefits from both attributes and weapon damage.

also please buff grenades by 30% to revert the nerf u did last year so we are onpar with every 1 else again !

Just… Wow. Grenades are even stronger than Bombs, which are Melee while grenades are essentially the same thing, just @1500 range.
You can’t legitimately use anything but Grenades in PvE in competent groups since they just blows everything else out of the water! I suppose that Bombs still are an alternative, but they are just as dull to use.

I can’t play my Enginner in PvE anymore since I came to this conclusion; These 2 kits are just too boring. And unlike the rest of the professions, we don’t have much of a choice. Personally, I think that this is absolutely the biggest flaw of the engineer in PvE by far.
If I’m wrong, prove me wrong, because I really want to be wrong.

Its not that necromancer ar bad form a blance stand point (atleast in pvp, i dont know about pve)

But this is the actual problem in PvE: Necros are overall weaker than the rest. Even if a Necro specializes in doing something, there’s usually someone that can do it better, with more ease, and still have more cards down their sleeve.

Anyways, we have some really meaty attacks on the rifle, which I don’t think we should change… Or even need to change to look any cooler. We don’t “kneel and take a precise shot” we “shoot a bullet at their general direction which is so powerful that it leaves us both flying 9 meters through the air from the earth-shattering explosion”

This might be a solution:

What if instead of having the option to ‘Disable’ duel requests, you must ‘Enable’ them instead (bare with me). If you’ve Enabled the ability to receive duel requests, you’ll have a PvP icon somewhere on your portrait.

This would make it obvious who might, or absolutely won’t be up for a duel, since you presumably need to right click their portrait to ask to duel in the first place.
Perhaps you should only be able to request duels from people that have this ‘Tag’ on?

It would also make it an active choice to allow duel requests, rather than it being an active choice to disable these requests. Point with this is that it would make a difference in mentality; Instead for being a boring snob for not accepting duels, you instead have people actively showing their interest.

Evasive Arcana is not a DPS build.

We’re talking at least 25 points in fire, 20 in water for 10% extra damage avbove 90% health and 20% extra damage on vulnerable targets, and at least 10 in air for bolt to the heart. Another 10 on earth for the extra damage when within 600 range from target.

It is not part of a full out offensive build as you’ve described. I can see Elementalists being very fragile in such a build.

I don’t think it’s very reasonable to say that Elementalists have the worst survival, just because that might be true if you build like this, when the opposite is true if you use (i.e.) 30 in Arcana (which is by no means a “defensive” tree) while spending the rest of the traits offensively.

I would have an X% chance to fire a second arrow (using the auto attack stats/damage) per attack (so multiple chances w rapid fire). Would NOT work on barrage.

% chance could be 15%

I think this is a good suggestion. Perhaps it should be a chance to fire an arrow faster? (Sort of like quickness, but not quite) Somehow that feels realistic.

Thats over simplifying it tbh. Necro is not really terrible at any of those things but the other classes can provide a lot more of each in most cases. Its also the type of support, damage and control that matters and how useful that is compared to other types.

No matter how you look at it necro is bottom in pve. Ranger (debatable) and engi are also bottom tier classes but they are leagues above necro at the moment.

I agree. Especially that the other professions can provide more of these things at the same time, while still keeping the efficiency. And mostly, they’ll be doing so with much more ease.

I think that’s the fundamental problem with the Necro.

I might be wrong though.

@ Zenith: I’ll agree to disagree; It doesn’t seem like I was able to make you understand what I meant, and I don’t believe that a further discussion will lead us anywhere.

Edit: I noticed that you mention Conjure… Which build do you play? I love Evasive Arcana and everything that it brings to the table, and I actually barely ever play without it. Rest of the Traits is mostly spend in Air magic.

Perhaps we’re different views because we play different builds?

… Can’t we have a Challenge where we have to defeat a Aatxe Boss, where the reward of doing so would be the ability to change your Flesh Golem into an Aatxe?!

Yeah, I don’t know what you’re smoking. Mathematically, healing signet is the highest constant healing throughput ingame. If you’re having survival troubles on your warrior with a 18k hp base pool, a built in dodge on your greatsword attack, and a heal that actually passively outheals active cast heals with a cooldown, you’re doing something seriously wrong.

You just think ele survival is good because either your blind spam works on trash or you’re hiding behind a reflect wall. Once you are facing bosses whose hits you have to eventually tank if you don’t range, like Mossman or Archdiviner, you’ll actually know what survivability means.

Definitely not, but (i.e.) if your group wipes with you still on your feet, suddenly your survivability becomes a dire issue. Point is, the ability to survive can be estimated while playing through such harsh moments with different professions or builds

Have you ever played an Elementalist? (Or more importantly, @ 80 for a few dozen hours?) You’re making a brittle case.

As a avid roleplayer on the unofficial EU Piken Square RP server, I cannot overstate the massive use and importance of individualy equipable and dyeable town clothing. Mixing-and-matching between sets and loose items is fundamental.

Though I fully support most aspects of the upcoming changes, a “All or nothing” town clothing-to-tonic solution will truly grief me as a fan.

Please, ArenaNet devs~ doing this would severely diminish a otherwise amazing update on the customization system.

It’s essentially the same as before, it’s just more polished. How often do feel the need to switch outfits at this time? Isn’t it so that you make you make your mind up with a look, and you then stick with that look? I imagine that you preview the armor first before purchasing it. If you want multiple sets of armor (for cosmetics and/or for stats), working towards those is yet another goal in this MMO, and goals are important.

I don’t know about you, but when I figure out a new look, I’m excited to start working towards it and the upcoming Fractal run (i.e.) becomes all the merrier =)

In addition, it helps fuel resources to the very company providing these changes. I think that this should be considered a very reasonable and fair way to do that so we can get things like the Feature Pack.

No! Improve the Professions that already exists!

Btw, I want a 2H Greataxe on my Necro, a Hammer on my Engineer, and Maces on my Thief!

That could also belong into Sub Classes, to enable that way the basic Classes new weapons to use, that the Basic Classes weren’t able to use.

Example for Thief:

become a Rogue: Unlocks access to Offhand Sword, Dual Axes, Dual Maces
become an Infiltrator: Unlocks access to Longbows, Offhand Swords, Quarterstaffs
become a Saboteur: Unlocks access to Rifles, Offhand Sword, MH Mace and Torch
become a Strider: Unlocks Longbows, Whips and Torch, Offhand Sword, Quarterstaffs

That way could this Class progress with unlocking access to new already existing weapons as also complete new weapon types, like Quarterstaffs and Whips.

Ah, that’s such a cool idea!

ANd you’ll always be inferior to a warrior who does less work than you do on top of the fact that he’ll out damage you and be more durable. This isnt the ele forum though so we should drop this conversation, i’ve already said my thoughts on this in the ele forum numerous times. If we really want to debate this make a thread on the ele forum and i’ll continue this discussion with you there.

Good idea. We’ll agree to (seriously) disagree on this one.

On topic: I’ve brought up the idea a few times in other threads that if the Necromancers traits which gives him/her boons, heals, etc. shared these effects entirely to the partymembers, (which is a freaking huge buff) they would be on pair with other professions, wouldn’t they?

Examples which currently doesn’t affect allies:

  1. Furious Demise: Fury when entering DS (5s)
  2. Reapers Might: Life Blast grants Might
  3. Shrouded Removal: Lost 1 condition when entering DS
  4. Vampiric: Siphon Health whenever you hit a foe
  5. (Grand Master) Foot in the Grave: Gain Stability when entering DS (3s)

The last one would be, in theory very powerful; The Guardian can grant nearby allies Stability for 3s when using Virtue of Courage, which then has 75s CD, while DS has a maximum of 10s.
On the other hand, the Guardian Trait is a Master tier, and the Necros is a Grandmaster Tier! That’s a big difference, and you’re giving up 100% Critical Chance while in DS instead. In addition, it can always be configured with duration and internal CD.

Elementalist still have the worst survival and they are a light armor class. My main is a Warrior and i have a Necro, Ele and Ranger alt at 80. My Warrior is superior in PvE content.

As someone who plays all of these professions except the ranger (and really seeks to become as good as possible at them), the Elementalist have the best survivability, once you’ve spent a relatively vast amount of time actually learning the profession to its fullest.

The Warrior doesn’t even come close once you’re “fairly good” at the Elementalist. Problem is, that even that takes quite a lot of time.

Everyone thinks their class sucks, that’s why. While the necro isnt particularly good for PvE it’s not terrible and other classes have it worse (Elementalist). Necros can do fine in WvW, which you said; and while I dont play PvP I hear they’re not bad there.

Elementalist is not bad, they’re asked for Fire fields + ice bow & fgs to deal insane damage..

Thats the problem, ele is just utility, they’re not that good on their own. If other classes could get the FGS then nobody would want an ele. Damage is not all that makes a class. Something everyone could use to learn really.

Erm ele has everything. Top damage (not just with conjures), buffing, utility, support, versatility, active defense. Best solo class aswell.

Spoj is correct. However, if you haven’t bothered to actually learn everything about the Elementalist, you’ll find it difficult to perform. Once you have, though, you’ll have amazing Dps, amazing support and amazing survivability.
Again, it takes a lot of work to get to that point.

You could argue that I’m biased, but with each and every one of my 4 characters @ 80 (Ele, Warrior, Guardian, Engineer), I’ve really sought to become as good as possible on them (Though, I usually choose a ~meta build that I see fit and stick with that) and learned their tricks.

Can’t imagine how silly Elementalists will be with the Burning Speed evade, Frozen Burst CB, and the ability to freaking switch between builds!?!

I’d start this section with GW2’s official description, but the class in reality isn’t in the place that the development team would have it.

So my description will focus on where the class is at the moment.
The Necromancer is two things: First it’s an underdog class. Everything it does another class can do in an easier fashion, and often times better.

You play a Necro because you want to play a Necro.

Second, it’s a scrappy class. It can take hits and make mobs pay. It can mix it up in the middle of a swarm of enemies and come out on top—bruised and beaten, but victorious.

Third, the Necro is selfish. To play in the best, Necros offer very little to a party in the way of buffs, boons, or heals (healing could be debated, but other classes still do it better). If you play a Necro, your job is to tangle with death and leave your party to clean up the rest.

This is a very good description from a very seasoned Necromancer.
The Necro is always a tad worse than someone else; The extra health from DS is an exception though.

I.e. a Necro can actually deliver dps to seriously compete with the Top dps-professions, but they still fall flat since those still have better support.

  • Figure out all combos, interactions, semi-rotations, strengths, and actual cooldowns of/between all skills you’ve available
  • Learn how to execute all this very well

Result: You’re very hard to kill – much harder than any Warrior would be, i.e.

There is a very bight light @ the end of the tunnel.

I didn’t mean forging Eternity using Sunrise and Twilight skins. I meant what if you actually unlock the Sunrise and Twilight skins by equipping them and then later using the actual weapons to create Eternity… to sell off. Yes, you lose the legendary weapon stats but you are left with free Sunrise and Twilight skins + profit

Oh, that’s a twist to it! So you unlock the skins by equip, and then you mean that fusing them both together to Eternity would make Eternity BoE?

Sooo.. since I can unlock the precursors to legendaries can I do:

Make Sunrise > Unlock Skin
Make Twilight > Unlock Skin
Make Eternity > Item becomes bind on equip > Sell to TP = profit?

You can’t do that, as you need the whole Legendary to make it count as an actual “Twilight” or “Sunrise”. The skin of any of them wrapped around an exotic, Ascended etc. doesn’t count as the “real deal” in the Mystic Forge.

I still liked having armor be class specific, so no I hate this idea

Nothing has changed about this. Light, Medium, and Heavy armor stays exactly the same, as does the restrictions. If you mean the class-specific starter armor from the Character Creation (Mesmer Mask, Guardian Shoulders), you where already able to use them on other classes with the same armor type

… You’ll still be able to do exactly as much as you could before, and then a lot more!
You should be happy that you’ve been given the additional and really grand option to use your town clothes (which you mixed and matched so dearly) as actual combat armor as well.

Wrong. Town clothing is getting hit as a result.

Sorry about the mix-and-match. Converting things to be armor and combat compatible did come with some trade-offs.

Ah, do you mean that you can’t mix & match with pieces of full outfits? That’s a bit of a shame, but perhaps you can still mix & match if you keep them as Town Clothes, just like before?
Any way, it’s still a change that probably most Town Clothing-enthusiasts will love, though.

I wonder if Anet will include all the different professions’ starter head/mask skins in the locker. Because I love the ‘wraith mask’.

You can do this, just like you already could. Armor type remains as a restriction though

I can’t freely change my town clothes that I paid real money for. I literally paid for specific pieces to mix and match to look good. This is garbage.

… You’ll still be able to do exactly as much as you could before, and then a lot more!
You should be happy that you’ve been given the additional and really grand option to use your town clothes (which you mixed and matched so dearly) as actual combat armor as well.

Perhaps getting traits @ level 15-20 while keeping the same pace is a better alternative?
This would mean that you get to Grandmaster @ level 65-70, which quite frankly seems to agree with the game’s philosophy.

They have something for the dye system(free unidentified dye for multiple dyes across alts), what’s gonna be difficult though is all the possibilities of duplicate skins, t3’s, dungeon armors, karma bought items, badge bought items, legendary weapons etc.

What qualifies for compensation? What exactly will they compensate you with(and the numerous other people in the same situation)? How the kitten will they be able to do this compensation fairly for all(and their duplicate skins)?

Honestly I have no idea, what they could compensate, for those skins. Maybe refunds for the extra gem store skins? I don’t own duplicate bolts, or incinerators, but I would feel alittle cheated. I have bought 2 of the same skin for the same armor type.

Perhaps we should just be very happy about it? If you would have 2 Bolts i.e. you’ll still have 2 Bolts with Legendary stats and you’ll be able to use them on every Sword-wielding character you have (and perhaps in PvP aswell!)

It’s not a matter of loss, it’s a matter of gaining less than someone with 1 Bolt, but still more than everyone that doesn’t have a Legendary in the first place.

Arriving late to GW2, and primarily for PvP, I was surprised that there wasn’t a duel option. You could make it an option only in the mists if people will find it annoying in LA (I would probably). It would give life in Mists and decrease the trash talking since people could work out who sucks in a duel.

Dueling brings out a community that makes movies and promotes them. Views lead to interest, which leads to purchases of the game and gems.

I think that Dueling would be a great feature in the general world aswell, just not in the middle of the capitals where the majority of people hangs out.
I.e., in the Vigil keep, you would perhaps not be allowed to duel on the upper floor.

Ah, come on people! This would be great for the community, and a bliss to so many people who would find great enjoyment in it!

The only reasonable arguments I can find against it is annoying dueling-requests when you do not want to duel, and perhaps that it might be distracting in hub-centers, such as the old Traders Forum and the top of Vigil Keep.

Both can be easily prevented. The only thing remaining is people actually asking you to duel them in chat. I remember that this could be obnoxious in WoW, but when I went visiting my little brother just a couple of weeks ago, I got reminded about how obnoxious, immature and vile a vocal part of its playerbase as a whole is; It’s on a much different level than what you see in GW2 =)

Point is: If some people does this, it will be to a lot smaller extent than in WoW i.e. (where it was nothing more than a small irritation sometimes), and if someone one day would do this to you, just block them.

I absolutely think that the arguments against dueling is minuscule when compared to what we would gain from it!

Would be a terrible waste of time to implement.

There are a lot more dire and urgent thinks to fix.

In addition, in which hand a weapon is wielded in this game makes it possible for others to determinate the wielders build and, of course, their 5 first skills.

There are no left-handed people in Tyria.

I don’t care if ANet adds dueling, so long as it does not impinge on my gameplay. I don’t want to deal with hyperactive teenagers who chase me all over the map issuing challenges as a form of griefing.

At the very least, make dueling an opt-in with a “Willing/unwilling to duel” switch in settings.

I have no problem if people want to duel, as long as I can ignore them.

Good point. There should indeed be an option to disable Dueling requests. I think that would be entirely enough to avoid annoyance.
