Hello IceFlame,

I am the guild leader for a small 21 person guild with 15 regularly active players whose focus is on WvW. We play PVE for dungeons runs, temple clearing and world events to help our players earn some extra gold. We run on Ventrillo for guild only events and Teamspeak for our WvW so that we can coordinate with other guilds on the servers. We are an integrated part of our servers WvW community with alliances and communication with over 15 other guilds.

Our membership is made of my brother and I, four friends that have been gaming for over 20 years, a sister and brother and four couples plus a few folks who have joined us. We work as a team and support each other. We are on Devonas Rest and play mostly evenings NA prime time which may be a conflict for you.

Black Rose Legion is a small, quality focused guild. We have a long term goal of 25 members that are fully equipped, trained to their class and all styles of play and regular participants in the game. We currently have 21 members with peak activity of 17 and regular team play of 6-9.

Our members are treated like family. We help each other level, gear up and learn the ropes of the game. Our core membership includes myself and my brother along with five close friends that have been gaming together for over 20 years. We also have multiple couples who have found BRL to be a stable and well-knit team experience.

Our primary focus is on WvW. We currently have two members with commander sigils and have had a consistent involvement with Devonas Rest WvWvW play for over 6 months. Solum Contego on Devonas Rest is a competent and capable guild. They have a well integrated membership that treat each other with respect and support. I have seen excellent game play and leadership on the part of their commanders. Solum Contego is a guild with a long history of MMO play. They bring this heritage and expertise with them to GW2.

They play PVX with multiple solid teams in WvW. They are running guild missions successfully and maintain a positive experience for their members.

DDLG Is a large( over 200 members) and inclusive guild. They usually get around 25~40 members on a day. They are a friendly and highly social guild. They let everyone in on the fun, it’s not just the same group of people talking in guild chat! Just give them a try and you’ll see that you fit in!

Just completed a training session with TBE this past week. You will find a guild that builds you up and takes improving your game play seriously when you come to TBE.

We have some members of our dedicated WvW guilds that take the initiative to do repairs. I lead my guild or group to make at least one repair / resupply trip after a successful defense. You usually see other folks catch on when a team is repairing. A little experience in defense and our militia / new players will get the drift.

Yeah mostly I just Lerooooooy in and see how it turns out but without culling I can see if it is likely futile.

Communication and involvement are two way streets.

Put some glitter in those tears next time those plain tears are weak.

No problems just a long hard push for the weekend. I have a garden to tend to as well and spring is here so DR will have to miss me some soon.

I slept 12 hours in the last 72. The rest was in WvWvW. We always have something going on in game. Our guild roams in groups of 5 to 15 depending on how many are on and we hit camps, defend, flip towers, cut off reinforcements, zerg hunt, repair fortifications. All of those activities are great but the fun for me is reading the momentum of an enemy force. Can you maneuver and strike? Bait them to a choke point? Make a three server sandwich? Tough times are when you are out manned under sieged and the zombie horde keep rolling in but you fight through and come out on the other side like leaving the sauna.

Some details on our team -
daily active users- of 21 people in guild we have 8-12 on daily depending on day of the week. Our members consist of friends, families and new friends from game who live all across the Unites States, Canada, England, Germany and Australia.
We are an adult guild with no drama. It is a game where you come to play. If you choose to leave or do your own thing that’s on you but we expect communication. We don’t keep ghosts but we also don’t cut people that are busy with life.

Our expectation is that you show up, learn your class, how to fight with it and work to gear up. We have worked as a guild to gear up multiple folks so they were better able to contribute to the team. We also provide training for new folks that haven’t worked out the finer points of their class or the mechanics of WvW battle. We spend many hours running with our new members to help them level and integrate them into the team.

PVE / WvW oriented – We are mostly WvW. We have dungeon runs on weekends as people want to do them. We run a large force on Friday night for reset and then play whatever everyone wants during the week. This usually turns out to be WvW.

We have our own Ventrillo, Devonas Rest also has a server wide Teamspeak, we have established communications with access to five other primary guilds VOIP methods. We are a part of the server community.

Why WvW? For the victory! Defeat a computer? been doing that since space invaders was released. Build a team, their skills, coordination, equipment, the community and then achieve Victory! Hell yeah I want to see the people on my server roll over the opponent like a plague of locusts. I want to watch small and large teams maneuver across the map in an attempt at total conquest. I want to strive for that conquest against hot blooded cold hearted conniving crafty humans. I want my team to stand like a rock in a river and endure the onslaught of our opponents then roll over their remnants like a raging prairie fire and at the end of the day I want to know the person to the left and right and celebrate a hard earned and glorious victory in … a game.

Because I play to win and the fun is in playing hard.

There is a serious lack of organization available from the built in interface but it is easy to accomplish via voice communications. Set push to talk for a server wide net, command net and for a party channel. Use teamspeak with sub channels for needed divisions. Recruit and train 8 team leaders. Once those 8 are solid on siege, maneuver, communication and terrain build teams and fill them. Commander is in Server and command channels with different push to talk buttons configured. Team leaders are in COmmand channel and party channel with different PTT buttons configured. Build the teams as required for the fight you are fighting. Mix classes and party builds as needed. Hardest part so far has been recruiting enough folks. Got up to a dozen so running in two parties and one channel for server communications and one channel for party.

What is your current membership level / headcount and what made you seek leaders from outside your guild?

Guild Leaders responsibilities are you managing the guild or just facilitating discussions? Do you have authority or are you just there to take the blame / make suggestions?

BLUF- leaders responsibilities are shaped by goals and personal commitment

I am the leader of a small guild of 20 players with 15 active and a long term goal of 25 active fully equipped, well trained and experienced players.
In order to meet that goal we first need people, this dictates recruiting and retention as my first responsibility. I and some of my team direct recruit. We do interviews and make decisions on invitations. In order to build retention and therefore experience we work together as a guild in group and in ventrillo. We rotate our focus week to week to build a wide breadth of experience, tactics and to keep things fresh. This also allows for the opportunity to meet individual player goals. Not everyone likes WvW or dungeons, guild missions, generic PVE so by rotating focus we let everyone have time to work on a variety of goals with the majority of the guild supporting those activities.

Once a team is built and you are making progress discipline and reward can become an issue. Griefers, beggars, ghosts or outstanding leaders and contributors all have to be addressed. Whether you are rebuking, punishing or removing a member there is a judgment to be made and that can be an individual leader judgment or group decision based on your guilds rules / dynamics. In order to recognize or reward things that make the guild grow you have to be creative and look for opportunities to highlight those positive actions. Are you as the leader providing funds, equipment and written public recognition for the individual or team effort your star members provide or is that a group effort?

Funds, upgrades, influence management- Is there a plan or policy in place to discuss how this variety of assets are distributed, collected and used? Do you have a treasurer?

A guild could establish positions like HR, Operations, R&D, Historian, Judge, Recruiter, and Treasurer etc… You could build boards to handle those functions or you could put all of that work in yourself or that officer could execute those duties.
Managing a group of people, their time, game knowledge and game assets can be time consuming and really be work. If you want to be the guy /gal that shows up and plays and leaves and has no commitment to the betterment of the team that is fine as it is a game and people come into it to play rather than work. I would say at that point you are a member but not a leader. The OP mentioned being a officer in the organization and it sounded like some responsibilities were being delegated but of all the things mentioned above there will always be friction about focus, priorities and use of time. If you think about the work a guild leader puts in after looking at the above text then you would see why staying small has some advantages. That doesn’t prevent growth if you have a solid team that is willing to put the time in you could easily grow into the hundreds. It shifts the leaders focus from managing most things to working with his officers more. Maybe your leader didn’t find that a good fit?

I am building a team with our guild. If someone wants to be part of it rep and play. If not find another guild. We are not a 200 person guild. We have a core membership of frequent, dependable players who have fun and enjoy each others company. We have married couples, families and folks who have been friends for over decades. We have had folks join who were beggers, griefers, and those who refused to communicate. None of those work in a team environment and we asked them to leave or removed them. If you don’t want to rep the guild you belong to you shouldn’t be surprised people suspect your commitment to the guild. Why would someone want a guild member that was a ghost?

We are a 25 member guild with about 12 regularly active members. We are working to have 25 solid active members that we can depend on to support each other in all environments. We are all adults though some are younger. Our guild works as a team through Ventrillo. We have a core group of 6 IRL friends that have been playing games together for over 25 years. So our guild isn’t going away. We have played across multiple games and even have a group that is preparing to move to Elder Scrolls online when it betas / releases. We have been part of alliances on our server and have good relations with the commanders of multiple guilds of all sizes. We are an active part of the community. Leader or follower there are some sound principles here that deal with both the game and human dynamics. Simple things like avoid the choke points or controlling terrain with AOE are obvious until someone loses focus and moves into them because you weren’t leading or they were not following. Some of what is listed above seems more like SOP then leaders skill sets. If you execute your tactics by battle drill (all the always comments) then they belong in a TAC SOP.

DR Naked Karma run in SBI borderland was a blast. Thanks DDLG for the motivating Naked Zerg on zerg action against SBI. I haven’t done that for months.
