Well, I believe that anyone who plays PvP is part of the PvP community. I don’t think you can rule out people who also play PvE.

However, it is fair to say that in your experience, people who also play PvE tend to be more toxic.

They are though.

PvErs often like to cite how toxic the pvp community is. Yet, PvPers who have experience tend to be silent, unless they are attempting to get a rise out of people. A lot of people let their playing speak for them.

Ever seen someone link their first legendary in map chat? In happiness and celebration at how hard they worked? Only to see some other player or two link a bag of legendaries to diminish any sense of achievement. PvErs do this, not PvPers.

Ever seen people kicked for running a Runeset that isn’t meta even though they are running full zerker and have done a dungeon thousands of times? PvErs do this, not PvPers.

Ever seen players bug out an NPC on purpose to troll others? Such as Rox’s dialogue during the first week of the Tequatl revamp where people would die on purpose near her so Rox would cut any dialogue with people trying to get achievements/quest progression from her because she would immediately stop and rez said people. They would keep running over exploding corpses repeatedly doing this. PvErs were responsible, not PvPers.

Only a few examples among many. Sure, PvPers can be verbally harsher with their comments, but PvErs have just as much malice and practice it in different forms by actually hindering others in their game experience.

Since the beginning of the game 991 Days ago, I have met and made far nicer and more numerous friends in SPvP than PvE, and I am sure I am not the only one. So this tired and stupid stereotype that only PvPers are toxic needs to stop. Every single game mode has rotten people.

WvW tier 1 communities can be the worst by far though. I used to be on Tarnished Coast till a few months back, and honestly? Never have I seen people send in spies, break apart guilds and just go out of their way to ruin people’s play time in a video game than tryhards in WvW. (This also applies to Blackgate and Jade Quarry FYI, Blackgate being the most horrid of the three.)

I play on TC, and honestly have never seen that. The only feeders you get are really in Edge of the Mists to feed bag farming teams.

As far as trolls in pve, I’ve yet to be kicked from anything pve and I tend to run either knight’s or Clerics and rarely run beserker. I’ve had more hard times in spvp then anything else in this game. That however is caused by ANET’s immensely kittenty matchmaking. The reality of the matter is SPvP is the least popular section of the entire game really. It’s matchmaking and balance is horrid that it’s driven off most people from it. New players do one or two matches in hotjoin and get driven off by the sheer trolls that is hotjoin.

You want to compare who has worse players compare to hotjoin, it’s 4/5 trolls on any given team. It’s horrible, and don’t defend it by saying crap like well its’ hotjoin it’s supposed to be that way. Or It’s for practice of course you’ll get trolls. Hotjoin is crap and possibly the largest source of immature toxic people in the game.

This is the exact point though ,our experiences differ completely. In fact the people I have met in hotjoin have been hilarious and fairly cool once you get to know them. PvE has left a hugely stale taste in my mouth partially due to its players.

It really can go either way.

And the TC thing you have to of been on the inside to know. I never really took a dedicated investment into the whole ‘politics’ of it, but I have been there and have friends who have had huge swathes of influence+secrets on this. It really is ridiculous how toxic such a thing is for a kitten videogame.

Why do you want to be others?

PistolWhip.2697

But if everyone wants everything what will the point of classes be? I suppose this just goes hand in hand with how I feel professions/classes should be a far higher defining factor in a person’s experience.

I started playing GW1 about 3 months after it’s launch and one of the things that was important there thematically was the class you picked. I enjoyed that aspect, and felt like it gave each profession an identity. As an assassin for example there really was lore references among characters asking how far your ethics went on contract killing. Don’t get me started on Mesmer magic and Necromancy controversies.

I have always felt GW2 lacks a severe case of profession identity. In mechanics it is somewhat present, but in the environment and atmosphere? I have never felt it, and I would have loved it to be far more of an identity defining factor as a character than one’s race. It would show what profession you picked based on the type of person you are. We don’t even get much background lore on them.

Why is this relevant? Well, I suppose this opinion is why I am staunchly against any homogenization of class themes and mechanics. So this is why it has irked me, but it has been interesting to see these responses, truly.

Batrle of Kyhlo, I love how it is a little maze-like. I just mean all the buildings and and path ways make it have a lot of density for such a small map. (It could be because I am playing thief now though, and I love abusing all the LoS on this map without much open field.)

I feel we need more dense maps as opposed to big ones. Temple of the Silent Storm is another good example of this.

Those were the days my friend. I used to get so many compliments in whispers when I won fights years back because Warrior was so underrated. The fan mail was amazing and encouraging to continue mastering the class, and even if I lost people would call me brave for running warrior when no one else would.

Sure it was unviable, and baby tier, but honestly? I enjoyed coming out on top despite it’s shortcomings, for the recognition.

Lol indeed, i still remember people saying stuff like “i admire your dedication towards warrior” in Qs

unrelated me and my buddy used to shout “Colin!!!” whenever we didn’t like something about the game or found a bug (back around launch)

I think it’ll be called the Asurasdonthavefivefingershunter

or realistically Banshee/Wraith

Maybe, if Voyeur is too complex in concept. I still think it is a far more likely candidate than those two though.

Especially since the GS has eyes.

It’s never a waste of time discussing something like stats. If people didn’t discuss game issues then they would never get any feed-back. What they do with that feed-back is another matter.

Maybe you would like to discuss your cat, well if you have one.

The biggest point that anet has to consider is the backlash from players who crafted it. Be it from the amount of gold they chucked at it, to the massive amount of time. If you look at the current thread about traits, i can tell you this would be way way worse. if they do this, i know many many people who would leave the game, not because the stats matter(lets face it, i wish our armor was still like GW1 armor), but because they lost something they put so much time in to get. Much like if ANET decided to just pull the Obsidian armor out of GW1, how would you have felt after putting in so much time for something?

What if they redesigned them, so that they looked a lot better with better effects?

After all some of those with them say the stats are not important.

That is the point though isn’kitten Stats aren’t the main issue, it is time+effort invested. Compensation in any form would make this far more agreeable for many, but there needs to also be a functionality to it.

The convenience of being able to change stats like a Legendary Weapon when equip would be an amazing feature that would make many people see Ascended armor as an End game goal without being required to do so if you don’t mind swapping armor sets.

In fact, I believe with the introduction of Legendary Armor highly possible at some point, perhaps Ascended pieces can be the equivalent of a precursor for said appearance and effects of a Leggy Armor set.

Think about it, the stat gap is closed, and there is a very real benefit to having ascended armor WITHOUT putting Exotic players at a disadvantage in actual gameplay. Just quality of life.

Of course there will always be back lash, but compensation in the form above or any other substantial way will placate and make any change easier to stomach for many I’d imagine.

having ascended act as a kind of precursor would be an amazing idea actually, and help newer players actually notice it would be something special when they did happen to drop one, wouldn’t be surprised if the amount of precursors that been sold or salvages or similar by newer players would be pretty high over the course of the games life simply because they didn’t know any better, and should be pretty simply to up the current precursors to ascended status to make it even for it all

I agree! What do you think of saving Runes+Stat select? I don’t think it is unfair on Exotic’s in actual gameplay, it is just so much more convenient that Ascended seems attractive to any gamer who’d like it a bit easier on his/her inventory and Quality of life.

See my own edit, edited in a response to that before i saw your next post :P

Of course there will always be back lash, but compensation in the form above or any other substantial way will placate and make any change easier to stomach for many I’d imagine.

EDIT: I have long thought that Ascended armor if stat gap was closed should offer QoL over anything. And perhaps another good feature would be to save Runes. Think about this, you buy a set of Runes of The Pack, and equip your ascended armor. You decide later you’d want alternate Runes for a specific task, sadly you can’t replace your ascended armor’s runeset or it is a big waste of money seeing as they go for 6g or round abouts a piece? You can’t just magic up another set of ascended either, so you’re forced to carry some exotic set which cost a bit of gold but a lot of room a also.

Now imagine if, the first time you imbued a Rune into an Ascended piece of armor, it saved said Rune so you could select it at any occasion much like the Stats for a legendary. You could buy Runes knowing your investment was safe even if you weren’t sure of it over your previous Rune set. I also don’t believe this would negatively impact the Rune market, as you’d still need to buy it initially, and some Runes are ridiculously priced anyway. While some are dirt cheap.

Then again I even advocate making it so you only need one Rune for a whole set of armor much like PvP purely because mixing and matching is so gimping now that I’d rather only have to spent money on one. BUT that is another topic for another time to discuss.

Why do you want to be others?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

PistolWhip.2697

I can honestly say that I do not want stealth for my Necros.

I would like to have access to better stability, some healing for my main health bar while in DS, and perhaps my utilities while in DS.

If I can’t have access to those things, then some leaps, gap closers, or charges would be appreciated. I don’t want all things under the sun, moon, and stars. A few would be greatly appreciated.

I would also appreciate some skill cast times to be adjusted. When you play other classes and then play a Necro you can see a huge difference in skill activation and interrupts along with large misses because the enemy has moved on and stopped for a quick coffee before your skill has been cast.

Getting hit is part of the game but with DS you end up frozen in time against real enemies, unable to heal.

This is not about being like another class, it is about having an equal opportunity in a fight as the enemy. Necros have some strengths and some very good tools in certain fights, but there are whole areas of this game that they are considered worthless compared to others.

All classes should be desired in all aspects of this game in some way, shape, or form. This is a tough challenge, but it is required nonetheless.

That is more than reasonable though, and I can see why. Fixing already existent mechanics to bring classes to par should be the basis of every balance decision.

I am more so curious on those that reject a base philosophy behind a class after picking it.

Honestly this thread has been very informative, and despite my lack of replies I am reading all responses and feel enlightened to know why people have such a desire for their class. I appreciate all the feedback.

Got one of every class and two (male&female) of every race except Asura.
Though I very well understand the “avatar” syndrome.
My first and main is human and I regard it as my avatar in Tyria.

But the others are not, that´s kinda the point of RPGs for me. Trying out different roles and what the game offers in “style & aesthetics”.

Have we really managed to narrow this down to a type of condition? I figure it just amounts to saying “You’re a boring person” but if we have, is there a cure for it?

Yes because one play style is wrong to the point of needing a cure, when on the other thread roleplaying as the opposite gender or a oversized cat, rabbit thing, oath or plant is okay.

You know I don’t know why you insist on wearing a skirt when your double standard is showing.

And this is everywhere. It is when classes ask for what other’s have that go into in depth mechanics. Like asking for an elite spec for ranger without pets. If you chose playing ranger, you chose to have a pet, that is it’s defining thing. If you dislike the pet’s AI (understandable) or as a mechanic, then play one of the other 7 classes?

If you look out for it, you will see it almost every day in game, and I must know why.

Now there is this trend I have seen in every class’ community that has irked me for a while and still does.

I sincerely want to ask, why do some people pick a class then demand another classes base philosophy or mechanic?

Balance is entirely different, and it is important to balance for a competitive and diverse atmosphere.

But I mean base mechanics? As just one example, and there are many others on any class, Why is a Necro asking for stealth? And wanting not to absorb hits? (Just saw this.)

Why do some thieves ask for attrition? Why do ‘etc’…

If you want those things why can’t you just re-roll the class who’s mechanics you’d enjoy way more in question? I.E. the said Necro above roll Thief or Mesmer, and vice versa, in any scenario for any class…

People honestly act like they are locked into one character forever in this game. New play styles, great! I’m all for it. Changing complete base mechanics to mimick others? What is the point? Please, explain this to me.

What do you propose those who have worked on, whether enjoying it or not, making ascended armor in full for more than a few characters to one character get if such a change was implemented?

Surely you don’t suggest they get nothing in return for their efforts, otherwise be prepared for an outcry from a fair share of people. Imagine losing your decorated possessions because someone thought it was too hard or time consuming for them to get themselves so no one should have it.

Even as a PvP player I think this is ridiculous. Especially because it is now. Ascended armor has been in the game for long enough now that there is no reason to prod it apart from improving the functionality of it and armor in general now that traitlines will lose their stat bonus.

I honestly doubt Anet want to rouse the calm that has set in by taking away something from players some of which have made more effort than they ever have on other games for.

For reference I have 6-7 pieces of Ascended armor total on my account across 12 characters. I think there are far more unfair things that need addressing, (RNG drops, Precursor market manipulation, and market manipulation in general etc). So for TDLR’s sake, I disagree, sorry OP.

You seem very defensive.

You said “stat increases are quite literally meaningless from exotic to ascended,” and I said if they are meaningless why not make them the same?

Then you protested. The OBVIOUS corollary is that you don’t really think they are meaningless.

Yes?

Edit: Logic hurts, I know. I am just sick of people saying that there is no practical gear stat difference, while at the same time defending for their life the stat difference. Hypocrisy comes to mind.

The stat difference withholding trinkets which are very accessible is small. People aren’t defending the stat difference, they are defending the time and effort spent. When you’re willing to give up something you worked hard for such as a precursor you grinded money for as a show of solidarity for this Ascended armor change, then we’ll listen to you.

It shouldn’t matter right? It is only exotic stats. It’s not like the assigned value to an item because of the effort to obtain is a thing anywhere in any walk of life or anything.

The dragonhunter art teaser had dragon gauntlets in it. So either those gauntlets or the hood are our specialization armor pieces. Can probably speculate a little off of that.

I believe it’s the sword.

But kitten , I wish art had Charr in it. Would look 100% better. And we can’t see anything bout ears and greatsword.

Fairly sure every class is the same race as their cover picture for the initial professions art.

This means the Engineer will be charr.

Charr will still be able to get the hoodie, though.

Any light armor will.

I coudl definitely see it. At first reading of the Defiance thing I thought it was guardian or warrior, but as the weeks have gone by I have found necromancer a much more likely candidate.

It would just fit so well thematically with the Necro face tank philosophy. Anet has kept a lot of the active style defenses away from necro with the idea that they are meant to tank with their DS and other mechanics. Defiance would fit perfectly with this.

Why do you play female characters as a guy?

No idea. But I can tell you my daughter plays a man toon so she can avoid all the whispers from desperate dudes . . . if that tells you anything.

As a woman, who plays only female characters.

“whispers from desperate dudes”
really isn’t that common, here anyway, in fact, I’ve not gotten single flirty whisper in GW2

more likely to get this
“you a girl? really? nah really? you telling the truth?”

That is all about to change. :^)

Can we stop giving the reason that it is because some people like virtually eye-gawking their characters? I mean I know some of you do, and I get that. But it is literally 90% of this thread now, I’d rather it was a given at this point and let people with more interesting reasons share them with us.

I think everything I don’t play is also faceroll and i outplay them all with my super fair gimmicks of any kind.

Best designed class:

My class (Only because it is very balanced.)

Worst:

My class (Only because it should be buffed and fixed.)

One thing I can’t quite understand is how some can’t identify with a character that isn’t the same sex as them irl. It seems strange to me that it’d create such a divide. Personally when I make a character I like to envision them with a part of my own persona, whichever sex they are.

I am fairly sure it is the opposite for some of us. I’d find it strange if it didn’t create a divide, after all we will never have the same view point as a whole. As someone who sees a character if human as a representative for oneself, I think it is all down to how you enjoy stories being told. From first person, or from third person with many view points.

Different strokes for different folks.

MFoy hit the nail on the head I think. Some people enjoy seeing their character as an extension of themselves to the point a likeness forms, others see it as a companion to adventure with.

I certainly like looking at cute female characters, but I can’t play one myself. In order for me to commit time to playing a character I need to care about it. And in order to care, I have to connect.

I can’t connect with a female avatar. I enjoy the eye candy but I can’t shake the “this isn’t me” feeling. I would sooner play a male asura or charr (and I don’t like either race much) than a female.

Right there with you buddy. There is nothing I enjoy more than a shapely rear on a lady with engorged posterior dimensions.

As a butt man, it is my favourite. As a player, I just can’t identify with female characters.

The only characters of mine that are female are my mesmers and my elementalist.

I just can not bring myself to make a male character whose special ability happens to be shattering clones into purple/pink butterflies.

Elementalist is pretty much the same thing… but for a different reason.

Male light armor classes have a real issue with their wardrobe at the moment. Everything is a skirt or a dress…. and since it took so long to get my male Necromancer to look like he wasn’t a crossdresser…. I figured I’d just make the elementalist a female.

So that makes a total of three female characters out of the 11 on my roster.

I also laugh at the responses about the appeal of looking at a girl character while you are playing.

Did you also play with barbies instead of GI joes growing up?

I think that being kitten or cool on your male characters is much more fun than playing a female toon.

All it takes is creativity. There are a lot of combo’s male light armors can pull off, and I have many I can show you that look anything but feminine. Just takes time.

Depends on the race really. MMO’s tend to make male models extremely buff/barrel chested and I hate the look. If I’m playing an agile character or a mage archetype I don’t want to look like I can bench press a car.

Thankfully GW2 has a sylvari/asura male models that are lithe, any other race is female for me though.

Humans have many skinny body types… The only one missing really is a fully fat body type.

  • more aesthetic in several ways than males: they are more elegant and their animations are kitten

See I always read this but surely it is on a case by case subjective basis. Most agile classes are fine but females humans look really stupid with greatsword animations on Warrior or Guardian. Like they look like they are about to topple over at any moment with how they hold it, and don’t get me started on attacks.

You’re also not a dragon slaying hero in real life, so I don’t see why your ingame sex needs to match out real sex. It’s an rpg for a reason, you can play the role of any character the game lets you create.

Personally my characters are 50 50 male and female. I like to alternate.

Speak for yourself. As the hero of shaemoor I demand to be recognized as such in all and every event I attend in my IRL.

Let’s turn it around

Why is it expected that males should/would play males and females females? Why is this the accepted norm, and why does it usually end in a question about sexual orientation if the opposite happens?

I think that’s because the assumption, when given a choice in an avatar (unlike say Diablo II), that the player will see the avatar as a projection of themselves but probably idealized (thinner, stronger, taller, prettier … with hair). And that might be true if RPing was a priority. But since most people don’t actually RP as their avatar it really isn’t a RP breaking issue (if using voice chat).

If you played games for as long as some of us, we’ve played female characters since we didn’t have much of a choice. Samus, Laura Croft, the sorceress in Diablo II, the gender of the avatar you are “driving” is immaterial. So when given a choice is your avatar’s gender any different than skin or hair color. It’s just one of the few choices you have to customize your avatar’s look (I came from CoH so yes, few choices).

Is choosing race any odder than gender? Are you a furry because you like Charr? What about skin tone or hair color? Have you always secretly wanted to be blond or a redhead?

Go CoH! I4 through sunset, Virtue.

Interesting that you bring up races as I was having a discussion recently along those lines. Discusee was asserting that they didn’t understand how anyone could ‘get into’ a character of a different gender since males and females were so different from each other. My position was that the variety of races differed far more from being a human in our real world than being a different gender would.

For instance, if I chose to play a female asura, the bulk of the difference between me and that character is that the character is asura(and that they exist in a completely different world/culture) and I am human, with gender being a secondary difference. I have more in common with my girlfriend then I do with even a male human in Tyria.

CoH all the way :P

For me, the way I played CoH, the different heroes and villains I created weren’t “me” (heck no!) but instead were a “roster”. Just like Marvel or DC has a roster of heroes that do various actions and interactions with other characters, my CoH roster had different heroes and villains, some being arch-nemesis of someone in my roster. Now, if Marvel or DC had only male characters just because most of the creators are males, there would be a lack of variety and interaction.

So in GW2, my characters are a roster each having a part to play in the overall story laid out by GW2 (like my Asura Ele is the one who was the 2nd in command of the Pact while my Warrior wasn’t even at the battle of Clawr Island). And if my roster was only males, that’s like writing a story with only male characters! I’d never do such a thing!

I tend to make human characters a selfie of me ingame. So I guess I am on the complete opposite spectrum and if I had a chance would project exactly me in every aspect into Tyria. I don’t really have an idealized version, I have always just imagined myself as I am in any given scenario. This is also why I never make female characters, because I am a male.

I guess we’re a coin of two extremes.

I only trash talk if I have beaten them. There is no point in flaming or trash talking if you don’t win. Adding insult to injury is the point of it all. Why would someone add insult to another’s victory I will never find out?

I do think some trash talk is healthy tbh. It is just a natural side effect of competition.

TDLR PvP is half the battle, map/say chat is the other half.

I very strongly disagree with your attitude. No one should ever trash talk another player, regardless of whether they win or lose. This isn’t League of Legends, GW2 has always had a generally friendly community, and I would like it to stay that way. There is no need to create an atmosphere of toxicity.

I think you’re missing out. Video games are meant to be a playground for the silly.

+Trash talk can be part of a friendly healthy competition. It is only when you take things too seriously does the fun be replaced by malice. Kanye West wouldn’t be half as entertaining if he was humble.

Granted it may not be everyone’s thing lorewise…

For some neither is a bow that shoots unicorns, bunny ears, random black wings etc.. etc..

I mean there are many things that just don’t make sense in Tyria, headphones would just be another to add to the list. Though I still think it is realistic enough they would invent make shift headphones to listen to bard’s songs or such, music is a thing everywhere!

On the subject of charr ears ,they would probably fit the same way earmuffs do.
