Step 2: Use spectral walk and run towards a cliff.
Step 3: Recall right before or soon after falling.
Step 4: Staff 5 those smart enough to stop before the edge. Collect the loot bags.

you dont need unyielding blast in pvp. vital persistence is worlds better for dps uptime. if you want a minion build you need either necromantic corruption or death nova. sigils of energy help.

The idea isn’t to sit in ds but rather use it to have stability as much as possible. You only sit in ds when all your minions are on cd.

Hmm.. i am wondering why you wouldn’t take exploding minions or leeching minions or condiclear minions just to gain stability.

I guess its just a prefered style of play.

This build does have leeching minions. It also has the advantage of not getting ping ponged for extended periods of time and not being completely dependent on minions for survival. But, I agree, this build isn’t my playstyle. I found my overall survivability went down because the playstyle was very different from what I was used to. I have a hard time playing around a rotation of skills rather than reacting to my opponents actions. I wanted some feedback about this build to improve my ability of using it or building it better (or just switching back to a regular minion build).

To get some much needed stability for pvp, I decided to rebuild. I went 0/0/20/20/30 with minion recharge, minion health, transfusion, minion siphon, piercing blast, close to death and (of course) the foot in the grave trait. I also switched to Lyssa runes and have soldiers gear. I run a full minion bar minus bone fiend.
Thoughts?

Are there skills that allow them to negate the revealed debuff and stealth anyway? 3 seconds is time enough to lock target and pull of an attack. The thieves I’m talking about are often stealthed before you can even target them with tab with no other targets around.

I’ve heard that thieves had a 3 second revealed debuff when they come out of stealth but, in wvw, I’ve seen a few that come out of stealth, attack and restealth as soon as I get a lock on them (1 second at most). Can anyone explain this?

I really believe Anet does not care about (and does not play) the Elementalist.

I lolled at this bold post. Replace “Elementalist” with “Necromancer” and I’ve seen it on the necro forum for the same trait.

Oh yeh, I forgot… Chill/Cripple/etc still auto-transfer from your minions too you, even if they out of Line of Sight.

Are you sure you didn’t mean that slowing effects on you also affect your minions? This is especially noticeable when carrying the orb in spirit watch.

Spectral grasp procs lf if it hits the target but, if it misses, then it doesn’t. All other spectral skills proc lf on use while traited even if it has no one targeted. I use traited spectral skills to give me some starter lf when I plan to get into a fight and it’s annoying that spectral grasp doesn’t do this. I prefer spectral grasp being on my bar even though it misses a lot. I switch it out with spectral wall when I plan to be running away.

I disagree about removing bone fiends unblockable attack. I think shadow fiend should have a true teleport so at least 1 of your minions are attacking your target in certain situations (2 spamming thieves anyone?). Of course this could get your minion stuck on a place there is no pathing off of….

So, spectral walk doesn’t really have a range, right? So, could you pop SW in Wvw or Pve, hop into a mesmers portal, then after it closes you hit spectral recall and you’d be back to where you were at before you went thru the portal, right?

You can pop spectral walk, waypoint across the map, and click it again to go back to where you started. As long as you don’t change maps, the range is unlimited.

Assuming you can load fast enough.

How Do You Deal with Lupi?

How do you manage to fight lupi with minions? Lupi spawns bugs off of your minions in phase 1, insta kills them in phase 2 and absorbs life off of them in phase 3. The bone minions and jagged horrors don’t know whether to attack him or not, and if your groups are like mine, we kite him all across the battlefield meaning he’ll eventually get to your flesh wurm. To survive, I usually try to avoid the aoes by moving around, saving my dodges for when he steps to me. I usually switch all my utility slots to other untraited skills. If he bubbles me, I pop ds to survive. If he bubbles me again, I’ll likely be downed but I suspect that I could survive if I’m careful.

I had this problem too. I would enter the room and be immediately put back outside. To get back in, you need to get some distance from the portal and then go towards it and try again.

I don’t know where else to put this, so… My minions get slowed whenever I get crippled/chilled even though they aren’t afflicted. This is especially annoying when I take an orb (Spirit Watch?) in pvp.

These two traits could really use a look into. IMO, they should roll Protection of the Horde into Flesh of the Master, Reanimator into Minion Master, make Greater Marks the Master minor trait (let’s face it, everyone wants marks) and add a new Adept Minor trait.

Actually, rolling the protection of the hordes and reanimator into existing minion traits sounds reasonable. Not too sure about the greater marks thing, though. Not that I’d argue if they did it. ;-)

Actually, in reference to minion healing, I was thinking the grandmaster trait in blood line should have an addendum: Minions can consume conditions to gain health. It would work like “Consume Conditions” but for your minions. This might allow them to soak up more conditions from you. I would consider this trait if this change happened. I currently run 20 in spite for 30% minion dmg increase so I’ll definitely take a hit in dps, but I think it would bring the condition steal trait on par.

Yes, Lich rune minion does proc death nova on death. Keep in mind that it actually states that it is a minion though. No others runes give you actual “minions”. Also, it doesn’t proc reanimator because I’ve seen a class other than necro use this rune in pvp. O.o

Axe 2 tracks when they stealth? I haven’t noticed that even though it’s my primary weapon. They seem to come off no worse for the wear when I try it.

I would also like to add that shadow fiend is good against stealth thieves. When they pop out of stealth, you use its ability before they restealth to track their position when it hits. You can hit that area with aoes and they will most likely fail their first attack out of stealth. Its long activation is a boon in this instance.

I am not surprised when my output decreases as I lose minions. Remember, he was ignoring my minions so I only lost the bone minions by exploding them. As for getting rid of the conditions, as I said, every time I did, he had cripple/chill/bind on me as soon as I removed them. He took all the dps I threw at him. He stood still many times taking the hits while attacking me with aoe attacks and had a rather impressive heal to boot.

I find that you get good condition removal OR great hp regen (if they hit) but not both. Maybe I’m not getting it but, when I tried having my minions remove my conditions, they dropped much faster leaving me vulnerable and weaker. I hear you’re a great MM. Would you mind showing us some pvp videos?

I do not recommend putting 30 into blood line to get the minions to take your conditions. I’ve found that this causes them to die very fast. As for MM being a face roll build, I am beaten often by good players. I faced a ranger the other day in wvw who I couldn’t beat. He appeared to be a signet build who could tank and put out lots of conditions. He would lock me in place with chill/cripple/bind and throw conditions and aoe while his pet worked on me. He ignored my minions so I was getting as full dps on him as you can expect to get on a ranger. I reset my bar to have consume conditions and well of power to remove the ball and chains but, once they were on cd, I was once again eating his full dps and taking on a lot of conditions. I run a 20/0/30/20/0 build with 30% minion dmg. Can anyone tell me what I could’ve done to beat him?

I prefer Axe/Warhorn. I find retaliation is a must. D/D didn’t improve my survivability at all. The movement lockdown was useless against so many people, due to skills or immunity, that I gave it up. The dagger 5 took so long to use that many of the buffs I wanted to remove timed out before the skill finally worked (often because of control effects). I was kited to death many times, unable to chase down my target to get it in range of auto attack. I’m thinking about giving Scepter/Warhorn a try, but for now I’m going to have to say A/W + Staff ftw.

Don’t forget that many minions will probably die to that aoe. Think of MMs as a burst/tank class. We are most powerful with all our minions out, but once they start dying off both dps and tanking ability start to drop off.

Aoe fear sounds good but many classes block it or are immune. Even so, as far as I can tell, we have one of the better set of downed skills among the classes.. Our first skill damages an opponent and heals us at same time. 3rd skill is an aoe condition damage. 2nd skill is often blocked or the opponent is immune, but when it works, it’s nice.

I’m personally not fond of Dark Path. For catching up to an opponent, the opponent outruns the attack. I’ve never hit an opponent that attempted to run away with this skill. No hit=no port. As for escaping, it has the same issue that Flesh Wurm has. That is the time it takes for the skill to complete, you’ve already run half that distance essentially reducing its effect to near uselessness. Having the Flesh Wurm down already does help, but putting it at a range that would allow for max port distance (anything else seems ineffective if you’re running away) also puts it out of battle. Also, those I would run from often catch me even when I do this. Even so, it’s something to think about. Keep the tricks coming. :-)

No, thankfully. Which is why cliffs were considered the necro’s only escape mechanism.

Still are if you have an unused Spectral Walk on your bar.

My first time using Spectral Walk was on a JP. I was testing to see if I had a way to “port” back if I fell. I used both Flesh Wurm and Spectral Walk, they both failed. It must’ve been a glitch on the Spectral Walk. Thanks for giving me a useful tool. I never knew of the DS fall ability either. I recently learned that if you use a skill that channels, such as Flesh Golems charge, it will hit a stealthed thief if you started it before the thief steathed (I can’t confirm that yet.) What other useful tricks might I employ? I run a MM build but can switch out skills for utility purposes such as the Spectral Walk gives and DS used to give.

I would like to be able to customize my cooks outfit a little more, specifically the tools. I want my tools to have a different quality and color. Metallic colors with highly polished reflective surfaces. Not sure if it’s in the color palate, but I’m sure you could put it in there.
