This is how 1 up 1 down plays out:

Weeks 1 (for example):
1v2v3, 3 loses
4v5v6, 5 comes 2nd
7v8v9, 8 wins

Therefore, tier 2 in week 2 will be 3v5v8.

A tier 1 vs a tier 3 server, almost certainly a blow-out and no fun for anybody. How is that better than the old system?

As for OP, sounds a bit too complicated and slow for my liking.

International vs Language Servers

Obviously this post is concerned with the EU ladder, and doesn’t really have any relevance to the NA ladder.

I was wondering how much difference it makes to server performance and the WvW experience being on, for example, a french-only server, compared to being on an international EU server. As of next matchup, there will only be 1 international server in the top 2 tiers, the rest being 2 french, 2 german, 1 spanish. It’s also noticeable that nearly all the dedicated language servers are in the top half of the ladder, while the bottom half has alot more international servers. Over the past month or two, all of the international servers in the top half of the ladder have been struggling, while the german servers in particular seem to be surging forward everywhere.

Does being on a dedicated language server provide a greater sense of community spirit, a sense of loyalty and duty to your fellow countrymen? Do the International servers have a greater difficulty in getting organised because of language/culture barriers? Generally the international servers mainly speak english, but there are usually a few guilds that can’t speak it, at least not well, and many players who can’t speak english at all.

Is this why we see a stronger “guild culture” on the international servers, like Piken, SFR, AG, Gandara, while the french/german servers have a stronger “server culture”, with everyone in the zone on TS and guilds not discouraging randoms from following and instead getting them involved? By the way, I’m not saying the language servers don’t have any good guilds, because they quite clearly do. However, I think it’s fair to say they have fewer WvW guilds.

Or is this just a misconception, a case of “grass is always greener on the other side”. I’ve always played on the same server, Gandara, and have no actual experience of playing on other servers, and my views are very much based on word-of-mouth and observing the enemy in our matchups. Would be interesting to hear from someone who has tried both international and dedicated language.

Would an “English-Only” server perfrom better than the “International” ones, would it have a stronger sense of community and identity? Or am I reading too much into it, and infact it would be no different at all?

I’m making no suggestions or complaints or accusations here, I was just wondering

And you’re referring to WvW as only being “blobvblob”, when infact most of the dedicated WvWers avoid blobs like the plague. Generally the most skilled group play you’ll see in WvW comes from groups around the 10-25 mark, not 70+. If you’re going to deliberately mis-represent my game mode as mindless-zerg-only, then I will deliberately mis-represent yours as 1v1-only, tyvm.

And I’m still utterly un-convinced that if you took the top 30 tPvPers and put them up against RG, that it would be anything other than a massacre.

If you’re looking for things as specific as signet/skill rotations
, you’re going to be disappointed. Unless you’re playing against a group that just stands still on one spot auto-attacking, you need builds and players who are flexible and can adapt to different and unexpected situations. Trying to stick rigidly to a plan devised hours or days in advance will get you killed.

As far as team composition goes, the current meta is to have 1 or 2 of each of the caster classes (ele, mes, necro) for their combo fields and utilities, and then stack all other players as heavy melee, often something like 70/30 guardian/warrior.

Ranking servers on WvW performance is neccesary to get fair WvW matchups.

Ranking servers on sPvP or PvE performance is not neccesary for anything other than stroking egos.

I’ve been disappointed in Gandara before, but for the first time I’m ashamed to be Gandaran.
EDIT: apparently this isn’t clear enough. I’m not from AM.

On our borders right now are 2 AM guild groups, [LNS] and [FAME], and hardly any randoms with them. They each have 20-30 players. They’re sticking tight to their group leaders, buffing up, charging with veils etc. Even saw LNS withdraw just now, let FAME engage us, then LNS came back to hit in the flank.

Meanwhile, Gandara has no real guild groups on the map, only a handful of SVSL forming the commander nucleus and a small team of 5-6 TDA, and all we have besides that is a mass of 40ish players milling around a commander, and the rest of the people on the map running around like headless chickens. And STILL people are calling out “AM blob at Faith”, and accusing them of having no skill.

I don’t particularly like Abaddons, and they definitely do bring some ridiculous blob play and cowardice at times. But right now we are in NO position to be complaining about skill and organisation. AM are playing how we like to tell ourselves that WE play, with organisation and skill over numbers. Quite frankly, whining from Gandara right now smacks of jealousy and self-denial.

/salute to LNS and FAME, and I’m sorry you’re taking so much flak for playing just the same as everyone else.

To be honest, Abaddons seem to have improved alot since last time we met. We encountered [FAME] and [ADAC] moving separately last night on Gandara BL, often accompanied by a following of randoms, but not always, which is a big step for AM. Not all on the same spot :o:o:o

While Abaddons don’t have any groups who can go toe to toe with any Gandara or FSP guilds in a fair fight, their randoms are so much better coordinated than ours that I can’t say they don’t deserve to be walking all over us. Last night several commanders at various times tried on our map to rally the pugs and gather them up, and yet the commander rarely had more than 20 people with him, despite the map being full and there being no other commanders or guild groups on the map (other than 10 Dius). There was a sea of players standing around aimlessly between Sunnyhill and Garrison, pointlessly auto-attacking garrison gate and killing freakin Moas, waiting around for someone else to get stuff done for them, and stubbonly refusing to read map-chat or get on TS to help the commander. When was the last time you saw any more than half-a-dozen players on our TS, other than guild groups? There’s a difference between not wanting to blob, and not doing anything useful whatsoever.

While it’s boring for our guilds to be constantly out-numbered 4:1, if Gandaran infantry can’t be bothered to get off their arses, meaning our 10-20 man guilds are trying to fight the entirety of AM server on their own, that’s hardly AM’s fault.

We gotta pick up our game Gandara. That doesn’t mean we have to blob up into 1 mega-zerg, but it does mean that players have to make an effort to make themselves useful, instead of standing around waiting for someone else to sort things out, or logging out and hoping it’ll all be better later.

The fact that the commander tag stirs up this much controversy is proof enough that it should be removed from the game.

No player has the right to tell another player what to do.

This attitude is entirely wrong. Most commanders don’t tag up because they want to tell other people what to do, they tag up because they don’t want their server to lose all their stuff simply because nobody could be bothered to tag up. And it’s a fact that, with no commander and no guild groups on a map, a servers performance significantly drops.

I know you’re your own special unique individual who can’t possibly have your freedom and creativity inhibited by someone else. You’re also not one of the people getting stuff done for the server. Following commander doesn’t make you a sheep, it makes you useful.

Honestly, the number of times I’ve had people say either to me or to other commanders:

what, you think you’re better than us? what gives you the right?

To which I say:

no, I don’t think I’m better, and I don’t think I have a right. But if I didn’t tag up, nobody else would, and we’d lose all our stuff on the map. So, your choice

That’s why I bought my tag, and that’s why I use it. Not because I think I’m awesome and that everyone should do what I say, but because I hate seeing my server fall apart when there’s no other commanders about.

Split servers into 3 “Teams”, competing in 3 separate ladders.

Eg. (my server), Gandara 1, Gandara 2, and Gandara 3.

Gandara 1 vs Abaddons 1 vs Millers 1 from 2am to 10am GMT

Gandara 2 vs Piken 2 vs AuguryRock 2 from 10am to 6pm GMT

Gandara 3 vs AuroraGlade 3 vs Riverside 3 from 6pm to 2am GMT

Each server “team” has its own rating in the rankings, and will have its matchups decided according to those ratings, independant of the other server teams. So it may turn out that Gandara 2 is very strong, and will end up facing other strong servers. While Gandara 1 is very weak, and gets put in the special-kids tier.

Seeing as I’m on Gandara, I can participate in all 3 of these matches if I so wish. Nobody will ever be prevented from playing.
However, if I can only realistically play during one of those matches, I can comfortably spend my time there and then log off knowing that the enemy won’t have taken a 50k point lead overnight.

This would also go a long way to reducing stale matchups against the same servers.

The trouble is that it’s subjective. 30 people would be considered a large zerg on the lower tiers, while in the higher tiers that might only be a small guild group.

Anyone who has ever tried to command pugs/randoms (which is completely different to commanding a guild), particularly if they aren’t all on Teamspeak, will tell you that is quite literally impossible to get people to follow instructions, at least enough of them with the level of coordination to put serious plans like that into effect. Soldiers have to obey orders, players don’t. Many players don’t even speak the same language.

You can watch all the history documentaries you want, you can read all the Sun Tzu, Caesar and Bonaparte you like. It is all 100% worthless in a video-game.

A good commander doesn’t need to know about flanks and pincers and traps. A good commander DOES need to know how to keep the interest and morale of his players up, or else they either ignore him or log out. That means good communication, not loosing your temper, keep providing goals that are achievable and rewarding. Knowing how Napoleon won Austerlitz is worth sweet eff all compared to that.

But you just keep on being an armchair general. You don’t need to bother getting a tag and giving it a go, you already know you’re better than all the rest.

PS. I’m not saying there aren’t any useless commanders out there, because there absolutely are. But anyone bemoaning the lack of feints or pincers or traps from commanders, quite frankly, doesn’t have a clue what they’re talking about.

Guild Claiming was clearly designed for a much slower, more static game, where it would be possible for a single guild, if playing well, to hold a tower for several hours while other stuff is going on elsewhere in the world. Like a grand campaign, with front-lines, and long protracted seiges, beleagured towers needing to be relieved by allied forces, daring groups opening up or raiding supply lines. “Guild X will bunker in this tower and hold the east flank while Guild Y holds the centre and Guild Z raids the west flank”. That’s what they had in mind.

But that’s not how the game works. What we have is ZvZ, a grand game of musical objectives where towers flip ever 10 minutes and the winner is the team who can carry the most supply in order to PvD the fastest. Guild Claiming just doesn’t make sense in this game mode.

Gandara had the same problem about 3 months ago, we were against Augury Rock and Arborstone, while Arb were on their plummit from T1 to T9, so it was basically 1v1 with Augury. Augury were slightly better than us, but the score difference was massive, because Augury could hold Arbs stuff as well as their own and sometimes ours as well. And without the pressure of a 3rd server to create a natural 2v1, they were able to push us pretty hard too.

Must say, I didn’t enjoy that week, so sympathies to FSP. Anyone who’s been around the block in WvW knows that these scores aren’t really a fair reflection on you.

As for Arborstone, really love the attitude of you guys, don’t give up

No, infact I think the opposite is true. With free transfers, you’d see massive movements of people between servers on reset nights when one server finds out that they’re going to be in a tough match-up for the next week. With paid transfers people slowly trickle away from a sinking ship. With free transfers, you’d see virtual stampedes, rendering the entire server rating system completely pointless.

Transfers don’t create stability and balance, they destroy it.

Why are Zergs more Effective?

Nobody is saying that a team of 20 should be able to routinely beat a team of 60 (unless the 60 seriously suck).

However, 3 groups of 20 (60 total) properly co-ordinating with each other should, in theory, be able to run circles around a single group of 60. This is how everyone I’ve ever spoken to would like the game to be. Because the groups of 20 are using better co-ordination, flanking, fake attacks, delays and distractions, etc. they are playing in what most people would consider a more clever, skillfull and interesting way.

The problem is that this isn’t infact the case. The maps are so small that a single group of 60 can defeat one group of 20 at one end of the map, and less than 2 minutes later be at the other end of the map fighting another group. Not only that, a group of 60 can melt through keeps so fast that 3 groups of 20 don’t have any chance of grouping up together to counter the 60-blob, even if the alarm is called as soon as the threat is seen.

This is why people have a problem with zergs, it takes a lot of the interest out of the game by making some of the more refined tactics and gameplay pointless.

Grouping up is human nature though, so I don’t think you can ever really prevent people from doing it. But what could be done is to stop it being quite so effective, by reducing the ability of zergs to move rapidly from one side of the map to the other (waypoints? perma-swiftness?), and reducing their ability to melt through keep defences in under a minute (cap on damage-per-second to gates?).

PS. I don’t think raising or removing AoE cap would do anything to break up zergs. It would just make fights be decided faster. Sure your group of 20 would do more to their 60, but their 60 will also do more damage to you. No gain.

lol, I’ve noticed this as well, more than once. Group of 6-8 of us, being chased from the north camp all the way down to the lake by groups of 50+

Just thinking the whole time: “really guys? really? are they actually still following us?”

Point remains; I’ve yet to see any AM engage a fight without at least 3:1 advantage. Any less and they run. We’re sometimes guilty on Gandara of getting frustrated with RS for hugging their keeps too much, but at least they’ll have a try at a proper fight from time to time.

Great fights with RS tonight in AM borders with [ZORN], [IF] and [MSNG], especially around the south towers and northeast camp. It was quite a shock to find RS roaming out in the open, and you made us work hard! Has given me some optimism that this match-up might not be totally boring, so thank you

AM on the other hand…… one single blob rolling around the map and no other groups to be seen. And then when you realise that even your blob can’t handle dius and XxX together, you glitch in to Bay. Twice. Then again, shouldn’t complain; a stack of badges from you tonight Glitching into a Lords room won’t stop you sucking in a fight :P I kid, I hope that comes across.

If they make WvW Ascended not require laurels, you’ll just get a flood of PvErs coming in to get Ascended, clogging up maps with badge-farming-zerker-nubs.

I don’t particularly like laurels either, it just shows a lack of thought and design on their part that they have to put a 1-per-month cap on ascended items. But if that cap exists in PvE, I don’t see why it shouldn’t exist in WvW too.

And Dailies are incredibly easy to do in WvW. Usually 4 of them can be done just by playing WvW normally, and then it takes 10 mins each day to do the crafting one or the JP one or whatever. And now that they’re adding more WvW achievements, we won’t even have to do those.

What cheap-skate servers are you playing on where JP-seige makes any difference whatsoever? You’re really arguing that the 2 BPs (times however many alts you have) you get are worth taking up a player slot? Or that you wouldn’t get just as much silver from actively playing WvW to buy the same seige? I have never ever seen a server run out of seige because the enemy is doing such a good job of camping the JP. You know why? Because you can freakin buy BPs at the seigemaster for the same amount of silver/badges you make in 10 minutes of just playing WvW. Servers never ever have a problem of not having enough blueprints; if you’re a commander and ask for 2 rams at a gate you’ll inevitably get 4 thrown down. The availability of blueprints far far out-strips the availability of supply, you simply can’t run out.

Ridiculous argument is ridiculous.

Gandalf has always had a big(in respect to the other servers i’ve faced) nightcrew, certainly bigger than Pikens(we manage 15 on a good night). I respect Gandalf a lot as they are one of the better servers to fight against, but guys please don’t deny you have the numbers at night that outstrips all but BB and T1/2 servers.
Sorry to drop in here, but i like following Gandalf’s fights. Hope you guys continue to have fun and hopefully we’ll see you soon Gandara!

I do remember dominating Piken hard at night time, ‘cos you seemed to all log off together at about 23:30, so our 20 randoms could take an entire map uncontested, and the night-ticks did help alot keeping us in T3 for a couple of weeks longer than we probably deserved. But against Aurora Glade we were always getting beaten at night, because several of their guilds kept their ops running until 1-2am, so it’s perfectly justifiable to say that for the past 2 months our night presence has been weak. But this week, now that our night-crew can actually achieve stuff without having 2 20-man guilds drop on them, our night presence is strong again. I expect we’ll move back to T4 in a few weeks, so it’ll be interesting to see if we can maintain that, or if we’ll go back to failing at night.

It’s certainly true that our nightcrew has been dominant this week, running about 20ish most nights, compared to 5-10 from FSP/MS. However, compared to the T3/T4 servers we’ve been fighting for the last few months our night presence is tiny. Our prime-time guilds and commanders can hold their own against the prime-time of AG and RS, but we were pushed out of T4 by AG’s strong night and RS’s strong morning. That’s what Immolator was saying, so no need to get sarcastic :P

GvG, or indeed WvW in general, is all about properly timing and executing a melee engagement. Range bring, erm, static field? That’s about it. I don’t count utilities as “range”.

Just look at that RG video you linked. Because you seem kinda new to this, I’ll just fill you in that RG are considered one of, if not the best open-field-WvW guild in the game. And their tactics are very much along the lines of using range to control and debuff the enemy until they judge the moment is right for a melee wrecking ball which engages, downs what it can, and then moves back out to rebuff/heal, and repeat.

I did see that. As I’ve said, they also controlled their terrain.

I pointed out what’s wrong on the Strike Force video. Their enemy sent their melee first, and they wiped.

But it does not take away my assessment that ranged are still in advantage for the incoming melee can be controlled.

And my point remains that the vast majority of damage comes from melee, that melee stacks aren’t nearly as susceptible to AoE as you believe (you’re aware of the 5-target limit right? because your first post makes it seem you aren’t), and that the skill of a good team like RG (or VoTF or SCND or hell, even Dius, don’t imagine I’m just a wannabe with a hard-on for RG) is in keeping their melee group tight and timing their engagements well. Their range guys are important, but what sets them above others is their melee.

Edit: And if it turns out this whole “Ian Boyd” thing is just a huge troll…. well, he’s put an awful lot of effort in to “pretending”, to the point where you can’t even consider it a troll any more.

While that is an impressive wipe, I’m fairly sure if they tried to pull that against any respectable EU guild they’d get their faces rolled. I mean, the concept of stacking might seemed alien to them, and their opponents were using zerker food.

All your suggestions are the opposite, that melee controls the enemy while range nukes. Sorry to tell you, but range just does not have the damage output for that to be effective against anyone who knows what they’re doing.

Well done on RS taking AG’s garrison earlier, you totally deserved getting it. How you managed to go into it and cap it in under 30s seconds to prevent any contest signs appearing is very impressive. Truly you are an honourable server to fight against.

I feel the pain of some of AG’s guilds, miss them. But this from [KISS] made me lol. Let me tell you that late nights in T5 are so so so much fun without having the KISS/FURY/FEAR insomniacs rolling around taking everything uncontested.

i was having fun with 5 man attacking millers bay on gandara BL, untill mya send 20+, no im not joking 20+ to wipe the 5 of us…

If you don’t like that kind of gameplay, mebbe you should sort out AoA. 50+ chasing our 10 around the map. In the end we just waypointed whenever we saw them, because there’s no point. Not like there was even a need for that blob, there was only our 10, and TDA’s 10 on the map, nobody else. And we weren’t even running together. The one time we did join forces, AoA had to go change their soiled underwear in Lake.

Solution to a problem is never to stop people from playing. Need to find different solutions.

IMO the only problem with upscaling is the green arrow, which acts as a big bright flashing “target me” sign.

And I guess the thousands of players who have each spent 100s of hours, gold and badges on gearing up their characters for WvW (gear which is mostly useless in PvE), they can all go kitten themselves?

I haven’t played sPvP before, can I go to their forums and complain that all the guys at the top of the leaderboard have a huge advantage in glory/rank points, that’ll take ages for me to catch up?

My point is people have spent time and effort acquiring WvW gear. You can’t just start giving it out for free, or make it completely unusable. If the game had been set up like this from the very start, then maybe this suggestion would have been better, but it’s too late.

It would be like creating a new vendor where you can buy legendary weapons for 10 silver, or just completely removing them from the game. Those who’d spent alot of time and effort for their legendary would be justifiably upset. Or if you just gave everyone Shark rank in sPvP for free, those who’d fought their way up to that rank would have good cause to complain.

IMO using under-levelled gear isn’t that big a deal in WvW anyway. When I’m levelling in WvW, the things I miss the most are the traits and the utility slots. Not having those hurts far more than not having the best gear.

We really shouldn’t be crying about traps until we at least see how they’re implemented. We don’t know how they’re created, how much they cost in supply or gold, how large an area they’ll affect, where they can be placed, how spam-able they are, target limit, whether they’re proximity triggered or player controlled, what kind of damage they’ll do, what kind of cooldown they’ll have, whether they’re visible to the enemy in any way, whether they’re destructible. We don’t know anything.

So wait before crying.

If I understand right, OP is a Gandaran having a go at some [JDGE] guys dueling. I don’t know who OP is, but I’m willing to bet he’s probably someone of no importance.

This is exactly the type of arrogance that isn’t needed in the game. And, if there is a queue, duelers need to take it sPvP. I know this really doesn’t exists on my Tier. I’d make certain they were Zerg Rolled for taking up the queue.

Arrogant, maybe. But wrong? I don’t think it’s arrogant to admit that some people have more influence on a server’s performance than others. There are scores of people I would consider to be more useful to my server than I am, just as there are people who are less influential than me.

And lets not forget the arrogance of insisting others shouldn’t be allowed to duel.
