They are if they take up developer time from other things.

A developers who codes traps, is not a developer who creates maps, is not a developer who modifies models, is not a developer who creates skins.

“Developer time” is not some conserved quantity over multiple developers wherein one developer doing one thing destroys the possible time of another developer to do something else.

I believe they’re all people hired and paid by a company no? The “conserved quantity” you don’t think exists, does infact exist. It’s called money.

Or am I mistaken in that, and that’s why this situation is confusing me? Did Habib evolve into Devon? Why didn’t we tap B more??

What we want:

Updated Commander/Party system and UI.
Bug fixes for glitching into towers, AC camera exploits etc.

What we get, that nobody wanted:

Siegerazer.
WXP ranks.
Traps.

Ask yourself, would what we want to see take any longer to design/implement than the stuff they’ve added?

They’re just completely out of touch with what WvW needs and what players want added.

The fixing of culling was great. But in nearly a year, that’s the only change thats had any real impact on WvW.

Votf on some next level kitten .

Dius had some great roaming practice in the last few days and had a bit of confidence going in, despite knowing it would be REALLY, hard against one of the best GW2 guilds.

We got steamrolled, schooled, r*ped, whatever you wanna call it.

GG and tyvm for the GvG.

Indeed, we’ve lost GvGs before to some good teams (SCND, Mya, and WAR just the other day) and we’ve beaten some good teams too, but VoTF was unlike anything I’ve ever come across. Even RG, who we never GvGed, but did meet roaming a few times, didn’t seem to hit as hard (although we were never close to downing them). When we’ve lost in the past, it was through attrition, slowly losing people to silly mistakes. This time…… it felt like fighting a team with perma-quickness. We were instantly shattered on engage, and never even given half a second to recover.

Hats off to you for the fight of a lifetime.

Haha, hilarious.. Why oh why am I serious since I’m from FoW?

I play WvW (on FoW) for quite some months, so I’m well aware of the lack of ANet to do any balancing whatsoever, since all those PvE kitties want to have their monthly carnivals..

Only because, I assume from the rankings that you only have like 10 guys who WvW, and the rest are all PvE scrubs who still like ANet.

I guess you must be one of the 10!

Why solo roam on anything besides a thief?

in WvW

Posted by: Ragnar.4257

Ragnar.4257

The thing about thieves is that they seriously expose the skill gap between bad/beginner players and good players, and act as a “multiplier” on that gap. That is to say that a good player on an engineer or a warrior can go 1v3 with 3 bad players and eventually win, but it’ll probably take a minute or two. On a thief, because of their burst and mobility, it’ll only take a matter of seconds. For some reason people are fine with being beaten 3 against 1 when the 1 is an engineer or a mesmer, because they can easily see how they’ve been out-played. But if the 1 is a thief, then they start crying.

But you take that same good thief and put him up against a good engineer or warrior or necro, and suddenly its a different story. Against an opponent who knows what they’re doing, thieves are no better or worse than any other class.

While its annoying trying to track down a d/p thief hiding inside a keep, if you’re actually getting killed by a thief in anything other than 1v1, then it really is a L2P issue.

The guild wars community as a whole have turned completely immature.

I’m not sure that auto-response of “we’re aware of this, but can’t say any more at present” is quite what people had in mind. That could be done by a bot.

I agree the forums and playerbase are whiney, but there are still valid complaints.

Maybe on your server. On ours, if the word gets out that a GvG is happening, half the map will turn up to watch. Do NOT assume it’s a minority interest just because you’re not interested.

I have no idea what all the lion/AoA vs FSV/PunK stuff is about, I’m not on your server so I can’t really judge, so not gonna comment about that.

About GvG in general though; people go on far too much about what “rights” they have, and don’t talk nearly enough about respect. Respect both for you server-mates and for your enemy.

If there is no queue, or a very short queue, for a map, and a guild decides to do some GvG in an area of the map that is completely out of the way of the rest of WvW, then it is disrespectful to interrupt and ruin their fun. They aren’t hurting you, so why are you hurting them? There’s no rule saying you can’t, but it’s still disrespectful. It’s like seeing a group playing football in the park, and then going and setting up your own game right in the middle, even though there’s plenty more room in the park for you both to play. Pointless and childish.

And at the same time, if there’s a half-hour queue for a map, and a commander/guild is desperately trying to gather enough players to defend a T3 keep, then it’s disrespectful to have 40 people sat in the corner of the map refusing to help.

I know you have a right to do whatever you want in WvW, within the rules. Nobody can demand you do anything. But respect isn’t something that should be enforced by rules. It should come naturally to any decent human being.

Also, consider that FSV and PunK are two of the best fighting forces you have on FSP, just as JDGE, TDA, Dius and YaK (and others) are for Gandara. Without them, both our servers would be a long long way down in the rankings. They spend hours and hours each weak tearing apart zergs and busting open T3 keeps. Now, that doesn’t mean they have a right to boss people around and demand things. But why can you not show them a little respect when they want to take an hour out to do something different? If you make your server hostile to the guilds that make it competitive, then they’ll either stop playing or transfer. Is that what you want?

TLDR: Show some kitten respect!

Living WvW: Dynamic Play and Server Purpose

in WvW

Posted by: Ragnar.4257

Ragnar.4257

Sounds interesting…
But needs some tweaking.
More small objective, less large ones, like one small objective per server PER MAP, while there is one mid- to large-sized objective per server and one huge objective(hold stonemist for xyz, hold all 3 garrisons for XYZ, hold all 3 keeps in Borderland X for Y), which applies to the whole matchup and lasts for a week.

Btw, most impossible achievement ever:
Stop Siegerazer from reaching the tower. Siegerazer will not stop to attack players.

Oh, I thoroughly agree. The objectives I posted were just a few off the top of my head. Ideally there’d be half a dozen small objectives going on across all the maps at any one time, maybe 2 or 3 medium objectives a day, and 1 or 2 week-long objectives, and none of them would be repeated/spammable.

So, to be clear, your strategy for breaking up zergs is to introduce highly rewarding, location specific events?

Your ideas have merit, but they are hardly a solution for the problems in wvw.

There’s a distinction between “zergs” and “PvD musical keeps”.

To be honest, I’m fine with “zergs”, if by zergs you mean epic clashes of large armies. What makes them boring in WvW is that they make a joke of the objective-game.

Some of the most fun fights I’ve had in WvW are when all 3 servers are fighting in forces of 40+ inside a single keep, building siege, pushing, withdrawing, for over an hour in some cases, and ignoring the rest of the map. Epic, large seiges are fun and clearly what WvW was designed to be.

Some of the worst times I’ve had in WvW are watching 2 blobs running around a map PvDing their way through T1 keeps, not even bothering to try and defend or fight each other, only aiming to try and PvD faster than the enemy can.

I want more of the former and less of the latter.

These objectives/events wouldn’t always be “on”. Only 1 of each scale would be “on” at a time, and sometimes none at all. Also, they would scale with the relative ranking of servers. So if your server is 3 tiers above the other 2 servers in your matchup, then you’d have to hold Stonemist for 72 hours, while the other servers would only have to hold it for 12 hours.

Also, the objectives your server has would be known to the enemy, and they would have a “counter objective” and a reward for that. So, from the example above, if your server has the objective to take Cragtop within the next 2 hours then the enemy will have the objective to hold Cragtop for 2 hours. If they fail that, and you take the tower, they will then have the objective to take it from you before you complete your objective to hold it for 6 hours.

Perhaps, if ANet are feeling super-creative, these objectives could even be woven into a sort of “Living Story”, except instead of NPCs and Tyria, we have Player Invaders and Servers. Think along the lines of the Balthazar Temple event chain.

Crucially, these objectives award server points on completion. This means that it actually becomes worthwhile defending places. As it is now, there is no point bunkering down in an enemy Cragtop and defending it all evening, because they will just ignore you and go take the rest of the map. However, if you can earn some serious points for your server, as many as you would get from PvDing the rest of the map, then it becomes worthwhile to defend it. Also, if the enemy can gain some serious points by taking Cragtop away from you, then they might actually attempt it instead of just ignoring you and zerging everything else.

Hopefully this will stop the joke that is musical keeps. Hopefully it will create more interesting fights as well. As things are, people run around in a PvD zerg, the commander looking for a tower to take that won’t take too long. If it looks like it’ll take more than half an hour, generally they don’t bother and will go searching for an easier target. This leads to huge amounts of PvD, and only occasional clashes of zergs either by accident or when a commander mis-calculates how long it’ll take to get into a keep before the enemy zerg arrives. This isn’t the epic seige warfare we want in WvW. We want to see entire batteries of trebuchets pounding a tower, seiges that take over an hour to complete, with the tide of battle ebbing and flowing, both sides gritting their teeth and refusing to let the enemy keep that tower. As it is now, this just doesn’t happen.

Hopefully this will add a sense of purpose, and a reason to defend objectives. As I said at the start, its been many many months since I stayed up late watching over a tower upgrading, because it just isn’t worth it either in terms of personal gain or server (points) gain. If, on the other hand, my server would gain some serious points and I would get a nice shiny chest because I stayed up another hour to make sure the objective completes, that would be much more of an incentive.

Now, these are just examples of what the objectives/events might look like. I don’t want to get too hung up on the details. I’ll point it out again though, that these events are PvP events. I just know that someone is gonna post something about how we don’t need more PvE in WvW. That person hasn’t read what I’ve written and is an kitten .

PS. I realise the chance of a player suggestion being implemented is less than zero. But I can dream can’t I?

Living WvW: Dynamic Play and Server Purpose

Introduce objectives/achievements/events for servers to strive for, on hourly, daily and weekly timescales. Achieving these goals rewards server points as well as the usual wxp/loot/karma, and possibly special extras (possibly in the form of unique abilites/buffs for a short period, special/free siege, bonus supply, etc)

It is important to note that these objectives/events will be ONLY PvP. I am not suggesting PvE content. You achieve these objectives by fighting enemy players, not NPCs.

So, for example:

Small Scale Objective:

Hold the Temple of Storms for 2 hours. Reward: 500 server points, and deploy a team of Quaggans to all camps on the map.

Ensure 10 Dolyaks reach Briar tower before time is up. Reward: 100 server points, 200 extra supply in Briar.

Make sure no Dolyaks reach enemy Hills for 1 hour. Reward: 50 server points, WXP Rank Chest.

Medium/Guild Scale Objective:

Take Cragtop on enemy borderland within 2 hours. Reward: 500 server points, full tower supply.

Leading on to->

Hold Cragtop on enemy borderland for 6 hours. Reward: 2000 server points and a WXP Rank Chest.

Kill 10,000 enemy players in 2 hours. Reward: 1000 server points, WXP Rank Chest.

Escort a Dolyak-Train from Spawn to Centaur camp. Reward: 500 server points, WXP Rank Chest.

Large Scale / Server Objective:

Take enemy Garrison. Reward: 1000 server points, full keep supply.

Leading on to ->

Establish a waypoint in enemy Garrison. Reward: 10,000 server points. Grand Chest.

Hold Stonemist for 48 hours. Reward: 10,000 server points. WXP Rank Chest.

Hold all camps on every map for a full tick (15 mins). Reward: 5,000 server points, WXP Rank Chest.

PLEASE READ THE ACTUAL SUGGESTION BEFORE COMMENTING, NOT JUST THE THREAD TITLE

This is a slightly gargantuan post. If you want to get right to the meat of it, scroll down to the second post.

The number one reason I see people leaving, time and time again, is stale play. We’ve had the same maps, seige, matchups and mechanics since the game launched. And while what we have is excellent, one of the most unique and interesting game modes I’ve ever played, once you’ve been doing it for 2-3 months you tend to have seen it all. By now, anyone who’s been playing WvW regularly since Christmas knows exactly what treb placements can reach where, where all the sneaky cata spots are, where ballistas will work and where they won’t, and good spots for arrow carts. I remember the first time I saw catapults on the little ledge hitting the water-wall of Bay and thinking “OMG, that’s genius”. That was back in November or December. By now, it’s simply another thing on the list of spots to check when Bay gets contested.

For whatever reason, it appears ANet are unwilling or unable to create new maps, which would be the best way to resolve this. However, they have shown that they’re willing to add other things to WvW to spice things up a little. The addition of breakout events and WXP ranks/abilites are proof of this.

This is compounded by the change to the server ranking/matchups. Previously, even if you thought you’d done it all, you might still decide to put the effort in “for the server”. If you wanted to see your server climb a tier, or get/avoid a certain matchup, or simply grind a rival into the dust, then you might decide to make the extra effort to stay up late defending that waypoint in an enemy Hills or scouting garrison watergate. Now, with random matchups, it kinda feels all the more pointless. Why should I stay up escorting dolyaks to a keep and watching watergate, when in all likelhood it’ll get zerged down by some insomniac guild half an hour after I log out? Anyone who’s been around WvW for several matchups knows that server rankings are largely a simple measure of population and coverage. Organisation and skill do come into it a little bit, but population and coverage can completely over-ride it.

For example, my server (Gandara) in tier 5 has the guilds and commanders to compete on even(ish) terms with tier 2/3 servers during primetime and late evening. However we have no presence during mornings and early afternoons, and that’s why we’re in tier 5 instead of tier 3. Likewise, lately we’ve been matched against servers from tier 8, and while we’ve been stomping them on points for 20 hours per day, there were times during the week when they were able to put us on the back-foot.

Now this suggestion isn’t trying to fix population imbalances or night-capping. However, it will try to adress the problem of lack of purpose. Before, server ranking points were a back-ground curiosity used to ensure fair matchups. Now, apparently, server points are actually what we’re supposed to be fighting for.

Getting stomped in your matchup by a server 4 tiers above you? Unable to even move out of spawn? Don’t worry, you’re still gaining server rating!!

Unsuprisingly, this doesn’t cut it for alot of people. We want even and interesting fights and seiges, not the chance to see a number go up once a week.

The other reason people (rage)quit is the omni-presence of zergs. I don’t think anything will ever completely remove zergs, it’s human nature to group up and stay together, particularly when we feel unsure of ourselves or threatened. However, the problem as I see it is that zergs don’t just offer shelter for the new/cowardly/lazy. They are also by far the most effective way of taking objectives and gaining server points, loot, WXP and karma. This has gotten to the point where the game looks more like “musical keeps”. Nobody bothers defending or upgrading anything, not just because its boring/expensive, but because its actually less efficient to try and defend a point than it is to move on and take another objective as quickly as possible.

So, this suggestion aims to address these three reasons; stale play, no reasons to compete, and no reasons to defend instead of PvD.

Okay, I’ll stop rambling and cut to it.

The thing is, that in 1v1 all the way through 10v10, 20v20 up to about 30v30, you can see real skill and talent making a difference. Once you get into the realm of 50+vs50+, individual skill means absolutely nothing, and it usually degenerates into who lags the least, rather than who plays the best. In clashes on that scale, because of lag, aoe limits, etc. it really doesn’t matter what you do or how you play, because all that matters is numbers and lag.

Thats why people find zerging boring.

Personally, if people want to play that way, I’m fine with letting them, as long as there are other small groups to fight (which, unfortunately, is often not the case). However, the reason I find zerging so offensive, not just boring, is that it is also by far the most effective way to play WvW. In terms of server points, XP, WXP, loot, karma, just about everything. Its the fact that zerging is so effective, and boring, that is why people are so angry with it. If it was only one or the other, then it wouldn’t be so much of a problem.

In theory a few teams of smaller groups of 10-20 players should be able to out-manoeuvre a single blob of 100 players. However, with the way the game and the maps are designed, that just isn’t the case. Blobs can easily defend/attack all objectives on a map, because it only takes 20 seconds to travel between them.

Supply is generally not scarce. You may not be able to instabuild 50 golems, but over the course of an hour it would be trivial to do so.

50 camp flips in an hour? Nearly 1 per minute?

Unless you plan on depleting all your keeps of supply, or unless your opposition is just gonna let you hold all the camps on every map, there is nothing trivial about 5000 supply in an hour.

I’m not saying its impossible, but it would take the effort of the entire server, an all maps. In which case, the limit. ie the thing that is hardest to get hold of, is still the supply, not the blueprints.

Aside from the sound economics point above, seige deployment has never been limited by availability of blueprints. You can instantly spot a beginner in WvW because they’re so eager to let you know they have a blueprint, while all the veterans around them have 20x the amount he has. Incidentally, this is why the argument that camping the JP is helping your server by “limiting oppositions seige” is bullkitten. The opposition will never run out of seige because the JP is closed.

The limiting factor on seige, golems included, has always been supply, not availability of blueprints. Just because you can buy 50 golems dirt cheap on TP doesn’t mean you can deploy 50 golems. You still need the supply. Whenever I’ve been commanding and decided I need some golems, but found I don’t have any in my inventory, all I have to do is ask and a dozen people will drop one.

Not to mention, why should I be separated from my friend in Ireland when we want to be on the same server and play together when we get the opportunity?

How did you possibly get that from the original suggestion?

I don’t even…..

This suggestion would solve alot of problems with WvW, and the only reason it won’t happen is that it’d be alot of work for ANet to implement. Which is a shame :/

WvW ranks should account not character based

Ragnar.4257

Your mistake is in caring about ranks.

If I see a “bronze colonel” in game, I see someone who has spent far too long PvDing, not someone who is awesome at WvW.

There are ways to defend gates without siege on the walls;) So yeah tbh i still doubt you would have succeeded;) But we’ll never know:D

There are ways into keeps without face-rubbing gates. Just sayin’

We definitely would have breached through to the Lords room within half an hour. Whether or not we could take and hold it, what with your waypoint there, is anyone’s guess. With arrow-carts on the upper levels and constant reinforcements/respawns, you may well have won.

And your raid-event…. lol. You’re welcome to try.

New Patch Notice Times...

Yeah, really not impressed with the 30 second warning.

It should be more like 30 minutes. Surely they know if a patch will be coming at least 30 minutes beforehand.

-snip-

Is [ADAC] (which i’m realiably informed stands for [Aim Das Arrow Carts]) up for some GvG this week? 10v10. JDGE vs ADAC, bring your 10 best?

And to cast the net wider, any MS guilds up for some?

You should ask for 10v30, then ADAC might consider it.

Not sure who would win tho :/

“But there are champs outside of wvw as well. Why pull attention away from what you are supposed to do in WvW?”

Because Champs in WvW provide some PvE (I like both Pvp and Pve)
And most commanders on my server don’t have a clue how to command – just bark out orders like we are expected to follow without question!

Oh what a surprise, someone from Gandara who’s too self-important to follow a commander.

Shockingly, there isn’t always time to have a committee discussion about whether we all feel that stacking up is what we really want to do and having a vote on it. Seriously, “bark out orders”? What exactly else are you hoping they do? Hold a kittening seminar?

Idk if i should feel bad for the commander having such an incompetant group or feel bad for you being victimized by a commander.

I suppose it’s not really a question of incompetence or victimisation, rather having unreal expectations when dealing with random players.

You can pretty much rely on people always taking the route which has higher rewards for little effort be it zerging, capping the sentry post while the zerg moves on or chasing down a lone player.

A lot of the randoms don’t share the commanders priority for tactics or strategy, they just want some fun and maybe some loot. Most of the hardcore players will be in WvW focused guilds or guild groups.

The expectation that all the casual randoms are going to share your zeal for charging huge enemy numbers just because the commander is swearing at them constantly is un-realistic.

And yet nearly every week there’s a new thread here complaining that commanders aren’t “skilled” enough, that they don’t use “strategy”, and that buying a tag with gold doesn’t mean they’re good enough to command.

If you want decent commanders to tag up and use “tactics”, instead of being stuck with the latest PvE-hero who reckons a blue-tag makes him cool, you gotta support them and follow them, just as the commander needs to look after his followers. Its a two way thing. And that is why you shouldn’t run off to fight the grub.

On my server, its very difficult to get any commanders to tag up for most of the day, and alot of the veteran commanders who used to kick serious kitten have given up on commanding, even though most are still perfectly active in WvW. This is because, by this stage in the game’s life, all the decent dedicated players have already joined guilds and the only guys left on the server who need a commander tag to follow are casuals who don’t want to do anything challenging or coordinated. They just wanna fire their bow at anything in range.
Which means that, while maybe 6 months ago you could get some pretty coordinated pug groups rolling and achieve some awesome things by turning your commander tag on, now it’s completely pointless to try and do anything more than “everyone to here!” and watch in despair as they scatter at the first sight of, well, just about anything.

What this match-up is actually like:

OMG group of 20 players. TWENTY!!!!

Gandarblob. Blobdara. Ganblobra. srsly, a whole twenty people in the same place? ridiculous.

I mean, I know [NR] had a group of 40 last night, but thats a community event, so its different. And AG players only count as 1/4 of a gandaran anyway.

Discouraged from Upgrading Towers

in WvW

Posted by: Ragnar.4257

Ragnar.4257

Upgrading absolutely is worth-while, and not just from a points perspective. If everything on a map is T1, then you’ll just see a never-ending game of musical-keeps, because things can be captured in less than 2 minutes, and there’s no incentive to defend. On the other hand, when things are T2/3 you often get much more interesting fights, ’cos defenders will feel obliged to defend their waypointed keep and come attack your trebs instead of running off to flip another T1 tower before anyone even knows its threatened.

So even if you don’t care at all for the points game, if you want good fights it helps to upgrade.

The key is to upgrade the right objectives at the right time. Upgrading spawn towers (briar/lake) on your borderlands is almost always a pointless endeavour. Upgrading a camp during primetime is a complete waste of silver. A waypoint in garrison, on the other hand, is incredibly useful. And a fully upgraded camp can be incredibly useful at 4am when there’s only 3-4 guys from each server on the map just flipping camps.

Its also important to pick the right moment. Starting a Fortify upgrade at the start of primetime is a very very bad move. Only upgrade when supply is full, and you know you won’t have much incoming for the next half an hour at least. Also, don’t immediately start reinforced walls after capturing a tower. Get some ACs up first, maybe a treb, let supply refill, and only then start upgrading.

Most experienced WvW players already know to do these things. The trouble is, they can be over-ruled by a PvE scrub coming in with his 10 legendaries and 2000G in the bank deciding to buy upgrades at the wrong time, in the wrong order, and then kittening off again leaving everyone else to deal with his mess. That is what I’d like to see changed the most, 1 person shouldn’t be able to burn 1000 supply and mess up an entire server so easily.

1vs1 or small roaming: warrior or guadian?

in WvW

Posted by: Ragnar.4257

Ragnar.4257

Guardian. As Caid said, Warriors are fantastic in certain situations, they can bring alot of pain and pressure very quickly while still being pretty tanky. But if a fight drags on for more than 20-30 seconds, or they’re up against a strong kiting class (mesmer/necro), they just don’t have the sustainability for lengthy fights and really need a partner to either take the pressure off them for a few seconds, or to throw them some boons. Guardian is just a better “all-rounder”; if you play it right, nothing less than 3v1 can take you down, even if you can’t down anything either.

Buy Commander Abilities with Commander Badges

in WvW

Posted by: Ragnar.4257

Ragnar.4257

Commander abilites absolutely should not allow any extra combat skills, or any boosts to damage/health stats. Otherwise, you’ll see people putting tags up just to have an edge while solo-roaming and camp flipping.

I like the idea of “All Seeing Eye” ability, and the idea of “commander progression” though. Just don’t make abilities give a direct combat boost.
