[Elementalist] Swapping into Air attunement causes character to auto attack nearest mob

There is also a red bar that show up below the air attunement icon when you’re out of range. The “range” seem to be at 900.

If any one is confused by what we mean when we say air attunement has a “range”, please see this image. Air attunement has a range indicator.

This needs to be fixed, still tries to do it even if I have auto attack turned off.

I have everything in “auto target/attack” turned off and it still occurs. It’s pretty annoying.

Even if you have auto-targeting off, this will still happen if you have manually selected a target. This can happen accidentally, like if you hit tab (default next-target button) or inadvertently click on a passing mob.

Clicking the air attunement button with the mouse works as well…

I can confirm this. If you acquire a target, then click your air attunement button with your mouse, your auto-attack icon will start flashing.

This would be further confirmed with the fact that using any attack skill, whether it’s in range or not, will trigger the auto-attack, or make the auto-attack border thing flash if the auto-attack is out of range.

I’m not quite sure what you’re trying to say. I’m thinking you’re saying: If you press any of your other attack spells (e.g Staff Fire-3: Flame Burst), regardless if you are in range for it or not, your auto-attack will start flashing.

I believe this is actually working as intended. This is because if you press an attack button, you are confirming your intent to attack your target. If you are out of range, your attack will miss. Walking into range will commence your auto attack. I think this is working as intended and not part of the bug.

I tested this will all of the weapon spells and observed the following:

  • all targeted spells^ will cause your auto-attack to start flashing (if auto-attack acquires a target or you manually select one), regardless of whether you are in range for it.
  • all ground targeted AOE spells will not trigger your auto attack, even if you are within range and have manually locked a target.
  • all defensive spells will not trigger your auto-attack^^.

^ Targeted spells are spells that will be directed towards your target at the time of casting: Flame Burst, Shockwave, Gust, Gale, etc.
^^ One spell currently doesn’t conform to this behaviour and triggers the auto-attack. I’ll make a new thread about it, then link it in Major’s elementalist bug compilation thread.

After testing the above and observing the behaviour of direct target spells in particular, it would imply that the game currently sees the air attunement “button” and some sort of direct-target spell. It’s behaviour corresponds to that of the other spells in this category.

I had something else I wanted to post about, but I forgot lol.

Cross-server dungeon runs?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Cross-server runs work just fine. I’ve done several. You need to form a party first. Then one of you enters and the others will get the option to join in.

The option to join in will appear if you’re in the starting zone for the dungeon ( or maybe you have to be in a certain range of the entrance? not too sure about this). Alternatively, you can also try to enter the portal to the dungeon and it will also give you the option of joining your party members already in the dungeon.

Edit: make sure you’re doing the correct mode. You can’t join an explorable mode dungeon if you haven’t done the story mode yet, even if you’re other party members have.

Elemental bugs/glitches thread.

Razgriz.7319

Thanks for making this post Major. It’s a great way to consolidate all the elementalist bugs in one place.

I’d like to make a suggestion about formatting your post a little bit better, if that’s ok .

Right now, the post provides a lot of information (which is great) but it’s kind of hard to pick out the issues from the descriptions and the links.

I would suggest something like this. Bold and maybe caps lock the title of the issue. This should be concise, so the reader can immediately see what bugs are already catalogued, and what hasn’t. This will help readers find what they’re interested in and post about what isn’t there already. This will also help you gather additional bugs from the input of others.

I realise maybe some of the issues might be hard to put a title to. Maybe you could try something like:

BUGGED SKILL A
Bug 1
description and link.
Bug 2
description and link.
BUGGED SKILL B
Bug 1
bug 2
etc.

I know this will be more work for you, but it will help people with submitting information about new bugs and keep this thread free of double posts about already catalogued bugs, as well as help ArenaNet track the bugs already posted here. I would do this myself, but I can’t edit your posts :P.

To other people reading this tread:
It would be better for everyone if you guys kept discussion of various bugs to their respective posts. If there is no post about it yet (and try to make certain there really isn’t), create one yourself and link it here. It will help Major in keeping this post updated with all of the latest bug threads.

There is also a red bar that show up below the air attunement icon when you’re out of range. The “range” seem to be at 900.

I noticed this as well. It’s the only attunement which shows this behavior. This possibly has something to do with air attunement being the only one that triggers this behavior.

Also being “out of range” of the attunement will still trigger the bug (your one skill will attempt to fire).

[Elementalist] Swapping into Air attunement causes character to auto attack nearest mob

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

I’ve noticed a little something you seem to have missed though.

It’s not only switching into air attunement that triggers the auto-attack, the air attunement button itself triggers it even if you’re already in the air attunement.

Air attunement -> Air attunement will also trigger an auto-attack.

I think the reason why the first attack is from the previous attument is simply because the auto-attack is triggered even before the attunement switch…

Though interestingly, the F3 button doesn’t trigger an auto-attack on a newly created elementalist that don’t have the air attument unlocked yet…

So I tested this out yesterday. It seems you are correct. Pressing the air attunement button while already in air will trigger the auto attack.

This leads me to modify my conclusion.

The trigger for this bug is in fact the air attunement button itself. Pressing it will lead your character trying to attack his/her target. The default for this is F3, but it works for the remapped key as well (I have it set to C).

I’ll have to roll a new elementalist to try out this with air attunement locked. Will check back later when I have time.

Gear Questions PvP, PvE, WvW

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

  1. I think you’re asking if you can use your lvl 80 PvE gear in sPvP. sPvP is separate. You will always get PvP gear when you go to the Mists.
  2. The lvl 80 gear all have the same base stats (the armour rating). There are different sets that give different bonuses like +vitality or + healing power etc. Dungeons will provide you with new gear that will look different, but will have the same base stats as other max level gear (for your armour class).
  3. As far as I know, the gear you can get for tokens in WvW is the same as PvE gear. You use your PvE gear when you go into WvW. It only makes sense that the gear you obtain is also usable in PvE.

Basically this. If you’re thinking of getting it because you want an all powerful skill, you won’t get that. It won’t outshine any of the other available elites.

That’s not to say it’s bad. It looks great and I use it from time to time.

Races and Grouping Question

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

You can actually join your wife in her starting zone (or vice versa) starting right after you get out of the tutorial instance for your race.

When you step out of your instance, head into your home city (it should be very close by), open up your map and look for a big purple coloured circle on it. This is the asura gate of your city. Find it and walk through it. You will find yourself warped to Lion’s Arch (which is a big hub city where all the races mingle in a melting pot). You land in a big square/plaza full of purple portals. Walk up close to them and look for the one that says the name of the city of the racial area you want to go to a voila! You’re there and ready to go.

The cities are: Rata Sum – Asura, The Grove – Sylvari, Black Citadel – Charr, Divinity’s Reach – Human, Hoelbrak – Norn.

You can travel back and forth between your two starter areas if you wish, or stick to one starter area, or visit them all. Up to you where you go from there really.

One thing you might not know is that might gives condition damage in addition to power, so you can look into ways to get stacks of might as a way to increase your bleed damage as well.

He’s saying Might gives both Power and Condition Damage. So stacking Might will increase the strength of your bleeds because of the additional Condition Damage.

Best Elite Skill for dungeons?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

I asked because the only 30-point elementalist elite is Tornado. The 30-point Golem you’re talking about is an asuran racial skill.

The other two elementalist elites are Conjure Fiery Greatsword and Glyph of Elementals.

I can’t tell you anything about the asuran Golems as I don’t have an asura of that level.

As for Tornado, I feel it’s kind of lackluster for dungeons. Might be ok for regular mobs but bosses frequently have at least some mitigation towards crowd control which makes the launching ability of the Tornado not as effective. Tornado does give you stability (immunity against crowd-control) though, which is always nice.

EDIT: Auto-targeting has to be on for it I believe.

This will also happen if you’ve manually selected a target (lets say you accidentally click on something while running by) with auto-targeting off.

hmm dont take the arcane trait evasive arcana, also dont take any of the traits that damage on attunement switch.

This bug doesn’t have anything to do with any particular trait. It will happen with 0 trait points spent.

I have a thread in the Bugs forum about this with some extensive testing. Feel free to check it out if you want to know more about the issue.

If you can post in that thread about anything I missed (or even anything I got wrong), you can help pinpoint the bug for the ArenaNet team while also raising awareness for the issue.

I just wanted to say that I’ve noticed today that the particle for Shockwave actually travels beyond the target if you’re in close range. Will actually have to test it out further to see if it roots anything.

Take Root has the same problem Engineer turrets have:

They don’t scale with gear.
They have low health.
You can’t control what they target.

They don’t do a lot of direct damage, but the bleed stacks up quite nicely. And if there is only one thing in the room (as in a boss), you don’t need to worry about targeting.

Sylvari Specific Skills Worth it?

in Sylvari

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

A lot of people seem to underestimate Take Root’s ability to deal damage. While the individual seedlings aren’t very strong, each one of them puts on one stack of bleed. When they’re focused on a single target, these add up quickly to a lot of damage. I generally drop them vs those big bosses, especially those with a lot of natural regen.

Take Root’s invulnerability is great as well. Used correctly, you can dodge a lot of damage as well as bridge the time to your next heal. It’s also really good in dungeons against enemies with big windup attacks. If you can’t get out of the area for whatever reason, casting Take Root nullifies all effects of the attack.

Switching Attunements & Targets

in Elementalist

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

Isn’t this also true for fire?

What I’ve noticed: if you’re using staff and have Fireball on auto it will attack soon as you swap. This becomes a serious PIA if you switched to fire from earth because you casted Eruption and want to combo field with Lava Front but that Fireball now delays everything.

This is just the nature of being in combat. Your character will try to continue to attack after switching attunements with whatever you’ve toggled as your auto attack. However, casting anything else other than skill-1 should overwrite the cast of fireball. I’ve never had a problem with swapping and dropping a lava font first or vice versa.

I’ve tested this extensively and have only been able to produce this bug when switching to air. But I’ve been able to produce it every time.

Fights with several mobs are a mix of above strategies, Frozen Ground (water 4) comes in especially handy there, where as Shockwave (earth 5) and Gust (wind 3) are not so useful since they only target a single mob.

Shockwave actually can hit multiple targets, you just have to line it up as a skill shot. It travels in a straight line towards your target, rooting anything in between and goes a certain distance past. I’m not sure if it just travels it’s full range (1200) or if it travels a set range past the target. It’s probably the former though, not traveling beyond the 1200 range.

If you get good with it, it’s pretty easy to root 3 or more mobs into a Eruption + Lava Font combo.

Razgriz.7319

I actually do not mind the Staff, but felt it was unwieldy in solo. It also seemed highly support oriented, with Water and Air having great support but little offence, suggesting (to me: I could be wrong) that it lead more to a Burn/Bleed condition build for its damage. I already do that with my Ranger, so I wanted more direct damage here. Now, that was my impression of the staff, so please do correct me if I misjudged. Would Elementals be essential for making staff work solo? Again, I already run a Ranger, so am not keen on a play style that makes the Elementalist use the same strategy

Running an Elemental Glyph is not essential for making the staff work while soloing. The staff requires more kiting than other weapon sets in general though. For example, kiting a mob inside the radius of your Lava Font.

However, there are some combos you can do as well (not combo field, just skill combos). As an example, you can start off in earth an cast skill 4 (rock wall that cripples), followed by skills 2 (bleed) and 5 (immobilize) before swapping to fire and dropping a Lava Font.

There is also a hefty slow you can utilize in Water (skill 4) to combo off of. Air has a stun gate as well.

Utilities that I have found useful include Mist Form, Armor of Earth, and Signet of Earth (immobilize and extra toughness). I don’t actually think Mist Form is all that necessary. I don’t use it all too often. It does get you out of jams pretty effectively though. Haven’t really played around with the arcane skills too much yet.

As for traits, I’m currently running with most points in arcane, water and earth. It’s basically left over from a dungeon run where I was trying to pull most of the mobs and peal for my party members. With these traits I don’t have to kit as much as before (not necessarily a good thing. Kiting is an important skill to learn for the game in general). I’ve done air and fire in the past. I mostly look for traits that synergize well with my intentions while attunement swapping.

Most important thing to learning an elementalist is learning about your weapon skills (imo). When and how to use them most effectively. Learning about and using your utilities well will also offset the elementalist’s inherent squishiness.

There’s already a lot of very informative posts in this thread, so I’m going to keep it short .

My advice to you is to try out all the weapon sets first and see which one tickles you fancy. Then stick with that set until you feel absolutely comfortable with it. I can tell you that absolutely every combination is viable if you know how to play it effectively.

Play style is also very different depending on your weapon choice. Staff vs double dagger is pretty much night and day. Pick one that you like!

Attunement dancing is the key! Traits that synergize with attunement swaps are good to look for.

I don’t think this is necessary at all. As Daedalus says, after awhile, it becomes second nature. I don’t even think about it any more and I hardly even look at my skill bar.

What I would suggest, is pick out a weapon set you like, and just play that set until you’ve reach that level of mastery. It’ll go a lot quicker if you stick to it.

Switching Attunements & Targets

in Elementalist

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

Electric Discharge is actually working as intended (as far as I know). If you don’t want it to hit non-combat targets, that’s a different story.

However, there IS a bug associated with switching to Air Attunement though. I’ve posted about it in the Bugs forum over here.

I’ve done fairly extensive testing if you care to read about it. It’s 4 pretty long posts, but it’s formatted nicely! .

It has nothing to do with trait points. Basically, when you switch to Air Attunement, your character will try to attack his/her target. This essentially means that if auto-target can find a target for you, your character will attack. This will also happen if you select a target yourself, with auto-target turned off.

I have fairly specific examples showcasing the bug and how to reproduce it. If you can take to time to try to reproduce the results yourself and posting about the results, it would help a lot in fixing the bug.

Posting in the other topic may be better because it’s in the Bugs forum and it would give it more exposure.

Can someone please explain what overflow is?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

The overflow is the queueing system that they’ve implemented. When a map on your server is full and you try to get into it, you are instead put on an overflow server. This server can contain people from many different servers who are also queueing for that particular map on their server. It lets you play in a map that is currently full on your home server while waiting for a spot to open up. Everything you can do on your home server, you can do on overflow.

You do not have to get your friends to log in and out and hope to end up on overflow. You’re friends can “join” you on overflow if you form a party together and he right clicks your portrait and selects “Join in”. Parties go cross-server.

There are can also be multiple overflows. There is no “main” overflow. They dynamically utilised as the need arises.

Certain buttons intermittently stop working?

I have noticed the same thing.

This only occurs (for me atleast) when you have many buttons pushed down at once. If I’m strafing by pressing W & D my other keybinds dont work. This is frustrating in sPvP… for instance, i have my blink binded to V, and if I ever try to press it while strafing it doesn’t work.

Pretty much the only bug I’ve found in the game^^

This sounds like a keyboard rollover issue. Basically your keyboard can only handle a limited number of keystrokes at the same time. Any more button presses are ignored.

As for the OP, I’m not sure I can help you. I could be some kind of conflict with the game that’s specific to your keyboard, since you say it doesn’t happen with anything else (are you sure?).

You could try submitting a support ticket and seeing if they can solve it for you. Just know that they are crazy busy atm and might take a few days to get back to you.

Casting lag/Skill delay in PvP since last update

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Razgriz.7319

Razgriz.7319

What you are describing is latency (lag), the time it takes information (in this case, skills you queue) to get from your computer, over the internet, to ArenaNet’s servers. It has nothing to do with framerate. Having internet issues won’t cause you to have bad framerate. They are unrelated issues.

There may be some issues with servers on their end (not saying there is, I can’t speak for ArenaNet), but I have not seen widespread reports of this, so I would guess that’s not the case. I am not experiencing any casting delay as of right now. I have in the past, mostly due to my own bandwidth issues.

My suggestion would be to wait and see. If this issue persists, I would contact your internet provider and see what’s up.

Sweet, I’m glad to hear you guys made it through! On to bigger and better things! (And more dangerous hehe ).

It’s interesting to see the two different approaches with the sword working as well. I personally found myself too squishy to go with the direct approach. Not that it stopped me from trying a few times haha.

As for the regen on the bosses. The seed turrets also have a “hidden” ability of stacking bleed, so they actually help mitigate or even nullify his regen. Each “shot” from a seed turret puts on one stack of bleed. So if all five hit the same target (the boss) he gets five stacks of bleed. The longer the turrets are up, the more bleed damage you get .

This is one of the better strategies for defeating foes with high regen. Keep stacking burning, bleed and poison. It works much better than just applying direct damage.

The My story section on this quest is still empty after the fixes from last night. I know they said they patch the bit about getting an arbitrary choice made for you when you exit the dialogue.

Just letting you guys know this is still an issue (minor issue).

^^ That’s the spirit to get in! I got murdered the first time I did this quest too . Crashed out of the instance too. Had to restart.

Also, if you could enlighten me, what is this thing about the HoM stone you’re talking about?

My character that did this quest also did not receive the stone on creation and bought one from the pirate. I also don’t carry my HoM stone on my person. I keep it in the bank.

[Elementalist] Swapping into Air attunement causes character to auto attack nearest mob

And continuing.

From my testing and observations, I can draw these conclusions:

  • Having a target selected – no matter what range your character is to said target – and switching TO air attunement will cause your air 1-skill to try to auto-attack (the border will start flashing). This image clearly shows I’m well outside of 1200 range with a staff, but switching to air while standing here will cause my auto-attack to start flashing. It won’t fire because I’m out of range, but if I run into range, it will start firing.
  • Having the Auto-target general option checked and being within it’s effective range (~1200) will fulfil the requirement in the previous point about having a target selected. Switching to air-attunement will cause your 1-skill to try to fire at the target auto-targeting picks out for you (it may not actually pick one due to camera angle or other unknown factors). If you are currently out of range of the target chosen, your skill will fire off when you get into range.

End of my wall of text… lol. Hopefully this helps someone figure out this bug.

Continuing from previous post.

Now about this happening while switching to attunements other than air. I observed this while testing with daggers. The 1-skills on daggers have 3 different ranges. The fire skill has 400 range, the water skill has 600 range and the air/earth skills have 300 range.

  • If you stand at 600 range in water attunement (in range for water, out of range for air and earth) and switch to air attunement, your character will fire off one water based auto-attack (consistent with the bug) but will stop after because you are out of range for air. The auto-attack icon will be flashing though (the square arrow border around your auto-attack skill). If you then switch back to water attunement, you’re character will continue to auto-attack using water.
  • If you stand at 400 range in fire attunement (in range for fire and water, but out of range for air and earth) and switch to air attunement, your character will fire off one fire base auto-attack (also consistent with the bug) then stop (as you’re out of range for air). The auto-attack icon will also keep flashing here. Now you can try a few things from here:
    • Switching back to fire attunement, you’re character will begin to attack with fire auto-attacks.
    • Switching to water attunement will cause your character to attack using water auto-attacks.
    • Switching to earth attunement will seemingly do nothing (because you’re not in range – earth is 300 range as well). But the auto-attack icon will still be flashing, and if you then switch to either fire or water, you’re character will begin to auto attack again.
    • The previous 3 sub-points where you’re character starts to auto-attack can very easily be confused to be additional bugs while switching to different (non-air) attunements. This is not the case. These are due to the fact that your character is still “in combat”.
  • Taking this idea of being out of range further, I tried doing attunement switching while I was out of range of all of my 1-skills.
    • For daggers, this is greater than 600 range. I start in water attunement, out of range of the 1-skill (and therefore out of ranger of all other 1-skills) and switch to air. The auto-attack on my air 1-skill immediately starts to flash. This indicates that my character is trying to attack with it, but is out of range. Now I tried 2 things:
      • I walked into range for my fire 1-skill (400 range) while still attuned to air. Obviously nothing happens, still being out of range for my current auto-attack (air-based). Now, in 400 range, I switch to fire and my character begins auto-attacking immediately. Again, this is not because of attunement switching, this is simply because my character was trying to attack, but was out of range (air) but is now in range because I switched attunements.
      • I walked into range for my air skill (300) and my character started attacking.
    • This can also be applied to staves and other weapons. A target must be manually selected for staves and tridents because the effective range for auto-targeting seems to be ~1200 (the range of all 1-skills for staves and tridents is 1200).
    • Being out of range will cause the very first part of this bug to NOT HAPPEN. Meaning, if you are far out of range, when switching from fire/water/earth to air, you will not get a fire/water/earth auto-attack followed by an air auto-attack. If you walk back into range after the switch, only your air skill will fire off.

The different behaviour when your character is out of range may be why you think you’re observing this while attuning to different elements. Of course it could be a different bug altogether as these are my observations.

Razgriz.7319

I did some more testing in the mists with 0 trait points.

Here’s a summary of what I’ve observed:

  • This bug doesn’t occur if your character doesn’t have a target (through manual targeting) OR cannot acquire a target through auto-targeting (I’ll come back to auto-targeting in a bit).
  • Throughout all of my testing, this bug only occurs when switching from a different attunement INTO air attunement (I’ll come back to this in a bit also).
  • This bug happens with every weapon set, including underwater.
  • I can reproduce this 100% of the time if both these conditions are met
    • Acquire a target, either manually or by having auto-target checked
    • Switch TO air attunement

Now getting back to auto-targeting. Auto-targeting won’t pick up a target if you’re camera is facing in a different direction, even if you’re in range:

  • Auto-target will pick up this golem.
  • Auto-target will NOT pick up this golem. (it’s the same golem. Didn’t move my character, just rotated the camera to face sideways.)

I don’t know if this is a factor to you not being able to reproduce the bug every time, but it may be.
