Gold can come into the game in 2 ways

  1. Thru normal progression of the game. This would be an infinite supply of constantly stamped coin as everyone is making money if they do almost anything out in the open world
  2. Buying Gems with Cash and converting to gold

No. 2 is wrong because the gold you get for your gems was put up there by a player that earned it doing No. 1.

If you could find a source for that, it would be appreciated, because while it seems the intuitive assumption, the gem exchange just isn’t a symmetrical player-to-player market like most of the TP is. For the easiest example of this in action, imagine at the start of the game, when the first player tries to buy gold/gems. There’s no way to put up an order for them for someone else to fill, so they had to have their purchase filled from the imaginary coffers of the Black Lion Trading Company itself. While currency exchanges made do have an effect on the rate of exchange, it’s not a one-to-one exchange.

…Barbaric and gladiator? I feel like “Name 2 ‘skimpy’ heavy armors” is a trick question somehow, considering Aerlen posted a link to a list of skimpy armor.

Having said that, on the whole I’m not that bothered by the armor situation in GW2. There are plenty I look at and think, “Yeah, that’s stupid,” but I also think that there’s a healthy amount of non-skimpy armor. It’s not always realistic or sensible, but it’s a fantasy world, not historical fiction, and crazy costumes are as much a part of the suspension of disbelief as my flaming sword or my ability to swim in full-plate armor.

I’d prefer more gender-symmetry between armor (see: Trickster Armor, Phalanx Armor,) but I’m generally not too bothered by the level of it. Maybe I’ve just seen so much worse in other places that GW2 seems fairly mild by comparison.

Personal Story Titles

I was really surprised and disappointed that there weren’t any order-based titles. I’m a big fan of the orders, especially the Order of Whispers, and it seems like a waste of opportunity that I can’t identify as “Agent of Whispers,” or “Lightbringer.” I can buy the armor/weapons, but a title would be nice, considering I could wear it with whatever armor/gear I happen to have.

The Orders are one of the easiest personal story elements to feel personally invested in, so it’s a pity that’s not capitalized on more frequently/broadly.

I’m afraid I’ve got to be another person saying, “If you don’t like the release material, just don’t bother with it.” If what you’re looking for is just to jump in and play with your friends, there’s plenty of that already available, with or without the new releases. The game might dangle a new carrot every other week, but it’s up to you whether or not you want to chase it.

If the only reward you want is “the fun of teamwork and skill,” then you’re not missing out Living Story rewards for grinding. You’d be missing the reward you do want by playing the content you specifically dislike, and that sounds more like work than a game.

Tequatl, the Aetherblade dungeon, the Karka Queen*, the Clock Tower, the Labrynthine Horror* and getting to all the Zephyrite Crystals were all quite challenging. Difficulty varies.
*These can be overpowered by sheer force of numbers.

These are good examples. Add in Queen’s Gauntlet, Super Adventure Box (hard for some, Tribulation Mode purposely hard for everyone,) and the list is longer than initially expected.

There are a lot of things on the list that we can look at and say, “Psh, that wasn’t challenging!” If you’re good at jumping puzzles, for instance, or get stacked up against easy competition in a PvP activity, or are just part of the mob doing one of the mob-dependent events, you might overlook the potential challenge. When you see them all together, I think there’s a good variety of challenges for players with different strengths.

My country/territory was excluded from contest [Merged]

This is largely speculation on my part without any official confirmation to back it up, but most international contests that I’ve seen can only allow entrants from particular countries for legal reasons. It’s not something the average person thinks about often, but countries have different laws and regulations regarding contests, which can involve imports, taxes, gambling regulations, and so on.

Unfortunately, it’s not always affordable, practical, or possible to ensure compliance with all the necessary rules for every interested country, which is why so many contests have location restrictions. I’m sure it’s nothing personal. >__<

Gemstore items that should be LS rewards?

in Living World

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

Asking if I’m willing to pay $5 for a skin is a bit like asking me if I, personally, buy snacks at the movie theatre. Whether or not I do doesn’t say anything meaningful about whether or not it’s a good business model. Even if I’m representative of the average customer, it’s not necessarily a business model that depends on the average customer.

And when I talk about the decline of rewards, I mean exactly that. Flame & Frost did last four weeks, it was also the start of it all, so wasn’t perfect, but the rewards none-the-less did contain some skins, so did the southsun story, and the dragon festival. The last two stories started to lack in this, and now the rewards that you would’ve seen in the LS are being put onto the gem store.

I’m not sure if you misread me, or if you just mistyped it, but Flame & Frost didn’t last four weeks. It lasted four months, or eight times the current two-week release cycle. It was four separate releases, January through March, three of which didn’t contain any non-gem store skins. You could argue that it was the start of the Living Story, and so they were still sorting out good rewards, but that was coming off Shadow of the Mad King, The Lost Shores, and Wintersday 2012, so I’m not convinced that argument holds water.

Now, that would be like if we hadn’t gotten any new rewards since July, (or August, depending on how you want to count,) instead of four weeks of middling rewards. For me at least, it puts these past two releases into perspective. I think it’s a little early to start panicking, just because they added a couple of items to the gem store during a release that’s a little short on rewards.

Gemstore items that should be LS rewards?

in Living World

Redenaz.8631

I don’t get the “putting it in the gem store is lazy” argument. Since the system is already in place for it, attaching the gloves or shoulders to the Tower of Nightmares meta, or some other achievement, wouldn’t really be any more difficult than putting it in the gem store. It’s not a question of laziness—it’s a question of business. The gloves and shoulders will make money directly in the gem store, even if minor percentage of players buy them. That might sound terrible, but, dangit, it’s a business.

As for the “slow decline in the apparent effort that’s been put into rewards,” what is the peak it’s being compared to? Flame & Frost went on for four months, and the only non-gem skin I remember from that is the Fused Gauntlets for completing the dungeon, and the jetpack as a super rare drop. (Someone correct me if I’m forgetting something.)

Tower of Nightmares is two weeks.

I see this a lot with online contests; you might be surprised by how difficult it is to host an international contest and still comply with all the appropriate laws and regulations. It’s a drag, but there’s only so much that can be done about it.

I’m actually surprised the list is as long as it is; I suppose a lot of European countries have compatible contest laws, or were just worth jumping through the relevant hoops for.

I second what Danikat said. You can do it at your own risk, but most people don’t have a need for it. The 15% fee buys you a lot of security for big-ticket items and convenience for if you’re buying in large quantities.

There’s a pair of sticky threads in the Black Lion board specifying that it’s not to be used as or to advertise grey markets, so it sounds like they don’t mind it officially (or else they’d call it a black market,) but they do want to keep it away from official channels.

How servers like ours can be matched with them? We lost our last match and we’re now paired with even BETTER server?

By “our last match,” you mean last week, against Ring of Fire and Whiteside Ridge?

Wins/losses in the league don’t change who you face each round, since the schedule was set last month before the league started, based on the WvW leaderboard at the time. The nine lowest-ranked worlds were grouped together into the Bronze league, so even if Drakkar is much more powerful than you, you’re all still within the bottom nine. (At the time, anyway. Drakkar has managed to overtake Underworld since the tournament started, but it’s still in the Bronze league.)

(Bold = higher rank, italics = lower rank)
Blacktide | Surmia | Arborstone
Blacktide | Ring of Fire | Whiteside
Blacktide | Drakkar | Vabbi
Blacktide | Fissure | Dzagonur
-Repeats Start-
Blacktide | Ring of Fire | Dzagonur
Blacktide | Fissure | Vabbi
Blacktide | Arborstone | Surmia

If it’s any consolation, at least you won’t be fighting Drakkar again. Since Blacktide is the mid-tier Bronze world, it gets more variation in its competition than Vabbi, and it has a pretty even spread of worlds that are higher/lower than it, never having to play a world more than twice at most. Except for weeks five and six, Blacktide always has one world higher than it, and one lower, in each match-up.

There’s no arguing that Drakkar is a big fish in a little lake, so hopefully your other matches will go better!

What should I spend Karma on?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

You can buy backpieces for karma, but none of them are visible. Most of the visible back pieces are from the Living Story or fractals, but there are some skins (Ex: Holo Wings, Desert Rose, etc.) that you can buy on the trading post and apply to non-visible back items you can get for karma. The skins are not especially cheap, since there’s a limited supply, but it’s an option.

Most of my karma I’m hanging on to, in case I ever find myself in the position of wanting / being able to afford to build a legendary weapon. A large stock of karma also comes in handy for crafting ascended weapons, for Obsidian Shards.

Speaking of crafting, you need karma to buy exotic crafting recipes, although it doesn’t take a ton.

If all else fails, Lost Orrian Jewelry Boxes are an option for converting karma into materials, coin, and a few odds and ends. I think I’d sooner hang onto the karma, though, unless I’m really impatient for money.

Casual player looking for a pet class.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

Ranger is the obvious choice, I think, and I’d recommend giving it a try. You can name your pet, swap between two in combat (four if you include aquatic pets,) and you can collect a whole stable of ones you see out in the world to swap between. Ranger relies pretty heavily on their pet for a lot of their damage, and has a bunch of utility skills that buff or control your pet. Other classes might have pets, but Ranger is the pet class, and the others just don’t push the mechanics to the same depth.

Rangers can also summon nature spirits, which aren’t as deep as their animal pet, but are still another thing you can summon…

For alternatives, I might suggest Necromancer, or, surprisingly, Elementalist, which has a pair of skills to summon elementals that follow you around. They’re not as persistent as Necro minions or a Ranger pet, but they have pretty short cooldowns, and they’re pretty useful skills. Mesmers do have clones/phantasms, but they feel even more expendable than Necro minions, given that most of them can’t move, and clones die as soon as their target does, if you don’t blow them up first.

legendary far too common?!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

I think it is about time to make legendary weapon legendary again:
TIME TO RAISE THE LEVEL CAP!

This will make all current legendary obsolete. New better looking and harder to get level 100 legendary can be introduced. Image your legendary weapons are rare again and not a standard issued piece of tin foil that everyone who wants it has.

You all agree with me? Yes!

I’m pretty sure you’re being facetious here, but I really can’t be sure.

Of course you’re going to see a lot of legendary weapons. They’re some of the most popular skins, for their utility, effects, and supposed prestige, so a lot of people are going to go for them. The people who get them are probably going to use them a lot of the time. The people who get them are probably going to be some of the people who play the most.

Ironically, it’s because legendary weapons offer so much reward for so much challenge/grind that you see them so much more often than expensive exotic skins like Foefire’s Essence or Vision of the Mists. If I’m putting that much time and gold into a weapon, I might as well make it the best, and I might as well use it all the time so I can enjoy it. Turning the dial up to eleven won’t solve this dynamic.

…Although turning it down to nine might. Funny how that works.

Still, in no way did the OP want such. His stance is understandable; ANet should have done a better job at world pairings. That is what his post is about.

Here’s the schedule for Vabbi:

Vabbi | Whiteside | Fissure
Vabbi | Surmia | Dzagonur
Vabbi | Drakkar | Blacktide
Vabbi | Arborstone | Ring of Fire
-Repeats Start-
Vabbi | Vabbi | Whiteside | Arborstone
Vabbi | Fissure | Blacktide
Vabbi | Whiteside | Fissure

They play everyone in the bottom nine at least once, the bottom five twice and they play Whiteside and Fissue three times each. Vabbi, Whiteside, and Fissure are the three-lowest-ranked European servers, and they see each other the most in the rankings.

What alternative is there? Always make sure Vabbi is paired up with at least one of Whiteside or Fissue? The leaves the third world to crush them both, without a strong world to keep it in check. Have Vabbi fight the bottom five only once, and spend more than two weeks on Whiteside/Fissue? Have more than three leagues, so that Vabbi never has to play the top four of the current nine? After a point, you quit having a tournament and just become normal WvW again.

I’m sympathetic to anyone who comes in last in a tournament, but, ultimately, Vabbi is the bottom-ranked EU server and they’re going to have some rough match-ups until they’ve played through everyone once and are allowed to start repeating.

If someone would like to try cooking up a better league schedule than the current one, at least as far as the bottom nine are concerned, I would like to see it.

Personally, I don’t mind the long cooldowns, since they require me to look at the larger picture of what I’m doing, rather than just one battle, and in return I get bigger, splashier elite skills.

It’s largely a matter of preference, and that’s okay. I figured I should chime in with a contrasting perspective, as long as the topic is being discussed.

While it does look a little odd if you’re dual-wielding daggers, I’m not sure it would practical to implement the animations for this. For every skill that they want to add hand-mixing to, they’d basically have to do a new animation for it that uses both hands, which would only play when weapons of the same type are equipped in both hands. (Since you wouldn’t want to accidentally stab with a pistol.) Then code would have to be written to enable the multiple animations and determine which animation to play when the skill is used.

It’s not the greatest technical and artistic challenge ever faced by any stretch, but it’s not a very high priority, either.

In short, I disagree with the suggested overhaul. With their long cooldowns and flashy effects, GW2 elite skills were designed to serve a very different purpose than GW1 elites, which were usually more tightly integrated into the build, even to the point of just being a better version of a normal skill. It’s a mechanic that works in the more deckbuilding-oriented context of GW1, but just doesn’t fit the GW2 style, in my opinion. I suspect whether a person agrees or not depends largely on how they feel about the different ways the two games handle builds in general.

I would like to see more options for Elite Skills, but I wouldn’t like to see them majorly changed in their basic character. Even though I can’t use them as frequently and they don’t integrate into combat flow as neatly, I find myself enjoying my GW2 elite skills a lot more than I did in GW1.

Vabbi is in a league of the nine bottom-ranked European worlds, which means it’s already fighting the closest competition available while still staying in the nine-world rotation. Even if one or more of the other Bronze-ranked worlds have enough of a WvW-playing population to crush it, there simply are no “more appropriate” worlds to match it with left. Since the match-ups rotate over the season, Vabbi is going to have to play against everyone in the Bronze league sooner or later.

The only alternatives are to either create an even smaller league (probably impractical) or to somehow buff the lowest worlds. Capping WvW population based on world population is effectively a buff for low-population servers, since it keeps larger worlds (who are still in the Bronze league) from using their full population, up to the normal WvW limits.

I think the struggle is just going to have to continue until a more favorable match-up rotates in. That’s very frustrating and discouraging, I’m sure, but that’s just going to happen in a multiple-round tournament.

To me, cutting out the crafting element of a legendary weapon is like cutting out the WvW element, or the world exploration element, or the karma/fractal/laurel element, or the dungeon-running element. It’s part of what makes building a legendary weapon a massive scavenger hunt over a diverse cross-section of the game.

While I won’t argue that giving each legendary weapon a unique quest line would be interesting, it would also lock a large amount of fun content behind “Can you afford <precursor>?” which seems like a terrible waste of resources. It’s a nice idea in isolation, but there are better things that development time could be put toward.

EVERYTHING, including legendaries, is way too easy to get because you can just buy gems, convert them to gold and buy what you want. GW2 fails in this regard and creates a pay to win scenario and a sort of aristocracy. If this gem to gold conversion were not there, then people would actually have to work and we would not be seeing nearly so many legendaries. Christ, I ran some temples last week and I bet 1/4 of the zerg had legendaries. Sure some probably put in the time and earned them completely in game, but I bet a majority used gems to pay for for at least some, or all of the weapon.

Sunrise costs $618.75 at the moment. Dawn costs $150.

There’s really no way to know, but when I see a lot of people with legendaries playing the game, I generally assume that they built them through tremendous amounts playtime, rather than buying gold with cash. Ignoring the cash route, when I consider the number of hours of dedicated gold farming that are practically necessary to beat RNG, even just for the precursor, much less the materials, for most popular legendary weapons, it’s hard to be tremendously impressed by any them. They’re still cool to me, but mostly for the effects and utility, not because they’re rare.

I’m actually glad people can buy legendary weapons, because it makes it hard for anyone to lord it over anyone else when no one knows who bought theirs with cash, and who paid the gold component with coins earned riding the Queensdale train over and over and over again, or whatever else in-between. Say what you will about it creating “aristocracy,” but at least this way the aristocrats know they have to do more than flash a merit badge before demanding respect.

Dawn = 600g = $150 = 10 hours of a job that pays $15/hour.
$150 sounds like a lot of money for a digital sword, and it is, but if I’m not having fun champ training / dungeon running / whatever else, chances are it’s going to feel as much like work as a job, game or no game, and it’s going to take a heck of a lot longer than ten hours to raise 600g. Time is money, and if you’re not having fun, you’re working a second job instead of playing a game.

Would I pay $150 for Dawn? No, but I’m not going to judge them for it, at least not anymore than if they’d forced themselves to play 10+ hours of content they enjoyed less than their day job just to earn it in-game.

Kasmeer Loading Screen

I would assume the one on the left is Marjory, given that the instance that loading screen is for focuses on her and Kasmeer.

In context, it seems pretty obvious that’s Kasmeer in the middle. Her hair looks a smidge shorter because it’s floating, but given that she’s distinctly wearing Kasmeer’s gold Phoenix Armor, and the related cutscene has her casting a spell to unveil the Tower of Nightmares…

More Rounds of Mad King Says Please

They posted the dates/times on both the release notes page and the official guide to the release, both of which went up Oct. 15, over two weeks ahead of Halloween. The release page doesn’t give a specific time for Mad King Says, but it does link to both the release notes and guide which do. Both of these pages showed up in the news feed on the account login screen that appears when you start the game. Basically, if you didn’t see the message, I’m not sure where you were looking.

I think 48 hours around Halloween is a very reasonable time for a holiday event that takes very little time to actually do, especially considering that’s the one thing with this Halloween that hasn’t been doable since day 2-3 of the release. Not everyone is going to be able to do it (Say, people who are traveling,) but that seems to be expected to me. If you’re busy on a holiday, you can’t go to a holiday party. In this case, it’s like the party has been going on for two weeks, and if you’re busy on the holiday, you just don’t get cake and ice cream, because that’s the time they announced they’d serve it at the start of the party. That’s hardly someone trying to screw you over, because they wanted one element to be actually on the holiday.

There’s a lot to criticize about this Halloween, but the schedule isn’t one of them. Anet’s been pretty upfront with the details of the schedule since it started, and it’s generally much less restrictive on when you have to do things than last year’s Halloween was.

Mad King Says was actually on the loop for 48 hours, from the 30th to today.

Release Notes

Mad King Thorn himself will arrive in Lion’s Arch on Halloween from 9 a.m. PDT on October 30 to 9 a.m. PDT on November 1. Laugh at his mad jokes and play his Mad King Says game!

That doesn’t help you now, unfortunately, but at least it’s something that’s being thought about! There’s a reason they’ve steered away from some of the super-restrictive timed events (Mad King erupting from Lion Statue, Karka invasion of LA, Ancient Karka battle,) and tried to make schedules more flexible for people who can’t be on at particular times. Mad King Says is still restricted to two/three days around Halloween, but it’s easier to catch it than last year, happily. (More frequent, I think? Not sure what the timer is.)

It would be nice to see the swimsuit too, but I think there is some technical barriers in how it would work. The current town clothes system would not be ideal because moving between land and water (something you would expect to be able to do in a swimsuit) currently forces a weapon swap that transitions us out of our town clothes. With the systems we have seen so far, the swimsuit would have to work more like a transformation, like the diving goggles, which means taking up inventory space as opposed to wearing the swimsuit. Still possible, yes, but not really ideal.

Huh, I hadn’t considered that before, but it does make sense. People might not like being unable to buy the swimsuits, but that’s a lot easier to justify than selling them and swapping people out of them the moment they start to swim.

Wow. I’m pretty sure most of the things you listed that you hate about GW2 are things I personally enjoy. Just a reminder that people had different tastes, and one player’s “simple patrol event, simply not worth the time” is another player’s “Oh, I want to make sure they get home safe!” moment, among other contrasts.

That’s getting off-topic, though, when this thread is meant to be discussing additions to how characters play mechanically, not the story or rewards. Plenty of other threads to discuss those in.

This is going to vary with each player, since each player probably gets bored with things at a different rate, but I can’t say I’ve gotten tired of my options. I mainly play Staff Ele, occasionally switching up my utility skills for conjures if I feel like some variety, but I don’t generally feel bored. I have a scepter, focus, and two daggers on hand if I ever want to switch it up, but conjures are usually enough to do that trick.

It probably helps that I have four characters total, which means I can switch to a distinctly different playstyle by switching character, before I even get into switching weapons on my alts. I’m not rushing for them to introduce more classes or a lot more skills because, frankly, I’ve still got Warrior, Necro, Thief, and Engineer totally untouched for me to explore, or untouched since beta, with all their weapon sets, on top of the unused weapons sets for characters I already have.

I dunno. Maybe it feels more stagnant if you PvP a lot and are tired with the meta-game. Maybe I, personally, just find things I like and don’t get bored of them easily. Either way, new skills/classes aren’t going to add very much to my game experience, because I’m still working through the ones we already have.

Have you finished all the WvW zones? They’re required for world completion as well, and I don’t see them specifically mentioned in this thread yet. Pretty easy thing to overlook if you’re just looking at the map of Tyria, since they’re not strictly on Tyria.
