You can also get fragments from jumping puzzles, which is how I usually get them. In that context, it makes sense that the Clocktower would give them out.
As for the Mask of the Night, I’m pretty sure it’s an armor skin, since the release page shows a character wearing it with Light Named armor, rather than town clothes.
There is a large tower/castle in Wizard’s Fief, Kessex Hills, just southeast of Garenhoff.
There’s no connection, as far as anyone has hinted at, between the wizard Isgarren (owner of the tower) and the new Krait tower.
I’m not sure I ever want to see the Wizard’s Tower in the Living Story. I love how mysterious it is, and the ominous, implied story around it. Even a good execution in the Living Story would take away some of the magic of the mystery for me.
As others have said. it’s too early to start smashing the panic button. We hardly know what it does yet, much less whether it’ll be usable in non-PvE, much less what state conditions will be in after the update.
No use worrying about it until there are more details.
Those daggers (or so I suppose they are) look pretty amazing, in my opinion, especially in the context of the dark, toxic-looking environment. Whether we can get these ourselves or not, I hope to see more of them.
Release PageAntitoxin Spray
Prepare for battle with a new universal healing skill! A dose of this cutting-edge Antitoxin Spray will cleanse yourself and nearby allies of poison, torment, confusion, and toxin. This skill is available to characters of all professions.
It certainly sounds like a new condition, since it’s listed in addition to poison. I’m doubtful that yellow-green glow is it, however, since that would require applying a new texture over any character who gets it, and that texture seems to take into account the krait’s scales, horns, etc. It’s probably a krait that’s infused with whatever evil energy or substance they’re working with.
Once per account JP reward, with worse subsequent run rewards (who needs Empyreal Fragments?)
…I do, actually. I don’t run dungeons much, so my supply of bloodstone dust and dragonite ore is waaaay out of proportion with my supply of fragments. While I think giving each character a pair of exotic, soulbound gloves would have been nice and hardly would have wrecked the economy, I’m okay with getting 20 fragments daily and some trick-or-treat bags after that. I know it’s not as many as last year, but at least I can do it this year.
I do agree with most of the rest of what you said, other than the Mask of the Night. I’d prefer something flashier, personally, but I suppose it’s nice to have a reward that’s not as…well, loud, as a lot of other armor rewards.
They’d be cooler and longer lasting in RP use if you could avoid the massive shoulder spikes on the Prince and the giant skull belt buckle on the Executioner. Heck, if they were top and pants in separate pieces, that would help. Alas, the shirt overwrites any pants you are wearing.
I think the reasoning here might be storage; assuming you don’t already have other costume items on a particular character, equipping one of the new-style outfits leaves you holding a shirt, instead of a shirt, pants, and shoes. While I have had some nuisance in storing all my town clothes, I’ve also been known to mix parts, so I’m not sure yet how I feel about this “reduced clutter, reduced customization” solution.
Of course, some sort of costume locker would solve the problem very cleanly. -cough-
They’re giving out the Mask of the Night this year instead of the (non-gem store) Witch Hat, so, yeah, that’s still 2012-exclusive.
I’m glad the Witch and Mad King outfits returned. Between the Witch Hat I linked above, Devil Horns, Phantom’s Hood, the Master Carver and Emissary of the Mad King titles, I think there are more than enough Halloween 2012-exclusive ways to show off.
Oh, I figured “BLTC”=“Black Lion Trading Chest,” rather than Company, because the Chest is the only item I could really imagine someone actually wanting to delete, since you can more easily use a tonic or booster to get rid of it, even if you’re not going to use its effect.
Chill out on the exclamation marks. Sounds like you’re shouting at someone who was trying to help you.
How about a /photo emote for characters and /photo * for groups that turn the idle animation into something more photogenic for group shots?
Absolutely. You can use /wave now for a similar idea, but it would be great to have some easier to work with poses/emotes.
Yes. You’ll lose the exotic armor in the process, but you’ll end up with the Magitech skin on the ascended armor.
Well, technically, you’d have to use a Transmutation Crystal, since it’s probably a safe bet that ascended armor will be level 80.
Hah, that’s happened to me occasionally; usually comes from getting KO’d in Costume Brawl, I think. For those who don’t get what’s happening, the game is accidentally using the same texture for the fire particle effects as for part of the costume, instead of using the correct fire texture. It’s silly and usually wears off quickly.
I suppose I should probably report it as a bug, but it’s harmless.
I’m on the fence about whether I like the style of the new costumes, but that’s just a personal preference. Mad King and Witch are as cool as they ever were.
As of right now, each of these costumes essentially costs you 42 gold and 50 silvers each , you used to be able to grab the infinite molten pick at a cost of 800 gems for 27 gold , and the pick actually has an use.
Wasn’t sure what they’d cost, so I put in enough gold for 800 gems last week, in preparation for the costumes. (I’ll find something else to spend that 100 on, rest assured.) You might think they’re useless, but, dangit, I love costume brawl and I enjoy having town clothes that I can switch into at the press of a button. (Swapping is hotkeyable.) They’re way more useful to me in providing enjoyment than the infinite use tools are. It’s a large part of my banked gold, but the only thing I could spend that gold on that I’d enjoy nearly as much is another character slot; it’s not like I’m saving it for fancier weapons or anything.
The economy’s changed. You shouldn’t expect the gold→gem exchange rate to stay the same, especially after people have made so much gold since Flame & Frost with the addition of champ trains and clockwork invasions.
The bottom line is not to buy useless cosmetics. Maybe I don’t get it, but what a waste of any money/gems as well as the time it takes to earn them in game.
However if people are willing to spend, Nsoft will sell.
Reminder that if a person enjoys cosmetic items, they’re hardly useless. So long as I enjoy the time I spend earning that gold, and enjoy a costume more than I’d enjoy whatever else I’d spend it on, I’m having a good time.
While I would love the cost to be less (who wouldn’t), the larger issue for me is still where to store all of them?
They seem to be thinking about this issue, because the new costumes are a weapon, a hat, and one chest piece that overrides gloves, pants, and boots. I’m a little disappointed that I can’t mix pieces with default town clothes or other costumes, but, dang, that is easier to store. Considering characters don’t start with a hat or toy, you’re really only left with their default shirt to store while you’re wearing the costume, assuming you’re not piling a bunch of costumes onto one character.
I’m also really enjoying the trend of home instance rewards. They don’t take up inventory space, they provide a reason to return to my home instance, they serve a materially valuable function, and they make for a great “trophy case.”
“You can only get them during the window” is something of a drag if you miss it, of course, but that’s going to be a challenge with any temporary content, not just home instance nodes, so I’m not concerned about it. These rewards are good enough to be interesting and compelling, but if you miss them, so far they haven’t been anything you’re going to feel at a major disadvantage for.
They’re costumes, and their skills are only useful for costume brawl. I’m not sure why this is coming as such a surprise.
Personally, I’ve had tons of fun with the Mad King and Witch costumes over the past year. Costume Brawl is underrated. <<;
Well, for the costumes, anyway.
Ah, I see. While I wouldn’t object to a dark knight class, I’m not particularly excited by it, either, and I think there are some potentially more interesting alternatives for a heavy class. Dervish, maybe, which I’m sure people would love to see make a comeback. At any rate, I’d rather see existing classes get new abilities than see another class introduced at the moment.
As for the name, when I think of the archetype, I think “dark knight,” “black knight,” or “anti-paladin” rather than “shadow knight,” which just feels like a clumsier alternative, setting aside whatever association it has to WoW. If they wanted to invent a new name, there are so many interesting alternatives, like “Reaper,” “Executioner,” or something.
Sometimes it’s good to call a spade a spade, and sometimes it’s good to call it a shovel.
This would be much-appreciated. While it doesn’t happen often, when it does happen, “soulbound to another character” doesn’t give me a whole lot to work with, other than just logging into alts and checking the bank until I find the right one.
…I’m sure this is a reference to something else, but I have no idea what you’re talking about. Was there another thread on this somewhere around here that I missed?
I can’t test it, as I’ve finished the achievement, but supposedly the finisher-canceling bug was patched out last Friday.
Dreamslayer is spot-on with…well, everything in this thread. Well-said.
Most of the time, “If you don’t like it, don’t use it” isn’t a complete answer to a problem, because “using it” will usually confer some sort of advantage, like an easy win, quick gold, or something, and not using it puts the player at a disadvantage.
In this case, though, there is no reward for having any given number of /deaths. It’s solely for a person’s individual curiosity, if they’re interested, and if they’re not, they don’t have to use it. It might be interesting to an individual player, and is generally meaningless to everyone else.
On the subject of lag tripping you up and getting you killed, that’s one reason I like the GW2 version of “Lifetime Survivor” being simply “Get _ XP in a single stretch without dying,” instead of “Get ______ XP with a character who has never died.” If you get laggy and die by accident, you’ll have to start over on the run, but at least you don’t have to start over on the character like you would in GW1.
I wasn’t even aware there was an achievement for that. Huh.
I feel like it would be better integrated into the Fashion category, although whether or not it should count toward the title of “The Emperor” is another matter.
Do you think it deserves more reward for completing it? Like, making the achievement into a title “Legendary Collector” or add more achievement points?
Well, for the first one, you fill in the Legendary Treasures medal on the character select screen, which is a pretty significant achievement marker, at least to me, even if it doesn’t rewards AP. And, of course, you’re rewarded with five Legendary weapons, which are the main reason for doing it in the first place. And you’ve probably hit Map Completion a few times, which earns rewards, as well as all the rewards you’ve earned along the way, or at least whatever ones didn’t go into the weapons themselves.
I guess I feel that it’s an achievement that handles its own rewards pretty well, apart from AP. Although, like The Emperor, it’s an achievement that has such insane costs that I’m not sure I like it being on the achievement list at all, at least not at its current numbers.
I always just sell Black Lion Chests. It’s one exciting copper, which over time has lead to earning me a cool twenty copper. That’s a whopping .2 silver. I try not to let the wealth go to my head and make me wasteful, but when you’ve got that kind of money, it’s hard not to live a little large.
\o/
Well…at least they could never find you down there!
While I don’t think the other story dungeons need a solo-able story mode, I have more mixed feelings with Arah, since it’s the culmination of the personal story. On one hand, I like the feeling of having other players, all at the end of their storylines, coming together for a story that’s bigger than any of them individually. On the other hand, if you don’t have GW2 friends or guildies available to go with you, you’re left to gather a PUG to go with you.
And you only have to get stranded two hours into the dungeon, only to have your teammates— or, help you, the party leader—bail out on you, to have second thoughts about ever fooling with “Victory or Death” again.
I don’t know where the “probably around Christmas time” bit comes from, other than the fact that we’re simply running out of 2013. Precursor crafting is still in the works, but it’s unclear when. To quote dev Colin Johanson from page one of this thread,
You will absolutely see a way to create a precursor available in the future. As detailed in our plans for the second half of the year here:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/
As mentioned at the end of the blog, as always things are subject to change as test and prepare various systems. Most of the stuff covered in the blog you’ve already seen implemented, or steps towards being implemented, however the precursor building (and corresponding additional legendary items) is the one highest at risk to not make it this year.
It is still something we absolutely plan to do!
Interesting perspective:
Say I make $25/hour.
Eternity= 3,000g = 50,000gems = $625
$625/($25/hour) = 25 hours.
Of course, that’s for Eternity, the grandaddy of legendary weapons. The other top-contenders cost more like 2000g (~17 hours), all the way down to, say, Frenzy at 1405g. (~12 hours.)
“But that’s doing a /job/! That’s not as fun as playing the game!”
If you have a job you enjoy, there’s a real chance you’re going to enjoy it more than at least part of the legendary scavenger hunt. Heck, Dusk, a precursor, alone costs 789g, and while I don’t know what’s typical the typical return for gold farming, you’d have to make 31.56g/hour in order to make that in 25 hours of dedicated farming…which is the same number of hours required to buy Eternity outright, if you make $25/hour. It’s going to take longer, because you’re probably not making 31g/hour. If I don’t enjoy gold farming, but do enjoy my day job, it’s clear which one is a more enjoyable and efficient use of my time.
I say “I”, but, no, I personally wouldn’t spend $100 on a legendary, much less $400+. My point is that other people might, especially if they have no interest in the required farming, or not enough time for it. In game or out of game, work is still work. If you enjoy the farming required, great, you’ve got a big reward for a big time commitment. It comes down to how you like to spend your time, and how much your time is worth to you.
I complained about this in game, and got told that it’s a labyrinth that is in ruins. I didn’t go and confirm this, but there are obvious places where walls have fallen down. If somebody could confirm that this was originally a labyrinth, I’d be happy.
I can’t get into the game right now.
Somebody confirm this so I can sleep tonight.
:)
This explanation seems unlikely, given that the four cardinal passages into the main area are wide and mostly clear, which suggests there were always four ways into the center, even before it was in ruins.
The Mad King’s Labyrinth is not a labyrinth; it is a maze. I’m kind of sad that it isn’t called Mad King’s Maze, for the nice alliteration on top of being correctly labeled.
A labyrinth, by definition, has only one path (no junctions). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labyrinth
(I blame “Labyrinth”. The structure in the movie was a maze. But I guess that just didn’t sound as mysterious as a movie title.)
While this is, to some degree, technically accurate, I usually find that to be the least productive kind of accurate. While the traditional Greek labyrinth had only one path,
the word has been in more general use for a maze-like structure since Herodotus wrote about it in the fifth century BC, according to the Wikipedia article you linked. Most dictionaries will describe twisting, confusing passages without the “single path” feature.
Considering the Mad King’s Labyrinth doesn’t have a beginning or an exit, it’s clearly a labyrinth in the more general sense.

The trouble with GW2’s storyline is less its content than how it’s told. Take Blood & Madness for example: You have the ghost of an ancient, crazed, butcher-king fighting with the ghost of his butcher of a son, whom he himself murdered and erased from history. The problem isn’t that he stuffed the Prince’s mouth with Candy Corn; the problem is that half this story is told via the website instead of in-game events, and the “struggle between the two for control of the otherworld” boils down to the two of them insulting each other (which is admittedly hilarious) until the player crams the Prince back in his coffin, without interacting at all with the Mad King through the entire storyline. It’s like a story with a beginning and an ending, but no middle.
The storytelling is just shallow sometimes. (Not always, but often enough.) I don’t expect a whole lot, because it’s an MMORPG, and I enjoy most of it with its quirks and all, but the issue definitely isn’t “make the content darker, leave presentation the same.”
To be clear, I don’t care how they earn it. I’m just curious because I like numbers and dislike frequently-repeated arguments.
I didn’t think you were, but I’ve spent far too much time on this forum in the past week to take any chances. You’d be amazed at the things I’ve seen.
RNG is RNG, unfortunately. Most expensive drops I’ve ever had were Celestial Dye, Final Rest, and a Metal Aqua Breather from Tequatl. That’s luck of the draw for you.
It’s why I’m looking forward to Precursor Crafting. Even if it’s priced out of my range for materials, that should, hopefully, cut the vast majority of the RNG out of the process for everyone interested in making a Legendary weapon, making the whole system more satisfying in the process.
For as much as it’s discussed, I wonder how many Legendary weapons actually have been bought with cash. There’s really no good way for us to track that.
Even if someone is keeping track of Legendary sales, there’s not a very practical way to determine who made their mountain of gold by playing the game and who bought it with gems.
To get slightly off topic:
Why is Cultural Armour rare armour? Once you’ve spent a large chunk of gold on it you then also have to use transmutation crystals to actually use it. It should either be a skin that is applied or Exotic with the stat choice option, like the gloves from the Clocktower event.
Excellent question. Order Armor is acceptable at rare quality because it’s 10g for an entire set, but as no single piece of t3 cultural armor costs less than 12g, it just seems reasonable that it should be exotic. 12g for a piece of soulbound exotic armor is hardly going to disrupt the TP market for exotics.
Someone could, and probably has, argued that it’s just an attempt to nickle and dime players via transmutation crystals, but I think it feels more like an oversight than anything, something that was decided early on and then never brought up to par with the availability of exotic stat gear. Even if it doesn’t get changed to “pick your own stat” gear like the Mad King gloves, I think it could at least stand to be exotic-quality.
I…think the OP is wanting to be able to put jewels (as opposed to raw gemstones) into armor, so that instead of having to upgrade with Runes (which often have non-core-stat bonuses) they could go all-in on pure numbers, but at a higher value than crests or raw gemstones would give.
Also, please, spell-check. I know English isn’t everyone’s first language, but if you mispell “jewel” two different ways in a single post, you could at least be consistent about how you spell it. I hate getting on people’s language, because I know it’s easier for some than others, but it makes a huge difference in our ability to answer if we can understand what you’re saying.
Doesn’t seem like such a bad thing to me. I don’t see an obnoxious number of them out in the wild, so I don’t see any major harm in having an increased supply of them.
I can sympathize a bit with someone who paid the higher price right before the change, but as that was half a year ago, in a game that’s not quite 13 months old— I think it’s had plenty of time to stabilize and become the new normal. Forging it might not be very efficient now, but I think that’s probably okay.
Personally I don’t agree with being able to turn off special effects for legendary’s. I am also a little confused why you didn’t mention some of the other vanity skins in your post. I personally find the super adventure box skins extremely annoying. I feel they take away from the over all atmosphere of the game.
The difference is particle effects, which are related to, but distinct from, the weapon’s model. No one is suggesting an option to turn off particular weapon models; Sunrise is still going to look like Sunrise, Kraitkin is still going to look like Kraitkin. (This is a joke, of course; no one makes Kraitkin. Which is actually kinda sad, but I digress.) A more accurate comparison would be if Super weapons left bright green motion trails when swung, and their users left big patches of pixels on the ground as they run. Being able to turn off particle effects preserves the basic look of the weapon, but turns of some of the more ostentatious special effects.
This is like your next door neighbor griping when you ask him to turn down his obnoxiously loud music. "If I’m not disturbing my neighbors then how will they know how great a stereo I bought?"
Nope this is more like you worked hard to get a nice stereo and when you play music on it your obnoxious neighbour doesn’t ike the music so complains to the police incessantly about it.
This would be an accurate comparison if the police gave you magic earmuffs that cancel out the stereo for you and you alone, while your obnoxious neighbor is free to enjoy it along with everyone else who hasn’t decided to opt-out.
Having worked a job that required me to receive and respond to noise complaints, that sounds wonderful.
These are vanity items, you can be jealous of other players’ items and you may not want to see them because of jealousy, but that doesn’t mean you can prevent hardcore players’ effort to get better visual items.
I feel like everything you say in this topic undermines your position. I was going to say more about this post, but I’m not sure I can do more than let people reading it stare in awe and wonder at what they’re reading without further commentary. Some will agree with you, while the rest will think "Oh, I hope they introduce a toggle just to stick it to that way of thinking."
Ugly effects need to be replaced with better ones, mustn’t be removed completely.
It’s worth noting here that some people like the big, flashy effects and others don’t. There’s no objective way to improve them. The nice thing about having some weapons be flashier than others is that those who want more subtle effects have options, while those who want a glorious unicorn streaming forth have an option for that, too. Adding the ability for players to individually tune that level of flash, for themselves and themselves alone, is another step to maximizing each player’s enjoyment.
Or, at least, as much enjoyment as they can get without it being at the expense of others. There’s no way to maximize that type of enjoyment since for every "Nya, you can’t do anything about it!" smile, you have at least as many "Ew, who spilled outer space all over the floor?" frowns. Better to make yourself independently happy, than to require your happiness be at the expense of others.
That seems a bit like waiting for a price drop in a game, and then asking if you can price-match to get a refund against your purchase price. Whether it’s through adding new content, lowering prices, or both, a year-old game wants to drum up new sales somehow.
I don’t generally mind Legendary weapon effects, but I’m not surprised that some people do mind them and would like to turn them off. I’m not sure it’s a big enough issue to get anything done about it, but, then, I would have said the same thing about player-controlled instruments, and now we have a volume slider specifically for them, so I wouldn’t write it off, either.
This is like your next door neighbor griping when you ask him to turn down his obnoxiously loud music. “If I’m not disturbing my neighbors then how will they know how great a stereo I bought?”
Quoted for truth. If someone doesn’t like seeing your magic footprints / special effects from your legendary weapon, making them see it isn’t going to make them think “Oh, what a cool hero who worked so hard for that weapon!”
They’re going to think “Ack, there goes another tool with bad taste.” If a person has the option to turn off footfalls if they don’t want to see them, they’re actually going to have more respect for the legendary user, because they’re not having unwanted special effects shoved in their face.
Is it reasonable to be able to turn off everything that irritates you about other players, like their armor choices, dye choices, commander tag, title, or name? Of course not. Is it unreasonable to ask that one particular, fairly distracting particle effect have a menu toggle? I think so.
Again, I don’t think it’s necessary and don’t really expect it. Again, I would have said the same thing about player instrument volume. Anytime you give players choices that affect their experience and only their experience, that seems like a nice thing to me.
Well, it’s hard to say, since we haven’t gotten a good look at it yet. It looks similar to the gem store masks in basic geometry, but with a unique texture on it. We’ll be able to tell better once we can get our hands on it at Halloween.
That drives me crazy. I assume it happens usually because after I respawn at the base of the clocktower, I stop doing anything in-game until the next round most of the time. Since Clocktower uses the PVP activity setup now, it borrows that system’s more stringent AFK timer to fight leechers. It’s just plain silly in the Clocktower, since players have just enough time standing around between rounds to set off the timer, but not to actually reach the end of it.
…Or maybe it’s a bigger bug than that, if it happens as Elbegast says. Then all bets are off.
Does it really count as a dare if it’s physically impossible?
For anyone wondering why the number is so large, it’s 2 to the power of 32 minus one, which basically means it’s the highest value able to be stored in a 32-bit number. No one is actually expected to reach that ceiling.
(2^32 = 4,294,967,296
but you have to subtract one, since you have to count zero as a number. Isn’t binary fun!)
Darn you, Kiba: I look back in my history and find myself trading exotic weapons at prices I charge for rare ones nowadays. I know the economy was different then, but, man…
Feel old now.
There’s no option to upgrade to the “Heroic” edition because it gives you the following items in the Heroic Chest that is mailed to you:
1 Suit of Legacy Armor
1 18-slot Mithril Box
10 Experience Boosters
“Legacy Armor” in this case means your choice of Krytan, Primeval, or Profane armor, each of which is available already in the gem store. XP boosters, likewise, are available in the store. The Mithril Box isn’t, but it’s easily craftable, or able to be purchased on the trading post for fairly cheap.
Basically, there’s just no need to upgrade to it, since there isn’t anything exclusive to it. If something in it catches your eye, you can just buy that thing directly, instead of getting it all in a bundle. I suppose a bundle could potentially be cheaper, but I expect it just didn’t seem worth fooling with to offer in the store.
Edit: I could settle for them just taking the WvW off the world completion also.
I would like this solution. We already have areas (Southsun Cove, for example,) that don’t count for World Completion, and considering that WvW isn’t even in Tyria itself, I think it would be better to treat it more like the other areas in The Mists that don’t count for World Completion.
I think it’s worth noting that there would still be an expectation of at least some WvW participation in order to get a Legendary weapon, because making a Gift of Battle requires 500 badges of honor anyway. Legendary-seekers would still have to play WvW, but they’d actually have to have some amount of success fighting in it, not just sneaking to the JP/POI/Vistas they need, and people who just want to explore Tyria can stay in Tyria.
While I think major changes to Eternity, over other, less-loved Legendary weapons aren’t necessary, given that Sunrise and Twilight already have special unsheathing and projectile animations, it does seem like a basic oversight that Eternity doesn’t reuse them. I mean, seems like most of the work is already done there.
In the meanwhile, you can turn off “game messages” in the chat to hide them, but as that also turns off loot and other messages, it’s hardly an ideal solution. Hopefully that’ll get fixed soon. It’s not the end of the world, but, eesh, it is irritating.
I would love a Toy Camera. I take a ton of screenshots, and while I like my characters, there are plenty of times I’d like to just get the scene without them. Not to mention the new kinds of shots I could get out of something as simple as the ability to look straight up.
That’s really all I want, the FPV, but if adding extra features are what it takes to excuse it as a separate purchase, I can tolerate it!
