I’m not sure they’re supposed to be distinctly different, or if the human pants just get a tighter cut than the norn ones.

Meanwhile, the sylvari country pants are about the same as the norn ones, but their Magician armor appears to do away with leggings entirely.

Probably just some artist making a judgement call (for better or worse) when adapting the armor for each race.

Belle = beautiful?

But, in seriousness, there’s a reason I said “by and large,” and it’s a matter of opinion. I actually think Emblazoned armor looks okay, bell-shape and all, but that’s really not the point, which is that I’d rather not see light and heavy classes wearing it.

Legendary Collector achievement

in Crafting

Redenaz.8631

For some sense of perspective, I think it’s worth noting that the Fashion category is basically 130 achievement points and a title (“The Emperor”) for spending 773g88s on cultural armor.

That seems obnoxious and insane, except Dusk costs 799g by itself. Other precursors go down as far as…

Okay, apparently Rage costs 41g. Sorry, Frenzy, you are under-loved.

Most of the popular precursors are at least 300g. While five legendary weapons is a remarkable feat, I’m not sure how high we want to set the bar for rewarding people for going above-and-beyond the typical playing experience. I almost feel like that cheapens the experience of getting a single legendary, being greeted by a title track that implicitly says “Well, that was nice, but five would be really legendary.”

I think an AP point boost for the single-legendary achievement would probably be nice, however.

I suppose rewarding players more for equipping multiple weapons would drive up demand in the low-end weapons, but I kinda think that would be for the wrong reasons. ;P

Edit: Sorry, it’s been a few days since I read the OP, and I forgot the achievement is already for having five legendary weapons. I think that’s stupid and obnoxious, for the reason I said above: Legendary weapons are a massive accomplishment, and casually saying “Yeah, go get five of them” cheapens the apparent value of a single one.

Candy corn into cobs queston

in Blood and Madness

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

Candy Corn is useful for several crafting things, especially in cooking. The Cob, however, is only useful if you’re going to buy Mini Bloody Prince Thorn (who is outrageously expensive) or if you’re going to make Mini Ghost Carlotta, which requires you to buy the Halloween mini pack from the gem store, but isn’t an insane deal if you like Carlotta or collecting high-cost minis.

Everything else you can do with Candy Corn Cobs is a terrible waste of money, for reasons I explain in excruciating, math-based detail over in another thread. Seriously, just don’t do it. Everything else you can get with cobs can be done more cost-effectively without them, and you will most likely cry tears of regret and misery if you make them into cobs. Likewise for all of the other candy upgrades, like Gibbering Skulls. They’re just a bad deal for items you can get cheaper on the trading post.

I may not be the biggest fan of Sonder the Seller, the Grinch of All Holidays.

Dual Monitor/choose moniter support

It’s not a real solution to your problem, but, in the meanwhile, if you switch your GW2 resolution settings to “Window,” you can drag it over to your second monitor, and if you’re using Windows 7 or later, it’s easy to just toss it to the top of the screen and let the Snap feature expand out as much as it can. I usually keep the client in my main monitor, since it’s larger, but I occasionally do this.

It still has the window border around it, however, since it’s not full screen, and trying to change it to full screen causes it to revert back to the other monitor, but not necessarily at the correct resolution, at least on my hardware, so it would be nice if it behaved in a more predictable way.

I don’t care how it happens, but I would love it if we could do away with all but one or two of the Snowflake materials. They’re extremely confusing, and don’t really have that much to craft with them at each level. At the very least, I’d like to see them renamed/reconcepted to make them more distinct from each other.

I liked the system for the skins last year. Winter’s weapons were still locked behind the Black Lion Chest, but that’s harder to be frustrated by when we also got much more accessible/affordable toy weapon skins. I’d like to see more of these, or a similar path taken, with one set for the Black Lion, and one less costly set for everyone else.

I didn’t play much of Winterday 2012, so I can’t comment much on the rest of it. The one thing I really don’t want to see is anything new with Sonder the Seller, the Grinch of All Holidays. He’s just a major buzzkill all around.

I do wish you could swim in your town clothes (but not fight in them; that’s another discussion.)

I’m glad armor types are restricted into weight classes. I know it’s frustrating if you have a particular piece or set you like that your class can’t wear, but I like that they provide another point of distinction to the three weight classes. You might just want a piece or two, but you know you’re going to start seeing plate armor on casters and ornamental dresses on soldiers as soon as it’s an option.

Some people won’t mind that, naturally, and it’s definitely a matter of opinion, but, personally, I prefer it if armor says restricted by weight class. By and large, I just think it’s going to look better, and it helps me size up other players more easily at a glance.

Or…give people a reason to wear town clothes, as right now there is no purpose to that entire game system other than costume brawl and RP.

Even RP gets almost nothing out of it, because town clothes options are limited to goofy costumes and next to no customization.

A reason like what, exactly? If they’re wearable in combat, they might as well be armor, and we’re trying to find improvements to the town clothing system without throwing it out entirely. If being in town automatically switches you to town clothes, people aren’t going to be thrilled about not wearing their hard-earned armor anymore. Invent some sort of mini-game that requires town clothes?

Costume Brawl was designed largely to make town clothes and tonics more interesting and fun, when they were originally just visual changes. If that’s not satisfying enough, the only changes I can think of that might make them more appealing would be a skin locker to let you get multiple copies of them— But even that isn’t giving you a reason to wear them, if you don’t already like them, as it’s just making their current function more flexible.

Halloween Outfits - Costume Brawl only??

in Blood and Madness

Redenaz.8631

Executioner’s armor skin as a costume, but the rubber sword is a PVE weapon? ANET – do you not think this is backwards?

You’d think that, but, frankly, I see people argue “It wouldn’t break immersion! Look at ____!” way more often than I see anyone argue “But <skin> would break immersion if it were combat clothes!” The simple truth is that the costume skins are costumes because that’s what they were made for, mechanically, and not because they couldn’t work as armor. Just look at the toy weapon skins from Wintersday and it becomes obvious that “it’s not realistic enough” isn’t the reason for town clothes being unusable in combat. Let’s quit raising that point for the sole purpose of knocking it down.

A bigger issue, I imagine, is making armor for each weight class, especially if you want to package the weapon with the armor. Executioner armor, for instance— Is it light armor? Medium? The axe seems like a heavy weapon, but it’s too large to work as one of GW2’s 1h axes, so it would either have to be a staff (like existing scythe skins,) or not exist at all, which basically kills the “Executioner” concept. It could maybe be a hammer, but then the mostly-cloth armor would have to be heavy. The Witch is pretty obviously light armor, and the broom could be a staff. The Bloody Prince outfit looks to be light or medium, but his staff would require the armor to be light or heavy, and makes for our third “probably has to be a staff” weapon. The Mad King outfit is the only one the looks like it could work for any weight class, though its scepter is only light/heavy. Looks like the weapons will have to be sold separately, which really hurts the concept of the executioner, who becomes “guy with hood and no huge axe.”

Unsurprisingly, most of the town clothes look like light or medium armor, even though their toys are usually light or heavy weapons. ArenaNet could, in theory, let any weight class wear any costume in combat, like in GW1, but they seem pretty set against doing that, given how none of the current gem store skins allow that, even going so far as to have three different weights of Aetherblade skins. I suppose they could do Witch / Prince / Mad King as a set of light/medium/heavy skins, like the Profane/Krytan/Primeval trio…although that would have required an extra skin last year, and possibly no new skins this year.

Also, imagine a world were a large portion of the warriors/guardians you see are all dressed in the Mad King armor, including fire, pumpkin heads, the works. Like a new CoF armor, it risks losing its coolness rather quickly. And, of course, then you have even more people complaining that the “best” armor is gem store armor, rather than dungeon armor or something.

15,000 Candy Corn for a 20 Slot Box

in Blood and Madness

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

Here is my tinfoil hat theory behind the entire halloween “mats gate” situation. In two words, the Gem Store… That’s right, look at the amounts of materials required

1cob = 1000corn = 6g10s
1pail = 15cobs = 91g50s
1g = $0.27
1pail = $24.705

Even if you buy the pail with gems, there’s just no getting around the fact that the value of the pail is drastically out of line with…everything, really. For the same price, I could afford multiple bag slots and 20-slot bags to fill them with. Minis and weapon skins you can at least make a case for them being exclusive, but when you look at the bag and compare it with near-identical alternatives, it smells less like a scheme and more like a poor balancing of numbers, or a major lack of awareness of the existing market.

Recipe: Gift of the Moon costs 2/3 that in candy corn ($16.47) plus 69g ($18.63) for the chattering skulls. Assuming you have the other ingredients, that’s $35.1 for the recipe, before you even get into crafting the Gift of the Moon itself, much less The Mad Moon weapon. Buying The Mad Moon outright cots 132g, or $35.64, which is surprisingly near the price of the recipe. Buying the recipe (say, if you want to craft multiples and sell them,) costs $12.16, nearly 1/3 the price of going the upgrading route.

The “upgrading candy” route is generally too expensive to be worthwhile, even if you pay in gems; you could pay real money and you’d still be better off bypassing Sonder the Seller entirely for everything but the Bloody Prince Mini, since he’s your only option there. I was going to say that it’s possible the market supply of old recipes will dry up, leaving only the upgrading-candy route as the cheaper or only option…but Sonder is going to stop trading Gibbering Skulls after Nov. 11, so unless the market hits that inflection point before then, there will never have been a point at which the upgrade route made sense. Ever. Regardless of whether you pay in gold or cash, the new route for making the recipes will have been absolutely pointless.

And if that’s the case, it would have been better to simply discontinue the old weapons, which would make those already making/selling/showing them off happy, without teasing all those who were hoping for a cheaper alternative. “It was exclusive to last year” is a whole lot more satisfying than “You can get it this new way, even though it’s still cheaper the old way.” If a restaurant that usually costs $10 to eat at begins offering an identical $30 meal, they haven’t ripped me off, since I can still buy the $10, but they have confused me, and seem pretty confused themselves.

Prices taken from GWSpidy at the time of this posting, and are subject to change, obviously. Halloween Pail does have a unique name/icon, but as that generally isn’t visible to other players, the value of it over functionally comparable goods is negligible. The Mini Prince, expensive as it is, is really the only Sonder the Seller item worth considering, since it’s the only item that can’t be bought more cheaply on the trading post.

Buying a legendary with gems?

GW2 is $60. That same investment may guarantee I find GW2 fun for a paltry four hours. But no, I’ve easily engaged over 1500 hours without obligation to invest in even monthly payment for access. And at 1500 hours for $60, my fun ended up costing me $0.04/hr.

Four pennies, versus fourteen dollars.

Darn right. It’s dirt-cheap entertainment in the long run, as long as you continue to have fun with the parts of the game you play. Put into terms of cost/hour, even subscription MMOs are a better deal than most people give them credit for (as long as you’re having fun, and not bored and working out of a sense of obligation,) but a subscription-free MMO? Very, very easy to get enough bang for my buck, whether I never pay for anything again, or pay frequently.

i can make about 100g a day on ori and wood across 20 level 80’s. its not really that hard to make money, the rediculous part is an account bound mini for 140g? you can keep that content, i dont view that worth the time invested.

20 level 80s? If you paid for those 15 extra character slots in USD, that’s $150. If you paid for them in gold, that’s a rather significant amount of time spent to earn that much gold, as well as the time spent getting them to level 80 and the time spent switching characters to harvest resource nodes.

To each their own, and you must be filthy rich (in-game, I mean, if you’re making 140g daily,) but that’s by no means a standard most people are going to get anywhere near. One way or another, you’ve made a massive commitment to the game.

I’m neutral on the name-exchange idea, but I’m against the idea of your character name expiring because you haven’t played in half a year. Living Story does enough to…encourage…players to keep logging in that I really don’t want to see “And you might lose your name if you don’t log in” added to the list of things you lose out on if you go on an extended vacation. Imagine being a returning player who finds out his/her name has been taken away: Not a great welcome back, is it?

I don’t think dormant names are a major problem. If you want a particularly common name or famous name, you’re probably not going to get it, but it’s easy to come up with a good name without resorting to symbols, especially if you’re going the “first name+last name route.” Just takes some creativity and persistence.

(To your credit, you do seem to have thought it out more or less thoroughly. I just disagree with the concept.)

I would expect it to return sooner or later, possibly next summer, if it becomes an annual thing. There’s just no telling for the moment. If you’d like to get a general feel for the art style of the area, the Sanctum Sprint activity takes place in the Labyrinthine Cliffs area (or at least an activity-specific area inspired by the zone,) and that’s still playable in the daily activity rotation.

I actually didn’t read your thread, because I wasn’t just talking about your thread; you and slsharpshooter both mention threads, plural, and while yours isn’t half bad, actually responding to your complaints, rather than giving you the “this was read” that you’re asking for, would take substantially longer than you give it credit for. And if they simply gave a “this was read,” people would still be dissatisfied by them not answering to specific points…only now people might expect that “Let me know that you’ve read this” is a magic phrase to get dev attention. They’re not generally going to respond to someone who asks for a “have you read this?” response, because when they don’t, people are still going to do the exact thing that’s happened in this thread, jumping up and asking why their thread hasn’t been personally acknowledged.

Judging from her post history, Nicolle Rodgers seems to mostly handle account support and Black Lion support. Even if she, specifically, reads your “Disappointed with Halloween” thread, and lets you know that she read it, that…really doesn’t accomplish anything, at least regarding your complaints about a lot of the Living Story stuff. If you have a bug to report or a question about the functionality of a trading post item, that’s one thing, but most of your complaints are about Living Story design issues.

It’s one thing to ask a support staffer something on one of the support boards and expect a response. It’s another thing to post feedback in one of the Living World boards and expect a response from a support staffer. I know you weren’t asking for a response specifically from a support staffer, but that’s the one you’ve jumped on for daring to respond casually to something easy and positive.

It’s a bit like going up to the returns desk in a department store and asking them, voice dripping with scorn, why their print adds are so bad. If they’re an excellent rep, they might pass those concerns along, but they weren’t the right person to bring that complaint to in the first place.

Because devs might not want to waste hours arguing about balance and execution on the forum? Especially when they know anything they say is going to be dissected by a wide bunch of readers, and, more than likely, held up by someone at some point as “ArenaNet doesn’t have a clue!” or “ArenaNet promised!”

I know it’s easy to be cynical about the kinds of posts that get dev responses, but anytime I put myself in their shoes, I absolutely get why they wouldn’t want to get dragged into anything complicated or especially controversial on the forum. There’s no major time investment to say “Thank you, we’re glad you like it!”, an exchange that makes both you and the person you’re responding to happy, but if you get dragged into a long, drawn-out, multi-point, controversial discussion on content execution and balance, chances are it’s going to eat up a ton of your time, and no one will walk away happy about it.

They generally don’t have a responsibility to post on the forums (outside Account Issues, anyway,) and that means they’re probably only going to post in threads that can be handled quickly, with a minimal chance of ruining their day. Few people like to fight over their work, especially not with the internet mob. Whether it’s on the job or at home later, the last thing I want to do is get into a written grilling session about my professional work with a bunch of strangers who are already worked up over something. My boss can grill me about what I’m doing, but I don’t have to engage individual customers on it. That’s not unreasonable.

And, of course, that’s not even getting into the issue that not every single dev is involved with every part of the game, or can answer any given question.

I’d say something on-topic, but I’ve already posted in this thread, and really just wanted to address the two posts jumping on the dev and demanding answers.

Some stores, both online and retail, sell gem cards, which are basically gift cards for gems. I think their MSRP is on par with the in-game costs, but then you’re possibly also on the hook for sales tax, as usual with gift cards. Also, I’m not sure they’re available outside the United States.

I would ask support for help if it continues to be an issue. Good luck!

Why are traits roman numerals and not images?

It’s one thing to read them, but I wonder how many people have to take a beat to process them. I never remember off-hand what numbers my traits are; if I want to change them, I always have to mouseover the other ones to find the one I’m looking for.

It’s like having an analog clock with no numbers on it. You can easily read it, but would it be faster to read it with numbers? Or if it were a digital clock? Not if you read it a lot, of course, and get used to it, but I’m not sure how many people change their traits frequently enough to memorize all the Roman numerals, especially if they play multiple classes.

Trading Fun for Convenience

Cus I will never have the experience of traveling from Plains of Ashford to The Grove, which would be an incredible journey.

Plains of Ashford to Black Citadel to Diessa Plateau to Wayfarer Foothills to Snowden Drifts to Gendarren Fields to Kessex Hills to Caledon Forest to the Grove. It’s doable if you choose to.

Seconded. I like to explore, and I have some fond memories of walking from Rata Sum to Divinity’s Reach, not for any particular reason, but just because it was what I felt like doing that day. For casual exploring, the only thing stopping you is yourself.

And don’t give me the “then don’t use waypoints” speech, cus it’s like mounts. You put yourself at a disadvantage by not using them.

So, the only way to get you to accept slower travel is if there is no alternative? You’re only willing to be inconvenienced if everyone is? What disadvantage? Who are you competing with, and about what?

Excellent questions. It depends on what you want, ultimately, out of your experience. If you want to see the world, don’t use waypoints. If you want to get around quickly (say, to a dungeon,) use a waypoint.

If I’m in a hurry, I’m not going to explore every nook of Applenook, or every crag of Cragstead. If my dungeon party is waiting for me and I can’t teleport, I’m going to take what I know is the quickest and most direct route to the dungeon, without taking time for sightseeing. Given that waypoint travel requires you to reach the waypoint on foot first, the difference doesn’t seem to be whether I’ll see more of the world without waypoints, but whether or not I’ll see the same roads dozens of times.

If you’re not playing for efficiency, there is no reason why you can’t have the magical, adventuring experience you’re asking for. If you are playing for efficiency, it seems like you’d end up skipping over tons of hidden gems anyway, as you travel the same paths over and over again.

Suggestion: Press [Y] while in the game to bring up the Looking for Group menu. If there isn’t a party listed for the thing you want to do, you can advertise your party and have other people join you.

When you write a description for your party, try to be as helpful and clear as you can. Post it in the right category for what you want to do (Open World, Personal Story, Dungeons, etc.)

Oh, and welcome to Guild Wars 2!

Solution to the Scarlet Problem

in Living World

Not in favor, for several reasons. I’ll resist jumping on the issue of how many people like/dislike Scarlet, except to say that it’s important to remember that a large number of players likely don’t even participate in the web community, or voice an opinion on Scarlet if they do. It’s very, very easy to see a lot of people complaining about something on forums, but that’s hardly an exact metric.

Unless there’s a lot more development and conclusion to Scarlet’s story than you’ve suggested, I’d find that incredibly anticlimactic. I think even people who hate Scarlet would rather kill her with their own hands, than to see her suddenly crushed without even giving us an opportunity to defeat her first.

I’d rather not see Isgarren in the Living Story; there’s an extremely, potentially very dark implied story in Wizard’s Fief, and I, personally, would rather let some mysteries remain mysterious.

While I’d like to see Tengu do something more eventually, I don’t want them brought into a larger role in the game as an afterthought. I’d like to see it done right, and “Who knows, maybe even the Tengu will come out?” is definitely an afterthought.

I would like to see the Krait Tower be some build up to the next Elder Dragon, and hopefully be drawing Scarlet’s story closer to a conclusion.

Why are people hating on Halloween?

in Blood and Madness

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

The content that returned from last year is still good, and the story instances are entertaining, but a lot of stuff has been cut for no readily apparently reason (No, really, a lot of stuff!), the storyline ends extremely abruptly (beginning, end, no middle at all,) and the prices for Sonder the Seller are just so high that a lot of players are excluded from some of the new/returning Halloween content.

There are some nice elements, but they have a lot of flaws to compete with in public perception. Last year’s content was strong, but it’s been somewhat gutted this year, and it’s hard not to feel disappointed, like you know the team involved is capable than a lot more than this.

(Which isn’t an attack on them, mind you. I know there are budgets, timetables, personal crises, and any number of other things we’re not aware of that could explain the situation. Whatever the reason is, there’s just this feeling of massively missed potential in Blood & Madness.)

Town Clothes??? WHY??? :'(

in Black Lion Trading Co

I sympathize with people who want to wear their favorite town clothes as armor, but I also like town clothes more than the average person, so I’m personally happy with the system.

“Because it would look silly to see people dressed up as Mad King in regular gear..”

Meanwhile paper bags and dragon wings… Anet what is wrong with you?

I feel like I see people tearing down this argument a lot, but people actually support it…very rarely, if ever. I’m sure someone, somewhere complains about immersion or silliness of wearing town clothes in combat, but I see a heck of a lot people raise the argument for the sole purpose of shooting it down themselves in the same post.

I mean, maybe it’s possible to interpret lordkrall’s post that way, but I read it as being more mechanical than flavorful.

I’m kinda sad that they brought back the old skins, I mean they’re just town clothes so i guess it doesn’t really matter, but I like the idea of having something exclusive that says “hey I played during this holiday and here’s proof”

Something like the Devil Horns, Witch Hat, Phantom’s Hood, “Master Carver” and “Emissary of the Mad King” titles, or either level of the Mad Memoires?

There are more than enough ways to show you participated in Halloween 2012, so I don’t think the Witch and Mad King outfits need to be restricted to that list as well.

yeah, that’s kinda all pve stuff tho.

Hrm. I’m not sure why you’re sad about them bringing back outfits they’ve already created, then, since they were never usable in your preferred game mode in the first place.

:/

How about just numbers rather than Roman numerals? No one writes their build in Roman numerals, and it’s easier to process “7” than “VII” .

Roman numerals might look better on the paper texture of the trait hexagons, but in terms of usability…

Limit Breaks in Gw2?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

I’ve played a fair few FF games, and I have absolutely no idea which one this limit break concept is coming from. The name is usually associated with FF7, but I don’t believe there were any party-related aspects to it like you describe, and I know it’d definitely not like the “limit-break-like” abilities I know from other FF games. (Trance, Overdrive)

Anyway, in my mind, the “limit break” concept is too similar to elite skills, which serve the role of “big, special move you can do rarely.” As for using them to rebalance rangers and engineers, I think it would be a lot better to buff/tweak/rework their existing class mechanics than to throw in something completely different. It’s not like those mechanics are fundamentally broken.

(They might need a fair amount of work, as in the case of Ranger pets, but they’re not fundamentally broken.)

Edit:
I haven’t played much as a necromancer, just in beta, but their ability to transform seems even closer to a limit break than elite skills, mechanically.

New Skills! Oh sorry, Skill!

in Living World

Wether it is subject to change or not, all the content in that post was promised to be released in 2013.

Umm, I don’t think you know what the phrase “subject to change” mean.

Quoted for truth.

My fear is they will introduce the new skills the same way they have added back-pieces and other armour in game… it will be the exact same skill between all classes. No differences at all between classes…

I think its important to raise concern now because this is something ArenaNet is very likely to do.

GW1 had plenty of cross-class skills, and they were hardly game-breakers. Indeed, most of them had a relatively narrow use, or could be outclassed by a class-specific spell. I wouldn’t worry about it until we have more information, and I wouldn’t take it as a sign that all future skill introductions are going to be cross-class.

Also this patch is seriously lacking content, i get the feeling Ascended armour was meant to be added in this patch but because of complaints about how ugly the sets looked they are holding off?

We know a couple rewards, and we know the plot setup, but we really don’t know much about the content, other than that it involves helping detectives investigate the Krait tower. While I don’t expect ascended armor to be in this update, I’m expecting there to be more than meets the eye to it at this point.
