Sword is useable if you use 3 to dodge, 2 to get yourself out of trouble and an offhand like dagger that adds an extra dodge. But it really is very hard to pull off well in PvE as it stands. If you arent jumping through dead mobs off cliffs you’re rooted in the middle of them desperately hoping you will manage to roll out eventually. I’d love to take it over Axe for AoE pet support and I do whenever feasable but sadly that’s only on a few encounters where either there is a lot of space or against mobs that are wimpy in mellee.
You can be effective and friendly. The magic ingredient is patience.
I’m good enough to 3 man fractals with my guildmates easily and I’m normally the last person standing when things go wrong. But when I pug and I have a group that isn’t quite as experienced I simply aim to help them as best I can. I don’t get rude when they fail, I give advice on encounters and encourage people to ask questions. I make stupid jokes and just have a laugh whilst helping people with their game.
When people are relaxed and enjoying themselves they play much much better. So if you’re skilled, don’t be a kitten. Use your powers for good!
It seems you got the server with the rude people on. On our server “ring of fire” eu there are tons and tons of groups running fractals from lvl1 right up to lvl9 i think is the highest i saw. And actually there are people that dont really care bout the accended gear which have no problem jumping into a lvl1 run just because its fun
It’s the same on Seafarer’s Rest EU. I’ve never ever been rejected from a party for my class (ranger main), been asked to link my gear or had people randomly insulting me. I’ve had one or two rare instances of rude players in dungeons but a quick “any more kitten from you and I’m leaving” tends to quieten them down, after all they want to complete the dungeon. I’ve never had to leave a group due to another member’s attitude.
Also as others have mentioned finding a friendly guild will really help. Sure you will have to make a bit of effort but I know in my guild anyone who chats on g-chat and has a friendly attitude is more than welcome on group content runs. I also make sure to run many fotm groups with diffierent guild members to ensure we are all around the same base lvl.
I don’t need Anet to constantly assure me they are working on improving their game. I know it’s in their own best interests. I know that’s what they are doing rather than getting involved in petty discussions that have been hashed out a thousand times already.
My main is a Ranger (80, exotics, tier 3 cultural etc) but is it my only toon? Hell no. I’m working on getting an 80 of every class. I want my money’s worth. So to me the fact that the Ranger is a bit behind the other classes is far less of an issue. I’ll be patient and wait for fixes whilst continuing to enjoy my Ranger as I always have. If I ever feel like seeing some bigger numbers then I’ll play one of my other classes. Simple as.
Will I throw all the toys out the pram and cry to Anet because I havent had the changes to one class I wanted right now? Nope.. that would be childish.
FYI Linking a video to give Anet the finger is also childish.
In gw1 I had a maxed out toon for every class. I’m all about getting my money’s worth. I love rangers too, and the ranger will always be my first class and my ‘main’. Sure atm it isnt as good as other classes, but that will get fixed in time. Doesn’t mean I enjoy playing ranger any less. And if I ever feel the need to dish out some bigger numbers then I just switch to one of my other toons.
So don’t tell me to stop playing a ranger. Get over it, be patient and enjoy one of the many other classes available in the meantime. It really isn’t a big deal..

It doesnt actually apply a regen boon like healing spring, It directly heals people in the area every second (maybe a bit faster).
Not at all as mad as you think. I’ve been using that type of armor setup since I hit 80 weeks ago. My armor pieces are 2 x Rampagers, 1 x Valk, 3 x Zerkers with accessories being 3 x Valk, 1 x Knight and 2x Zerk (incl back piece).
The build I use is a crit-centric beastmastery build. 30 skirm, 5 WS, 15NM & 20BM traiting to add boons, bleeding on hit and high crits to my pet. It leaves me with a high chance to crit & over 18k health. I’ve taken this build into all of the dungeons, using dps pets, and it performs very well.
The DPS is about average for a ranger and ofc relies of a degree of pet management as it will be providing a large amount of your overall dmg. I personally have attack and return mapped to my mouse side buttons with my heal mapped to middle mouse, this helps keep your pet in the fight a lot longer before switching. Before the SB nerf I would consistantly pull aggro off other classes with this build, less so now.
The survivability is top notch and I more often than not find myself picking up my teammates in the case of an almost wipe. If you pack Spirit of Nature and Healing Spring this build and setup is tough enough to run through AoE/mobs and drop emergency healing/revive whilst still keeping up decent dps pressure with the pet. Fantastic for fractals.
Anyway, give it a shot, you won’t regret it.
I think they intentionally missed out the end reward to make the dungeon yet another gold sink. We all know how much they love their gold sinks!
That said the drops are fairly decent. I’m yet to make a loss running that dungeon.
Agreed. This needs tweaking. The random walls take the element of skill out and just make it a frustrating experience for everyone involved.
Just breezed through lvl 2 with a pug after most of my guild went to sleep. Started off a bit rocky but once the more ragey members calmed down and realised they would get better results being NICE to the newer guys rather than berating them for not knowing what to do in a dungeon that had come out that day, things went swimmingly.
The success of a group is a lot more to with patience, clear communication and a positive attitude. Nothing wrecks a pug more than some gear facist that cusses out everyone for making the slightest error and takes no responsibility for thier role in the group.
Yeah it’s annoying. Bring back Read the Wind!
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Read_the_Wind
In fact, bring back preperations in general, they were all pretty useful.
Traps traps traps and more traps, plus a sword with torch or horn. Torch has an AoE fire field and the horn bird call attack works on burrows if my memory serves.
I really enjoy the GW2 style of gameplay. It actually tries something different and bolder than the tired old holy trinity. If you want that style of gameplay there are hundreds of other games you can choose from that stick to that formula. Sure the new mechanics aren’t perfect by a long way but that will only improve with time. By now any gamer worth his/her salt will have played holy trinity style content to death over numerous titles. Why on earth would you want to crush something innovative and engaging and take a developmental step back? You don’t like it? Well that’s tough for you, but hey, you have plenty of other games to choose from that will satisfy your need for the trinity.
I think the OP is better off sticking to the other games that follow the trend he enjoys rather than coming here and trying to change one of the few MMOs that tries to be different. That’s what an intelligent, reasonable person would do. Anyway, I suspect that if he is as clever as he makes out he already knows the devs would never change the core mechanics of the game in such a drastic fashion now. However that does make me wonder what he was thinking when he decided to make this topic in the first place.
Yeah it’s a massive slap in the face really. In GW1 I could pick an item of max stats gear that had a cool looking skin. A worthy reward for your efforts. If they were worried about the gear imbalancing the economy of something they could have made it soul/account bound.
I got trash when I opened my rewards whilst it was bugged. I still haven’t recieved the updated, fixed, bags but if its just lvl 78 greens and up then im really not bothered. Chances are they will be non-exotic, and if they are, won’t be useful for my class. I think I’d even still prefer the old system of picking one reward if the bags all dropped lvl 80 exotics as random chance is rarely kind to me in this game in terms of gear drops and half the point of the old rewards was the cool appearance.
I’m trying to figure out how it would damage gem sales as this is clearly a top priority for Anet. I guess you might feasably spend less gold if you got one piece of perfect gear for free. And because we all buy gems for gold, bit of sarcasm there, that would mean slightly less gem sales. Meh, it doesn’t seem likely.
I’m really at a loss as to why they took this design decision, it benefits nobody.
Bring back the GW1 system Anet!
It wasn’t that humorous. Just weak puns about ranger bugs mixed in with the usual class QQing that is the cancer of this forum.
Started using other weapons and stopped speccing pure glass cannon.
Still loving ranger.
If you could only do well with a SB and Axe/Horn then frankly you lack skill and imagination. Something Guild Wars has always rewarded.
Resetting my router (changing my ip in the process) fixed things for a few hours today. Even managed most of HotW, right up till halfway through the end boss where I got Error 7 disconnected. Then when I reconnected the lag was back and as bad/constant as before. I’m not going to keep resetting my router as that will cause my isp to automatically lower my connection speed and as this is clearly only a problem related to GW2 it’s not worth wrecking my gameplay experience on other games for. Also started getting Code 3032:1002:3:4350:101 disconnects too after the last error 7 disconnect. Sort this kitten out Anet.
It could be unique to him if there werent about a dozen people a day posting about having strange lag issues in this thread (myself included) https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Network-Lag/page/10#post437670 It’s pretty clear Anet borked something with the last update. I’ve had the random lag bug since last friday, started mid-session no less. People have reported different random things fixing it, but with the common theme, temporarily.
I feel your frustration Klazmaunt, it feels like Anet is ignoring this issue at the moment.
Still having massive lag issues & disconnnects, unplayable since friday afternoon. Seafarer’s Rest, playing from UK on BT. Can we have some acknowledgment from Anet that this issue is being resolved?
I’ve been getting random disconnects along with crippling lag spikes since friday afternoon. Not a single problem from release until then. I’m on Seafarer’s Rest, playing from Aberdeen, North East Scotland UK. Quite a few other people reporting similar problems.
Update:
After methodically going through all the diagnostics I could think of I went open a support ticket. Before submitting the ticket a popup window with common general fixes came up. Doing this, fixed the issue for me entirely:
1. Navigate to your Guild Wars 2 installation folder.
2. Right-click on GW2.exe and select Create Shortcut.
3. Rename this shortcut to Guild Wars 2 Repair.
4. Right-click on this shortcut and select Properties.
5. Edit the Target line to include -repair at the end.
Note: Please make sure -repair is outside of the quotes
Correctly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe” -repair
Incorrectly Formatted Example: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2\GW2.exe -repair”
This makes sense as the problem was clearly isolated to the game and not my connection/computer in general. It must be some kind of corrupted game file causing the issue (at least in my case). Give it a shot and post your results here.
Edit: May have spoken too soon. The problem re-emerged after running flawlessly through a few busy events. Again, repair ‘fixed’ it, but only temporarily. Seems like the game is currently actively corrupting itself somehow.

I thought this might resolve itself overnight but sadly the massive spikes continue. Strange this started mid-session yesterday and now it appears I’m stuck with it. Tried everything short of reinstalling the game. Might give that a shot. Still nothing back from Anet so I can only assume they aren’t looking into the problem yet.
Also more people cropping up with the same problem in the last day or two here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Network-Lag/page/9#post428666
And another guy with the same problem here (just to illustrate this isn’t an isolated problem): https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/lag-spikes-and-disconnects/first#post428343

Yes, lately been getting a load of lag spikes. Game is now unplayable.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Bad-game-lag-lately
I get lag when I use wireless and I’d say my connection speeds
are good and all that. Then I change to wired and it’s perfect.
If only it was that simple in my case. I’m wired to my router and this problem is still persisting.
Aye Decently Evil, I wholeheartedly agree with your post. Those small changes alone would make all the difference. As an avid fan of beastmaster builds since the first game I’ve felt pretty annoyed that Anet has not fixed the issues with pets, our core mechanic, already.
I’m on Seafarer’s Rest and for the last 6 hours have suffered massive lag spikes of about 5 seconds. This also occurs in all zones on all characters. Run all the usual checks and it is without a shadow of a doubt a GW2 issue alone (connection is stable, no firewalls, other games performing perfectly etc.). I was able to play fine earlier today and have never encountered any problems with lag since release.
I hope Anet acknowledge they’re looking into the problem, as at the moment the game is unplayable.
