Stealth and why it reduces depth and skill

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rhaps.8540

The gw1Assassin did it right. Shadow stepping gave them huge mobility, they had great control and really powerful offensive/defensive abilities that took finesse and skill to master. Just look at those skills. They still had the power to not be targeted and escape or close faster than any other class and all without the invisibility gimmick.

Stealth by comparison is lazy and boring.

In my opinion, GW2 is dying

Rhaps.8540

What I mean by “dying” simply this: Activity is decreasing. I don’t think really anyone can argue with that.

When your evidence of “decreasing activity” is completely anecdotal…

Yes, yes you can. And the entire discussion will be pointless.

It isn’t anecdotal at all when I have yet to hear someone in a guild that has less than 475 active members saying anything different, at least from my server, anyway.

Anecdotal means you came by the information by casual observation and not rigorous scientific method. Seeing as you could not possibly have access to the data involving past and current guild populations across the whole game then of course it’s anecdotal.

As a matter of fact I mentioned in my previous post that my guild was actually still growing, rapidly. Mine is only a 240 active member guild and I’m not even on the busiest EU server (I’m on Seafarer’s Rest). So my anecdotal experience is the complete opposite of yours. Go figure!

My guild is growing day by day. It’s a f2p game, of course the player turnover is fast. You have to keep actively recruiting to keep a guild alive. Not an indicator the game is dying.

AC is just one dungeon. Its explorer mode used to be too easy, now it’s fun again. I still see huge crowds outside CoF for easymode runs there. That’s where your old AC crowd is now. Not an indicator the game is dying.

I agree about Zhaitan. Still nothing to do with the game dying.

The Living Story still isn’t finished, and I have a feeling the new dungeon content will be a blast. Also the crowds at the Living Story events have been huge with every installment. Not an indicator the game is dying.

PvP isn’t dying. I’ve never not been able to get a match, WvW very often has queues. Like you say Anet is working to balance skills separately which is only going to improve matters. Not an indicator the game is dying.

The UI could do with some more work sure, but it’s only minor issues. Not an indicator the game is dying.

I got one and a half minutes into that video to see that number 10 was complaining that GW2’s advertising wasn’t good. Sadly no sane person could cope with 38 minutes of what has to be my new number 1 in my Top 10 Excrutiatingly Annoying Youtube Presenters You Want To Catch Fire Whilst BBQing video.

As for ES:O. I was very interested until I saw the combat. It looks laughable compared to GW2. Clunky, slow, weapons never connect, slow, players are barely moving, stamina for attacks/blocking, slow, terrible animations… did i mention it’s slow?

Anyway it would be mad to think they aren’t working on optimisation, but I agree the improvements are slow in coming. I expect more soon though.

Why does our greatsword hit three targets?

in Ranger

Posted by: Rhaps.8540

Rhaps.8540

Oh yeah, Guardians the only one that has a skill that hits more than 5 targets with it (minus that whirl thing warriors do)

I tested the warr/mesmer GS skills in the mists AoE targets area and like I said it’s more than just whirlwind attack, bladetrail hits all targets in both directions and there’s the mesmer gs skills I mentioned which comes on top of them recently being given a normal cleave (or pierce if you like) on their #1 attack.

You’re right enough though about the drakes. Providing they’re alive, in position, aren’t stopping to activate their f2 attack and are able to keep up with the target, then yes they can cleave as well giving GS rangers a potential double cleave thing going on which is really nice. Sadly its still reliant on an often unreliable pet. I’ve got big hopes for the upcoming pet fixes.

Ranger Cross-Class Comparison

in Ranger

Nice thread so far.

Traits: Condition Removal from Dodge

  • Ranger: 30 Trait Points, Major Grandmaster Trait, Evasive Purity - Dodging removes blind and poison from you.
  • Elementalist: 20 Trait Points, Major Master Trait, Stop Drop and Roll - Dodge rolling removes burning and chilled.
  • Thief: 20 Trait Points, Major Master Trait, Fleet of Foot - Dodging removes cripple and weakness from you.

I would add “30 Trait Points, Major Grandmaster Trait, Evasive Arcana - Dodging in Water Attunement removes one condition” to the elementalist part.

I thought about that one, but it seems like such a class exclusive trait that I didn’t want to add it. If others think it should though, then I’ll add it.

I noticed it wasn’t included as well and was going to recommend its inclusion. It’s an AoE cleanse on dodge which is so powerful that I think it deserves a mention. It should also be mentioned in the healing category when that starts to be compiled.

Why does our greatsword hit three targets?

in Ranger

Posted by: Rhaps.8540

Rhaps.8540

Um, Ranger GS does have cleave. It’s just Guardian who is the anomaly with that one attack that hits more than the 3-target cleave limit. It’s likely because the skill is considered an ‘AoE’ and not a melee skill.

Big cleave, PBAoE whatever, Ranger doesnt have any skills on GS that break the 3 target limit, other classes do. Guardian is the anomaly? Warrior has whirlwind attack and bladetrail, mesmer has mind stab, illusionary berserker and illusionary wave. All of which hit well over the 3 target limit. Ranger is the anomaly being the only class having no multi-target (3+) skills on GS which brings me back to my original point about pets.

Our lack of blast finishers is also probably due to us meant to be using Drakes for that, but that’s far from ideal as we can’t directly control the attack that triggers them.

I just ran around Gendarran Fields and in 5 minutes saw at least 20 suspicious barrels. All by myself.

Good for you, I do however assure you that this did occur last night. I also had a look now and the barrels are there as normal. Like I said, we’ve done this bounty before numerous times, I’ve got no reason to lie about barrels not spawing as they did normally on those other occasions.

I suspect that barrels aren’t respawing properly which lead to this shortage during server peak times when lots of guilds are running their bounties.

Yeah.

I don’t believe that you could only find 1 single barrel. I think you’re using a bit of hyperbole to try and make a point.

Actually I was leading guild missions last night and encountered the same thing. Normally we find loads, and we’ve downed Sotzz a few times before, but last night I waypointed and ran around for ten minutes solid and only saw one barrel.

There didn’t appear to be any other guilds hunting him at the time and I didn’t see many people running about. Also we’ve done this target before with other guilds hunting and still found plenty of barrels.

It does seem like something is up atm with guild missions. Had trouble starting them since last Thursday, have to rezone to trigger them, and now this?

Why does our greatsword hit three targets?

in Ranger

Posted by: Rhaps.8540

Rhaps.8540

We have pets which can attack a seperate target and can have its own aoe attack. Making it possible for them to hit 5 different targets.

I knew someone was going to bring up pets as an excuse.

The only pets with a spammable AoE attack come from the drake family, and it too only hits 3 targets. It is possible, if you sick your drake on a different target, that you may be able to hit up to 6 targets, but chances are, you’ll wind up overlapping, and only hit 3 targets anyway. Other pets only have AoE attacks on long cooldowns, and some pets have no AoE at all.

Ignoring all of the inherent problems with pets, it is a somewhat valid point, assuming you only use a drake pet and it never dies.

It’s not an excuse, it’s the answer to your title question. Anet balance Ranger around having a pet out, for better or for worse. So that’s why our GS doesn’t have a big cleave. The effectiveness of pets however is a hotly debated topic all of its own.

I’d like to Echo Lord Jim’s comments. I finally managed to get my Rabid set finished off, the only annoying part of this build, and took it WvW. Must say I’ve never had so much fun in WvW as with this build!

Went up 5 ranks in one night and I’m a real amateur at WvW. Solo roaming was able to win a few 2 v1, 3 v1 and even managed to hold out for 5 mins against a 5 v 1. I never lost a single 1 v1 all night. Not something I’ve managed to do on my other classes/builds. When my guardian friend came on and we went duo the boons were insane. We even won a 6 v 2, which for someone inexpeienced at the game mode was pretty suprising! I’d highly recommend this build for less pro mesmer players like myself who have trouble setting up huge shatters in pvp, it’s easy to use and very effective.

This build has great synergy and the support from all the fields, winds of chaos bounces and distracting clones makes it fantastic for small roaming teams.

I used undead runes as im pretty poor, but they seem to do the job well. I’m not all that interested in extra swiftness as I tend to fight till I die anyway, figured it’s better to learn that way for now. I also tried switching sword for scepter with relative success. The block is handy and the channeled confusion stacking, passive confusions stacking from #1 and the clones really helped keep the pressure on when you aren’t being focused. Good for supporting when in a small group.

Thanks for posting this! I hope more people try it out and the build gets the recognition I think it deserves.

Let me get this straight. The OP’s mistake was:
1. Didnt pull slave driver into the wall.
2. Didnt time warp fast enough.
3. Didn’t cast feedback fast enough.

And for that you get kicked? OMG I am so thankful for being in my guild then. I’d have been kicked a hundred times over by such people. I ran several CoF p1 farms recently. We never really did #1, is it really THAT necessary? As for the other 2 points, well, I get that some people want to do fast runs and all but I feel like that just crosses the line. It’s not like the OP didn’t do it at all.

The person that told me all this said we would have saved “about 20 secs” had I done everything perfectly.

The irony is it probably took more than 20 secs to explain that to you. What is so important in these people’s lives that they think that kind of behaviour is acceptable over 20 seconds lost time? Don’t they realise they’re playing an MMO? It’s by definition a total waste of time.

Oh well, let them continue to be delusional sadsacks. Treating people that way must make for a very lonely existance.

The best part of being a Ranger is knowing you arent doing it the easy way. Sure the other classes mock us, people openly claim we can do nothing and contribute nothing but when you are out there in the dungeons picking those same people off the floor or putting them there in the arenas it feels great.

Let them lord it up with their face roll easy classes, guardians im looking at you, they will never be as good as you fellow Rangers. They don’t have to squeeze everything they can out of their class and always be on top of their game just to keep up. Ranger class is hard mode, be proud of that, the rest of them are too scared or too bad to even attempt what you’re doing. They all deleted their Rangers and abandoned the class because they can’t cope, they aren’t up to the challenge and need their training wheels.

Ranger sword too annoying to use?

in Ranger

Posted by: Rhaps.8540

Rhaps.8540

With the1-handed sword in pve I tend to use it as a hit and run. Go in, pop qz or petswap for quickness and dps as much as possible remembering to use your #3 to help you stay longer. Once you get focused and your hp starts to drop, hit #2, jump out and switch back to ranged. You can use an offhand dagger to stay in a bit longer with the extra evade or use the horn or torch to add extra dmg/combo fields/buffs whilst you dive in.

One thing you just cant do with the 1-handed sword in pve is stay in the thick of it for too long. If you want to wade through mobs then greatsword is a much better bet.

I’m just going to go out on a limb and guess you haven’t explored support Rangers well enough.

Those offensive boons ‘splatter’ all over are kitten when having more allies in range make them worse. As for having direct damage and condition aspects with your control, this is nothing new or unique. A warrior can do this. An elementalist can do this. A ranger can do this. I don’t understand why you figure, just because it does direct damage with conditions suddenly means it’s support…not by itself…not by a long shot.

In my perspective, people look too much at what things don’t do and not enough at what they can do. It builds false expectations and perpetuates unjust stigmas. But then none of this really matters, talking about support and whatever…no one needs or wants it anyway so it’s rather moot…had people yell at me in groups, telling me I don’t know how to play my mesmer because I don’t shatter. No duh, because it’s a support mesmer! You give people boons with them and give them retaliation and they’ll soak up hits and shave a bit of HP off enemies!

But hoo, the kill rate is low so it’s nub lolz…am I right?

100% lol

Laugh it up and backslap each other all you like, it doesn’t mean you’re right.

I don’t care how you play your mesmer or how fast you kill. Needless to say I’ve never had any complains from fellow players when playing mine. Direct dmg, conditions and control through stun & immobolise is still better than what the ranger offers. You’re right in mentioning warrior and ele, they can also do this a lot better than the ranger. Other classes offer more buffs, at range, with mobility, consistantly without having to sacrifice as much dps. I think this is unfair on rangers and would like to see it addressed.

You guys however seem happy to bury your heads in the sand and mock anyone who disagrees. Fair enough, maybe you need more time with the class to understand, but I’d drop the fanatical pro-ranger viewpoint. As the vast majority of the posters in this thread have already realised, rangers need work to be brought in line with the other classes. Even the devs have said as much. No amount of wise-cracking comments on your part is going to change that.

I’m out of this thread now, my time is better spent discussing the class with people who understand the reality of the situation.

But bring a beserker shatter mesmer to a group, I’m not seeing that being a huge supporter and I’d even go on a limb and say a support Ranger will out-support one, contrary to popular belief.

I still feel I bring less to the table with a support ranger than I do on my mesmer. The thing with the mesmer is even when they arent specced to support they still splatter boons all over the place as part of their offensive setup. As you know a lot of the skills I listed have a direct dmg/condition aspect to them too so whilst the boons on their own may not be hugely impressive when you combine the fact that the same skills are applying control effects and dps to enemies at the same time it makes it clear how much more useful mesmers are.

I’d love to see some improvements to ranger support options to balance this kind of thing out more. Off the top of my head something like Nature’s Renewal also being an AoE kd or healing spring also acting like a pulsing AoE cripple (to simulate the wet ground around it like muddy terrain skill). I’m just sptiballing there, but i think you get what I mean

Same argument as Rangers bring nothing to the group.

Uh no. They bring less to the group though. Something I’d like to see changed in a class I love.

I was actually originally pointing out you clearly know nothing about Mesmers so you probably shouldn’t make unfounded claims about them as it makes your arguments look weak. See the part of your post I quoted.

I play my ranger more than all of my other classes but im still under no illusions about their relative effectiveness. Leave your assumptions about where I’m coming from at the door mate as you clearly fail to grasp that we are actually on the same side here. We both love Rangers and believe in the class. I however am willing to actually concede that they have shortcomings compared to the other classes rather than doggedly flying in the face of all evidence and dismissing all criticism off hand.

I play a beastmaster crit build in all game modes. I do fractals, dungeons, wvw the lot and I do it well. I don’t have an issue keeping pets alive, I understand our dps comes from a combination of ranger and pet, I know how to use the rooting 1-handed sword etc, etc, etc, plus I’ve never called the ranger a bad class.

The reason I posted is because I felt you were doing more damage than good. If you are going to be a spokesman for the class and a vocal proponent for our effectiveness then it would help if you had a clue what the other classes could do too. Something your mesmer comment clearly demonstrated you don’t.

Not a very good list, Rhaps.

For one, winds of chaos, siren’s call, such bouncing skills don’t give vigor, might, fury and swiftness. They give vigor, might, fury OR swiftness. They are random boons that may or may not last very long and boons/conditions from illusions aren’t affected by your duration %. So extra boons from them often are very short lived along with being random.

Illusion of Life is likely the worst revive skill as it can thwart other attempts to revive in progress and can fail to do anything but put your ally in an instant dead state. Phantasmal Disenchanter is abysmal and slow. If it ever removes any of your conditions, those conditions have likely taken their toll regardless. Null field does’t quite cure all conditions, it cures conditions per pulse so you have to stay in the field while it works.

…but yeah, a Mesmer can certainly support well. With its toolbag of CC and phenomenal traits, you can passively give allies regeneration via phantasms, you can heal people around you from casting mantras, you can remove boons and Phantasmal Defender can cut damage by 50% of those hit within its range. I’d even say mesmer, when specc’ed for it are probably the 2nd or 3rd best support there is.

What? There’s nothing wrong with the list. It’s a list of skills that mesmers have that offer support to a group, not a discussion about how effective they are. If I’d omitted skills that offered support then it wouldn’t be a complete list, and then it would be a bad list.

I know they dont grant all those boons at the same time, but they could if they hit 1 player repeatedly, the mesmer traits for extra bounce, has swiftness on or there is more than one mesmer in the group. The effectiveness of phantasmal disenchanter does not stop it from still being counted as a skill that offers support, same goes for null field which is still actually a brilliant skill. Illusion of life is very situational and mostly rubbish, ill grant you that, but if im making a list of support skills I still have to include it.

Regaurdless of all that it still offers better support than my ranger. And I say that as an avid ranger supporter and player.

Anyway, im glad you still agree with what im saying in the end. Makes me wonder why you felt the need to try and pick apart the list in the first place.

Mesmers bring damage and conditions no support at all.

I quite liked that you were trying your best to stick up for the class and I see your heart is in the right place so to speak, but when you make statements like that you really lose all credability.

Here is a list of mesmer skills that support allies:

mirror blade – gives allies might
winds of chaos – gives allies might & fury
chaos storm – gives allies swiftness, aegis & retaliation
temporal curtain – gives allies swiftness
phantasmal warden – protects allies from projectiles
phantasmal mage – gives allies retaliation
sirens call – gives allies might, vigor & swiftness
spinning revenge – gives retaliation to allies
feedback – reflects projectiles back at target and away from your team
null field – cures all condtions on allies
veil – grants stealth to allies
illusion of life – revives allies
phantasmal disenchanter – removes conditions on allies
signet of inspiration – copys your boons to allies
mass invisibility – gives allies stealth
time warp – gives allies swiftness

And thats missing out the countless control skills that blind, transform, stun & immobilise enemies or skills such as portal that allow the mesmer to help an entire team past a tricky obstacle.

Carry on defending the class, sure. But don’t speak of things you clearly have no clue about, it only weakens your cause.

Why are you running Signet of the Hunt and Agility Training?

Aye Carnivorous Appetite or Companion’s Might would be better options imo.

1 celestial and 1 abyss since launch. Got the celestial on day 5. Used it ofc
Sold the abyss dye as it utterly obilterates any detail on my armour, it’s too dark. If you want a good shade of black that still leaves the details I recommend charcoal dye.

Very good point medazolam… I didn’t even think of that… I guess farmers switched to sab for the time being… I guess that could explain it…

Aye, i was thinking the same as i read through the thread. The most simple answer to the question of why it’s contested more would be less people are running CoF runs.

A timer change is not outside the realms of possibility, but I think it’s far less probable.

Chest Loot Timer, anti-melee or just dumb?

in Super Adventure Box

Posted by: Rhaps.8540

Rhaps.8540

So it’s not anti-melee but if you melee you need smart usage of utilities and dodges while ranged guys can just faceroll?
I guess that sounds about right.

faceroll? My poor low level engineer would disagree with you. Every time the chess spawns enemies like for example snakes I’m dodging left and right because one hit equals half my health gone.
Have all classes here. 6/8 level 80s. Personally I found that the most movement requiring ones are elementalist and thief, warrior and guardian normally can take a hit.

Actually I was just asking for a clarification.

To clarify, ranged is not faceroll. Ranged attacks do less dps (longer fight) and they also have to dodge/kite or cc the mobs to do it otherwise they’re in melee too.

You never played ranged before or something?

Positive Side to Being a Ranger.

Remember that the next time someone calls your Ranger kitten

Classes

in Players Helping Players

Rhaps.8540

Theif/Necromancer can do well if the person playing them knows what they are doing and can be same as other professions, even if they are not the most popular. Engineers can do very well with a dedicated player as well although they take a little more work to get where other professions are. The only profession which truly is not going to be able to beat others no matter how hard they try is Ranger, as they just don’t have the tools to do well as they rely on pets to take damage for them which doesn’t work well in any kind of pvp and they are also legendarily bad in dungeons as well as they don’t offer any kind of good teamwork skills. Quite literally Ranger is the worst profession possible.

As someone who plays Ranger as well as the ‘godly’ classes I can say that there is a lot of exaggeration going on here. Ranger currently has issues with pet AI requiring improvement, and as pets constitute half of their dps this can hurt a lot at times. They also need improvement to their traitlines and utils, especially spirits.

What Rangers do have is: great combat mobility, the only permanent pet in the game that can dish out some impressive dps (if you can keep it alive, which means some serious microing atm), the ability through pets to offer a huge range of buffs/conditions both single target and AoE, decent AoE healing and cleansing abilities for support and some fantastic skirmishing weapons through the shortbow/sword/gs which help it perform well in 1v1 pvp situations.

You will have no issue with dungeons if you are in any way a half decent player although it wont be as face-roll easy as other classes due to keeping your pet alive being a bit of an art in itself at the moment. The Devs have had a recent discussion with the Ranger community and already started addressing this with some gradual changes (increased ability to hit moving targets, pets share agony resistance).

All in all it’s a more challenging class than it should be right now, but if you like a challenge you can succceed. I know from personal experience you will kill plenty of people in wvw/spvp and will manage all of the dungeon content, you just have to work a bit harder for it at times. People forget this is much more a game of skill anyway. A good Ranger player will still be better than a rubbish Mesmer player.

It’s sort of a running theme for people to hate on Rangers atm, but if its a class type you enjoy and you’re good at pet micro then give it a shot.

I’d say go for Mesmer, strong and in demand for all game types (pvp & pve) due to their unique utilities and class mechanics. A very strong all-rounder.

Rhaps.8540

I mean…I remember playing PvE with a ranger and it took a while to actually hit triple digit numbers using certain skills while a warrior was able to hit four digit damage numbers early on.

This could be solved by merging the display of pet dmg and ranger dmg. We don’t see big numbers early on because our dps is split with a pet and our class is balanced around that.

That said, there definately needs to be some meaningful improvements to the traits, worthless utils and poor pet AI to get the class up to par with the others.

Worst Clipping. Ever

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rhaps.8540

Actually the best thing to do is report it. I’ve reported numerous armour/weapon clipping issues and they have nearly all been fixed. Anet for some reason don’t publish these changes in their patch notes but I can ssure you they happen.

If you have a favourite armour set that suffers clipping issues drop a report with a screenshot through the in-game menu. The more people report it the faster it will get fixed.
