new nvidia beta driver 320.49

the version before 320.49 – people on the net were complaining about how the card was overheating and causing the system to act erratic. Now I did notice that 320.49 had a compatibility test included and I did not get the same control panel as I did in 320.18 – so I’m guessing from this, that they issued some incompatible code that were causing some systems to fail – chances are because of varying motherboards. Now I don’t know if the current control panel is just a beta thing and in the final release they will return it to the prior one. Nvidia says that a clean install is no longer necessary and if anything it removes prior settings, so you’d have to redo any custom configurations on your system – but I went ahead and did a clean install anyways to remove any old files in my system – so far I’ve noticed the card run more stable – at one point in the last version my computer was overheating and shutting down literally over 5 times a day – and that is not happening anymore. I’m still getting massive lag spikes in GW though, and I strongly suspect ( would even dare go as far as saying I’m positive ) that the GW2 event dragon bash added some bad code – I say this because I almost finished my monthly in 2 days – yet the current gw2 performance makes it inconceivable to even try as my wvw performance is horrid.

I’m still waiting to see if microsoft issues any new patches lately because I also highly suspect this is a multi part problem – again with drivers for motherboards – I remember watching my system performance degrade right after I installed new / updated drivers from intel. – really frustrates me that windows says it has no new drivers before and after I installed updated drivers from intel…like whats up with that microsoft …any mobo driver is the best driver for my system ?!

I must admit that I am also disappointed in Anet as I watch people start countless threads about buying new systems …and not only does Anet not chime in to give advice on what a good system for gw2 is , they are rather nonchalant about giving us details on what could possibly causing this and plays the ‘crazy making’ game telling people it’s their system or isp while others are showing clear evidence their connections are fine.

seriously, if there’s a problem at least let us know so we don’t waste time and money looking for solutions that don’t exist. I’m a big fan of gw since it first came out ..but this doesn’t feel like the team that created the original gw – sorry guys, I tried hard to look at all sides of this argument to be fair …your lack of participation in the “help me build a computer” threads shows how much you really don’t care as you let everyone guess a new build…when their computers might actually be fine, as if you are letting everyone pay for your bad code.

learning a lot from this thread too lol. nice conversation guys.

Question – wouldn’t you want to make the mb the most important part of your computer ? graphics cards / chips constantly upgrade – but the mobo is the foundation of a good upgradeable build ?

Giving everyone a heads up, Nvidia issued a new beta driver yesterday 320.49 I installed it, noticed a small improvement, nothing big…but looks like it helped a little.

cpu looks pretty low on the benchmark list and for the same price of that cpu you can get better performance from a higher performing cpu – http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

One site I’ve been having fun lately is with http://www.ibuypower.com/2013/july4th.aspx

I’ve been looking for different rigs myself lately, while most people don’t like that benchmark page because it’s based on using all threads of a cpu, and gw2 doesn’t use all the threads – I use software other than gw2 that can make good use of it…further …the benchmark list gives you a very nice over view of price vs performance. Some of the higher up cpu’s are relatively low priced considering how some of the lower performing cpu’s carry a hefty price tag. anywho – sharing what I’ve found so far. – good luck .

But with all the headline news lately, I have to admit that the thought crossed my mind if that prism / nsa/snowden project is also affecting us since they are tapping major lines on the internet. heh! Unlikely….but……..

it’s no secret that the game needs more optimization, but there’s been a wave of failure on the net recently not limited to guildwars, last adobe update has been running like crap, nvidia’s forums is blowing up with problems and complaints, my graphic software unrelated to gw2 have been running slower had 2 people i know computers crap out after the last 2 updates, one of which was right after she updated her machine ….whether other games run perfectly for you is irrelevant if the error thats affecting my computer and gw2, is coming from microsoft. Your computer may simply have more tolerance for it, but you still feel it more in gw2 = we all do…..so imagine how bad my and everyone elses game is running if your’s is running so poorly.

still worth it though, software will eventually evolve ……when they do take advantage of the additional threads then its like a free upgrade lol – so for long term I still like that chip – everything above that seems to be a small increase and not really worth it. although some of them have some advanced technologies in them. but I guess those will lower in price as we figure out how to make quantum computers heh ….. to think in 5 years the highest specs now will look like a beeper :x

@Ilithis – for the extra $200, the 3930k can be overclocked to match the fastest cpu out now…which isn’t bad. I’m using this chart as a reference http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

while the lower price looks appealing – i personally would rather go higher for more longevity in the system especially since it’s only 200 dollars more. It’s how I did this system, it’s getting old now …and needs to be updated soon, but it was cutting edge when I bought it ….and 6 years later still holding up. – I’m really feeling that asus extreme 2 board though, the stats on that thing are sick!!! http://www.asus.com/ROG_ROG/RAMPAGE_II_EXTREME/

I may approach my next computer like an upgrade, just buy motherboard and cpu …and transfer everything else from current computer – then upgrade over time. to keep costs down without having to compromise much.

this is the highest performing cpu according to benchmarks under $1,000

Intel Core i7-3930K @ 3.20GHz
list price – $583.00

this is the board you get for it…
ASUS Rampage II Extreme Republic of Gamers – Motherboard
List Price: 409

you only need 4 gigs of ram because gw2 is 32 bit. – corsair

and everyone is raving about a solid state drive.

then you need a good cooling system, for the cpu since you may have to overclock it.
about another 150

a case …about 100 – depending on what you want.

a 650+ watt powersupply

you don’t need an ubber video card, so you can go with a GTX 460 for 100 or titan for 1.2k

well, no, but the logic behind that is ….if I can use gw2 as a benchmark, chances are most other pro level 3D softwares will run phenomenal. I can run them now …so it’s really using gw2 as a benchmark since I know of only one other software that can be this resource heavy on a pc – Hitfilm. – that program right thur has the power to turn your computer into a toaster oven – put a slice of bread in your cd drive and toast it!! – the 3D software I’m using, iclone , renders in real time, just like a video game and you can load up as many poly’s as your system and any future system can handle. So the faster the system, the more real time detail you can add. – of these 3 gw2 is the only one that’s fixed in size. so it’s a good benchmark.

honestly, I would love for a wvw developer to post the specs of the computers they use and their resulting fps. I don’t think it will be possible to go beyond their specs for better performance. If they settled at say 40 fps in wvw …going for 60+ may be a myth. Would be nice to have this info as a reference to build a new pc.

Microsoft is also suspect here ya know….I’m on a completely unrelated 3D software forum that’s just as resource heavy, and one of my friends computer just got boinked by microsoft updates …… Including another friend that had to send her new computer back to replace the board last week because it was overheating the cpu….. It makes me wonder if these recent microsoft updates are affecting our systems, adobe / nvidia and gw2 – microsoft is no angel and they have the ability to throw all these softwares out of whack with a bad update!! they’ve done it to me before.

nah, it’s as ok – at least as ok as it can be with the rash of bad updates from nvidia and adobe ( they are also having issues with shockwave flash effecting performance on browsers ) ..

my system didn’t crash, but I saw cursor get extremely choppy which made it clear to me just how taxing gw2 was behaving. I didn’t freeze, but the system was obviously being overwhelmed with gw2. It’s that same behavior when you run motion blur real time on fx software – which is why some video editing software offer the option to keep it offline till you are ready to render, they know it’s going to tax the system and cause massive lags.

I think I found the problem , at least on my end – I read in another post about setting the priorities on the task manager to high for gw2. I did that and instantly saw my FPS increase , but then my system was running unstable – my cpu is 3.2mhz …and it’s not enough lol – apparently the event content is taxing the system even more than usual. – So it looks like everyone suffering this lag issue will have to deal with it until the event is over. From the overall look of things, anet isn’t capable of optimizing the software any time soon and they have plans to run these event’s every month. It’s game over…at least for me.

I have mixed feelings about that myself. Truth is Right now I can’t play at all, and a few months ago, while it wasn’t perfect at least I was still playing.

So as much as I’m trying to be supportive for anet – there is a fine line of enduring an imperfect game …vs …you mean I can’t play for a few months till they fix it ? It was just working!!!

so I wish there was a way they could do open beta test servers before releasing it and finding out 1/5th of your audience can’t play anymore.

I appreciate anet, I am very happy that they survived the cut backs and have a sustainable model. But consider our side too. I can’t play anymore…period.

if there are cut backs …and trimming of budgets…it’s not unreasonable to consider that they did something to cut back costs on the servers and it resulted in lag. Maybe they got pushed into a kmart internet situation for survival reasons ? – “Here’s a 96k modem…make it happen” ?

i’m considering my experience from doing a research project with fbx and 3D software ….fbx is a popular format ..but in order to get the latest sdk for it the companies have to pay a license fee…as a result, very few 3D companies have the latest fbx version ( which changes every year and a I think new license has to be obtained to update to stay current ). Now I can be all for pushing, but I want to give Anet the benefit of the doubt and understand their side of it ….. is nVidia running some sort of illuminati game on our fav developers!! That original message posted on this thread did sound pretty harsh for a pro rep – it was very “Hey, we gave em a discount on our extortion rate and they didn’t want it” lol

I mean think about it, nVidia is a dominant graphics card in most computers, they could if they wanted to , break someones software 1nce a month and charge outrageous fees to fix it. GW2 did run good at one point, it’s hard to believe Anet would break that just because they added a few events. ….adding a new 3D model causes the computer to become unstable ? – not likely. #3DGate

theoretically speaking it might be possible to reach gw2 nirvana – ironically enough with a few mac’s – this is one feature that mac has a great advantage over pc on power – you can link up mutiple macs together to get more cpu power. – I know that Apple logic pro has that feature – for creating more real time audio processing power. – now if that code is available to the general public is another question. – I wonder if that is possible for window’s pcs – sort of like a render farm.

I give it some credibility, because my system fan was acting erratic and i was crashing quite a bit, back on 314 it’s still not running it’s best with gw2 but obviously more stable. At one point I literally had to keep my portable fan facing the cpu to keep it from shutting down.

Just bumping this thread so everyone is aware there is ‘in fact’ an issue with Nvidia’s latest drivers.

There have been a few posters on the Nvidia sites saying that this driver has actually burned out some video cards and causing systems to overheat …

While this may not fix the game at the moment, I’m hoping that making this information known – you can take precautions that could possibly save your system from getting damaged from recent Nvidia drivers.

- back in the day, we use to farm laurels, daily, for months at a time just to get ascended gear at 1-5fps, we’d overheat our cpu’s and crash our computers ….barefoot….and we loved it!! -cough-

I’m also having problem with extremely slow loading, it pauses on the still image between maps for a very long time and 5fps with complete freezes once I’m in.
GW2 has run fairly well for me in beta and at launch, so I don’t think it’s because I didn’t upgrade my system every patch lol.

I’m starting to suspect this goes deeper than just a video card and more to do with CPU and motherboard drivers – reason I say this is – from various other (non gw2 ) gamer posts – 2 people can have the same card but different results – when my system started freezing up – it felt more like a hardware error than a software error – The kind when you plug a slow or bad drive in a usb and your whole system freezes while it tries to read the drive. Add to this a popular complaint is that the cpu was working harder / overheating – My system was shutting down like crazy before I rolled back.

Apparently the recent GW2 Lag issues ‘might’ be a combination of problems.

NVidias last driver 320.18 seems to be causing troubles in all games…

I went back a few versions, and my fps got more stable but not better. Meaning, in 320.18 – It was 1-2fps …and it would lock up /freeze ( but not crash ) for like 15 seconds at a time.

After I rolled back, to version 314 – it was 2-5fps – would lock up / freeze for 5 seconds at a time – so It’s an improvement but 5fps is still a problem.

Some are suggesting the last stable nvidia release is 310 – I have not tested it yet, but I can say that at one time – particularly beta – GW2 was running well… but progressively got worse and worse.

GW2 and the Nvidia driver issue seem to have one thing in common – It works fine for some people, while others with strong gaming systems are having major issues.

Check the comments section of the Driver page at Geoforce – http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/nvidia-geforce-320-18-whql-drivers-released

I guess to further analyze from here you would have to compare who is having fps issues with non Nvidia cards to compare how much of this bug is coming from either Nvidia or GW2.

edit – it should also be noted that the recent Nvidia drivers ( possibly newest intel MB drivers also ) have been causing system cpus to run hot and shut down. People have been posting about similar issues from game sites, as well as a 3D / animation software site I’m a part of. My system has also been shutting down a lot in recent weeks – but I thought this may have had to do with failing fans / dusty cpu / hot weather. – after going back in driver – my system has been acting more stable.

Why many people are no longer playing GW2?

when you spend more time censoring people complaining about a problem, than fixing the problem…thats a problem. I’m honestly shocked to see that cheaters and exploiters get more privileges than people voicing their views. it makes me feel like investors who don’t play matter more than players who do pay.
