Having that sense of “Don’t screw up or it’s hard to get back to where you are” adds a level of perceived challenge to dungeons that are otherwise obscenely easy and unrewarding. I think it’s a good thing.

The thing that blows my mind is that sometimes dungeons are set up specifically to encourage the players to skip certain parts. Every time I play TA explorable, I get the not-so-insane feeling that certain parts were meant to be skipped just by how the terrain is setup and what the enemies’ attacks are. I think skipping in TA is about the only thing that makes the dungeon fun! This is true for lots of other places too, like the gauntlet after GL in Arah p2 where you run to the next WP.

I hope they don’t get rid of the ability to skip just because some people complain about it. I love the running mechanics in this game.

Rising Dusk.2408

Heya,

Hrmmm… This could work, but there are a few bits of information that you should probably provide! Firstly, are you on a server currently or have you not chosen one yet (ie. brand new player)? Secondly, are you living in a region of the world closer to North America or Europe? Those will help guild recruiters figure out whether or not you are a good fit!

If you’re thinking of an NA server, then VZ might be a good fit! I will preface this that you seem quite interested in high-end PvE content with a bit of WvW in there, and that is pretty consistent with my guild, VZ, and what we do. I’m also 25 and an avid gamer myself, so we have a fair bit in common there to boot. That said, VZ is a medium-sized PvX guild on the Stormbluff Isle server. We do dungeon runs nightly, and have a fair few dungeon masters amongst our ranks. We also run Fractals a fair bit (though I will note we primarily run higher levels). We have guild bounties weekly for those lovely commendations, and are working our way to guild rushes for even more. I am also a commander in WvW, and lead periodically when interest is there. We play primarily in the EST timezone, and on weekdays in the evening, though weekends we play all day long. I also want to note that if you’re a brand new player, most of us don’t run around the wilderness; we’re primarily an end-game guild doing end-game things (and making gold!). To that end, we’d be happy to answer any questions you have as you level up and get accustomed to the game, I just don’t think you’d find anyone to adventure with as you level up your characters (most of us solo level).

If any of that sounds good, check VZ out! You can read more about the guild from the link in my signature, and if you have any questions let me know however you see fit and I’ll get back to you quickly. I hope to hear from you!

Regardless, good luck finding a solid guild that fits your needs.

What class should I use for fractals?

Rising Dusk.2408

The posters in this thread are by no means an indication of the greater community. Whenever I do pug, I have never been turned down on my Necromancer or kicked out. I agree that it is the ‘easiest’ to find a group as a Guardian because most groups get to 4/5 and go “crap we need a Guardian”, but I don’t necessarily think that should bottleneck the OP into choosing their guardian only to progress.

What I recommend is to progress whichever class you are the most capable with / want to play in the content, but never enter the fractals yourself. That way you can switch to your Guardian, which hopefully you will have gotten some AR for by the time you need it, when necessary. This versatility (the ability to switch as needed) makes players that much more valuable. I may main my Necromancer in Fractals because I know what it can do, but I always carry my Guardian and other classes in the wings for when they are needed in a pinch.

What class should I use for fractals?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Rising Dusk.2408

People underestimate Thieves and Necromancers heavily in fractals. Both have very valuable roles in stealth/blind/offensive support. You’ll never move as fast in the Dredge fractal as you can with a Necromancer and a Thief, for instance, one to strip permanent Protection in an aoe, and one to solo stealth the parts that call for it. Fractals is not about bashing your face into the brick wall that is enemies all the time, and it rewards thinking outside the box. These classes may be harder to play well, but are extremely rewarding to the team that utilizes their talents.

Furthermore, Warriors may be nice, but they’re not required for any run to be smooth or as fast as possible. In my opinion, I will bring any class that is played well to L48 (or L79 if progressing). They are all meaningful when played effectively. Even Rangers have their share of valuable roles, such as Entangling the Grawl boss, or other such stuff. Pets getting AR is very valuable in high level fractals, because the dang pet can tank certain bosses fairly well.

tl;dr: Play what you want, and if you play it well you will be valuable.

Why can we attack Gates?

in WvW

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

People that are new to WvW have short attention spans :\ . As soon as they realize there is nothing to do but stand and wait, they’ll be running off to another section of the map or chasing / wiping.

While it is annoying when people PvD when you don’t want them to, it would be even worse if half your group splits off. Personally, I prefer the people with me attack the door than run off. But then again, I usually don’t have that many people with me to begin with.

See, this is something I considered. Maybe being able to attack the gate is there just to keep people busy while sieging so they don’t wander off. Even so, in my groups, I’d much rather people burn down enemy invaders attempting to get inside the location than attack the gate. I’d also much rather then spread out so as to avoid getting ravaged by ACs and the like. People just really love attacking the gate, and swarm to it. I’m not quite sure exactly which I’d prefer.

Your group is fine for content that is, admittedly, easy once you learn it. The challenge is the learning. Kohler (the ghost guy you refer to in AC), is a one-trick pony, but he has a painful trick if you’re unaware of it. His spin-to-win has a clear wind-up, and the pull can be dodged. Dodging will be the real savior of every run with your group; you’ll find CM arguably harder than AC based on your current group composition. You can’t just rush in and smash the enemies’ faces in and win; you’ll need to pick targets, burn them down, and be situationally aware so that you know when to dodge the big hits. Also, make sure you pack lots of stunbreaks on every character in AC; it will save your life more than you may realize.

Good luck!

Recruiting....how can I get it to work?

in Guilds

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

Starting a guild is tough, especially because free transfers have ended. I was reading your original post and thinking up lots of good things to say, but as I read further in the thread I find that Aye has already covered basically everything I would’ve said. Seriously, that post is good. (/wave!!) I will, however, reiterate a few details I think are critical to successfully expanding your player base in a healthy way.

You need to know what you’re looking for in a member, and what you intend to offer players as a guild. This includes upgrades, content you play, social aspects, and so on. It’s challenging finding people on your server to join what with free transfers having ended, but it makes it a lot easier to recruit from within because people are more willing to give it a shot than risk 1800 gems to transfer and be disappointed. I also definitely recommend browsing the forum and looking for people who fit the bill. For my recruiting, I target people who have intelligible and thoughtful opening posts, who are looking primarily for PvE content with a smattering of WvW, people in the EST time zone primarily, and people who seem open to being chatty. That’s specific, and needless to say I don’t increase my guild’s ranks by more than 1-2 every week or so, but I think it results in a better guild.

I also want to discuss something else I think is important: critical mass. Critical mass for a guild is that point where a guild can basically take care of itself. Where people can get on and talk to each other and have fun and they want to represent without you, the leader, being online. Reaching that point should be your goal as a guild leader, because at that point you don’t have to worry so much about it collapsing or falling apart. At that point you’ll also start to see a lot more influence flow in so you can get those upgrades to offer new members. This point is also where people will ask their friends to join, and you start getting players fitting your guild perfectly without having to do nearly as much work as you might otherwise.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to invite people and lose people. Sometimes the fit isn’t perfect even though you thought otherwise, and sometimes the player just finds themselves wanting something else due to maybe time zone changes or what-have-you. Don’t burn bridges, and always be upbeat and kind. It pays off, and makes your guild much more pleasing a place to be in the end.

No matter what, though, good luck with your guild! I hope it works out for you, and if it doesn’t, don’t be afraid to look for a good guild that you can fit into well. They exist, I swear.

Looking for Guild on Stormbluff Isle

in Guilds

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

Hey, wow, talk about coincidence!

[VZ] is a medium-sized PvX guild on the Stormbluff Isle server, your home world! It’s also amazing that your primary interests involve dungeons and fractals, because that’s where our primary interests as a guild are as well. We also run dragon events periodically when they fit between dungeon runs, and I am a WvW commander that leads periodically if that interests you any (nothing super serious guild-wise, but I encourage people to come along!). I also want to note that most players in the guild are in the EST time zone, and work full time (myself included). As a result, we’re on evenings EST on weekdays, but all day or so weekends. I am personally L50 FotM and always looking for 48 runs, and there are several others in the guild that, if they’re on, I can have tag along for a mostly private group (runs much smoother).

You can also read more about the guild in the recruitment post linked in my signature below if you’d like. If any of that sounds interesting to you, please let me know! You can contact me here, in the guild thread, in-game by mail / whisper, by PM on forums, or whatever suits you. I’d be happy to hear from you and your friend (both are welcome!).

Regardless of how this turns out, I hope you and your friend find what you’re looking for in a guild. It’s a great thing to have!

Rising Dusk.2408

I’m not sure how big a guild you’re looking for, but I figure I’ll pitch in because your opening post sounds really good and really aligns with what my guild is seeking in players.

[VZ] is a medium-sized, PvX guild on the Stormbluff Isle server. We have guild bounties unlocked and do them every Wednesday night. We are primarily PvE, but I am also a commander in WvW and lead on weekends and on weekdays time permitting. Most of us have careers and work a lot during the week, so we’re primarily active on evenings EST weekdays, but all day on weekends. We have many dungeon masters in the guild, and many players who run high-level fractals as well if that interests you. When we run a dungeon, we really don’t care what class or setup you bring, we only ask that you be willing to listen to feedback and be willing to learn if you don’t know the ins and outs of a particular run. We’re more than happy to help people who want to learn as well. Lastly, I want to mention that we’re 100% drama-free, which is (really!!) good for me, but seems to be something you were particularly interested in as well.

If you’d like to know more, check out the link to the guild’s recruitment post in my signature below. Also, feel free to contact me if you’d like to chat or would like to ask any sort of specific questions. I respond to all contact via PMs, whispers, in-game mail, or what-have-you. I hope to hear from you!

Regardless of what transpires, however, I hope that you find what you’re looking for in a guild. It goes a long way to making the game more enjoyable.

Why can we attack Gates?

in WvW

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, and I wanted to bring the discussion to the forums in case others have some valuable insight on the matter.

Everyone knows that we cannot attack or damage walls by throwing our spells at them or auto-attacking them or whatever. We have to use siege like Catapults or Trebuchets to do damage to them. Okay, that’s cool. However, we can attack gates, and this means that we can contest locations either intentionally or unintentionally (in the case of a member of a zerg not listening and attacking it randomly). This brings about its fair share of facts associated with it. Note that I don’t want to pass judgment until these facts are laid bare:

  • You can contest a location by attacking the gate
  • You can burn down gates without putting any siege up if your zerg is large enough

Now the question I have to ask is, why can we attack the gates at all? What does it actually do that benefits the game format at all? I see the value in having someone intentionally contest points with an attack to “fake” an attack and misdirect enemies. That’s valuable. I can also see it as a means to prevent players from using the WP at a keep by simply attacking the gate really fast. Maybe it gives the untrained masses something to do while sieging if you’re PvDooring. On the flipside, sometimes you’re setting up a siege and don’t want to alert the enemy to your presence, but a random member of your zerg doesn’t listen to you and wails on the gate, contesting it before siege is placed. It also tends to distract bad players because “omg must attack gate” and they don’t pay any attention to chat and thus attacks from behind. Furthermore, being able to attack gates encourages PvDoor, and takes players’ attention away from other players, placing and using siege, and other sorts of behavior we want to encourage.

I’ve been trying to think of a WvW without being able to attack gates, and honestly, I think it’d be pretty cool. I might not like the lack of misdirection because that’s pretty nifty, but similarly I think it would help guide bad players to paying more attention to what matters in WvW (fighting players, holding chokepoints, and so forth), which is definitely not PvDooring. That would be a good thing.

What do you all think?

There is room for all of these things, and the teams working on all of these things are different.

ANet is not hurting the progress on other fronts by having events like the SAB. There is no downside to them continuing to work on it; au contraire, it enables players who like exploring and platforming and being rewarded for it to have something to enjoy too at long last!

You need at least 3 players to progress certain fractals, though you seem to have that. The early levels are incredibly easy, and although you should expect it to take longer due to both having fewer players than 5 and being lower leveled, you can certainly succeed given good player skill. I imagine you could make it to level 9 without much trouble, though you’ll probably want a fifth player once bosses start inflicting agony at 10 (though it isn’t strictly necessary). Team damage mitigation goes a long way.

You know what they say: misery loves company. More often than not people waste thousands of gold in the forge and get nothing. Then, someone comes along and says “Hey guys look what I got last night sweet!” and it makes them feel terrible. RNG is RNG, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s frustrating, saddening, and demoralizing when RNG hates you and likes someone else. No one likes a thread where someone complains about their luck just as no one likes a thread where someone brags about it. The former is whining when you knew what you were getting into, and the latter is boisterous and achieves nothing besides showing off your luck. How you interpret that showing off is up to you; I find it atrocious that such braggarts get praise or are treated like they’re special, but you apparently like to smile at their fortune.

And yes, one can definitely brag about zero-skill endeavors. People like to feel good about themselves, so they show off what they have achieved through luck like it actually means something. That is exactly why this thread is bad news.

I’ll definitely contact you in-game! I’m not sure how the title works (whether you need them all at once, or if having had them at any point is good enough). Thanks for being helpful in this regard!

(Sorry I didn’t respond sooner, SAB stole my heart!)

Lost Shores

The most rewarding end chest the game has ever seen, and may ever see again. SAB is really boss in its own right, but the Lost Shores rewards did wonderful things to the market in my opinion. No matter how you slice it, it’s fun getting an exotic drop, and outside of Lost Shores there just isn’t much of it.

Oh, jeez, you had so many posts and so many PMs sent to you! I don’t know if you’ll even see this, but I figured I’d try anyway.

[VZ] is an active, medium-sized PvX guild on the Stormbluff Isle server primarily playing evenings in the NA east coast time zone and of course all day on weekends. I regularly run around WvW and command there periodically; I’d say most people know me, though I’m by no means the most active because of my full time job and other things in GW2 I enjoy. Our guild does dungeon runs every night, and fractals when people are interested. We have many dungeon masters in the guild and FotM 48+ players (including me!). I run fractals for those lovely skins all the time, so hit me up if you’re interested. Furthermore, we do guild bounties every Wednesday at 9PM EST and are very near to getting Guild Treks unlocked.

If any of this sounds interesting, contact me by whatever means suits you (in-game / mail / PM / post in guild thread / whisper / etc). You can read more about the guild in the link in my signature if you’d like. I hope to hear from you!

Regardless how this turns out, I want you to know that I hope you find what you’re looking for in a guild. Having a good guild helps a lot with enjoying the game!

The only lag they get is when they freeze in terror as we wipe their zergs!! Sorry, sorry, I’ll keep the T4 warpath out of your recruitment thread. Good luck finding what you’re after in a guild.

Looking for Dungeon and Fractal Guild

Hey, I don’t know if you found what you’re looking for yet, but I figured I’d chime in.

[VZ] is a PvX guild on the Stormbluff Isle server, but we primarily run dungeons and fractals. I want to emphasize that many of us are dungeon masters and know every single path in-game, but that a lot of paths of a lot of dungeons are kind of a waste of time. To this end, we don’t run everything all the time, though there will always be groups doing CoF and Fractals, and any others that people are so inclined to do. It never hurts to ask. (CM is no fun, but I have been suckered into it before!) I do Fractals 48 pretty much whenever asked if I’m not already in something, and have an arsenal of a friends list that I can drag along to a run if they’re online. I also command in WvW periodically if that interests you at all, though it wasn’t in your original post.

Anyway, if you’re interested at all, let me know by contacting me in-game or on forums however suits you. More information on the guild can be found in the link in my signature (you can post there too if you want).

Regardless, good luck finding what you’re looking for. It helps a lot having people who you know are good in runs!
