Why on Tyria can't Engineer repair Siege in WvW

in Engineer

Posted by: Ronin.5038

Ronin.5038

An interesting concept that i could see working. Perhaps if engineers were able to carry twice the amount of supplies?

So far, my engineer only seems good for weak keep defence with mortar, or shooting through walls with flamethrowers flame jet. Although i did outfit my gear with runes of the centaur, and when paired with medkit i can effectively give small groups of people near perm swiftness (it’s great for running supplies and getting reinforcements to places quicker)
I’ll have to call you out on group stealth. Engineer has great group stealth. Try running bomb kit with healing turret, rifle turret and net turret and a sheild if you use p/s. I can easily stack 12 seconds of stealth on a 5 man group through all those blast combos. It’s also on a low cooldown of 35-40 seconds depending on how quick you are to set up the combo. You are also able to move during those 12 seconds and arn’t confined to a selected area.

Why do you bring an engineer?

Ronin.5038

I bring my engineer for pure support.

Constant weakness on ANY enemy.
High condition removal on teammates.
2x super elixir + healing mist aoe healing light fields.
Excellent and easy kiting through infused precision + invigorating speed.
Area of effect 6 stacks of might for 20 seconds every 30 seconds.
Entire group stealth for 10-12 seconds (this is better group stealth than even a theif can provide, as you’re not restricted to one location, and it’s on a low cooldown of 40 seconds)
High uptime on cripple.
Line of sight the occasional stationary boss or group of enemies with mortar.
Set up projectile reflecting or blocking walls with elixir u.
AOE revive field with elixir r.
Blinds, dazes, knockbacks, poisons.

I love my support engineer.

Portal (Gun)? 2 Skills suggestions

in Engineer

Posted by: Ronin.5038

Ronin.5038

Now you’re thinking with portals
An interesting idea, but #5 would be way too overpowered. All a WvW siege would need is 1 engineer with a portal gun to portal an entire zerg onto the enemy wall. Perhaps if it was a portal only you can use that gives a few stacks of confusion upon exiting the portal?
And why can’t friendlies pass through #3? Just copy the ward spells that the guardian uses and make it engineer themed.

Does anyone use the Mortar in PvE?

It shines against some bosses/mobs that do not move.
Sometimes i’ll be able to find a low wall or object that i can set my mortar behind. Then i just lob shells over the wall while being completely untouched throughout the entire fight.
Other than that, i would never use in a situation where my enemies can get to me as the mortars way too fragile.

Question about elixir gun build

in Engineer

Posted by: Ronin.5038

Ronin.5038

@snafoo: seems like kit refinement is a must and it does sound great too when it drops a super elixir, I welcome additional support stuff

@ronin: i see, so I don’t really need to spec full 30 points into inventions since I can get toughness from gear, but I will also lose out on the +healing, is it a huge noticeable difference or is it just tiny? Would healing/precision/vitality armor pieces make up for it?

My goal is to be tanky, can heal/support, and do some damage via DoT’s. I feel like I can only choose 2 of these while sacrificing one. Or I could lower my overall efficiency and have equal amounts of the 3 but be weaker. oh the decisions xD

I wouldn’t bother with any +healing gear. You can still have decent aoe healing through both super elixirs, toolbelt healing mist and backpack regenerator. It’s about 450 hp/sec for allies and 550 hp/sec for you.

Question about elixir gun build

in Engineer

Posted by: Ronin.5038

Ronin.5038

I put 30 points into firearms as it’ll boost your condition damage by 300 + give you 300 precision which comes down to somewhere around 13% crit chance.

Conditions can’t crit, but there are traits such as sharpshooter that have a chance to apply bleed on crit + the two traits infused precision and invigorating speed will inprove your survivability a bunch.

While glass cannon builds will outdo you through damage, if you build for conditions you can also build tanky by picking up condition damage/precision/toughness gear from Orr karma vendors.

You can also go to the mists to test builds out for free if you’re not sure which path to take.

Can condition damage really make up for lack of direct damage?

in Engineer

Posted by: Ronin.5038

Ronin.5038

Vulnerability is a condition.

Ever fought one of those big fancy dragons or one of those popular event bosses? With 20+ people attacking one target, condition builds are shafted. Burn and poison only stacks in duration, not intensity, so while you may be seeing damage from your burn and poisons, the other people running condition builds would not.
Compare this with power builds that can just deal straight up damage with no drawbacks, and power builds are superior when in a group setting.

Condition builds are not shafted. Not as a whole or as you state it. The only condition build that suffer are the under geared condition builds or those running conditions without focusing on condition damage stats.

Now I agree that straight power or crit builds have less draw backs.

It is beyond me why the devs have any conditions damage stack in durations. They should all simply stack similar to bleeds with intensity. Then they can adjust accordingly from their.

The thing is, the OP didn’t ask if he fought one of those fancy dragons with 20+ people their, if condition damage can compete with direct damage? he asked it looking at straight numbers, which he clarified with an example, not in very specific instances.

I think you may have misunderstood what i posted. I was pointing out that condition builds are shafted in large fights due to certain damaging conditions stacking in duration and not intensity while power/crit/crit damage builds can unload with no damage reduction other of toughness.

To the OP, no i don’t think a full condition damage build can stand up to the damage of a power/precision/crit damage grenade spam #1 build, but what condition damage looses in damage, it makes up for with utility such as weakness and healing reduction and we can build to be much more tanky while those glass cannons will break as soon as something looks at them.

Defensive Engineer for PvE and Dungeons

I run a Condition engineer.

Once you hit 80, pick up that condition damage/precision/toughness gear from the Orr karma vendors (do your daily acheivements and don’t spend any karma so you’ll have enough to buy at least 1 piece once you hit 80) There are green type jewelery pieces you can buy with the same stats also in Orr.

I run with a pistol/shield with an offhand pistol in my backpack if i want to sacrifice some defence.

Runes are rune of the centaur, but i use this as more of a pvp/wvw rune. Rune of the undead might be a more solid choice for pve.

For traits, i’m 0/30/0/30/10
Firearms: Infused precision/Rifled barrels/hair trigger
Alchemy: Invigorating speed/protection injection/backpack regenerator
Tools: Kit refinement

Skills are medkit, elixir gun, bomb kit, elixir r/u and supply drop.

With the near 100% uptime on vigor, swiftness, weakness (even on bosses), and my aoe health regeneration, i can stay alive for quite awhile.

This build also has a bit of flexibility with being able to change out bomb kit for something else.

Ronin.5038

They are rather weak if there are 2 or more condition build professions in a group. This is only because of the way conditions stack and our pistol #1 is kitten for stacking bleed after its nerf.

I have to disagree. Mobs can only have bleeds stack up to 25. I always see all of my condition numbers. That means I am always in the high enough tiers that my conditions always registers. I have 4-6 stacks of bleeds up at all times. That is 530-780 damage per second, just on bleeds. That is not counting direct AoE damage of explosive shot. Figure in the direct damage of poison dart hitting multiple targets for nice direct damage, add in the condition damage, and figure that it can be kept up on a target 100% of the time its solid. Between bomb kit, tool kit, and static shot, I can keep a minimum of 2 stacks of confusion on the target. That causes 1000+ damage every time they act. I see an enemy take 2500 damage just for healing themselves, which also heals for much 1/3 less with poison as well.

I have trouble calling that rather weak.

Ever fought one of those big fancy dragons or one of those popular event bosses? With 20+ people attacking one target, condition builds are shafted. Full party wide aoe near permanent swiftness (it’s bugged and has a 2 second longer cooldown) has helped greatly in wvwvw for running repairs and helping reinforcements get to a destination quicker (players and dolyaks).
It also has a 18 second cooldown + the bandages, antidote and stim.

The amount of condition cleansing doesn’t help, but luckily engineers have various condition skills that constantly apply/have a low cooldown.
Damage wise, a power/precision/crit damage build will beat a heavy condition damage engineer, but as with most glass cannons, they shatter easily, while a conditions engineer can pick up plenty of toughness to keep him alive and perhaps some vitaility on the side.

If you want to survive in dungeons you need 20 in alchemy for cleaning formula, no questions asked. With 20 in alchemy you have a decent HP pool.

Now what type of damage do you want to do?
If you want to deal condition damage then go with full rabid, which is precision, toughness, condition damage.
If you want to deal damage with grenades then go power/precision/toughness.
I find rifle to be more useful as a CC tool in dungeons than a damage source so you can build survivability with that and pack an elixir gun for even more supportive abilities to go with your CC.

20 into alchemy for cleaning formula helps, but it isn’t totally necessary, as a kit refinement elixir gun does the same job and only requires 10 in tools.
Switching to both traits would help immensely on any heavy condition stacking bosses/mobs though.
I find one of the best ways to survive in dungeons is to have a steady supply of vigor. If you can manage it into your build, try picking up the traits infused precision from the firearms tree, and invigorating speed from the alchemy tree as you seem to want to have a decent crit rate. Vigor should be up for around 90% of each fight and having 4 dodge rolls instead of 2 has saved my kitten plenty of times.
Another way to survive can be through regeneration effects. Try running backpack regenerator, kit refinement, and elixir gun. Stack both super elixirs on top of each other, use elixir guns toolbelt skill for regeneration, and start shooting with elixir gun. It’s a very easy 500-550 health/second regen for you and a 400-450 health/second regen for allies in your combo fields and it only has a 10 second downtime. This is also with 0 healing power.
Or take all of the above into a build and your survivability will increase dramatically.
