How do rangers kill mesmers? Help!

I play an axe torch sword dagger spirit ranger in PvP. Mesmers have very apparent annimations and playstlyes that allows you to counter them with skilled play.

You have to evade the berserker and the leaping clone. Watch for when the mesmer raises his greatsword, then evade. Watch for the weapon set that the mesmer is using, and keep your eye out for the leaping clone. If you can’t dodge it, use skill based evades.

You also have to counter the main source of damage. If they are running shatter, you can usually evade only the first phantasm attack before they shatter. You mainly need to evade the leap → blurred frenzy combo. For phantasm and condition builds, you need to make an effort to kill phantasms without dropping pressure on the mesmer. The active from storm sprit and a sigil of Geomancy proc will kill all phantasms, as will a bonfire.

Mesmers do not have great condition removal on their normal builds. Most will cleanse 1-2 conditions, which you can take advantage of by stacking conditions smartly. A simple spike would be axe 2 swap dagger 5 for 11 stacks of bleed, which you can cover with poison, immobilize, cripple, weakness, vulnerability, and blind. Use your skills smartly to avoid the condition removal, and they will die very very quickly.

That is just about all I do against a mesmer, and if done well, you shouldn’t have any problems fighting mesmers.

Rangers are weak in pve and wvw, but anet is slowly improving the ranger in that regard. In PvP, rangers are the best class for playing close point, because they are excellent duelists in PvP.

Dont worry too much about your class, the guild that kicked you is a guild you really don’t want to join. You should try to join one of the 300-500 man guilds on your server, because they are typically more social and friendly to new players.

Most groups won’t kick rangers, but some will kick you. The dungeons are more based on your knowledge of the mechanics rather than the class. You can be more effective than any other new player by knowing what to dodge and where to stand.

Wilderness has a trait “heal skills give vigor.” The vigor is “traiting” the heal. For heal as one and troll ungunet the trait isn’t great, but for healing spring the vigor pulses in aoe for a total of 18s aoe vigor.

I’d say a Guardian or necro would be very different from a ranger. Both are slower, less reliant on evasion, and have strong aoe and utility skills that are far different from anything the ranger has.

This can be done client side with ease. Anet simply needs to make a list of pets and then a stored name value. Something simple like:

Juvenile Wolf [Petname]
Juvenile Krytan Drakehound [Next Petname]

Every time a player chooses a pet, the game will search the client’s storage file to grab a name (if one exists). The biggest issue with something like this is the amount of time it will take to program. The devs probably have more important things to do.

I prefer having the 3rd spirit in order to have more cover conditions as well as to have group buffs in team fights. I will consciously stack conditions so that my bleeds are covered by the conditions from the spirits and my spider pet. Unlike other rangers I don’t bring Sharpened Edges because each bleed tick will make the stack of bleeds become the top stack for condition removal. By removing that trait I can ensure that the bleeds (and burns) are always on the bottom of the condition stack, so enemies like other rangers can’t remove them.

I recently bought a new laptop, and while testing GW2 with it I’ve noticed that while pressing W + E to strafe diagonally forward I can’t press the space bar to jump, but when I press Q + W to strafe left (as well as any combo of two movement keys), I can jump without issue while moving.

This issue only appears when the combination of W + E is pressed, I can move with any combination of WASD + QE as long as W and E are not pressed at the same time.

Is there some way to fix this issue? Is there some Windows 8 shortcut or function that is interfering with pressing the space bar with those keys held?

Tournament Builds O.o

I see a few Rangers who run a Greatsword and longbow combo. The idea is to combine the tanky aspects of BM with the control of greatsword/longbow, you will probably lose to a good spirit ranger or condition BM, but you can assault far point to decap even with the backpoint present.

The reward chests from tourneys have both free and paid tourney rewards. If you salvage the items you get you will get a mix of free/paid tourney reward tokens which you can use to craft the armor you want in the mystic forge.

Duoqueue within Soloqueue?

There needs to be some functionality for partial premades. Say a premade of 3-4 would fight premades, but a premade of 2 people would fight solo queue people. Then there could be an option to allow players to “full solo queue” or “partial solo queue” if they would like to play vs a full premade with a half premade.

If something like this doesn’t happen then people will sync just like gw1 random arena.

I think he means sitting on the point, rather than floating to midpoint and back. His point there is that the enemy team can play 5 people at mid by floating their backpoint player and they can win the 5v4 without facing the enemy backpoint.

yeah I agree with you regarding spvp.
i’ll try something different risking condition removal but always end up back on my spirit or condition build.

There also needs to be some huge changes in pve and wvw.

I’ve recently started playing WVW a lot and I don’t feel like a master of the wild. i feel like a very venerable guy with a bow and gs who cant escape anyone and has some animal humping my back leg constantly and when i point it at an invader it stands there looking at me for a while before running around behind the invader and just following him…..

I want to feel mobile and at one with nature!!!!!!!

And don’t get me started on theifs……….

That’s a shame. I find wvw to be quiet enjoyable. I win the majority of my 1 v 3s and below.

what build are you running for wvw. i’ve been contemplating making a knight build just to try it out.

I run full knights in WvW and it is not viable for anything aside from large group play. With large groups, you can trait into power and make use of very high toughness to survive, along with the 6s immunity sigil, and stability sigil actives.

Leeching Function for Report

Can we have a function to add “leeching” like in GW1 for reporting in pvp. People who join a tPvP match to sit in spawn all game are simply leeching from other players who are there to actually compete. It is unacceptable for a competitive format to have people unwilling to try, which hurts the ranking of everyone else. These people should be banned from the format.

You will fare much better with sword / dagger than the shortbow because you can evade spam the necro’s fear spam.

Second note, if you really want to beat necro’s bring melandru runes to remove the threat of fear chaining.

Another thing you can do is cast healing spring early in the fight, to use to to catch random fears and bleeds thrown at you.

No. I came from roaming WvW experience so I was preforming very well at level 8 compared to the lvl 20s I faced against at the time. I think anything that discriminates people remotely like HA (rank) doesn’t deserve to exist.

Bottom buff only appears at 8:30 and 2:30, not 5:30.

On a second note the buffs take skill because you cannot plan for something so late in the match, the skill lies with how your team rotates to contest/capture the buffs.

I remember one game where my team held a 2 cap on altar and temple, with gate contested. The enemy team had 4 at bottom buff and 1 on gate, so we decided that we would run in and suicide to stop the cap, delaying until we ressed to suicide again. In the end we didnt get a kill in the buff fight but we won the match by adjusting our strategy on the fly.

The problem with your thief is that you critical 3-4k if you manage to land a hit. A good Ranger will be evade spamming enough so most of your hits don’t land. With how glassy a thief is a single round of traps left uncleansed will usually kill a thief.

I dont think they stack like that. I believe the spirit applies the buff only once to allies. You can test it in the mists though, but I wouldn’t be too optimistic.

I do not agree with this because a S/D and A/T keeps the roles of your weapons together. Axe and torch are both ranged weapons that focus on direct damage with a snare from axe 3. Sword and dagger are both melee with the focus on defense.

The reason I prefer sword dagger more together is because they serve a defensive role much better when paired together. When I am taking heavy damage I need all the evasion possible, so keeping the the evades together allows me to rotate through them without a weapon swap cooldown keeping me from using another skill based evade.

Take for example a mesmer’s leap -> blurred frenzy. In order to evade the combo after you fall to Dodge the leap, you need to use skill based evades that total to 2 seconds. By keeping the sword and dagger together I can chain sword 3 and dagger 4 to evade the entire shatter combo. All else I need to do is just watch the weapon swaps to ready myself for the next leap burst.

When I’m attacking, I swap constantly between my weapon sets to abuse geomancy sigils. In this case the order of my weapons doesn’t matter, because the constant rotation keeps my conditions up.

Edit: Fire aura has a 1s internal cooldown on the might, so you will at most gain 3-4 stacks of might with the leap combo.

Yup, Blackgate stopped buying guilds and bought JQ. After much delegation, I believe JQ will find that they will be quite happy as a premier guild on Blackgate.

I really don’t like how my warrior can use a longbow to fire an 8k arcing shot on the move, along with a 3.5s immobilize, a massive aoe adrenaline skill, and an auto attack that has two 100% projectile finishers.

My Ranger on the other hand has one low damage aoe that locks me down, a crappy knockback, and an auto attack that is a single 20% projectile finisher that gets worse depending upon range.

How about a replacement of search and rescue (which overlaps with spirit of nature). With a new pet shout.

Shout : “Each second for 5 seconds your pet applies 1 stack of vulnerability for 7-8s (radius 600)”

This will give the ranger a useful shout which will provide a good group debuff in WvW addressing the lack of a ranger use in WvW. In PvP the reapplication of vulnerability will work to cover conditions or amplify direct damage. In PvE this will provide a version of “On my mark!” suitable for larger groups of enemies.

I consider the bow to be the fallback weapon. You should swap from melee to your bow once you are taking too much damage. This let’s you continue dealing damage while regaining health. The bows themselves are not as viable as melee in wvw because the lack of AoE.

Please do not transfer to NA at all. You will imbalance the tiers and will experience a metagame far behind EU. NA strategy is simply to gather enough people to zerg enemies with little regard to real group comps and team synergy.

Buy this high tech piece of machinery, it’s called a ‘Keyboard’. Equip a scepter and hit the ‘2’ key next to the wall.

It’s so lucky how FEAR’s Eles always manage to blindly auto-target the Arrow Carts!

That skill doesn’t require targeting in order to hit over a wall. The skill will case in front of you regardless of the height of what is in front of you.

And then people will complain about being incapable to join a team because their HA rank isn’t high enough. I’m all honesty HA was a terrible system that excluded new players from the format. What GW2 needs is a solo queue ranking and the capability for downward progression. Once those are implemented there needs to be a way to see the player’s rank in game.

I love the changes to the heart of the mists with this recent patch. The whole zone looks much better now that it is no longer permanent dusk in hotm. I hope that the lighting is a permanent change to the zone, because in my opinion, it is just so much nicer than it was before.

Maybe if the tpvp players were experienced enough and geared for wvw than they would do alright. The tactics are just so different between the two. Even the same build can play vastly differently because of the high stat totals in wvw vs tpvp.

I do feel that a 5 man premade built with a teamfight comp would dismantle the vast majority of small squads in WvW. The experience in tpvp is very valuable for roaming and small scale combat, but it doesn’t cross over well to zerg v zerg. That being said the level of communication and personal skill would likely make the tpvp players the winners given they had enough time to adapt to the wvw metagame.

WvW has much less of a commitment than tpvp, where the absence of one player will prevent a team from preforming. WvW allows people to play pvp at a high level without being tied to the time constraints of 4 other players.

People also enjoy the variety of WvW over pvp because of how open the maps are and how variable strategies can be.

I’ll also add that caed is a good thief. If you cant find a team then start one. You can form groups with people in lfg Guilds and review them after you pay with them. Over time you wind up with a lot of really good players that aren’t known that you can group with.

If it’s not happening, do it yourself.
