I use a 30/0/30/0/10 build with medkit/bomb kit/EG and elixir S. I have knight gear (pow/tough/precision) along with Dwayna runes. I generally melee but when I know I won’t be able to do so, I switch the bomb kit for grenades and take grenadier and shrapnel traits instead of bomb traits in explosive. I like the vuln stacking too so I prefer to keep this setup as it also allow me to switch for grenades for some encounters.

Signet of Illusions needs a change.

I agree with the OP, one possible suggestion is to have the active ability give the phantasms quickness but increase their damage taken by 50%.

I don’t think quickness reduces the cd between the phantasm attacks so it would be wasted most of the time imo.

I think you are mistaken guys. Runes of altruism proc of using your healing skill, not swapping weapons. So yes, they are really good for engineers who use medkit. I don’t think any other class can use this type of proc as well as engineers. Maybe mesmer with the mantra of recovery as it has a 10s cd but most other profession got a longer cd on their healing skill (thief and elem got a 15s healing skill though).
I wish there was a set of runes which grants aoe protection when using a healing skill. I use Dwayna’s that grant aoe regen but protection would be nicer.

@Terra, if you’re talking about shout skills, they only have 600 range if I’m not mistaken, not 1200. I wish it was 1200 or even 900 would be fine as I feel 600 is a bit short sometimes when you’re in melee and have mostly range in your team or that the fight needs mobility. But guardian is already powerful as it is so I don’t think these shouts will be buffed.

They need to fix the passive. An active like illusions attack timer reset would be nice. If you know they are about to be wiped, they could do an extra attack before dying.

Explain to me how engi support builds are nice?
In my knowledge engi supports ends on elixir gun 5th skill.

fumigate, healling turret overcharge, healing turret water field, toolbelt waterfield + regen, alchemy X trait, supply crate with it’s med kits and a massive amount of blinds.

How does it compare to shout warrior with soldier runes that still deals nice amount of damage? Healing turret waterfield doesn’t even work properly and rest of the skills provide only regen buff and minor amount condition removal, also I wouldn’t call 3blinds on 20+s cd (that take 2utility slots) ‘massive’.
Supply Crate? kitten please, have you seen battle standard?

Same can be said about dps so why are you playing your engineer instead of a warrior?

1. Fix the kit refinement effects for the flamethrower, bomb kit, and med kit. These effects are flat-out bad (in the case of flamethrower or med kit) or non-functional (in the case of bomb kit, which is bugged when forceful explosions is traited).

Agreed, I only use it for the double super elixir. It could use a buff.

—Med kit: the tiny explosion the med kit causes makes no sense (why is a med kit exploding?) and doesn’t do noticable damage. I’d recommend making this kit create a short AoE regen, vigor, or single condition removal on equip, with internal CD, of course.

One of these would be fine or maybe short protection?

—Bomb kit: even if the current effect worked, it wouldn’t be very useful. If it has to be one of the current bomb kit skills, let’s make it the immobilize (smoke or concussion would be too powerful). I’d rather see a large-AoE vulnerability bomb or a small-AoE .5-sec daze bomb.

Aoe vuln or short daze bomb would be nice indeed. As it is now, it seems pointless.

2. Fix turrets. Right now, they offer bad damage, some control (net turret, rocket turret, knockbacks) and zero support. I’d like to see turrets become a staple of dungeon support builds—for example, the flame turret toolbelt could be a smoke wall to give give us a small fraction of the projectile-stopping power of the guardian. (On that note, elixir U toolbelt could stop projectiles 100% of the time instead of 66%…) Even if both changes were implemented, we still wouldn’t come close to a projectile-blocking guardian, but maybe with our other utility it would be enough to play fractals support.

Agreed, we need a more reliable reflecting/blocking projectile skill than Elixir U as it is now. We really lack in this area and for some dungeons or fractals, it’s really something we need. I use #4 of shield but it doesn’t last long and if you’re not focused, it’s useless.

Regarding Super Elixir, in practice:

I’ve noticed that it only benefits static tanking vs mobs. What i’ve noticed is that teammates will ignore the field about 80% of the time, so over half the time they will run out of it simply by trying to gain additional distance from whatever is hurting them (because hurt teammates tend to like to run to heal up). In essence, SE will only work when the group is bunkering down statically vs a mob. So SE has a good chance to heal when your tanks are tanking, but doesnt work vs classes with mobility because they just run out of the field! You get one, maybe 2 heal pulse offs and the SE is otherwise wasted.

That said, how does it stack up against Healing Rain (Ele/Water Staff 5) which has similar mechanics?

What is the base healing stat on a Lvl.80 engie? And are the heals you cite based on the basic healing stat? full heal gear w/o heal bonuses from runes? or full heal gear with a specific rune set?

I agree with this but most people don’t necessarily know what an engineer can do or classes they don’t play for that matter. When they know, they’re more than happy to stand in said field and even ask for them (had this happen in TA last time as one noticed I was a healingbomber with EG and kitrefinement).

I have the same problem with my guardian tbh. My empower/shouts have 600 range. I can remove conditions with the shouts, give aegis/protection/regen/stability, give 12 stacks of might and heal with empower but try to give that to 4 other people that don’t know how to play with your class? Good luck. Even the spirit shield which is kind of obvious, some people don’t stay under the bubble.
Even saw people dodge rolling away from the vines in TA when they have stability or aegis on them. xD
So if people don’t know how to play with a guardian, class which is known for its support abilities, it’s sure you can have a hard time supporting your team with an engineer. Your best bet is to tell people what you can do or not or play with friends which knows your build a bit.

If they could boost super elixir a bit, that would be nice. Maybe not as much as when it was when bugged but it could use a buff. I feel we don’t necessarily need much more healing but maybe more access to protection which helps a ton when melee with bombs.

I’ve considered getting mantra of pain with restorative mantra in a phantasm build. A 2.5k aoe heal every few seconds could be worth the utility slot. Anyone tried that already?

Pretty sure GS#5 is a knockback, not a knockdown. Maybe you could have been knocked down thanks to mirror of anguish (chaos trait) but that implies you did the knockdown first. Mesmer don’t have any knockdown skills.

I can confirm this as well. Been testing duelists’ damage on training dummies at LA. With Duelist’s Discipline the phantasm consistently deals around 1.8k damage, and w/o it deals 2.2k. Any official response on this bug?

I would say that if you want to run fractals, toughness is better than vitality. Vitality is a disavantadge with agony. It is a %HP damage but you have to heal back more to get to full life if you have the same healing power so it’s more difficult to get back to full health. You don’t have this problem with toughness. Of course when you have high agony resistance, it is less a problem.

There’s a guy whom suggested turning blink into a signet with the passive being 25% speed increase and the active being blink. I feel that would be the best change. We don’t lose any skills and gain more functionality from one we already have. Plus, we lose the speed boost for a while if we teleport so it already balances itself. The coding is already in the game. Come on Anet! Make it happen!

People traiting manipulation skill to have higher range would disagree with this change maybe.

I really like mantras I find this build works very well in dungeons (I have ~1000 healing power so I heal my party quite a bit per mantra activation & I can heal, condition cure, and such while disabled because mantras are instant.) Mantras require a bit more of an “active” or alert playstyle b/c you have to remember to keep them activated for use, but I enjoy them.

I may be mistaken but I thought the party heal was when you were charging the mantra, not activating it?

@ Mesmer: We’ll be addressing the current Mesmer build that’s spiking for insane damage. Sorry that change got through – it is something we’ll be fixing.

@ Macros: Macros are against the user agreement. You can be banned for using them, so use them at your own risk. I would also advise against using them, because in live tournaments, you won’t be able to use macros. So it makes little sense to learn “bad habbits” you’ll just have to retrain later.

We adhere to the same “one keystroke = one action on one character/account”, which is used by a lot of MMO publishers when defining botting/macros.

Just wanted to clear that up – be careful w/ those macros, they can get you banned.

This answer is in the shattered strength topic, not the shatter bug one. He is mentioning shatter build and the buff to shattered strength so I guess they’re just gonna nerf it. I could be mistaken though. Fixing the bug would be the best thing to do but well, we all know what happens when they try to fix mesmer bugs. xD

I didn’t say we couldn’t reflect projectiles, I said we were lacking in this area. A 60s cd spell that only have 2/3 chance of producing the effect you want (or 1/3 if you want stealth) is not what I would call reliable.
Wall of reflection got the same cd, spirit shield too, #5 shield skill is 45 s cd, smoke screen is 30s cd, feedback 40s and those are sure effects. That’s what I call lacking sorry. xD
Happily we have shield#4 but then it doesn’t necessarily help your team mates if they are too spread.

I feel what we lack in support that is really useful in dungeon especially fractals is ability to absorb or reflect projectiles. That makes some dungeons significantly easier. My guardian can do it really well (absorb bubble on rez, spirit shield, wall of reflection, sanctuary, #5 on shield) and I know my engi is limited in this area. For the rest, I’m really satisfied and enjoying supporting with engineer.

Chaos storm is a troll skill to get swiftness tbh. I sometimes stand in it waiting for the full duration only to not get a single proc of it and think I’d better not wasted time with it.
More reliable swiftness he said, like praying to Lyssa to get swiftness with signet or inspiration or equiping a focus/getting runes which is just what we used to do before.

Do you even know what you’re talking about? The active effect recharges my shatter skills, how does that make my phantasms easier to kill? be serious or GTFO
What’s difficult in understanding that I might be interested in a skill that grants more 50% health to my phantasms?…

Correct me if I’m wrong but if you activate the signet, your phantasm are supposed to lose the passive effect of the signet, which makes them easier to kill as they lose health. I have never tried it tbh so I don’t know how it actually behaves but it’s supposed to be like this.
A signet that make you not want to get the active effect is poorly designed imo. Activating a signet should always be a question of context and you should want to activate it when some situation arises. When playing a phantasm build, you almost never want to activate it as it’s quite rare you need your shatter skills cd resets (maybe for distorsion or diversion).
I’d rather have this signet active be something like your phantasm attack timer resets so that maybe if they are about to die, they can still lose half their hp but do one last attack and then you can shatter them. I’m sure there are other better options for an active but that’s the only one that came to my mind.

Duelist discipline has two bugs too.
When you take this trait, the iDuelist phantasm does less damage than without it.
It also causes the iDuelist to be a 100% projectile finisher instead of 20%.

I confirm this. I tested this out in the HoM with 20 points in Duel.
There is a about 20% reduction of damage of the Duelist phantasm when you take the trait duelist discipline.

I was sure it would not last even if I would have prefered to be wrong. Buffing mesmer is just not something they can do or there is a QQ apocalypse on the forum.
We can hope they will split PvE and PvP but there again I don’t believe it as this trait is also really powerful in WvW.

Well, at least they don’t just nerf us now, they buff us before nerfing back, just with enough time for you to change your spec and your gear and waste money doing so. Enjoy!

Hmm, why do you play engineer then? I’m pretty sure there is always a class that can dps (sustain and burst) or support or do both at the same time better than engineer anyway.
I have an AH hammer guardian and the support is great along with decent damages. Why do I play a support engineer too? Because I enjoy it and it’s effective enough for the content I’m playing.
Playing a game isn’t always about min/maxing everything, it’s also to have fun. shrug

I’m playing a support build too and I enjoy it a lot for the moment. I’m not saying it’s the best build out there, it just fits my playstyle better. I’m playing only PVE btw.

I run a 30/0/30/0/10 with med kit/bomb kit/elixir gun/elixir S/supply crate and pistol/shield. I generally take larger bomb radius, reduced cd on bombs and 10% more damage for explosions. If I’m doing a boss that’d better be done at range, I can swap the bomb kit for grenade and grab grenadier and bleed on explosions.

In invention, I take protection when critical hit, % toughness converted to power and healing bomb. There are other nice traits like the shield cd one.
In tool, I grab kit refinement.

Gear is knight with Dwayna runes. Pistol with sigil of blood and shield with hydromancy.

With med kit, you can give regen to your group with the runes every 10s.
Toolbelt skill from elixir gun gives regen too. Super elixir x 2 with kit refinement and nice regen with supply crate too. And of course the bomb healing for melee mates.
Bombs gives you some control too with the #5 and #4 and a fire field to combo for might stacks.
Elixir S is nice when you’re in trouble or if you want to rez someone in the middle of a pack. Elixir R can be good too but the cd is quite long on the rez so I prefer elixir S (matter of taste). And I just love to use elixir S with my tiny asura, seems like I’m vanishing completly.
Toolbelt skill from elixir S can help rez too if you’re lucky enough to get the stealth effect.

Pistol/shield is nice for the aoe blind, blast finisher/knockback, the reflect and the block/stun.

I don’t do tons of damages with this build but it’s decent and the vulnerabilty I put on the targets improve the damage of the whole group. Maybe I’ll switch to a more dps-focused build one day but I enjoy this build for the moment.

I read the thread you linked and it’s making me sad. So many ppl are clueless about mesmer and QQ for op. It would be funny if it wasn’t the cause of the nerf we had and we’re gonna get.
While I agree that the shatter spec is really powerful, it’s also more work to pull off the damage they’re talking about than say thief burst for example and the comments just show how misinformed they are but still QQ because they got outplayed.

The issue about the nerf is that they gave us compensation. . . they put Protection in another source further into the same tree. If you are going all out on a build that is going to absorb a good amount of damage then you’ll find that dropping targeting with the stealth abilities quite strong, coupled with instant protection (almost all the time) to stave off their AoE when you do stealth is rather strong. I’ve found I like stealth just for being able to finish casting abilities and the such, and setup and plot my next move.

Um sorry but no, that MAYBE getting protection for 3 secs when going stealth does not cut it at all.

Maybe if we had tons of stealth skills, but includen torch we only got 4.

I tested it a bit in the mist and with no condition at all on the dummy, the damage dealt is less than what the tooltip suggest. With the setup I had, it was supposed to do 1300ish damage and was only doing 1000-1100ish damage (non crit).

As I said, it doesn’t have to do anything with Phantasmal strength. It is the duelist discipline trait that is buggy. Even if you don’t have phantasmal strength, with duelist discipline your iDuelist does less damage.

For sigil, just beware as they all share the cd. When you swap and get the effect of sigil of battle, you won’t be able to trigger the proc of sigil of strength for 9s. When you trigger the proc of sigil of strength, the cd is 1s though.

Hmm been testing a bit in HoM and I must say I agree, there is something buggy.
You don’t even need to try with phantasmal force in fact. Even if you just put 20 point into duelling and test the damage of the duelist with and without duelist discipline trait, you’re gonna see a difference.
Without any crit on the salve, it was about 1400 damage for the full attack without duelist discipline and about 1100 with it.
Even with 1 or 2 crit hits in the salve with duelist discipline, it wouldn’t match the damage of the salve without any crit without the trait (I only had 20% crit damage in this setup but still).
If more people could test it, it would be nice. ^^

As for the op, I doubt they will change it though I wish they would. I don’t like to feel forced to go a certain build to be effective (shatter build for example). This game is supposed to be all about diversity and how every class can more or less accomplish what they want and at this point, there are some traits that seems useless and almost nobody is taking and some which feels almost mandatory because they are that good compared to other.
