Holy Trinity

People should learn to play the game and build their characters not to achieve the best result, but simply for fun.

But the “best result” is what’s fun. Achieving the best result is “fun” in games and most other endeavors; you want the best result, which is fun or desirable.

~~~~~~~
On another note, one thing the trinity does it to help people feel secure. A DPS can focus on his or her role knowing the tank and healer has their back; A healer knows the tank ain’t gonna let a mob kill them (well ideally, at least); a tank knows healer is gonna keep them healthy…
In this way, the trinity provides comfort. There are many reasons the trinity works, that is just one.
In the end to address the OP directly,:
What I see in the trinity is a system where we watch each other’s back. That’s what’s good about it, imo. By watching each other’s back in such a way, you build strong friendships (or shall I say friendship is more common), and it gives one a strong sense of purpose. In a trinityless system people don’t look out for each other as much. Perhaps this is one reason that while some GW2 servers feel so full while seeming so empty.
Is Guild Wars 2 dying??
Hey Guys,
I Guild Wars 2 dying?
There is barely anyone playing PVE from what i am observing… Bosses, major events and other interactive mechanisms are basically empty, played GW2 for 3-4 hrs today, have only seen less than 10ppl around PVE. Is it because i am in a low lvl area? or is GW2 dying??
PS im lvl 24 in lvl 1-30 areas.
It has never been the same since i left GW2 a few months ago… So little ppl playing? There isn’t much fun now T_T where are all of the players???
Anet guards their numbers well, but the game is probably doing alright. My server, The Tarnished Coast, is always busy – but the same can’t be said for some servers.
Anyhow, as many of you know, Blizzard just announced their next expansion which might soak up a lot of WoW refugees who came here disenchanted with Mists of Pandaria. Furthermore, both Wildstar and EQ Next are in the offing and that may siphon people from GW2 as well.
GW2 will probably exist amongst all this as a small niche game, kinda like it does now. Nothing wrong with that, really. A game need not boast millions upon millions of players to be good.
GW2 will never be the top dog MMO, but that doesn’t mean it’s unhealthy or dead. Nevertheless, GW2’s endgame, however that is manifest, is not robust (and probably never will be), and the game alienates many players who opt for traditional tank/healing roles. The trinity may be old, but I don’t believe an MMORPG that lacks it will ever reign supreme in the market — it’s tried and true. Yes, yes, yes — you have tanks and healers in GW2, you can stretch the term to fit, but it’s a soft trinity.
In the end, GW2 will likely be around for years to come.
EDIT: What Farzo said.
This is a bit off topic, well a lot off topic, but, given your comment, I feel as if I must put it out there.
I like GW2, I like it a lot actually – but not having a trinity is a tough pill for me to swallow. It sucks for me, too – in a trinity MMO I always main heals and tank on the side. Rarely will one see me DPS because, well, over the long haul, it’s a boring role….
I disagree.. Its just done differently…. there is no healer role per-se in guild wars 2 but there is a support role you can play and the tools you’re given as a support role blows away every other MMO.
This is how I look at it personally… perhaps it will not apply to you but nothing lost by considering the following…
as a healer your primary aim is to keep your allies alive. In the majority of MMOs that means healing, buffing and cleansing conditions. In some games you cannot even do all these 3 at the same time but rather you need to choose one or two paths out of the 3. In Gw2 you’re not restricted in any way but you need to remember that in guild wars 2 keeping your allies alive isnt just about healing and buffing anymore. Its also about ensuring your allies arent hit (using conditions like blinding or reflect projectiles etc…) Its about ensuring that if an ally is in dire straits they can escape long enough to heal. (that can mean chilling, fearing, pushback etc…) It means reducing the damage they get (weaken the attacker, protection / aegis on friendly). It means helping your allies win before they die… (give them boons like might, quickness, retaliation etc..) as well as the usual heals and cleansing of conditions.
If you want to play support, its there, its just done different from what we’re used to thats all.
Yes, precisely. Then I went on to say:
Sure you have tanks in GW2, but they are “tanks.” Likewise you have healers, but they are only “healers.” Fact is, GW2 is a DPS-centric game.
^That’s the part that you conveniently clipped before going on to disagree. Note, I never said there wasn’t a support role in GW2. To make myself clear, let me say this: Although all healers may qualify as a support role, all support roles don’t qualify as a healer. I also went on to say:
I am happy there is no real (by “real” I mean dedicated) healing in this game.
Which means that I understand everything you wrote you, but was speaking to the role of dedicated healer, as in a trinity healer. I don’t know exactly what you’re disagreeing with. I addressed all your point, but you took a snippet and ran with it, which is fine, but here you are.
Now, GW2 is good what it is. I LIKE THE GAME, but for me as someone who enjoys healing, the game feels empty and fails to truly captivate me. Sure you can claim there are healers in GW2 just like you can claim there’s endgame, but it’s grasping at straws; it’s, like I said, scraping the bottom of the mayonnaise jar. Once again, like I said in the quote of mine that you snipped, the are healers in GW2, but they are “healers.” Just did AC last night in a group with no-one playing a support role. We only wiped once and that was on the Queen Spider thing and that’s because we totally screwed up.
A lot of the issues regarding 80 content is that it’s not interesting. What do you do in CoE p1-3? Get up close to alpha and kill him. What do you do in CoF p1-3? Get up close to xxxxx boss and kill him. Rinse and repeat.
The creators of the game SEVERELY limited THEMSELVES by creating armor with stats. They wanted to be like other MMOs but unless you are that MMO, you’ll never be it. You want to be like WoW? Make WoW. You want to be everquest? Make everquest. You are guild wars developers, make guild wars.
GW1 PvE was vast and grinding was for looks- yet the CONTENT drove innovation and interesting game play. Anet thought of destroying “the trinity” of gaming but didn’t realize there’s not a lot left without structure.
This is a bit off topic, well a lot off topic, but, given your comment, I feel as if I must put it out there.
I like GW2, I like it a lot actually – but not having a trinity is a tough pill for me to swallow. It sucks for me, too – in a trinity MMO I always main heals and tank on the side. Rarely will one see me DPS because, well, over the long haul, it’s a boring role. Sure you have tanks in GW2, but they are “tanks.” Likewise you have healers, but they are only “healers.” Fact is, GW2 is a DPS-centric game. I would be willing to wager a lot that if I conducted a study seeking to answer who most loved GW2, it would be people who preferred DPS in trinity games. As much as I want to, I just can’t get totally sucked into this game. I must admit, however, in a way that is a good thing: This world, the way armor looks, this [awesome] community, Anet itself (whom I respect); how Anet managed to capture that snappy, ultra responsive combat that a lot of MMOs can’t nail; the mobs, the dungeon layout, and I could go on for pages… considering all that, kitten I am happy there is no real (by “real” I mean dedicated) healing in this game. I would be so friggin’ addicted to this game while opening my wallet to the Gem Store – it wouldn’t be funny.
I am back off a 4 month hiatus due to family stuff, but even before that GW2 was only fun in short bursts. It fails to captivate me. Sadly, after 7 years, WoW still does that, and I am faaaaar from alone. I know a lot of WoW players who are eagerly awaiting the next MMO that blows them away. I feel it’s a testament to the sad state of affairs in the MMO industry when the king of the block is an MMO that just celebrated its 9th birthday.
I have an 80 Thief, I actually love the class (no, really it’s a genius take on the classic “thief” class), but at 80 there just isn’t much to do save what I did leveling up, exploring zones and running 5 mans. I’m no real PvP’er and it’s like I have nothing of merit to play for. I reckon we can debate the nature of endgame, but, for me, it feels like I am scraping the bottom of the mayonnaise jar to get it.
Alas, I have faith in GW2. The game is young, the devs are still realizing the potential of this game, and, perhaps, in a few years I’ll be posting on these very boards telling newbies how I played “vanilla” GW2, looking through my rose colored goggles telling them how awesome it was. I mean, I don’t expect a holy trinity to ever manifest in this game, because that’s not the foundation of GW2. I do believe, however, that we’ll begin to see more robust content that can be called endgame.
Two things that I believe really hurt GW2:
1) No trinity
2) No noteworthy endgame.
If GW2 had those two things, it would be well on its way to ruling the MMO market (especially with its buy to play model). It would be different enough from WoW to not be called a clone, but still have what WoW, and “WoW minded players” players covet. It woulda hit the sweet spot.
Meh, in the end I like the game for what it is, something to play while I am locked outta WoW raids. But c’mon Anet, make me and a couple million WoW players cancel our accounts (because secretly we’re dying to do so).
I am just coming back off a 4 month or so hiatus, but there was a guild on TC named [LGBT]. I was in it for a while, it was pretty active and everyone was very nice. I left the guild before I left the game, but doing so had NOTHING to do with the quality of the people there. I reiterate, they were very nice and welcoming people.
Actually, while I was typing this to you, it struck me to log into the game and ask around for you, and I may have something that can help. The guild is called Our Sanctuary [LGBT]. The fine folks in Lion’s Arch Mapchat said they’ve seen a lot of people running around with the tag, so I reckon the guild is still active. Log into the game and ask around about these folks. You’ll find something, I’m sure.
Here is a link to their site:
http://lgbt.enjin.com
Their forums don’t seem too active, however. Then again I’ve been part of guilds with inactive forums and have personally perked them up by leaving input, this despite being somewhat of an introvert myself. Oh, btw, I was part of the “Q” crowd. I was welcomed nonetheless. Try ’em out.
I wish you and your hubby the best of luck in finding a guild to suit your needs. Don’t give up, they’re out there, I assure you.
Can I roll a guardian and have a “REAL” healer. By that I mean someone who can heal the group on his own accord. I don’t care what I have to do to heal, but can I heal nonetheless?
I appreciate and play GW2 for what it is, but I cannot stick with it because it’s a DPS’ers game. I love healing… in any MMO I play, if there is a healing class, that’s what I’ll be. There are no real healers in GW2 so I stay entertained for a week or three, then go back to my other games where I can heal. It’s all DPS here… DPS is boring over the long haul.
Again, I knew there would be no healers coming into this game. I don’t fault it for that, but, as an MMO, it’s just a side game I play every once in a while.
I could never get into this game hardcore. IMO, It’s too boring for that – no heals.
have you ever tried a full cleric’s geared guardian? It can heal a ton of dmg to the party. The only thing is, you can’t just stand still and focus completely on healing. Unlike most other MMOs, GW2 is more action oriented. So instead of targeting your teammates to heal them, you have to use your movement (whether to dodge and negate damage completely or to move closer to whoever you want to heal). If that’s not your style, then I suppose this isn’t the right game for you.
I played a guard, but never full cleric’s geared. I don’t care what I have to do to heal, so long as I can heal. How powerful are the heals? Can I single-handedly keep a group alive? How powerful would my heals be really?
If I saw a player at half health could I fill him up, then fill up another and another?
How GW2 Appeals To The 'Casual Kid' In Us
I agree… the bosses (and trash) in this game are jokes. No real mechanics. Overuse of Dodge… dodge, dodge, dodge, and dodge some more. That’s pretty much the extent of GW2 PvE – just dodge gimmicky mobs that would otherwise 1-shot you.
Besides, for me, there is no real incentive to even be bothered with higher level content. Furthermore legendaries are pointless. Really? All that grinding just for a new look? Give me some perk beyond “ohhh shiny.”
Every class is pretty much DPS – no real reason to re-roll something once I got a class to 80 because it’ll just be a DPS, albeit with a slight variation from one class to another… characterized by a so-called soft trinity.Oh, I can be ranged or melee. DPS is DPS and DPS is boring. This game is just made for people who like DPS. Anet understood most MMO players opt for DPS, and tried tapping into that and failed. Unfortunately for me, I like healing and to a much lesser extent (but more than DPS) I like tanking. GW2 has neither meaningful tanking or healing.
Instances are a bore, a chaotic zerg-fest with mobs running around, aggro be kitten ed, and players dodging every way till Sunday waiting for their self-heal to come off CD.
No addons. I can understand not wanting addons for encounters, damage meters, resource tracking, addons that modify the TP, etc., but JEEZ can we at least get addons that are aesthetic only? In an MMO your interface should be personal. I don’t like the DEV basically saying “this is the interface you’re gonna get, no options.” It sucks. No freedom in this game with respect to how you interface with it.
The Lore and RP are what keeps me playing this game. PvE is a complete joke.
Legendaries and the selling of such.
IMO It’s a fun game, but it doesn’t last. Hope you like DPS and dodging, because that’s pretty much all you’ll do PvE wise. WoW is better. If you don’t count the LF-whatever, WoW is actually far more challenging that GW2, but can be an easy walk in the park if you stick to its dungeon/raid finderr content. GW2, on the other hand: Just learn to dodge attacks that will otherwise one-shot you; that’s what the fight mechanics amount to. It’s pretty much hack and slash.
GW2 is well worth $50 or $60… whatever it costs now.
WoW isn’t better. WoW is different. That means what’s better is a matter of taste….
That…. ummm, is kinda obvious, Vayne. That difference is what makes it better for me. It’s an opinion.
The way people say things is important. You know it’s your opinion, I know it’s your opinion, but you wouldn’t believe how many people take those types of statements as fact. And that’s not your fault.
It won’t stop me from pointing it out either. Language is important to me.
People aren’t that stupid – give folks a least a smidgen of credit. If I say McDonalds is far better than Burger King, most people will know it’s an opinion. I doubt OP or anyone else read what I wrote and was like “kitten – WHAT A FACT HE JUST LAID OUT!”
People aren’t that stupid? All people? Most people? What about psychology? Or do you not factor that in….
It’s not like I said something false.
Read what you quoted, didn’t I just say “most people will know it’s an opinion”? Indeed, what you said wasn’t false, it’s just so blatantly obvious that it [should] go without saying. Again, most people, as in the vast majority, are not so naive as to think that “look this dude said WoW is better, must be a fact. Lemme drop this game and do exactly what he says. Oh wait, this guy Vayne says it’s an opinion, I’ll stick with GW2… glad he saved me.” Haha – no. Vayne, “WoW isn’t better. WoW is different. That means what’s better is a matter of taste….” O.B.V.I.O.U.S.L.Y. I think pretty much anyone who is able to read and who has an IQ over room temperature (most people) will get that.
@Arkham Creed: I will enjoy my raids, thank you. While I do that, enjoy grinding skins and playing through simple-minded gimmicky boss mechanics that are all avoided by using a dodge button in a hack and slash free-for all (see how silly that is to go back and forth). GW2 is fun, it’s a good game — but if you want actual mechanics that require thinking beyond “how fast can I hit dodge;” bossfights that amount to more than just dodging or strafing out of the way… yeah, I’ll enjoy my WoW raids. Is GW2 a good game… sure – WoW is just better (do I really need to add “IMO” at the end of that sentence?). All the bosses in this game, every single one is easy to defeat. You just dodge through every instance — same can’t be said for WoW. At least heroic raids and challenge mode 5 mans offer the player a challenge. When you drop one of those bosses in WoW it comes with a sense of accomplishment, when you kill a boss in GW2, it’s like “alright, that was easy.”
Both Games have their strong and weak points and both are fun to play (just WOW is far more fun). Stop treating these games like religions or political parties where it’s one or the other.
@Karizee: See my last comment about treating these games like religion. Also if you think most of the people leaving WoW are coming here then, ummm, yeah… it’s no point to even engage in a meaningful discussion. Your particular video was bad, and would be just as bad if it was a WoW-centric video. That video made it clear… people really do treat these games like religions (especially MMO gamers). Just because, IMO of course, WoW is better doesn’t mean this game is worthless junk that should be uninstalled, and vice versa for someone who enjoys GW2 more.
Blizzard and Anet are both good companies – they are both making a killing on these games. One makes you pay a sub so things are done in the game to get people to play longer; the other is sub free but nudges you toward that gem store. One requires a bit more thinking to defeat the hardest content (WoW), one is just a hack and slash that doesn’t require much though to defeat content (which isn’t always a bad thing). In the end, though, when I beat a boss, I wanna feel like I really beat him doing more than just hitting a dodge button. It’s like the devs use the dodge button to get out of having to create engaging mechanics.
Female VS Male Appearance/Height
Nope, you can’t make a female toon equal to size as a male toon with any of the races in this game. Why can’t one make the females of other races equal or greater height than the males? Are Sylvari males generally taller than females irl?
Where did you find a sylvari irl? Like I said once it comes to other races – there’s no logic behind it, it’s all up to the way the developer wants to portray the race. If I want my males in my games to lay eggs, I can make it so, however if I decide to copy the human reproductive system and put it on an alien, nobody can say that that is wrong.
Exactly Sylvari don’t exist irl. With respect to other races there is indeed logic behind it. It is because males are deemed to be taller than females which is, like I said before you even mentioned it, grounded in a reality – but if it were not a brand of sexism, which you’re dismissing, why can I not make a female taller than or tall the males in even the mythical races? Why does human male talleness have to be superimposed on all the other races as well? Sexism, is why. Even for the mythical races there is no way a female could possibly be taller or more robust than a man.
By the same token, having similar height harms nobody, while providing the benefit of letting people make the character they want to make. My wife is taller than most men, while I’m shorter than the average guy, and it’d be kind of nice to see a greater range of height variation in what we’re allowed to do with our characters. Even if you don’t consider it sexist, it is restrictive; a lot of the character customization options are based on what the developers and designers consider attractive or ideal (as much has been said outright), and that leaves something to be desired for those of us who don’t share their tastes.
Create the shortest guy and make your wife create the tallest girl. No matter how tall she is she will never be taller than most guys in reality and no matter how short you are you’re likely not to be shorter than a very short woman. The GW2 height system represents it well.
I like realism. Does that mean that your vote should count for more than mine?
But it would be a social commentary, and would make the game more accurate.
Yet it harms gameplay. Gameplay >realism. Who is harmed by a realistic height slider though?
Example of where gameplay and realism was done correctly – Mount and Blade. You’re allowed to be a female fighter (even though in reality you most likely wouldn’t have) (gameplay), however characters you come across most likely won’t take you seriously, which fits with the medieval feel and medieval point of view.
Also: Well then, are the females of Tyria’s other races tall as or taller than males? Or is it just human males that can be taller than their female counterparts?
Completely depends on what kind of physiology does the game developer develop for the race and what is natural for that race.
But height would also be your social commentary, and would make the game more accurate [wikipedia links soon to come].
How would that be a good representation of reality when on average women are shorter and the tallest woman is shorter than the tallest guy?
Seriously, we aren’t rolling what’s supposed to be the world’s tallest people. At character creation, the tallest woman should be as tall as the tallest man, because the tallest man you can create isn’t supposed to be the tallest man in the world.
And why may I ask? Why SHOULD it be taller than a male when it is NOT how it is in reality?
You seem to be claiming that this or that thing SHOULD be this way, otherwise it’s sexist. Well that’s not how it works in reality. Women are not as buff and as tall as males in reality nor on average, nor on the tallest/ strongest graphs. If we’re portraying your average hero then on average the female will be shorter.
I feel like people throw around the word “sexism” far too much. So much that portraying our bodies the way that they are is a crime apparently. It’s ridiculous. Males and females have physical differences. Deal with it.
Women are generally physically weaker than men as well, how about we reduce melee dmg dealt by female player characters? Let’s go for the whole 9 yards, right?
That would harm gameplay, while height difference harms nobody.
But height would also be your social commentary, and would make the game more accurate [wikipedia links soon to come].
Also: Well then, are the females of Tyria’s other races tall as or taller than males? Or is it just human males that can be taller than their female counterparts? Also, I see no crime. I, personally, have no problem with sexism — it exists though.
Female VS Male Appearance/Height
Again….
“SURE MEN ARE GENERALLY TALLER THAN WOMEN….”
and in the extremes. Isn’t it more of a social commentary than sexism? Women in general are smaller than men, therefore it only makes sense to portray them that way in art and media.
Women are generally physically weaker than men as well, how about we reduce melee dmg dealt by female player characters? Let’s go for the whole 9 yards, right?
Seriously, we aren’t rolling what’s supposed to be the world’s tallest people. At character creation, the tallest woman should be as tall as the tallest man, because the tallest man you can create isn’t supposed to be the tallest man in the world. No, it’s sexism, it’s rife in the media (especially games), and it shouldn’t be trivialized as social commentary. Look at the paintings coming out of the Renaissance, even if the women were tall as or taller than the men, the men were depicted as taller. This is a theme in Western Art, and it did not just stop with GW2. The past makes the present.
Sure men are generally taller than women, but with stuff like this, I’ll come out and say it, it’s generally [subtle] sexism. These GW2 characters are art. In Western Art, which can trace it roots back to African, or “Ancient Egyptian” art, women are often depicted as shorter, even if they were taller in rl, or had a higher or equal status to the man. In a notable exception, Queen Hatshepsut was depicted as tall (equal to a man), which was rare.
I wouldn’t call height difference portrayed in art, media and games to be sexism.
If so, why is that? Why can’t female humans be as tall/ taller than males?
I’d like to reverse the process. I’ve truly enjoyed playing the game and so will buy $100 in gems to support the game on their one year anniversary!
I realy think I should be thanking Anet not the other way around.
Well you’re helping keep their butt in business. You spent $60 on their game…. there is a good reason that almost after every transaction the seller says “thanks for your business,” and at the bottom of receipts it often says “Thank You” etc.
If Guild Wars 2 was totally free 100%, then yes, I’d thank them. They make a good game, but I am not going to thank them for my business.
Then again, in the end, it’s a symbiotic relationship so Anet and the customers should thank each other.
If you don’t know how to play a thief or know how to fight one, I suggest you play one because it is much harder then it sounds.
Also, I’d wager that a lot of people who complain about Theives are likely WoW refugees who are used to getting eaten up by Rogues in the BG. I played a Rogue for years in that game, and a GW2 Thief takes more skill (imo).
How many people still play alone?
I play alone. I have a guild, but it’s just one I created, and I am the only member. Seriously, sometimes it does get a bit lonely in Tyria, which is why I am always on the lookout for one or 5 good people to be in the guild with me. However, in the end, in this game like rl, I have always been somewhat of a loner, so it’s fine.
Most guilds, no offense, I have found are full of whiny babies – or have a bunch of rules on what you can and can’t say because people will be offended. Like rl, I’d rather just deal with being on my own. Indeed, with respect to why I am usually guildless in this and other games, the line between games and “rl” is starting to blur (the aforementioned “babies” and easily offended in guilds just like rl social circles), but that’s a convo for another day.
Mesmers are almost as fun to kill as magical warriors, oops, I mean Guardians.
I am not even a Pvpro, but I love assassinating people on the Thief. You just know they are on the other side of the screen like, “kitten, kitten! Kitten my kitten you mother-kittner.”
Other games have offered lifetime membership for around $200. They had subscriptions then moved to a F2P model. When that happened they gave their members the equivalent of ‘gems’ per month to equate to what their sub would have cost. For example, if GW2 cost $15 per month to play, a lifetime member would have been given $15 in gems per month for the life of the game.
If you could pay $200 now and get $15 per month in gems for the life of the game, would you pay it? It would take just over 13 months to start seeing a profit from your investment but from there on in you’d be better off if you were a regular gems purchaser.
That’s over a year! I might not be playing GW2 then, or I might not even be alive then (or tomorrow). Nah, I’d just rather have a kitten-load of gems now. Splurge!
Look bud, take a bit of time to check the wiki and you’ll find them. Stop being silly, you’re about to make me go crazy on these boards.
I hope you are joking and realize that the thread isn’t about their actual location.
Seriously, relax. Just because I made reference to the location of the dragons doesn’t necessarily mean I thought that’s what OP was referring to in the strictest sense. Still, on a level, the dragons are just doing their own thing, relaxing. Head on over to the wiki to learn more about the dragons. I thought I was being clear with the sarcasm, especially when I started talking about how people on the forums can be goofy, lol. You’re cool – no doubt you’re fun to be around, but you (lol) you came off like a stiff when you said “actual location” like we need to make use of GPS on these forums or in this game. It’s not common to hear people speak like that, not in this context at least. Who does that, mentions “actual location” in such a way except for maybe a fighter pilot going over orders of engagement, “Foxtrot Alpha Charlie Tango… I got an actual location. Clear to engage? Over.” No way, man, it’s not like that – I was just having a bit of fun. Still, I must warn you, don’t think that you can pull the verbal wool over my eyes, as I have a command over the language.
Level cap: if increased, what are the impacts?
in Guild Wars 2 Discussion
80 is far too many levels. Far more than are necessary. In fact, I think levels altogether are an antiquated system that should stay in WoW and D&D where they belong. I’d so much rather see skill-based character progression than simple, stupid XP accumulation for levels (there are games out there like this – and one notable one I can think of is 10 years old…so it can be done, and done well).
I almost didn’t buy GW2 when I found out that the level cap at launch is 80. Seriously? What a no-brainer way to play. And at launch! It didn’t even have to take years and several xpacs to get it to 80!
Increase in level cap = I permanently go play something else. So that is the impact, as far as I am concerned.
I actually agree with this. Skill-based sand-boxy systems are much better for an MMO; it’s amazing that the class/level system has remained the dominant paradigm for so long the way it has.
I think it may have been carried for a few years by WoW.
Why is leveling even needed? Leveling is pointless and a complete waste of time.
…because it is a complete waste of time, you answered your own question. It’s a time sink. Besides, for some, it adds a sense of progression, brutish though it may be.
Think about leveling in this game for PvE. It pretty much amounts to play or pay.
Fair enough, but on the other side of the coin, I have actually stayed away from other MMO’s that have gone and done away with the traditional levelling system. I tried them and got bored. To each their own.
That’s one of the things I like about GW2: It has the option for traditional leveling for those who enjoy it, but it also provides the option to [almost] bypass leveling by crafting. I also dig how you can get pretty much insta-capped for PvP.
TBH GW2 actually kinda rocks, IMO. I don’t know why this game doesn’t have like 12 million subscribers. Oh yes I do, it’s the same reason Aniello Desiderio’s youtube videos only have like an average of 70k views while Lady Gaga has a few hundred million…. But I won’t go there more than I already have. ;-)
A lot of people like the game, but to them it has glaring flaws and they express that in a way that, in typical gamer fashion, comes off a bit too strong. Words like “suck,” “fail” and “I hate…” are not as strong in gamer speak as they are in other hobbies, not in my experience at least. Gamers are, like, ultra critical too; If the heavens opened, and fanfare played as giant hand delivered this game and it gave one an orgasm and made one feel like the best drugs in the world, all while improving health and adding years to one’s life gamers would still whine.
Also, on another level, some people are simply addicted to games like this. I am reminded of the guy sipping whiskey while puffing a cigarette telling me how much he hates cigarettes and how, as the Irish song puts it, “whiskey you are the devil.” Addiction.
Quoted for truth… totally agree, +1 on this.
I hate leveling in the traditional sense. Besides leveling is almost nullified by the fact I can just buy a few gem cards and get though it in a few short hours by crafting. It’s not in place or needed to “help one learn how to play.” Even if it was, by level 20 I’m like “alright, I get it!” It sucks not being able to do an instance simply because I “am not level x.” I started a thread on all this once, and most people disagreed, many folks love leveling – and I respect that. For me, though, it’s the worst part of MMORPGs. When expressing that people often say “well these aren’t they type of games for you.” Yes they are, I love RPGs, but traditional levels get in the way of fun. There are better, and more interesting ways to progress a character. It does not have to be by levels.
I, too, was upset when I learned GW2 had 80 levels as well.
