Forced PvP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sarisa.4731

The percentage is 93% PvE only, 7% WvW.

The biggest problem with having the explorer requiring the WvW maps is that you get people taking up very limited WvW space who do not actually want to participate. Many servers have massive queues, which is bad for both explorers trying to get in, and for PvP’ers who can’t get in because an explorer is in the map.

Primarily PvE players don’t like it because of the forced PvP. WvW players don’t like it because of space taken up by non-participants. The two should be separated and given different achievements. PvE world completion should remain the Gifts of Exploration. WvW completion could be given a bunch of tokens to get a headstart.

There was a glitch in beta (and a guildmate experienced it once in live) where sometimes you would get an item and it would be invisible in your inventory. A re-log would make it appear. That may or may not be the case here.

Jumping puzzles are my most favorite part of this game

I think I like Chaos Crystals the best. Swashbuckler’s Cove, Branded Mine, Conundrum Cubed, and Pig Iron Quarry are also ones I enjoyed.

Geomm’s Lab in Metrica was probably the most satisfying to finally solve.

I do the Lion’s Arch ones regularly, as those chests scale to your level.

A few need fixes. Only Zuhl doesn’t (pre-patch, haven’t checked post) have a usable chest, and has a griefing method that people can use to cause instant respawns of the champion and veterans.

Conundrum Cubed and Chaos Crystal Cavern have chests that only allow the person who opened them to loot. There may be a couple more, but I don’t know off the top of my head.

I think you mean Dreamdark Enclave, it must have been called Dark Reverie in a beta or something because both names exist in the wiki but the in game map says Dreamdark Enclave.

Dark Reverie is the name of the jumping puzzle achievement.

I’m also in the same situation. I have my full exotic set, transmuted to look the way I like (norn tier 1 light cultural). I have my two Mystic weapons. I have 3 of my 5 jewel slots maxed out, and I’m just 2 Ectos away from completing the last two..

I do not like PvP, so I have no desire to get the 2500 or so kills in WvW necessary to get the 500 trophies needed for a legendary.

All I’ve done with karma is buy a pirate dagger for the skin to put on my Mystic Spike. Still have 89k and nothing to spend it on. Just hoping it has more of a use in an update.

Yeah, you want to make sure you have done all the jumping puzzles in the various areas as well.

Hmm, does this count toward the star? No big, I love doing them, I just wasn’t aware.

No, aside from the three you need to get a vista or skill point. Those three are Tribulation Scaffolding, Wall Breach Blitz, and Vizier’s Tower.

The star and the two Gifts of Exploration come from completing the vistas, hearts, points of interest, waypoints, and skill challenges on every PvE map, the six major cities, the four WvW maps, and the Chantry of Secrets.

The achievements are from opening up areas (the white names). The only jumping puzzle you must do to open up a name is Morgan’s Spiral, and at least step into Dark Reverie after it. Several of the jumping puzzles have their name open up and count for the achievements, but you just need to step into their areas (some you can just walk near).

Does homosexuality in Sylvari feel rather forced?

in Sylvari

Posted by: Sarisa.4731

Sarisa.4731

Some clarifications…

Sex is physical. Sylvari do have sexual organs as per the original lore introductions. They cannot have children, but they do have functional organs, and they are distinctly ‘male’ and ‘female’.

Gender is mental, how you perceive yourself. Sylvari in game seem to be a bit more fluid than other races, but they still appear have distinct ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ identities and roles. Variances in behaviour and dress are absolutely there, possibly to mimic the humans they are based partly off of.

Sexuality is attraction. Sylvari are open in this regard, not caring (much, individual preference probably plays a part) about either physical sex or gender identity in who they are attracted to. This particular aspect is also confirmed in the Sylvari lore articles. Unlike other races, or a large part of real life, there is no dislike, non-acceptance, or outright hatred of people who are “wired” to prefer same gender/sex relationships as opposed to opposite.

I’ll throw a thank you in as well.

“Fixed a camera bug which occasionally caused the camera to get too close to the player’s backside.”

However…what exactly did this address? I am intrigued.

When doing some jumping puzzles, like Troll’s End in Lion’s Arch, Spelunker’s Delve in Caledon Forest, and a few others, especially with a tall character like a norn or charr…

You would end up having the camera butt up directly behind the character’s head, or off to a side. It would be extremely difficult to navigate the jumps due to most of your vision being blocked.

Now (after doing Troll’s End last night post-patch on my norn), during those portions, the camera will go inside the character but without obscuring your screen. There is still the “jumping” camera glitch, where in certain positions, the screen will constantly jitter.

Unfortunately, the spot that used to be safe to fall into from is now a new insta-kill point. Getting to a particular part of the fall will instantly do massive damage, without you hitting anything. I reported it, but couldn’t get it at the exact spot that it triggered.

Staying fairly far left kept me alive on the second try tonight.

Jumping Puzzles Giving no Loot

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Conundrum Cubed also has the “chest is open” bug like Chaos Crystals. Only one person in a fairly significant period of time can loot it. Another puzzle did too, but unfortunately I can’t remember which it was (I did report it however).

Only Zhul has a boss fight with a champion after getting the achievement, but the chest never becomes active to use. Another issue with Only Zhul is the champion’s spawn is controlled by stepping across an invisible line, and someone can immediately trigger the champion fight after a group kills it.

Line of Warding Moving Friendly NPCs

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Sarisa.4731

Sarisa.4731

There has been a group of people on Henge doing this as well. Then they brag about it…

In the past few days, they moved Miyani from beside the Mystic Forge to a spot hiding behind a group of other vendors by the Black Lion area.

They moved the vendor who sells tools and salvage materials from the foot of the stairs in front of the bank to inside the bank near the banker.

They moved the repair person across the bridge from the trainers onto the side near the trainers (close to the forge).

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the broken skill points and events are due to this behaviour. I also won’t be surprised if the moves get more abusive as time goes by without it being fixed. I haven’t had a chance to witness the group moving the NPC’s yet, but I have at least reported the bug.

to all eles who hate underwater combat

in Elementalist

Posted by: Sarisa.4731

Sarisa.4731

During my run to 100% map completion, I really disliked water combat, and would dread having to do another underwater heart. I don’t mind it as MUCH now, but I still prefer land combat over water.

A large part of this was that Whirlpool did NOT function in PvE until I was over 90% done the world, and already capped.

Another large part is that certain attacks will miss for unknown mysterious reasons. Electric 1, for instance, along with some other skills have trouble hitting objects and mobs on the bottom unless you’re in exactly the right place. Trying to hit poison spewing urchins that are blocking the way to a skill point can be frustrating.

The “I moved 2 feet, now I’ll reset!” issue was a bit less prevalent when I was doing the majority of my levelling as compared to now. This is an issue that needs fixed.

The aggro range issues can also be frustrating, especially when your best skills can cause you to travel into another group’s range.

It also took a bit longer for me to adjust to it than most (male) players, as depth perception and sensing exactly where I am spatially doesn’t come quite as naturally. Water 5 is a bit tough for me to judge exactly my distance from a mob, and how far I will travel. I’ve had several times (even still) where I’m just a little off on my aim, and using the skill sends me flying and doing no damage, or I launch from too far away or too close, and waste most or all of the damage potential.

Surprise pulls (from Risen or Krait who aggro from behind) and water 3’s teleport also momentarily disorient me and it can take a second or two to figure out where I am.

Ele’s have a few nice bursts (Whirlpool, water 5), some excellent CC (earth 4 and 5, electric 4 and 5, water 3 and 4, fire 3), and good support. The problem is that when those bursts are on timer, and you don’t need the CC at the moment, combat feels weak and time consuming.

The first dungeon

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sarisa.4731

Sarisa.4731

1 – Will the plot eventually lead me there so I don’t have to worry about going all the way to Charr territory right now just to do this dungeon?

You should receive an in-game mail telling you about the dungeon. I can’t remember if they were tied to just hitting certain levels, or if it was dependant on getting to specific chapters of your storyline.

2 – Does everyone in your group needs to physically travel to the dungeon entrance or is there some sort of mechanic where someone can summon the rest of the party into the dungeon?

Everyone has to be on the same map, and in the same version of the map (in the case of overflows) for the prompt to come up when the “leader” enters the dungeon. You don’t have to specifically all be in front of the dungeon.

3 – Is it hard to find ppl to dungeon with? I don’t have a guild yet.

Guild is best, but there are PUG’s for it. There is no real “LFM” system like in other games. Groups outside of guild/friend runs are usually advertised in mapchat. The best non-guild runs I’ve seen will have a Vent or Mumble set up to facilitate communication, but these are not common.

arcane wave or anouther stun breaker

in Elementalist

Posted by: Sarisa.4731

Sarisa.4731

In PvE open world (S/D), I tend to run Glyph of Storms, Lightning Flash, and Arcane Wave. Glyph of Storms for the amazing blindness storm in earth; Lightning Flash as a stun breaker and to better position Churning Earth, and Arcane Wave as an extra might stacker (and quick enemy tagger for events).

I can Arcane Wave out for either more condition removal (Cleansing Fire), another stun breaker (Armor of Earth or Mist Form), or Arcane Shield if necessary, but that is less needed in the open world.

I also use the auto-Armor of Earth trait, which is definitely a lifesaver.

Dungeons I tend to run Glyph of Storms (blindness is still good there), Mist Form or Armor of Earth, and Glyph of Renewal. In dungeons without cheap tricks, Arcane Shield instead of Glyph of Renewal.

Switching servers will not be possible eventually. You can only change now once per day, so you have to know ahead of time which server to swap to.

Many servers have massive queues, especially for the Eternal Battleground. If you have someone exploring, that takes a spot that someone kittenally wants to PvP can use. That essentially weakens your server.

I really never get Black Lion Keys

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sarisa.4731

Sarisa.4731

They are obtained from:
Certain story missions. You’ll earn 5-6 from this over the life of the character, I don’t remember exactly how many.

A chance of receiving one on a map completion, seems about a 60/40 or so chance of 3 lesser transmutation stones vs. a key.

Extremely rare world drops. I’d probably put the drop rate at a minimum of 1:10,000.

One of the possible store item drops from the chests themselves.

Possible bonus from the daily achievement chest.

Gem Store.

The chests give:

Some shop item. The best ones are probably Black Lion salvage kits, instant repair canisters, and top end transmutation stones (5 of them). Others are Black Lion tools, 1-use bank access, 1-use trading post access, another key, and a few other items.

Some 1-hour buff item.

3 Mystery tonics. These were originally 3 of a specific tonic.

As it currently stands, the chests do not give valuable enough items to warrant buying keys for gems. It would be better to just spend the gems on the items you want directly, rather than “play the lottery”.

‘Been There, Done That’ must be earned on one character, since it specifically specifies so. ‘Been There, Done That’ requires both 100% map completion from the map elements in the open world, WvW, and Chantry of Secrets; and unlocking all the explorer achievements (Kryta, Ascalon, etc.). Just an aside, growing up I worked part of the year at a relative’s hunting/fishing cabin business in extreme northern Maine.

It was black bear country, and black bear are rather large animals, with big males upwards of 400 pounds. They, however, can be incredibly quiet when they want to be. We had several times where we happened to turn around and noticed a bear following us, without ever hearing a sound. During the season, while sitting on a tree stand, you would often hear nothing and suddenly a bear was there in front of you down below.

Even the monstrously huge (800 pound plus) and clumsy looking moose could be very quiet if they wanted to be.

Being large and bulky does not necessarily that someone can’t sneak up on things. Thievery and infiltration also do not always involve sneaking around.

There are 202 skill challenges in the open world and the four WvW maps (according to the wiki, I can’t log in right now to verify). You also get 1 skill point per level, so 80 to reach cap. You also gain 1 skill point for each “level” you earn at cap.

I haven’t calculated the total skill point costs to learn every skill, but this quoted post from Zahmahkibo.6375 seems right (or very close). You will earn more skill points than you can use. (Not sure why the quote attribution doesn’t work)

…Humans and Sylvari pay 175 points for their full range of skills, I believe, while Charr and Asura pay 178, and Norn pay 182.

I’ve been playing primarily one norn character since preview. My run to 100% map completion plus all I earned from levels pre and post 80 have given me enough skill points to buy every skill, spend 50 on crafting a Mystic Forge weapon, and I still have 81 left over.

Umka:
Prowl will give you approximately 6 seconds of stealth when you activate it. You’ll become visible for approximately 4 seconds afterwards, then can activate Prowl again. You can use Prowl three times during the transformation due to skill timing and cooldowns.

You can revert to norn form by using the 0 skill again.

In open world PvE, using stealth will almost immediately drop aggro. You can still take damage from a mob’s AoE circles if they started casting prior. It’s quite useful to get past a big swarm to get to a point of interest or commune skill point.

If no, whats the point of getting 175/175 krytia achievement?
Title?

There are two parts.

To get the star next to your name, and the two Gifts of Exploration, you need to get all of the vistas, points of interest, skill challenges, hearts, and waypoints in all of the open world PvE maps, the Chantry of Secrets, and in the four WvW maps.

To get the “Been There, Done That” title, you must complete the area completion achivements. These are Kryta 175, Orr 60, Maguuma 165, Shiverpeaks 172, and Ascalon 175. I believe you need the above 100% map completion as well, but I am not certain.

What would you want out of your "end-game" experience

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sarisa.4731

Sarisa.4731

Note that these are personal opinions only, and do not have any effect on anybody else. My experiences lead me to seek out a game that is different from all the other styles out there.

I’m an older, female player, who has played electronic games since the late Atari 2600, early NES days. I also play German style board games, traditional card games, and deck-building games, and co-ops like Arkham Horror at a local game store. Online play started with MUD’s, then to 2d hobby games (mostly PvP oriented), then to some F2P grinders, then to the PvE oriented cooperative DDO (with a significant gear grind, but not much treadmill until the expansion ruined it). I’ve participated in the gear treadmill before, and GW2 gives me the chance to break out of that routine.

PvP is the primary “end-game” for a lot of people, but I don’t feel it is for me. I’ve become quite a bit less competitive as I age, and I want to avoid the typical trash talk, “serious business” attitudes that tend to revolve around the PvP scene. WvW is mildly interesting, but since I’m on Henge, a highly skilled WvW server, I’d rather not weaken the server in general by taking a spot in WvW that a better skilled and experienced player could use.

Going by the Bartle profiles, I’m primarily an explorer, with moderate socializer, and mild achiever traits.

Exploration is what I love best, and that is the thing that GW2 PvE does best. I like finding hidden areas, trying to find my way into or onto an area, discovering a chest stashed away in some hidden cave, and triggering uncommonly run events. I want to experience everything the open world has to offer. Even areas I’ve been to dozens of times, I’m still discovering something new in them.

I socialize a good bit with my guildmates, and occasionally with people I meet wandering the world. My primary thing, though, is helping them in whatever way I can. Although I do not enjoy the dungeons, if they really need the help I will go. I’ll bring my capped, almost fully equipped Ele wherever they are levelling, just because it’s fun for me. I made an alt, but I still prefer to play my Ele as I’m most comfortable with that character’s capabilities and controls.

For “achievements”, I don’t do them to compete with others, or be the “first” in anything. I just set personal goals for myself, and try to achieve them. It’s a personal challenge.

My typical play in the evenings is either helping out a guildmate or friend; wandering around in some area trying to find more hidden treasures/areas/etc; or working on the personal goals I set. There are a number of events (especially metas) that I missed the first time through an area, so I’m trying to experience all of those as well.

As of yet, I am still not bored with GW2. As long as there are still hidden things in the world, still friends and guildmates who want company or help, and still things for me to personally achieve; I will not be bored.

PVE scaling

The bandits are probably a little too strong, too quickly. The 15-25 area bandits feel like they’re more appropriately for 25-35 areas.

They do, however emphasise the importance of condition removal which is vital throughout the game. They also emphasise the importance of switching utility skills depending on the situation.

For the bandits, it’s generally the bow and pistol users that are most dangerous. This is counter to a lot of other games, where non-caster PvE ranged mobs tend to be less dangerous.

If you have a skill that provides projectile reflection (and many professions do), that will help punish them. As said, blinds (for single large shots, less effective on multi-shot attacks), interrupts (daze, stun, knockdown, fear) when they get ready to fire off a big barrage, ranging yourself while using terrain to your advantage, and saving your dodges for the largest/nastiest attacks if you can passively heal minor hits can help.

Some hearts are hard to see on the map unless you scroll in all the way. There is one in Queensdale like that, and a few in the higher level maps, but I can’t remember if there is a heart like that in Caledon Forest or the Plains of Ashford.

Note that some can also be underground, so be sure to check all the layers of a map. Also, be sure to use the scouts, as they will put unfilled hearts on the map even on undiscovered regions.

The first part of your storyline is not a heart on its own, it just requires you to complete one heart in your starting area. It can be any heart in that region.

100% map completion is definitely possible for the entire world, for any race.

I only have issue if:

There is no “tell” at all.

The reaction window is so short that you can’t effectively dodge while having to pay attention to all else that’s going on (mostly for huge events)

Or when an ability is spammed so much that you drain your stamina before having any chance of killing it.

So who else has made their norn max height?

I wanted my Ele to be obviously norn, but not be so tall that it impaired my ability to do jumping puzzles and fight indoors as much. I went with just under medium height.

Map Completion and WvWvW...why force PVP on us to complete PVE?

finish you exploration at 3am in the morning, they have a graph somewhere showing queue times, queue when it says no one else is on.

That doesn’t matter on some servers, especially those with high Asia/Pacific populations. There are queues reaching 50+ at all hours of the day and night.

Note that I’m a PvE player, so all my opinions are in that regard. I do not enjoy sPvP. While I somewhat enjoy WvW, I’m not going to jump in WvW and weaken my server by taking a spot that someone who is better than me, and enjoys WvW more could use better.

Profession:
80 Elementalist: 8.5/10 – Thoroughly enjoyable to play, and a great challenge in parts (especially solo in Orr). Score would be higher with a better trait design, and a bit better reward for the higher effort to play.

29 Mesmer: 6.5/10 – I greatly enjoyed this profession in BWE3, but between the nerf in phantasm health, and overall being weaker feeling in general in PvE in live as compared to beta.

Gameplay:
Controls 9/10 – Some minor issues, especially with the camera and very tall and very short characters. Otherwise, rather responsive and intuitive.

Exploration 9/10 – Very fun. The only drawback is that some areas are incredibly difficult due to high densities and high respawn rates of obnoxious mobs (large parts of Orr, some dredge areas). Some bugged chests.

Events/“Questing” in the open world 7.5/10 – The lower score is due to the large number of bugged events, skill challenges, and a few broken hearts. It’s sad to see previously working events and skill challenges in 1-15 areas now broken. The ease for botting to happen in some events also degrades it a bit. It’s also a bit sad to see broken chests at the end of certain difficult jumping puzzles. Fixing the bugs and issues with events, skill points, and the like will boost this up to 8.5/10 or 9/10.

I’m of mixed feelings about the “zerg” nature of some events. In some ways, it’s fun to have those large many-vs-many battles. In other ways, the increased challenge of shortmanning (3-5) big boss events like the Queensdale Wasp Queen, Iron Marches Branded Army, or some of the mid-level champion grade group bosses is a LOT of fun and feel more satisfying.

1-70 Play “Experience” 8.5/10 – There is a lot of variety in areas, and you’re not really forced to go any particular place if you do not wish to. Most hearts give you multiple ways to complete, so that if you want a break from fighting, you can do so. There is enough available experience to easily level yourself without having to do much grind, and completing hearts gives you a reasonable amount of spending money.

70-80 Play “Experience” 6/10 – Frostgorge Sound is enjoyable. Orr is not. It’s a challenge, yes, but there is simply too much trash, at too high of respawn rates, with way too many obnoxious abilities (pullback, condition explosions, spammed blind, cripple, lightning fast run speeds). You’re practically forced to Orr as it has the highest karma available outside of WvW, and is the only place to have a good chance of getting many of the better crafting ingredients.

Crafting 6/10 – A lot of good can be made, but there is also a lot of junk. Crafting is a huge money sink. Disciplines are inconsistent as to their difficulty at the current time.

Dungeons 4/10 – While they have a lot of potential, right now they are far too much grind for what they’re worth. I don’t feel all the cheap tricks and fake difficulty aspects are worth getting through to reach the difficult and fun parts. The reduction in rewards greatly reduced my desire to run these. They’re only worth doing in organized guild groups where everyone is on voice.

Community 8/10 – In game community is one of the best I’ve seen in any MMO. It was even better in preview. What I reduced the score for was that there is nothing that really creates communities. You get ad-hoc groups together, do a few events, and then break up. It’s difficult to “connect” with your fellow players outside of guilds. Another issue is that while ArenaNet got rid of most of the ways that players can grief one another, there are still a few ways, and those “tricks” are being done more and more.

Economy 6.5/10 – Money sinks are essential. I feel that they are a bit too much at the present time. Playing normally, without spam-farming Orr events, it can be difficult to build up a reasonable supply of currency to spend on levelling up crafting and optimizing your equipment. It seems as if a lot of the level 80 aspect is to get you to buy gems to earn money, but the gold you trade the gems for has to come from somewhere. I don’t want that gold to come from stolen accounts, bots, or exploits.

(Edit: Forgot the economy section)

Thoughts on Norn personal stories?

‘Got in a Fight’ has a pair of brutal boss fights, and some others that are challenging but not unreasonable. The writing had nothing glaringly bad, and everything seemed “norn-ish”.
