I’m asking this because I want to know if it’s worth using Primal Reflexes when I go Zerg Surfing in WvW. I’m running 30/20/20/0/0 and I don’t feel the Pet-based Skirmishing Adept traits are worth it.
I have heard people say that they don’t but then these 2 came up:

So how do I protect my pet when I have to dodge the boss’ one-shot attack while meleeing with my pet?
(edited by Sarision.6347)
Can’t imagine that they would literally increase the fury duration and not swiftness duration too, and why would they want to do it anyway?
Pretty sure the tooltip needs fixing.
Depends on whether you want a pet or not.
Holland, we’re talking about in dungeons, not overworld.
Running nothing but bears and longbow (and maybe even shortbow) in dungeons. Not only are you doing kittenty damage, you’re also not supporting your teammates nor receiving support from them.
False, except for the kittenty damage, that is true, having an AoE condi cleanse and AoE weakness + a damage sponge (bears can tank bosses like a mofo), not to mention it’s not hard to run in and out of long range to drop healing spring for your melee allies, you’ve got 10 vuln you can maintain by yourself, and an AoE cripple and a KB, not to mention your other weapon. You can also run spirits if you want (i run the elite spirit for the AoE rez, condi cleanse and heal), and then if you take Healers Clarity and Mercy Runes you rez people extremely fast, rez them to half health, and then gain swiftness so you can get back to where you need to be (or to another dead person) quickly, that and S&R and you’re a one man rezzing team.
Not to mention you yourself are tanky as hell if you’re going supporty….
The problem is, do Bearbows do this? Do they even take some of their time to run up to the melee to drop a Healing Spring or hell, even run up halfway to drop Frost Spirit (that is, if they even carry it in the first place). And sitting at 600+ doesn’t grant the rest of the party Spotter (again, if they even bring it in the first place).
Or hell, do they even do a single thing of what you mentioned?
-snip-
The problem is that most Bearbows don’t even carry Spotter and Frost Spirit.
If one can’t stomache sword auto, then use GS instead. It may does less damage, but it’s easier to use, and you still surpass longbow in damage by stacking.
The GS dmg is just so low that it’s a worse thing to do in my opinion than using a Bear. Not wanting to use the sword is understandable, but meleeing with the Shortbow is better than using the GS.

Guang may have exaggerated, but he has a point, and AndrewSX said it: Most ranger are bad because of their “I pewpew; pet tanks” mindset. That lazy style may get them through Overworld PvE, but it will not prepare them for dungeons. Yes pets are underachieving in dungeons, but if these Bearbow Rangers aren’t going to adapt, then they shouldn’t whine when they are kicked from groups.
Yeah I pretty much gave up on SB.
Wouldn’t mind if Eagle Eye extends it back to 1200.
You should probably try to learn and stick with sword first. See how it ticks.
It’s annoying to click 1 all the time, sure, but maybe the solution would be not to rely on sword as a active damage output but as a disengager.by pairing up with a torch, you can easily activate fire armor while simultaneously watching the enemy burn away. If you build around condition damage the burning will take care all the damage and you only need 1 for crippling them on top of the fire.
I have no interest in running condi builds.
I guess I’m just an idiot for overestimating PvPers’ skills. I thought deselecting target -> Pounce -> Monarch’s Leap -> turn around -> Hornet Sting makes a great escape, but I guess I’m wrong.
And is the loss of a 3/4s evade a big blow to our sustain? People have been asking to tone down the evade spam.
Whatever, I’ll go back to forum lurking then.
(edited by Sarision.6347)
Ugh, no, Why don’t you just completely ruin ALL our weapon sets while you’re akitten
So what don’t you like about this idea? The only thing you’re missing is evade from Serpent’s Strike, but to compensate for that, you get more movement out of 2 and 3.
I must admit, I’ve been trying to learn the sword, but I always go back to GS because I don’t want to keep clicking 1’s all the time.
Anyway, the goal of this rework is to remove the leaps from the auto and at same time reduce evade spam in PvP. Yes this will most likely kill bunker builds (unless going back to dagger, but #4 will probably cause conflicts). Keep in mind that I know nothing about PvP save for what I’ve read in PvP Forum, so please go easy on me.
Basically what I propose is to simply take a page from both warrior and thief swords:
- Slash -> Kick -> Serpent’s Strike – Kick will have the leap (and possibly the cripple) removed, and SS will have a simpler animation with no evade and appropriate poison duration depending on the length of the chain. In short the chain becomes just like any other chains.
- Monarch’s Leap -> Hornet Sting – Simple swap just like thief sword. No other change save for maybe increasing the time before HS reverts back to ML.
- Pounce -> Stays the same except with a recharge of 10s. Increasing the range is tempting, but comboing this with #2 seems OP and will get the same treatment as ele’s RtL. Another possible change is upping the coefficient, but GS will likely become garbage.

Cleave is supposed to hit maximum of 3 targets.
But hearing that our true AoE skills only cap at 3 is disheartening.
If you talk to any of the top pvpers, they know nothing, absolutely nothing, about ranger. All they know is that ranger relies heavily upon passive ai (something very high skilled players despise) and that rangers are super easy to play (even though they aren’t, they only see the builds that are the strongest, which happen to be extrememly simple while effective).
As someone doesn’t play PvP, I agree with you, because that’s exactly what I saw in the PvP forum.
Would people be open to the idea of pets rallying from a Ranger kill and maybe add death penalty to prevent the abuse? Or would this lead to other problems?
Like for example, your pet goes down, and after 3 seconds you kill something, then the pet rallies. The next time the pet goes down and you make another kill, it rallies with lower HP due to the death penalty.
I guess it kinda makes sense because we can rally off our pet’s kill.

It really depends. Since GS has a more “traditional” autoattack, it is far more user-friendly than Sword/X. But you’ll eventually want to graduate to Sword/X since it is all-around better than GS, with the exception of bursting.
The Brazil Build is pure Zerker for PvE only.
No you’re not alone Jay, I don’t even see the point of HiPS as it is right now.
If OP can come up with a reasonable skillset for the rifle (not ranged DPS), then I’m all for it. If not, then I’m going to maintain the status quo with weapon selection (with the exception of 3rd mainhand weapon),
Yes I’d like to see improved power scaling for weapons as compensation for pet nerf, but I also want to see improvements to pets.
For pet controls, I’d like to see F1 and F3 merged so that attack and return commands are in one key, and the new F3 becomes the second F2 chosen by the player. So for example, on the wolf the player can use the fear on F2 and KD on F3.
A second thing I would like to see is an evade on return command to help with pet survivability with an ICD to prevent abuse.
They’re making us less reliant on our pets, which is a good thing.
That can also work.
Really, I feel that longbow is in a good place right now. Only the auto and Rapid Fire need tweaks right now.
Btw, did anyone realize that Jon Sharp actually lived up to what he said about longbow in the last SotG? Something about longbow getting additional defense and bar compression?
They should simplify Long Range Shot to two coefficients: one for 0-1000 and one for 1000+.
And Rapid Fire needs cast compression.
Knockdown would be very sweet. :>
I would trade hit, hit, evade for harder hit, harder hit, harder hit.
Moving vulnerability from HS to RF does result in bar compression. Isn’t that what Jon Sharp said back in the last SotG?
It started two months ago.
I did not realize stealth is thief’s unique mechanic.
I’d personally just remove the evade on GS in all modes.
Red Moa’s the only one that’s worth it, the rest need some form of buff to their F2s.
Well you also get +50% increase for Hilt Bash stun/daze and extra crits.
I dunno, I never really liked Runes of Scholar and Peak Strength that much, especially in WvW and PvP.
It’s a high risk, high reward weapon. If you can’t handle it, then stick with GS.
Eh I was thinking of merging Signet of Beastmaster with either Signet Mastery or Beastmaster’s Might and create a new grandmaster trait instead.
Anyways, apologies for pulling the topic off track.
Having another stun breaker is welcome, but am I the only one who wants to see signets reworked to affect ranger first and pet when traited?
Since shortbow is now nerfed, I guess rifle proficiency is now warranted.
Or should conditions themselves require rework?
In terms of formula, duration, etc.
I have melee and ranged on my ranger, and I would like both to be viable, because just as there is no holy trinity in this game, there is also no melee/ranged class. I need to do both, and I’m capable of doing both, and if you need a full on archer only class, there are many other games out there that will satisfy that desire.
In the mean time, this is guild wars 2, which requires kiting, positional warfare, and the tactical skirmishing ability to dance in and out of ranged and melee combat. If you don’t like it, the doors that way ->

+1
Instead of giving us more controls over the pets, I’m firmly in the camp of making the ranger less dependent on the pet. Or in other words, balance the pet around the ranger instead of the ranger around the pet. Pets right now are a major passive mechanic, and everybody hates passive mechanics (remember GW1 Aegis).
To elaborate, pet damage should be nerfed to the ground, while ranger weapons skills buffed to match other professions. If anything the F2 should be the most damaging skill the pet has, and some F2s still need to be reworked (Blue Moa, Stalker, Pigs, etc.).
Ranger traits and utilities need to be tweaked as well, especially signets and condition removal. Signet actives need to focus on ranger first and then pet when traited, and the ranger needs more active condition removals than passives.
I’ll admit, I don’t really have a solution for spirits. What I have in mind is making them like their GW1 counterparts. Eliminate or halve that terrible ICD and increase the AoE to 2000 units. Lastly make the actives targetable within the AoE.
For spamming Nature’s Voice, but I personally don’t run 30 NM, nor do I have any healing power for regen.
Bear is honestly not too bad, I switch out a bear sometimes when solo’ing a camp in wvw… the bear can tank like crazy, I can stay back and buff myself and use barrage to rain down on the targets. Also, bear has great condition removal and weakness.
So I am not sure why bear/longbow is such a bad combo… Having a pet that can aggro the npcs and keep them in one spot long enough to lay down barrage is a pretty good deal imo
Y’know, I just wondered if the situation with bears is same as shortbow. Because all other pets have been nerfed, bears are now seen as attractive.
How about if the ranger in question uses longbow and nothing else in addition to the said bear.
Can anyone tell me where the ranger is better than the other classes?
Troll everyone in PvP with pets I guess? \(o.0)/
My Big 3:
1) Balance the ranger with other professions, and then balance the pets around the ranger.
2) Further improvements to various pet F2s (Mighty Roar, Forage, etc).
3) Sprits radius upped to 1200 units so it stays out of harm’s way while still providing buffs to the party.
There’s a thread on this in the Dungeon Forum.
The devs once said that “the ranger is balanced around pets.”
If you ask me, they should balance the pets around the ranger.
