Lack of valuable loot

I feel like Stormageddon’s use of that quote is misleading without context:

GB: Trading items for gold might be less of an issue for team PvP — where all players get bumped to 80 with standardized gear — but what of the implications for world-versus-world?

O’Brien: Before even answering this question, I want to point out that in Guild Wars 2, being competitive isn’t all about having the best gear. It’s not like you’re going to go into world-versus-world and get smoked because someone else has a godly weapon that you can’t hope to acquire. We’ve always been against that kind of thing.

Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.

To me, it seems pretty clear that, in that specific instance, “we don’t make grindy games” refers to games where you have to grind to compete with other players. In fact, that same paragraph explicitly says that they’re okay with ultra-rare items, so long as the difference they provide is mainly cosmetic.

Say what you will about GW2’s development, the manifesto, or whatever else, but that specific snippet of article seems perfectly in line with what we’re seeing.

Not to me. He mentions grind for gear differentiated by appearance rather than power, and yet ascended is differentiated by stats.

There’s a reason Ascended Gear and Fractals weren’t included at launch. They were created because a noisy part of the playerbase (And apparently sizeable number of players) demanded them. Ascended Gear and Fractals are a violation of the game’s core design philosophy.

My original reply got deleted but I don’t really care, i speak truth. There is no aaah moment in this game for the vast majority of people. Nothing new, nothing exciting, things people are terming loot are just junk items to be salvaged at the end of the day. Any other game they’d be grey or white items that we sell to a vendor or never bother picking up to begin with.

Actually, in WoW they’d be greens and blues, and even purple and oranges that you disenchant because it’s worse than your Tier X (or X-1) Raid Gear.

Every item’s value in GW2 is determined by its supply, and demand. But right now, I think there’s a divide in the player base. Those who only play the game for their loot (Instead of significantly interacting with the Black Lion Trading Post, gem store, and claim ticket vendors) never really get a significant amount of wealth in the first place, and the 1-15 gold per found exotic is “valuable”.

Any time Anet makes a piece of tradeable loot that isn’t nearly impossibly rare, the supply drives the price down to <5 gold, if not merely a handful of silvers. (And the only reason Exotics sell for so much is because of what they salvage into)

if for some crazy reason everyone’s character was wiped, and they had to start over from day 1…. do you think most of the people that didn’t leave would start over ?

that would be the real gauge of how modern day gw2 is performing.

would gw2 hot survive a total reset ?

No. But not because of the leveling experience as much as the fact it would be throwing away years of everyone’s time and effort.

TY for sticking your head out again to address the community M.O.

I was a bit nervous that you all might turtle on the communication after the seething hot flames of anger that was hurled your way from the community for doing what many have asked for.

Its ok. You caught it all in time (unlike SOE did with some of their games), and you handled it correctly by facing it head on. If you keep your word the negativity will fade over time, or at least return to normal gamer grumpy levels LOL.

You might want to let them know that indefinitely on hold does not mean axed completely. Most have no idea of the staggering amount of work that goes into a game or how things are sometimes shuffled to reach deadlines.

Other than that I’ll give the new BL a look and toss my 2 cents in the opinions when its released. But straight up its probably not going to be an easy sell.

Hopefully Mo is looking for the opportunity to re-direct staff back to Legendary development, once things calm down and HoT gets some much-needed polish.
And hopefully, at that time, he’ll tell us development is back on.

I would not expect it anytime soon because they will probably have to do things in incremental steps to avoid fanning the flames of community hostility. They never set out to make people unhappy, but gamers are notorious for hating change “at first” and sometimes come around to accepting a new direction later on.

But we never accepted Trait Unlocking. Never forget, never forgive! :P

If you have altitis, I suggest the Shared Inventory Spaces – at least three, but I find All 5 works for me – I have a Copper Salvage-o-Mat in one, endless/copper Pick and Axe (No need for a sickle) in two others, a Mystic Salvage Kit in a fourth (It has enough uses to be worth a slot when salvaging rares+exotics), and still one free for hotswapping items between characters. (Right now, it has Baubles from dailies achieved on my alts).

And, you might want a musical instrument. I have all of them. I find the Harp to be the best, though.

What is the point of having comms open? It is not like I will have time to type anything, which is why I switch to combat …. if I want to know anything it will be ‘am I hitting this particular thing’. I could give a toss about what the actual number is. I would hide it to give me more screen real estate but occasionally the combat screen is handy, like when I am at extreme ranges. Which pretty much makes any of your damage numbers irrelevant?

No, social interaction is actually instructing people before the fight when you can be civil and they can ask questions. Not yelling at people during it for not doing it another way. Reread my post, I was asking people things before the fight and nobody was answering.

You might not have time to chat/reply on the ground, but there are other players, especially in The Shatterer, who are in other areas of the fight that do have more free time to coordinate commands (Most notably the turrets and turret defense teams) who can see the battle and give directions quickly. If someone’s giving directions, listen to them – On the battlefield, it’s command and obey (even if the commands are just suggestions), not banter back and forth. Furthermore – sometimes a slight loss of personal DPS as you move to mouse-movement and autoattack is worth the greater effect of other players mobilizing to fill the commands.

You know if you’re hitting something because a number will pop up at the point of impact, regardless of range and in front of all intervening models and particle effects. You don’t need the combat log.

it wont have the same feel as a yearly content.

Complete nonsense.

People that like the content will always play, nothing new in Guild Wars 1 PvP but people still play that. Plus Guild Wars 2 constantly has new players coming to it, that will always keep such activities active.

The dungeon queues say otherwise, and they are just as rewarding as SAB.

Considering its a single portal in Rata Sum, it never made sense to me why it wasn’t permanent content, with the new bits to it being new levels.

Honestly, with the drought of content, it would be foolish to not leave it in place.

I don’t have a routine. On days I’m at work for only 8 hours, I generally finish dailies in the morning, sleep, wake up in time for Server Reset Teq, then craft Mithrillium to be turned into Deldrimor Steel for Dawn, then screw around with whatever I feel like doing. Sometimes silverwastes. Sometimes leveling alts. For this week, it’ll be SAB.

On the 12-hour weekends, I log on for dailies and Mithrillium Crafting.

On the free weekend i get every 3 weeks, I run with my little guild.

Is this smart to take back something that players love only 19 days after putting it?
That seems like a collin johanson thing to do…

They actually have a good reason for the taking it back. By time-gating the event, they keep it exciting and fresh (even if it’s just the same few worlds), instead of letting it go stale.

The problem is when, after cycling it out, they forget to bring it back for two full years.

And we all now how people LOOOOOOVE time gated event in a game “where you play the way you want to”…

Generally, they do, when it’s gated right (Such as annual holiday events).

“Can only do this once a day” sucks, especially for people with fluid life schedules. “Only available this time of day/this day of the week” is terrible for people on fixed schedules. But having something be freely available for a week or two or three every few months actually works well – especially if there’s a promise it will return at a regykar time. (I still wish the Festival of the Four Winds would return. I have a lot of Bazaar tokens, and Favor of the Bazaar. Unfortunately, the Zephyrites went and got themselves blown up )

The concept of a traditional MMORPG is dying

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sartharina.3542

If the “Traditional” MMO is about grinding stuff to show off how much you’ve been grinding, I’m not sad to see it go.

For me, an MMO is about meeting and playing with others in a persistent world (Or at least mostly persistent world). Part of the persistence of that world, though comes from other players. And sometimes, playing for the sake of hanging out with other players who are also playing isn’t enough. But it’s still largely about the world.

When it comes to repetitive/“Skinner-box” content, I don’t see it as “Get people to keep playing to keep paying”. Instead, there are two parts of such content – The fun in teaming up with other rookies and veterans alike to overcome the challenge, and then continuing to play after you’re already a veteran at it to give other rookies veterans to play with. For some people, the sake of training new people isn’t enough to get them to keep playing. So, we get the RNG-based “Skinner Box” reward system – If you go strictly for progression, the Grind becomes stupidly obvious and people say “Nope, not even gonna start with this bullkitty”. But if you give the reward reliably the first time the event is done… there’s no point in doing it again to train the next wave of new players wanting in on the challenge.

Everybody here who is complaining about legendries….. Seriously get a life! I recently returned to GW2 after taking a break and trying the new WoD… The fact is as follows…

Anet treats it’s customers a million times better than most MMO’s! No subscription fee required! Game quality is far above ANYTHING out there! In WoW you pay a subscription and are CONTINUALLY given crap for product! Then you get to watch as Blizzard comes out with new PHONE APPS!!! WTF???

So if the devs making new legendries gets your panties in a knot… I say again… GET A LIFE YOU SPOILED LITTLE BRATS!!!

So tell me one thing that Anet treats us better than WoW? Don’t tell me subscription cause this game do not deserve sub.

They haven’t rendered 99% of the game world obsolete the way WoW has.

Elites…Hello!

Don’t compare world best mmo to this game, compare this with Tera or Aion or Rift.

I’ve not even played those games. But I have played WoW. And that game sent me running back here because it’s kittening awful.

Elite specializations haven’t rendered the rest of the game obsolete, even if they’re currently more powerful than the baseline. Even with elites, everyone still has two more trait lines. There are still dozens if not hundreds of players at any given time scattered throughout the game world, from Metrica Province to Fireheart Rise, playing and enjoying the content at all levels of the game. In WoW? Anywhere that isn’t the godkitten Garrison waiting for Raid is a completely empty. And don’t even get me started on the competitive nature of PvE in that game (And not even in the friendly sense of PvP rivalry. The “This person is an active threat to my progress” bullkitten). Also – its combat is painfully tedious and boring.

And I feel sorry for anyone who wasted their time in WoW making Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker, knowing that such a ‘legendary’ blade is more pathetic than trash drops.

Guild Wars 2 has 23 legendary weapons. WoW has none. Next expansion WoW will have 3 legendary weapons for each class – but the expansion after that, back to none.

Get Rid of Precursor Crafting: Problem Solved

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sartharina.3542

Sartharina.3542

This discussion hinges on one thing: how you define the ‘legendary weapons’ problem.

Firstly, I think Anet implemented crafting because they thought it’s what players wanted, otherwise they wouldn’t have done anything and just made new precursors and recipes for new legendaries with the old process.

Secondly, I don’t always believe that players know what they want or are honest about what they want. I really don’t think the majority of people wanted anything but an easier/cheaper/faster way to get a Legendary weapon and pushed the idea of crafting as a way to get that, being naive thinking it would give them the easier/cheaper/faster way they desired.

Therefore, I think the situation we are in, no one wins. Anet wasted lots of time implementing something players told them they wanted but didn’t and increased the work needed to make new legendaries.

I’m with the OP, conceptually. I think future development on new Legendary weapons should just go away, for good though. They little function beyond their Ascended weapon cousins and cosmetically, are unique because of footfalls, but not visual effects.

I think the solution is to offer ways to ‘earn’ the effects that Legendary weapon give and apply them to characters (I would love lava pools on my Condition Guardian or black holes for my theif). That’s a win IMO because it’s another level of visual customization, still gives endgame goals that legendaries do and may be a little simpler to implement for ‘earning’.

But players DID want crafting. What they didn’t want was such a complex, time consuming, hideous gold sink. They boxed themselves into this by creating such a convoluted system.

NOBODY asked for that.

Maybe idiots wanted free/nearly-free precursors. The gold sink had to be there, and anyone expecting otherwise don’t understand how legendaries and precursors work.

People leaving? Perhaps they have embarked on a legendary journey in search of another game.

I’ve tried. Unfortunately, I have yet to find any others that have a free open world that is as “Go anywhere you want, and feel free to revisit fun content!” as Guild Wars 2 is. I have yet to find any game as open at end-game as GW2 is. I have yet to find any game that lets me be a big, kitten dragon-cat like GW2 does.

Frankly, I think the only thing that would make the game better is if they were to remove item levels, having the stats on them scale automatically to level, and just have the game’s gear go White (1-10), Blue (10-30), Green (30-50) Yellow (50-70) Gold (70-80) and Pink/Purple (80)… but only because I hate running the gear treadmill when leveling alts.

I just checked The Division and Black Desert Online and now I understand why my guild is almost dead :/

As far as I can tell, those games are strictly for boring people who like playing boring humans.

… Well, if GW2 continues to lose its boring human population to boring human games, maybe they’ll eventually get around to fixing the non-human armors, because we’re the only ones playing anymore.

The effects aren’t what I have a problem with- the colors are. Not only do I have to coordinate my dyes across armor pieces, but also make sure they don’t clash with my class. And that’s not fun. Especially since my Warrior (Forced Red due to class coloration) is from the blue colored Iron Legion, while my Guardian is from the Red-colored Blood Legion, yet is forced to be Blue (Dabo dee dabo die)

So if the copper fed worked at the same level as the lowest tier crude salvage kit those using it would actually miss out on extra mats and upgrades they could sell. It would reduce the value of the tool.

The upgrades are not worth selling. They’re not worth the inventory space or time it takes to find a merchant to sell to.

The green runes and sigils aren’t worth the inventory space they take up. Not even for people with eight 20-slot boxes. What is so hard to understand about that?

I’m sorry you struggle to manage your inventory. As a bit of advice you should never salvage while in an area where you can’t quickly find vendors, TP, bank, etc. because salvaging can quickly fill up your inventory. Let me explain to you my routine then. I go out in game, do this and that for a few hours. Maybe some fractals, PvE stuff and what not. Then I use my Royal Terrace pass.

Because if I don’t salvage in the field, my inventory floods with items, which, unlike salvaged materials, don’t stack. I salvage to save space.

And the Royal Terrace/Captains Airship pass are even bigger ripoffs than the copper-fed Salvage-o-mat.

Poor understanding of player-base

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sartharina.3542

Sartharina.3542

I think ArenaNet needs a better understanding of their player-base due to the prevalence of certain type of content this game features.

For example, ArenaNet has seemingly designed this game to be played by aquatic creatures, seeing as about 1/4th of the content of this game is underwater, how I get new skills underwater, my character can breath underwater, etc.

However, my findings suggest that roughly 0% of Guild Wars 2 players are mermaids.

Please reduce the amount of underwater navigation I have to do. As a terrestrial being and not a fish, it is unnatural and disorienting. Every time I have to do something underwater, I rush as fast as possible (or log out) so that I can get back on land to continue to play my terrestrial character with my human, non-fish self.

Thank you.

They have reduced the amount of underwater content in the game. HoT areas, Drytop, and Silverwastes have 0 underwater areas, and even Southsun Cove, an island map, has 0 content beneath the waves surrounding it.

What's the bottleneck for new content?

Indefinite suspension is “Canceled until Further Notice”

Actually:
Indefinite- not clearly defined or determined; not precise or exact:
an indefinite boundary; an indefinite date in the future.

Suspended – temporarily prevent from continuing or being in force or effect.
“work on the dam was suspended”

Canceled – to decide or announce that a planned event will not take place; call off:
to cancel a meeting.

Your literal definition of the words and their typical practical use are two entirely different things.

Sigh. If words didn’t have meanings they wouldn’t use them. And believe it or not “cancel” and “indefinitely suspend” mean something different.

“Indefinitely suspend” means “Canceled, but may eventually one day return to it, but not likely.”

I still think that what some of us fail to understand is that this is how game industry works… I explain myself… you should not buy a game because the devs promised to add more content after the release that will compensate what the game is lacking from the start, that is your fault, I’m sorry, but it is true. You can’t trust a company that far because kitten-ups happen and things change and maybe something that they really want to ship never comes to life because they can’t find a way to do it or they need too much time. It was their fault to make some of us continue to think that the ideas, that what was planned was definitive and that it was a promise, to never iterate on the issue saying that they are trying but they can’t be sure themselves to deliver, because that is how making a game works. There’s no magic wand that will make the game interesting and fun, it is a process of trying out, and some times you find that is much better to put something on hold instead of sacrificing the results. Would you prefer the Legendaries to come out half finished? Or broken? OMG anet is shipping half the work done again! That’s what you would read again on the forums.
That in my opinion is what MO is trying to do, he figured out that is not going in the right direction and instead of fake it and make people think that they are doing it, instead of shipping half backed content, he is telling us that they are placing the Legendaries on hold, it does not mean that they will never come, in the future I’m sure that they will return on them but for now they are focusing on something that have better chances to be delivered in a short time and in good state.
Still, even if things are not great recently, I look around and couldn’t find any MMO that keeps me engaged as Gw2, and I’m sure that this is the same for a ot of other people, and that is why we get so upset and feel betrayed but instead of leaving and migrate to another game we are still here complaining.

Expecting MO to say that the Hot release was a bad choice that it was a mess is not something that will ever happen! Just because, if he is still running the company it means he believes that even if things didn’t go as planned it is still a project worth the time. If MO says something like that, then you can be sure that GW2 has no future.

MO is trying to change things, obviously he is trying to do it for the better, not everyone agrees but none of us knows what is happening internally at Anet, what was the extension of the problem.
If things will be really better only time knows.
I will keep playing and if I finish every thing I like in this game, get too kittened off about some release or find something better, I will stop playing the game! If Anet doesn’t deliver any good content the next expansion isn’t worth that name I will not pay for anything else.

It seems you fail to understand how business works.
Customer pays. Provider delivers.
It’s not Customer pays. Prodiver delivers partialy and changes the deal on it’s own without consulting the customer.
It litereally doesn’t matter what the story behind the curtains is. From the customers point the only thing that we should ask is:
Did we get everything that we paid for?
And the answer to it is: no.
It literally doesn’t matter WHY – at least not to us. Same as they don’t care how we got the money to pay for their game we shouldn’t care how they are working on the promoted features.
Don’t sympatize with your seller, because as soon as you do, the seller will use your kindness – which is exactly what was and still is happening with this game.

Exactly for the life of me, I cannot understand people sympathizing with Anet on this one and saying it is ok. This effects everyone that bought the expansion. What if next O’Brien says “we are suspending work on new fractals indefinitely”, will this be OK? What if he said “We are not bringing out Legendary armor as only a small percentage of the player base will actually get the gear” is this ok too?

These features where promised with HoT if he can just drop Legendary weapons he can other features too. Wake up people, as a consumer you should get what you pay for!

The problem here is that they overpromised with HoT, and things aren’t working out. The problem is… the company needed to change 3 years ago (When they first promised new legendaries). Now they’re in a really, really bad crunch on time and hype.

They are already working on expac 2….seriously, why would they do that?

Because that arc of the story requires far more development time and sophistication than a simple Living Story seasonal release. New zones, new elite specializations, new storyline, and possibly even a new race.

Why does this game even have "Shortbows"?

Why do we even have Swords ? Clearly the Greatsword is superior. Let’s just replace all swords with greatswords. Give mesmers something else for it because it would be silly for them to dual wield greatswords.

Swords are one-handed, while Greatswords are two-handed, for starters. Their skins are also radically different. Also, they have completely different gameplay across all classes (And both have uneven distribution across the classes. Reapers can use Greatswords, but not Swords. Revenants can use Swords, but not Greatswords. A guardian with a sword doesn’t play anything like a Guardian with a Greatsword. Swords and Greatswords are both seen on Warriors for radically different uses, and in different combinations with other weapons.

:O

You dont say. I would have never guessed that 2 distinctly different classes use weapons differently. I would have also never guessed that the short bow on ranger plays entirely different than the longbow on ranger.

Look we all get you hate the “Legendary Snafu” but gutting classes for this sorta logic…if one can even call it that is silly.

Also, to the people who didn’t get the joke….I’m sorry in future i will write all responses that have a joke or sarcasm with a /s. I’m told this is how reddit does it.

Ranger shortbow doesn’t play differently enough from Ranger Longbow compared to how Warrior Sword+Shield plays differently from Warrior Greatsword, and far differently than Warrior Mace+Sword. And Greatswords and Swords look and animate differently.

And yes, two classes can be wildly different with the same weapon. So why is the Thief barred from using the same bow skins Warriors and Guardians can use, and vice-versa?

Is this Guild Wars or Elder Dragon Wars...

I dislike the “it’s explained in the lore” response, because it’s totally unnecessary in my eyes. It’s like asking why we never see the character put Pokémon in their pockets, or why Starcraft does not, to my knowledge, have you constructing stars. It’s silly.

Read the lore.

you don’t attract new players expecting guild vs guild pvp by denying it to them with the ‘but it’s the lore’ excuse.

…Did anyone seriously purchase this game because they saw the title and assumed it meant guilds would fight other guilds in a GvG PvP mode?

Because if you did, c’mon, do a little more research next time. There are guilds and there are wars, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the game is focused one gameplay mode by that name.

i would assume that might have been a serious part of it? kind of like making a game called the elder scrolls and having it be about pizza.

Funny you should mention The Elder Scrolls, because it’s more like buying a game titled “Arena” and finding out it’s actually an open-world RPG. And you’d think it would actually involve scrolls that are old to feature prominently in the lore and world

-snip-

… This is missing the point I was trying to make entirely. When I was suggesting Rangers get a new weapon to replace Shortbow, I was actually thinking Dagger, before realizing they already had it (Mainhand dagger for condi damage+swiftness could work, though). Not adding new, bizarre weapons.
