500 crafting and ascended crafting makes me really want to level up some LW & Huntsman to 400 before it goes live.

I see this point as one of the major pro’s to being an engineer. If I found the answer I’d eventually get bored, playing the same thing day after day. Instead, I can play all of those variations, changing every couple weeks to keep it fresh or even to fill a spot in a group. Say you’ve been running grenades for a while but you’re heading into a dungeon with some guildies who are also just dps zerkers. Well, you can change to a support build quite easily. And celestial gear has made it even easier.
So my answer is unfortunately not much of an answer. It’s that I like not “settling in.” I like having all those options.
…though I do find FT/EG very versatile and fun
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Guys please enough with the condition , remember we need more viable direct damage specs…
We do? I thought grenades, bombs, rifle, SD, and FT all scaled well with direct damage. Just because they have conditions doesn’t mean they are condition weapons.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I never had so much fun unlocking a new utility at low levels than with my engineer. You unlock a kit and you get 5 new skills! And every utility is at minimum 2 skills due to our awesome toolbelt. You can basically build yourself around any kit. Find what’s most fun for you and build around it. Or, like others have said, figure out how you want to play (support, dps, bunker, etc) and then build accordingly. GL and welcome.

Portal Gun Kit
1. Shoot foe with mini-portals, causing damage and vulnerability
2. Open portal above target’s head, from which drops an anvil (LoonyTunes style)
3. Open portal beneath yourself and at target location, teleporting you that location.
4. Open portal in mid air that expels pieces of the ground around you at target. Basically port & hurl a piece of the ground at the target. Dazes target if hit from side or behind.
5. (Chain#1) Create portal at current location. (Chain#2) Create linked portal at current location, allowing 2-way travel for up to x allies. (Chain#3) Collapse portals (blast finishers at both locations but no damage). Lasts up 5 mins. Can be attacked and destroyed.

I missed the part of about us having a nemesis. Was that Molten Facility or F&F cuz I kinda missed out on that arc? Can someone fill me in on our nemesis plz?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
In dungeon groups I’ve always got 6x Altruism.
In WvW I swap out for 4x Altruism and 2x Ruby Orbs, but that’s because I’ve got goggles and medkit5 on hand for fury so I get more outa the Orbs.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’ve got 10 extra trait pts. I want a defensive trait. Which should I take? Is one better than the other in WvW but vice versa in dungeons? Or both useless in dungeons? Is Prot Inj better only because it automatically means I get Hidden Flask?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Only 20pts in Tools for an SD build? Wouldn’t the full 30 reduction of the toolbelt cooldown be more important?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
@Obscure et al: Recently rolled SD/rifle build with Goggles, Rifle Turret, and ToolKit. Lotsa fun. What traits did you take? I’m running 10/30/0/0/30 and am just not sure how to squeeze every ounce of damage out of my rifle (since I’ve been a pistol user since day 1). In Firearms I have II, IX, X. Trying to figure out if I should swap out Go For The Eyes for Hair Trigger. And I’ve got Incendiary Powder in Explosives due to my high crit % (and free 100power) but dunno if there’s another line better.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Celestial. It’s a beast .
Guess I’m going to have to drop some serious gold leveling LW to 400 and acquiring all the celestial recipes.
Sucks that Celestial gems can only be socketed into accessories and not armor.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Try another home instance Darkshine. The Grove is nice & small and quick to access. From what I understand, it appears in all home locations but can only be mined once a day.

Unless he’s an Engi and is referring to his starter hobosack?

I’d love a fully laid out swan dive. Or a cannonball. Complete with audible character yell “caaanonbaaaaaaalllllll!”
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Also, open the bags in a low-population zone. This worked for me with the jade tickets. Opened in Citadel and got 2 tix. Made me mad I didn’t get this tip until I’d already opened 2000 coffers with 0 tix.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I don’t think it’s a bit of a mess at all Kairnabel. FT & EG synergize nicely as a damage/support set, and even their traits overlap. TK is a great bundle of defense (shield, cripple) and offense (magnet, prybar, toolbelt). You get a lot of utility out of those kits. Use P/S and you’ve got even more utility with that wonderful shield offhand. My FT build always had EG. Actually, most of my builds have EG lol.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Engineers snatched the rifle out of the Warriors hands, chopped down the barrel, bored it out to a 12 gauge, and proceeded to see what manner of random household appliances they could stuff in it and shoot at people. Solid Slugs that punch through targets? Sure (#1)! Nets that deploy in flight? Totally (#2)! A handful of glass and scrap metal? Sounds delightfully painful (#3)! Fifty times the normal amount of gun powder? That’ll chap some booties (#4)! How about a highly accurate solid rocket booster with a large ejection of propellant capable of launching ya across a ravine!? …Uhh…do you have a permit for that (#5)?
The point is if you think of the Engineers rifle as a pump action shot gun with an assorted array of shells, you may very well change your tune about it. It’s build to get in your enemy’s face…and then remove it…through their rectum.
bahahahahaa! nicely explained. It does feel like a kittenized rifle stolen and modified while a bit high. #4 & #5 should include a maniacal laugh sound considering it’s bonkers to want to fire that kind of weapon.

I don’t like em either. Which is why I sold the ones I got from Sprint. I like free gold. Thank you.

Thanks Mental, that’s a good place to start.
Is toughness > vitality?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Yea I like that hobosack much better than the ones I get from my kits. That’s like the mother of hobosacks. Unfortunately, it’s going to clip with my ToolKit, creating a wonky hybrid kit that looks like crap.
And the jetpack was bar-none the coolest back item Anet has made and bar-none the hardest one to attain.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I just made a Static Discharge build for the first time. Let me tell you, in a drawn out fight or large groups I’m sure grenades are superior. But the amount of spike damage I am doing with SD/rifle and having a couple gadgets on my bar to play with is just fun. The improved & lower CD gadgets now have a place in my heart and they’re becoming a joy.
You can just as easily use P/P with SD, tho with less control. The #4 hits pretty hard, stacks a good burn and #2 actually scales well with power. Trait the pistols, grab some Rampagers gear and try it out.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’ve always been a PvE player but have recently decided to try my hand at WvW. As a PvE-er I have full zerker gear with a variety of trinkets (knights, soldiers, zerk, celestial) sprinkled in as needed for survivability.
I’m going to try a rifle/SD build in WvW first (eventually will try FT & nades I’m sure). I’ll need new gear obviously but what kind of gear/stats should I be shooting for? Is it wise to have at least 20k hp and 3k defense? More? What’s most important, vit or tough?
Also, are there any really incredibly useful traits for survivability in WvW?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’ve always felt that our rifle is a bit awkward. Its autoattack has a 1200 range, but its hardest hitting attack needs to be from up close. It has a jump attack and a (self)knockback attack. The net is great but do I use it to close the gap for my blunderbus or widen it for my auto? Or is it net, jumpshot, blunderbus, knockback?
I’ve recently created a rifle/SD build and have been trying to get a grip on the rifle. It seems that it’s merely a control tool in my opinion. The 1200 range autoattack (piercing) is good when my skills are on CD and I’m far away/kiting. Otherwise, it’s just a weapon to bounce around and control my target’s movement. For real damage, I use kits or SD bursts.
Am I right/wrong?
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I say base your votes on the fractal choice. The waypoint fees and key costs are only going to be lowered for 4 weeks (iirc). A fully fledged fractal is a way bigger deal in my opinion than a temporary cost reduction.
Does anybody know what kind of reduction that’s even going to be? The difference between 70% cheaper vs 20% cheaper WP fees is pretty substantial, and we just don’t know what we’d be getting. Same with key costs.
Tho I will say that if Kiel wins I’d be interested to see what kind of data Anet collects regarding people WPing. Potential for cheaper WPs to increase player movement around Tyria and lessen the burden to pop into Orr for a couple DEs and then back to Kryta for instance. Might be insightful data.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
No thanks. I don’t want to support people who teach players to not think anymore.
also: complete guides before the update comes out.
No thanks, Don’t need anymore spoiler content than there already is.
Pretty sure nobody forces you to go to her site for spoilers or to turn off your brain.
Ever think that some people could use a hand finding that last crystal or a hint for how to progress thru a JP or want to see what kind of selection of axes are out there? Not to mention a nice synopsis of each event and what they bring. You gotta admit, though they’ve been getting much better with it, sometimes Anet isn’t as clear about certain details as they could be.

Also, your achievement milestones are giving account wide +1% to things like karma gain & XP. Make sure you get all yours before you drink the jugs.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
The event is almost done …
No it’s not. It’s got a few weeks left. The next event update doesn’t release until 7/23 and as far as i know the kites will continue to drop for 2 weeks after that.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
A lot of great advice above. I will point out (if it wasn’t already mentioned since I merely skimmed) that your P/S won’t be your main source od damage. You will be bouncing between kits or sitting in grenades, and your P/S will be used situationally.
I use various builds in PvE with P/S and only use them when I need the utility of the pistol or shield or the range (if using FT) from pistol #2 & #3. #2 actually scales well with both condition or power and #3 is a good bouncing blind when needed.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Yea I have 80 SPs unspent and it seems like all I can buy with them are Legendary ingredients. If I’m going to keep attaining these naturally as I play, they should be useful for types of players.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I approve of player inspection but only for skins. If I see a player with cool armor or sweet weapon I want to be able to inspect him/her and see what it is. But I do not want to see stats. Player gear/stat inspection is a prelude to gear checks.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
That’s pretty cool. I like the group picture that GW1 initally had at launch and eventually got rid of. It’s one of those little QoL items that really has no bearing on my gaming experience, but is a potentially cool setting for epic screenshots. They should absolutely display the back item and toggles for weapons. A hide UI/display all toggle would be cool too for checking out the fruits of you combined labors, displaying the your created army.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
1- Dungeon armor, I wanted to get my warrior zerk armor by the time he gets to 80, so I did a lot of arah and cof, some TA and hotw and spent 2 transmutation crystals to make the hotw and TA armor zerk, only to realize that it’s soulbound on acquire…
2- Exploration
3- Fractal level
4- Dungeon story completion
1-The badges are account bound. So run the dungeons on whatever character you want, bank the tokens, withdraw & spend them with the character you want the armor for. The armor isn’t account bound, but you can prepare an alt with your main with dungeon runs.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Or the mystic toilet. Which is generally just as wasteful.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’ve heard that emptying your mailbox & then getting the 10+ needed for “full” is sometimes effective. I think a lot of people had issues with it bugging.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Neither Aetherblade Retreat nor Molten Facility will be one of the newest Fractals. It seems they will be one of 2 completely new Fractals. Historical is meant to refer to the event in Tyrian history, not historically played in GW2. One is the Fall of Abaddon (Evon) and the other is Thaumanova Reactor (Kiel). Check the GW2 official page for details.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Yea I’d like some new armors. Like not just gloves. Like I dunno. Instance has chance to drop pieces of full new gear set that is non-bound and completely tradeable. People would go nuts!
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Just over 3k. Been playing since Headstart. I too take it slow and have way too many alts.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
This isn’t also about wither or not flamethrower can be used for might or utility or what not. Though I may have just haphazardly mentioned them, this is mostly about the base attack power of the kit.
Anyone can use any skill with anything and get better results, I just want something reliable when I don’t feel or have the ability to kittenen juggle 20 different buttons in one battle.
That’s sort of the charm of the Engineer. We have so many tools at our disposal. And we have a very dynamic and active combat style. I main an Engineer because I have to juggle 20 different buttons. It’s way more fulfilling and engaging than sitting back and autoattacking with a warrior’s rifle.
I’m glad you can find use out of a kit despite having to basically work harder than say a gaurdian pressing 1,2,3,4. But I would really like to see it’s basic damage to be as good as my pistols, or grenades or bombs.
But I think you’re missing the point of the FT kit. We have high damage kits like grenades and bombs. What FT gives us is pressure. 200 free toughness and 5+ stacks of might just for equipping it with a single trait. Aoe damage, constant burning, pbaoe blind, knockback, and one of the lowest CD fire fields in the game. We can do all those things with a single utility slot and a single trait. The damage is good. Not as good as grenades, but it’s not supposed to be. It’s supposed to be a pressure, in your face, hearty weapon that sprays everyone around and can be coupled with our other tools for great survivability and utility. It’s a jack-of-all-trades weapon kit.
Also, comparing it to pistol autoattack for damage is not really your best argument. It’s one of our weakest autos.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I would argue that simply travelling from the boat up to the airship up top does not qualify as a jumping puzzle. It’s simply travel. With new skills. It’s not hard, it’s not confusing. It’s a single path (indicated by glowy bits on the ground to guide you). It’s actually far less complicated than 1/2 the vistas in the game.
However, I would classify collecting the crystals in the Bazaar as a sort of JP. While not a single continuous puzzle, this is more akin to many tiny JPs spread throughout the zone. A different design from the typical GW2 puzzles, but still a jumping puzzle nonetheless.
Some of the crystals are quite easy to attain. Others require some thought, planning, and perserverence. All in all though, I would say even the hardest crystal was easier to attain that the most challenging of our JPs.

There was a detailed thread with charts a couple months ago that broke down the 3 engineer healing skills, with and without traits. The bottom line was that Healing Turret (post-patch) is the best team-healing tool, while MedKit is our best self-healing tool. Now, with the most recent buff to MedKit’s trait, this makes MedKit even stronger for self-healing. Of course, this is based on being able to use each skill to its fullest potential.
Increasing the heal amount of the medkits seems a unimaginative buff for the kit, considering its quirky design. I’m actually surprised they didn’t add RNG boons for each 1-3 kit. A 2nd condition on #4 would have been very nice. #5 is already really good, so I don’t think that necessarily needs to be touched.
Since Engi heals have a team-oriented feel, I wish the aforementioned boons were added to MedKit, making it more appealing to teammates to pick up.
As an aside, I think the kits need to be just a little more obvious when on the ground. Amidst overlapping particle effects they can easily get lost. Especially when ground-targeted and thrown at your melee allies.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
Yup, asura here. Kneecapping all times.
I too am shocked at some of the censored words. I see “that-it’s” with a kitten in the middle due to i’m guessing a word that refers to a woman’s upper torso area…but there’s a space in between T & I. Also, G-to-the-IMPED is censored, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why.

Love how you attached a pic of FT doing bad damage in a lvl 65 zone with you down-leveled.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
^ correct. All kits are normalized for a static weapon damage of around 916 or something like that iirc.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
My only problem is that it’s not great against groups (when compared to my trusty FT or ’nades)
I respectfully disagree.
If you slot personal battering ram and trait into power wrench you are a crippling machine that hits like a truck. Plus you have better range with static discharge than you do with FT so you can kite.
Let me clarify: I am used to dealing aoe damage with FT and grenades, thereby dealing with groups at one time, knocking back & blinding as needed. Now however, I’m dealing single target damage. I have to learn how to deal with one foe at a time. SD/rifle offers me much greater distance and I’m learning the ins & outs of rifle and its mobility. It always seemed clumsy to me, which is why I’ve been a pistol guy since day 1.
I have traited into power wrench and find that’s a good up close n’ dirty weapon when I get a few guys on top of me, cleaving em and gearshield helps survivability.
Never liked PBR, but maybe I’ll look into it. Right now I just love goggles and their ability to give me fury & 10x vuln to my target. Great for the SD spike imo but offers little in the way of control. I’m used to always having P/S & EG so I had aoe knockbacks and EG’s cripple & its escape. New build = new mechanics = figuring it all out.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
So after months of playing ‘nades & FT with pistol, I broke down and made an SD/rifle build. Holy crap!! Wandered around with this while working on 100% map and I was crushing things. Why did I wait so long? It always seemed gimmicky to me but it’s got some great tools.
My only problem is that it’s not great against groups (when compared to my trusty FT or ‘nades) so I’m constantly jumping around and using TK’s shield. I got TK, Goggles, & Rifle Turret. I like goggles cuz it’s fury for me & 10x vuln for target to start the spike. Any other tips? Should I be attacking with TK at close range and Rifle from afar?
Gonna take this into PvP very soon.
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
+1 for Shadow skins. Radiantly glowing or blazing afire don’t really gel with a lot of the ranger & thief armors I’ve seen people rocking. Tough to hide in the shadows when your arms are glowing.
